Publisher’s Note

There’s a new book making the rounds in the publishing world, The Revenge of Analog: Real Things and Why They Matter. In this meticulously researched and well-written book, journalist David Sax reports that several technologies believed to have been left by the roadside during the digital revolution are, in fact, alive, well, and flourishing. These include vinyl LPs, printed paper, board games (!), film, old-fashioned teaching (as opposed to computer-based learning), and corner bookstores. The reasons are myriad, but the realities undeniable: vinyl, to cite one example, is the fastest-growing segment of the music business, turntable sales are booming, and record stores are opening in (sorry) record numbers. Musicians like making LPs because they get paid royalties they never see from streaming services, and a significant percentage of listeners agree that vinyl just sounds better. Similarly, the Moleskine and other notebooks are simply a better and more satisfying way to take notes, and write down names and ideas than a Palm Pilot (remember that?), and film gives better results than most digital cameras or the ubiquitous camera phone. Tellingly, the most successful recent film product, Lomography, does not even offer the crispest or most saturated images—its appeal seems to come from the experience of film and the inexpensive Soviet-era plastic cameras. Indeed, a more authentic and emotional experience apprears to be the common theme behind the resurgence of all these “obsolete” technologies and formats that Sax catalogs. We like paper, albums, books, and well-curated bookstores because we connect with and understand them, and for the jumping-off points they offer for our creativity and imagination. It’s hard to deny that parts of The Revenge of Analog read like a sermon written for the choir, but there’s a healthy dose of vindication for publishers and others in the book and stationery business, whose demise at the hands of the week’s latest digital device has been predicted for decades. The Revenge of Analog is no surprise to us at Princeton Architectural Press, where we’ve been making “real things” brimming with authentic and emotional connections for more than thirty-five years, with deeply satisfying results, I believe, for us, and for you, our fellow readers. You’ll find many new experiences to stimulate your creativity and imagination in this, our latest catalog, brought to you in glorious living color on that thousands-year-old technology, paper. Please enjoy.

Our culture is addicted to weather: hourly forecasts, apps, satellite radio, TV channels, alerts, warnings, and watches. And understandably—our food, clothing, livelihoods, and, increasingly, safety are tied directly to the weather and climate change. In The Big Cloud, photographer Camille Seaman stands in front of tornados, at the edges of lightning storms, and in pelting hail under pitch-black skies to capture supercells and mammatus clouds in their often sublime and sometimes terrifying splendor. In these awe-inspiring photographs, Seaman’s work is a potent reminder that there is no art more dramatic, in scale or emotion, than that created by nature. The Big Cloud includes an introduction by award-winning New Yorker science writer and author Alan Burdick (Out of Eden, Why Time Flies). Camille Seaman is a TED Senior Fellow whose TED Talk on her photographs of supercell storms has garnered more than 1,600,000 views. Her previous book is Melting Away: A Ten-Year Journey through Our Endangered Polar Regions. She has received a National Geographic Award, and her photographs appear in publications including Time, the New York Times, and Men’s Journal.

A century’s worth of pictures of anglers (and their fish) in all shapes and sizes, from the Queen Mother to Johnny Cash

People Fishing A Century of Photographs Barbara Levine and Paige Ramey V i s ua l & p op u l a r C u lt u r e — April 2018 5 x 7.5 in / 12.7 x 19 cm 144 pp / 115 color & b+w Hardcover 978-1-61689-654-6 $16.95 / £12.99 R i g h ts: Wo rld 51695 9 781616 896546

Although people have fished for food since the dawn of time, fishing today is one of the most popular pastimes in the world—an estimated 220 million people worldwide are recreational anglers, according to the World Bank. While many enjoy the Zen of waiting patiently for a strike in the great outdoors, for others, at least judging from this quirky collection, fishing is clearly a time of great fun, even hilarity. In this follow-up to the delightful People Knitting, photo archivists and collectors Barbara Levine and Paige Ramey netted these curious, humorous, and sometimes outrageous photos of Edwardian dowagers, tiny babies, sunburned sportsmen, and bathing beauties preparing tackle boxes, casting lures, and displaying the catch of the day. A tribute to this perennial outdoor pastime, People Fishing is the perfect gift for the angler in your life. Barbara Levine and Paige Ramey are the owners of projectB, a gallery and curatorial service specializing in vernacular photography. Levine is the author of People Knitting. She lives in Houston, Texas, and San Miguel, Mexico.

