105 12th Ave Surprises await the visitors to this unique home. From the first viewing, it looks like a charming little bungalow with a picket fence and blue shutters. However, upon entering you will find that this home just goes on and on. Built in 1956 and remodeled in the 1990’s, it contains 3 bedrooms and 2 baths and a roomy second floor. Notice the Trompe L’Oeil painting on the wall, a New Orleans-style garden and fountain. Going up the stairs to the second floor notice a collection of tiles that are memorabilia from family and world travels of the prior owners. In the third bedroom, called the “project room”, there is a large collection of fishing charts and nautical charts, rods and reels ,and fishing mementos from Connecticut and Florida. Amazingly enough, this home, one of a kind, built by Jim Nelson in 1971, has had only two occupants. Jim designed and built this unique aqua and green home that you can easily identify by the large steel fishes facing the road. The wood construction is of cypress. Notice the odd angles in the design, which is a feature that diverts strong winds while other flat-roofed homes may not withstand our occasional major storms. You enter through a walkway flanked by a bromeliad and orchid collection. All plants in the walkway and back of the home are native to the area. The entrance via glass doors brings you to an airy staircase under which is a wine tasting alcove. Moving forward you can peek into the office on the right, lighted by windows on both sides that enable the owner to enjoy the flowers and plants outside. Notice the large frog that he keeps for company. You ascend the floating staircase to the second floor and the master suite with its vaulted ceiling that make this space open and airy. The large entryway into the master bedroom is being renovated into a library. This is a functional as well as a treasure of a home to enjoy. 2909 Sunset Way This lovely home was built in 1927, about the same time as the Don CeSar. The owners have changed it radically from the time they purchased it in 1983. Most of the architectural plans were designed and carried out by the owner. When the owners acquired the property it was a duplex apartment with a detached garage. The first phase of renovation was to replace and enlarge the existing garage, add an apartment above it and connect it to the main house. Five years later the owners demolished virtually the entire interior of the house and converted it back into a single family home. In doing so the exterior took on a Cape Cod-style with a new steeped roof, utilizing the existing aluminum siding. Renovation to the floors in the main living room required new wood, but the original Spanish tiles were salvaged and used for the entryway, kitchen, dining room and most of the baths. Note the rounded corners of walls. All of the interior molding and door trim is new and was created to match the new architectural style of the house. Built in 1925 this Mediterranean beauty sits facing the Intracoastal Waterway. While the house has a secluded feeling from the street, when you round the foyer you will see the spectacular view from the open plan and through the glass wall facing the widest point of the Bay. Two bedrooms and private baths, one with an original (non-working) fireplace, can be accessed through beautiful wooden arched doorways found throughout the home. As you ascend the staircase to a completely private second floor suite, notice the Xian, Chinese warrior statue in the alcove and the famous characters in the photos on the ‘bridge’ wall. Reminiscent of the “Prairie Style” homes so popular in the 30’s and 40’s, the black and white exterior of this restored two-story cottage welcomes visitors. The house was built in 1920 by John & Susan Weber. It was referred to by the locals and the owners as “Green Gables”. Renovated in March of 2011, the first order of the construction was to move the home five feet. The owners were determined to keep the feel of the old cottage in the nautical-themed kitchen. Floors and counters were finished in blue and white to copy the original colors of the kitchen. Upstairs there is a sitting room, two bedrooms and a retreat “A Man Cave”. Sponsor: Ronald F. Necessories Gallery & Boutique, located at 2057 Central Avenue, specializes in clothing, jewelry, art and home decor. …Herb Snitzer’s career covers over fifty years of image-making. From 1957 when he graduated from the Philadelphia College of Art, he moved to New York City where he quickly established himself as one of the top young photojournalists. He loves The Pearl in Treasure Island, Pasadena Steakhouse, PJ’s, and Nori Thai among his favorites, to give you an idea of his range. With all the Italian
places around, (I thought we had more than enough) I’d never been able to satisfy his taste for Illinois pizza. That problem has been solved. Ron Shapardo, owner of Shepardo’s Ristorante & Pizzaria at 4599 Gulf Blvd., St. Pete Beach, started working at his grandparents place, “Saputo’s” in Springfield, IL when he was 12 years old. Saputo’s is the fine dining spot in the Illinois state capitol, where you can find lobbyists wining and dining State Legislators. You might also run into visiting dignitaries or performers from the nearby convention center. When Tom’s large 16-inch sausage and onion pizza arrived at our table, he took one look and said “that’s it”. It was thin, hot, crispy and delicious, sliced into squares, not slices, “like we’ve always done it”, said Ron. Tom said he’s taking his house off the market and staying now that he has a Jazz piano gig at Chill on Sunday, Monday & Wednesday nights from - 6:30-9:30 and he can get Illinois pizza delivered to his St. Pete Beach home. Shapardo’s also delivers to the Bayway and Tierra Verde, and offers eat in and take away for dinner and lunch daily, except no lunch on Sundays. In celebration of Paradise NEWS’ twentieth year in print, serving the barrier islands south of John’s Pass, and our recent “Business of the Year” award from the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce, we are sharing this issue with neighbors to the north, as far as North Redington Beach. For many years, the John’s Pass Bridge was an obstacle, and it was easier to go to the mainland than to travel up and down the beach. All that changed with the