One of the things we do when we reach our “golden years” is to reflect back over our lives and consider what were the real highlights, and what we might have done differently if we had a chance to do it again. I often think how lucky Renee and I were to have found each other in government class at the Clearwater campus of St. Petersburg Junior College 52 years ago. Renee LaFountain was a Tampa girl, a student and teacher at the Frank Rey Dance Academy, and a star of the Florida Ballet Company. She was a professional entertainer, both locally and in Montreal and the northeast U.S. in the summers. She had taken classes over many summers at June Taylor’s in NYC from Luigi, the “father of jazz,” and from Charles Kelly, who combined gymnastics with ballet to create “acrobatic dancing,” which became Renee’s specialty. She led the Gasparilla parade for years, walking on her hands most of the way. Her mother insisted she be ahead of the Clydesdales from Busch Gardens. She had graduated from Tampa’s Sacred Heart Academy, an all-girls Catholic high school. I was a Canadian who had attended three different high schools and learned that there was somewhere where it did not snow. I had talked my folks into selling everything and starting over in Florida. Dad had bought 40 acres on Lake Tarpon and Highway 19 near Innisbrook to start a campground. I had been helping him with that project, but soon started work at Publix in Tarpon Springs, to earn pocket money for dating. I continued as a grocer throughout my college years. Our son Jordan’s arrival a year after we wed was a real highlight. Switching careers from dance and public accounting to publishing in the early 1980s was also a major turn for us both. An opportunity surfaced, and we responded. That set the stage for a lifetime of working together, blending our diverse talents. We published Office Guide to Tampa Bay in the early 1980’s, then Office Guides to the rest of the state. Moving to the beaches for Jordan to attend Admiral Farragut Academy contributed to all the highlights since. Our publishing efforts focused on our new home starting in 1987, and Paradise NEWS was born in 1995. Another highlight was when Paradise NEWS got an award, and we were pictured on the cover of the Gulfport Gabber as the Greater Gulfport Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year for 2007. Magazine publishers do not often get named in the local newspaper unless they get arrested or they pass away, so it was a highlight when St. Pete Beach got its “new” bragging point and the January 4th, 2011, St. Petersburg Times article on the subject rightfully credited Renee Roos, publisher of the Paradise NEWS, with the idea and its plan for execution. Now it is a thrill each time we pass St. Pete Beach vehicles or see the new signs identifying city parks and facilities, with the bar in blue reading “Sunset Capital of Florida.” Seeing the success of the Corey Sunday Market and the benefits to downtown SPB is also a highlight, since we were instrumental in getting it off the ground. If you go to the market, say “Hi” to Renee, in front of Chill, in her new hobby as “The Tote Bag Lady.” Let her know if you like receiving Paradise News. Buy a tote bag or two. Keep one in each car, so you can cut out or at least cut down on single use plastic bags. Overall, I must say we feel blessed to have made a home and careers for ourselves in the place we have come to call Paradise. People seem to love Paradise NEWS and respond to what they read and see herein. One day someone will call or email to inquire whether we are ready to sell and train our replacements, so Paradise NEWS can continue to improve the lives of residents and visitors for another generation. In the meantime, we continue our efforts to make your favorite news magazine better each issue. Thanks for reading.

St. Pete Beach commissioners unanimously approved the Corey Landing project, a mixed-use residential development planned by South Florida-based Ram Realty Advisors. The approved plans include a seven-story building that will house 243 residential units, along with 5,000 square feet for an indoor/ outdoor restaurant, 8,000 square feet of retail space, and another 4,000 square feet for office/co-work areas. Additionally, plans for the nearly four-acre lot include almost a full acre dedicated to a park running through the center of the development and opening onto the waterfront.

