About Janis Joplin That voice—high, husky, earthy, explosive— remains among the most distinctive and galvanizing in pop history. But Janis Joplin didn’t merely possess a great instrument; she threw herself into every syllable, testifying from the very core of her being. She claimed the blues, soul, gospel and rock with unquestionable authority and verve, fearlessly inhabiting psychedelic guitar jams, back-porch roots and everything in between. Her volcanic performances left audiences stunned and speechless, while her sexual magnetism, world-wise demeanor and flamboyant style shattered every stereotype about female artists—and essentially invented the “rock mama” paradigm. Born in Port Arthur, Texas on January 19, 1943, Joplin fell under the sway of Leadbelly, Bessie Smith and Big Mama Thornton in her teens, and the authenticity of these voices strongly influenced Janis’ decision to become a singer. A self-described “misfit” in high school, she suffered virtual ostracism, but dabbled in folk music with her friends and painted. She briefly attended college in Beaumont and Austin but was more drawn to blues legends and beat poetry than her studies; soon she dropped out and, in 1963, headed for San Francisco, eventually finding herself in the notoriously drug-fueled Haight Ashbury neighborhood. She returned to Texas to escape the excesses of the Haight, enrolling as a sociology student at Lamar University, adopting a beehive hairdo and living a generally “straight” life despite occasional forays to perform in Austin. But California drew her back into its glittering embrace in 1966, when Janis joined the Haight-based psychedelic-rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company. Her adoption of a wild sartorial style—with frizzed-out hair, bangles, and extravagant attire that winked, hippie-style, at the burlesque era—further spiked her burgeoning reputation. The band’s increasingly high-profile shows earned them a devoted fan base and serious industry attention; they signed with Columbia Records and released their major-label debut in 1967. Of course, it was Joplin’s seismic presence that caused all the commotion, as evidenced by her shattering performance in June of that year at the Monterey Pop Festival, which was captured for posterity by filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker; in the film, fellow pop star Mama Cass Elliot can be seen mouthing the word, “Wow,” as Joplin tears her way through “Ball And Chain.”
Big Brother’s “Piece of My Heart,” on 1968’s Cheap Thrills LP, shot to the #1 spot, the album sold a million copies in a month, and Joplin became a sensation—earning rapturous praise from Time and Vogue, appearing on The Dick Cavett Show and capturing the imagination of audiences that had never experienced such fiery intensity in a female rock singer. Her departure from Big Brother and emergence as a solo star were inevitable; she put together her own outfit, the Kozmic Blues Band, and in 1969 released I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!, which immediately went gold. That year also saw her give a historic performance at Woodstock. Joplin assembled a new backup group, the Full Tilt Boogie Band, in 1970; she also joined the Grateful Dead, the Band and other artists for the “Festival Express” railroad tour through Canada. Her musical evolution followed the earthier, rootsier direction of the new decade, as reflected in her final studio album, the landmark Pearl. Embracing material such as Kris Kristofferson’s gorgeous ballad “Me and Bobby McGee” and her own a cappella plaint, “Mercedes Benz,” the disc showcased Joplin’s mastery of virtually all pop genres. The latter song was, along with a phone-message birthday greeting for John Lennon, the last thing she recorded; she died in October of 1970, and Pearl was released posthumously the following year. The quadruple-platinum set became the top-selling release of Joplin’s career and, in 2003, was ranked #122 on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” In the years since, Janis Joplin’s recordings and filmed performances have cemented her status as an icon, inspiring countless imitators and musical devotees. Myriad hit collections, live anthologies and other releases have kept her legend alive, as have shows such as the hit Love, Janis (which Joplin’s sister, Laura, helped create) and 2009’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe “Best Solo Performance” nominee Janis. A documentary film, produced by Alex Gibney and Jeff Jampol and directed by Oscar nominee Amy Berg, is currently in production. In 1988, the Janis Joplin Memorial, featuring a bronze sculpture by artist Douglas Clark, was unveiled in Port Arthur. Joplin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and posthumously given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. But such honors only made official what rock fans already knew: that she was among the greatest, most powerful singers the form had ever known—and that she’d opened the door for countless artists across the musical spectrum. The Who's Who of the Joplinaires All artists take their inspiration from people, places and things that surround them and that came before them. Here is a look into a few of the amazing women who inspired Janis Joplin and are represented in the musical. BESSIE SMITH (April 15, 1894 — September 26, 1937) Jazz and blues vocalist Bessie Smith had a powerfully soulful voice and earned her the title of Empress of the Blues. Smith was discovered by blues vocalist Ma Rainey in 1912, and signed with Columbia Records in 1923. Her wildly popular song, “Downhearted Blues,” propelled her first record to sell an estimated 800,000 copies. Before long Smith