Ekurhuleni dismisses 40 waste collection workers by Staff Writer
T
he City of Ekurhuleni has dismissed 40 waste collection workers for being engaged in gross misconduct. The dismissed employees were rendering waste collection services, mainly in Kempton Park. Their dismissal followed violent incidents over the weekend where at least one refuse removal truck of a contractor was torched in Bredell on Saturday. Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, said in a statement issued on Monday afternoon that the workers went on rampage on Saturday, harassing, assaulting and intimidating a crew that was doing round collections. Ekurhuleni Legislature Takes Committees to Communities by Staff Writer
Community march seeks to address issues at Tembisa Hospital
K
eletso Hollo is a community leader in the Winnie Mandela section. On the 7 February 2020 she was part of the community march aiming to address the poor conditions at Tembisa hospital. “Our march was very peaceful. There were no reported cases of theft,” Hollo told The Olifants. She says the memorandum was accepted by the Head Of Intergovernmental Affairs, Mr Thokozani Langa. Grievances on the memorandum include: the immediate resignation of the CEO of the hospital, the immediate resignation of the Nursing Manager accused of sexual harassment, the reinstatement of nurses that were transferred to other
hospitals without their knowledge. Furthermore, they want the government to open the Kempton Park hospital to the community of Winnie Mandela. “When you are a community leader people come and ask for your assistance especially when management is not doing anything about issues,” says Hollo. She says people are frustrated while others are even depressed by the situation at Tembisa Hospital. A Nursing Manager is accused by staff nurses of sexually harassing them. “When the nurses report those cases to their management nothing is done,” says Hollo. “Instead the nursing manager is threatening the nurses. Some of those nurses
were transferred to other hospitals without their knowledge.” All the reported cases happened last year just before the festive holidays. She says they couldn’t march then because most people were travelling home for the holidays. The other issue is that of poor infrastructure at the hospital. “For instance, some of the windows cannot close while others are covered with plastics. There is also a shortage of beds. There was a patient who delivered on the floor. And the other woman delivered on her own, she didn’t get any medical assistance afterwards. The baby was severely affected by this and milestones such as walking were delayed,” says Hollo.
The past few years have seen the role of scrutiny garnering interest from civil society, lobby groups and sector stakeholders. Its momentum is fueled by a need for active accountability in government, where members of the public are calling out for a more participative role in governance. The adoption of the Separation of Power Governance model by the Ekurhuleni council brought the notion of inclusive democracy to life. It is through this resolution that a collaboration between the Community Participation & Education and Research & Committees unit ensued. The past week saw Oversight Committees embarking on cluster committee visits that ended with public engagements. These engagements not only encouraged communities to air their views about

their service delivery challenges but also provided much needed opportunity to drive awareness about the function of oversight & scrutiny where it fits in within the local governance framework. Tembisa officially becomes Thembisa The City of Ekurhuleni’s spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, said the municipality has finally fixed the grammatical error that happened many years ago. According to sourced information, the name Thembisa, which is a Nguni word that means “promise” and “hope”, was misspelled as Tembisa many years ago. “The City of Ekurhuleni will change some names of its townships. This is more of a correction of spelling. Tembisa will now be pronounced and written with the letter ‘h’ and be spelled as Thembisa,” confirmed Gadebe. He said these name changes come to effect with immediate effect. “As we speak, Tembisa is no longer that but Thembisa,” he announced. Other townships within the jurisdiction of this metropolitan include Tokoza which will also inherit the letter ‘h’ and will now be spelled as Thokoza, while Tsakane will now be spelled as Tsakani with the letter ‘i’ instead of the letter ‘e’.

Tseli said: “The woman who owns Busy Corner Imbizo is confronted by a lot of people who believe she owns the mall. The community was not included in the process of employing them, some were even brought through back door practices. You find that they are employed at the mall but no one knows them.”

Kaizer Chiefs fans run amok after Nedbank Cup loss New soccer T academy at Olifantsfontein Primary
he act displayed by the Kaizer Chiefs fans is unacceptable violence erupted in Moses Mabhida stadium on Saturday evening 21 April when Chiefs lost 2-0 to Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup semi-final at Moses Mabhida, Durban. Kaizer Cheifs fans invaded the pitch and started assaulting security guards the attacks were captured on cellphones and uploaded on social media. The crowd invasion comes in the same week when the PSL fined Chiefs R250 000, of which R200 000 was suspended for 24 months, after fans pelted the players with objects at FNB Stadium after the 3-0 defeat to Chippa United on April 7. The injured security was repeatedly punched and kicked. After they fell to the ground‚ a From left to right: Letladi Madubanya(Former Baroka FC captain), Tebogo Kgatle (Teacher & soccer coordinator), man dressed in khaki trousers hit the secuMr Nhamo Kwami (Teacher & soccer coach), Mr Lesibana Molepo (Principal) and Lebo Letsoalo. rity guard with a part of the speaker system. The Security guard is fighting for her life in hospital. esibana Molepo is a principal at Olifantsfontein Primary. His school has realised the need for a soccer academy in Olifantsfontein. As a result, Mr. Molepo decided to introduce an under 11 soccer academy that will guide and develop all learners to succeed in a competitive, professional context. The Olifants spoke to Mr. Molepo about this: “The purpose of the soccer academy is to identify talent and nurture it. In addition, support children until they reach professional level.” Molepo said. He says the academy will identify
“As soon as we see that they are a little bit established we will send them to professional soccer teams such as Orlando Pirates, Mamilodi Sundowns or Kaizer Chiefs,” says Molepo. As far as gender is concerned, Mr Molepo says they decided to start with the boy's team but as soon as the academy grows, they will add the girl's team as well. “We don't want to be gender specific,” Molepo adds. Mr Molepo calls for parents to support their children. “Remember we are a school and the school knocks off at 2:00 pm. The training
dren. We will also have tournaments on Saturdays. Parents must come and watch their children.” Interestingly, learners will be coached by someone who knows how to get results. Letladi Madubanya, former Baroka player is getting the learners into shape, physically and mentally. Madubanya says he decided to offer his services to the school after realising that children from Olifantsfontein struggle to get into soccer academies. “I am just getting these kids into a healthy mind set to get the feel of the ball. We also try to do the after school care for them.”
The violence did not end on the field outside the stadium cars were damaged. This incident raises eyebrows about the effectiveness of the security in high profile matches. More than a year ago similar incident happened at Loftus when Sundowns hammered Pirates 6-0 and no one was punished. Two people have been arrested in connection to Saturday’s unrest, Two suspects aged 27 and 33 were arrested for public violence and malicious damage to property‚" said Captain Nqobile Gwala on Sunday. The pair would appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Furthermore Steve Komphela resigned as the Amakhosi coach with immediate effect after the match. According to the @OfficialPSL Twitter feed, Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung said at the press conference: “We have had to do a lot of reality checks. Players are not safe. People are not safe. The coach is not safe. The coach is stepping down with immediate effect.”
