Jake Shimabukuro Sun, june 10 @ 6 & 8:30 pm jake Shimabukuro combines the qualities of a virtuoso ukulele player with rock musicians to create a sound that’s uniquely his own but still firmly grounded in hawaiian tradition. known for his energetic strumming on the ukulele, his performance incorporates elements of thoughtful, sophisticated arrangements to spontaneous, improvised passages. in addition to his original compositions, his repertoire includes Queen’s “Bohemian rhapsody,” Schubert’s “ave Maria,” and Cohen’s “hallelujah.” Shimabukuro’s career skyrocketed when a cover of “While My guitar gently Weeps” went viral on youTube with more than 13 million views, opening the rest of the world’s eyes to his unique playing style. in the years since the youTube clip aired, he has collaborated with an array of artists that include yo-yo Ma, jimmy Buffett, Bette Midler, Cyndi lauper, jack johnson, ziggy Marley, dave koz, Michael Mcdonald, and lyle lovett. he’s sold out world-class venues, played at Bonnaroo, SxSW, the playboy jazz Festival, Fuji rock Festival, the influential Ted conference, and even performed for Queen elizabeth ii. Shimabukuro has topped Billboard’s World Music Chart numerous times, been declared a musical “hero” by Rolling Stone Magazine, which also stated, “one of the hottest axemen of the past few years doesn’t actually play guitar.” he has also won accolades from eddie vedder who says, “Shimabukuro is taking the instrument to a place that i can’t see anybody else catching up with.”

Dave Koz and Friends Summer Horns Tour 2018 Featuring Gerald Albright, Rick Braun and Richard Elliot Introducing Aubrey Logan and Adam Hawley

fri, Aug 3 @ 7 & 9:30 pm Back by popular demand dave koz and Friends return with the Summer horns Tour 2018. Following highly successful tours in 2013 and 2014, koz has assembled a powerhouse line up of Brass instrumentation for this summer’s outing. This year, the tour will have the same electric energy delivering hit songs, including releases from the upcoming new album, dave koz and Friends Summer horns, which debuted at number one on Billboard’s Current Contemporary jazz albums chart. hailed by The New York Times as “a musician of unflappable rhythmic aplomb, which he happily squares against the airtight funk of his band,” dave koz will be joined by an all-star lineup, including: gerald albright, known for his acclaimed solo recordings and performances with anita Baker, Whitney houston and The Temptations; rick Braun, chart-topping trumpeter, who has collaborated across genre’s with rod Stewart, Sade and reO Speedwagon; and richard elliot, a former member of Tower of power who has since forged a successful solo career. as part of the stellar lineup of musicians on stage, koz is excited to introduce aubrey logan, known for jammin’ on her trombone or sailing through a song with her nothing-held-back, multi-octave vocal instrument, as well as guitarist adam hawley, named both Smooth jazz news and jazzTrax debut artist of the year. They will play new songs from the forthcoming Summer horns release and songs from their individual catalogues. This live show is sure to be one of the hottest shows the summer and one not to be missed.

monte montgomery thurs, june 7 @ 7 pm you can call it prescient or predetermined, but when Terry lickona, undisputed tastemaker and producer of austin City limits, plucked a then relatively unknown guitar talent to tape a segment of the legendary show, one had the sense that this was just the beginning. Since that jaw dropping performance, Monte Montgomery has embarked on an almost fantasy like rock and roll roller coaster ride filled with dizzying accomplishments and mind blowing accolades. named one of the ‘Top 50 all-Time greatest guitar players‘ by Guitar Player Magazine, he’s been called everything from ‘guitar-god‘ to the ‘answer to the Fermi paradox.‘ long a big draw on the live music scene, Montgomery’s non-stop touring schedule lets fans experience his epic guitar solos, classic covers, and original hits, night after night. Besides his version of ‘little Wing,‘ by jimi hendrix, his cover of ‘Sara Smile‘ on youTube, impressed daryl hall (hall & Oates) so much, he invited Montgomery to be the featured artist on live From daryl’s house, the popular web-based music show.