The city has funding for a yard beautification effort that would remove paving from a home’s right of way and replace it with a shade tree and ground cover. Homeowners can apply online. PSTA to purchase 60 electric buses The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) will purchase 60 electric buses over the next five years. The recent release shows an electric bus built by Gillig. PSTA confirmed the initial order was worth 80 million dollars but expects each electric bus to save about $20,000 a year in diesel fuel costs. PSTA targets a “fully green fleet by 2050,” said Brad Miller, CEO. He stressed the decision was helped by the new Biden administration transportation law, “the largest investment public transit has realized in US history.” The federal infrastructure trillion-dollar

TIDBITS which aims to help ex-offenders secure jobs, is proposing a South St. Pete tiny home village dedicated to the workforce. PERC submitted an offer letter to the city to acquire the property at the northwest corner of 18th Ave and 18th St. S, 2034 9th St. S., and 634 22nd Ave. S. to build 32 to 34 tiny homes, said Mike Jalazo, executive director of PERC. The units will be rented to residents earning at or below 80% of the area median income (AMI). Two other developers, Habitat for Humanity and Namaste, also submitted proposals. In separate news, Habitat for Humanity got a half a billion dollars from Mackenzie Scott nationally. The local group’s share is $11 million, the largest ever by 10-fold.

Our cover star, Fo’ Cheezy Twisted Meltz, is not the first Tampa Bay restaurant to make a mark here, then expand in Florida and beyond. Most notable in St. Pete is Leroy Selmons’ steakhouse and ribs, sadly no longer with us. Other Florida chains that are homegrown include Burger King (Jacksonville 1953), Sonny’s BBQ (Gainesville 1968), Red Lobster (Lakeland 1968), Olive Garden (Orlando 1982) and Rib City Grill (Ft. Myers 1989).

In Tampa Bay, Bloomin’ Brands’ opened Fleming’s, Outback Steakhouse (South Tampa 1988), Carabba’s Italian Grill, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar and Aussie Grill and acquired Bonefish from owners Tim Curci and Chris Parker whose first location in St. Pete in 2000 offered casual fine dining and crafted seasonal cocktails before it was trendy. Of course, the greatest dining story locally is Hooters, which launched circa 1983 in Clearwater when six businessmen with no restaurant experience whatsoever got together to open a place they couldn’t get kicked out of. True story. More than three decades later, the Hooters brand has grown into an international sensation, with more than 420 Hooters in 29 countries. The servers are still beautiful and the subject of admiration in the annual Hooters calendar.

Columbia Restaurant is a Tampa Bay icon with seven locations, with the best sangria and tapas in town, as well as the famed 1905 salad owned and operated by five generations for more than 115 years. The Columbia’s legendary salad is tossed tableside featuring crisp lettuce with julienne of baked ham, natural Swiss cheese, tomato, olives, grated Romano cheese, Lea & Perrins® Worcestershire sauce and their famous garlic dressing (also for sale).

Other locals with multiple locations include Bella Brava, Pacific Counter, Kahwa, Sea Hags, Grace Restaurant (Two Graces), VIP Mexican, Datz, The Melting Pot and Gigi’s Italian Restaurant, to name a few. One of my go-to spots is the Spanish delight Bulla Gastrobar, the brainchild of Carlos Centurion who launched in Coral Gables, moved to Miami and then to Tampa, Atlanta, Charlotte and other locations. No wonder Paradise is such a popular spot to test out a future franchised restaurant concept, as we continue to evolve into an eaters’ wonderland.

Many local restaurants and coffeehouses are following in the Tampa Bay tradition of launching a fab concept and expanding to other places, especially Caddy’s and Crabby Bill’s. Ciccio Restaurant Group’s Cali restaurants have grown from Tampa to Brandon and St. Pete with more to come.

Fo’Cheezy - A Home-Melted Success Story By Peter Roos Craig Munroe was just settling into his third St. Pete Beach location for his pizza company “A Slice of New York,” when he told me he was going to shut it down and join Robert Hesse in a new fast food concept. They were going to start with a brand-new, state-of-the-art food truck, followed by a brick & mortar restaurant, with the end goal being a National Franchise Program! They reserved April 2020 for their launch way before anyone had heard of COVID. The Fo’Cheezy philosophy is to “create chef-inspired comfort food,” and “bring home-cooked classics to life in an all-new way, as an experience, not just a meal.” At first glance, Fo’Cheezy may not seem like it aligns with your New Year’s resolution to finally get healthy. But celebrity chef Robert Hesse, who lost 455 pounds after three heart attacks, has ensured that there are healthier options, such as soups and salads, for people looking for a lighter fare. Fo’Cheezy opened the second brick and mortar location in October of 2021 at 111 3rd St. N in downtown St. Petersburg thanks to the popularity of the food truck, which started serving just as COVID hit, and the success of the first location at 6305 14

