Thembisa designers gets an opportunity to showcase
K
asi Co-Lab is a township designer’s emporium at The Mall of Thembisa that has given local entrepreneurs a leg up. At least 11 Thembisa based local artists and a DJ have been given the opportunity to showcase their work at the hub, without paying a cent. The concept started at Busy Corner Imbizo Shisanyama in Ebony Park by hosting a series of exhibitions - leading up to the opening of the mall. According to Gayl Crow, Head Of Communications at McCormick Property Development, this a totally radical change towards achieving the government’s goal of transforming the township economy. “The Kasi Co-Lab was an idea from the McCormick brothers. The company has been going close to 40 years. They wanted to find something they could implement but never had the right for it. So Thembisa and all the amazing entrepreneurs here were a perfect fit for it,” Gayl explains. Gayl says
the thinking behind the Kasi-Co Lab was inspired by the Shark Tank, a TV programme helping aspiring entrepreneurs achieve their dreams. Their goal was to stimulate the township economy. “We are passionate about getting the local guys involved. Also, mentoring them and helping them grow,” she says. McCormick Property wanted to make sure that the look and feel of the Thembisa Mall are authentic by giving local artists a showcase of their work. “We wanted to give designers a blank canvass. We said we wanted to resonate with the local community and offer local people something they can connect with,” she says. Gayl says McCormick Property
has been working closely with Imbizo Shisanyama founder, Ma Zwane, to select the right candidates for this project. “We hosted two rounds of interviews in the store then we selected them based on readiness for market and stock availability,” she says.

AA cautions motorists to be safe on the road by Staff Writer
– including trailers and caravans – must be roadworthy and thoroughly checked before embarking on a long journey including spare wheels, nuts, bolts and axles. It says these vehicles should be in good enough condition for a round trip to your destination and back home again. While the checklist on the website offers a complete breakdown of everything that should be checked before, during and after a holiday, the AA offers the following as quick reference: • Get Roadside and Medical assist from the AA (and keep all your particulars with you which are available on the AA app) • Buckle up. This includes all passengers, including toddlers under three who, legally, must be in a child restraint, and children 1.3m or shorter who also need to be in booster seats. • Obey all the rules of the road, and drive to the conditions. If the road is marked 120km but visibility is poor, decrease your speed to ensure clear vision of the road ahead. • Focus on the road and on other drivers. Distracted driving diminishes reaction time.

Ivory Park man gets eight years for murder by Dumisani Hlatswayo
I
VORY Park SAPS acting station commander Colonel Thembakazi Ndlovu has welcomed the conviction and subsequent eight-year prison sentence for an Ivory Park man for murder. The Tembisa Magistrate’s Court has this week sentenced Lebogang Nkosinathi Motloung, 37, for the murder Bafana Phala, 36, in April last year during an alcohol-fuelled altercation at Ivory Park Extension Eight. The two have had an argument as Motloung wanted to forcefully take a liquor bottle from the deceased. They are familiar with each other and were seen sitting together prior to the fatal
argument that followed. Owing to the disagreement the two argued, during which Motloung was seen taking out what looked like a sharp object from his pocket and stabbed the deceased once on the neck. Phala was certified dead upon his arrival in the hospital. Motloung was granted bail in the initial stages of the trial but was on Tuesday sentenced to eight years of effective imprisonment. “We hope the family of the deceased will get some form of comfort from this conviction. We also congratulate Detective Sergeant Moss Moukangwe, the lead investigator of this case, for the job well done,” said Colonel Ndlovu.

Meet another outstanding netball player
I
t’s a shame that, in 2020, netball is still stereotypically known as being a ‘girl’s sport’. This is despite the fact that netball suffers from a lack of exposure in the South African media. Over and above that, there are few brands willing to sponsor netball players. Most boys in Thembisa grow up playing football, and netball puts them off. Very few boys in Thembisa aspire to be successful netball players like Thamsanqa Ndlovu does. He is a goal defence and goalattack, and he lives, breathes, and eats netball. Thamsanqa was also nominated to represent Ekurhuleni in 2021. “ I felt excited when they nominated me my home situation because I’m my mothbecause this is a once-off opportunity,” he er’s only hope,” he continues. says.“It means a lot to me because others Thamsanqa’s future aspirations include didn’t get that opportunity to showcase becoming the male South African netball their talent. I’m motivated and driven by player and aspire other young males around my home situation. I really love to change South Africa to play netball.