opening of the four-lane elevated bridge, so almost all of the information in Paradise NEWS is applicable to all the recipients getting this issue. Letters About a week ago on AOL Computer news, there was an article that caught my eye. It mentioned that “IF” you had a charge of $ 9.84 on your credit card bill, then your card has been compromised and if not reported at once to your credit card fraud department - well, sometime in the future, you may once again see a charge for that amount - $9.84, and then perhaps, since you did not notice that particular charge and/or forgot if you made it or not - you could then have a large purchase placed onto your card from those who have all of your information. Now - I saw on my Visa(I only carry the Marriott Visa Premier and my American Express Card) a month ago a charge of $9.84 and called Visa to have the charge removed because I could not remember making such a charge. Then on my Visa Bill, received today - there were 2 charges of $9.84 - and I remembered the AOL News Alert. I contacted the Visa Fraud Department, reported about the AOL article and that I had indeed charges of $9.84!!! They blocked the charging company, however, they also recommended that I receive a “New Card”, because even though blocked, they could use another avenue on behalf of charging my card. Since this made sense, I will receive a new card on Monday. The $9.84 charge on my Visa Bill shows the following: EESAC.com 011-43114329 and the charge of $9.84 I’m sure that you check your credit card bill-invoice itemized list of charges, as I do, but wanted to pass this information on to you. Pass-a-Grille Church Youth Run For the Needy Each year senior high youth at Pass-A-Grille Community Church spend much of their summers helping the needy, This is a real hands-on, helping, good news program. In 2012, the group sent50 local youth to the slums of Costa Rica. They fed children in a relief center, and dug up rocks to build the foundation for a church. Caleb was on that trip and says, “we got to experience a different culture from home. These people didnʼt have anything.” There were times when the work was very difficult. “You could say it was a little intimidating being in a different country; When asked about future mission he says, “I would love to go back, the feeling you get from helping others is like no other.” Joshua, a sophomore in high school, spoke about his most recent and favorite mission trip to Hollywood, CA.: a place, he points out, that has the highest population of homeless youth under 30. Josh says it was an eye opening and humbling experience. “The program allowed us to work directly with the homeless and hear a multitude of stories; it was incredible to learn that they were just like us. Many with a good education, but had a wrong turn.I consider it part of my summer schedule rather than taking time out of it. I just wish I had more time to do more work.” Jeanne Haemmelmann is Associate of Youth and Young Adults at Pass A Grille Community Church. Haemmelmann, who has been working with youth for over 20 years, says, “during these increasingly tough economic times, community service becomes a cornerstone for our youth. We need to be proud of our youth; they are sacrificing their time and developing awareness to the
issues that affect our communities and learning how crucial it is to make a positive impact. “This year, 45 of tour groupʼs youth will travel to Pocahontas, VA, to rebuild and repair homes for a community in desperate need. But the group’s work doesn’t stop with travel missions, they also reach out to our local community on a regular basis. This year they made and distributed blankets to the homeless of St. Pete, fed the residents of Pinellas Hope tent city, and bagged lunches for countless other groups.” The group depends on their families and the Church for their funding, but they also reach out to the community. Their 3rd annual beach run, called Make a Splash is being held on Sunday, March 2nd. The event is designed to raise funds to send these inspirational youths on their next mission. Beginning at 7:30 am with their annual 5K run, this year event organizers added a 1K family fun run to follow at 8 am. While registration happens online or in front of Pass-A-Grille Community Church on race day, the races happen across the street on the beach, at 1500 Pass-a-Grille Way, St. Pete Beach, Continuing into the afternoon, at Hurley Park, or-anizers have carnival-themed activities from cupcake decorating and face painting, to a bounce house and balloon animals. Music at SPC “Gibbs” CAMPUS MUSIC CENTER Deserves Our Support by Peter Roos The campus at 5th Avenue and 66th Street North has come a long way since I attended as a freshman at St. Petersburg Junior College. I worked at a brand new McDonalds Restaurant, 17 blocks north of the campus. The workers were all male. The sign outside between the “golden arches” changed while I was there, from 5 to 6 million served. Almost 45 years have sped by since then. My ‘Alma Mater’ Junior College has become a four-year institution, with multiple campuses throughout Pinellas. Specialties at the “Gibbs” Campus includes a planetarium; the West St. Petersburg Community Library; a fabulous art, music and performing arts program; and SPC’s only Music Center. I had the opportunity to experience the perfect acoustics of this cozy venue late in February for a Jazz performance by a Latin Jazz quartet and sextet Via Cal, as part of the Young St. Petersburg Jazz Festival. It was a sextet tribute to Latin Jazz great Cal Tjader, led by Frankie Pineiro with Richard Drexler, Hector Mayoral, John Jenkins, Joe Porter & Cole Hazlitt, with a number of excellent jazz standards for quartet thrown in. The music and performance was world class. The price of entry was $10. The room was 75 percent empty. I think the biggest problem was insufficient promotion. If you want to find out for yourself and you enjoy really good classical piano, you have a great chance to see and hear an awesome concert by Rebecca Penneys Friday, March 7, 7:30 to 9 pm, for $10. Steinway Artist Rebecca Penneys is a recitalist, chamber musician, orchestral soloist, educator and adjudicator. For six decades she has been hailed as a pianist of prodigious talent. Rebecca has played throughout the US, East