CEO's Message
The Tourism Promotion Authority proudly brings you another exciting installment of Journeys, the official travel and tourism magazine about Papua New Guinea.
Our key stories in this issue pay tribute to the many natural wonders of our beautiful country that perfectly embodies a line from the classic hymn: “All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small.”
I ndeed, Papua New Guinea is home to an abundance of extraordinary ‘bright a nd beautiful’ flora a nd fauna that continue to be appreciated and discovered through travel and tourism. Ecotourism is a vital niche tourism product that supports the conservation and protection of our natural environment and the rich ecosystems they sustain, and the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority is proud to support the many nature-ba sed tourism activities implemented across the country.
I n this issue, we introduce you to some of our tourism industry members who have been at the forefront of ecotourism and environment conservation in PNG, particularly: Port Moresby Nature Park, PNG Divers Association, Walindi Plantation Resort and more. You will be amazed when you read about the Port Moresby Nature Park in this issue. They have done a tremendous amount of work n wildlife rehabilitation, as well as conservation awareness and ducation. There is no better place to truly discover and appreciate PNG’s most fascinating endemic species than at one of our nation’s biggest national attractions – often referred to as the POM Nature Park. Enjoy reading the many fun things you can do and learn at th is celebrated Park.
For those who love the ocean, I hope you like the stories from the PNG Divers Association and their members. Famous oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, once wrote, “The Sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever”.
I believe you will find this true, when you discover Papua New Guinea’s exquisite marine life. I commend the PNG Divers Association (PNGDA) for their commitment to the protection of our underwater world. If there is ever a time to discover PNG underwater, it is now, and I encourage you to do so with a member of our illustrious PNGDA, whom the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority is always proud to support.
Readers will also be intrigued by this issue’s Destination in Focus, the stunning Western Highlands Province – home of the famous Mount Hagen Cultural Show and the Kuk World Heritage Site. Take a look at our guide on the interesting things you can do while you’re in the famous town ‘among the clouds’ – Mount Hagen. Discover fascinating places to stay while in the province. We also introduce you to two of the biggest names in the Highlands tourism industry – the pioneer inbound tour operator Mr. Bob Bates, founder of Trans Niugini Tours, as well as, Mr. Pym Mam indi of Paiya Tours.
From our updates, you will find the team and I at the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority (PNGTPA) have made progress with Destination Marketing, Research and Promotions – particularly staff and tourism industry training in digital marketing and tourism data research. Enhancing our destination marketing through capacity building for our tourism industry remain our key goals under the Tourism Sector Development Plan (2022 – 2026).
I am also plea sed to announce the most exciting news update from the PNGTPA, that being the recent engagement of our new tourism brand ambassador. He is one of our nation’s biggest professional rugby league exports – Justin Olam, member of our Kumuls PNG National Rugby league team and the Australian National Rugby League team, Melbourne Storms.

Isi Henry Leonard is impressed about the initiatives taken by PNG Tourism and Promotion Authority (PNGTPA) to help promote Papua New Guinea as a tourist destination.
PNGTPA in a nut shell is pushing for sports tourism as one of its vehicles under the MICE segment of Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions. Minister Leonard, accompanied by his first secreta ry Elijah Tapie were able to witness and be part of the various meetings held by PNGTPA and several

We want to be innovative to see the growth of Tourism in PNG. Just by sitting through all these various meetings, I am encouraged and to be honest, I am happy to see how TPA is conducting its meetings. WORKSHOP PROMOTES USE OF DOMESTIC TOURISM DATA
Authority Host Workshops and Consultations for Domestic Tourism Data.
By Pauline RIman.ADomestic Tourism Data Methodologies and Stakeholder Consultation workshop was conducted in Port Moresby on the 1st and 2nd of June 2023, by the Pacific Private Sector Development Initiative (PSDI) and the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority (PNGTPA).
The work shop and consultations emphasised how domestic tourism can strengt hen Papua New Guinea’s overall tourism sector, and how domestic travel data capture is crucial to developing informed tourism policies and measuring sector performance.
Facilitators of the workshop and consultation meeting were representatives of the Pacific PSDI: Professor John Cheer of the Western Sydney University in Australia, and Associate Professor Anne Hardy. Both have a wealth of experience as research professionals who have worked with tourism agencies across the Asia-Pacific region.
The PNGTPA was the host agency of the meetings facilitated by the Pacific PSDI,
particularly officers of the Research and Statistics Unit under the Marketing Division.
“My team and I at the PNGTPA are seeking to develop a suitable and consistent methodology for measu ring domestic tourism in PNG. This workshop is an important step for us in fostering insight on how to source, gather and visualize data for developing domestic tourism policies and marketing initiatives. I wish to than k the Pacific PSDI, as well as Professor John Cheer and Professor Anne Hardy for their time and support,” said Noah Mi kmik, Research and Statistics Coordinator of the PNGTPA.
There were 30 participants at the workshop and consultations meeting – representing various tourism stakeholders in the country, including the National Statistics Office (NSO), National Research Institute (NRI), PNG Air, NCDC Tourism, the PNG Tourism Industry Associat ion and more.
The PNGTPA’s Visitor Arrivals Report for Papua New Guinea has been a key source of data feeding into regional
and internat ional travel data reports for almost two-decades. The PNGTPA’s collect ion of Incoming Passenger Arrival Cards from the Citizenship and Immigration Authority office at the Jackson’s International Airport has been a crucial component in collating visitor arrivals data for the country.
Since the global pandemic, the PNGTPA’s marketing activities has modified its focus from the international market towards the domestic tourism market. The biggest chal lenge in this area is data collection, which the PNGTPA are committed to managing.

