Heisenberg Director's Notes

Harvey Guion and Liz Beckham. Photo: KirkTuck.com

I am very honored to be working on this beautiful play that weaves science, music, and human connection to explore the delicate dance of love and loss.

forces of nature who seem to have a profound effect on one another, constantly throwing each other off-balance. Georgie’s energy is in all places at once. Alex, on the surface, is in a fixed position, with a frenetic world living below. They are two beautifully flawed characters that greatly change and affect each other, trying to find harmony.

The title of the play is evoked from Werner Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle. The Uncertainty Principle states that it is impossible to measure both the speed and position of an object at the same time. Any attempt to measure precisely the velocity of a particle, such as an electron, will move it, so that a measurement of its position has no validity. The simple act of observation affects the particle being observed. In the play, the character Georgie nicely sums it up: “If you watch something closely enough you realize you have no possible way of telling where it’s going or how fast it’s getting there. If you pay attention to where it's going or how fast it's moving you stop watching it properly.”

It also helps to have two great actors who allow themselves to be affected by the other person on-stage. The playwright has specifically asked the design to be stripped down to just a table and chairs so we are left with only the raw performances of these actors. As Alex says to Georgie in the play, "Music doesn't exist in the notes. It exists in the space between the notes." It was joy to work with these two brilliant actors who master both the playwright’s words and the space in between the written lines. Like two electrons dancing, Lizzie and Harvey create energy and electricity. I hope that you enjoy the nuance and unpredictability of Heisenberg as much as we enjoyed exploring it.

Heisenberg’s physics theory becomes a fitting metaphor of the unpredictability of human relationships. Often, the closer we get to each other, the less we know. The more we try to predict our lives and the people in it, the more we will be surprised. When we truly try to get to know somebody, the act alone of intimacy changes the relationship and the people involved. In the play, the two characters are

ZACH Leadership

DAVE STEAKLEY (Producing Artistic Director) is now in his 27th season, and is dedicated to creating a theatre of, by and for Austin – a place where our entire community gathers to share an intimate and extraordinary theatre experience. Led by Dave’s vision, the creation of the Topfer Theatre came to fruition, opening in October 2012 with the acclaimed musical Ragtime. Anna Deavere Smith says, “Dave is the future. The YES in his theater’s walls is as palpable as the walls themselves. That YES, I believe, will lead to something brand new, to connect with a broader, more global audience.” With Dave as artistic leader, ZACH has produced multiple World Premieres by Anna Deavere Smith, Steven Dietz, Jaston Williams, Everett Quinton, John Walch, Allen Robertson and The Flaming Idiots. ZACH served as the Central Texas hub of the nationwide 365 Plays/365 Days Festival by Suzan-Lori Parks. Dave created the first bilingual adaptation of Webber and Rice’s musical Jesucristo Superstar, and set The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in Katrinaravaged New Orleans with a jazz/R&B reinvention, which received national acclaim from The New York Times and about which Todd Gershwin says, “It was Dave’s creative production of Porgy and Bess that really opened my eyes to the need to finally allow a creative team to interpret the opera in a fresh manner, which led to the recent Broadway production.” Dave has directed many ZACH productions, and some favorite experiences include: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, The Great Society, Disney's Mary Poppins, Tribes, Mothers and Sons, All the Way, A Christmas Carol: A Rockin’ New Musical, The Who’s Tommy; The Gospel at Colonus; Harvey; 33 Variations; Ragtime; Next to Normal; Hairspray; August: Osage County; RENT; Metamorphoses; Our Town; Caroline, or Change; The Clean House; Take Me Out; I Am My Own Wife; Urinetown; Crowns; Omnium-Gatherum; Hedwig; Jelly’s Last Jam; The America Play; Dreamgirls; Angels in America and the first professional repertory production of The Laramie Project, and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. His regional directing credits include Actors Theatre of Louisville, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, New Stage Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, WaterTower Theatre, and Pittsburgh’s City Theatre. He is the playwright of ZACH’s A Christmas Carol, Rockin’ Christmas Party, and Keepin’ It Weird, featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, and American Theatre. Dave serves as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, and the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. City of Austin Mayors Kirk Watson and Lee Leffingwell declared, respectively, May 18, 2001 and October 22, 2011 as “Dave Steakley Day” on the occasion of his 10th and 20th ZACH Anniversaries. He is the recipient of the 2015 First Tee of Greater Austin Courtesy Award, the 2013 Human Rights Campaign Austin Visibility Award, 2010 Kick Ass Award, 2005 Austin Circle of Theaters’ “Outstanding Contribution to Austin Theatre” Award, seven Austin Chronicle “Best of Austin Best Stage Director” awards, the 2000 Austin Under 40 Outstanding Arts and Entertainment Award, and multiple Austin Critics’ Table and B. Iden Payne Awards for “Outstanding Director/Choreographer.” In 2009, he was crowned Austin Dancing with the Stars Champion, and he has a cameo in Richard Linklater’s 2012 film Bernie with Jack Black. 48

