The Woman’s Club took their centennial photo November 8th and held a gala Nov. 18th at the Sirata Beach Resort. ST PETE BEACH
Outer Banks Boil Company Now Steams Seafood To Order
They were our cover story last November, just months after they opened at Dolphin Village Shopping Center in St. Pete Beach, the only Florida branch of a small but iconic North Carolina company. Until recently they were selling a cook it yourself pot of seafood, corn, potatoes and spices, or catering parties. The company took a big step forward recently as they added a steamer and can now offer some of the best seafood in town, ready to eat wherever you wish. “This adds another huge dimension to our brand. With our delicious sides and dessert, people can take the entire meal to go. We even have our popular North Carolina barbe que for landlubbers. If they want something we don’t offer, Publix
is in the plaza. We still love our caterings though,” says Logan Berlin, managing partner of the local franchise. 4615 Gulf Blvd #111, St. Pete Beach. Open 11am-7pm daily, 727-357-2645

More recently at Billy’s then Chill, where Carl celebrated hitting 65 with a restaurant and bar packed with fans singing Happy Birthday Carl. Carl’s best friend for the past 35 years wrote recently asking us to let everyone know that their next chance to sing along with Carl will be in heaven.

GULFPORT
The Pearl re-opens in Gulfport
The pride of Treasure Island, The Pearl, an “upscale yet casual” Mediterranean restau rant, that serves a sophisticated seafood-focused and prime meats menu alongside wine & specialty drinks, is now the pride of Gulfport. Chef Karim and Catherine’s restaurant moved to its prior location south of the TI clock tower 10 years ago. That location is now at the east end of a planned
redevelopment and they and their neighbors were reportedly given two years to relocate. Rather than see what the future would bring, they moved into the restaurant space in the Town Shores plaza with a view of the park. The Pearl is now open at 5802 28th Ave. S in Gulfport. 727-360-9151.

Injured Shorebird Help Line 727-391-6211 The Seaside Seabird Sanctuary, 18328 Gulf Blvd., Indian Shores, is a local treasure. Open 8am-4pm daily, they have a small parking lot on the beach side of Gulf Blvd. just south of the Park Boulevard bridge. Parking and visitation are free to the public, but donations are needed from anyone who can afford to share. They are a hospital and recovery center for injured birds with a cool little gift shop. One of the valuable services they offer is coordination of injured seabird rescues. We needed their services recently for the second time in the past 30 years. Our neighborhood blue heron, Gertrude, had gotten her right foot badly tangled in fishing line. My neighbor called 727-391-6211 persistently to ask for help. A retired female physician from Iowa named Mickey responded. She has an amazing capture device, a large clamshell type net that, in the hands of an experienced user, can catch a big bird like Gertrude without injury. She said her large 8-foot net was one of only five in the world. Mickey is a volunteer who says she sometimes performs six rescues in a day and said she
has performed over 3,000 in total. She really wanted to be a veterinarian. She said to tell you to “please not try and catch injured birds yourself.” It makes her job much harder when unsuccessful captures
have been tried prior to a volunteer’s arrival. Gertrude was an easy catch, and we helped Mickey hold her while she cut the string off her foot and happily found the foot uninjured, so she was released, rather than hospitalized. You can visit www.seaside seabirdsanctuary.org. They have 1,350 Google reviews with a 4.7 out of 5-star average. Go anytime 8am-4pm to see what has evolved into an aviary for a huge variety of recovering birds. It’s not-for-profit. Donations are appreciated and well deserved.
Alligator and Wildlife Discovery Center
There is another amazing animal rescue at John’s Pass. It used to be only an alligator attraction, but under Sonny Flynn’s management it has evolved into a 10,000 square foot pet and wildlife rescue center, with an affiliated farm and petting zoo, butterfly garden and more. They were the cover story in January and are planning a Cajun low country boil fun and fundraiser at the Bilmar Beach Resort on Feb. 10, 2023. Save the date.

