The Pearl Tablecloth

In the Arts News section of your Nov. 2014 edition (compiled by Sarah Meitz), I came across a listing about a Surdna Foundation Request for proposals to partially fund ‘activist art projects.’ On behalf of local artist Maria Saraceno and the 50 women who have taken part in ‘The Pearl Tablecloth’ project over the last 10 years, we were able to quickly respond and meet the Nov. 12 deadline. The Surdna awards won’t be made until April 2015, but we wouldn’t have even known about this opportunity had it not been for its brief listing in PARADISE NEWS. The Pearl Tablecloth is an activist art project that evolved from Maria’s desire to create a community out of strangers working through a common creative process. The project started on a nondescript street corner in Pass A Grille where Maria cooked for passers-by. Those who joined her at the table were asked to create and “pearl” a design on material cut from Maria’s mother’s heirloom dish towels. Over 300 patches have been created and attached to a backing made from Maria’s mother’s linen sheets. The Tablecloth is 10 feet in diameter and weighs 75 lbs. Over 168,800 decorative pearls have been used in its creation as well as 8,700 feet of durable thread. Upon its completion, we want to use the grant money to allow us to take The Tablecloth on the road to share through panels and artist’s presentations how strangers became friends and formed a meaningful community by partaking in an activist art project. Thank you for alerting us to the Surdna Foundation RFP through your ongoing support of the creative arts. A picture of The Tablecloth is attached. Andi McDonald, St Pete Beach

Paradise NEWS

From the Publishers...

PUBLISHER & EDITOR

In this season of Thanksgiving and Gifting, Paradise NEWS takes a peek at some of the local organizations who are dedicated to giving thanks and gifting all year long. Our feature story, “Paying it Forward” begins on page 29. We remain ever thankful for our role as the communications department for our barrier island communities, and for the opportunity to introduce our friends and neighbors to the plethora of wonderful businesses and experiences available to us in this little corner of the world we call “Paradise”. People we meet who have lived in the Caribbean say that is also a Paradise, but that one eventually get’s ‘island fever’, which results in a longing for the things left behind on the mainland. We have been told over and over that the barrier islands of Pinellas have it all. We enjoy the relaxed island lifestyle, with an easy access to the mainland and all of the evolving cultural experiences of a growing major metropolitan area. Miss those traffic jams you used to spend your ‘rush hours” stuck in? Get up early some weekday morning and head for downtown Tampa. You will remember soon enough what made the beach look so good. Those who truly embrace the island lifestyle actually prefer to seldom, if ever, leave the island. That is another element of “Paradise”. We have so many shops and services available nearby that we seldom “have” to go to the mainland for anything, and when we do, it is usually not far away. In these days of Google, Ebay, and the plethora of internet shopping sites, if we cannot get a specific item on our island, a nearby island or a nearby mainland community, we can typically get it delivered to our doorsteps, sometimes the next day, often without a delivery charge. That is living in ‘Paradise’. We have a world class airport, at least three cultural centers and an amphitheatre, as well as world class shopping, less than an hour away. Sports teams, our own, and others who train in our area are here for the entertainment of sports fans. Bowl games, the Final Four, and international competitions add to the variety. Our moderate climate allows for outdoor festivals, concerts, and a wide scope of plays in the parks and events on our beaches at times of the year when many of our country’s residents are shoveling their driveways. Too often we allow ourselves to become distracted, disappointed or discouraged by situations beyond our control. That can happen just by reading the morning newspaper listening to the wrong radio station or by watching the wrong program on the television. We can also be led astray just by conversing with negative people we live near or run into. You could become a hermit and cut yourself off from neighbors and news reports, but I do not recommend this course of action. We can instead spread the positivity that comes from owning and displaying a ‘Giving Heart’ and an ‘attitude of gratitude.’ Simply remembering how blessed we are to live where we do, to have plenty of food, to be free to think and live the way we want, when we could have been stuck in a much less pleasant environment, should put us in the right frame of mind. Between now and the beginning of 2015, try to find yourself a reason to pat yourself on the back for something you did to help someone less fortunate. If someone does something nice for you, try to find an opportunity to “pay it forward”. Getting an unsolicited and unexpected gift, even just an honest compliment, is a treasure that does not happen often enough in most of our lives. I can tell you from personal experience that it is at least equally rewarding to be the giver as the receiver.

Have a Wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy, Healthy New Year! Peter & Renee & the Gang that tirelessly bring you the News from Paradise.

