akmore - High unemployment in South Africa is one of the major factors leading to an increase in crime rate. The SAPS in Olifantsfontein have recently released a statement alerting residents of crimes that are happening in Oakmore. Community members are advised to stop walking alone in the late hours because they might be victims of armed robbery and rape. The SAPS says motorists are advised not to park at the old Pretoria road next to Oakmore, rather they park at the nearest garage to avid being victims of crime. According to Constable Mokete Serakwana Communication Officer Olifantsfontein SAPS Oakmore has become a crime hotspot for criminals, many crime cases have been reported that happened in that area so it is best to avoid it especially at night.“We are urging the community members to take our crime alerts into consideration to avoid being victims of crime,” said Constable Serakwana.

Cradle DayCare Centre receives another nod from the government By Dumisani Hlatswayo
C
radle DayCare Centre is now registered with the Department Of Social Development. This good news was shared by Cradle DayCare Centre founder, Anneke Van Heerden. According to Heerden, every ECD facility must be registered with the provincial government and comply with the guidelines for Early Childhood Development Centres. “Apart from registering as an ECD, we had to register as an NPO as well. There was a procedure that we had to follow to be fully registered,” she revealed. As a parent, you will have peace of mind knowing that your child will be in safe hands at Cradle Day Care. Van Heerden added: “We also received our Covid-19 compliance certificate in April, confirming that we are one of the safest day centres in Ekurhuleni.” A few months ago, the City of Ekurhuleni hosted a readiness campaign aptly titled “Early Childhood Development” at Cradle DayCare Centre. The event was led by the City officials in about 100 ECD centres, coming from different parts of the region. The campaign aimed to help ECD centres meet government Covid-19 regulations. Van Heerden said her daycare centre also received high fibre cereal from Tiger Brands. She expressed her gratitude to the brand for their generosity. “We just wanted to say to Tiger Brand, thank you for considering us. We are actually in quite a need of funds at this moment,” she said.

iss Ivor y Pa rk Refined recently visited the community of Thembakhoza Informal Settlement to do a charitable event in celebration of Mother’s Day this May. The local pageant is no stranger to this community as they had previously visited to donate stationary equipment after running a back to school campaign earlier this year. Yet again the pageant along with its founders (Genolia Madonsela and Valencia Mathabela) and this year’s finalists did what they do best and that is to touch the communities they serve. Mathabela said the hand over was successful and it is all thanks to those who managed to reach out and donate. “We ran an online drive were people had to donate their unused or old hand bags which were still in good condition for someone else’s to use,” said Mathabela. The pageant will be looking forward to having more charitable events in the communities they serve, to eradicate poverty. Speaking to one of the pageants finalists Martha Tshabalala said there could be more good done only if people unite under one common course of action and that was evident in this campaign. “The people of the area welcomed us with warm hands

itikeni Secondary school is one of the few township schools that now has a computer lab. This follows an opening of the lab that was attended by learners, teachers, officials from the Department Of Basic Education, and the sponsor GNB. The event took place on the 7th of May, and it was documented on social media. In comparison to private schools, most township learners still don't have access to computers; even though coding has now become a prescribed subject in schools. “The lab will introduce fast world-class internet. All computers are Nine Gen I 3, which means learners will enjoy state-of-the-art learning. The facility is built with security in mind so CCTV cameras have been installed,” revealed Thato Sefaro, who was one of the organisers of the launch.

According to World Wide Worx, internet penetration in South Africa was 40% in 2017, with the rollout of fibre this rate has now increased to 60%. It was also found that older teachers in township schools still had basic mobile phones which were limited to audio calling and SMS functionality. According to TEEC founder, Rapelang Motsumi, opening a lab will allow learners to gain practical experience in IT. He said: “It is sad that due to the limited access to technology, some learners have to suffer and lag behind their peers from private schools.” Not having qualified teachers is the second challenge faced by many township schools. Rapeleng said Zitikeni Secondary has a qualified IT teacher who will be helping learners at the school. Learners will access free internet and use computers during school hours to research and broaden their knowledge.