ENCHANT ST.PETERSBURG
By Nanette Wiser
It was a holly, jolly Christmas at the opening of Enchant St. Petersburg with a proclamation from Mayor Welch, city council chair Gina Driscoll, Miss St. Pete, Miss Tampa, elves and...Santa helping to illuminate the largest Christmas tree as the scent of holiday sugar cookies wafted in the air. Favorite holiday memories? For all, dinner with family. Gina shared Secret Santa traditions, the mayor’s daughter likes Polar Express and his wife celebrates her birthday on Christmas, while the Mayor likes Michael Jackson’s I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus and Silent Night. Erica Riggins was festive in her Santa hat, filming the night’s newest and brightest holiday memories. www.enchantchristmas.com
Sovereign Boat Club was founded in 2019 for Floridians who want a first class boating experience –without the high cost of ownership. They keep their local boats at Maximo Marina, the Harborage, and Port 32 in Tierra Verde, where they are convenient to all of our local readers, are protected, and close to Boca Ciega Bay, the Intracoastal and the Gulf of Mexico.
There’s No High Cost to Buy – Boat prices have gone up 10% in the past year. Boat Clubs cost a small fraction. Borrowing Cost Uncertainty – Access to easy, cheap money for financing purchases like homes, cars and boats appears to be ending as interest rates rise. Asset Depreciation – An industry rule of thumb is that the value of a new boat drops 25% upon delivery and it will be worth 50% of the purchase price after four to five years of use. Time Needed to Manage – The time for an owner to manage and maintain a boat can easily exceed the time spent on the boat for pleasure. What do you charge an hour for your time? Annual Operating Expenses Going Up – Limited slip availability, fewer tradesmen to do maintenance and insurance claims from hurricanes have raised expenses significantly.
Before you take a step toward boat ownership, check out Sovereign Boat Club at www.sovereignboatclub.com Email sales@sovereignboatclub.com or call Greg Sweeney at 727-200-3474 for answers to any of your questions. Tell them you read about them in Paradise NEWS and your first month of membership is FREE when you join.

HOLIDAY COCKTAIL It’s beginning to taste a lot like Christmas, especially at downtown St. Pete’s best craft cocktail lounges such as Parkshore, Urban Stillhouse, Social Roost, Intermezzo (with the holiday pop-up bar), Cassis, Ceviche, Mandarin Hide, The Saint Speakeasy, Flute & Dram, The Scott, Birch & Vine, and Rococo Steak. At the beach, make merry at The Club at Treasure Island, 82 Degrees, Don CeSar, RumFish, Chill’s, Middlegrounds, Sea Dog, Island Grill, Red, White & Booze, Vista at the Top, and Dewey’s.
Three of our favorites? Intermezzo’s with mulled wine reduction, London Dry Gin, grapefruit shrub, and prosecco or their holiday rum cocktail (Barbados rum, rhum agricole, Trinidad overproof rum, ube & coconut orgeat, acid-adjusted pineapple juice topped with snow). Bavaro’s Limoncello Spritz (Prosecco, club soda, Limoncello simple syrup), Rococo Steak’s Smoke Cocktail mixes 2.5 oz Old Forester Bourbon, 0.5 oz Maple Simple Syrup, 3 dashes Orange Bitters, 3 dashes Apple Bitters, 1 Maple Bacon Cube topped with Applewood Smoked Bacon. Position maple bacon cube in bottom of glass. Pour ingredients over. Shop for bitters at Total Wine, ABC Liquors and Leukens, or online; maple bacon cubes at www.herbandlous.com
Savor St. Pete introduced tipplers to dozens of trendy boozes, perfect for your bar cart or gift. Best of show was California’s Gray Whale Gin, a botanical delight best served with fresh lime and lemon juice and agave syrup, shaken with ice and served with a lemon peel over ice. We liked the butterscotch and dark stone fruit notes of St. Pete’s Horse Soldier’s reserve Barrel Strength Bourbon Whiskey. Espresso martinis get a dash of sparkle with walnut bitters while you can wrap gifts more efficiently when sipping coffee with creamy bourbons (salted caramel, mocha). Get comfortable with Southern Comfort’s limited-edition black unisex “drinking pants” that have a pocket designed to carry a shot glass and can be turned inside out to instantly become “fancy pants.”
If you’re entertaining guests, get thee to a tiki hut for a frozen concoction, like this one at Sirata Beach Resort While our favorite is a banana daiquiri, you’ll have to research on a beach trolley pub crawl to Sloppy Joe’s, Caddy’s, Crabby’s, Bongo’s, Tiki Docks Skyway Bar, Jimmy B’s, Undertow, BRGR and The Wharf.