Re-VOLTing

by Peter A. Roos

Averaging almost 300 miles per gallon, I’ll put our new car up against any other in the world for fuel efficiency. We have been producing our own electrical power for over two years, with 10 kilowatts of solar panels (650 sf) on the roof of our beach house. When the engine froze on our classic Mercedes coupe in the summer of 2013, we had an excess of 1,250 kilowatt hours (about a months worth of use) in our Progress Energy account. When we learned that the utility would pay us for excess power on January 1 at only 20% of what it costs, we seriously started looking at electric cars. We loved the idea of driving on solar power, but did not want to be limited by the battery. What car(s) at the time could be plugged in, yet run on fossil fuel if necessary?

Believe it or not, there was only one. The Chevrolet Volt. There were already plenty of hybrids on the market, Toyota Prius being the most established. Other than the cost for a new battery after 7 or so years, Prius drivers were very satisfied with their cars. Dealers were touting a new “plug-in option” for 2014. Still, it cost $10,000 for the privilege and estimated only 14 miles on battery, compared to the Volt’s 40 miles. That made me feel a lot better about the Volt’s $40,000 price tag. (Lowered to $35,000 in 2014) When comparing to non-electric models, there’s also a $7,500 federal tax credit to consider.

2014 CHEVY

Quite a change from the 2nd or 3rd hand German cars we’d been used to driving, the Volt was the first brand new car we’ve called our own in 40 years. We were impressed by its advanced array of efficiency, technology and safety features. • Lithium-ion battery with rechargeable energy storage system • Award-winning Voltec® electric drive plus a 1.4L gas-powered range extender • 7-inch LCD instrumentation with Driver Information Center • Chevrolet MyLink™ with 7-inch diagonal color touch-screen • StabiliTrak® Electronic Stability Control System • Keyless Access with PushButton Start • Remote vehicle starter system • OnStar® Directions & Connections for 3 years • OnStar RemoteLink™ Key Fob Services mobile app for five years • SiriusXM Satellite Radio with three trial months • Four-wheel ABS • 8 air bags The test drive proved the car was extremely quiet, had plenty of pep, excellent handling & responsiveness, and the feeling of driving without burning fossil fuel somehow felt like it lifted the burden of our “carbon footprint” right off of our shoulders. We decided to lease, for 39 months

at 10,000 miles per year paying $2K down and 39 - $353 monthly payments. It came with a 100% bumperto-bumper warranty for 36 months, and 100,000 mile warranty on the battery and drive train. In 17 months, we have driven it 12,000 miles and burned less than 40 gallons of ethanol-free, high-test gasoline. The car switches flawlessly from battery power to gasoline generator after about 40 miles when the battery reaches half it’s capacity. It has not had to visit the dealer even once. According to the car itself, we still have 31% of the oil life remaining. While General Motors is under fire for the ignition switch fiasco on many of its other models, so far, we feel they need to be commended on the great job they have done on the design & assembly of this fun, economical Eco-smart green car. We are sure we’ll see many more on the road in the future. I get asked quite a bit how the Volt affects the electric bill. The answer is less than $2 for 40 miles. So, if you drain the battery every day, it could add maximum of $60, plus taxes to a monthly power bill to take you 1,200 miles a month without visiting a gas station. Does Your German Car Need a Good Repair Shop? by Peter A. Roos

For the past three decades we’ve driven Mercedes automobiles. We’ve never had a new one, enjoying the luxury, safety and performance after the original owners were tired of them. We generally bought them with 100,000 miles and traded at around 200,000. The downside of this system, of course, is the maintenance. German manufacturers are proud of their engineering marvels and have a maintenance program prescribed, which, if followed, keeps their cars at the peak of their performance. Finding a professional repair shop that can help you to do that without going broke is often the challenge. Potter’s Precision Imports opened this summer at 6625 35th Street, in Pinellas Park. Tom Potter had been a service writer at the local Mercedes dealer, just a few blocks away for years. He began working at Precision Motor Cars (Now Mercedes-Benz of Tampa) in 1995. Through ongoing certifications and trainings Mercedes Benz centers in Houston, TX and Jacksonville, Tom became ASE Master Technician, Mercedes-Benz Master Technician, Mercedes-Benz Master Service Advisor and until recently, one of two AMG Specialists while at Crown Mercedes, just a few blocks southeast of the new shop. The cozy twin rack shop is well equipped for Mercedes, BMW, VW/Audi and Porsche repairs, and is kept spotless. Tom Says “We are here to provide exceptional customer service! We provide the correct maintenance and repair for your Mercedes-Benz vehicle and will save you money. We service all Mercedes-Benz vehicles (except Sprinter). We honor aftermarket extended warranties. Keep your 4-year or 50,000 mile MB full warranty intact as we use the proper service procedures and products, but you save by not paying dealer prices!”