Twelve Kokoda Track Authority (KTA) rangers underwent the Advanced Ranger Course, funded by the Kokoda Initiative program under the Papua New Guinea-Australia Partnership. This comprehensive training, conducted by INLOC, aimed to build their capacity and equip the rangers with essential skills necessary for effective management and preservation of the Kokoda Track.
As the 12 KTA rangers complete their Advanced Ranger Course, t hey emerge as leaders in sustainable trail management, equipped with enhanced skills and knowledge, t hey will continue to protect the Kokoda Track, ensuring its preservation for future generat ions to enjoy. This collaboration between the Kokoda Track Authority, IN LOC, and the Kokoda Initiative program exemplifies the power of partnerships in achieving sustainable conservation goals.
In recognising the importance of sustainable tourism practices and the vital role their rangers play, as the organisat ion's eyes and ears on the ground, KTA has invested in their training and development, to ensure that the Kokoda Track remains a pristine and culturally significant destinat ion. The Kokoda Track is one of Papua New Guinea's top tourist attractions.
The Advanced Ranger Course began in October 2022 and concluded in June 2023,
primarily in Efogi vil lage. Nestled in the Central Province, Efogi is home to a KTA ranger station and serves as a crucial hub along the Kokoda Trail. Accessible only by trekking, small planes, or helicopters, this remote locat ion provides an ideal setting for rangers to immerse themselves in the natural environment and gain firsthand experience in trail ma nagement.
The collaboration between the Kokoda Track Authority, IN LOC, and the Kokoda Initiative program exemplifies the power of partnerships in achieving sustainable conservation goals. By investing in local commun ities, empowering individuals, and fostering a sense of responsibility, we can create a brighter and more sustainable future for our natural treasures.
During the intensive training, rangers explored various aspects of conservation and sustainability. The rangers were also trained in Occupational Health and Safety, Governance Arrangements, Conflict Resolution, and the use of digital media for recording and observing native and threatened species, utilizing GPS technology. Armed with these skills, the rangers are better equipped to protect the fragile ecosystems and cultural heritage along the Kokoda Track.
KTA's decision to employ local rangers from the Kokoda area ensures a deep
connection to the commun ity and fosters strong relationships. And the inclusion of women as rangers within the KTA is another significant step towards gender balance and inclusivity. Their presence as role models sends a powerful message, encouraging future generations to strive for gender equality in all fields.
By involving local residents in the conservation efforts, the KTA is fostering a sense of ownership and pride in preserving the trail's natural beauty and historical significance. This strengt hens the bond between the KTA, the local population, and the PNG government.

Kokoda Track Opening Celebrates Kinship and Respect for Ancestors
South Sea Horizons, a leading tourism organization in Papua New Guinea, commends the aspiring tourism students of the University of Natural Resources and Environment (UNRE) at Vudal for their dedication to studying tourism and striving to learn better standards. Recognizing the untapped potential of tourism as a valuable resource in East New Britain, South Sea Horizons emphasizes the significance of responsible tourism practices to foster employment opportunities, stimulate economic growth, and preserve the natural and cultural heritage of the region.
Alan Manning, General Manager of South Sea Horizons Australasia, expressed his enthusiasm for the students' commitment to understanding the tourism industry and their determination to improve its standards. He said, "Tourism is an undervalued resource here in East New Britain that can play a vital role in employment and economic growth, particularly in the Gazelle District. It is truly encouraging to witness students choosing to study tourism, as t hey hold the key to comprehending the industry and enhancing its future."
Manning emphasized the exceptional opport un ity that lies ahead in creating a thriving tourism
industry within the Gazelle District. He acknowledged the crucial role of educated tourism operators and identified the students and the forthcoming output of the tourism course at UNRE as the next generation of tourism stakeholders. "To realize this vision, we must offer insights into all tourism practices, from mass tourism products like the PNO cruise to niche tourism such as caving. By providing comprehensive knowledge on industry best practices and effective strategies to mitigate economic and social risks, we equip these future tourism advocates to make informed decisions and contribute to the sustainable growth of the Gazelle District's tourism sector," explained Manning.
South Sea Horizons recogni zes the diverse range of tourism practices in the Gazelle District, including popular mass tourism attract ions and niche tourism activities. Understanding the intricacies and potential impacts of these practices is crucial for the aspiring tourism professionals. Through their collaboration with UNRE, South Sea Horizons aims to insti ll a deep understanding of responsible tourism practices, sustainable approaches, commun ity engagement, and cultural preservation in the students' educat ion.
"It is not only about promoting responsible tourism but also about highlighting the economic and social benefits that can be derived from sustainable practices. By engaging local commun ities and preserving our cultural heritage, we ensure that tourism brings positive outcomes for both visitors and residents," emphasized Manning.
South Sea Horizons is dedicated to integrating these essential elements into the curriculum at UNRE. By discussing with students about the knowledge and skills necessary to address the chal lenges and opport un ities within the tourism industry, South Sea Horizons aims to create a generation of tourism
professionals who are well-prepared to drive the growth of the Gazelle District's tourism sector while preserving its natural beauty and cultural authenticity.
Kokoda Track Opening Celebrates Kinship and Respect for Ancestors
The Kokoda Track opening holds a special place in the hearts of the people who walk it. For the people of the track, the mountains and gulleys of the Kokoda are where their souls reside, even if their final resting place is in the Bomana War cemetery. The military feats of the past are something that the people naturally warm to because of their Melanesian
One of PNG's prominent tour ism organizations, South Sea Horizons, promoting PNG tour ism through different efforts around the country.customs and beliefs of respect for their ancestors.
For Papua New Guinean Expeditions companies like South Sea Horizons, every successful Kokoda trek is a celebration of a long-lasting friendship. The mark of respect between those that fought in the war and the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, and those that come to walk the presentday Kokoda, perpetuates the kinship between our countries.