Sip, sup and play @Sea Dog Brew Pub!
By Nanette Wiser
Eat, drink and be merry at Treasure Island’s Sea Dog Brewing Co. on Gulf Blvd. where you can watch panoramic sunrises and sunsets. With cheers to five years, this waterfront dining restaurant and full-liquor bar is Gulf Beaches’ favorite local and visitor rendezvous.
For a good time, friends and visitors meet up at Sea Dog’s party central between the north and south Gulf Beaches. You can come by car, trolley or boat and tie up to 11 boat slips in front of the building and across the street. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, a robust happy hour and sports on big-screen TVs, there are family games and pool tables to amuse kids of all ages (as well as a children’s menu). The downstairs patio is pet-friendly for dogs on leashes; a wall of fame showcases Sea DOGS we love.
With ample parking on both sides of the street, plan to spend a few hours eating, drinking, and making new friends. Sea Dog’s team of chefs craft dishes with fresh, local-caught seafood and
farm to table produce and feature a daily special such as surf & turf. At breakfast, best of show is the homemade sausage gravy and biscuits from a 110-year-old West Virginia recipe, shrimp and grits and eggs done to perfection.
Share the Buffalo Calamari, smoked chicken wings and Irish meatballs or start with the Maine lobster bisque or Walt’s ahi tuna poke. The burgers and handhelds, especially the blackened fish tacos and blackened grouper sandwich, are stellar. Seafood fra diavolo, pesto seafood linguine and lobster mac & cheese delight seafood lovers. Pub favorites include the beer-braised ribs, fish ‘n’chips, hand cut steaks and their famous Maine-inspired super lobster roll and dishes – an homage to their Shipyard Brewing roots. I love the Drunken Burger made with bourbon bacon jam and their signature beer Export Ale onions, Sea Dog beer mustard and white cheddar. Vegetarians eat well, from the salads to the Islander Veggie Wrap.
The hand-crafted desserts are scrumptious, especially the key lime pie, seven-layer carrot cake and the holiday beers including Snickerdoodle Ale and Midnight Snack beer rimmed with Oreo cookies and white chocolate. (In February, a new menu debuts with old favorites and new dishes organized by From The: Ocean, Cantina, Deli, Butcher Shop, Brick Oven, Italy.)
There are three waterfront bars (two upstairs, one downstairs), dozens of specialty cocktails and rotating taps that change monthly.

EMBRACE THE LONGEVITY DIET People living in Blue Zones seem to live longer, according to researchers who have studied what people in these zones eat and how they live including Ikaria in Greece, Okinawa in Japan, Ogliastra in Sardinia, Italy, and the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. They suffer less from heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity and many of their residents live to be 100 years old. National Geographic Fellow and author Dan Buettner created the Blue Zone diet plan, inspired by these long-living people. The mostly plant-based diet includes 95% vegetables, fruits, grains, and legumes. They do not eat meat, dairy, sugary foods or drinks, and processed food. Food is not the only longevity factor; people in these zones are physically active, have low levels of stress, are connected socially, and have a strong sense of purpose in life. As with all diets, consult your physician or nutritionist about what’s right for you. www.bluezones.com/recipes/food-guidelines

GET FIT In the summer of 1965, pickleball was founded by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Today, competition is fierce, and the game is going pro; even Tom Brady owns a team. Naples, Florida, has claimed the unofficial title of Pickleball Capital of the World. The city is home to a growing community of avid players as well as the annual Minto U.S. Open Pickleball Championship and the Naples Pickleball Center, which contains 60 well-maintained courts. The casual fitness craze is about to get a huge venue if Largo’s Mid-Pinellas Sports Complex is approved that would include Pinellas County’s largest pickleball facility and its first Metro Lagoon. Pickleball is an amazing workout; studies show that middle-aged players burned 40% more calories during a 30-minute pickleball game than during 30 minutes of walking, increasing their heart rates to within the moderate-intensity exercise zone. So why not give Pickleball a shot? Check out courts at Walter Fuller Park, downtown St. Pete’s Pickleball 101 on the 2nd Tuesday from 6-7pm at Coquina Key Park, 3595 Locust St. SE.
GOT CORE? Preventing lower back pain is all about posture and strengthening your deep core muscles. If you have back pain, check in with your doctor and see if a licensed physical therapist might help as well as these tips. Stop slouching, especially at your desk; practice sitting with correct posture and be sure to stand and stretch every twenty minutes. Exercise your back with gentle stretches, yoga, swimming and walking in shoes with good support. Spend less time on the couch or bending over to read your phone; it can cause increased pressure on the discs in your back. Stop lifting heavy things. Passive treatments like heat, ice or ultrasound are helpful, but motion Is lotion for working out those kinks. www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/adult-health/ multimedia/back-pain/sls-20076265