It wasn’t long after opening that Tom needed to hire his first full-time mechanic. With all the friends he has made so far in his career there were many to choose from. Steve Johnson had been a mentor in his early days as a mechanic. A natural born mechanic with many years of Eurocar experience, Steve says. “I love the older german cars as much or more than the new ones. I’m equally comfortable working on a ‘70’s or ‘80’s classic as I am with the 2014 models. After 14 years running a shop in Tampa, Steve is happy just to be turning wrenches these days. “Tom is a great guy with all of the talent to be very successful running his own shop. I feel priveledged to be senior mechanic here.” What’s really important, is what Tom’s customers say about him and Potter’s Precision Automotive. Their Facebook & Google page references are especially impressive for a new shop: Some excerpts apear as highlights to the right. If your German car needs a new doctor or you just need a second opinion before saying yes to an expensive repair, call Tom. You will not regret it.

Don’t trash the Holidays!

Rekindle the spirit of the season while reducing holiday trash

The holidays are a season for giving but we often end up giving too much to the landfill. Holiday gift wrap, cardboard and party goods add up to truckloads of extra garbage. Start your own “reduce, reuse and recycle” traditions to trim holiday waste. Green holiday tips: • Give an eco-friendly present such as a gift card, zoo pass, event ticket or fishing license instead of items that will ultimately be thrown away. • Give the gift of time, such as a lunch invitation or a picnic at the beach. • Bring your own reusable bag, or skip the bag, when you shop for the holidays. • Look for recycled content when buying items such as greeting cards. • Consider buying items with less packaging. • Make room for new items by collecting clothes, toys or household items to donate to charity. • Buy rechargeable batteries, instead of disposable, for electronic holiday gifts. • Reuse holiday wrappings such as gift bags, ribbons and bows. • Reuse packing materials such as boxes or plastic peanuts. • Set up a recycling bin for cans and bottles if you host a holiday party. • Entertain with reusable dishes, silverware and cloth napkins instead of disposable items. • Replace incandescent Christmas lights with energy-efficient LED lights. • Recycle cardboard and holiday papers (used gift wrap, tissue paper or greeting cards) with “mixed paper” at curbside or drop-off. For a list of local recycling programs, visit www.pinellascounty.org/recycle. • Find a new home for usable items that have been replaced by visiting our A to Z Guide at www.pinellascounty.org/utilities/getridofit. • Recycle your Christmas tree. Most cities in Pinellas County collect trees for recycling either at curbside or drop-off sites. For information about Christmas tree recycling in Pinellas County visit http://www.pinellas county.org/utilities/getridofit/xmas_tree_recycling.pdf More information about Pinellas County services and programs, visit www.pinellascounty.org, with LiveChat, or create a shortcut to www.pinellascounty.org/mobile on any smartphone. St. Pete Beach Deli & Produce Offers ‘Real Food’ at Great Prices

Odise Armata is one of the hardest working people I know. Affectionately known to most as “Odi”, the owner -proprietor of St. Pete Beach Produce & Deli has accomplished a lot since opening a small produce store 5 years ago. He moved across the street from the PCI Resort at 6335 Gulf Blvd. and expanded into a popular deli, sandwich and salad shop with a reputation for the best gyro and Greek salads in town. He has since flown back to Albania and married Mirela. The couple’s son is almost a year old. Odi has a good selection of Boars Head meats and cheeses priced about $2 a pound under the grocery store prices. He has widened his selection of imported foods, olive oil, feta cheese, olives, bottled beers and wines, local honey & homemade desserts, some of which are made with love by Mirela, including rice pudding and apple pie. One of the things the Deli does superbly is salads. Next to the Boars Head case is a case of salsas, hummus, salads,

