What’s New on Corey Avenue In the Pursuit of Excellence When buying jewelry from an independent designer, you are buying more than just an object ... You are buying hundreds of hours of failures and experimentation, days and weeks and months of frustration, and those precious moments of pure joy. You are not just buying a thing; you are buying a piece of the designer’s heart, part of his soul, and a moment of his life. Most importantly, by buying the designer’s jewelry you are allowing the craftsman more time to do the one thing he is passionate about. At Owen Sweet Design we also do expert repair work, watch batteries, restringing, ring sizing, jewelry refurbishing, and replacing lost stones. We are located at 344 Corey Avenue, 727-392-6936. We have a wide selection of belts, wallets, purses, bags and jewelry for men and women. The products are beautiful and eco-conscious works of art. Speaking of art, we boast the original works of an extremely talented and gifted painter. Victor Horvath’s artwork is stunningly beautiful and leaves a lasting impression on one’s soul. Most are natural fabrics, made in the U.S. and Europe, that travel, wash and fit. An outpouring of support from her customers and friends helped Pam decide to partner with her sister, Barb, to create Cottage Casuals. SUNSET BELL DEDICATED 11/26/2014
by Peter Roos ST. PETE BEACH …There’s a new Sunset Bell in Sunset Park at the West end of Corey. The bell, donated by North Beach neighbors Tom and Maria deYampert, was dedicated Oct. 26. St. Pete Beach’s second public sunset bell is a replica of the first, an historic bell at the Paradise Grille in Pass-a-Grille donated by Cleo Robertson. Both have a removable lanyard. Pass-a-Grille has a volunteer caretaker staff with a logbook of bell ringer messages and a Facebook Page Sunset Bell at Pass-a-Grille. Tom deYampert says,“That doesn’t sound like North Beach style,” meaning, no logbook is planned. …The New Sunday Market on Corey has a lot of great vendors, and not enough customers. The Corey Area Business Association (CABA) has drafted market operators Tampa Bay Markets to bring a whole new group of vendors, mostly from Tampa, with many offering products not found at other freshmarkets in the area. There were at least three vendors with Organic produce and free-range eggs; bakeries with Artesian breads; ethnic and other healthy prepared foods; and a food court with chairs and tables set up, right in front of the music. This market needs the support of the residents of our Beach communities to thrive. There are some excellent products, fresher than you would otherwise see, and most produced locally, helping Tampa Bay’s economy. You can get there on foot, by bike, on the Trolley, Free Beach Ride, or take your car. Plenty of parking within a block or two.

More Tidbits
L: Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce celebrating the annual “Flip-Flop-Fling” in October
… Casa Del Pane and Sherwin Williams recently opened new freestanding buildings. Casa Del Pane is a long-time Italian bakery, which for years was almost hidden adjacent to Gigi’s at the entrance to Bella Vista in St. Pete Beach. This summer they relocated to their own building on Gulf Blvd. just north of Waffle House and they have been “discovered.” Their fresh-baked Italian bread is as close to perfection as you are likely to find anywhere. My favorite is the Semolina Bread with sesame seeds. A“Cheers”type of coffee crowd meets Tuesday through Sunday, and the store has an almost cult-like following in the local area. They offer coffee in all its various forms, with freshbaked bread and pastries. The aromas are amazing. … Sherwin Williams just smells new. If you need paint, or any tools to apply paint, stop at the new store on 75th Ave., a block north of the Post Office. You may never go to Home Depot for paint again. Tell them you read about them in Paradise NEWS. Crowder Brothers True Value Hardware seems to be very close to opening their new hardware store in the location of St. Pete Beach’s prior one, on 75th Ave. directly behind the
historic Beach Theatre. New signs on the recently repainted building and True Value semi-trailers with inventory are clues. … The Beach Theatre may also have some news soon, as we have heard (a rumor) that a judge decided it is the property of Mike France’s widow. It was being fought over by claims from his sister and others. The judge’s decision, if factual, would presumably indicate that its status could change from derelict building sooner rather than later. … If you have been living under a rock you may have not heard that St. Pete Beach has picked - Wayne Saunders of Clermont, as its next City Manager. He takes over December 1. … Boulevard Burger & Tap House is now open at 5905 Gulf Boulevard at Gulf Winds Drive. Their first day, Oct. 27, was a busy one. Owner Charles Marco, who also owns Fortunato’s Pizza & Italian Market on Central Ave., between 2nd and 3rd Streets in downtown St. Petersburg, has invested heavily in the property.“It’s a relief to finally be able to start serving, outdoors at least, with this beautiful weather,” he said after a busy first day. The covered patio was