Asia, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Western and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Canada. She is a popular guest artist, keynote speaker and pedagogue nationally and internationally. Her current and former students include prize winners in international competitions, and hold important teaching posts on every continent. Combining a busy concert schedule with seminars and master classes worldwide, she teaches international students at Eastman School of Music and at the Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival that had a very successful inaugural season in 2013. Rebecca divides her time between New York and Florida. She is Professor of Piano at Eastman since 1980 and is Artist-inResidence at St. Petersburg College. In New York she continues as founder-pianist in 1998 of the Salon Chamber Music Series, a five-concert series ,and she is also founder and artistic director in 2009 of a very popular young artist series called Eastman Piano Series at the Summit.

It’s Election Time Again. Many of you have already mailed a ballot to vote for the replacement of C. W. “Bill” Young, our longest serving national representative in Washington. If you live in St. Pete Beach, South Pasadena or Gulfport, you may have already voted for a new mayor, or commissioner for your district. Treasure Island did not have an election this year as we mentioned last month, as both Alan Bildz and Tom Ramsberger were reelected unopposed. If you are undecided or a procrastinator, you have until 6:59 pm on March 11 to make up your mind. St. Pete Beach is living up to it’s reputation as the political center of the barrier islands, as three contested races come down to the wire. It is not our job to tell you who to vote for. We do not even believe in media endorsing candidates for public office. It is our job simply to see that you have all the information you need to make an informed choices. We can also sometimes help when a candidate’s memory seems inaccurate about issues they supported, or didn’t. In this case, it appears everyone ran a pretty clean campaign. There were some flyers that surfaced from a prior election leveling outlandish charges at Mayor McFarlin. His opponent, Maria Lowe, appeared before the City Commission to apologize and attest to a complete lack of knowledge about how that could have occurred, when she learned that some copies of that flyer somehow got onto her computer and were attached to emails she had sent out in connection with her campaign. She had promised to run a clean campaign and appeared honestly aghast that even an appearance of impropriety had occurred. Her timing was unfortunate, as she had missed the audience comments portion of the meeting. All reports indicate that she made up for that misstep at the mayoral debate, sponsored by the League of Women Voters. Considering her relative newcomer status as a 19-month resident of St. Pete Beach, Lowe was well prepared. She has run a very active campaign, including a series of “cookie conversations”in parks all over town, ad in living rooms and condominium club houses. It is difficult to unseat an incumbent mayor who appears to have filled the position well, but I believe Maria Lowe has done the best job a newcomer can. Both the Pinellas Realtors Organization and the SPB Firefighters support her. Steve McFarlin is a 50-year resident of St. Pete Beach who has presided over the City Commission through some challenging times. The results of the balloting in the mayor’s race at this point are anyone’s guess.

District 1 in St. Pete Beach runs south from the Blind Pass Bridge through the Corey Business District. Many condos are included, mostly at the north end of the city, on the east side of Blind Pass Road and along the intercoastal waterway. There’s Captiva Cay, and St. Pete Beach Yacht and Tennis Club, where both Candidates live. Commissioner and 28-year resident Lorraine Huhn has served on the Board of her Condominium and Master Association. She was best known as founder of and spokesperson for SOLV, the pro-redevelopment political action committee that led the city in a battle to affirm the city’s revised comprehensive plan. She has become an involved and respected member of the commission in her two years on the job. Lorraine is opposed by Dr. Terri Finnerty, former ‘first lady’ of St. Pete Beach, whose husband started his political career in this seat, winning almost 60 percent of the vote against incumbent Deborah Martohue in 2006. Terri is endorsed by the Pinellas Realtors and the St. Pete Beach Firefighters. “Preserving our way of life while moving forward” is her campaign slogan. Terri has undergraduate degrees from Montclair (NJ) University and a Ed.D., Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Houston. James Anderson, a retired firefighter, is endorsed by his comrades in the St. Pete Beach department. The Pinellas Board of Realtors chose to endorse his opponent, Greg Premer. Anderson’s campaign mailer names his first campaign priority as”prevent unfair taxes and assessments on the citizens of St. Pete Beach.” Ironically, his lawsuit against the city, one of several suits argued by maverick attorney Ken Weiss, has, in essence, inflicted just such a tax of almost a half million dollars on the taxpayers here. Premer, married and father of three, is a six-year member of the city’s recreation advisory board, a 22-year resident who has traded presidency and VP of the Belle Vista Civic Association with Ward Frizilowski for 12 years. Premer, an account executive in the scoreboard business that sells scoreboards to towns and cities around Florida. I’ve seen the good and the bad and can tell the difference.” he said. PN

BAY GRASSES in Classes gets money where the marsh is! Partnership with Scotts Miracle-Gro funds 80,000 salt marsh plants to help restore Tampa Bay wetland nurseries, commonly known as saltmarsh, at their schools. The students then monitor and maintain the nurseries while learning about everything from salinity to pH levels and gaining valuable hands-on experience in habitat restoration activities. Once the nurseries reach maturity (about six to eight months) they serve as a source of native wetland plants that can be used in habitat restoration projects that bring students out of the classroom to harvest and plant saltmarsh.

