TOUR HOST – JOHN WADE For the past nine+ years John Wade has been a familiar figure at Commonwealth Golf Club as part of the golf shop team and providing a service to our Members as one of our Teaching Professionals. John played most sports as a boy. However golf became his game of choice from the age of 16. He joined Victoria Golf Club where he established his career as one of Australia’s best amateurs prior to turning professional. After 30 years of membership at Victoria, John still has the honour of holding the course record. Prior to joining the professional ranks, John spent two years at the University of Houston in the late 80’s, where Australia’s Steve Elkington was a mentor. Wade represented Australia in the 1990 Eisenhower Trophy in New Zealand and won the Swiss Amateur in 1991. Upon turning professional in 1992, John played the Australian, European and Challenge Tours. Highlights included placing second to Curtis Strange at the Greg Norman Classic in 1993 and winning the Irish Classic in 2006. In the past 10 years John has played his way into the British Open twice, in 2005 at St Andrews and in 2013 at Muirfield. During the course of qualifying in 2013, John fired a course record 63 at Dunbar Golf Club. John has a tendency to shoot some low numbers. He provided exciting viewing

to Members when he fired a course record in the opening round of the 2014 Perth International at Lake Karrinyup, taking the lead going into round two. John’s playing schedule has scaled down in recent years & this has provided him with an opportunity to pursue coaching as another demonstration of his passion for the game. John has just turned 50 and now has his sights set on playing on the Seniors Tours and testing his game against some of the legends of the game. John’s travels, experience playing the world’s finest courses and his endearing personality make him the perfect host for your trip. All members will enjoy at least one round of golf.

Subject: 2019 “Lancashire Links” Tour Dear Commonwealth Golf Club Member, Please find attached detailed information regarding my proposed 2019 Tour of Lancashire. This trip is for golfers looking to play our sport’s historic Links, highlighted by our rounds at Royal Lytham, Royal Birkdale & Royal Liverpool (Hoylake). I will be hosting and playing on the entire tour and look forward to enjoying the “Trip of a Lifetime” with you. The tour commences formally at 19:00 on Sunday 11/08/2019 with our welcome drinks reception at Wrightington Country Club, our home for 2 weeks. In order to provide travellers with maximum flexibility in terms of “Inward” and “Outward” travel arrangements, the tour covers ‘Ground Content’ only. The cost is A$12,000 per person (inc. single room), which I feel is excellent value for a first class trip featuring tee times at venues of this quality. I look forward to the chance to visit some of golf’s iconic venues and play these great courses together!

A ROYAL WELCOME England’s Golf Coast, an absolute golfing powerhouse. The North-West of England is unquestionably one of the game’s links golf hotbeds with more than a dozen courses strung out along a 50-mile stretch of glorious coastline. Naturally, it’s the Holy Trinity of Royal Liverpool, Royal Birkdale and Royal Lytham – with 32 Open Championships between them – that grab all the headlines, but ignore the supporting cast at your peril. The likes of Formby, Hillside, West Lancs and Southport & Ainsdale are superstars in their own right and will help you to create a links tour itinerary that’s fit for a King.

THE COURSES ROYAL LYTHAM & ST ANNES GOLF CLUB Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club was founded in 1886 and the present Course constructed in 1897. The Clubhouse celebrated its Centenary in 1998. It is one of the premier links courses in the world, host to eleven Open Championships, two Ryder Cups and numerous other major tournaments including the Women’s and Seniors Open Championships and the Walker Cup in 2015. Northern hospitality has always been famous and Royal Lytham leads the way. You will be made very welcome.