Gulf Blvd. in St. Pete Beach. They were proud to say that the company “remained debt-free throughout Covid” and afforded them the ability to open a 2nd location. Hip-hop and R&B music from the 1980s and ’90s sets the tone for the era of urban culture and the nostalgia it brings. Customers are greeted by a shiny, custom low rider bicycle hanging from the ceiling as they walk into the dining area. Gold-spoked rims and tires and a model of a front bumper from a 1964 Impala adorn the wall above the menu board, a combination that any fan of west coast hip-hop is sure to recognize. For interior decoration, larger-than-life murals are the star of the show. Tampa Bay muralist Matt Kress spent two months creating mural portraits of rap icons like Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Method Man and Slick Rick. The duo envisions their artisan grilled cheese as a form of graffiti. Kress captured that idea in his artwork. Fo’Cheezy’s menu features 13 artisan melts encompassing an innovative combination of fresh ingredients. The “Mac N’ Rib” for example combines sharp cheddar cheese, barbecue pulled pork shoulder, smoked bacon, Fo’Cheezy macaroni and cheese, crispy onions, and honey drunk barbeque sauce. Sides include artisan tater tots that also feature inventive ingredient combinations. There are also soups and salads, hand-spun shakes, and “sweet thangs,” or desserts.

A native of St. Petersburg, Hesse has spoken about his rough up bringing and knack for finding trouble. Hesse credits the culinary arts for turning his life around – specifically chefs like the late Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsey. Hesse was a fan-favorite during his two seasons on the hit T.V. show Hell’s Kitchen. Training under Chef Ramsey is an invaluable experience for an up-and-coming chef, so to pay tribute, they handed out free orders of Ramsey’s famous beef wellington, which they turned into a melt, to the first 50 people through the doors on opening night. Chef Hesse has also made multiple appearances on the Food Network, served as a private chef to several celebrities, and enjoyed a stint as an event chef at the Playboy Mansion. Hesse would then return to his hometown where he began to create gourmet grilled cheese with a street edge on the actual streets of St. Petersburg with their new Fo’Cheezy food truck. The new downtown storefront location for Fo’Cheezy Twisted Meltz offers artisan-style, gourmet grilled cheese with a “street edge.” This location held its grand opening much to the delight of a loyal fan base who swear by Fo’Cheezy’s gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches. By 5pm, a diverse group of about 20 men, women and children stood in a line on 3rd Street North in downtown St. Petersburg to be among the first to see the inside of Fo’Cheezy’s new location. The family at the front of the line got there at 4pm, and several people made the trip from St. Pete Beach – the site of the first restaurant – to try out the newest iteration of what began as a food truck. Around 20 loyal fans lined up to be the first inside of the new Fo’Cheezy location.

Hesse and Munroe personally manned the grill on opening night, which stretched from 5pm until 4am. Located just around the block from Jannus Live and MacDintons, Fo’Cheezy’s rich, gooey melts are a popular treat for the late-night crowds. Hesse and Munroe briefly addressed the crowd before welcoming them inside, and in addition to stating what an honor the moment was, he made sure to note that 2% of all proceeds go to benefit the Fo’Cheezy charity – No Kid 86’ed. The term refers to an item no longer available in the restaurant industry.“While we do good, we want to make sure others do good,” is a company motto. “The numbers have been amazing all of us. I’ve been in the restaurant business for a very long time, and the sales and gross profit are exciting, particularly considering the pandemic,” said Chef Craig Munroe.”We are at the point in our business plan when we planned to begin selling franchises, so we have been forging ahead. Trust Your Gut

Our guts are sometimes called our sixth sense or second brain. We get physical or emotional messages such as: don’t go, or this doesn’t feel right. We may feel a sense of unease. Haven’t you experienced it? We all have. Do you listen or ignore it? Have friends told you stories of how they averted a bad situation or relationship, because they listened to their gut? Trusting your gut challenges what you may otherwise think. Listening and acting upon gut instinct requires trust in the physical or emotional signs your body is sending you, instead of facts you typically and logically rely upon when making decisions. Have you ever disregarded your gut instinct and regretted it, physically or emotionally? A sudden clear “out of the blue” thought, tension in the body, a flash of coldness, goosebumps, butterflies or nausea, that sinking feeling in your stomach or repeated uneasy thoughts about a person or situation