Winnie Mandela lad launches a clothing brand By Dumisani Hlatswayo
H
ave you ever had an idea to start a clothing brand but kept on postponing because you thought you don’t have what it takes? That what Nkwane Martin Makola had done. He is a young man from Mohlaletse (Gasekhukhune) who has been postponing launching his clothing line for years. There’s a saying that goes, “if you consume too much of something, then why not own it? It motivated Martin to work towards making his dream a reality. His love for fashion has since inspired him to start his local clothing brand, Revamp Stitch. But before that, Martin had to find out if there was a need for his product in the market. So he conducted thorough research that lasted 13 months. “I started the business in Winnie Mandela Zone 10. I had faith in my dream, and I wanted to create something that would tell our own stories. Something we can relate to as blacks and that is close to our hearts. I realised that regardless of which township you come from, you can relate to our brand “Revamp Stitch” and that is how the brand was born,’ he says. Some of the challenges that Martin had to face include financing his business. So he had to start small by investing a part of his salaries. Revamp Stitch brand was introduced in February 2021, the clothing brand has grown beyond his expectations. “My objective is to provide quality clothing to the public. I gave my customers a brand that the public loves and doesn’t mind spending money on. It is incredible to see my dream as the Revamp Stitch founder a big market,” he said. and passion turn into a reality. n Ivory Park man who three years ago stabbed another one, almost killing him, has been sentenced to nine years in prison by the Tembisa Magistrate Court. Luvoyo Mlisa, 25, was on Friday, 14 May 2021, given nine years behind bars for nearly killing Arthur Mahlong, 26, after the former accused him of spilling his liquor. The suspect was arrested shortly before Christmas day in 2018. The station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, has welcomed the sentencing, adding: “The levels of violence in the area are so much serious, so much so that people such as Luvoyo Mlisa and others like him, deserve these sentences in order to send out a clear message to others out there.” Brigadier Ngcobo has thanked Detective Sergeant Leshabe Moukangwe for the amount of work he put into this case, thus ending in this conviction.

Five tips to help you save on current expenses 3
Entertainment Look for activities you can do at home or for free as a family, reducing spending on transport and entrance fees. Watch your spending on birthdays, gifts and celebrations and find less costly ways to give gifts and to celebrate special moments.
by Staff Writer
T
he current economic environment coupled with further challenges of income instability, petrol and electricity price increases requires consumers to have a good handle on how to manage their expenses effectively, focus on their essentials and curb unnecessary spending. Dhashni Naidoo, FNB Consumer Education Programme Manager says, “In a household budget, expenses can be categorised into needs and wants. Needs are essential things in our lives such as food, housing and medical costs. Wants are luxuries and things that we can possibly do without such as entertainment, luxury clothes, eating out. Expenses can be further categorised into fixed, variable or changing expenses. Fixed expenses are the costs that you can plan for because they don’t change from month to month such as rent, insurance or funeral covers. Variable expenses on the other hand, are expenses that keep changing based on usage. For example, electricity, groceries, airtime or data costs.” Naidoo shares 5 tips to help you save on current expenses:
1
Utilities Switch off appliances, such as computers once fully charged, and lights that are not in use. Switch off your geyser during the day or at night (off-peak) or invest

Food Cook at home as much as possible, cut down on take-aways, when going to work or school, prepare your lunch at home. This will mean you spend less on take-aways and convenience food bought at petrol stations or at work. Reduce the number of times you host braais and parties to save on food. Encourage friends to bring and share when hosting.

ere are some Tips and Tricks to help you make the right choices right from the start! Use a qualified Estate Agent from a professional Agency … you can try and sell it yourself and you might succeed but remember a good Agent sells property for a living and he will have Buyers waiting to view your property as well as the resources and skills to lead you through the minefield of Property Sales. This will make paying his Commission worthwhile as he should be able to get you more for your House than you would have got if you tried to sell it yourself. TIP: Check if the Agent and his Agency are LEGAL and have Fidelity Fund Certificates by looking on the Estate Agency Affairs Board website for free. If they are not then do not deal with them. The website is www.eaab.org.za TIP: Ask the Agent for a list of other similar Properties in your area that are on the market and those that have Sold. From this, he will be able to explain how he came to his Valuation. TIP: Ask the Agent for
his ‘Marketing Plan’ and what he intends to do to sell your Property. TIP: Ask the Agent if he is going to use a professional photographer to take photos of your House. The majority of property marketing is done online and fantastic photos are a necessity. TIP: NEVER pay any money upfront or at any time to the Agent. All his Marketing and Advertising are for his account, not yours… that’s why you pay Commission. TIP: Ask the Agent for weekly updates detailing the advert responses he received. Also ask to know why those Clients that viewed your House did not put in an Offer. You need to know their Objections. TIP: When making an appointment to bring potential Buyers the Agent must give you enough notice and not just arrive with the potential Buyers. All good Agents will follow these ules anyway and you won’t need to suggest them. But it is always good for you to know… Please let me know if you have any Property related Questions and I will gladly assist. Send an email to williamd@remax.net.