very comfortable, whether at the spacious, outdoor, full liquor bar, or the new, heavy-duty, butcher block-style tables. …On the north side of the same triangle corner, it is good to see a major renovation underway for a Dunkin Donuts & Bressler Ice Cream shop with a drive-through lane. The prior building had originally been a gas station and utilities cost a fortune trying to cool it whenever it was a restaurant. It looks like plenty of thought and investment is being put into it now. … Have you been to see the 35,000-gallon aquarium at the Guy Harvey Resort’s RumFish Grill yet? You can make a reservation for lunch or dinner and request a table near the tank, but there are no guarantees. On the other hand, we have gone for breakfast during the week. We enjoyed a wonderful Scottish Salmon Platter, served with a toasted bagel. There’s enough top quality salmon and fixin’s for two, and we sat right next to the tank. Top it off with a cup of their excellent coffee. There’s a discount program for locals that saves up to 15% at the bar and in the Guy Harvey merchandise shop. Ask your server! … Shells Seafood restaurant is off to a good start across from Waffle House and Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce. Serving dinner every night and lunch also on weekends, they plan to expand lunch to everyday during season. They also offer to-go orders and might even be able to arrange delivery. There are coupons on specially printed menus inside bulk-distributed copies of Paradise NEWS this month, offering free chowder, beverages, or dessert with a $10 purchase. … Congratulations to Ethel Buns, who was named Cultural Ambassador for Keller Williams in North Florida at the top U.S. Realty Company's annual convention in Austin Texas in mid-September.
…The Walgreens St. Pete Beach Classic is a nonprofit organization that exists to conduct the event and raise money for charity. With their sponsor support, the City & YOU, the athletes, the 2014 event was successful enough to donate to the American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, the SPB Recreation Department Mindstorm Team and the One Boston Fund. For the Jan. 6-18, 2015 event, they are focusing efforts to support two major charities: The American Cancer Society and the Children’s Dream Fund. They will also support various youth, fitness and health related efforts in the surrounding community as funds permit.

It is our human nature to dwell on the negative. This is called the “negativity bias,” or the propensity to focus on problems, annoyances, and injustices in our lives rather than focusing on being grateful for the events or people in our lives that are working and we feel good about. Dismiss positive thinking as Pollyanna, New Age, or even as outdated ancient or religious thinking if you like, but there are increasing indications that feeling grateful can have a powerfully positive effect on our lives, health, & psychological and emotional well-being. Research by Jeffrey J. Froh, an assistant professor of psychology at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., has found that adults who feel grateful are more optimistic, report more social satisfaction, experience less envy, less depression and fewer physical complaints. They also sleep better and get more exercise. Kids who experience more gratitude do better in school, set higher goals for themselves, derive more satisfaction from life, friends, family, and school and are generally less materialistic and have more desire to give back. Gratitude can also have a social benefit. In research by Robert Emmons, professor of psychology at University of California at Davis and pioneer in gratitude research, people who were assigned the task of making a daily gratitude list were more likely to report having helped someone with a personal problem or having
offered emotional support to another, relative to those who focused on hassles of life or comparing themselves to others. Convinced? If so, then the next question is: how do we change from our negative habits to that of feeling more regular gratitude? Here is a starter list from Dr. Froh:
1. Keep a gratitude journal – document daily what you feel grateful about. 2. Get a gratitude buddy and talk about what you are grateful for with your buddy. Your buddy can help you make sure you acknowledge where your joy comes from (the difference between bragging and feeling grateful). 3. Pay a gratitude visit to someone who has helped you in the past or write them a letter. 4. Pause mindfully during the day to when something happens that you feel grateful about; make a mental note.
5. Watch your language even when talking to yourself – be mindful of when you are focusing on the negative. 6. Savor the good times with family and friends. Photos, drawings, written accounts and verbally acknowledging and appreciating people and events keeps you focused on the things you feel grateful for. Continued on page 37

Montessori by the Sea School: A Special Community Philosophy Story by Lisa Dower If you’ve ever driven by Hurley Park in Pass-a-Grille, you passed a small school called Montessori by the Sea. Recently, I had an opportunity to sit down with Director Nicole Wilson. I’ve always wondered about the little blue building; who went there and what it was all about. The school looks so idyllic as you sometimes see the children playing by the beach. You are brought back to yesteryear, a forgotten time, when children played outside and walked in their communities as part of their learning. After talking with Nicole, I realized that Montessori by the Sea is much more than a special school; it is a special philosophy and a part of our community. Nicole was brought to Montessori by the Sea in 2009. Her journey began much like other parents, by having her children enrolled. It wasn’t long before she became a volunteer and the five years since has brought her to her current position as Director. “I think a Montessori environment allows children to develop a love of learning,” Wilson says. “Children have the opportunity to dig deeper into subjects, find what they enjoy and explore. One thing that makes Montessori special is that it offers all children a place to learn at a pace that fits where they are developmentally.