The TVBP is composed of more than 75 local businesses and community groups. Mission is to support and promote existing and new businesses on Tierra Verde while showcasing the island as a place known for its business appreciation and community spirit. Here people live and work together for mutually positive results, both economically and socially. Each year, the TVBP donates a portion of the car show proceeds to local non-profit organizations. In 2012, donations were given to benefit the Veterans of South Pinellas County, and in 2013 donations were given to Tampa Bay Watch. This year’s proceeds will benefit the Eckerd College Search & Rescue Team (EC-SAR). This organization is one of the most unique co-curricular programs available to full-time, degreeseeking Eckerd students. It cannot be experienced at any other educational institution in the U.S.! Working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard, 911 Emergency Medical Response, and other state and local agencies, the team provides maritime assistance to the boaters of Tampa Bay. Students are trained in technical rescue, boating safety, seamanship, searching, fire fighting, de-watering, navigation, medical response and piloting rescue vessels. (See Paradise NEWS, November 2013 issue.) Receiving more than 500 calls each year, EC-SAR responds to virtually any sort of distress, disaster or problem imaginable. Under the direction of professionally-trained staff members, students coordinate the utilization of four rescue boats and an operations/communications center to save lives and property on a daily basis. The students do not get any academic credit for their work, nor are they paid. The team is funded through a variety of sources, with a larger portion of the budget coming from the local community.

Life is Complicated. So is the world of foreclosures. For those of you who have followed this column for very long (I’ve been writing it for FOUR YEARS this month!), you know that I maintain several core beliefs: 1. The too-big-to-fail Wall Street Banks created the real estate bubble, made many billions of dollars off it, and, in doing so, crashed the economy; 2. We (the taxpayers) bailed them out, believing that they would then do the right thing. They did not; 3. The Banks totally abandoned the basics of their own business, moving mortgages around like poker chips, without bothering to document the sales, and as a result: 4. They (frequently) cannot win a foreclosure without misleading the courts in some fundamental way. Over time, the politicians have done what they can to “fix” the problem for their patrons, the reckless Bankers, so proving your case against them has become more difficult, but (in many cases), it can still be done. There is a rule in the Florida courts that requires lawsuits to
be dismissed if a year goes by without record activity by the plaintiff to move it forward. We are seeing some cases where the banks have, in effect “painted themselves into a corner,” by some strikingly poor lawyering. They just can’t figure out how to win, so they let the case languish. When they run afoul of the one-year rule, the Courts go ahead and dismiss it. You may think that it would now be over for the Bank, but life is more complicated than that. The judgment dismissing the case prevents the same exact cause of action from being sued on again. However, case law permits a new action to be filed, based on a new default, that is, the failure to make a payment that occurred after the dismissal. This can be excellent news for the homeowner, because, in some cases, the five-year statute of limitations may have passed, which would mean that the Bank can’t re-file. In most cases, however, that won’t apply, but still, a range of payments will in effect “go away,” and the bank’s second attempt will have to be for a significantly smaller amount. That, my friends, is a... principal reduction!