tish hinojosa very Special guest james mcmurty fri, june 8 @ 8 pm austin’s own, singer-songwriter tish hinojosa, will be releasing her 17th album “WeST” in june. her first stop on the celebration tour will be at One World Theatre on june 8th. WeST, produced by hinojosa’s long time collaborators Marvin dykhuis and Chip dolan, includes a duet with Michael Martin Murphy. The album is yet another brilliant body of displaying hinojosa’s enchanting blend of folk, country and pop while always paying homage to her latino heritage. hinojosa has collaborated with the likes of artists including as joan Baez, Booker T. jones, Flaco jimenez, pete Seeger, and dwight yoakam to name a few. james mcmurtry spins stories with a novelist’s eye. longtime fans know his vibrant vignettes have turned heads for more than a quarter-century.no stranger to sold-out venues, he’s been packing houses with the james McMurtry Band since the release of his first record. in 2004, the popular Live in Aught-Three demonstrated McMurtry & co.’s power on the road. in 2009, the Cd/dvd Live in Europe was released, capturing the band’s first european tour and extraordinary live set. McMurtry tours year round and consistently throws down unparalleled powerhouse performances.

Sounding clay fri, june 29 @ 8 pm Brian ransom is a professor of visual art at eckerd College, a four year liberal arts college in St. petersburg, Florida. his show, Sounding Clay, features what he is most known for – his sounding sculptures and musical instruments whose primary resonators are ceramic, although they increasingly employ an unusual variety of media and installation venues in their presentations. ransom’s musical compositions, which he writes for his original ceramic musical instruments, have been featured in recordings, film and video soundtracks and ballet scores throughout the past twenty years. his sounding sculptures have been exhibited and collected internationally. he has lectured extensively including giving an interactive presentation at harvard university on acoustics. among the awards ransom has received include the national endowment for the arts Fellowship in Sculpture, The Fulbright/hayes Fellowship in peru, and several State arts Commission grants. this show is an independent Artist’s project, supported in part by the cultural Arts division of the city of Austin economic development department.

maria muldaur thurs, july 26 @ 8 pm proving her voice and musical imprint stretches far beyond the greenwich village scene, Maria Muldaur’s remarkable singing career permeates the folk, blues, and american roots music genres. She first began singing with the even dozen jug Band in the 60s (alongside future lovin’ Spoonful founder john Sebastian). her first solo album, Maria Muldaur, released in 1973 featured the Top 10 hit “Midnight at the Oasis.” just a short time later, Muldaur began touring with the grateful dead and eventually connected with bluegrass legend peter rowan. Such is the story of Muldaur’s eclectic career – her prolific recordings (she’s averaged an album a year for over 40 years) and like a chameleon adapts perfectly into the genre to which she’s collaborating. Still, she finds the blues genre to be her best fit. The graMMy awards agree. She’s earned several nominations for her traditional blues albums, most recently 2005’s Sweet Lovin’ Ol Soul.

edwin mccain fri, july 27 @ 8 pm edwin McCain’s voice is everywhere. at any given moment, a radio station is playing one of his songs. an american idol hopeful is belting out ‘i’ll Be.’ a newlywed couple is dancing to ‘i Could not ask for More.’ his songs have over 25 million plays on social media alone that have earned him a wall of platinum and gold albums that have sold in the millions, and reams of Top 10, 20 and 40 hits. McCain is heard belting his hits at over 100 concert halls throughout the country every year. his innate ability to write and perform songs that somehow every listener claims as their own has made him one of the most enduring and downright likable entertainers of our generation. Over a million dr. phil viewers voted ‘i’ll Be‘ as the best wedding song ever written, vh1 calls it one of the ‘greatest love Songs of all Time.’ The New York Times dubs McCain the ‘great american romantic and his fans do certainly agree. McCain roars through soulful renditions of his songs, tosses in irrepressible vintage r&B rhythms and turns his concerts into parties. his between-song-banter is more stand-up than rock star, drawing as many laughs as cheers.’

Join us for the 2018-2019 season The season marks new beginnings and continued traditions at Austin Opera.