Event Director & Montessori parent Karla Hollan says, “This event is all about the community; we are brought together for common goals, to celebrate our past and create our future. Kids can choose from popular face painting to creating traditional gyotaku art, a fish print they can take home. “The teachers prepare the environment that allows children to have the opportunity to explore and learn. For example, when my youngest son Nicholas was four, he had a great desire to learn how to read. In the Montessori classroom, the materials were available to him and there was flexibility and freedom of choice that allowed him to progress at his pace so he didn’t lose interest.” As we walked through and explored the materials, I could see that the Montessori approach was unique. One of the iconic Montessori resources is the famous pink tower. Used in the primary classroom, it is a graduated series of 10 wooden cubes, each decreasing by 1 cubic centimeter. This, along with other equally well-designed materials, becomes the foundation for children to draw on later as they explore and learn more abstract concepts. “We are proud to offer an authentic Montessori program,” Nicole continues. “Our carefully prepared classrooms are filled with materials that provide children an opportunity for hands-on learning, and our staff are Montessori certified and are all committed to Montessori.” The school offers programs as early as three years of age and goes all the way to grade 3 when most are nine years old. , With only 52 children currently and a maximum school enrollment of 60, you could also see how close knit everyone had become. When it comes to the beach, the kids not only use it for recreation, they use it as a learning tool. While each classroom is different, the primary children may go exploring to find shells and items to incorporate into their artwork. When they move on to the elementary classroom, they will explore the same beach, but this time bring the items back to examine under a microscope and research, creating reports and presenting their findings to the rest of the class. This provides students with a hands-on understanding of their ecosystem, how it works, how it survives and what happens to the living things within the environment. Taking advantage of the small community environment, the lower elementary class was also able to take a number of day trips to the local library and the supermarket, using the local trolley. These outings allowed the children to apply their school knowledge in practical ways, utilizing everything from mathematics to purchase trolley tickets and shopping items, to geography as they navigated their community. They also explored meal preparation and nutrition, using the items purchased at the supermarket to make a meal back in class. Another interesting geography project, took the primary kids exploring the neighborhood. There they took pictures and drew diagrams of where they had gone, in the end providing a handmade map of Pass-a-Grille. Of course, the teachers also took advantage of the journey, making a visit to the local Historical Museum and discussing the history of the community. Realistic Property Pricing R EAL BYESTATE JIM BEGGINS The Property Wizard Helps Speed Sales?
CENTURY 21 Beggins Enterprises - Broker
I recently interviewed for the job of selling a very nice beach property. After analyzing its features I submitted five houses now on the market (What buyers can pay now), five sold houses (what buyers did pay) and five expired listings (What buyers refused to pay). The “can pays” averaged $1.2 million, the “did pays” $90,000 and the “refused to pays” $1.2 million. The seller listed with another agent at $1.5 million. That’s $300,000 higher than the average “refused to pays”. Come on folks! That’s like trying to sell a $20 bill for $24 or throwing a Hail Mary pass at the end of a football game. Neither strategy generally ends well. Most real estate companies have comparative pricing tools. Beggins’ exclusive Strategic Pricing Analysis “S.P.A.”, for example, provides sellers the knowledge and confidence to price their property according to their personal motivation. After a short visit to note the properties’ features, agents pick15 properties that are most like the subject property. Sellers can view pictures of most properties online. The “SPA” of 15 comps is free, whether or not you list with them. An informed client has a better outcome with their property sale.