ROYAL LYTHAM & ST ANNES GOLF CLUB

ROYAL BIRKDALE GOLF CLUB Situated on the golden links of the North West coast in Southport, Royal Birkdale is possibly the finest of all courses in England. Royal Birkdale has held more Championship and International events since World War II than any other course in the world. Open Championships, Ryder Cups, Women’s British Opens, Senior Opens, Amateur Championships, Walker Cups and Curtis Cups. Royal Birkdale Golf Club has been voted the number one golf club in England, one of the top five clubs in the UK and amongst the top 35 in the world. Visitors are assured of a warm welcome on and off the course delivering a golfing experience second to none. ROYAL LIVERPOOL GOLF CLUB (HOYLAKE) A return to The Open rota after 39 years in 2006, demonstrated that Hoylake could host major events. The new infrastructure has ensured that a steady stream of prestigous events have entered the diary. The fabled mighty winds did not blow, but there was no denying that another mighty champion was born... in the shape of one Eldrick “Tiger” Woods. The event was deemed a fantastic success and attracted huge crowds, with the total attendance the second highest in Open history. 2012 saw the first ever playing of the Woman’s British Open at Hoylake. In 2014, Rory McIlroy clinched his first Open Championship and third major title with a two-shot victory over Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler on a thrilling final day at Hoylake. Further into the future we get the chance to host the Walker Cup in our proud history and role in the development of the Amateur game with this fantastic event. Some great new chapters await.

ROYAL BIRKDALE GOLF CLUB

ROYAL LIVERPOOL GOLF CLUB

HILLSIDE GOLF CLUB A true championship links, overhauled in the 1960’s by renowned architect Fred Hawtree. Hillside is regarded as probably the finest links golf course not to have hosted the Open Championship. The club has a track record of staging some of the highest profile professional and amateur tournaments including the 1982 PGA Championship (Tony Jacklin’s final professional victory) and twice the Amateur Championship, in 1979 and more recently in the Club’s centenary year 2011. In 2014 Hillside was chosen to stage The Open Championship final qualifying for a run of four years. The layout of the course is balanced in two halves with the opening holes heading south westward along flat ground beside the railway line. The flatter nine holes of the opening half whet the golfer’s appetite for the contrast that awaits on second nine. Here you will find valleyed corridors through some of the highest and wildest dunes found anywhere. Each hole occupying its own unique site never shared with another. Double Open Champion Australian Greg Norman graciously wrote an unsolicited note to the Club after playing in the PGA tournament at Hillside in 1982 stating the: ‘The back nine holes are the Best in Britain.’ Jack Nicklaus described the course as ‘…a wild looking links’ and added that ‘…within the second nine are some of my favourite holes’. FORMBY GOLF CLUB Formby Golf Club is a true championship links course unlike any other. Running through the mature sand dunes and pinewoods of Formby, the course will challenge you at every shot. Accuracy is always at a premium here. The combination of well protected greens, heather bordering rough and challenging tee shots means Formby is a course of magnificent contrasts. Few golfing destinations can rival Formby for the beauty of the course, the variety of the holes and its all year round playability. Formby is truly one of the world’s finest Championship links golf courses. Throw in spectacular scenery, a historic clubhouse, a wonderful restaurant with stunning panoramic views over the course and warm, welcoming bar, it’s little wonder this fabulous golf club seduces so easily.

