Meet the founder of a thriving shoe cleaning company by Dumisani Hlatswayo

L

ucas Molepo is one of the young entrepreneurs who has spotted a gap in the market and decided to do something about it. After noting that there was no company offering a sneaker cleaning service in Tembisa, he decided to found Clean Steps, a company specialising in cleaning, refurbishing, and maintaining shoes. As a Bcom Accounting graduate, he had all the right financial skills in running a startup. “I moved to Tembisa from Polokwane after graduating to seek job opportunities. It was tough for me to find a job, and it became even harder to survive in a foreign land. Being a problem-solver by nature, I started to identify problems around me that I could try to solve and make money while doing so. Among other ideas was helping people take care of their footwear. The idea was inspired by my dirty suede boots, which got dirty in the rain on

my way from Oakmoor Taxi Rank when I first arrived in Tembisa. The material was very sophisticated, and from that point, I just knew that my ability to take care of various kinds of shoes and material could help people around the township and neighbouring cities with their precious shoes,” said Molepo. “Besides the novelty of the concept of a shoe and sneaker cleaning business, is our services being ondemand. We offer prompt pickup and delivery to our customer’s doorstep wherever and whenever they need our services. We also offer house calls where we service our customers’ footwear in their homes for their convenience. All this uniqueness is available at very affordable prices.” There are a lot of challenges that face young people running their small businesses. One of Molepo’s biggest challenges alongside branding and marketing the company did not have a workspace. “I started washing shoes from my aunt’s

backyard, whom I was living with at the time, and that sometimes came across as unprofessional to my first customers. Then among other challenges we are facing today is not having a stable and permanent workshop as we are currently working under a gazebo which is inconvenient for our operations during bad weather,” he said. Clean Step’s target market is mainly people who live busy lives and don’t have time: young profesLucas Molepo sionals, university students, sports and fitness enthusiasts, and young married couples with kids. those who don’t have a clear written “A business guided by a clear busi- plan and direction,” advises Molepo. ness plan is a business with direc“An interesting fact that I’d like for tion and clear set goals ensuring people to know about using a shoe progress and smooth operations laundry is that a pair of shoes that is where other businesses are strug- well taken care of lasts longer than gling. Community leader fights over right to daughter’s corpse by Dumisani Hlatswayo

C

layville community leader David Mabitsela is mourning following the unexpected passing of his 9-year-old daughter. According to Mabitsela, his daughter passed away due to heart complications. Like any other grieving parent, Mabitsela had to travel home to make funeral arrangements. However, a tug war between him and his erstwhile wife began as the parents fought about where the remains should be buried. Mabitsela said he came to fetch the remains of his daughter Monday, but his wife’s family prevented him from doing so. He said he met his former wife and her family to try to plead with them,

Murderer hands himself to the Ivory Park police by Dumisani Hlatswayo

A but they refused him access to the body. According to him, as he has paid lobola,

he has a right to bury the remains of his daughter in Bulobedu with the rest of Mabitsela’s clan. “I’m told that my daughter will be buried over here. They have even erected a tent outside, I could see people milling around,” said the distraught father. “They were trying to destabilise me because I’ve been waiting for them to respond to my request. Today I had to drive to court, which is 40 kilometres away to get a court interdict,” he added. Mabitsela said he wanted the court to stop his ex wife to bury their daughter in Shongoane or any other place other than Bolobedu, Limpopo. The father said this was his daughter’s ancestral home.

Thembisa man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting incident in Ivory Park on the first of this month has finally handed himself to the police. He was accompanied by his legal representative. He must have been aware that sooner or later the detectives from Ivory Park SAPS will finally locate him and bring him to account for his alleged involvement in the murder. The suspect is alleged to have shot and killed a 44-year-old man from Extension 12, Ivory Park, on the morning of 1 March 2021. It is alleged that the suspect and the deceased were involved in a love triangle with the same lady. Both the suspect and the deceased are familiar with each other, and it is said that on the morning in question the suspect came to the deceased’s place, called out his name and, when the deceased came out, there was a brief scuffle and the two started to fight for the gun allegedly in possession of the suspect. The deceased was shot once on the abdomen and succumbed to his injuries a while later in hospital.

Very soon after attending to the scene the police managed to gather all the evidence, followed the leads, which took them to the suspect’s place in Tembisa. The detectives assigned to the case believe they were on the verge of arresting him anyway, but welcome the fact that the suspect has handed himself over, albeit three weeks after the incident. The Station Commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, said his officers have done a good job of exerting the necessary pressure on the suspect to a point that the suspect thought the best thing to do under the circumstances will be to hand himself over. “The fact that he handed himself accompanied by his legal representative does not change the fact that we have a watertight case against him. Based on what I have been briefed on, I am confident that this man has a case to answer,” said Ngcobo. The man is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday or soon thereafter to face a charge of murder.

Acting is her true passion by Dumisani Hlatswayo

H

ave you ever wondered what it takes to become a TV actor or actress in South Africa? According to Kwandisiwe Nondlazi Nkosi, being an actor requires dedication, patience, and a love for the craft. Nondlazi Nkosi works as an actress, prankster, and makeup artist. “In 2013, I started as a background artist, but I always wanted to push for television. I then did theatre to gain more experience in acting. I started attending auditions in 2014 and pushed till I got my first TV gig,” she explained. Nondlazi Nkosi looks up to Masasa Mbangeni, Warren

Masemola, Sindi Dlwathi, Patience Ozokwor, and Tyler Perry. She has appeared on Isibaya, Lithapo, The docket, Bheka Mina Ngedwa season 1, and Bheka Sikubambile season 2. She said some of the challenges she has to face is that people expect her to drive a fancy car and live in the burbs, not ekasi. “I’m still an upcoming actress. I’m not there yet, but I’m getting there even though I don’t have much support as an upcoming artist. Having to maintain a social media presence to push to be known,” Nondlazi Nkosi said. She agreed that acting is a tough industry, and one needs the brave to navigate all its challenges. “Just be disciplined and know what you want,” Nondlazi Nkosi advised.

all of Thembisa, in partnership with RunMidrand, hosted the first Family Fun Day on the 28th of March 2021 at Mall of Thembisa. The event aimed to entertain shoppers and allow Kasi Co-Lab artists to showcase their work. Kasi Co-Lab is a township designer’s emporium at The Mall of Thembisa that has given local entrepreneurs a leg up. Thembisa based local artists had an opportunity to exhibit their work at the hub without paying a cent. The Kasi Co-Lab concept started at Busy Corner Imbizo Shisanyama in Ebony Park by hosting a series of exhibitions - leading up to the opening of the mall. Matt Mccormick, head of marketing at Mccormick Property Development, a company that owns Mall Of Thembisa, said: “With Covid-19, people have isolated a little bit. We wanted to create a space that is not overcrowded and create awareness for local businesses,” Mccormick revealed.