26 | NOVEMBER 2014 | ParadiseNewsFL.com
Sellers can get a sample “SPA” if they’d like. The listing inventory for 16 beach communities has increased slightly for the first time this year ,from 1,048 to 1061 properties for sale. This is down from 2,000+ a year or more in the past. Sales are increasing slightly, with sellers hanging tough and buyers negotiating hard. Does this indicate that prices will rise substantially? I don’t think so. When we are uncertain we tend to do nothing. I predict that after a strong bit of negative economic news, inventory of old, unwanted barrier island houses will greatly increase. This will push prices down. Do some research and plan ahead of the crowd. “When you find yourself on the side of the majority it’s time to pause and reflect” (Mark Twain). Our beaches are beginning a transition into one of the best vacation spots in the world, think Long Boat Key and Naples. Major hotels are seriously looking to replace our worn-out motels. Big money is pouring in from other countries for investment. Newly built shortterm rentals are beginning to replace the illegally rented older properties. Our beach cities are planning renewals of their core areas similar
to the vibrant areas of downtown St. Pete. Our sleepy beach towns are waking up, sprucing up and building up. Many don’t like change, but, like it or not we are in competition for worldwide vacation and second home buyers and investors. With our natural resources protected and our towns cleaned up, we’ll create our own great real estate economy. What will be your part in our potentially unstoppable growth? Stay here if you can but if your property is no longer good for your family, get rid of it…NOW! Contact me or one of our “Property Wizard Team” for further information. GET REAL ABOUT PROPERTY Travels Through Real Estate Law
BY THOMAS A. BRODERSEN, ESQ.
So,What’s Really In that Listing contract Many people hire attorneys to review both listing contracts and purchase and sale agreements before they sign them (and often prefer to have attorneys close the transaction as well). Other people seem perfectly comfortable signing these multi-page documents without even reading them through themselves. They are often told they are “standard” agreements, and seem to assume that they are therefore “safe.” For our part, we real estate lawyers warn that many problems can’t be fully remedied after the agreements have been executed. So, starting first with listing contracts, just what is in those agreements that can come back and hurt the owner? First of all, a listing is the agreement between a property owner and a real estate broker by which that firm is engaged to give their best efforts to find a buyer ready, willing and able to purchase a property on the terms offered (or other terms the seller may ultimately accept). Some of the problems in listing agreements are in four different areas: 1. Many listings provide for binding arbitration
in the case of a disagreement between you and your broker. The problem with arbitration is the concern that the arbitrator may favor the businesses that hire them. In addition, if you disagree with their ruling, there is no appeal. 2. Listing contracts often include language that would, under certain circumstances, leave you liable to pay a full commission even if there is no closing. Most sellers would never expect such an outcome, and I always strike that language. 3. In the event that the seller changes his mind about selling, or just doesn’t think the broker is doing an adequate job, there are often very tough conditions attached to cancellation, again a situation that most sellers would not expect. 4. Some listing agreements also provide that the broker can transfer the listing to another broker should they desire. It seems to me like they should ask you, the seller for permission if they want to do that. To their credit, most real estate brokers work very hard to get your property sold, and are usually successful. But just as good fences make for good neighbors, good contracts make for good professional relationships.

Inshore- Tom McDowell, a Madeira Beach local, reported catching and seeing tons of sheepshead around the John’s Pass bridge. He was using small pieces of shrimp with a 2ot hook and a small split-shot to hold his bait closer to the stricter in the bite zone of these crustacean eaters. Joe Haze, from St. Pete, was catching mackerel and jack crevalle on a silver spoon with 1-ounce weight in front. Larry Johnson, from Pinellas Park, reported catching a monster snook from the north jetty of Johns Pass at sunrise with a Buck Tail jig. He says they were feeding heavily on the white bait just on the inside of the fast moving water. Joe Matte, from Buffalo, NY, was catching nice sized flounder inside the Pass while fishing with dead whitebait on the bottom. Don’s Dock reported that anglers from their docks were catching gags, mangrove snapper and red fish on live green backs and shrimp! The whitebait is thick in our area now, making the lure bite weak, but the fish are hitting the white bait in seconds whether it’s alive or dead. Near shore- The red grouper are still feeding aggressively so they are getting hard to avoid.
However, now that we have had a few fronts, the gags are really coming in for us quickly and pushing some of those red grouper off the ledges. We are getting most of our gags in the 50 to 90foot range but we’re seeing them shallower daily, and this trend will continue while the water cools. November is Captain Mark’s favorite month for gag fishing, but any month ending in ‘ER’ is best for gag grouper. The snapper bite recently has been hot, partially in anticipation of the coming front that will have passed the day before you read this report. Remember, fish feed well up until the front but then shut down till the barometer stabilizes again. Offshore- The last longrange fishing trip at Hubbard’s Marina brought in lots of mangrove snapper. The grouper bite was soft due to the aggressive snapper, but it worked out well with some 10lb mangroves! The kingfish, cobia and blackfin tuna have been coming up while trolling and flat-lining offshore, so don’t forget the pelagic gear and a pitch pole. We are still running into the occasional mahi school offshore but that will end with the barrage of cold fronts until late this coming spring. Above - Captain Mark Hubbard shows off a monster gag grouper caught on a recent overnight trip. Left-Bryan Rexroat and his son Evan with the kingfish from Hubbard's Marina 39- hour trip
Tampa Bay:
Watersports Capital! Story
by STEVE TRAIMAN
The Tampa Bay Area and the West Coast of Florida including the Gulf Beaches is adding to its claim as the “Watersports Capital of the U.S.” The area has been a long-time center of major sailing events including the Morgan Invasion, as well as surfing, windsurfing, paddleboarding and Dragon Boat racing, to mention a few. Two most recent feathers in this cap are the RS:X Youth 2014 World Windsurfing Championships (WWC) October 18-24 off Clearwater Beach — first held in the U.S., and the WPA Paddleboarding Championships October 24-26 off St. Pete Beach with the Sirata Beach Resort as host.