dressings, mostly made from the store’s locally sourced farm-fresh produce at the peak of their ripeness and available by the pound. Fresh house-made beet salad, tabouli, potato salad, homemade Spanikopita Tzatziki, Dolmades, stuffed peppers and the best Quinoa salad you’ve ever tried, to mention just a few. While you are waiting for your order, try a sample of anything you’d like from the salad case. Odi said he’s happy to give samples of any of his salads to anyone that asks. “It’s my gift to the residents of the barrier islands” he said. “If you like them, it’s a gift you’ll appreciate all year.” The store is more Deli than produce these days, but the market fresh produce is the basis of their success. It’s in all the salads,

sandwiches and the delicious & affordable party platters. Pablo makes the bests salsa and salads fresh every day or two. They use only the finest fresh ingredients. ”I would never buy lemon juice when I can juice a fresh lemon.” says Odi. They are happy to handle caterings as well. “We have clients as far away as a mainland St Petersburg Hospital that brings us in monthly to serve 80+ staff members. Stop in when you are hungry and order a sandwich, wrap or salad from their great menu. If you are throwing a party from tailgate to wedding reception, include platters from St. Pete Beach Produce and Deli. The vegetarians will love you. Anyone watching their diets will also love you. Steve Pletcher eats here or takes out daily. “I used to be addicted to the Italian sandwich. Now I love a soup and Quinoa salad.” You can also order in advance by finding the menu online at www.SpbProduceAndDeli.com and calling 727-564-0101. Gift certificates are also available.

GET REAL ABOUT PROPERTY Travels Through Real Estate Law

BY THOMAS A. BRODERSEN, ESQ.

GET READY FOR COURT Buying and selling real estate is much more complicated than many people seem to realize. They routinely sign sales contracts without reading them. They sign listing agreements which they don’t fully understand. Fortunately, most of the time things just seem to work out, and the rule of the playground is “no harm, no foul.” But realize that it doesn’t always go that way. The problem is, you can’t tell until you are far into a transaction that it is going to crash and burn, and you may find yourself seeking justice in Court. I always urge my clients to take copious notes as they go through any major transaction (which buying and selling real estate always is). Save every piece of paper, in chronological order. Keep notes of every conversation, in person or otherwise. Being in command of the facts at all times not only puts you in the best possible position should you have to litigate, but it also gives you an advantage in all of your negotiations. People can tell if you are the master of the facts, and they change their behavior when you are.

They are on their best behavior when you are most prepared.

B ENTLEY D E N IGHT INDEPENDENT INSURANCE SERVICES 6524 1st Ave. N., St. Petersburg. FL 33710-8404 (O) 727-344-4500 • (F) 727-302-0208 bdinsurance@yahoo.com Business • Auto • Home • Commercial • Flood Umbrellas • Boat • Motorcycle • RV

Of course, most controversies eventually settle, and that is a very good thing. As Robert Louis Stevenson said, “Compromise is the best and cheapest lawyer!” But still, you don’t know if you can settle a problem until you have. What about when you can’t? That’s what I call “Once upon a time” time… That’s the time when you go into Court, stand before the Judge and say (in effect) “Your Honor, once upon a time…” and you lay out your case. Your lawyer may not choose to use every single detail, but the entire history of the transaction is the raw material of “Once upon a time” time. You must be prepared to describe each and every event in a long series of negotiations, correspondence and documents, and he who is the master of the facts oftentimes wins. It’s a lot of work, and some lawyers avoid going to Court, because of the effort required, and the uncertainty. Trial lawyers like us, however, are quite comfortable going to Court. Bring on the facts!

FH I SHI’ MNG R EPORT :

Steve Miller, from Maryland, reported that the redfish, sheepshead and flounder were the popular fish the past few days he had been fishing from the Jetty. He caught some small flounder, three monster sheepshead, and two nice redfish. The redfish loved the larger live shrimp on the bottom. The sheepshead were taking smaller bits of shrimp near the pilings. Mr. Miller reported that when fishing for sheepshead he was also getting mangrove snapper and pinfish biting. MikeButterick, a St. Petersburg local, also reported catching a beautiful redfish with live shrimp from the beach just north of the Jetty. Tom Leone, from Leroy New York, caught a beautiful bonnet head shark from the South jetty of Johns Pass. We also saw some great bonnetheads, hammerheads and blacktips caught around Johns pass on Instagram this week as well. Don’s Dock reported seeing anglers haul in lots of redfish this past week. This is a dramatic increase over last few weeks Don’s Dock owner Jason reported. He also said they were biting shrimp there as well.