"W hen we walk the Kokoda with our friends, t hey come as strangers but we leave as brothers and sisters ," said Banabas Omi, a senior historian with South Sea Horizons. "W hen t hey walk with us, we share stories of their ancestors and ours and make sure that when t hey leave, we are doing their ancestors proud. They are in those hills watching us, wanting us to spread the stories t hey can no longer spread, and it is our custom to make sure we do them proud by sharing their story."
South Sea Horizons' General Manager, Alan Manning, said, "The Kokoda is a spiritual journey, not just for the Australians who come on a pilgrimage to pay homage to their ancestors, but also for our people. Honouring our ancestors is considered essential in PNG custom. That's why when you walk with a local operator, you will get that reciprocity of respect, love, and aut henticity. It adds a spiritual element to the Kokoda pilgrimage."
South Sea Horizons, together with local landowner groups, leads 100% PNG-led tours on the Kokoda and has been doing so for over 15 years. With experienced guides who have successfully delivered over 150 treks, Operat ions Manager Saii Faole has urged
anyone looking to walk the track to join them on a Kokoda journey soon.
"W hen you walk with us, you are walking with direct descendants of the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels. Come with us, and we will share the Kokoda together," said Faole.
In addition to being a spiritual journey and a celebrat ion of kinship, the presentday Kokoda Track also provides a great source of employment for many men and women. For those who are able and fit enough, there are employment opport un ities as porters, guides, and historians.
"Employment opport un ities are created with every trek," said South Sea Horizons' General Manager, Alan Manning. "At South Sea Horizons, our senior guides, senior historians, and cooks are paid five times the average PNG monthly wage for each eight day expedition. For every trekker South Sea Horizons hosts, we create two employment opport un ities, and that's something we are so proud of."
The present-day Kokoda also allows vil lagers who aren't part of the trekking expeditions to earn revenue. "As the groups progress along the Kokoda, small markets give vil lages the opport un ity to sell goods like fruit and veggies sourced from local gardens," said Manning. "Allowing more revenue for the track residents, vil lage fees, site fees, and even firewood for campsites are all sources of revenue for the Kokoda corridor residents."
The Kokoda Track opening is not only a celebration of the past but also a source of hope for the future. It provides employment opport un ities and revenue for the local commun ities, allowing
them to thrive and prosper. South Sea Horizons is proud to be a part of this journey and looks forward to continuing to support the local commun ities along the Kokoda Track.

DIVE INTO ANOTHER WORLD
By Maureen WeiPapua New Guinea’s warm tropical waters are part of an area in the world known as the “Coral Triangle”. The Coral Triangle is a marine region that spans across parts of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste, and Papua New Guinea. It has over 6,000 species of marine wildlife and contains 76% of the earth's coral species. It is also home to countless underwater caves and holds historical relics and war wreckages.
As part of the Coral Triangle, Papua New Guinea’s vast aquatic subterranean domain is deemed as
THE CORAL TRIANGLE
A 6 Million Square Kilometer Area, covering 6 different countries.
of the major tourist attractions in PNG for some time. Prior to the global COVID-19 pandemic, a large percentage of international tourists, visiting Papua New Guinea, traveled for the purpose of underwater diving in our oceans.
Many underwater divers, both local and international, fall in love with diving sites in Papua New Guinea as it provides an opportunity to explore a whole new world. Diving into the unknown wonders of the PNG sea is the equivalent of flying through the ocean. One can experience the ease of snorkeling through the sapphire sea like a fish and witness the underwater wonders first hand. It is an activity that brings you closer to nature, as you discover unique aquatic wildlife one normally sees only through a television. Diving in PNG’s seas can help you feel closer to nature and learn to value it more than before. You get to see the
beauty of an untouched underwater world, a fascinating experience which can change you forever.
There is no doubt that diving is a leisure and recreation activity that brings people from all over the world together, as they journey down to the depths of the ocean. It is not a sport with a competitive aspect, making it an activity for everyone to participate in and enjoy. Diving is for both men and women, young and old, and even for individuals with a disability. You don’t have to be an athlete to go underwater diving, making it the perfect activity to do with family and friends.
If you wish to go scuba diving, free diving, or to just immerse yourself in an underwater experience, check out PNG Pro Dive, the oldest diving operator in Papua New Guinea.
OF THE WORLD’S CORAL REEF SPECIES Are FOUND IN THE CORAL TRIANGLE
Papua New Guinea Pro Dive, formerly known as the “Dive Centre,” is one of the oldest and most prominent dive operators in Papua New Guinea. They have been organizing underwater diving excursions, for both certified and beginner divers, and providing quality rental diving equipment since 1995. Prior to the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in a lockdown on international travel, PNG Pro Dive received a steady influx of visitors coming to Papua New Guinea for an underwater diving experience. The organization reach their own record height, in 2009, when Papua New Guinea had flights travell ing direct from Japan into Port Moresby.
The PNG Pro Dive workshop is located on the dirt road towards Loloata Island at the Tahira Marina in Port Moresby, Central Province. From there, divers board on boats and sail into the open sea to the actual diving locations near Bootless Bay.
PNG Pro Dive has experienced staff that can put even the most nervous first timer at ease. PNG Pro Dive has three certified diving instructors led by John
Miller. Each instructor is affiliated with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), and t hey are certified to train and guide beginners and experienced divers into the underwater world. Course offered for diver training, range from novice through to professional. Individuals can experience the Discover Scuba Course which allows you to see if diving is for you. Or, you can take the Beginner (Open Water Scuba Diver) all the way through to the Professional Instructor rating. For one to begin exploring the vast underworld, all t hey need is the courage and the heart to dive.