WATER SAFETY Keep your kids safe around pools or at the beach during a family gathering. Did you know that an average of 10 fatal drowning incidents occur daily in the U.S. and drowning is the single leading cause of death among children 1-4 years old. The National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) believes that through education, awareness, and advocacy we can reduce drowning accidents and aquatic injuries by making this a priority year-round. For more tips, visit www.ndpa.org
Implement Layers of Protection at Home Create security systems to prevent unauthorized access to bodies of water by children including barriers and alarms, supervision, water competency, life jackets, and emergency preparation.
Practice Water Safety at Home Never leave your child alone in the bathtub–even for a moment. Use bath seats with supervision; they can tip over and your child can slip out. Empty water from containers, such as large pails and 5-gallon buckets, immediately after use. Keep bathroom doors closed. Install doorknob covers or a hook-and-eye latch or other lock that is beyond the reach of your small child. Keep toilet seats closed. Always close the toilet lid and consider using a toilet lid latch.
Teach Your Children About Water Safety There are plenty of fun and free tools available online that teach water safety such as coloring sheets, crossword puzzles, and games.
Enroll Your Child in Swimming Lessons Formal swimming lessons reduce the risk of drowning among children 1-4 years by 88%.
Invest in a Life Vest for Each Member of the Family Not all jackets offer the same protection; make sure the life jacket you choose is tested and approved by the U.S. Coast Guard. Learn CPR With Rescue Breaths. Compression-Only CPR Does Not Treat Drowning Learn CPR training with rescue breaths and basic water rescue skills. Always have a phone available to call 911 immediately if needed.
Understand What Flotation Devices Do and Don’t Do Fun flotation devices do not teach children to swim and do not protect them against water injury or drowning. Be vigilant and always keep your eyes on your little ones.
BE PREPARED Make it your New Year’s resolution to learn CPR and first aid; it can save a life when disaster strikes, from accidents to stroke, until professionals arrive. Giving appropriate first aid immediately can help to reduce a person’s recovery time and make the difference between the patient having a temporary or long-term disability. You’ll learn how to remain calm in emergency situations and you’ll learn simple acronyms to help you recall the steps you need to take. First aid training will make you confident and comfortable and therefore more effective and in control when you need to be. www.mayoclinic.org/first-aid

Medicare Open Enrollment: It’s Not Too Late Special Enrollment Opportunity Announced
Millions of Floridians have been affected by this year’s storms and may have missed an important opportunity to make their health the priority and shore up their Medicare coverage. But don’t worry, there may still be time! The yearly Medicare Open Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, but Medicare has established a special enrollment opportunity to give eligible Florida residents more time to make some important decisions about their health insurance options.
To determine if you’re included in this special Medicare enrollment opportunity contact 1-800-Medicare 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with any questions.
“We’ve all been impacted by the storm, and now more than ever it’s essential to take charge of your healthcare,” reminds Millennium Physician Group Family Medicine Physician Jason Philippe, MD. “We realize you may have other things on your mind, but your health is a priority. And staying healthy starts with the right healthcare coverage.”
It’s been shown that life-threatening conditions and disease are greater in the weeks and months following a hurricane. And hurricanes are shown to cause and exacerbate multiple conditions. While most adverse health impacts peak within six months following hurricanes, chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and mental health issues have been shown to continue for years after a hurricane’s impact.
“We know inadequate healthcare coverage results in postponement of appropriate healthcare needs,” admits Dr. Philippe. “This can delay diagnosis and worsen chronic health conditions, leading to poorer health outcomes and higher overall healthcare spending.”
In fact, studies show those who are uninsured or underinsured are less likely to take advantage of preventive services and more likely to have poorer health outcomes. Open and Special Enrollment are the only times of year Medicare enrollees can make changes to their health and drug plans for the following year (with few exceptions). Decisions you make today about your healthcare and coverage can change the rest of your life.
For more information about your Medicare options, go to YourMedicareConnect.com. To find a doctor who specializes in Medicare quality programs and the quality of care they deliver to patients of Medicare age, head to www.MillenniumPhysician.com/find-a-doctor.