“The St. Pete/Clearwater Sports Commission (SPCSC) helped secure both events,” Director Kevin Smith told Paradise News. “With the assistance of Rob Mirlenbrink, WPA Region 5 President, we reached out to the WPA National Office that we would like to be their East Coast partner and host the 2014 World Championships. With the help of our local Stand-up Paddleboard groups, the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber, the City of St. Pete Beach, and the Sirata Beach Resort the event was secured. With the commitment of WPA our area will host a regional Championship each year we do not host the World Championship occurring every four years. “Looking ahead, the St. Pete/Clearwater area will be hosting the 2015 49er & 49er FX North American Sailing Championship, February 6-9, and the 2016 Olympic Class NACRA 17, 49er and 49er FX World Sailing Championships, February 7-14. With our continuing focus on watersports, our location continues to be an elite area and a perfect match for these types of events.”
First Time for WWC in U.S. The 2014 WWC almost was canceled as it was originally scheduled for Israel. After the Gaza Strip battles erupted, organizers were scrambling for an alternative site. Up stepped Jerome Samson of Clearwater, a Nielsen Research executive and volunteer President of U.S. Windsurfing. While vacationing in Portugal this July, WWC organizers asked for his help. businessman and community activist Frank Chivas, owner of the Salt Rock Grill and Island Way Grill, on the board of the Clearwater Community Sailing Center on Sand Key, and named by the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber as the Frank T. Hurley Tourism Person of the Year this past May. The rest is history. ”This thing happened real fast,” Chivas earlier told the Tampa Bay Times. ”We had two-and-a half months to plan an event that typically takes years to pull together.” The City of Clearwater with its partners Tampa Bay Charities, Clearwater Community Sailing Center, St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission and the Clearwater Yacht Club, came together to host the spectacular event at Pier 60. “I was proud to be a part of this international youth sporting event with nearly 100 18 and younger world-class windsurfers from 20 countries on four continents participating,” Chivas added for Paradise News. “Hosting it in Clearwater turned out to be a fabulous experience for the participants and spectators.” “Windsurfing has been an Olympic sport for 30 years,” Samson said. “The worldwide youth pipeline has never been this strong. We were absolutely delighted to welcome the best young windsurfers in the world to the U.S. This is the birthplace of our sport, and our expectations were fulfilled with a spectacular event!”
First for WPA on East Coast “We were proud to bring the World Paddle Association (WPA) Paddle Championships for their inaugural east coast run,” president Byron Kurt told Paradise News. “The St. Pete/Clearwater Sports Commission was particularly helpful in getting the event here, along with our sponsors, Naked Turtle Rum, Salt Life Apparel, Cigar City Brewing and Hennessey’s Tavern Inc. The Sirata Beach Resort was a great headquarters host for all events. We had more than 250 participants over the four races and five clinics throughout the weekend. Ages ranged from 6 to 74, both males and females from all over the world, including most of the leading point participants.” “The Sirata has welcomed many groups to the resort and hosted more than two dozen athletic events in the past,” Managing Director Gregg Nicklaus told Paradise News. “This group stands out as being some of the most environmentally sensitive, physically fit and well-mannered participants that we have ever seen. The Sirata was proud to have been selected as host venue and we look forward to seeing their event grow over the next few years.’ Clinics with the top athletes and sponsors were held October 23 and 24; Board Demos Thursday through Sunday (23-26); and the championship races on Saturday (25) and Sunday (26). Hundreds of enthusiastic spectators attended the clinics & demos, and enjoyed the races from Gulf Beaches up and down from the Sirata.
Charley Morgan: Still Spry at 85!