FORMBY GOLF CLUB

SOUTHPORT & AINSDALE GOLF CLUB Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club - Est. 1906. A James Braid masterpiece nestled amongst rolling links land. A two time Ryder Cup venue and top 100 ranked UK course. A testing championship course with first class facilities, S&A – as it is widely and affectionately known, was founded in 1906, part of the great golf boom around the turn of the 20th century. Inevitably the passing of so many years has brought about changes to the course, but the traditional feel of a championship links has been retained. The club has hosted two Ryder Cup matches in 1933 and 1937 and a number of other prestigious championships including The British Ladies’ Open and The British Amateur. It remains a final qualifying course for The Open Championship and it has been voted by one golf magazine as among the top 50 courses in Great Britain. The course is a magnificent test of golf, especially with the sea breeze and profusion of heather and gorse combining to provide a challenging and immensely enjoyable day. The spectacular clubhouse creates a splendid setting for unwinding after a round. The main lounge and patio to the front of the clubhouse provide stunning views across the course, including the 18th green and 1st tee. Complemented with a warm welcome friendly lounge/bar and exceptional catering, everything is in place for a truly memorable experience. WEST LANCASHIRE GOLF CLUB As one of the 10 oldest clubs in England, West Lancashire is full of history and tradition as well as a great golf course, which is currently No. 23 in the National Club Golfers Top 100 rankings. The West Lancashire Golf Club, founded in 1873, is proud of its heritage and continues to host prestigious amateur and professional championships. This year the club has hosted the Lancashire Amateur Championship and then on 24th & 25th June, they once again hosted Regional Qualifying for the 2018 Open Championship. The links are positioned alongside the Mersey estuary and give magnificent views over the river towards Snowdon and North Wales. Following the laying out of the original 9 holes, the course underwent substantial redesign first by James Braid in 1921 and secondly by CK Cotton in 1961 and over time the course has been further improved to reflect modern demands. Donald Steel wrote of the course: “Only in Britain can one savour the true flavour of seaside golf, of which the West Lancashire is a perfect example”.

WEST LANCASHIRE GOLF CLUB

ST ANNE’S OLD LINKS GOLF CLUB Founded in 1901, St Annes Old Links is one of the fine championship links of England’s North West coast and hosted the Local Final Qualifying for The Open in July 2012 held at nearby Royal Lytham & St Annes, the Ladies’ Golf Union Girl’s Home International Matches in August 2013, the English Women’s Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship in August 2015, the Boys’ Home Internationals in early August 2017 and the UK Seniors Golf Association North West Championship at the ST ANNE’S OLD LINKS GOLF CLUB end of August 2018. They are proud to become the first venue to host final qualifying for both the Open Championship and Ricoh Women’s British Open in the same year. The club will continue to host Open Final Qualifying in 2019 - 2021. The Old Links has been voted in “England’s Top 100 courses 2018” by National Club Golfer; in June 2013 issue Golf World’s “Top 100 Golf Courses in England 2013”. Our signature 9th hole was voted by Golf World in the May 2010 issue as the Top 9th Hole in Great Britain and Ireland. The great Bobby Jones is quoted as saying “it’s difficult to see how you could improve on this”. Enough said! WALLASEY GOLF CLUB The Stableford scoring system was devised by Dr Frank Stableford, a member of and Club Captain (1936) Wallasey. The first Stableford competition was played at Wallasey on 16th May 1932. Visitors to the club will be able to see the famous painting of Bobby Jones, by artist and Wallasey member J.A.A.Berrie, RA. Jones sat for the painting during his ‘Grand Slam’ year of 1930, when the Open was held at nearby Hoylake with qualifying at Wallasey. Wallasey is a classic links, originally designed by Tom Morris Snr., but with many later alterations influenced by such illustrious names as Hilton, Hawtree and James Braid. Recent improvements were designed by Donald Steel. Most of the course is played through sand dunes, with few flat lies on tight, running fairways. The greens are firm and fast, and constant sea breezes make clubbing difficult. Wallasey provides a stern but fair challenge, and is a superb test of golf for players of any standard. Wallasey was a Final Qualifying course for the Open Championship when it returned to Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) in 2006’ FAIRHAVEN GOLF CLUB Officially recognised as one of the finest Championship courses in the north of England, Fairhaven Golf Club offers golfers of all handicaps a beautiful place to play golf. Home to professional golf since 1934, Fairhaven has all the characteristics of a traditional links course and is immaculately kept from tee to green, allowing yearround golf. The Club has since hosted many Open Championship Final Qualifying Competitions when the Open Championship was played at neighbouring Royal Lytham & St.Annes Golf Club. The Professionals course record of 64 was achieved by Justin Leonard in 1996, while he was playing in and leading the final qualifying rounds. FAIRHAVEN GOLF CLUB