"I CAN WALK BAREFOOT ON THE BEACH AGAIN!"
Local acupuncture clinic is treating PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY with incredible results.
Pain comes in many shapes and sizes One of the most debilitating being the burning and tingling that comes with peripheral neuropathy. A disease that comes with years of shooting, stabbing pain that gradually ends in numbness balance problems and on occasion amputations A disease that was once classified as irreparable
John G. of Treasure Island was facing such a fate.
“I stopped golfing. I wasn’t taking walks on the beach with my wife. I was living on gabapentin and antidepressants. Everywhere I went, my doctor, the specialists, the pain institute, told me there was nothing else they could do. How are you supposed to live your life knowing that everyday brings pain and suffering?”
Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves, commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet. This causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow. Most peripheral neuropathy sufferers experience a heightened sensitivity to touch making it almost impossible for those diagnosed to even wear shoes, much less enjoy life.
“It was like walking on sharp rocks. I barely left my recliner,” shared John. His experience is not uncommon for those diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy
That is until he found Dr Rebecca Gibbons of Achieve Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine of St Petersburg Dr. Gibbons and her team have pioneered a medical solution to treat neuropathy by eliminating or greatly reducing symptoms. Helping to give people their lives back.
Acupuncture is incredible at restoring blood flow and stimulating damaged nerves preventing them from dying off,” explains Dr. Gibbons. “We take our treatments a step further by integrating ATP Resonance BioTherapy™ which targets specific nerves in the body using microcurrent. ATP therapy is like watering a plant This treatment will stimulate the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. Four months later John is thrilled with his progress, “I can walk barefoot on the beach again ”
Success stories like John’s are not atypical for the staff at Achieve Acupuncture. “We have an 80% success rate in treating neuropathy,” states Dr. Gibbons.
The number of treatments needed to allow the nerves to fully recover will vary from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation.
While John’s peripheral neuropathy is considered idiopathic meaning the cause is unknown, Dr Gibbons treatments can also help people whose neuropathy is caused by diabetes or chemotherapy.
“We have see tremendous success in treating neuropathy of all types through very personalized treatments, specifically tailored to treat each individual case.”

HANGING AROUND
By Caron Schwartz
SOUTH PASADENA ...
It may not have Caltech or the Rose Bowl like its California namesake, but tiny South Pasadena has a lot going for it. My sweetheart, Lenny, and I recently discovered a few gems.
One Monday evening we wandered into downtown Gulfport seeking drinks and dinner. Sadly, not much was open, and we were hungry. We ran into our friend Susan who was in the same boat, so the three of us decided to head west to the Horse & Jockey, a British-style pub with live country music the first Thursday of the month and jazz the third Thursday. On Dec. 15, they will have a Christmas sing-along. The place was noisy and pleasantly packed. Susan took advantage of the British theme and ordered steak and ale pie. Lenny and I were less adventurous: conventional burger for him, veggie for me. We washed it down with pints of English ale and left feeling quite jolly indeed.
A practical guy, Lenny asked where I kept sewing needles so he could replace some errant shirt buttons. “Not sure,” I said, “But I know just the place to find them.” For 50 years, Jay’s Fabric Center is legendary. Lenny found just what he needed, and, at Mr. Jay’s suggestion, I bought needles for my ancient sewing machine, vowing to repair my pile of ripped hems.
For refreshments we wandered into Florida Orange Grove Winery where we went the whole hog, including a backstage tour and tasting. Although only the citrus is grown in Florida, all the wine has been manufactured, aged, and bottled on-site since 1991. I enjoyed the “Midnight Sun,” a Florida orange wine made with coffee, a caffeine connoisseur’s delight. Lenny liked “Florida Grapefruit,” so we took home a bottle. Other delish discoveries included Ted Peters Famous Smoked Fish. The smoked fish spread with crackers makes a lovely afternoon snack for two and Leverock’s, perfect for date night. At Pasadena Liquors, owner Jim Valenty knows his grapes; he pointed my sister and me in the direction of the old vine Zin we were looking for. Lenny reports that Pasadena Bar and Grill is a friendly neighborhood watering hole with great burgers. I love the olive and feta at Pasadena Produce (aka Spiro’s) but my weakness is the halvah. Vino Simpatico features live music on weekends. After we shared a delicious six-pour flight at this boutique wine shop we were ready for naps.