A visual encyclopedia of unusual typefaces and symbols

A 2Z+ Alphabets & Signs Edited by Julian Rothenstein, with texts by Mel Gooding De s ign & V i s ua l c u lt u r e — April 2018 11.75 x 8.25 in / 29.8 x 21 cm 320 pp / 260 color & 60 b+w Paperback 978-1-61689-707-9 $40.00 R i g h ts: No rt h Ame ric a 54000 9 781616 897079

Now in its fourth iteration, revised and dramatically expanded with over 100 new pages, Julian Rothenstein’s classic compendium, A2Z+ remains the ultimate source for unusual, inventive fonts not found anywhere else: the “Tippler” alphabet, created from an elegant, drunk man’s meanderings, one based on ink spots, and another derived from an avant-garde Czech ballet. Eye-test charts assert their modernist merit, and a Russian graphic simplifies the connection between agriculture and industry in elegant Constructivist type. Culled from books, advertisements, packaging, posters, and technical manuals from around the world, this off-beat collection is the perfect inspiration for designers, history buffs, and anyone else interested in remarkable typefaces, symbols, and patterns. Julian Rothenstein is the publisher of Redstone Press, an editor, and designer. His prior books include Psychobook and The Blind Photographer. He lives in London, England. Art critic, writer, and curator Mel Gooding lives in London.

“There’s something poignant about designing a mass-produced object heading directly for the trash can. Like most quotidian artifacts of our era, the disposable coffee cup lid fulfills its purpose when it’s forgettable but effective. And as we discover in this short, deft, caffeinated volume, the quest for perfection—for spillproof sublimity—is far from over.”

PUNCTURE

If you’re one of the billions of people worldwide who begin the day with a cup of take-out coffee, you may have marveled at the ubiquitous plastic coffee cup lid. With its clever combination of indentations, protrusions, tabs, and score lines that can be peeled, pinched, and punctured to create an opening for sipping, this design artifact allows coffee drinkers to take their beverage on the road while guarding them from the hazards of cascading, piping-hot liquid. Louise Harpman and Scott Specht have collected these humble triumphs of industrial design, in their many variations, for decades, creating the world’s largest collection of coffee cup lids. In addition to life-size specimen photographs, Coffee Lids includes essays charting the history, development, and categorization of the coffee lid; a field guide to lid features; and numerous original patent drawings. This quirky design exploration will delight anyone who takes note of the small bits of genius that surround us every day. You’ll never look at your drinkthrough, disposable hot-beverage lid the same way again.

If you’re one of the one billion people worldwide who drink coffee every day, you may have marveled at the ubiquitous plastic coffee cup lid, with its clever combination of indentations, protrusions, tabs, and score lines that can be pinched, pulled, pushed, punctured, and tucked to create an opening to sip from while also keeping a piping-hot liquid in its place. Louise Harpman and Scott Specht have collected these familiar triumphs of industrial design, in their many variations, for decades, creating what Smithsonian magazine calls the world’s largest collection of coffee cup lids. In addition to oddly compelling close-up photographs, Harpman and Specht include a lively field guide to their classification system and patent drawings for many of the most unique lids. This beautiful book appeals to designers, coffee drinkers, and anyone who delights in the small bits of humble genius that surround us every day. You’ll never look at your to-go coffee cup the same way again. Louise Harpman practices architecture in New York City and Scott Specht in New York City and Austin, Texas. One man’s 40-year project to draw every detail of the New York City subway

One-Track Mind Drawing the New York Subway Drawings by Philip Ashforth Coppola Edited by Ezra Bookstein and Jeremy Workman Foreword by Jonathan Lethem V i s ua l & p op u l a r C u lt u r e — May 2018 8 x 6 in / 20.3 x 15.2 cm 160 pp / 130 b+w Hardcover 978-1-61689-674-4 $24.95 / £18.99 R i g h ts: Wo rld 52495

For decades, Philip Ashforth Coppola has meticulously documented the New York City subway in a series of extraordinary drawings, detailing the typography, terracotta mosaics, faience, and tile patterns that millions of riders pass by every day. Coppola’s drawings are what Hyperallergic calls “the most encyclopedic history of the art and architecture of the New York City subway system.” Along with Coppola’s intricate ink drawings are anecdotes he assembled through painstaking research involving hundreds of hours poring through microfilms to discover the names behind the artisanship of what is rightly called New York’s largest public art work—its legendary subway system.