may be your gut trying to talk to you. These signals may be a whisper or a scream. Without question, there is a connection between our brain and our gut. Have you experienced physical distress, such as a stomach ache or nausea when you are under stress or in a situation you’d rather not be in? This could be a work or social environment, a relationship, or an upcoming event. Many gut instincts are in fact based on subconscious observation and prior personal experience. Others simply can’t be explained. Do you listen? If not, begin to practice what your body is telling you. You can hone your intuition by becoming aware of all the signals your body gives you. Practice paying attention. From a health perspective, many of my clients ignored the small warning signs that something was wrong. Your pre-diabetes has become diabetes; your unexplained weight loss was in fact the early manifestation of a potential chronic illness; the small pains are an undiagnosed injury, or your unmanaged stress has manifested as a skin rash. A healthy gut is critical to one’s overall health. If you are not digesting, you are not assimilating whatever food or supplements

Join USF in the Fight Against Alzheimer’s Disease The University of South

Florida PACT (Preventing Alzheimer’s with Cognitive Training) study needs healthy volunteers to join the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. The study focuses on using computerized brain training exercises with the hope to reduce dementia risk. If you or a loved one are interested in more information, please visit the PACT study website, www.pactstudy.org or call 727-873-4090. The USF PACT team is looking for 3,000 healthy volunteers to combat the growing incidence of dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease. PACT is currently enrolling adults aged 65 and older with no signs of cognitive impairment, dementia, or neurological disorders. Once accepted into the study, participants will begin their exercises at a PACT site in St. Petersburg, Tampa, Winter Haven, or Lakeland. Past research shows that computerized training can help maintain mental and physical function. Healthy older adults who were prescribed 10 sessions of such training had a 29% lower risk of

dementia after 10 years. Those completing additional training benefited even more: they were 48% less likely to show signs of dementia 10 years later. African Americans and Hispanics are especially encouraged to enroll in PACT, as they are nearly twice as likely to suffer from dementia. Local governments are invited to join the Tampa Bay Regional Resiliency Coalition, coordinated by the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council. (TBRPC) The TBRPC is comprised of members from Pinellas, Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, and Pasco counties.

“To date, more than 32 local governments have adopted the Memorandum of Understanding, which defines that the Coalition will develop the Regional Resiliency Plan to address sea level rise, climate change and resiliency. Member cities include Bradenton, Bradenton Beach, Clearwater, Coalition members accept $500,000 government grant at 2020 Summit The Coalition also includes the Dunedin, Gulfport, Holmes 21 municipalities that come together to discuss complex regional Beach, Indian Rocks Beach, Indian Shores, Largo, Longboat Key, issues; develop strategic regional responses for resolving them; Madeira Beach, New Port Richey, Oldsmar, Palmetto, Pinellas and build consensus for setting and accomplishing regional goals. REGIONAL RESILIENCY ACTION PLAN

The Tampa Bay Resiliency Coalition Memorandum of Understanding tasks members with developing a Regional Resiliency Action Plan (RRAP). The memorandum states that the Plan “shall include strategies for coordinated regional preparation for and adaption to a rapidly changing global environment based on mapping of projected sea-level rise and resulting amplification of localized impacts of hurricanes and tropical storms, and which shall identify funding strategies at the local, state and federal levels for mitigation and adaptation actions to deal with those impacts.” The Regional Resiliency Action Plan will include strategies and actions that are based on sound science and technical data. The planning team will work together to identify experts for guidance and will use the regional recognized sea-level rise projections as produced by the Tampa Bay Climate Science Advisory Panel to assess sea-level rise vulnerability, inform planning efforts, and provide guidance on what sea-level rise projections should be incorporated into local planning efforts. The Regional Resiliency Action Plan process will recognize the importance of involvement by all members of the community. 28