With the change in season, it’s time to refresh your home and garden. As we live in Paradise, there’s no need to batten down the hatches for a frosty winter.
Is your indoor plant SAD? Just like people with seasonal affective disorder, indoor plants yearn for natural light during the winter months. Why not add a grow light to support strong, healthy growth, increase nutrition and accelerate flowering?
For most, full-spectrum, LED grow lights are cost-effective and energy-efficient.
Place the grow light within a couple of feet of a plant directly above rather than off to the side. Set your timer for 8-10 hours daily, imitating natural sunlight.
Spot check your home exterior. Clean your gutters. Make sure there is no damage to your gutters post-storm season as well as clean out fallen leaves, nests, and other debris. Ditto for screen. Do they need repair at a local hardware store? Is it time to rinse pollen and dirt off and look around window exteriors for mudwasp nests or other issues? If your outdoor plastic furniture looks dull or has mold, Mold Armour and a little Lysol cleaner can do wonders for your patio chairs. Sacino’s Cleaners cleans patio cushions and provides free pick-up and delivery to your home.

Contracts for the Purchase and Sale of Real Estate
Real estate transactions in America are nothing if not complex. The number of terms involved in even the most basic deals is surprising.
In addition to the purchase price, there is the closing date, as well as the amount of escrow funds to be deposited and when. The amount of the price to be financed, along with the method of financing is quite complicated. Closing costs and who pays for which are important.
The right to inspect the property is important, along with the timing of inspections, and the ramifications of the inspection revealing information that disappoints the buyers’ expectations.
A great deal of information about the property needs to be disclosed to the buyer.
Even after the basic terms of the transaction are agreed to, there are several things that the legal duty to close are contingent upon, that is, the buyer may be able to walk away from the deal without losing his or her deposit.
What happens when there is a disagreement about any of these items, and what procedures are required to cope with such disagreements?
This is a very short list of the complexities that have to be coped with to successfully get to closing. The good news is that a good contract form, skillfully executed, takes all of these things (and much more) into account, and just reading such a contract can help you understand how all of these details are reconciled.
There is a form in almost universal use throughout Florida, which was drafted by a committee of Florida real estate lawyers and Florida Realtors, known as the FR/Bar or FAR/Bar Contract. Happily, it is designed
not to give an advantage to the buyer or seller over the other, but rather to balance the needs and interests of both sides to the transaction as fairly as possible. It is 12 pages long, and if you can read it all the way through you will know a lot of real estate contract law. Of course, there are also addenda that accommodate the additional details of buying and selling condominiums, arranging seller financing, and other complications.
More good news is found in the fact that almost all real estate agents have been trained in the use of these contracts, and there are many real estate lawyers who have used them for years and can bring a great deal more skill to the table in working with them. The Florida courts have also handled a great many cases based on these contracts, and we all feel sure about how their language will be interpreted by the courts.

HOLIDAY PETS
It’s the season for giving and we have a lot to celebrate. We’ve made it through Covid and have a renewed sense of normal. During this period, pet adoptions were at an all-time high. There were lines out of the doors of shelters, people were sleeping in shelter parking lots so they could be the first in line in order to adopt a pet, and for the first time in a while shelters were not overflowing. They were emptying. This activity has subsided and shelters are filling up again. Fosters and pet parents are needed at an increased level.
However, pets are not gifts and should not be treated as such. Whether adopting or purchasing a pet from a responsible breeder, neither should be thought of as a gift. There is always, no matter how much one knows a person, a question on whether the recipient is willing or ready to have a lifelong commitment to a pet.
PET HEALTH
Pets are not an object that you can leave in a room and forget about until you are ready to play with them.
They require constant love and attention, training, food, water, vaccinations, regular health checkups, care and medications when sick and the list goes on. Pets are an emotional commitment as well as a financial commitment.
Even if you are sure of the recipient’s commitment level and readiness to have a pet, there is a certain amount of responsibility of the person gifting the pet. Should something go awry then you share responsibility to correct the situation. This may include providing a home and taking responsibility for the pet or finding another responsible home to adopt the pet.
The bottom line is pets are not gifts. They are a commitment, responsibility, and decision that really should be left to oneself. Consider other gift options for your loved one’s current pets, making a donation to a shelter of your choice in their honor, or even giving the gift of pet insurance for a loved one’s pet to help ease the financial burden.
Happy Holidays everyone!

