“Growing up in Mamelodi was quite an experience. It was lovely but challenging. Where I am from is not perfect, but it played a huge role in who I am today.”
“I have been in the industry for over four years. The way I move around the decks is smooth and creative. I am not limited to House, Hip Hop, and Amapiano,” she tells Olifants News.
Having come from a creative family, Dj Mahlatse is no stranger to creativity. Her mother used to sing, and as a family unit, they love interior DIYs, art, and more. Her first gig was at shisanyama in Mamelodi. In those days, she only knew how to use a laptop, not a deck.
“It started out great for me, but I accidentally turned off the music. Eventually, I got it back on. The crowd went, “Ahh.” I think it was the nerves. Overall, it was a great gig.” she recalled.
At just 23 years old, this muso has already achieved a remarkable amount in the music world. From playing at clubs throughout Gauteng to appearing on Soweto TV twice and performing at countless bars, and events across Pretoria, Soweto, and Johannesburg, it’s clear that her artistry is highly celebrated.
“My first gig on the decks was at a big bar in Johannesburg where I just messed up in front of over 300 people because it was a competition, and I was the only lady participating out of eleven men. But a lot of people were supportive,” she said.
DJ Mahlatse is really making waves - in 2023; she’ll be spinning the decks across Gauteng, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga! If you’re trying to make your Thembisa event one that won’t soon be forgotten, this DJ’s got just what you need.