The Coalition members will engage and involve local businesses, organizations, associations, and individuals in developing policies and recommendations which will have the support and commitment of community members and organizations. Community involvement is essential for successful implementation. Emphasis for the plan was reinforced by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ recent appointment of Dr. Wesley Brooks to serve as the state’s next Chief Resiliency Officer. The CRO is a role that will see Brooks act as an intermediary between local and state agencies in the ongoing fight to make Florida more resilient to climate change. In 2022, the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council is pioneering a new initiative called Resilient Ready Tampa Bay. The project is led by the TBRPC and made possible by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s (FDEP) Resilient Florida Program. The city of Tampa is the FDEP grant coordinator on behalf of the TBRPC. Two local governments in the Tampa Bay region, in addition to the city of Tampa, will be selected to participate in the project and receive technical engineering analysis/design services at no cost. Through an interactive design charrette, local government staff and the Resilient Ready Team will develop flood mitigation designs and cost-benefit information that can be used by local governments to apply for state and federal grants. The project began this January and runs through June. The Study Area Selection Application is now available for local governments to apply with a specific flood area. KEEP ST. PETE LIT celebrates and promotes greater St. Petersburg’s literary community – past, present and future – through arts, education and events with a literary twist. Based in The Factory St. Pete, founder Maureen McDole was born in St. Petersburg, a direct descendant of carnies, carpenters and fishermen who always loved to write. Her first book of poems, Exploring My Options, came out in 2006. Her second poetry book, Longing for the Deep End, was released in December 2011. Maureen’s third collection of poems entitled Feast came out in early 2021 from St. Petersburg Press. She has a BA in English Literature from USFSt. Petersburg and a certificate in Arts & Culture Strategy from University of Pennsylvania. Fraud, Fraud, FRAUD! It’s part of the tragedy of our times that you can no longer assume that you are being given true, reliable information in so many situations.

The forgery would be discovered, and no foreclosure would ever get filed, because such a sloppy lender would find themselves paying your attorneys’ fees for their trouble. The damage to their reputation would be quite unpleasant, too.

One can argue that it starts in the media, where so many advertising messages are aimed at consumers in order to convince them to spend their money on worthless products and services. The one that is bugging me right now is the issue of “title theft.” There are shows that run all night on cable, frightening people for no good reason. The pitch is that anyone can record a deed against your home, and that somehow, if you don’t catch it, you may end up on the street. This is foolish. Yes, anyone can record a deed saying anything. But can they really follow up by getting a mortgage on your home? These unscrupulous advertisers know that lenders do title searches, and the identity of the person they would give many thousands of their dollars to as a result would certainly be verified before any funds passed. Suppose the lender is careless enough not to do their due diligence, and

they give hundreds of thousands of dollars to a stranger, based on a mortgage on your home. When the first payment comes due and is not paid, what happens? You might think a mortgage foreclosure would be swiftly filed, and you’d be dragged into court, at which time you’d be in deep, deep trouble. Well, no. First of all, the due diligence they should have done would finally take place, and the lender would discover they’ve been had. My youngest sister lives in Sarasota. Typically, we Schwartz girls have met halfway at the outlet mall in Ellenton, where we can indulge our family’s favorite pastime, shopping. Sometimes Boyfriend, who lives in Englewood, will join in. But last weekend was different. Boyfriend wanted to meet for lunch to bid my visiting middle sister and brother-in-law farewell before they left for their home in England. Woody’s Water Roo, just steps away from the mall on the Manatee River, fit the bill. (Meanwhile, Little Sis and her spouse bounced around the mosh pit at the Innings Festival in Tampa.) A balloon archway greeted us as we entered the tiki-roofed venue. Soon we found a table right on the dock with an umbrella that kept all of us comfortably in the shade.

Soon the lunch crowd began to pile in, including families on pontoon boats and couples on jet skis and docking at our feet. At 1pm Tropical Avenue hit the bandstand with a rousing rendition of “Superstition.”

While I munched a blackened tilefish sandwich (tender and flaky), Boyfriend embarked on the Grouper Roo-Ben (amazing), and Bro-in-Law chowed down on the Key West rice bowl (sweet and sour delight). Sis sipped iced tea and enjoyed us enjoying ourselves.

Iced coffee wasn’t on the menu, but our server brought us his homemade concoction: a creamy caffeinated brew which he said was coffee and ice cream mix. Yum!

With prescription drugs, fertilizer, poisons and weed killers showing up in oceans and drinking water, it is up to all of us coastal residents to limit our use of poisonous chemicals and to find other ways to sustain our gardens, lawns, and landscapes. There are other ways to control weeds.