IDEA INCUBATORS
Brilliant minds leading local research for global innovations
Tampa Bay is attracting brilliant researchers and educators who will shape the future, with the St. Pete Innovation District leading the way.
University of South Florida St. Pete (USFSP) offers programs on AI and Augmented Reality, Medical Innovation, Small Business/Entrepreneur incubators, and Marine Science. Its Florida Studies program recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, with new Regional Chancellor Christian Hardigree congratulating the 69 distinguished alumni at a recent ceremony attended by its co-founders and other local dignitaries.
Eckerd College has programs on Cybersecurity, Arts/Theater/ Film, and Marine Science with a requirement that all students fulfill a community service component. Interim President James Annarelli has fully supported the school’s leading-edge curriculum in the role he assumed August 2022. The college hosts the prestigious Writers in Paradise retreat in January, led by luminary author Dennis LeHane and other literary celebs.
St. Pete College continues to expand, with classes and certificates focused on future industry needs: Technology/ Cybersecurity, Health Services/Vet Tech, and Arts/Music Industry Recording Arts. President Tonjua Williams, a faculty member since 1986, recently confirmed a $3 million-plus state grant for Workforce Development. SPC, which recently marked its 95th anniversary, offers workforce opportunities, including certificates in marketing, healthcare, manufacturing and technology.
InnovatIon DIstrIct UpDate Alison Barlow, Innovation District Executive Director, told Paradise News,“Ideas can take months, even years to move from a nascent concept into a tangible outcome. Many of the activities we are seeing today in the St. Petersburg Innovation District began even before the district was formed in 2016.
“It has taken hours designing solutions, securing funding, soliciting partners, and otherwise proving that the initial idea is worthy of moving forward. In the Innovation District, where ideas are our currency, we go through these steps daily. It takes patience – and then more patience! When the ideas come together it’s exciting.
“In the last year, we have seen the use of a building reimagined, return of favorites like the St. Pete Science Festival, exploration of District-based workforce housing and childcare, and pursuit of a $160 million transformational grant.
“Repurposing a city building along the St. Petersburg Port, the District has created in late 2021 a shared space where the triple helix of innovation – private industry, government and academia – come together.
“The Maritime and Defense Technology Hub is now home to 19 organizations who are working to grow local capabilities and workforce in the industries of maritime technology and defense/ national security technology. The members of the Hub are required as part of their leases to participate in the Innovation District, and to seek opportunities to strengthen St. Pete and the Tampa Bay region.

“They have hosted over 200 elementary- through college-aged groups to learn about careers, provided internship opportunities, held technology exchange events, and mentored each other. To learn more about the Hub go online to www.stpeteinnovationdistrict.com
“The St. Petersburg Science Festival is one of the major Innovation Center events. It returned to the USF St. Petersburg campus and Poynter Park along with MarineQuest this past February and attracted more than 10,000 fans. The festival was held virtually for the last two years and gave the team a chance to explore how to broaden the reach to more students across the region.
“But nothing beats being in person where you can look into a microscope, investigate marine animals, deconstruct a computer, and more. The Steering Committee is working hard to prepare and is excited to return live. To learn more about the 2023 Festival, including how to volunteer and exhibit, go online to www.stpetescifest.org.
“Many employers in the Tampa Bay region are finding that the limited availability of Workforce Housing and Childcare for newborns to pre-kindergarten is impacting their ability to recruit and retain key workers. Several large employers in and around the Innovation District convened to explore what options they might have to address these issues if they worked together.
“The Innovation District conducted a 30-day assessment of the employer’s needs, current assets, and future opportunities for partnership and funding. The study found that though these topics are complex, there are several possible paths forward. The District and employers are now determining how they will proceed and incorporating options in the new District Master Plan.
new BlUe economy Grant “Many know the term, the blue economy, but few may be familiar with a more recent adaptation called the new blue economy. The key difference is the incorporation and increased importance of technology. More specifically, the new blue economy is a knowledge-based economy, looking to the sea not just for extraction of material
goods, but for data and information to address societal challenges and inspire their solutions.
“The traditional (old) blue economy developed around tangible resources (e.g., food and fossil fuel production) and critical services (e.g., shipping, coastal tourism). Technology served a supporting function at best. In the future, the role of information and related disruptive technologies will take the lead characterizing the status and trends of the marine environment, and how business and government can take advantage of such information.
“The USF College of Marine Science and the Innovation District have partnered with the Florida Institute of Oceanography, Marine Technology Society and many others to pursue a national grant that would allow the new blue economy to flourish in the Tampa Bay region.
“Called the National Science Foundation Regional Innovation Engine, this grant is focused on catalyzing innovation ecosystems across the U.S. to advance critical technologies, address national and societal challenges, foster partnerships, and promote and stimulate economic growth and job creation. The grant response is due Jan. 18, 2023.
“For each of the ideas highlighted here, there are dozens of others that are still in the forming stage in the Innovation District. Ideas like new facility construction, additional internet access to address the digital divide, and expanded work in STEAM workforce development.
“Eventually some of these ideas will take shape and become real. Others will be set aside because the timing is not right, or aspects are not ready. This constant exploration of new possibilities is the magic that makes the St. Pete Innovation District a powerful economic driver, as well as a lot of fun.”
[Editor’s Note: Special thanks for Alison Barlow, St. Pete Innovation District; and staff of USFSP, Eckerd and St. Pete College for the excellent info and comments.]