Near shore- The grey snapper have been doing well near shore on our 5 and 10 hour fishing trips. The red grouper have been voracious and hard to avoid, even though they are considered ‘endangered’. The gag bite has been great between fronts when we have had great weather to get offshore. They are biting best the days leading up to these large cold fronts. The kingfish and mackerel are getting to be fewer and further between but were still picking at them in the offshore waters. Offshore- Our last 39 hour was a bit rough but we ended up with a nice catch, and our experienced long range anglers were unaffected. We brought home a large pile of fat mangrove snapper. The largest mangrove snapper was 9lbs but the boat came in with over 200 of these yummy snapper. We also wrangled in a monster 38lb kingfish while flat-lining large live bait during our non-stop bottom fishing action. Our experienced guests also wrestled in 6 monster gag grouper! Unfortunately we had some giant amberjack that were caught, but had to be released since they were closed down. They were so plentiful and aggressive it was tough to get our live baits past them to the gags down on the bottom structure.

Pay It Forward! Story by STEVE TRAIMAN

For this holiday season, with so many local families and servicemen and women in need of assistance, local Gulf Beaches and Pinellas County groups are doing their part to make the season a bit happier for many in the area. Among the local projects that can use your continuing help are the Gulf Beaches Kiwanis Miracle League through a Shell’s Restaurant fundraiser, St. Pete Beach Support Our Troops and Silas Dent’s fundraiser, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office “Ride and Run With The Stars,” and the first Gulfport Community Christmas Party, among others.

PCSO “Ride & Run with the Stars” “Since 1993, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office “Ride and Run With The Stars” has given hope and help to needy children and families,”According to Sheriff Bob Gualtieri. “We have formed productive partnerships with generous community sponsors, without whom ‘Ride and Run With The Stars’ would not have been successful. Thanks to you, we have been able to meet the needs of hundreds of families and thousands of children during the holidays and year round, raising more than $500,000 in donations and proceeds for children and families the past 20 years. “Ride & Run With The Stars” will be held on Saturday, December 6, at beautiful Fort De Soto Park. Participants enjoy cycling, running, and walking events, as well as a visit from Santa Claus, food, and a climbing wall. The funds raised through sponsorships and registrations support the Sheriff’s Christmas Sharing Project. PCSO agency members use the proceeds to shop for deserving families and then personally deliver the holiday packages of food, clothing and children’s toys.

The PCSO invites you to become part of our effort. Thank you for your consideration and support of “Ride and Run With The Stars” and the Sheriff’s Christmas Sharing Project. Your generosity will go a long way towards making the holidays happy for the less fortunate in our community. Site: All events start and finish at The Fort picnic area. Cost: The registration fee for all participants is $35 per person. The fee includes a long-sleeve logo T-shirt, food and giveaways. There is one free child’s t-shirt with each registered adult while supplies last. Grand Prizes: High quality bicycles. SPB Support our Troops The very successful SPB Support Our Troops, Inc., had its origins when former Mayor Mike Finnerty met Marlene Clausen, Councilwoman for Indian Shores, at a Big C meeting shortly after Finnerty was elected to the District 1 Commissioner seat. She announced at that meeting she had started a group of volunteers that were sending care packages to troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait and asked if anyone else would be interested in helping her with this program. One of the most impressive things about her program was that she had concentrated her efforts on gathering names and addresses of men and women serving our country from our local municipalities. Also, having been a Vietnam combat veteran, he remembered how great he felt when he received packages from “back home” while serving in Vietnam. Soon after he was elected Mayor, he brought the idea of setting up a donation box in City Hall to the Commission and it was thoroughly supported. He made the announcement to the citizens of St. Pete Beach in June 2006 and committed to picking up donations each week and delivering them to Indian Shores City Hall. When the program outgrew that location, City Manager Mike Bonfield found room in SPB City Hall for donation collection and packing. One of the city’s residents, Millard