BOATING SKILLS & SEAMANSHIP THE COURSE that can Perhaps you remember taking driver education classes in high school, and having a parent or older friend teach you how to operate a vehicle safely on the roads, what to do in an emergency, and even how to park a car properly. That training provided us with critical training and skills needed to become even a marginally safe driver, and to pass our driving skills test with the Department of Motor Vehicles. In Florida, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 who operates a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more must pass an approved boater safety course and have in his/her possession photographic identification and a boating safety education identification card issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Over 80% of boaters involved in fatal accidents have no training in boat handling and safety. Any person who has access to a boat can get behind the wheel and drive, and there is no legal requirement that the boat operator have any type of training or boater education. However, the training you need is available at a minimal cost (you pay for the book, which you keep for reference) from the US Coast Guard Auxiliary (USCGA). USCGA “Boating Skills and Seamanship” courses are offered at various locations in the Tampa Bay area. The classes are taught by certified US Coast Guard Auxiliary Trainers at various locations around the Tampa Bay area. When you have completed the course, you will be awarded a formal Certificate of Accomplishment showing that you have successfully completed the course. Many insurance companies provide discounts to boat owners who have completed the course, and will provide you with the requirements of the State for possessing a boating safety identification card. New boaters will find this an excellent way to learn the basics of boating and boating safety, and experienced boaters can use it to hone their skills or as a good refresher course. Again, many insurance companies will provide you with a discount on your boat insurance if you have successfully completed the course. Led by a new Walgreens, Chase Bank, Marriott hotel, and a Publix on the mainland, and a rebuilding of the City’s beach access at Archibald Park, a $10.4 million Municipal Complex “downtown” is breaking ground Friday, March 7, at Noon, with the public invited. A 10-month construction schedule predicts completion in January, 2015.

A greatly expanded, 46,000square-foot Publix is rising in place of the chain’s oldest operating store at the corner of Duhme Road, with a Pharmacy and Liquor Store. Meanwhile the three-year-old elevated Publix in neighboring Treasure Island is enjoying a spike in business from loyal Publix shoppers willing to island hop. More than $1 million in improvements are being made to Archibald Park, including a complete Snack Shack makeover and takeover by a new concessionaire, United Park Services, with a grand reopening planned in the near future. A 90-room Courtyard Marriott will open later this spring on American Legion Drive, north of McDonalds. The March 11 Municipal Election will have the Municipal Complex in focus. Mayor Travis Palladeno seeks a second three-year term. He is opposed

District 2 Commissioner Nancy Hodges is opposed by William Wrigh and District 1 Commissioner Terry Lister was reelected, unopposed. Palladeno and Hodges are both proud of the Commission’s decision to fund the complex; Wright is not opposed but feels officials must be frugal to ensure solvency in the future. Cucaro told the Tampa Bay Times, “The project is a waste that I would try to downsize if elected. With a very shaky economy, it is really a bad idea to put ourselves into a multimillion-dollar project that we don’t need.” The Municipal Complex provides something for every resident. Situated directly on the waterfront, the new complex offers a new vision of integration and social dynamics. The proposed program and master plan is the result of careful analysis,

a multitude of stakeholder meetings with the architect, Wannemacher Jensen Architects, and a strong vision for the City’s future led by City Manager Shane Crawford. Beach, leisure, sports and civic programs rarely coexist in such close proximity. This unique relationship is a great opportunity to create a complex that will attract and serve all generations.
Architect Design Notes Jason Jensen, principal and project architect, told Paradise News, “Hennessy Construction was selected with a separate RFQ request for Qualification than the design team. To date we’ve done 20 projects with Hennessy. Both of our companies have a long history of successful projects in Tampa Bay and specifically Pinellas County. “The 5,100-square-foot Recreation

New City Hall Complex at Night Center is located between the Intracoastal and the new multipurpose ‘event lawn’ and park, so it can host activities such as the crowning of the King of the Beach Tournament, movies at the park and musical events. The new sports fields are designed to attract softball, baseball and soccer tournaments. Small courts are surrounded by park and playground areas that further expand the city’s recreation opportunities. Finally, a walking-friendly waterfront park will invite residents to picnic or walk down the waterfront. “The new City Hall and 8,500square-foot Fire Station anchor the site and become a city square, a gateway into the park. A boardwalk-like experience with a large covered terrace along the Intracoastal echo Madeira
Beach history at Johns Pass. For the Commission chamber, a unique semi-transparent oval space will become an iconic point of reference for the City and a lantern within the park. A large multipurpose room can house everything from card games to wedding receptions. A new City Hall Fitness Center will support the Fire Department, city staff, and the public. It’s a very unique City Hall and municipal complex design that not only supports city business but has amenities that will improve residents’ quality of life. “The existing City Hall will remain in place until the new building is suitable for occupancy. It will then be demolished for a new parking area. The major site issue was soil that had a low bearing capacity that necessitated
a system of piles to be used to support the building, increasing the construction budget. To avoid future flooding, FEMA also requires the new building to be approximately seven feet above the existing building. The design team ensured that the building was easily accessible and that the space below the building could be used to access the water.”
