Klipfontein mother makes world standard cakes From selling cake slices for R2.50 to delivering cakes in Sandton

N

yakallo Ratele, a 33-yearold mother of three from Klipfontein refused to wait for things to happen but decided to make them happen. She left her job to chase her dream of becoming a full-time baker. Before quitting, Nyakallo worked as a waitress and a junior manager at a coffee shop. "I quit my job because

work politics were killing my passion and I started feeling limited and not growing," she says. From a young age Nyakallo knew about her passion for the hospitality industry and studied Hotel Keeping and Catering at Seotlong Agriculture and Hotel School. She later studied Hospitality Management at Vaal University of Technology, where she

dropped out during her third year. In 2018, at age of 30, Nyakallo started baking from home where she was making just over four cakes a month with hardly any equipment except for a small oven which took long to bake. She tried to market her newly for med business by putting up posters around Klipfontein where she lives but she struggled to get orders. She then realised to gain customers she had to keep her prices low, which was alright as her craft was not as good as it is now. With improved skills and word of mouth she got the business moving forward. "So, for a cake I had charged R250 3 years ago I would charge 2 times more for it now." she told The Olifants. The now engaged Ratele still

works from home hence she limits her intake of orders to a maximum of 16 cakes per week, also depending on how creative the cakes she would be making for the week. She makes between 10 and 16 cakes per week. The cheapest cake costs R400, being just a basic standard cake. The more complex the design the more it costs. The most

expensive standard sized, single tier cake would cost between R1000 and R1500. Nyakallo's big plan is to open a walk-in store soon. “The beginning is not always easy, but hard work and honesty will get you farther than your dreams," says Nyakallo when asked about her advice for newcomers.

akmore - High unemployment in South Africa is one of the major factors leading to an increase in crime rate. The SAPS in Olifantsfontein have recently released a statement alerting residents of crimes that are happening in Oakmore. Community members are advised to stop walking alone in the late hours because they might be victims of armed robbery and rape. The SAPS says motorists are advised not to park at the old Pretoria road next to Oakmore, rather they park at the nearest garage to avid being victims of crime. According to Constable Mokete Serakwana Communication Officer Olifantsfontein SAPS Oakmore has become a crime hotspot for criminals, many crime cases have been reported that happened in that area so it is best to avoid it especially at night.“We are urging the community members to take our crime alerts into consideration to avoid being victims of crime,” said Constable Serakwana.

Paying homage to love with words by Dumisani Hlatswayo

V

alentine’s Day is around the corner, and most lovers will be exchanging gifts. But let’s face it, love is still one of those misunderstood virtues to men. Fortunately, there are few men like Vusi Qwabe who understand the true meaning of love. He reached out to The Olifants to pay a special homage to love with words. He chose to dedicate a poem and an article to a woman who captured his heart lately, Keletso. The lovebirds met on Facebook a year ago, and their love seems to be growing from strength to strenght. Here is Vusi’s poem: You know that you are in love When your heart skips a beat You know you are in love. When you want to hear her repeat I love you. You know you are in love. When you stare at her face You know you are in love. When you want to embrace The words I’m in love with you! “Keletso, my love, I love the way you make me happy and how much

Vusi Qwabe

you care. I love the way you say to me, “I love you,” and the way you’re always there,” wrote Vusi. Read Vusi’s article below: As we know, Valentine’s Day is coming on Monday 14 February 2022. We need to ask ourselves the following question: What is the true meaning of Valentine’s Day? Is it when lovers express their affection with greetings and gifts? What the bible says about Valentine’s Day on 1 John 4-7-12: “No one has

ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us” As the word of God alluded, when we love each other God abides in us. Why Valentine’s Day is important? You may ask. Well, Valentine’s Day is a day that reminds us about the importance of loving one another. Put differently; it is like an annual festival to celebrate romantic love, friendship, and admiration. All over the world, we see couples exchanging gifts, cards, flowers and spending quality time together. It is one of the few ways lovers try to honour their love for each other. But where did Valentine’s Day originate from? Or how did Valentine’s Day be organised to become what it is today? Many people credit ancient Romans for being responsible for inventing Valentine’s Day. A legend goes that Emperor Claudius executed two men named Valentine on 14 February. The Catholic church honored the men’s martyrdom, which oddly chose to celebrate Valentine’s Day on 13 February 2011. So as you can see, it doesn’t matter who started Valentine’s Day, or when you celebrate it. What matters is how you choose to express your love.