All rental diving equipment is up to date and standard. Their complete diving set consisting of wetsuits, swim fins, buoyancy compensators, diving masks, diving regulators with hose, submersible pressure gauge, air t an ks, power inflators and weights.

In the world of underwater diving, it is imperative to get proper training and certification. The certification process is about building skills and confidence to manage risk. John Miller, Diving Instructor and owner of PNG Pro Dive said: “My theory is that there is a difference between risk and danger. Yes, diving may have risks but it is not dangerous because the people running the show know what they are doing. So, diving is not a dangerous activity at all and the risks are manageable once one is taught the basic skills.”
PNG Pro Dive run their training under the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). Just like other organizations, they have a structure, and right at the bottom is where beginners start diving. This is a training program that gives you
the skills and knowledge to dive independently under 18 meters of ocean depth. And as you get more experience, you can sign up for more adventurous activities such as sightseeing of exotic coral reefs to underwater war relics or even underwater cave diving.
To become a certified diver, one must take four dives with instructors to advance. For beginners, the first session usually takes place in a pool. Divers are geared up in swim suits and taught three basic skills: one - breathing through a gauge; twocommunication in sign language; and three - handling gear. It may also be possible for that to be done in the
dives are usually done in swallow reefs, then the depths increase as the dives increase. The progression is to help the diver get comfortable to lower depths and associate themselves with any risks involved in diving at such low depths. With the cumulative experience of the diving instructors, backed with a fivestar facility award by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), PNG Pro Dive has the capabilities to facilitate a successful introduction to underwater diving for any novice. All it takes is one’s willingness to experience the freedom and serenity of underwater diving, and PNG Pro Dive will help introduce you to a whole new whole below the surface of our oceans.

By Maureen Weiake a break from the hustle and bustle of life and venture into another world with scuba diving.
Papua New Guinea is a land of spectacular scenery and unique creatures both above and below the water’s surface. It is an adventurer’s playground with thick tropical jungles, high mountain ranges, beautiful coasts and spectacular scuba diving spots.
The surrounding waters of the nation’s capital offer some spectacular diving sites. The most prominent scuba diving operator in Port Moresby is PRO Dive PNG who have been in operation since 1995. The team of highly qualified and certified dive masters and instructors have trained divers and conducted tours across Papua New Guinea for almost three decades.
They provide everything a scuba diver may need when diving in Papua New Guinea. Whether you are just beginning your scuba training or a seasoned diver –PRO Dive PNG is your go-to dive operator for all your scuba diving needs and queries.
PRO Dive PNG’s Open Water Course has become very popular over the last two decades. This has encouraged a growing interest in scuba diving in Papua New Guinea by residents and visitors alike.
There are several skills that a beginner diver in the Open Water Course must acquire – they include:
Gives divers control of their buoyancy
Helps divers move and navigate swiftly underwater
Insulates divers to help retain body heat
Helps divers see clearly underwater
Provides air to breathe underwater
Here are eight Basic Hand Signals to Help You Communicate Underwater
BREATHING THROUGH A MOUTH PIECE
Breathing through our nose is something everyone is more accustomed to. That's why breathing through the mouth piece is probably the hardest part of the diving lesson. But once you get it, the excitement creeps in, signaling you’re ready.
BALANCING YOUR BUOYANCY
During training, you will learn about positive, negative, and neutral buoyancy, all of which are controlled by several factors including your breathing, the amount of additional weight you wear, and the amount of air in your buoyancy compensator (BCD). To add air to your BCD, press the inflate button in short, sharp bursts. When you are underwater, it is important to add air slowly so that you can control your buoyancy.
Balancing your buoyancy gives you a surreal experience, where it feels like you’re floating in the clouds except through water.
CLEARING YOUR MASK
During diving, water can easily slip through your mask and cloud your view. No matter how much water is in your mask, the method for clearing it is the same. Breathe deeply through your regulator, then use your fingers to hold the top of the mask frame in place. Look slightly upwards, and breathe out through your nose. The air from your nose will expel the water out of the bottom of the mask. Do this as many times as necessary to completely clear your mask. But it is important to remain calm.
RECOVERING A REGULATOR
To recover a regulator that has been knocked from your mouth, first position yourself upright in the water. Then, lean to your right, extend your arm down to your knee and behind you as far as your cylinder before sweeping it forwards again. The regulator hose should now be caught over your arm, allowing you to replace the second stage correctly in your mouth. Throughout this process, you must adhere to the first rule of scuba (never hold your breath) by blowing small bubbles.
At this point, the regulator will be full of water. In order to breathe through it, you must clear it. There are two ways to do this. Firstly, you can exhale sharply to expel water out of the second stage. Or, you can clear it by pressing the purge button in the center of the regulator. To prevent water from being pushed into your mouth, remember to use your tongue as a splash guard. Also, it is important to remember to blow out air from your ears so they don’t ring and suffer from pressure.
GUARDIAN OF THE SEA
Meet PNG’s protectors of the sea, and nd out how they are ghting to save our marine environment.’
By Elizabeth MakisIIn myths, fairytales and legends there have been representations of celestial and fictional beings who are perceived to be guardians of a particular sacred site. Most of these sites are of grave importance and play an important role to mankind. Though there are different roles performed by these beings, they serve a common purpose and that is to protect.
This article introduces a group of protectors from Talasea in the West New Britain Province, who have taken on the responsibility of protecting Papua New Guinea’s seas and marine life.
‘Mahonia Na Dari’ is the name adopted by these caretakers, which means ‘Guardian of the Sea’ in the local Bakovi language of Talasea. It is an organization that runs education conservation programs and serves as a research centre for studying the natural marine environment of Kimbe Bay and other coastal areas in the country.
