COJ leaves local entrepreneurs in limbo by Dumisani Hlatswayo

t was around 2014 when Ivory Park entrepreneurs submitted an application to the City Of Johannesburg to rent a business site. While their application was approved the same year, lease agreements were only issued two years later. In 2016, at least 64 local entrepreneurs received a 30-year lease. With some believing that their dream of growing local businesses would come true. However, seven years later, the site still has no water, electricity, or sanitation. The former mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Parks Tau, officiated the handing over of the lease to local entrepreneurs. During the opening ceremony, Tau entrepreneurs lost hope. Did you know?

Let’s talk about autism

Autism was not discovered until 1943 by Leo Kanner, a child psychiatrist at Johns Hopkins. Today it is considered a multi-factorial disorder with genetic and nongenetic risk factors. We may never know what the prevalence of autism was a half century ago, but data from the last few decades point to a considerable increase in the true prevalence. Some of the things you need to know about autism include: • Autism is not an illness Having an autistic disorder doesn’t mean you’re ill. It only means your brain works differently from other people. • Autism is not a medical condition There is no cure for autism. All adults or children living with autism need support and love. • Autism is not the same for everyone Some people living with autism can live independent lives. While others need care and support every day. Some autistic people have average or above average intelligence. • Nobody knows what causes autism It has nothing to do with witchcraft, a curse, or a parent’s bad behaviour. • Autism has nothing to do with vaccine There are many people claiming that vaccines cause autism, but scientists are refuting those claims.

Thembisa’s christian hip hop artist drops a single by Dumisani Hlatswayo

T

hembisa’s Christian hip hop artist, Katleho Mashego, has done it again. The 27-year-old muso dropped a hot single, Lenyora, on the 8th of October. Katleho’s music career started around 2019 when he released his first-ever 5-song EP titled “Unashamed.” The project was well-received and received over 4 000 page likes on Facebook. He has since released more songs and was nominated as the Best Newcomer for the 012 City Awards. Katleho said: “I have always been a giver at heart, and I wanted to restore hope to those who have lost it through my music.” “People are having a hard time living, and teenagers are getting into substance abuse and irresponsible behaviour at an early age. Many don’t have jobs; some are fatherless,” he told The Olifants News. With Lenyora, Katlego proves that it is possible to motivate young people through music. He said the inspiration behind the song derives

from seeing young people grappling with issues like low self-esteem, lack of confidence, and disillusionment in government and the justice system. “I want to instill in their minds that we are all born kings and queens in our own right,” said Katleho. On Lenyora, Katleho worked with his producer Shy Beast and his engineer Shakespear Nkosi from 7th Wave Entertainment. “I also brought in my little sister, Kutloano, in the

Ramaphosa launches a Women Economic Assembly to empower women by Dumisani Hlatswayo

P

resident Cyril Ramaphosa has launched the Women E conom ic Assembly that seeks to empower women. According to the government, the assembly will put significant sectors under the spotlight to evaluate the level of participation of women-owned businesses. The Assembly will be launched during a hybrid event attended by businesswomen, government leaders and officials, private companies, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders. The private sector, civil society, women’s organisations,

businesswomen, and government have partnered to form the WECONA – an initiative to facilitate the participation of womenowned businesses in core areas of the economy. This initiative emphasises the participation of women-owned enterprises in the entire value chain to foster sustainable economic development. Women Economic Assembly national convener and co-chairperson, Futhi Mtoba, said the Assembly will activate, coordinate and monitor government and private sector actions. “The initiative seeks to connect and inspire innovation, thought

leadership, and action to transform value chain eco-systems. As well as to obtain a deep, common understanding and detailed articulation of sector specific valuechain eco-systems.” “This will enable businesswomen to identify entry points and opportunities for sustainable economic participation,” Mtoba said. The Assembly aligns with the outcomes of Pillar 5 of the National Strategic Plan on GenderBased Violence and Femicide. Pillar 5 calls for “the need to create more economic opportunities for women who are vulnerable to abuse due to poverty, unemployment and social inequality.

Ekurhuleni hits the million Covid-19 vaccination mark

T

he City of Ekurhuleni has reached a milestone of administering over a million COVID-19 vaccines to its residents. This milestone was achieved during the Vooma Vaccination Weekend drive launched by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday, 1 October at DH Williams Hall in Katlehong. The Vooma Vaccination weekend drive is a government programme aimed at accelerating the speed at which vaccines are administered to as many people in South Africa as possible before the start of the anticipated 4th wave of COVID-19. “In only three days between 1 - 3 October, our health team administered 20 754 vaccines

bringing the total number of vaccines administered to 1, 013 714 as of Tuesday, 5 October. We are happy to see that residents heeded the presidents call to get vaccinated during the Vooma Vaccination Weekend drive. While the 1 million mark is a great achievement, efforts are in place to get more people vaccinated to achieve herd immunity,” said MMC for Health and Social Services Cllr Nomadozi Nkosi. The MMC further reminded residents to get their second dose to be fully vaccinated. “Residents need not return to the same vaccination site but can visit a site convenient to them as they are already on the database,” she said.