ZACH Leadership

Photo: KirkTuck.com

ELISBETH CHALLENER (Managing Director) is celebrating her 10th year at ZACH Theatre as Managing Director, with responsibility for strategic planning, management, finances, marketing, and fundraising for the organization. Under Elisbeth’s leadership, ZACH successfully designed, built, and opened the new Topfer Theatre, which has won significant awards and widespread acclaim completing the largest capital campaign in ZACH’s history. In August 2014, ZACH celebrated the successful conclusion of the $23.5M campaign. Other accomplishments during her ten years at ZACH include the creation of a new multi-year strategic plan that is moving the organization into the next phase of its significant expansion, increasing revenue from single ticket sales by 157 percent and grown revenue from season ticket sales by 139 percent. At a time when many arts organizations in Austin and around the nation have been struggling, ZACH has grown its operating budget from $3 million to more than $9 million dollars and has operated “in the black” throughout Elisbeth’s tenure! Elisbeth has led her team in developing innovative new offerings on ZACH’s expanded campus including full-service bars and nightly pre-show entertainment; an exclusive skyline lounge in the Topfer Theatre for donors; and making the theatre available as a red-carpet venue for SXSW, The Daily Show, as well as other major community events. Several years ago, ZACH proudly launched The Dave Steakley Dream Fund designed to enhance the artistic vision of ZACH’s Producing Artistic Director and to maintain production quality and the facility needs of ZACH’s Topfer Theatre and campus. Before moving to Austin, Elisbeth was Executive Director of Montalvo Arts Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. She led Montalvo’s growth from a small, communitybased organization into a major presenting venue and home to an internationally acclaimed Artists’ Residency Program. During nearly two decades at Montalvo, her other accomplishments included increasing ticket sales from less than $500,000 to more than $4 million, expanding the patron base from 6,000 to 80,000 and raising more than $20 million for capital projects. Earlier in her career, Elisbeth served as Administrative Director for the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Education/Outreach Director of the Fairmount Theatre of the Deaf and as department chair and faculty member of the performing arts department of The Purnell School in New Jersey. Elisbeth graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in Drama and Musical Theatre. She attended the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program, The Center for Excellence in Nonprofit Management Leaders Institute in San Jose, California and served in leadership roles for the American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley, Saratoga Rotary Club, and the Arts Council of Silicon Valley. She has been honored by San Jose Magazine, the Austin Business Journal, and the State of California for her work in the arts. Elisbeth currently serves on the Board of Directors and is President Elect of the National Alliance of Musical Theatre in New York, and has served on NAMT’s Festival of New Musicals Committee and Executive Committee. She has been a panelist for The Houston Arts Alliance, City of Austin, National Alliance of Musical Theatre, National Fund for New Musicals, and Theatre Communications Group. Elisbeth has always had a passion for the theatre and performed for many years in summer stock, dinner theatre, and semi-professional productions on the East Coast and in California. 49

January 23–February 3, 2019 The Topfer

Book by Ché Walker Music and lyrics by Anoushka Lucas and Omar Lyefook

Book by James Cameron Mitchell Music and lyrics by Steven Trask Directed by Dave Steakley

Tender, funny, and incredibly moving, this contemporary new love story will grab you from the inside out. Klook and Vinette are two lost souls trying to find themselves in one another. Against all odds and with the past at their heels, together they make a tentative stab at happiness. Staged in the intimate Kleberg at ZACH Theatre, this is a seductive premiere musical about inevitability and the thrill of falling in love. Infused with lyrical prose, Jazz, Blues, and Soul, The Ballad of Klook and Vinette is a mesmerizing theatrical experience you won’t want to miss.

Lift up your hands for the most groundbreaking, heart-stomping, gutbusting character ever to grace the stage! Created by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is “the most exciting rock score written for the theatre since, oh, ever” says Time Magazine. Winner of two Obie Awards and four Tony Awards®, Hedwig tells the story of “internationally ignored song stylist” Hedwig Schmidt, a fourth-wall-smashing East German rock ‘n’ roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a botched sex-change operation, trying to find a place to belong in America. Join the outrageous and unexpectedly hilarious Hedwig as she shares her story backed by her rock-band “The Angry Inch” for an immersive rock gig, stand-up comedy event that will ultimately inspire anyone who has felt life has given them an inch when they deserve a mile.