Gambel, offered to generously donate a substantial amount of money to the program for postage, as did citizens and American Legion Post 305. It was then that St. Pete Beach Support Our Troops was begun in St. Pete Beach. In early 2009, Terri Finnerty incorporated the program as a non-profit with the state of Florida, under the name SPB Support Our Troops, Inc. and on March 23rd the program was granted 501 (c)(3) tax exempt status by the Treasury Department. In May 2011, Mayor Finnerty realized the space at City Hall was not sufficient to keep the program moving forward. It was also becoming difficult for volunteers to shop for the program and haul 80- 90 bags of groceries up 3 flights of stairs. Another issue hindering the program was that hours of operation were limited from 8am-4:30pm Monday through Friday. He contacted St. Alban’s Episcopal Church on 85th Avenue and asked if they had space to house the program. They did and two weeks later the program was moved to an extremely large room at the Church with access 24 hours a day. “This was everything needed to keep the program going and making it easier on the volunteers,”Terri told Paradise News.“These are our regulars who always show up to help sort and pack no matter what: Terri and Mike Finnerty, Maureen Carr, Barbara and Terri Wiktor, Diana Simpson, John and Dee Bell. To date we have sent almost 3,600 packages to our troops

Maureen Carr, Barbara and Terri Wiktor, Diana Simpson, John and Dee Bell. To date we have sent almost 3,600 packages to our troops “In addition to regular donations, we get fundraising assistance from local businesses. This year, Rob and Debbie Stambaugh of Silas Dent’s in SPB are involved.” “Since giving up our Christmas food baskets project several years ago, this year we’re working with SPB Support Our Troops,” Debbie told Paradise News.“Our holiday program will start Thanksgiving week and run to New Year’s. We ask our guests to make a $5.00 donation to our ‘Support Our Troops’ organization, which is added to their food and beverage bill. The restaurant matches each donation. Once the guest makes the donation, we give them a Christmas card so they can write a personal message to our military stationed overseas. The cards and donations are then given to Support our Troops. The cards are included in the ‘goodies boxes’ and the cash is used for the postage to mail the boxes.” “The residents of St. Pete Beach are committed to continuing this program until the last of our brave men and women return home safe and sound. Please see the document on the city website that lists items to donate to fill boxes. Also, financial donations may be sent to: SPB Support Our Troops, Inc., 330 85th Ave., St. Pete Beach, FL 33706.” Please contact Terri Finnerty by calling 727-641-2314 to request a receipt for tax exempt purposes, or to volunteer to help pack boxes. You may also contact her by email at spbsot@gmail.com and visit on facebook.com - search SPB Support Our Troops.

Gulf Beaches Miracle League The Kiwanis Club of Gulf Beaches Miracle League had its modest start in January 2005.“Some of our members saw a program on HBO ‘Real Sports’ about the Miracle League,” George Stone recalled.“We thought that this was project that we should jump on. “With a sizable donation from Southeast Leasing in Pasco County and a grant from Pinellas County we started construction at the Azalea Little League complex in the fall of 2005. A Miracle League field is an all rubber field made from old rubber tires with the base lines painted on so any child would not trip and fall. “On Saturday, March 26, 2006, we officially opened our first season. Matt Silverman, President of the Tampa Bay Rays, threw out the first ball. At that time Miracle League had only 50 fields nationwide. Since then it has grown to over 250 fields internationally with fields in Canada, Puerto Rico and Australia.

“The rules are very simple. Every Inning each child gets a base hit, runs the bases and scores. If there are 10 kids per team, the score would be 10-0 after each half inning. At the end of the game the score would be 30 to 30. Everybody wins, with hundreds of local kids enjoying the program in the past eight years.” Stone noted that many local businesses have held fundraisers for the miracle League, with the new Shell’s Seafood Restaurant in St. Pete Beach helping this year. Owner John Christen told Paradise News,“We were talking and one of our bartenders had the idea to do a local charity event, involving our patrons and our vendors to raise as much as possible. “Richard Thobe, a good friend and very active in the local Kiwanis Club, talked to us about the children of Pinellas and how they sponsored the MIracle League and a swimming program, with 100% of everything they raise going to the charities. “On Saturday, December 6, from Noon to close at 11 pm, all our bartenders are donating their tips, and we’re working with Southern Wine and Johnson Brothers to donate their proceeds that day. We’re getting free promotion on DBS Radio’s WQIK (Q105 FM) “Bobby Rich & Mason Dixon Show,” with Bobby at our event. All diners will be asked to contribute and we’re doing our best to get people to come out and help raise a decent amount of money for a good cause.”

Gulfport Community Party Newest local event is the first annual Community Christmas Party sponsored by the Gulfport Community Players, Saturday, December 6, 6 pm at the Back Door Theater, 1619 49th Street South. “We’re putting together a night of sparkling entertainment, food and libations,” GCP President Eileen Navarro told Paradise News,“with 100% of the proceeds to the Gulfport Community Police ‘Operation Santa’ that for 23 years has been helping local kids in need have a Merry Christmas.”