was among the highest paid black performers of her time. Smith spent her career working alongside important jazz performers, including saxophonist Sidney Bechet, pianists Fletcher Henderson and James P. Johnson — with whom she recorded one of her most famous songs, “Backwater Blues” — and legendary jazz artist Louis Armstrong. Smith, and her music, was a major influence for countless female vocalists including Billie Holliday, Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin. ODETTA (December 31, 1930 — December 2, 2008) Credited with supplying the soundtrack of the civil rights movement and inspiring musicians from Bob Dylan to Joan Baez and Janis Joplin, Odetta used music to work on the hate and fury she felt. In 1956, Odetta released her first solo album, “Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues”, which became an instant classic in American folk music. During the 1960s, Odetta lent her powerful voice to the cause of black equality, performing at political rallies, demonstrations and benefits. In 1963 she gave the most iconic performance of her life, singing from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, during the March on Washington. Odetta was awarded the National Medal of Arts, made a Kennedy Center honoree, and awarded the Living Legend Award by the Library of Congress. NINA SIMONE (February 21, 1933 — April 21, 2003) An icon of American music, Nina Simone, was one of the most extraordinary artists of the twentieth century. The classically trained pianist reigned over the 1950s and ‘60s, singing a mixture of jazz, blues and folk music, and was coined the High Priestess of Soul. In 1957, Simone released her first album, scoring a Top 20 hit with "I Loves You Porgy." She released a bevy of albums from the ‘50s — ‘70s, putting her own spin on songs like Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’” and the Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun.” A staunch civil rights activist, Simone became known as the voice of the civil rights movement. With songs like “Mississippi Goddam,” written in response to the 1963 assassination of Medgar Evers and the Birmingham church bombing that killed four young African-American girls, Simone left a lasting impression on the world of music, art and activism. She sang to share her truth, and inspired an array of performers, including Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin and Lauryn Hill while doing so. 42
53482 PAPI PROGRAM 7 1_22_2020
The Who's Who of the Joplinaires ETTA JAMES (January 25, 1938 — January 20, 2012) Etta James was a Gospel singing prodigy by age five, and grew to be a Grammy award-winning singer known for hit songs like “I’d Rather Go Blind” and “At Last.” Rhythm & Blues bandleader Johnny Otis took James under his wing, renamed his protégé, recorded her number one hit R&B song “Roll With Me Henry,” and took her on tour with Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson, Ike and Tina Turner and Little Richard. In 1968 Chess Records sent her to Alabama to record at Fame Studios, resulting in her next top 10 R&B hit, “Tell Mama” — a song that Janis Joplin would later cover. Her 1973 album “Etta James” earned a Grammy nomination for its creative combination of rock and funk sounds, and she won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album for “Let’s Roll” in 2003. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. ARETHA FRANKLIN (March 25, 1942 — August 16, 2018 ) Multiple Grammy award-winning Aretha Franklin is due the R-E-S-P-E-C-T she sings about. A gifted pianist with a powerful voice, Franklin started singing in front of her father’s congregation, and released her first album, “Songs of Faith” in 1956. She signed with Columbia Records in 1960 and released “Aretha” in 1961. Franklin churned out a string of singles that would become enduring classics, showcasing her powerful voice and gospel roots in a pop framework. In 1967, she released “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)” with the first track, “Respect,” reaching No. 1 on both the R&B and pop charts, and winning Franklin her first two Grammy awards. Franklin’s chart dominance made her a symbol of black empowerment, and in 1968 she performed at Dr. King’s funeral. Ms. Franklin won 18 Grammys, with eight consecutive wins for best R&B female vocal performance in the ‘70s. In 1987 Franklin became the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the Kennedy Center Honors, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Additionally, Franklin sang at both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama’s presidential inaugurations. Like those before her, she paved the way and provided inspiration for Janis Joplin, helping to shape the amazing musician she became. Credit: anightwithjanisjoplin.com

A Night with Janis Joplin Director Notes
Photo: A Night with Janis Joplin, 2012 – Mary Bridget Davies as Janis Joplin. Credit: Joan Marcus.
A Night with Janis Joplin was conceived almost 10 years ago and began its production journey almost immediately after it was written. When I met with Laura Joplin and Michael Joplin and they shared their stories of growing up with their sister I was struck by the humanity of the Joplin family. Hard working parents who raised their children well. Dorothy Joplin played Broadway show tunes for the siblings on cleaning day, once they learned to write their name they headed straight to the Gates Memorial library to get a library card. These three siblings were raised like the rest of us. One of them went on to be one of the greatest voices of all time. In her words and her music Janis Joplin endures and I trust that her legend will live on for generations to come.