Join us for the 2018-2019 season The season marks new beginnings and continued traditions at Austin Opera.

Verdi's Otello Puts & Campbell's Silent Night Puccini's La bohème 82

512-472-5992 AUSTINOPERA.ORG THE LONG CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS Saturday Nov. 10, 2018 7:30 PM Thursday Nov. 15, 2018 7:30 PM Sunday Nov. 18, 2018 2:30 PM

As a crackling storm rolls into Cyprus, we are introduced to a trio of figures, each based on Shakespeare’s iconic characters: the victorious naval warrior Otello, his faithful wife Desdemona, and his trusted officer Iago. But soon after the rain subsides, the duplicitous Iago preys upon Otello’s insecurity and suspicion by hatching a plot to have Otello question Desdemona’s fidelity, unleashing a passionate tempest of gale force, with powerfully tragic results. This thoughtful tale of personal and political jealousy is a rarely performed masterwork that will leave Austin audiences breathless.

THE LONG CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

This company premiere of the Pulitzer Prize–winning modern classic Silent Night, with music by Kevin Puts and a libretto by Mark Campbell (The Manchurian Candidate, 2016), is based on the 2005 film Joyeux Noël, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Saturday Jan. 26, 2019 7:30 PM Thursday Jan. 31, 2019 7:30 PM Sunday Feb. 3, 2019 2:30 PM

Silent Night recounts a miraculous moment of peace during one of the bloodiest wars in human history. The year is 1914 and as Christmas Eve falls, soldiers in French, German, and Scottish trenches begin recalling songs of home, stepping into no-man’s-land for a spontaneous truce.

THE LONG CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

Puccini’s sweeping story of young bohemians struggling to fulfill their dreams and find true love contains some of the most beloved music in all of opera. La bohème is frequently referenced in popular culture—from the Academy Award– winning film Moonstruck to the Tony–winning musical Rent— making the story and its music instantly recognizable to even newcomers to opera.

Saturday April 27, 2019 7:30 PM Thursday May 2, 2019 7:30 PM Sunday May 5, 2019 2:30 PM

Austin Opera audiences will soon discover why the Pulitzer committee hailed Silent Night for “displaying versatility of style and cutting straight to the heart.”

This exquisite production is a traditional telling of the classic tale. The City of Light’s snowy streets, drafty tenements, and nightclub diversions come to life in a production certain to linger in the memory long after its final heartrending scene. 83

Opera ATX, powered by Austin Opera, will bring groundbreaking new works, emerging artists, exciting composers, and dynamic directors to Austin. By tapping into our city’s live music DNA, Austin Opera will continue to reflect the spirit of the city and the pioneering image it’s known for. Opera ATX will explore alternative venues and partnerships around town, starting at the historic Paramount Theatre. We will create the conditions for operatic experiences completely new to Austin, and perhaps completely new to the art form. Driven by Austin Opera’s love of opera, love of audiences, and love of Austin, Opera ATX shows how Austin is shaping its opera company and inspiring innovative experiences.

David T. Little's Soldier Songs PARAMOUNT THEATRE

Friday Saturday Apr. 5, 2019 8:00 PM Apr. 6, 2019 8:00 PM Soldier Songs combines elements of theater, opera, rock-infused concert music, and video by filmmaker Bill Morrison to explore themes of loss, the exploitation of innocence, and the difficulty of expressing the truth of war. The libretto, created by the composer, was adapted from recorded interviews with veterans of five wars. Soldier Songs traces changing perceptions of war in our society and by those who experience it. It is a chilling and realistic view of our media-crazed, war-machine culture, and of the nature of power in war.

A NEW INITIATIVE POWERED BY AUSTIN OPERA

84

With its poignant libretto, driving music, and surprising visual counterpoint, Soldier Songs perfectly represents the promise of Opera ATX: bringing innovative new works, sensational artists, and visionary creative teams to Austin.

A World Apart, A Moment Together One World & TRIAD funds of the San Antonio Area Foundation Connecting Central Texas Military Families One World’s innovative performing arts summer camp program provided scholarships through TRIAD funds of the San Antonio Area Foundation to give kids the opportunity to be a part of the musical production of “Wizard of Oz.” When the campers took the stage every parent, no matter where they were located, including Iraq was able to see their child perform. Using amazing video technology generously provided by a partnership with LifeSize Communications, seven military bases were connected to One World Theatre, so that parent and child could see, talk and interact with each other as if they were in the same room. After the performance, each child and their family was given the opportunity to talk privately with their loved one, keeping the bond of family alive across the miles.