The ‘Guardian of the Sea’ was established in 1997 between the parties – Nature Conservation, the European Union Islands Regional Environment Program and Walindi Plantation Resort. The following year, Mahonia Na Dari registered as an independent non-government organization with its own board of
directors.
A program developed by Mahonia Na Dari and the Walindi Plantation Resort is the ‘Marine Environment Education Program’ (MEEP), which is well-known throughout West New Britain Province, especially among primary and secondary schools.
According to Mahonia Na Dari, this education and awareness program has proven to be a powerful tool in building support for conservation, increasing environmental awareness, and inspiring local action towards the protection of local reefs, waterways, turtle nesting areas, sea grass beds, mangrove areas and cultural sites – even inspiring youths to pursue careers in the field of marine biology.
The MEEP program has four sub categories that target different age groups so learning can be effective and meaningful. These four learning programs are: Intensive MEEP, Junior
Image: Underwater diver swimming through a coral reef in Kimbe, West New Britain Province.MEEP, Baby MEEP and Teacher’s MEEP. Intensive MEEP is a nine-to-10-days program for secondary school students. Learning topics cover a variety of subjects including marine biology, conservation, scientific survey methods and coral reef ecology. It is both a classroom and outdoor learning experience for all participants.
Junior MEEP is less intense and is tailored for primary school students, while Baby MEEP is a program for children between the ages six and 10 years old. Both Junior and Baby MEEP consist of a one-day tour involving fun activities that include reef walks, interactive storytelling, artwork, videos and a puppet show.
The fourth category is the Teacher MEEP. This is a five-to-10-day workshop that equips teachers with the skills needed to deliver effective environmental education in schools and communities.
Mahonia Na Dari is located next door to the famous Walindi Plantation Resort –one of the country’s best dive resorts. The ‘Guardian of the Sea’ is a non-government organisation conceived and founded by the resort’s owners, the late Max Benjamin and his wife Cecilia. The Nature Conservation helped facilitate the education and awareness program during the organisation’s tenure at the Walindi Nature Centre.
The Walindi Plantation Resort is a diver’s paradise and a gateway to Kimbe Bay, which has 75% of the world’s coral species (part of the famous ‘Coral Triangle’). Apart from scuba diving, Walindi also provides free-diving, snorkelling, bird watching,
land tours and live-aboard experiences on the dive boats MV Febrina and MV Oceania. Guests are accommodated in village styled bungalows, fully furnished with modern comforts, and a scenic garden and ocean view. Walindi Plantation Resort also involves local communities in several awareness programs that connect conservation, livelihoods and culture. Mahonia Na Dari proudly continues its guardian duties protecting the seas of West New Britain with its enriching marine conservation
education programs involving local schools and communities. The future of Papua New Guinea’s marine life is secure with Mahonia Na Dari as its guardian.

OUTDOOR LEARNING AT PORT MORESBY NATURE PARK
Port Moresby Nature Park ensure that the future generation know of the importance of conserving our wildlife and environment through various school programs.
By Elizabeth MakisLearning in nature takes education out of the classrooms and into the natural environment, using it as a unique tool to acquire knowledge and develop skills. At the Port Moresby Nature Park, learning has moved beyond the classroom walls to the natural outdoor world - a place filled with fun and wonder.
Port Moresby Nature Park initiated the School Excursion Program in 2013, and since t hen, the Park has been delivering quality school excursion programs reaching over 24,000 students each year. In 2019, the program was redesigned to create a new and exciting practical-based lesson plan for students. The excursion program helps support teachers in their lesson plans and curriculum outcomes.
For the Park’s educat ion program, t hey offer school holiday programs and themed-week programs throughout the year. The Park’s education excursion programs has four special themed-month programs.
THEMED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
WILD FOR WILDLIFE (GRADES 4 -8)
The Wild for Wildlife Program essentially teaches students of the importance of conservation. Port Moresby Nature Park provides students an opportunity to learn first-hand about PNG’s amazing wildlife, the importance of protection, and what conservation groups are doing to save our animal species. The program imparts various information on how to love, care for, and protect our wildlife, and also shows students the classification of wildlife. It is a great program that allows children to get up close and personal with these animals, and to experience learning not from a text book.
ENVIRONMENT & ME (GRADES 4 -8)
The Environment & Me Program is more than just an educational program, it is a pathway to show students the importance of environmental conservation through a series of fun activities based on themes set by the park. The Environment & me Program allows students to learn practical tips to save our planet and live greener each and every day both at school and at home. Taking good care of the environment is an important undertaking and is not reinforced extensively as it should be in the classroom. Students are shown the importance of saving water, managing waste, saving energy, and recognizing protected areas through this program. Being responsible and taking care of our natural environment is an important lesson that students must learn.
CULTURE CONNECTS (GRADES 4 -8)
The Culture Connects Program is an initiative by the Port Moresby Nature Park to allow students to explore the diverse flora and fauna of PNG and understand how they connect and promote our culture. Students can learn how our ancestors were among the first conservationists in the world and how embracing our past connects us to preserving our future. By running this program, Port Moresby Nature Park not only shows students the significance of our history and culture but also shows them how we can embrace our culture by practicing the conservation methods our ancestors used.
BEASTS WITH BITE (GRADES 1-4)
While everyone considers animals such as snakes, crocodiles, spiders, bats, and other creepy-crawlies scary and dangerous animals, Port Moresby Nature PARK tries to show students that these animals are often misunderstood. Which is why the Beasts with Bite Program was developed to allow students to see these animals in a different way. By allowing young students to be exposed to these animals, in a controlled environment, it can teach them the secrets to understanding the common misconception of these poor creatures. With experienced handlers present, students are shown a more sensitive side of some of PNG’s most misunderstood wildlife.