Explore the houses thirty of the world’s most creative architects designed for themselves

Architects’ Houses Michael Webb a rc h i t ec t u r e & i n t er ior de sign — April 2018 9 x 11.5 in / 22.8 x 29.2 cm 304 pp / 400 color Hardcover 978-1-61689-702-4 $50.00 R i g h ts: No rt h Ame ric a 55000 9 781616 897024

Thirty of the world’s most talented architects, including Norman Foster, Thom Mayne, Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, talk about the houses they designed for themselves over the past decade in Architects’ Houses. What inspired them, what were the constraints, how did their concepts take shape? Michael Webb explores the creative process and traces the influence of architects’ houses over the past two hundred years, from Jefferson’s Monticello to the creations of Charles and Ray Eames, Toyo Ito, and Frank Gehry. Texts, sketches, and plans illustrate houses that differ widely, in size, material, character, and location. Spacious or frugal, ambitious or modest, refined or rough-edged, daring or reductive, these adventurous dwellings make a statement. This generously illustrated book brims with ideas and inspiration as these architects’ houses show different answers to the question: how can a house enrich lives and its natural surroundings? Michael Webb, Hon. AIA/LA, writes on architecture and design. Born and educated in England, he now lives in Los Angeles. He has authored more than twenty books, and contributes regularly to leading journals in the United States and Europe.

Make professionalquality screen prints, even as a beginner

Screenprinting The Ultimate Studio Guide From Sketchbook to Squeegee Print Club London arts & cr afts — February 2018 8.25 x 11.375 in / 21 x 29 cm 288 pp / 400 color Paperback with flaps 978-1-61689-655-3 $40.00 R i g h ts: No rt h Ame ric a 54000 9 781616 896553

Although the technique of screenprinting dates back to first-century China, it became the preferred printing method of choice for musical and political counterculture movements of the 1960s, thanks to its ease, cost, and flexibility. It moved into the mainstream with Andy Warhol’s iconic screen print of Marilyn Monroe, and was quickly adopted by artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Rauschenberg. Screenprinting has become even more widespread with the many demonstrations, marches, and grassroots protests in the wake of the American presidential election of 2016. Screenprinting: The Ultimate Studio Guide From Sketchbook to Squeegee is a definitive, fully illustrated manual on the techniques, materials, and processes of screenprinting. An essential and highly practical reference, this book is equally suited for beginning and experienced printers, with step-by-step tutorials on basic and advanced techniques, as well as “workshops” by several of the world’s best-known screenprinters, including Ben Eine and Bob Gill. Print Club London is a leading print studio specializing in the art, practice, teaching, and exhibition of screenprinting. Established in 2007, and now with over 500 members, Print Club, in addition to providing studio space and selling design pieces, works with clients on projects ranging from bespoke bags for Stella McCartney to live printing projects in stores with Nike.

Although 3D printing promises a revolution in many industries, primarily industrial manufacturing, nowhere are the possibilities greater than in the field of product design and modular architecture. Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello, of the cutting-edge San Francisco Bay Area-based design firm Emerging Objects, have developed remarkable techniques for “printing” from a wide variety of powders, including sawdust, clay, cement, rubber, concrete, salt, and even coffee grounds, opening an entire realm of material, phenomenological, and ecological possibilities to designers. In addition to case studies and illustrations of their own work, Rael and San Fratello offer guidance for sourcing alternative materials, specific recipes for mixing compounds, and step-by-step instructions for conducting bench tests and setting parameters for material testing, to help readers understand the process of developing powder-based materials and their unique qualities. Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello are professors at University of California, Berkeley, and San Jose State University, respectively. Their firm, Emerging Objects, has been instrumental in developing new materials for powder-based 3D printing. Rael is the author of Earth Architecture and Borderwall as Architecture.