In conceiving the show, I had a choice of the story that would be told. I felt that too much attention has been paid in the past to her mythic dark side and not enough attention to what made the woman that endures today. I felt the joy of her life and times, as well as her deep original thinking the truth of her life needed to be told, celebrated and honored. A theatrical portrait emerged. Through the magic of theatre – Janis Joplin’s muses, her extraordinary influences Bessie Smith, Odetta, The Chantels, Nina Simone, Etta James, and Aretha Franklin are portrayed here as part of the fabric that created the artist that Joplin became. A Night with Janis Joplin is Janis’ story but it is our story as well. We are all a result of our influences and the stories they tell us – they truly become the fabric of our lives.
There will never be another Janis Joplin. Her fame was earned, her following grew as she grew. People were drawn to her as she was drawn to them. She was an extraordinary person. People like to say she was “ahead of her time” but I happen to believe that she was right on time Janis lives on today all these years after her untimely death because she is an authentic force in the landscape of our culture.
The ZACH Theatre played an essential role on our path to Broadway and it is good to be back in Austin where if feels like home to all of us. Thank you to Dave Steakley and the entire staff here for making this happen once again. I am truly grateful. – Randy Johnson, Director

DAVE STEAKLEY (Producing Artistic Director) is now in his 29th season, and is dedicated to creating a theatre of, by and for Austin. Led by Dave’s vision, the creation of the Topfer Theatre came to fruition, opening in October 2012 with the acclaimed musical Ragtime. Dave is committed to a dialogue that is inclusive, because other voices and other perspectives enrich our lives, and help us to become more empathic and thoughtful people. He relishes the opportunity to engage our Central Texas region in a lively, meaningful dialogue to cultivate a greater sense of community for everyone who calls Austin home. Dave envisions ZACH as the meeting tent where our community gathers because it has investment, ownership, and representation in our creative work. With Dave as artistic leader, ZACH has produced multiple World Premieres by Terrence McNally, Anna Deavere Smith, Steven Dietz, Jaston Williams, Everett Quinton, John Walch, Allen Robertson, and The Flaming Idiots. ZACH served as the Central Texas hub of the nationwide 365 Plays/365 Days Festival by Suzan-Lori Parks. Dave created the first bilingual adaptation of Webber and Rice’s musical Jesucristo Superstar, and set The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in Katrina-ravaged New Orleans with a jazz/R&B reinvention, which received national acclaim from The New York Times. Dave has directed many ZACH productions, and some favorite experiences include: The Ballad of Klook and Vinette; Notes From the Field; Sunday in the Park with George; The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time; The Great Society; All the Way; Disney's Mary Poppins; Tribes; Mothers and Sons; The Who’s Tommy; The Gospel at Colonus; Next to Normal; August: Osage County; Rent; Metamorphoses; Caroline, or Change; The Clean House; Take Me Out; Crowns; Omnium-Gatherum; Jelly’s Last Jam; The America Play; Dreamgirls; Angels in America; and the first professional repertory production of The Laramie Project, and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. His regional directing credits include Actors Theatre of Louisville, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, New Stage Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, WaterTower Theatre, and Pittsburgh’s City Theatre. He is the playwright of ZACH’s A Christmas Carol, Rockin’ Christmas Party, and Keepin’ It Weird, featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, and American Theatre. Dave has served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, Texas Medal of the Arts, and the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. The City of Austin Mayor declared, May 18, 2001 and October 22, 2011 as “Dave Steakley Day” on the occasion of his 10th and 20th ZACH Anniversaries. He is the recipient of the 2015 First Tee of Greater Austin Courtesy Award, the 2013 Human Rights Campaign Austin Visibility Award, 2010 Kick Ass Award, 2005 Austin Circle of Theaters’ “Outstanding Contribution to Austin Theatre” Award, eight Austin Chronicle “Best of Austin Best Stage Director” awards, the 2000 Austin Under 40 Outstanding Arts and Entertainment Award. In 2009, he was crowned Austin Dancing with the Stars Champion, and he has a cameo in Richard Linklater’s film Bernie. 50

ELISBETH CHALLENER (Managing Director) just completed her 12th year at ZACH Theatre as Managing Director, with responsibility for strategic planning, management, finances, marketing, and fundraising for the organization. Under Elisbeth’s leadership, ZACH successfully designed, built, and opened the Topfer Theatre, which has won significant awards and widespread acclaim, completing the largest capital campaign in the theatre’s history and transforming ZACH’s role in both Austin and the national theatre landscape. Other accomplishments during her dozen years at ZACH include the creation of a multi-year strategic plan that is moving the organization into the next phase of its commitment to new work, increasing revenue from ticket sales by 165%, and growing annual contributed revenue by 199%. At a time when many arts organizations in Austin and around the nation have been struggling, ZACH has grown its operating budget from $3 million to more than $10 million dollars and has operated “in the black” throughout Elisbeth’s tenure! Before moving to Austin, Elisbeth was Executive Director of Montalvo Arts Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. She led Montalvo’s growth