Holistic Approach to Weed Control Last month we introduced a natural pest control method, using food grade Diatomaceous Earth to control ants, fleas and roaches. (March 2022 page 57). We can also make another dent in the poisons used in our yards. I have been seeing landscapers with backpack sprayers

The best method is to pull weeds out by hand including the roots. If they are out of control, you can pull the biggest ones and spray the rest with a non-polluting spray of vinegar, Dawn dish soap, and, if you want nothing to grow there, salt.

If the sprayer has any metal parts, clean and spray clear water before storage to prevent rusting of metal parts from the acidic vinegar. You should see the difference in a day or two. Feel free to reapply. There is also a tool made to torch weeds using a can of propane as fuel. If you are tempted to try this flame thrower approach, be very careful to avoid starting fires. Raking dead leaves away from the live weeds is a good first step. We use the tank from our barbeque, which we move around the yard bungeed to a hand truck to avoid any heavy lifting.

A gallon of vinegar, a teaspoon of dish soap and a cup of salt (table or Epsom) makes an effective method of weed control. If you want other things to grow there, skip the salt. You can get stronger vinegar (up to 45% industrial strength), which is way more effective than household strength (5%). You can spray the weeds using the same sprayer you would have used for the poison.

Call me anything but late to dinner. In the spirit of our adventures together, Boyfriend and I are taking our relationship to the next level. But as we approach our platinum years, we don’t have time to spare on a long courtship. As we prepare to “set up housekeeping” (as my Eastern European grandmother would have put it), we’ve been debating how to refer to each other. I’m perfectly happy to be Boyfriend’s girlfriend, but he thinks these honorifics lack gravitas. In my sister’s long-term relationship, they are each other’s partners. That’s been common terminology in England, where they live, for years. Here in the States, however, it tends to connote a same-sex or business relationship. Lots of American couples choose “significant other.” But my old friend and colleague Amy Gahran cautions against this. “Significance can look a lot of different ways,” says the Boulder-based author of Stepping Off the Relationship Escalator. “Any kind of relationship can be deeply significant.” Significance is not limited to the important people in one’s life either. PET HEALTH However, there are a number of instances where the infection can hide in the body for years without the pet showing symptoms and cause kidney failure, blood protein loss, high blood pressure, lethargy, inappetence, vomiting and even death. This syndrome is called Lyme nephritis and can go undetected until it is too late.

Spring is right around the corner and many of you will be traveling back up north for the summer. While here in the St. Pete area we don’t have many ticks, it is very important to be aware of the dangers that ticks pose to our pets. Travel into wildlife areas, wooded areas, tall grassy fields, or areas that have endemic tick populations increase the risk of exposure significantly. Springtime and warm weather brings an uptick in the tick population as they awaken from their dormant states and start breeding. These ticks, depending on the type, carry a variety of tick-borne diseases that are generally classified as rickettsial disease. The most well-known rickettsial disease is Lyme’s disease (Borrellia borgdoferi). Symptoms of Lyme’s can include fever, lethargy, or lameness/ limping; or pets with acute cases may show no symptoms at all. In some “quiet” Lyme’s cases, pets can fight off the infection completely, causing an exposure but no clinical disease.

Another of these diseases is erhlichia. Classically with acute infections, patients may have a fever, bleeding disorders by attaching to the patient’s platelets, respiratory distress, severe organ damage, possible central nervous system inflammation and possible death. Like Lyme’s disease, erhlichiosis can be “quiet” or sub-clinical and the pet may be able to fight it off completely. However, the disease may hide in the body and can cause a glomerulonephropathy, which is a kidney condition the can cause kidney damage, high blood pressure, blood protein loss, lethargy, inappetence, vomiting and even death similar to Lyme nephritis. There are also other less common rickettsial diseases such as anaplasma and Rocky Mountain spotted fever that should not be taken lightly. The commonality here is that all of these diseases are spread by ticks and cannot be transmitted or communicated without them. Detection is very important and has been made readily accessible through yearly testing during your pet’s annual wellness checks. At Island Life Animal Hospital, we use Idexx 4DX Plus testing for our patients’ yearly heartworm testing. It not only