City Management Background “When we first started looking at just a City Hall project,” Mayor Palladeno recalled for Paradise News, “based on FEMA regulations and city codes we could not fix the existing building. Over the past few years we held several public meetings that led to moving forward with an

expanded project to include a new Fire Station & Recreation Center with ballfields designed to attract local and outside tournaments. We did not want to burn our entire healthy reserve on the project, so with bond interest rates very low, we set up a bonding debt services cap of about $300,000 a year.” Finance Director Vincent Tenaglia explained, “The City received $4.485 million from the bond issue and provided $5.9 million in cash from reserves for the project. The City Commission approved the project in the amount of $10,305,308. The original budgeted expenditure increased from $9.9 million to $10.385 million due to poor soil conditions. The $485,000 difference was not drawn from reserves. It was available in the current budget based on budget savings related to the cost of issuing the bonds, and issuing more bonds than originally planned, as a result of favorable market timing.” Mayor Palladeno added, “As the City’s representative on the County Tourism Development Council (TDC), I’m looking forward to using our newly expanded sports facilities. With the new Marriott and other property expansions, we’re creating more bed tax dollars for the County and the more we contribute, the more bed tax dollars we can get back for our City infrastructure projects. Another bonus is Duke Energy’s installation of the City’s first underground utility lines
for the Archibald Park area. “Overall size of the new City Hall is slightly smaller, with about 14,200 square feet, but use of space will be more efficient. The new modernized Fire Station is very important and we’ll be able to create more drained space for a picnic area and small dog park. The Recreation Center at the east end includes a catering kitchen and banquet area, plus an event field for oncerts and more. There were not enough regulation-size fields in the County to attract and keep these important sports events and dollars. Our new regulation ballfields are more Little Leaguefriendly and we’ll be able to host lacrosse, soccer, baseball and softball tournaments. Kevin Smith of the Pinellas County Sports Commission guaranteed Madeira Beach up to 41 events a year.” [A deal is already set for a six-team NCAA Division I women’s softball tournament next February.] City Manager Shane Crawford, who will closely supervise the entire complex construction project, told Paradise News, “The Board had grown tired of ‘kicking the can down the road,’ and their positive action on the Municipal Complex bond issue is the story of a stagnant city becoming alive again. The complex will provide facilities and amenities our citizens have wanted for a long time. “We were painted into a corner by FEMA regulations that made it impossible to
repair the existing City Hall.Couple that with a lack of leadership at City Hall and Board of Commissioner members that were very apprehensive about tackling some high price tag projects, the problem just grew worse and worse. However, good leadership spurs good policy development and this current Board has done an excellent job in accepting their role as policy creators and allowing staff and I to carry out that policy. Although the price tag matches the magnitude of the project, I strongly believe the decision to move forward with the Municipal Complex project was a correct one that will pay many dividends in the future.” Summing up, Mayor Palladeno emphasized, “The City of Madeira Beach has a progressive, vibrant vision that is sure to attract new visitors and residents for years to come. NEW MADEIRA BE ACH CrossBridge Church IS GROWING!
Madeira Beach …is a multifaceted city. Home of John’s Pass, Pinellas County’s top tourist destination, the economy is heavily dependent on seasonal residents and tourists. It is also, however, a real city, with year-round residents that run the gamut from young families to retirees.
The religious needs of Madeira Beach have been faithfully served by the Church by the Sea at 495 137th Avenue Circlee since the end of the end of World War II. A second church, the CrossBridge Church, started November 3, 2012 and now has two Sunday services and a Wednesday evening service at 7 pm. The prior home of Mr. Joe’s Bar and the Jungle Island Bar, very popular nightspots that closed in 2005, the site at 50 153rd Avenue, now has a new crowd. Pastor Rick Cowley and an army of volunteers, working under the watchful eye of Jim Enguita Construction Co., finished the church in record time. Pastor Cowley said that it would not have been possible without the almost daily donations of paint, construction materials, kitchen equipment and professional services. “We were so blessed to have so many people come into our lives that wanted to help and actually do the things that would have taken us weeks if not months to accomplish,” said Pastor Rick. As of February 2, CrossBridge Church meets on Sunday for Contemporary Worship at 8:30 am and 10:30am. A Nursery, with all new rooms, is available for both services, and a Children’s Ministry is available during the later service. A state-of-the art Worship Center and a new kitchen area provide a relaxed