Port Moresby Nature Parks outdoor learning experience is a greay way to teach our young children the importance of our natural environment and how we can protect it. How humanity affects the natural environment will greatly impact us in the future. Port Moresby Nature Park is imparting knowledge that will save our natural environment and preserve it for future generations of Papua New Guineans.
With continuous environmental issues affecting many societies today, the work of Port Moresby Nature Park will be even more important as they advocate, protect and conserve PNG’s Wildlife and the Environment through education of our future generation.
WILDLIFE RESCUE
Port Moresby Nature Park's efforts to create a reserve for the natural environment, and an educational hub for future generations.
By Elizabeth MakisWildlife Rescue is all about preventing and stopping the degradation of ecosystems. At Port Moresby Nature Park, all their efforts and work put towards keeping the park up and running all have to do with conservation of wildlife.
Apart from recreat ional attract ions, the park is also focused on protecting and sustaining its' resident plants and wildlife.
Port Moresby Nature Park is the only Wildlife Rescue Center in Papua New Guinea.
Papua New Guinea is one of the World's most important 'biodiversity hot-spots': home to hundreds of species found nowhere else on our planet, including tree ka ngaroos and birds of paradise. Many of these animal
species are endangered and need the help of wi ll ing individuals. Every day is a rescue mission at the Port Moresby Nature Park. Animals are rescued from the illegal pet trade, wildlife trafficking and become casualties of human activities.
Behind-the-scenes, the Parks’ Wildlife Team cares for wildlife ca sualties and con fiscations brought to the Center every day. After a period of treatment and rehabilitation, many of our rescued animals are successfully released back to the wild. Because of the parks’ efforts, visitors to the Nature Park are able to discover the amazing plants and animals found throughout PNG; including many un ique species found nowhere else on Earth.
Port Moresby Nature Park is the

Others may find a permanent home in the Parks' sanctuary, as part of the conservation breeding programs, or as an Ambassador for their species educating local school children.
This has led to a greater awareness of the importance of conservation and the protection of our wildlife. It has also inspired the park to become more actively engaged with school children, inviting them to the park for an outdoor learning experience on plant and wildlife conservation.
In its efforts to save and protect PNGs' diverse wildlife, the Port Moresby Nature Park, through its Wildlife Rescue Centre, have saved and rehabilitated over a hundred native animals.
ABOUT THE WILDLIFE RESCUE
Port Moresby Nature Park is Papua New Guinea's only Welfare-accredited member of the Zoo & Aquarium Association of Australasia (ZAA). THE PARK works with THEIR Sister Zoo (Zoos Victoria) and a network of conservation organizations throughout New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific to protect wildlife.

Get to know the Flame Bowerbird, a rare and truly unique bird from Papua New Guinea.
By Pauline RimanHe moves like a small fireball along the green and brown forest floor – a whoosh and a bounce across shrubs and moss beds, an almost fairytale like creature of the most brilliant red, orange and yellow plumage one will ever see on this side of the southern hemisphere.
This is no mythical animal – it even has a scientific name: Sericulus ardens.
Introducing one of Papua New Guinea’s hottest avian bachelors – the male Flame Bowerbird.
Found in the interior rainforests of Papua New Guinea, particularly in the Western Province, this handsome and iconic bird is highly sought after by a growing number of visiting bird watchers.
The male Flame Bowerbird is one of the most breathtaking and mesmerizing birds to watch in the wild. This beautiful creature spends its entire life in the pursuit of love, and the fascinating courtship dances it is gradually becoming known for owes a lot to its place of origin on the island of New Guinea – than ks to geography, evolut ion and natural select ion.
Several nature films exist online that offer wonderful insights into the romantic pursuits of the Flame Bowerbird. One can never seem to tire of watching this charming bird – whether in the wild or on screen.
As observers and novices of nature, one cannot help but be inspired by the life of all organisms living on this planet. These are bountiful lessons that nature can offer us in life:
BE PROUD OF YOUR COLORS
Adult Flame Bowerbirds can grow up to 25 cm long and 18 cm wide. The males are the most colorful – having flame orange feathers running from head to chest then bright yellow with their tales tipped black. The females are not as visually striking as their male counterparts – possessing a tawny green color with a golden yellow tummy. The enchanting colors of the male Flame Bowerbird are the greatest assets of his showmanship. However, being the brightest thing in the forest can also attract unwanted attention – especially from predators like eagles, hawks and large lizards. Regardless of this, determined, and undeterred, the Flame Bowerbird never falters from his chosen path in life, he carries on as the star of his bright, bold and beautiful life.
KEEP YOUR HOME BEAUTIFUL AND TIDY
The male Flame Bowerbird is an impeccable host. As a member of the bowerbird family, he is a skilled builder, and known for his bowers that are built solely for wooing his visiting mistresses. His bower is a small yet unique throne-like structure built out of dry twigs with a protruding wall. During the male Flame Bowerbirds courtship dance, the female will be seen perched in the bower looking at the performance before her. He showers her with gifts, which are often brightly colored objects such as berries, leaves, shells, pebbles and more. These presents are positioned around the bower or placed at his guests’ feet when they arrive. The Flame Bowerbird’s bachelor pad is always kept neat, and the owner can be seen relentlessly clearing fallen leaves and other debris from his stage, as well as adjusting his bower so it is structurally sound for his guests to sit comfortably in.