Sailing Center for All Tampa Bay and the Gulf Beaches down the West Coast have long been a center of championship sailing competition, as well as a great recreational experience. Each year, the West Florida Yacht Racing Association (www.wfyra.com) organizes the Tampa Bay Area & Florida West Coast Yachting Calendar. The 2014-15 calendar offers hundreds of events, compiled by the St. Petersburg Yacht Club in conjunction with BGYC-Bayshore Gardens Yacht Club, CYC-Clearwater Yacht Club, DIYC-Davis Island Yacht Club, SSS-Sarasota Sailing Squadron, BCYC-Boca Ciega Yacht Club, BKYC-Bird Key Yacht Club, CTYC-Cortez Yacht Club, RPM–Regatta Point Yacht Club, SYC-Sarasota Yacht Club, VYC-Venice Yacht Club, BYC-Bradenton Yacht Club, DBC-Dunedin Boat Club, SPSA–St. Petersburg Sailing Association, TSS-Tampa Sailing Squadron and VSS-Venice Sailing Squadron.
Charley Morgan hasn’t lost any of his zip and enthusiasm for sailing at 85 years young. The innovative local fiberglass yacht designer told Paradise News: “It’s amazing when you look back over the sweep of time how Tampa Bay has remained a major factor in all types of watersports activity. We’ve had sailing World and Western Hemisphere championships as well as the Southern Ocean Racing Conference, among others. “We’ve stayed at the highest levels of achievement with a great watersports community supporting speedboat to sailing competition, with area America’s Cup competitors and Olympic Gold Medal winners. “I’m delighted to be part of reinventing the Morgan Invasion as the centerpiece of the Tampa Bay Hospice Cup. The first two events raised over $80,000 with 97% to the two hospice organizations – thanks to incredible volunteer participation. I’m confident it will remain one of our area’s major events in
The WPA Stand Up Paddle (SUP) Elite Race of the championship did not require qualifying to enter. Salt Life will be giving a $5,000 bonus to the top Men’s (SUP 14’) and $3,000 to the top Female (SUP 12’6) points leaders. The Salt Life Cup (to be announced in April 2015) is an accumulation of points from all WPA Salt Life National Races in the long course and the WPA Paddle Championships. All WPA National races carry double points (2,000 to 1st) from regional WPA races and the WPA Championships is double of the National races (4,000 to 1st). future years. It’s great to see everyone come together for fun and hospice. “A bonus this year was sailing with the two dozen winning auction bidders on my 44-year-old Heritage 12-meter yacht, that I first sailed in the 1970 America’s Cup trials. It was great of the Newport, RI, 12 Meter Charters to donate this wonderful prize. “Next April’s Tampa Bay Hospice Cup will be the 30th anniversary of our Morgan Invasion, and we expect Morgan owners around the Bay Area and aficionados from around the state will come to support the event. One of most civilized things we can do is contribute to growing hospice support across the country and here in Tampa Bay.” Story by Steve Traiman
One of the most celebrated annual events has been the Morgan Invasion, started in 1985 to honor local yacht designer Charley Morgan with racing by Morgan-designed boat owners. In 2013 race organizers teamed up with the Davis Island Yacht Club (DIYC) and made the Morgan invasion the centerpiece of the new Tampa Bay Hospice Cup (TBHC), promising fun competition and a chance to contribute to a worthy cause. “We’ll be ‘sailing for Hospice’ and supporting two very worthy organizations,” Charley noted at the announcement, “Suncoast Hospice (Pinellas County) and LifePath Hospice (Hillsborough County).” (See accompanying Morgan interview story.) The TBHC is open to both Morgan and non-Morgan sailboats. With a strong focus on sailing camaraderie, the event caters to cruising enthusiasts that just want to come out and be part of a fun regatta. In addition to the traditional Morgan Invasion fleets,
the regatta also features open nonMorgan fleets for PHRF, Multi-hulls, and a cruiser-friendly “Just-for-Fun” casual fleet. “We had an excellent debut event in May 2013,” past DIYC Commodore Kevin Fouche noted, “ & an even bigger event this past April. We extended a special thanks to 12 Meter Charters in Newport, RI, for donating the sailing experience of a lifetime. They offered a Heritage Sailing Experience, auctioned at the April 12 benefit dinner. The lucky bidders won the opportunity to sail with Charley Morgan on the boat that he designed, built, and campaigned in the 1970 Americas Cup trials. “We invite all racers and cruisers from the sailing community to support this great cause at our next TBHC Regatta on April 25, 2015, also the 30th running of the Morgan Invasion.”
