welcome ! Hello everyone. Welcome to the first issue of PaperDoll magazine! We are so excited to share with you everything we have been working on over the past 6 months! PaperDoll has been a labour of love and it’s fantastic to finally see all that hard work pay off. The idea of PaperDoll started off as just that; an idea so to see it finished and here for you to enjoy is a wonderful feeling. This issue is dedicated to the coming summer months, and is jam packed with fashion, music, inspiration and tons of creative young women who without their help none of this would have been possible! Over the following pages you will find the latest fashion trends and reviews. We have interviews with teen bloggers and showcases of some seriously talented photographers. We also bring you our special fashion editorials. Summer Skin was a pleasure to capture, being outside in the sunshine and having a brilliant day out, turn to page 62 to see it for yourself! Here at PaperDoll we’ve been busy lusting after heartthrob Robert Pattinson and on page 58 we write exactly what we think about the whole Twilight phenomena. If music is your thing, check out our feature on No Doubt and not forgetting the new album reviews.

Here however we have four super talented and equally stylish women that mix together both fashion and music in equal parts. They have created their own personal looks and influence trends, quite unknowingly. We love them for being individual and not being your stereotypical music barbie doll. These women have real passion for the music they create and the people they play too, they also show amazing personal style and fashionability. Quirky, kookie and relatable their styles are all different but at the same time similar because none of them really give a crap about following trends or doing it for anyone else’s benefit. They all have different musical styles to match their individual looks. Hayley from Paramore is like the new Gwen Stefani but with bright flaming red hair, and a slightly more casual alternative style. She dresses for herself and wont be pressured into wearing something she isn’t comfortable with, similarly Pip Brown a.k.a Ladyhawke refuses to be dressed by anyone but herself, preferring boys clothes to expensive dresses and heels. Lykke Li has created a look all her own, that has inspired many a new trend. That quirky sense of swedish style mixed in with an art house esthetic has caught everyones attention, she also makes seriously sweet music too. Natasha Khan a.k.a Bat for Lashes has a unique style all of her own, with captivating stage style and an essence of cool. There’s an eliment of childlike dress up mixed with a pyschadelic colour palette and her music is much the same. Fashion and music= heaps of inspiration!

Sanna Annuka Sanna Annukka is probably best known as the talented artist who produced Keanes iconic album cover Under the Iron Sea. Born and based in Brighton, Sanna’s work is a mix of finnish folklore and bold naturalistic shapes. In our exclusive interview Sanna talks about how she began her career and how she gets inspired.

I’m half Finnish and half English. I was born in Brighton (in 1983) but spent my childhood yo-yoing between Finland and England. Most summers were spent in a village called Paltaniemi in northern Finland, where most of my family still live to today. My best memories are from my childhood days in Finland, going to Lapland, exploring forests, swimming and fishing in lakes, observing the fantastic wildlife. It’s such a beautiful country and the culture there heavily inspires my work.

anticipated as we want to make it bespoke and desired as possible (but not ridiculously expensive) so i’m working on illustrated packaging and creating a special range of prints to sell with the jewellery.

Tell me about your collaboration with your friend, jewellery designer Giles Reeves. How did the idea for the collection come about? Giles is a good friend of mine and i’ve admired his approach to creating jewellery as he is very experimental. We kind of decided at the same time that we should work together-it just fell in to place. Using my illustrations and designs Giles will interpret them into jewellery. We are going to launch the range much later than originally

Let’s start by talking about where you are from and about your childhood, do you think this has influenced you as an illustrator?

What has been the achievement in your journey so far?

The Keane commission was a great achievement, I was overwhelmed with the positive response to the campaign. I have now set up a company/print business and launching an online shop through my website selling limited edition prints of my artwork as well as clothing, other textiles, calendars, books etc. My goal is to build a product range of printed goods with my artwork on them, I suppose a bit like what Orla Kiely has done. My new range of prints which will launch when the shop opens will be some of my best work to date.

I wanted to be an artist since the age of 7, I always kept sketchbooks and would often sit outside and draw the surrounding landscape. I also started doodling patterns from an early age. I love pattern work and decoration and so I like to infuse it within my work as often as possible.

What was the last thing you saw that really inspired you?

What might people be suprised to learn about your occupation? It can be very very emotionally stressful! What’s the best thing about being an artist in Brighton?

A really beautiful patterned coffee tin from the sixties, I had to buy it. I’ve built up a collection of decorative

I love Brighton, it’s perfectly located. 5 6

The sea is a ten minute walk from my flat. Brighton also has a very friendly artistic community. We are lucky to have events like the May festival. Finally, what makes Annukka happy?

Sanna

Quite a lot of things make me happy! I love being in a print studio printing new work, but one of the most magical feelings is snowboarding through powdery snow, surrounded by mountains and forests.