DANCE WITHOUT FEAR
Dancing is what the Flame Bowerbird does best, and he does this was such intensity that he is quite spellbinding to watch. At first his eyes dilate and contract in odd sequence – like the aperture of a camera lens that also makes one feel like you’re looking at a spiral ‘hypno-wheel’. His performance transitions to him crouching, then slowly rising as he deliberately waves one side of his gorgeous flame-colored wings. His courtship dance can take up to 40-minutes – quite a feat for keeping one’s audience enthralled, but it has been a dance his species has taken eons to perfect.
PERSEVERe
Female Flame Bowerbirds are incredibly selective and are not easily impressed by their suitors. Males have to work extremely hard to prove worthy of their female’s time and attention. Perseverance is key to their day-to-day existence, and nothing except their species jealous rivalries can hinder their amorous pursuits. Their temperamental behavior often leads to male envy, which involve deliberately interrupting each other’s courtship displays or destroying bowers of their rivals. In their average 20-to-30-year lifespan, Flame Bowerbirds face many threats to their survival such as predators and human impacts on their environment – habitat loss and degradation, and hunting. Although the Flame Bowerbird is listed as ‘Least Concern’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, their population has been decreasing since their discovery.
Since appearing on world-renown documentaries like the BBC, National Geographic and the widely acclaimed ‘Dancing with the Birds’ 2019 film on Netflix, the Flame Bowerbird has captivated the world over with its sunset colors and enchanting dances. This extraordinary Papua New Guinean bird deserves to be studied and protected for future generations to admire and appreciate.

The Park is located approximately 23 kilometers (14.30 miles) North-East from Port Moresby at the edge of the Sogeri Plateau. It occupies an area of 1,063 ha at an elevation of 630 to 833 meters giving it the most impeccable location to have an aerial view of Port Moresby from the Lookout point.
The vegetation around the park is made up of Eucalypt Savannah, Secondary Forest mainly consisting of native casuarina trees
Varirata National Park’s location and vegetation provides an ideal habitat for a variety of birds, many of which are endemic to Papua New Guinea. As such the park is a top site for bird watching in the Central Province. Bird watching tours to Varirata can be booked through PNG Explorers International and New Guinea Natural Tours. Some of the extraordinary bird life that can be found at the park include the Raggiana Bird of Paradise, Hooded Pitohui, Southern Cassowary, Hornbill, Kingfisher, Megapodes – as well as other animals like wallabies, echidnas, bandicoots, green pythons, parrots, butterflies and more. Varirata National Park is known for its breathtaking lookouts, lakes, streams and hiking trails. The ‘Main Lookout’ is the Park’s most popular attraction. The majestic views stretch over the Sogeri escarpment, surrounding hills, coastline and the city of Port Moresby. There are also several lookouts in the park that offer interesting views of the lush vegetation found up at Varirata.
A lake can be found in the middle of the park, and is home to some interesting flora and fauna – including frogs and egrets. The park has five tracks that are well signposted and often lead to other unique attractions like the Koiari Tree House and even the Raggiana Birds of Paradise. Discover stunning plant life during your hike and immerse yourself in a symphony of insect-sound and birdsong.
The park has several spots suitable to layout a picnic while enjoying the lush green scenery. The picnic areas are built in places that have access to breathtaking views. In addition, they have functioning well-maintained toilets, running water taps, barbecue areas, haus-wins and picnic tables. The roads are accessible and sealed, with one entry point and exit point.
An Information Centre can be found at the main picnic site. This is a modern building with some interesting displays that provide invaluable information about Varirata’s history, the significance of the Koiari culture, and the amazing flora and fauna that can be found there.
Varirata is a popular spot for Port Moresby residents, especially school excursions, picnics and weekend outings.
IARO KRAII RAPIDS: SOGERI'S BEST KEPT SECRET
Discover Sogeri's hidden gem, Iaro Kraii Rapids, the perfect weekend getaway.
By Ingrid KumanThe sounds of birds singing their morning majestic calls rang across the misty camping and picnic site of Iarokrai rapids in the Sogeri plateau. I’ve been an avid visitor to Sogeri as a Moresby resident since childhood, it is the usual weekend gateway, with a variety of activities and sites to visit, fresh produce to indulge in and friendly locals, makes it hard not to stay away for too long. After hearing stories of an ancient “tumbuna” stone markings site on the stone like half-cave, I decided it was time to pack a change for the night, trekking shoes and head up to Iarokrai for a camping and trekking trip over the weekend with friends.
I had only recently discovered the beauty of Iarokrai Rapids, discreetly nestled in a disguise of red clay ground, it is situated a few kilometers down the road past the overly popular Crystal Rapids picnic area, just a stone throws away from Sirinumu dam. The custodian of this beauty of a gem is a young, energetic man, filled with pa ssion to empower his youth in the commun ity by providing income earning opport un ities through Tourism and Agriculture. Billy Marks has been welcoming visitors to his picnic spot since 2017 and has gradually seen a steady increase of visitors over the past years, many of whom, are Port Moresby residents.
Billy had told me about these stone marking on a previous trip to Iarokrai Rapids, this was enough to intrigue the senses and I knew I just had to go back, this time with trekking shoes in tow. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon, just after 7 pm at Iarokrai and were met with an eight-men tent setup and a huge fire lit and roaring away with the cool misty lawns in the backdrop. Dinner a nd stories around the camp fire followed suit until it was time to head to bed for an early sta rt the next morning. Billy has already organized guides who were the local custodians of the stone writing site, four lean middle-aged men, were
Image: Aerial view of the Sogeri Mountains surrounding Iaro Kraii Rapids.. Picture credits: Iaro Kraii Rapids Facebook Page Image: The flowing river at Iaro Kraii Rapids.it. The trek to the stone writing site took approximately two (2) hours, weaving through lush forests, dodging fallen branches and incredible rock formations, the makeshift tree bridge crossing brought an adrenaline rush at first sight, that quickly subsided as I negotiated my steps across with a witty sense of accomplishment once I had reached the other side.