Dragon Boating on the Map The Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Club was formed in 2005 and was the first established Dragon Boat club in the Tampa Bay area, according to current President Mike Leist. “The TBDBC or as we are more commonly known, the ‘Tampa Blade Runners’, quickly rose through the Dragon Boating ranks to become one of the more competitive teams in the Southeast U.S. Races we participated in this year include the Central Florida Dragon Boat Festival (1st place), Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Festival (Spring and Fall races both 2nd place), and the Orlando Dragon Boat Festival (4th place) in late October.” Tampa held its first Dragon Boat races in 2004 and two years later hosted the national championships. It won its bid for the biennial world races in 2007, becoming just the second U.S. city to host the event. In April 2014, Tampa Bay hosted the 12th annual Tampa Bay International Dragon Boat Festival. In 2015 the 13th annual festival will take place in late April or early May. In August 2011, 2,000 athletes from 17 countries competed for the sport’s top title in the World Dragon Boat Racing Championships with six days of races and other events in downtown Tampa. “Consider them Tampa’s version of the Olympics,” said Kevin Burns, co-founder of the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute, the host committee. “The races cemented Tampa’s reputation as a premier spot for Dragon Boat racing, a sport that until recently was unknown to most locals.”
Photos courtesy of Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Club.
“I’m very pleased at the continuing interest in Dragon Boat racing in Tampa Bay,” Leist added. “We’re an active club and practice year-round, thanks to the great weather we have here. We are looking to grow the sport, and have paddlers at all levels of ability. We also boast the only youth team in the region, and our youth coach will be the U.S. National level youth coach in 2015.” PN

“An OUNCE of Prevention, is worth a POUND of Cure” This famous Benjamin Franklin quote is particularly true when it comes to your sliding glass patio doors. Let’s examine some common concerns so you will know what to look for in your system and understand when corrective action is needed.
CRACK ATTACK: Open your door just a little bit, creating a crack to the outdoors. A narrow crack at the bottom and wider near the top indicates rollers are likely broken and / or misaligned. Lack of alignment affects locks and lets air leak, raising heating and cooling costs.
SEPARATION ANXIETY: Panic-stricken clients call whose door glass has separated from the metal frames. Although serious and dangerous for the glass, it is not the end of the door’s life. Glass door screw systems need reinforcement and the door is out of alignment. Gratitude and Giving Thanks Cont’d from page 14 By Samantha Smithstein, Psy.D. There will be a need for some experimentation as to what works for you (and your family). Some may find that they enjoy reviewing daily gratitude at the dinner table while others can leave a logbook in the living room that can be added to on a regular basis. Others find that meditation can give them an experience of this bliss. Whatever way you find, it may feel strange, artificial, or uncomfortable at first – this is to be expected because of our natural tendency is to be negative. But after some time, our habits will change… and perhaps our life will follow. As we approach the calendar change and New Year’s Resolutions it is certainly something to think about and consider, for adult and child alike. Enjoy your life and be happy. Being happy is of the utmost importance. Success in anything is through happiness. More support of nature comes from being happy. Under all circumstances be happy, even if you have to force it a bit to change some long-standing habits. Just think of any negativity that comes to you as a raindrop falling into the ocean of your bliss. You may not always have an ocean of bliss, but think that way anyway and it will help it come. Doubting is not blissful and does not create happiness. Be happy, healthy, and let all that love flow through your heart. — Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

Rock It RED! St. Petersburg commemorates World AIDS Day December 1 Beginning on November 30, Rock it Red! St. Pete will present a public arts installation and other activities along Central Avenue, and on buildings and monuments through the city. Rock it RED! St. Pete will serve as a memorial to those who passed from HIV and AIDS related illnesses, and build awareness of the continued presence and need for HIV/AIDS testing and treatment. Planned activities include: • Wrapping 170 trees along Central Avenue from 16th to 31st Streets with red fabric for three days; creating a conceptual 1.25 mile-long RED Ribbon in honor of World AIDS Day. • On at least 50 of the 170 trees, visitors will be able to add names, messages or attach small pictures to the wraps. • The wraps will honor Bay Area and Florida loved ones remembered on the AIDS Quilt. • Partners throughout St. Petersburg will turn their structures RED through lighting, balloons, streamers, or other means for the night of December 1. • A candlelight vigil and remembrance program beginning at 7pm will be held at the LGBT Welcome Center, 2227 Central Ave. on December 1. • While the mile-long RED Ribbon will be a temporary art installation, it shall produce a piece of communitycreated folk art as 50 sections where