Included in the $20 admission is a one-act play,“ A Modern Day Mr. Scrooge;” a delightful musical skit; a “Holiday Happy Hour” featuring heavy hors d’oeuvres, soft drinks and a cash bar (beer and wine). Also included are raffle tickets for some great items donated by generous Gulfport businesses and Chamber members, and the opportunity for photos with Santa. The Party is perfect for small office holiday celebrations. Contact the Players by email at GulfportCommunityPlayers@yahoo.com with how many in your party, and special reserved seating will be set up for your group. Tickets are available exclusively at the Beach Bazaar. Other donations for the raffle are also welcome. For your convenience, you can buy your ticket from the volunteer who stops by to pick up your donation item.

It has felt like winter for most of our Full Cold Moon in Gemini on the 6th puts a spotlight on communication and our everyday thoughts. Short trips and travel plans are brought to our attention, too; as we make holiday plans. Our nights are the longest of the year now as our last month of 2014 closes in. Venus, love and money planet visits practical, conservative, but status conscious Capricorn on the 10th and promises to temper holiday spending with caution and quality over quantity. Communication planet Mercury speeding along in Sagittarius will enter Capricorn, on the 16th too. Serious thoughts settle us down and trips are planned with savings in mind. The 21st is a big day in the cosmos as Uranus, planet of awakening and unpredictability, stations direct; making a stressful aspect to the great transformer planet Pluto. This is not the first time that this pair has squared off. Over the last few years we have seen more and more awareness and the need for transformations to take place in the world; and in our own lives as well. This energy will assure us that another level is reached. On December 21st the Winter Solstice occurs as the Sun enters Capricorn. The first day of winter also happens to have a New Moon cycle beginning on the same day! This new lunar cycle taking us into 2015 promises action and ambition to reach those new years goals! Scorpios will be celebrating on the 23rd, as karmic taskmaster Saturn leaves their sign after a 2 year stay. This heavy duty planet moves on to Sagittarius where it will be asking for paybacks and giving rewards to our optimistic world travelers.

December 2014 Astrology SAGITTARIUS: Partnerships take the spotlight; you are accommodating and make adjustments easily. New moon wants you to set a new plan for income based on current values. Saturn brings rewards and restrictions.

GEMINI: Your partner has been in the spotlight; but now you take center stage. Express your true self. Relationships are tested; some will need to end. A rebirth is in order for you; in both the physical and spiritual sense.

CAPRICORN: Focus on work and health matters keep you busy; changes are necessary and letting go begins. A new lunar cycle puts you in the driver’s seat, with all the charm and motivation needed to reach any goal!

CANCER: Work has kept you busy. It is time to get away to rest and reflect. Hidden things are revealed. A new path for relationships begins with intensity and unexpected options. Wellness needs to be a priority.

AQUARIUS: Your energy is highest now with endurance for staying power. Romantic matters or concerns with children may surface. A new lunar cycle brings up private matters; reflection. Meditate on future goals.

LEO: You have focused on fun and enjoyment with a spotlight falling on social invitations and friendly gettogethers. A new direction for work and health matters with a needed transformation starts off your New Year!

PISCES: Career has been your focus; but home and family takes your full attention this month. You have reached a summit in life; rewards and debts are settled. New focus falls on hopes and dreams for the future; friends.

VIRGO: Home and family have had many pleasant and serious moments; but the full moon falls on career. Modifications in the workplace are likely. A new energy pours into romantic relationships and time with children.

ARIES: You have had the travel bug; but now are busy closer to home. Communication reveals much. It is time to get serious about education. A new moon cycle falls on career path with plenty of activity and new focus.

LIBRA: You are restless and on the go most everyday; but the full moon gives you a yearning for far away. Energy is focused into creative and romantic pursuits. New cycle transforms family matters and home life.

TAURUS: Financial matters are highlighted with changes in income; values. It is time to let go of old patterns and clear out negative thoughts. A new way of life is unfolding before you and taking you into the New Year.

SCORPIO: Income and financial matters are in the spotlight for you. A new level of energy in the home can make progress or conflict. A new cycle of transformation takes place in communication and everyday interactions.