A new addition to our awardwinning Classics of Architecture series

THE COMPLETE WO® KS OF PE®CIER AND FONTAINE

The Complete Works of Percier and Fontaine Charles Percier and Pierre François Léonard Fontaine Introduction by Barry Bergdoll a rc h i t ec t u r e — May 2018 9 x 12 in / 17.8 x 21.6 cm 384 pp / 289 b+w & color Hardcover 978-1-61689-698-0 $100.00 / £75.00 R i g h ts: Wo rld 10000 9 781616 896980

Known as “Napoleon’s architects,” Charles Percier and Pierre Fontaine were not only the Emperor’s official government architects, but two of the most celebrated teachers at the legendary Ecole des Beaux-Arts, responsible for developing the highly influential neoclassical Empire, or Directoire, style of design. In addition to their renovations to the Louvre and the Tuileries, and construction of the Arc de Tromphe de Carrousel, they are best known for Empress Josephine’s house at Malmaison, where they effectively invented the profession of interior design by crafting every detail, including all the furnishings. Condensing four volumes into one, this book collects the entire printed output of these two important architects and archeologists of Roman architecture, and serves as the definitive edition on their work. The Complete Works of Percier and Fontaine is introduced by critic and historian Barry Bergdoll, and published in association with the Institute for Classical Art and Architecture. Charles Percier (1764–1838) and Pierre François Léonard Fontaine (1762–1853) were a highly influential pair of French architects and interior designers, credited with developing the neoclassical Empire style of design during the Napoleonic era. Barry Bergdoll is Meyer Schapiro Professor of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University. He served as Philip Johnson Chief Curator at the Museum of Modern Art from 2007 to 2013. He has published widely on modern architectural history and art history.

This newest addition to the Pamphlet Architecture series, long admired for its willingness to propose architectural solutions to challenging problems, addresses the issue of rising sea levels with an interrogation of the concept of floating cities, a field of inquiry gaining increasing relevance and urgency with the impending reality of climate change. The authors explore notions of buoyancy and the amphibious through a typology based on human response and adaptation to one of the most pressing issues of our day.

A counting book from 1 to 25

When I Am Big Maria Dek Age s 4 a n d u p — April 2018 8 x 10 in / 20 x 25.4 cm 48 pp Hardcover 978-1-61689-602-7 $17.95 / £12.99 R i g h ts: Wo rld En g lis h 51795 9 781616 896027

A Walk in the Forest introduced the enormously talented Maria Dek, and When I Am Big is a beguiling follow up to her first success. Charming illustrations and text encourage young children to explore what they can do as they grow up. The adventurous child imagines “I will tie my shoes all by myself, make 3 knots with big bows”; eat 20 pizzas in one sitting, or walk animals, 8 at a time, while teaching them tricks. When I Am Big is also an unconventional counting book, as it goes all the way to twenty-five. The result is a book that nourishes a child’s curiosity, confidence, and delight in the world’s wonders. Based in Poland, Maria Dek holds an art degree from both the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and University of the Arts, London. She has written and illustrated three children’s books, including A Walk in the Forest.

Things are rarely as they first seem, particularly when looked at from a different angle, or in a different context. From Morning to Night asks children to look at familiar and simple shapes and notice how they change, one minute a mushroom, the next a cereal bowl. A planet becomes an orange; a traffic cone turned on its side, a wind sock. The result is an unusually handsome and clever book that reminds children and parents to look at things carefully and never to judge something (or someone) by its first appearance—wait a moment, look harder, or turn your head, and it might be something completely different and unexpected. Flavia Ruotolo is a designer based in Genoa, Italy. In her studio, Le Macchinine, she creates objects and images for children.

When Pop Art burst on the art scene in the 1950s as a reaction against abstract expressionism, it found instant favor with its colorful use of images from advertising, signs, soup cans, Coke bottles, and even comic strips. This playfulness is front and center in Draw Like an Artist: Pop Art, a collection of eighteen fun and colorful activities for aspiring Warhols, Hockneys, and Lichtensteins, or anyone who enjoys working with color, pattern, and pop-culture imagery, to gain a better understanding of the twentieth century’s most popular art movement. Perforated pages, providing plenty of inspiration and raw material for collage and drawing backgrounds, conclude the workbook.

I haven’t told my garden yet— Lest that should conquer me. I haven’t quite the strength now To break it to the Bee— I will not name it in the street For shops would stare at me— That one so shy—so ignorant Should have the face to die. The hillsides must not know it— Where I have rambled so— Nor tell the loving forests The day that I shall go— Nor lisp it at the table— Nor heedless by the way Hint that within the Riddle One will walk today—

Happiness... not in another place, but this place, not for another hour, but this hour

This is what you shall do; Love the earth and sun and the animals,

Each of us inevitable, Each of us limitless

despise riches, give alms to everyone that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God. .. dismiss whatever insults your own soul; and your very flesh shall be a great poem....