from a small, communitybased organization into a major presenting venue and home to an internationally acclaimed Artists’ Residency Program. During nearly two decades at Montalvo, her other accomplishments included increasing ticket sales from less than $500,000 to more than $4 million, expanding the patron base from 6,000 to 80,000 and raising more than $20 million for capital projects. Earlier in her career, Elisbeth served as Administrative Director for the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Education/Outreach Director of the Fairmount Theatre of the Deaf and as department chair and faculty member of the performing arts department of The Purnell School in New Jersey. Elisbeth graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in Drama and Musical Theatre. She attended the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program, The Center for Excellence in Nonprofit Management Leaders Institute in San Jose, California and served in leadership roles for the American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley, Saratoga Rotary Club, and the Arts Council of Silicon Valley. She has been honored by San Jose Magazine, the Austin Business Journal, and the State of California for her work in the arts. Elisbeth is the current President of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre in New York City, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to nurturing the development, production, and presentation of new and classic musicals. She has been a panelist for The Houston Arts Alliance, City of Austin, National Alliance for Musical Theatre, National Fund for New Musicals, and Theatre Communications Group. Elisbeth has always had a passion for theatre and performed for many years in summer stock, dinner theatre, and semi-professional productions on the East Coast and in California. 51

2019–20 Season The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show January 18–April 26, 2020 | The Kleberg
Roe April 8–May 3, 2020 | The Topfer
Created by Jonathan Rockefeller Based on the books by Eric Carle Directed by Shannon Fox
Written by Lisa Loomer
At age 27, Austin attorney Sarah Weddington won the landmark 1973 case Roe v Wade that legalized abortion, making her the youngest person to ever successfully argue a case before the Supreme Court. A national debate ensued, and a divide in America endures over this controversial issue. What most people don’t know is that after the case, Ms. Weddington and Norma McCorvey, “Jane Roe” the plaintiff, took divergent life paths that reflect this complicated polarization in our culture. Poignant, surprising, and with unexpected humor, Roe illuminates the difficult choices women make and the passion each side has for its cause.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar and his menagerie of animal friends have arrived at ZACH! Little ones will go wide-eyed with excitement as they recite along to their favorite Eric Carle classics like Brown Bear, Brown Bear, 10 Little Rubber Ducks, and The Very Lonely Firefly. Each story is brought to life by an array of faithfully recreated puppets that will enchant and engage both adults and children as they leap off the page and onto the stage.

Individual Contributors ZACH Theatre thanks the following individuals and family foundations for their generous gifts to support the work on our stages and in the community. This list reflects individual contributions to our Annual Fund from January 1, 2019 to January 1, 2020. To join our family of supporters, please contact Brittney Woolley at 512-476-0594 x270, or email bwoolley@zachtheatre.org. The Great Scotts are a group of individuals and couples who substantially support ZACH Theatre with annual gifts of $1,500 or more. The enhanced financial commitment made by the Great Scotts enables ZACH to bring important culture opportunities to our Central Texas community, and in turn through year round social events and behind-the-scenes activities, the Great Scotts have a tremendous amount of fun! We deeply appreciate and thank our current Great Scotts and annual fund members.

Latecomers and Seating At show time, all empty seats are released back to the house to seat those patrons on stand-by. If you are running late to your performance, phone the Box Office so that we are aware that you are on your way and can hold your seats. Any patron arriving after curtain will be seated at the discretion of House Management. Our ushers will show you to your seat, if it’s easily accessible. If the seat is not accessible, you will be shown to an available seat at a break. At intermission, you’re welcome to relocate to your ticketed seat location.
Special Needs A Box Office Associate will be pleased to assist you with any special seating needs when you purchase your tickets. We have wheelchair and limited mobility seating in all of our theatres, and provide accessible restrooms, entry doors, and walkways. To access the second-level Serra Skyline Lounge in the Topfer Theatre, you many use the elevator located in the lobby. Assisted listening devices are available at the Box Office free of charge. For more information about any of these services, please contact the Box Office at 512-476-0541.
Drinks and Dining ZACH’s bars and lounges open 90 minutes prior to show time. The Topfer lounge remains open post-show for an opportunity to meet and mingle with the cast. Preorder your drinks at the bar, and they will be waiting for you at intermission and postshow. Our bars accept all major credit cards, and you may run a tab during your visit. ZACH’s lounges and bars offer a selection of wines, cocktails, and craft beers. Our Kleberg and Topfer bars offer a wide range of liquor selections including our popular wells and single malt scotches. Gourmet appetizer plates and small bites are also available.
Transportation ZACH’s Box Office staff will happily assist you in arranging a taxi for post-show.