area for coffee and fellowship prior to the two morning services. Pastor Rick and the church family are becoming a vital part of the beach community by participating in, and volunteering for, as many events as possible as a way to give back. In the last year, they have volunteered for Madeira Beach’s sea oat planting and beach clean up, along with the Old Salt King of the Beach, Mad Beach Food Fest and the City of Madeira Beach’s 4th of July Celebration . Pastor Rick serves as Chaplain of the Madeira Beach Fire Department. On March 7, they are honored to be part of the City of Madeira Beach’s Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Municipal Complex and to have the leadership and friendship of our city leaders. The most popular deep sea fishing boats and fishing charters are still operated by Mark Hubbard, whose father, Wilson, founded John’s Pass. These days it brags two national chain restaurants that actually bring visitors to the pass, Hooters, and the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. The Pier Aquarium from downtown St. Petersburg was expected to open here this year. When they were not able to get the financing together and they lost their leas,e another attraction in John’s Pass saw opportunity in the loss. fter our incredible beaches, the top tourist destination in Pinellas County is John’s Pass Village. Its eclectic shops, waterfront attractions and restaurants offer something for everyone. You can ride anything from a paddleboard to a personal watercraft, from a deep-sea fishing charter to a casino cruise. There are at least a dozen places you can eat a great meal, and there’s even a place you can kiss a real live alligator! In spite of the fact that it is hidden away on the second floor, over the John’s Pass Trading Company, Mayor Travis Palladeno and ‘Papa across from the Gator’ Bob Barrett “Wrestle Chompers” main parking lot, The Alligator Attraction is so popular with visiting children that it just expanded to add even more live aquatic creatures, offering interactive experiences that families won’t easily forget. The low price tag of $3 per child, $4 per adult, or group rate of $15 for 5 people helps, since many visitors are still reeling from the cost of visiting Orlando. The four foot “swimmers” were featured on “Good Morning America”, “The Today Show”, and “Fox and Friends”. Their eight foot gator, “Chompers”, was on Animal Planet’s “Tanked” show where the Gator Boys visited and wrestled him. “When the Pier Aquarium deal at John’s Pass fell through, we saw it as an opportunity to expand our attraction and bring even more animals for visitors to enjoy,” said owner Bob Barrett (aka Papa Gator). “We also have a koi fish pond. It took me a month to train the fish to eat from a baby bottle, but now our guests can opt to feed them as it is a unique experience they won’t get anywhere else. We have other reptiles and fish, including a 105-pound. rescued African spur thigh tortoise named Rudolph who seems to love being touched by the children, anywhere but on his head”. The latest additions are the stingrays. Small Cortez stingrays are being acclimated to their own “touch tank”. The Alligator Attraction offers special tours and deals for birthday parties, church and school groups, and summer camps. Guests have the option to feed gators from the ”Golden Gator Bridge”,

hold a small alligator, and take as many photographs as they wish. There is also a gift shop to purchase souvenirs of your experience. If you “Like” them on their Facebook page, they will also print your photos and hang them in the attraction. The Alligator Attraction recently celebrated its expansion with an open house featuring food from Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, which has one of many Florida locations in John’s Pass; wine from Vino Florida; and a visit from Madeira Beach Mayor Travis Palladeno, who got up close and personal with Chompers. Owner Bob Barrett says, “Any mayor willing to wrestle an alligator to increase the city’s tax base has my vote.” In addition to expanding the Attraction, Bob also celebrated the opening of John’s Pass Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor, the Pass’s first ice cream shop featuring indoor seating. They celebrated their opening at the same time that the Attraction expanded, with the Mayor cutting the ribbon. The Spice and Tea Exchange, the ice cream shop’s next door neighbor, one of John’s Pass’s most popular shops, provided door prizes. Attendees also enjoyed samples of some of the Parlor’s 31 delicious flavors of Blue Bell ice cream, which include most of my favorite flavors. Special February flavors were “I Love Chocolate” and “Chocolate Covered Cherries”. Single scoops are just $3.75 and double scoops are only $5.15, plus sales tax. They also sell “retro candy” and snack items, as well as both fountain and bottled drinks. In addition, they serve floats, shakes, and multiple flavors of shaved ice. The Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor is easy to spot, with adults and children taking photos using the wooden, child-size ice cream truck that is out front as a prop. It’s hard to imagine a future trip to John’s Pass without a Blue Bell ice cream cone. It’s my bet that The Alligator Attraction and the Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor are also going to be the most popular stops for preteen birthday celebrations and grandparents looking for a fun time with their grandkids. It’s one of the best kept secrets, but unraveling the mysteries of how Pinellas County works, Pinellas Citizen University (PCU) since 2002 has allowed nearly 500 residents a chance to go behind the scenes and see how the many County services really tick! Offered one or twice a year, this year’s PCU Spring Semester starts April 3, and the 35 available seats were literally filled long before the March 7 cutoff. The program meets 10 Thursday nights, usually from 6:30 to 9:30. Students must be at least 18, with tuition $35 that includes a class shirt, all course materials, graduation ceremony and diploma signed by all County Commissioners. Since its conception in 2002 with the full blessings of the County Commission, the program has been facilitated by Pinellas County Communication staff members. Specialist Len Ciecieznski has been a facilitator of the program since 2004, and while he’s on medical leave, this year Video Specialist Libby Bolling is lead facilitator, assisted by Public Information Specialist Irena Milasinovic. Milasinovic told Paradise News, “PCU is one of the most exciting things to happen in Pinellas County. Never before have we offered our citizens such a detailed and interactive behind-the-scenes look at county government. The program was designed to provide you with meaningful hands-on experiences and dialogue with your government. It just hasn’t been ‘seeing’ that’s made this class the great adventure that it was – ‘it was the doing’! “We have always believed that handson participation is the best way to show the services the county provides. It has been our hope that PCU would provide our citizens with a better understanding of how government works and how the decisions your Board of County Commissioners makes affect your lives every day.