Redstone Diary 2019: Home For those fortunate enough, home evokes a sense of solace, belonging, and warmth. For others, home is a place of confinement, unpredictability, or even fear. Many cling to routines that revolve around their physical dwellings. They create private lives at home that sustain their public beings. Attitudes toward home are constantly in flux, and rarely ambivalent. Routine is arguably a facet of home-building, and daily reflection with Redstone’s Home diary provides just that. Artists and writers at home include Ed Ruscha, Paul CÊzanne, Marjolaine Ryley, Carl Sandburg, Tiffany Watt Smith, and Steve Martin. As the first comprehensive encyclopedic survey of Western architectural theory from Vitruvius to the present, this book is an essential resource for architects, students, teachers, historians, and theorists. Using only original sources, Hanno-Walter Kruft has undertaken the monumental task of researching, organizing, and analyzing the significant statements put forth by architectural theorists over the last two thousand years. The result is a text that is authoritative and complete, easy to read without being reductive. “I am as astonished to find this book written, so great was the scholarship and labor involved, as I am to find it previously unwritten, so great is the need for it. Its scale and scope is unique.” —Philip Tabor, Architectural Review “A remarkably accessible description of the succeeding intellectual visions that have governed architecture through the ages.” —Thomas D. Sullivan, Washington Times “[T]his is probably the best single-volume summary of architectural theory available to students.” —Newsletter of the Institute for Urban Design “[Kruft] presents lucid descriptions of theories from those of Vitruvius and Alberti to those of Venturi and Alexander, along with guides to primary sources and with more than a little information about the practice that followed the theory. A wonderful resource.” —Interior Design

A History of Architectural Theory from Vitruvius to the Present Hanno-Walter Kruft

“This book will probably long remain the history of architectural theory. Its well documented contents offer the student and researcher an essential reference tool.” —Neue Zürcher Zeitung $45.00 ISBN 1-56898-010-8

Thomas J.

“Thomas J. Campanella’s The Concrete Dragon is a fascinating and timely book that sets the scene for any further discussion of China’s explosive urban growth across the last twenty years. The complete evisceration of immense areas of urban housing and farmland is discussed in rich and chilling detail; as are the tower blocks, giant malls, highway systems, McMansions, theme parks, and pastiches of virtually every known global architectural style that have taken their place. Furthermore, by regularly reminding us of the excesses of American ‘urban renewal’ in the 1950s and 1960s, Campanella succeeds in making this a comparative study, not just a nostalgic diatribe.” —Jonathan D. Spence, author of The Search for Modern China

Campanella

“This is an extraordinary book about an extraordinary, even bizarre, subject: the superheated hyperurbanization of China, which can fairly be called the most amazing phenomenon of the early twenty-first-century world. Anyone interested in contemporary cities, anyone interested in contemporary China, has to read it.” —Sir Peter Hall, University College London

“News reports on urbanization in China tend to be fragmented and sensational. Few get into the cultural and historic perspectives of this incredible development in human history. The Concrete Dragon covers a wide range of urban phenomena, from open door and economic reform to rapid growth, from the Beijing Olympics to preservation challenges, from megamalls to superhighways, from pollution to growing social disparity.” —Weiming Lu, planning advisor to the mayor of Beijing

“Everyone knows China is urbanizing rapidly and expansively. In this upbeat, entertaining, and insightful account, replete with historical references, Thomas J. Campanella— an experienced China observer—shows how this is happening, in important episodes, and what’s being produced. A fascinating read.” —Peter G. Rowe, Harvard University

china’s urban revolution Thomas J. Campanella is associate professor of urban planning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a visiting professor at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. He taught previously at MIT, Nanjing University in China, and was a Fulbright fellow at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His previous books include Cities From the Sky (2001) and Republic of Shade (2003).

TATARELLA

The labyrinth is one of the world’s oldest symbols, its meaning often shrouded in myth and mystery or tied to religious rites. Today, this enigmatic form inspires artists to create their own innovative interpretations from such varied materials as ice, snow, salt, wood, stone, glass, cement, and metal. This new collection features both classical examples and the best contemporary projects, showcasing work by artists, landscape artists, and architects from around the world. The diverse and stunning examples include pavement labyrinths of thirteenth-century French cathedrals, a historic English turf maze, Renaissance hedge mazes, and numerous present-day projects by artists and architects including BIG | Bjarke Ingels Group, Chris Drury, Richard Fleischner, Dan Graham, Robert Irwin, Arata Isozaki, Robert Morris, Yoko Ono, and Billie Tsien and Tod Williams, among many others.
