Cooking for Better Health

A half-day, health-based cookery course at Swinton Cookery School. Nutritionist Kate Chaytor-Norris will talk through how to reduce sugar intake and offer alternatives, how to plan menus to combat chronic health problems and how food can be medicinal whilst still tasting fantastic! RHS Harlow Carr Flower Show

RHS Harlow Carr Flower Show returns this summer (Thursday 23 – Sunday 26 June 2022), marking the start of the flower show season at RHS gardens. The show offers visitors the opportunity to browse and purchase beautiful plants, take in inspirational displays, and enjoy an exciting selection of talks, demonstrations and live music. A must for garden lovers, the four-day event will bring a fantastic variety of exhibitors to the beautiful 58-acre garden in Harrogate. Discover early summer blooms, tempting edibles, shrubs, bulbs, and rare and unusual perennials. Speak with the growers to learn more about what will work in your garden, and browse a beautiful range of garden ornaments and metalwork, handmade garden gifts and tools at the highquality trade stands. The exhibiting nurseries have unrivalled expertise. RHS Chelsea Flower Show gold medal award-winning nursery Hare Spring Cottage Plants are owners of the National Collections of Camassia and Sidalcea, cottage garden musthaves which work well in containers or beds. Camassias are perfect in a naturalistic setting and are excellent for brightening up shadier areas, while Sidalcea are a magnet for pollinating insects. Lancashire-based Brighter Blooms specialise in growing high-quality Zantedeschia suitable for a UK environment. Brighter Blooms also exhibited this bold, exotic-looking plant, known as the Calla Lily, at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2022. Visitors to the Harlow Carr Flower Show can also enjoy demonstrations and workshops throughout the event. Renowned Yorkshire-based gardener and RHS judge Martin Fish will be sharing his advice and insight from more than 30 years’ experience, while floral designer Jonathan Moseley will demonstrate how to create stunning cut summer flower displays. Relax to live music and tuck into a delicious selection of local food and drink, including the iconic Bettys Tea Rooms. An introduction to identifying butterflies found in Yorkshire and how to record them, in partnership with Butterfly Conservation. The naval bombardment of Hartlepool began on 16 December 1914. Join museum researcher Steve Erskine for a fascinating visit to the town to discover more about the early action, on home soil, of the First World War. The terrain is flat, the pace sedate but the story, fascinating. You will visit sites associated with the attack, many of which still bear the scars of events more than a century ago. £45.
Mouseman Day Tour

It may come as a surprise that The Green Howards Museum’s collection includes numerous pieces of Robert ‘Mousey’ Thompson furniture, much of it on display and regularly used at museum events. This summer the museum is inviting fans of the Mouseman’s furniture to find out more about the pieces created for those who served; part of a full day immersed in Mousey, and including a visit to the Kilburn base of this ever-popular Yorkshire furniture maker. “Starting with a coffee here at the museum, in the stunning surroundings of our Normanby Room, sitting on Mouseman chairs at our Mouseman tables, you’ll be introduced to our extensive collection of Robert Thompson furniture. We’ll explore the stories connected to the furniture on display and discuss the different types of furniture commissioned by the regiment. Next, a gentle stroll to the regimental chapel in St Mary’s parish church will enable us to see yet more unique pieces of Thompson’s work. In the afternoon, we’ll head over to Kilburn for a tour of the Robert Thompson visitor centre.” Starts at 9.45am, transport returns to Richmond between 4pm and 5pm. Join John Harrison of ‘Drawn in Yorkshire’ in Thorp Perrow’s private garden for an introduction in line and wash technique: the creation of a pen and ink sketch tinted with a wash of coloured ink or watercolour. Footfall is everything and last year’s move of The Northern Antiques Fair to The Garden Rooms at Tennants from Harrogate deemed it an overwhelming success with more than 2,600 people visiting the event over the fourday period. “The fair looked magnificent in the light and airy setting of the Garden Rooms and Cloisters at Tennants and everyone was very impressed with the facilities, not least the excellent catering and ample parking which the location offers,” said a very happy Ingrid Nilson, fair director, on the final day of last year’s fair. This year the fair will increase in size to over 40 exhibitors who will be bringing a wide selection of disciplines including formal and country furniture, traditional and contemporary paintings and sculpture, early to modern glass, silver and jewellery, oriental rugs and carpets, ceramics and lighting, clocks and watches, Art Nouveau and Art Deco design objects and much more. Prices range from £100 to five figure sums. Carrying on from last year, the fair’s charity partner is Two Ridings Community Foundation. Make sure the dates are in your diary and remember to book a table for lunch in Tennants’ renowned café and bistro as it is a very popular destination for a day out.