Still Spraying Insecticide Inside Your Home? by Peter A. Roos If you were offered a safer, more convenient, less expensive, guaranteed method of protecting your home and family against Florida pests, would you be interested? Until very recently our pest control service came monthly and walked through our home spraying chemicals on our walls, floors, windows, doors and thresholds, under our sinks and behind our toilets. They always said it was safe for us and our pets, but I often wondered. The monthly appointment was sometimes inconvenient and we were not always home when they came by. Our service was missed that month and sometimes bugs began to show up before the next visit. That was before I met Jim Swayne, who recently launched ‘Safer Home Services, promising a guaranteed “Once a Year Pest Control Service”. Jim says “most pest control companies still use 1930's technology, openly spraying pesticides inside peoples homes. We don’t do that!” Jim had built a similar service for ‘Sears’ some years ago. Seeing technological innovations that made the service even more foolproof today, Jim partnered with a renowned Florida entomologist and set out to equip technicians with the best tools and technology available. Their business plan is to ‘Guarantee’ their customers will not be bothered by bugs for a full year after Safer Home Services has done their first annual treatment and their goal is not to be called back until it is time to retreat. What’s it cost? “Safer Home Services technicians spend more time for their annual visit than 12 monthly service calls” says Jim, “but it costs only a fraction of what most people pay annually for their monthly service, and ‘Satisfaction is Guaranteed’.

Technologies Safer Home Services is committed to using the latest technology and scientific insights to battle pests and termites – while using only the best pet and family-friendly products to lock bugs out of your home.Wherever possible, they use naturally occurring and reduced risk (though still cutting-edge) materials. The Safer Home Services mantis has always been green.

• Multidose Bait Gun • Safer Home Services’ Crack & Crevice Injection System • Microgranule Applicator • Hand Duster - With these four tools, baits can be placed where they will work all year, behind switch plates and around plumbing pipes. • Tactical Flashlight and • Pocket Microscope • Hepa Vacuum • Outside Duster • Green Compressed Air Sprayer — For Outside Use Only • KM AntPro Sentinel Perimeter Baiting System • TermaTrac T3i • Termidor HE "A great example of how new technology can help home owners and business owners is our TermaTrac T3i Termite Detector. The TermaTrac T3i is an amazing device that uses radar, thermal, and moisture monitoring to detect termites. So your Safer Home Service technician can “look” behind walls and into furniture and fixtures to confirm whether termites are active or dead," shared Jim. Visit www.saferhomeservices.com for details about the company’s technology, why Once A Year Service and Termite Protection makes sense, and why you should consider choosing Safer Home Services as your pest control partners. For fastest interaction, call 727-800-2992, or email Jim@saferhomeservices.com and please tell them you read about them in Paradise NEWS.

So what kind of technology are we talking about? Just a partial list of the equipment that each Safer Home Services technician brings to every job follows:

Welcome to…

SUN BURST INN WHO WE ARE & WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT!! Families & pets are always welcome! We want you to relax and enjoy your stay with us. Michael & Marilyn Grimes, the owners, live on the property and oversee day to day operations. They have many years of management experience and you can be assured of old fashioned friendly and accommodating service, the real Florida kind! YES BRING YOUR PETS (they deserve a vacation at the beach too) and invite friends and family to visit for the day (our only restriction is the parking is limited to one space per room, but offsite parking is available nearby). Enjoy your vacation the way YOU want to because after all, isn’t that what life is all about? Weddings, Renewal of Vows & Memorials on our beach are welcome. We have had more than one happy event here and, in fact, the owners renewed their vows after over 30 years of marriage. Sun Burst Inn is located in Indian Shores, Florida directly on the beautiful beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. Our hotel is within easy reach of shops, restaurants and all you need for a wonderful vacation experience with a regular bus service at your door step if you need it. Our inn has eleven units, all with either kitchenettes or full kitchens, so it’s your choice depending on what you feel you need. All units in our two story beachfront facility are either directly facing the world famous Gulf beaches, or a few steps from the beach. Enjoy “Old Florida” at its best, the way it used to be, quaint hotels, and friendly owners BUT with all the modern conveniences; that’s what you’ll get when you visit The Sun Burst Inn. Pristine white beaches, softly splashing Gulf waters, and spectacular sunsets all just steps out your room’s door. Visit us soon and find out what the “real” and “friendly” Florida is all about! Old Florida quaint & quiet with NO resort fees, fancy lounges, parking garages, valets, or fitness rooms! Just the gorgeous Gulf of Mexico steps from your room with the smells and sounds to lull you to sleep. Experience the local bars, restaurants and shops.
