Tembisa Theatre Week 2020 is here by Staff Writer
T
X Theatre Productions from Tembisa has been hosting the Tembisa Theatre Week for the past three years. The Olifants caught up with the founder, Mxolisi Masilela to find out more about the theatre week. The Olifants found Masilela busy with final preparations for the 2020 edition which starts on Monday 27, February. With him was Solly Malaka the Managing Director of Places and Faces who is also the writer of one of the Tembisa Theater Week 2020 plays, Tourist to Mzansi. “We celebrate theatre in Tembisa through new plays. How we do it is that there is an open application process that closes in December every year. We do an open call for entries on our Facebook page and community newspapers. Then we select productions that are going to participate. This year we will have 16 plays, all of which are new plays by young writers,” reveals Masilela.
Solly Malaka and Thabang Ramabu
One of the plays, Tour to Mzansi was rehearsing and the Olifants team was invited to see the rehearsal which was a display of great talent in its own right. Masilela started acting when he was only 9 years old back in 1999. He went on to study performing arts at Windybrow Theatre, upon graduating he decided to come back to give back to his community. He recalls: “The first thing I realised was that all theatres are always in the cities. So we thought maybe we should create theatre spaces that caters for actors in Tembisa. We found this centre and raised some funds and bought equipment because we knew that waiting for government takes forever. So we said we would do it ourselves and that's what we are doing.” Masilela says they expect to have at least 80 to 120 people everyday, from Monday the 27th to Sunday 2nd. He says, he expects at least 200 people on weekends because weekends normally get busy.
Cover charge differs from show to show, ranges between R30 and R60. Those who want to buy all the shows will get a discount. People can book online directly with TX Theatre production by visiting www.txtheatreproductions.co.za or by emailing info@txtheatreproductions.co.za. “Unfortunately, we currently don't have a sponsor. We are financing the theatre week from our own pockets. Normally, close friends assist us with things such as paint. So, if there is anyone who can donate something they are welcome to contact us via email or WhatsApp 071541 2823.” The other plays include The Escape Artist & The Conspiracy, Upside Down, Melanin, Emanzini, Tembisa, Morongwa,The Beginning is Within, Moving, Smoke and Mirrors, and The Shower.

Adopt a cop safer school visit and talk in Olifantsfontein
by Staff Writer
T
he Olifantsfontein police station visited Madibatlou Middle School during an adopt a cop school initiative. SAPS Vispol Commander Captain Magazi, Communication officer Constable Skoti, two sector managers and the youth desk were among the team who visited the school. Magazi addressed the learners of his adopted school to stay away from drugs, liquor and not steal each other’s belongings as they are a family. He further urged learners to assist those who are suffering by informing the Principal and educators.
Men For Development in South Africa by Dumisani Hlatswayo
O
zzi Phiri (46) is the founder of a nonprofit organisation called, Men For Development In South Africa (MFDISA). The organisation was founded in 2004, and it is currently growing to become a national organisation. “What inspired me to start this organisation was my personal experience. There are people who can attest to how abusive I was. But, through attending similar programs I managed to change. So, I was inspired to do something of this nature. That’s why I regard myself as an ambassador of change,” says Phiri. They have two branches, one in Clayville extension and another in Ivory Park extension two. Phiri says the purpose of his organisation is to have programs that are geared towards preventing violence against women and children. In addition, provide services to victims of abuse. He says, victims of violence get psychosocial counselling provided by a social worker.
Some of the victims were referred to Phiri’s organisation by family members, while others were referred by the police. However, Phiri is quick to point out that they still meet those victims who treat gender-based violence as a domestic issue that can be resolved privately. “We also visit local clinics where we meet women with a blue eye, mostly on Monday morning. So, when you see a woman like that you know that she was assaulted over the weekend. Our mandate is to create awareness to such victims, tell them how they can be assisted in terms of opening cases and taking the matter further,” says Phiri. He adds: “We also assist perpetrators through the process of change. We assist perpetrators by creating awareness around issues of genderbased violence. We look at what are the contributing factors and come up with solutions as men. Then we host sessions and invite social workers to provide counselling to those who may not want to speak.” He says, they reach out to men by word of mouth.
Ozzi Phiri
Phiri says, they have seen progress in the community from the studies they conduct every year to measure progress. “We also have a school intervention program whereby we target boy learners. We try to groom them and make them understand the issue of violence while they are still young. We target high school learners from grade 10 to 12. So far, we are getting positive feedback from schools,” says Phiri. “I believe something magical will only happen if men will look at themselves and try to do something about their problem.”
He went on to tell them that weapons are not allowed at school premises, and that bullying won’t be tolerated. Magazi also congratulated those who passed their grade last year and encouraged those who failed not to give up. Meanwhile, Olifantsfontein Communication officer Constable Skoti welcomed the learners. She advised them to refrain from wrongdoing to ensure that they have a brighter future. Skoti went on to caution learners to be wary of strangers. Furthermore, she encouraged learners to respect their teachers and maintain good relationships with them.