Paying the bills one sketch at a time by Dumisani Hlatswayo

L

ife is too short to work a job you hate, and no one understands this better than Kevin Chiwanza. The 24-year-old artist is making a living from sketching charcoal onto paper. Some of the art masterpieces that Kevin has created include a portrait of the first postapartheid president, Nelson Mandela, and Oliver Mtukudzi. Kevin showed his artistic flair at a younger age and used drawing as a vessel to express himself. His teachers noticed his potential and motivated him to take art seriously. He also had unwavering support from Albert Mubatsa, a friend who introduced him to charcoal and hyperrealism. Today, charcoal is Kevin’s primary tool and a way to pay for his bills. “I used to get motivation from my primary school teachers. I was often asked to draw school projects on boards. In the long run, that moulded me to an artist that I am today,” Kevin told The Olifants News. Research has proven that arts education is invaluable to the proper functioning of the child’s brain. According to the paper, Child Development and Arts Education published by the College Board, learning arts on its own helps develop a child’s brain. Kevin would hone his artistic skills by interacting with various accomplished artists, online and in person. He also learned different tactics by watching tutorials by Kelvin Okafor, a well-known hyperrealist artist who specialises in pencil portraits. Like any other career, arts has its ups and downs. The first challenge for Kevin was funding, which made it essentially difficult to procure all I ventured into doing art full-time the proper art materials. “The chal- were funding related. vory Park police arrested a 29-year suspect in connection with a robbery took place in Kempton Park. According to a statement issued by the police, the police found an unlicenced firearm and ammunition when they arrested the suspect. “The man was arrested at his rented room at Extension Two by a police team comprising of the SAPS’s K9 Unit and the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Officers, who had been following information connected to a business robbery which took place in Kempton Park on Friday,” said the statement. The police arrested at least six suspects who were allegedly also involved in the robbery. Besides confiscating the firearm, the police also impounded a company car. The suspect keeps mum

as to the vehicle’s origin, but this detail will subsequently form part of police investigations into the robbery. “His case has been handed over to the Ekurhuleni North’s Trio Task Team detectives who are responsible for all serious cases within the district. The suspects is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court, after which, it is expected, that he will join others with whom he is alleged to be in cahoots with,” the statement revealed. “We thank the officers involved for coming into our area and ridding us of an illegal firearm and an alleged criminal. Hopefully, others like him are taking notes, the important of which is that Ivory Park is not a hideout for criminals,” said Colonel Mpotoane.

Winnie Mandela entrepreneur brings detergent products closer to the community by Dumisani Hlatswayo

T

hembisa has a viable and more sophisticated detergent market. Still, there are few brands that an ordinary consumer from Thembisa can identify with. Kopano Mamafa spotted this gap in the market and decided to do something about it. Before starting his own manufacturing company, the Winnie Mandela entrepreneur amassed experience by working for a merchandising company where, among other things, he was responsible for promoting prominent detergent brands. It was only in 2021 when Kopano founded his manufacturing business and called it Melanin Chems. “We would always negotiate for space on the shelves, promote their brands and ensure that there is enough stock in the stores of those areas. I realised that I am good in that field and that I could build a brand that can compete with the best,” Kopano told The Olifants News. Kopano’s company, Melanin Chems, supplies an assortment of detergent products, from thick bleach to dishwashers, sanitisers, and pine gel. His company has identified local restaurants, pubs, daycare centres, and schools as their primary target market. Melanic Chem currently supplies more than ten establishments in Thembisa and surrounding areas. “Our community needs one more

company that will emerge within itself. A brand that will employ locals, a brand dedicated to advancing the youth through skills development and charity work,” he explained. Kopano said one of the biggest challenges they had to face as a company was managing their finances, including pricing and cash flow management. “I believe that before we could discuss funding in a black community, we should educate our entrepreneurs about financial management. And empower them with knowledge of how to price reasonably and teach them how to identify affordable suppliers. It really helped that I knew all these things early on,” Kopano said. Kopano’s company has recently managed to secure a space that they can use to manufacture detergent products. However, they are still hoping to secure a small warehouse for their manufacturing and a small factory shop. “Our demand hasn’t reached a point where we need heavy machinery yet. We still buy our chemicals from one of the resellers in Kempton Park who package and sell them in small quantities for emerging manufacturers,” said Kopano. In September 2021, Melanin Chems launched its first flagship

42-year-old man from Kaalfontein was shot during a robbery. He would later succumb to his injuries in hospital. According to the statement issued by the police, the incident took place during the festive season. “This happened in the early hours of the morning during a robbery in which three cellular phones were taken by two criminals, one of whom was armed with a firearm,” said the statement. Immediately after two shots were fired, the family and the adjacent community noticed that the suspects had run out of ammunition, tables were turned on the criminal. One alleged robber was beaten to death by a mob. “We would have liked to have the deceased alive; maybe his incarceration may have ended up with solving similar crimes committed in the area and the immediate surroundings,” said Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, the station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS. Brigadier Ngcobo also appealed to the community to report crimes and criminal activities and to thoroughly know who their tenants are and their sources of income to enable us to live peacefully in our homes. “Let’s not tolerate or idolize criminals,” said Brigadier Ngcobo.
