Mphahlele named new Mile champion

South Africa’s top middle-distance runners converged in Thembisa, Makhulong on October 31 to battle for top honours of the Spar Thembisa Mile. Nkosinathi Sibiya, who won the race in 2019 edition claimed the second position and won a silver medal and Tshepo Tshite won a bronze medal as came third in the race.

Prudence Sekgodiso representing the Tshwane University of Technology defended her crown as she won the women’s race the third time in a row.

She said she will be aiming to get better in training to be able to break her record of 4:44 in the next edition of SPAR Thembisa Mile. “I prepared for this year’s race, I definitely need to prepare more if I want to break the record,” said Sekgodiso.

Ryan Mphahlele, aka the Moneymaker was happy to have broken his record and reclaimed his 2018 first position.

“He said he has recently competed in a national cross country competition that was his highlight of the year,” “It feels good to have won the Thembisa Mile race,” he said.

The organisers of the race will be looking to host their 20th edition next year and make it a success.