Two hours later we reached the stone writing site and it absolutely blew our minds. Stone markings that were possibly hundreds of years old, untold stories that held the secrets of customs and traditions of the years gone. My heart sunk when we heard of the oral history being lost and the people, to whom this history belongs, could not tell us the stories behind these markings, only mere assumptions of what the drawings could perhaps mean. I left that day with a sense of appreciation of how incredibly important oral history is in a society such as ours, entwined in such rarity, bestowed with a culture so ancient and customs, traditions so sacred it could humble the proudest. Sta ring at those markings made me so eager to know what story it told, but I guess, some things are better left unsaid.
The trek back to the Iarokrai rapids was a good one and a half hours, shorter and less intense than the trek to the stone writing site with a quick stop enroute on the top of the range, the view was absolutely breathtaking to say the least. When we returned to our camping site
invigorate the soul, renewal of the sense, it was truly therapy in a trek.
If you live in Port Moresby or are visiting, make the trip up to Sogeri, channel your inner adventure spirit and experience something new.
Whether you’re looking for a weekend escape for a day or a camping site to take in the beauty of Sogeri, the lush green lawns make it the perfect ad hoc rugby field or running track for kids, the BBQ facilities are just perfect to get a hearty meal on the table after a cool dip in the fast-flowing green-clear rapids. If your kids are energetic and love to explore, the traditional Koiari tree house, kayaks and swings in the area are ideal to keep them bus y.
The beauty of Iarokrai Rapids is effortless, but the pa ssion and vision Billy and his fam ily have to make this site an attraction that stands out, is what makes a trip to Iarokrai

MEET PNG'S TOURISM PIONEER: BOB BATES
Meet one of Papua New Guinea's well-known tourism pioneers - Bob Bates, founder of Trans Niugini Tours.
By Jonah KeiBob Bates hails from Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. Though originally from the United States of America, he was born and raised in Australia.
Mr. Bates, an engineer by profession, left his country and came to PNG in 1964 at the age of 24. Upon completing college, Mr. Bates was given a contract, by the PNG government, where he had to construct roads and bridges, build infrastructures, repair planes, and even erect mini-hydro stat ions,
However, after completing his contract, Mr. Bates did not return to Australia; instead he chose to remain here in PNG, and has remained here for 59 years.
In 1976, Bob Bates founded Trans Niugini Tours in the highlands city of
Mount Hagen. The company sta rted from humble beginnings, operating simple four-wheel drive adventure trips, for visiting tourists, around the PNG Highlands. Slowly Trans Niugini Tours sta rted experiencing an influx of visitors, the company moved into more 'mainstream' tourism with the addition of several wilderness lodges across PNG.
In 1978 Trans Niugini Tours acquired Karawari Lodge in the lowlands of the East Sepik Province. Seven years later in 1985, the company built A mbua Lodge in the Hela Province. In 1989 Trans Niugini Tours acquired their famous 9-berth 'floating lodge', the Sepik Spirit. The ship was commissioned and built in the Lae City t hen sailed via the coast of Madang to its current home on the
mighty Sepik River. In 1991, the Malolo Plantation Lodge on the Madang North Coast was acquired and completely renovated. Bensbach Wildlife Lodge in a far corner of the Western Province was officially added to Trans Niugini's Portfolio in 2003. Rondon Ridge, built high in the mountains above Mount Hagen was opened in 2006 providing a luxurious introduction to Trans Niugini Tours lodges and welcome stepping stone to civilization before departure from Mount Hagen. Lake Murray Lodge is the latest addition to Trans Niugini Tours and was built in 2013 in the remote Western Province, on a small island in Lake Murray.
W hen asked if he had any future plans to expand the business portfolio, he chuckled and said he is not
intending to build any more lodges. Instead, he wanted to build a museum at his Rondon Ridge lodge and turn it into a Cultural Center.
“I do not have any plans to expand the business. We will focus on the current seven lodges that we have and develop them to meet the demand, expectations and satisfaction of the customers,” Bates said.
Running a tourism business, just like any other business, has its chal lenges. Mr. Bates stated that running a tourism business is not for the fainthearted and certainly not for those who do not dare to take risks.
“To venture into the tourism industry in PNG is a very chal lenging and daunting task, but if you have good management skills and business acumen strategy, you can be able to grow your business from scratch to a mi ll ion-kina industry,” he added.
tranquility of nature. He plans to spend the remainder of his days here in his home in Mt. Hagen.
In the years to come, Bob Bates legacy will be one not easily forgotten. In a span of 59 years (and still counting), Mr. Bates has done so
Papua New Guinea without most people noticing. His Wilderness Lodges, situated across some of the most remote corners of PNG, contribute greatly to all the local communities that surround his lodges. Furthermore, Mr. Bates has promoted Papua New

The lodge is of a high quality and standard that is sure to meet the expectations and satisfaction of any visitor. The majestic view normally leaves tourists and visitors alike in awe. The calmness and serenity of the environment is soothing to the soul. It is a complete package.
The owner of Rondon Ridge, Bob Bates, has built his house at the back of the lodge and lives there. He is currently constructing a new road for the tourists and customers to travel on a comfortable and quality road to access the lodge’s facilities.
Every year, the lodge would accommodate more than 4,000 tourists. However, the number of tourists has declined after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nonetheless, the lodge is slowly picking up its momentum postpandemic – in terms of the number of customers.
The upcoming Mt Hagen Cultural Show will see hundreds of tourists flooding the lodge. With the construction of additional rooms, Rondon Ridge is ready to accommodate and cater for the influx number of tourists who will travel to Mt Hagen to watch the annual cultural festivity later this year.