Verdi's Otello Puts & Campbell's Silent Night Puccini's La bohème 82

512-472-5992 AUSTINOPERA.ORG THE LONG CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS Saturday Nov. 10, 2018 7:30 PM Thursday Nov. 15, 2018 7:30 PM Sunday Nov. 18, 2018 2:30 PM

As a crackling storm rolls into Cyprus, we are introduced to a trio of figures, each based on Shakespeare’s iconic characters: the victorious naval warrior Otello, his faithful wife Desdemona, and his trusted officer Iago. But soon after the rain subsides, the duplicitous Iago preys upon Otello’s insecurity and suspicion by hatching a plot to have Otello question Desdemona’s fidelity, unleashing a passionate tempest of gale force, with powerfully tragic results. This thoughtful tale of personal and political jealousy is a rarely performed masterwork that will leave Austin audiences breathless.

THE LONG CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

This company premiere of the Pulitzer Prize–winning modern classic Silent Night, with music by Kevin Puts and a libretto by Mark Campbell (The Manchurian Candidate, 2016), is based on the 2005 film Joyeux Noël, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Saturday Jan. 26, 2019 7:30 PM Thursday Jan. 31, 2019 7:30 PM Sunday Feb. 3, 2019 2:30 PM

Silent Night recounts a miraculous moment of peace during one of the bloodiest wars in human history. The year is 1914 and as Christmas Eve falls, soldiers in French, German, and Scottish trenches begin recalling songs of home, stepping into no-man’s-land for a spontaneous truce.

THE LONG CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

Puccini’s sweeping story of young bohemians struggling to fulfill their dreams and find true love contains some of the most beloved music in all of opera. La bohème is frequently referenced in popular culture—from the Academy Award– winning film Moonstruck to the Tony–winning musical Rent— making the story and its music instantly recognizable to even newcomers to opera.

Saturday April 27, 2019 7:30 PM Thursday May 2, 2019 7:30 PM Sunday May 5, 2019 2:30 PM

Austin Opera audiences will soon discover why the Pulitzer committee hailed Silent Night for “displaying versatility of style and cutting straight to the heart.”

This exquisite production is a traditional telling of the classic tale. The City of Light’s snowy streets, drafty tenements, and nightclub diversions come to life in a production certain to linger in the memory long after its final heartrending scene. 83

Opera ATX, powered by Austin Opera, will bring groundbreaking new works, emerging artists, exciting composers, and dynamic directors to Austin. By tapping into our city’s live music DNA, Austin Opera will continue to reflect the spirit of the city and the pioneering image it’s known for. Opera ATX will explore alternative venues and partnerships around town, starting at the historic Paramount Theatre. We will create the conditions for operatic experiences completely new to Austin, and perhaps completely new to the art form. Driven by Austin Opera’s love of opera, love of audiences, and love of Austin, Opera ATX shows how Austin is shaping its opera company and inspiring innovative experiences.

David T. Little's Soldier Songs PARAMOUNT THEATRE

Friday Saturday Apr. 5, 2019 8:00 PM Apr. 6, 2019 8:00 PM Soldier Songs combines elements of theater, opera, rock-infused concert music, and video by filmmaker Bill Morrison to explore themes of loss, the exploitation of innocence, and the difficulty of expressing the truth of war. The libretto, created by the composer, was adapted from recorded interviews with veterans of five wars. Soldier Songs traces changing perceptions of war in our society and by those who experience it. It is a chilling and realistic view of our media-crazed, war-machine culture, and of the nature of power in war.

A NEW INITIATIVE POWERED BY AUSTIN OPERA

84

With its poignant libretto, driving music, and surprising visual counterpoint, Soldier Songs perfectly represents the promise of Opera ATX: bringing innovative new works, sensational artists, and visionary creative teams to Austin.

A World Apart, A Moment Together One World & TRIAD funds of the San Antonio Area Foundation Connecting Central Texas Military Families One World’s innovative performing arts summer camp program provided scholarships through TRIAD funds of the San Antonio Area Foundation to give kids the opportunity to be a part of the musical production of “Wizard of Oz.” When the campers took the stage every parent, no matter where they were located, including Iraq was able to see their child perform. Using amazing video technology generously provided by a partnership with LifeSize Communications, seven military bases were connected to One World Theatre, so that parent and child could see, talk and interact with each other as if they were in the same room. After the performance, each child and their family was given the opportunity to talk privately with their loved one, keeping the bond of family alive across the miles.