“During this remarkable 10-week course, participants go behind-the-scenes of many Pinellas County operations and talk to the experts as the class explores a wide range of county functions. Students meet and talk with county officials and elected county leaders. December Makes It Official: Pinellas Becomes High-Impact Tourism County A continued trend of record-setting Tourist Development Tax capped a best-ever calendar year and sent Pinellas County past the $30-million mark, making the news of becoming a high-impact tourism county official. A year-over-year increase of 17.4% for December put the month over $2 million for the first time, as well. The large year-over-year increase puts FY13-14 collections more than 13% ahead of last year’s record-setting numbers already a quarter into it, totaling more than $6 million. All signs from January point to continued increases as the high tourism season began in February and continues through March and April.
New York, Chicago & Toronto Focus of Winter Push: OJ Campaign Thrives The first-ever national partnership with Florida’s Natural Orange Juice has seen record consumer participation with more than 300,000 people visiting FloridasNaturalBeaches.com and more than 150,000 entering to win a week-long getaway in the first month. Running simultaneously,Visit St. Pete/Clearwater’s recently launched iNeedSun.com campaign was covered in The New York Times and has seen more than 26,000 entries, so far. In all, the campaign will garner more than 570 million impressions across three markets—-New York, Chicago and Toronto. The two campaigns end and May 31 and April 15 respectively. Website Traffic Up 76% in December; YouTube Views Hit 1 Million VisitStPeteClearwater.com saw massive increases in December traffic with a 76% increase year-over-year, which contributed to another record-setting year of traffic. In all, more than 1.8 million people visited the site in 2013, up 24 % from the previous year.
Help Restore McKay Bay Volunteers needed to help build an oyster shell bar
Tampa Bay Watch is recruiting volunteers to build an oyster shell bar to restore McKay Bay on Thursday, March 6 & Saturday, March 8 from 9 am - noon. McKay Bay is an ecologically-important estuary located in the heart of a heavily industrialized area in Tampa that has provided habitat to over 200 bird species and historically supported healthy fisheries. The project involves shoveling fossilized shell into mesh bags, transporting the bags via boat and placing oyster shell bags on the shoreline to create a series of oyster bars. It is pretty physical labor with oyster shell bags weighing around 30 pounds each. The goal is to restore lost habitat systems to the bay, prevent further erosion of the shoreline and improve water quality through natural biological filtration. Latin American Visitation Up 30%, Efforts Continue VSPC’s first new department in two decades, Latin America Director Ana Fernandez has been busy showcasing St. Pete/Clearwater to the diverse, 500million-person market. In addition to building relationships with corporate partners, travel agents (including home-based ones) and tour operators, Fernandez is also organizing a series of trade and consumer FAMs starting this month. I admitted to Lizette that we had the same problem before her company repaired our doors! - Hot in summer, cold in winter, with high energy bills. I asked “Why does this happen to sliding glass doors?” Lizette described it this way, “Sliding glass doors work as a system, kind of like your spinal column. One thing out of whack affects everything else.
There are numerous ways to start turning the table on the power companies. More efficient appliances can play a part: air conditioning, pool pumps and water heaters in particular. Plasma screens and older refrigerators can be energy eaters. Lighting, too, plays a role, especially the lights you use most often. Sealing leaky ducts and ensuring proper attic ventilation is also very important. We will deal with all of these in upcoming issues. After those are done, solar power on your roof can be a great investment. I know that first hand. Since we live in a moderate climate, the largest portion of most of our power bills come from trying to control temperature and humidity. This issue, we look at weather proofing, one of the lowest cost things we can do to make a serious impact on our bills. If I were a renter, this is something I would do anyway, if I planned to stay there a year or more. After all, I’m paying the power bill. Perhaps the landlord would even share in the effort. It never hurts to ask. By far the biggest place where most of our homes let in the heat and cold from outdoors are the windows and doors that give us our beautiful views of the outdoors. Replacement with new ones is very expensive, even more so here in storm-prone Florida, as regulations now require most of our readers to use impact-resistant models.

“Here’s a simple test anyone can try. Bring the door nearly to a locking position, but leave a crack of light. Step straight back and examine the crack. If the crack is crooked, your door is out of alignment. Misalignment stresses the screws surrounding the glass panels leading to glass/metal separation and air loss due to misaligned weather stripping. “We look carefully at the weather stripping, which is typically worn, brittle or non-existent. An old toothbrush with worn bristles might look OK in your toothbrush holder, but how’s it doing for your teeth? That’s the whole point. A quality, comprehensive approach gives our clients options over replacement, which is not only expensive, but comes with another whole set of serious issues. Over the last 18 months we have received many calls from property managers at very fancy places on the beach with Hurricane Impact Doors.