Gauteng Education concerned about liquor outlets close to schools by Dumisani Hlatswayo
T
he Gauteng Education Department will continue the process of shutting down taverns and shebeens situated next to schools. The Department received a petition on behalf of residents of Cresslawn, in Ekurhuleni – east of Johannesburg, alleging that there is a shebeen operating next to a primary school in the area. According to the Gauteng Liquor Act, shebeens or bottle stores should not be situated within a 500-metre
radius of a place of worship or an educational institution. Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says, “We are moving to more shebeens because the process to shut one, is too long. That is why we are concentrating on all those that are found near our schools. Those that are close to our schools, which were there already, we will persuade them to relocate to other areas. But those that came when we had already built the schools, we have no choice but to shut them down.”
There are reportedly several liquor outlets operating within 500 metres of 10 schools in Ward 73 Benoni, Ekurhuleni. This was revealed by the Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi in a written reply to the DA questions tabled in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL). According to the MEC, there are 10 schools that are within 500 metres of liquor outlets in Ward 73 Benoni. He states that his department and the Liquor Board
frequently interact regarding the approval of liquor licenses for outlets situated near schools. The DA says the Gauteng Liquor Board is contravening Section 30 (3) of the Gauteng Liquor Act 2 of
2003 which states that the Gauteng Liquor Board shall grant an application in the case of premises not situated within a radius of 500 metres in the vicinity of a place of worship and educational institution.
How to ace that job interview M Firearm amnesty extended to 31 May 2020
T
he firearm amnesty period has been officially declared open for South Africans to surrender illegal or unwanted firearms, ammunition or firearm parts from December 1 to May 31, 2020. The citizens are encouraged to hand over their firearm and ammunition at their nearest police stations. All the surrendered firearms will undergo an Integrated Ballistic Identification System (IBIS) testing to determine whether it might have been involved in crime. This period also allows firearm owners with an expired license to renew their licenses and those who have more than one firearm to hand over the other gun to be protected during the break-ins in

their properties. The South African Minister of Police, Bheki Cele said: “We believe that the process will go well.” He further said when the period ends, law will be tough on those who persist on carrying unlicensed guns. Constable P. Skoti, Olifantsfontei n police st ation spokesperson said: “I am appealing to all South Africans who are still in possession of illegal firearms and unwanted firearms to surrender them at Olifantsfontein police station and without any fear of prosecution.” If anyone has a question regarding the amnesty firearm they can visit or contact Olifantsfontein SAPS on 011-316 8020.

ost job hunters these days feel that employers dictate terms in our country where unemployment stands at 29%. That statement is only partially true. By using the right strategies and a systematic approach to interviewing you can greatly increase chances of landing that job. Here are some tips: 1. Do some research Today it’s easy enough to check out prospective employers online. Check their company website and Facebook page. Also, go the extra mile in your research using sites like LinkedIn and ZoomInfo to learn about the competition and marketplace. 2. Interview questions Consider how you’ll answer
common interview questions, as well as preparing some questions you’d like to ask the interviewer. 3. Read the job description again This will allow you to prepare answers that may come up. If you completed an application form, go over it to refresh your memory of how your skills and qualifications match the role you’re applying for. 4. Find out who will be interviewing you The email inviting you to the interview may include this information. Use LinkedIn and the ‘About us’ section of the company website to find out more about their professional interests and experience of those people.

New ruby team to be launched in Olifantsfontein by Dumisani Hlatswayo
D
evin Nguruve and Nordino Amuza (21) are about to establish a rugby team of 20 players in Olifantsfontein. If you enjoy being active and want to build your fitness with team mates then this is the game for you. They are looking for people between the ages of 12 and 25. They want their team to be one of the most inclusive teams in Ekurhuleni. Nguruve says he was inspired by one of his uncle’s who used to play rugby in New Zealand around 2003. “Another reason to start the team is because there are no people who play rugby in Olifantsfontein. Everyone is playing soccer.” Camaraderie and teamwork are vital skills in most team sports, but none to the same extent as in rugby. Nguruve and Amuza understand this because they themselves played rugby in school. “I moved here 10 years ago and
there was a tennis court but it was never used. I thought maybe a basketball would work but most people are not into it. I think rugby could work here,” says Amuza. From scrummaging to tackling, sprinting with the ball, rugby can be a high intensity workout that will boost players fitness and strength. “We want to practice from Monday to Friday, but because some people won’t be able to attend week days, we will also practice on weekends or Fridays from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm,” says Nguruve. “For now we need someone who can help us with jerseys and balls. Even if it’s one jersey that would be fine. If we start training now I think by April we will start playing one or two games.” Nguruve says. “We also need sponsors who can help us with essentials such as sport drinks and medical kit,” says Amuza.