Founder, artist, and organizer Jim Buresch states,“I still have a voice that I want heard, a vision realized and instead of going insane in the politics of HIV, I decided to use extremely large art installations as my method of activism. I don’t know if you classify it as conceptual or earth, it’s just my voice to me. Art has led many social awakenings; in fact, World AIDS Day started out as “A Day without Art.” “It is estimated that nearly one percent of Americans are HIV positive; however, nearly a quarter of them are not even aware that they carry the virus. Early detection is essential to slowing the potential development of AIDS and AIDS related illness.” The St. Petersburg Arts Alliance is serving as the umbrella organization, collaborating with the St. Petersburg LGBT Welcome Center, the Grand Central District Association, and the United Nations Association – United States of America (UNA-USA) Tampa Bay Chapter. The collaborative is seeking contributions and sponsorships to fund the installation. Donations may be made on the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance website or mailed to100 2nd Ave. North, #150, St. Petersburg, FL 33701. Proceeds will fund the arts installation and support the LGBT Welcome Center and the Arts Alliance programs. Volunteers for the installation, and ambassadors, are needed to assist visitors during the evening. November 2014 Astrology The Full Beaver Moon in Taurus lights up the night sky on the 6th, as it brings the energy of the last two weeks to a climax! With easy aspects, things can be settled in a quiet, transformative fashion while winding down. Mercury, now direct, enters Scorpio again on the 8th and in just a few days will be back to his regular speedy self; whizzing through the zodiac and getting us back on track to move forward with plans and purchases. Mars joins Pluto on the 10th, aspected by the emotional Cancer Moon and unpredictable Uranus. This will prove to be an intense time to say the least, on a personal and worldly level; so prepare accordingly.

YES BRING YOUR PETS (they deserve a vacation at the beach too) and invite friends and family to visit for the day (our only restriction is the parking is limited to one space per room, but offsite parking is available nearby). Enjoy your vacation the way YOU want to because after all, isn’t that what life is all about? Weddings, Renewal of Vows & Memorials on our beach are welcome. We have had more than one happy event here and, in fact, the owners renewed their vows after over 30 years of marriage. Sun Burst Inn is located in Indian Shores, Florida directly on the beautiful beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. Our hotel is within easy reach of shops, restaurants and all you need for a wonderful vacation experience with a regular bus service at your door step if you need it. Our inn has eleven units, all with either kitchenettes or full kitchens, so it’s your choice depending on what you feel you need. All units in our two story beachfront facility are either directly facing the world famous Gulf beaches, or a few steps from the beach.

Getting To & Around the Beaches
s we celebrate the new high rise John’s Pass and recent opening of the new Bayway Bridge, it is fun to recall a little history. When our family first arrived in Treasure Island (TI) in 1961, there was no Howard Frankland carrying Interstate 275 across Tampa Bay . Only the Gandy Bridge, built originally by developer George Gandy as a wooden toll bridge, provided access to the lower part of Pinellas County from Tampa. The main thoroughfare into developing Treasure Island was Central Avenue through St. Petersburg and onto the Treasure Island Causeway. Right of way for the causeway was obtained from the City of St. Petersburg through a swap for 500 feet of beachfront, dedicated to use by the citizens of St. Petersburg. The Pinellas Bayway was in its infancy, and TIA was a relatively small airport, with a surplus Quonset hut as a terminal. The TI Causeway became a toll facility for many years, and the fare in 1961 was 15 cents, or 10 tokens for $1.
A trip along Gulf Boulevard was quite different from what it is today. Almost the entire length was a two-lane road, with poor drainage and scant lighting. The lone exception was a four-lane stretch through Redington Beach, which was fortunate enough to have a member of the State Road Board as a resident. The dredging of Boca Ciega Bay was done by private developers to create the majority of land for Treasure Island, and very few waterfront homes had been constructed. The stretch of motels along the Gulf was known as the Golden Mile. They were he main supporters of the original TI Chamber of Commerce, which won the Governor’s Award for Tourist promotion in 1961. There was no Bilmar... no Treasure Sands...no “high rises” to rival those of today. John’s Pass Bridge was low-level, as were many other bridges of that day. Treasure Island’s beaches were being badly eroded by each passing storm, until beach renourishment was secured in 1968. Our adjacent bays and Gulf teemed with fish, and life seemed more tranquil and serene.

We save money & make a donation to a good cause at the same time.” The TradeWinds Resorts offer their very best room rates in conjunction with the event. Guests can stay at the Guy Harvey Resort for as little as $79 for Friday night. The event’s RSVP deadline is Nov. 17th, so there may still be time to sponsor or attend.