This is important because if there is detectable exposure to these diseases then we can make the determination to treat based on the patient’s history in order to help prevent subclinical infections and issues later in life. Additional testing is often necessary to determine the clinical significance of a positive result and can help determine if there are current issues arising from the infection. Luckily with the advent of isoxazoline flea and tick preventions we can reduce the possibility of transmission of these diseases, even if your pet is bitten by a tick. These preventions often kill the tick within 6-8 hours or less preventing the tick from being able to inject the rickettsial bacteria into the pet. These diseases typically require the tick to feed on the pet for 24 hours or longer to move the bacteria from the hind gut to the mouth parts. Examples of these preventions are Nexgard, Simparica, Simparica Trio, and Bravecto. Make sure your pets are up to date on their annual visits to your veterinarian and ask if they perform annual tick borne disease testing. Always use heart worm prevention and paired with flea and tick prevention, your pet will be protected against tick-borne diseases. American Stage has named Erica Sutherlin its new director of community engagement. Sutherlin will work closely with every department at American Stage to engage and unite different organizations, people, and students as the theatre heads into its 45th year. American Stage Theatre has operated as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) providing live theatrical productions as a professional regional equity theatre since 1977.

Meet A Local Mushroom Farmer

Born and raised in Cuba, Reysa earned a degree in microbiology from the University of Havana. Graduating in 1988, she worked in a plant biology research center. In 1992, Reysa’s husband took the journey to the US. In 1993, Reysa had to leave her position in order to meet the requirements to immigrate to the U.S. Reysa had a 2-year-old daughter and it took eight years for her to reunite with her husband in Miami. Reysa immediately went to work as a pharmacy tech. After 9/11 when the pharmacy closed, Reysa came to Tampa, where she liked the atmosphere and the Cuban heritage. She found employment with a compounding pharmacy, researching, and preparing items not yet available on the market. She got her national certification in compounding pharmacy, and she was in charge of sterile preparations such as eye drops, injections, and topical products. A health scare led Reysa to start reading and researching a lot about healthy trends for the body. Tired of the 8-5 routine and wanting to do something meaningful, Reysa’s research led her to the benefits of mushrooms, which she decided to cultivate and market. She gathered the equipment needed and turned her backyard shed into a lab. She built a small temperature & humidity controlled green house, and added 24/7 music to the greenhouse utilizing specific frequencies to keep the mushrooms happy. Due to the physical nature of growing and being a one-woman operation Reysa decided to keep her line small and simple. Each mushroom variety requires different methods of care and so she decided not to spread herself too thin and specialize. She wanted to educate the public on the benefits of these “fabulous fungi” and opted out of the offers from many restaurants that wanted her to grow for them. She joined the Dunedin Downtown Market in August 2019 and the Corey Sunday Market in October 2019. Reysa is still at the markets today with her Sun Rey Mushrooms, supplying Oyster (Pink, Golden or Blue), Lions Mane, Reishi and Turkey Tail Mushrooms, both fresh and dried. Our judgements are the primary thing that separates us from the awareness of our oneness with all of Life. Florida blesses us with a year-around climate that encourages growth of just about anything planted in the ground. With a plentitude of rain and a plethora of sunny days, there is a preponderance of green showing up everywhere. As I sat peacefully in my meditation garden this morning, I drew my eyes to some weeds that were popping up among the rocks surrounding my beautiful statuary. My first inclination was to pull them out because I didn’t want weeds to encroach upon and spoil the “perfectly

groomed sacred space” I had dedicated to my meditation practices. Thankfully, before I could act, that ever-present, quiet voice within gently whispered, “Be still and know, this too is sacred.” So I sat with the weeds and invited them to be my teacher. What was it I could learn about myself and life from the intrusion of a few errant weeds in my meditation garden? Emerson was on to something when he said that “A weed is a plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered.” Point taken; perspective is everything. In an instant, what, one moment earlier, I perceived as an inconvenient, unsightly nuisance, instantly became another opportunity to practice reverence. Reverence is the act of seeing through the form and recognizing and honoring the Life Force at its center, as well as its circumference. In my work as a spiritual mentor, people often ask if there is a “fast track” to living a balanced, fulfilling spiritual life. Easy-peasy: Seeing the sacred in a weed can be a

The ego thrives on fear and separation by labeling everything and everyone as good or bad, desirable or undesirable, right or wrong, and so on. It’s easy enough to transcend our judgments with those people we love, like, and respect. However, it can be a bit more challenging with certain others, especially if they hold core values and beliefs that differ from our own.