Hideaway Presents serves up two not-to-be missed shows at the North Hall at Bayboro. On 12/9, celebrate the holidays with Have Gun, Will Travel and opening act Gator Tooth, merging members of The Cadillac Cowboys and The Hummingbirds. On 12/16, jam with TC Carr, one of Florida’s premier harmonica players and bluesmen, who sings and writes songs.
On 11/12, Plant City’s Wish Farms celebrated their 100th anniversary with a “berry” fun live concert that featured ZZ Top, Bishop Briggs, Saint Motel, Blanco Brown, Kim Richey and Shevonne. The music lineup is stellar, with Willie Nelson 3/3, Tanya Tucker 3/8, Wayne Newton followed by Train 3/10, Keith Sweat 3/11, Lynyrd Skynyrd 3/12 and more. (In honor of Wish Farm’s birthday, owner Gary Wishnatzki published a book about his 48 years in the berry business that takes the reader from streets of 1900’s New York to Florida’s strawberry fields, his father Strawberry Joe and the battlefields of World War II Europe.)
In mid-November, Free Range Strange released their EP Live From The Ghost Motel. The Road, the Wind, and the Will to be Free! Miles behind us, and miles to go. Let’s pull over and write a song. The circle of troubadours and gypsies that is Free Range Strange feels right at home sailing the highways and back routes that take them to the stages of America. They pour their heart into original tunes and are enthralled with the ones they choose to cover. Florida grown, Timber and Sunnie Rae met in 2014 at The Spirit of Suwannee Music Park. A place they call home. Both avid concert goers and tour followers, they immediately “Clicked” and knew they wanted to explore the wild world together. It wasn’t long before that Love gave birth to FRS. The two became one and the melodies plenty. Nilu Jimenez-Ross has been holding down the Upright with the group since 2019. Last year they picked up Patrick Doyle, the 5-string banjo picker and this year Savannah Lee fiddlin’ around brings heat to the stew that is Free Range Strange.
The first two songs of local wunderkind Leon Vincent’s upcoming album Good Guy have been released on multiple streaming platforms. How Can You Love Me and Is It Too Late To Kiss You? ARTS MUSE x 2
Two new arts leaders will help shape St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay’s cultural landscape. Celeste Davis has joined St. Pete Mayor Ken Welch’s team as Director of Arts, Culture and Tourism. The St. Petersburg native brings more than 20 years of experience in arts-related positions, including most recently as executive director for Tampa Bay Business for Culture and the Arts (TBCCA). She also serves as the creator, producer and host of “The Curious Collector: A Conversation Cafe,” a virtual monthly art discussion with the Carter G. Woodson African American History Museum. Celeste earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Spelman College in Atlanta and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA), from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. In her new role, she will focus on elevating arts visibility and impact through cultural tourism, building relationships with creative community partners and positioning St. Pete’s cultural assets as destinations. Celeste will also expand corporate and business sponsorships to increase arts education to under-served communities.
FILM FESTIVALS
Tampa Bay is a hot destination for movie making on both sides of the bay, including our share of Hallmark specials. For cinephiles, there are dozens of viewing pleasures. In addition to arthouse Green Light Cinema in downtown St. Pete, Screen Door Microcinema has opened in Ybor City’s historic Kress building that will show student, indie and foreign films. The region is known for dozens of film festivals, including the Gasparilla Film Festival 3/23-3/26, Dunedin International Film Festival 1/12-15, Sunscreen Film Festival 4/27-30, Tampa Bay Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (showing films during the year at local venues), the prestigious Sarasota Film Festival 3/24-4/2 and others. The Tampa Bay Jewish Film Festival hosts films at Bryan Glazer Family JCC and Green Light Cinema in December including The Man in the Basement, Rose and Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas. For a spirited movie, check out documentary maker James Blankenfeld’s Tampa Beer: Crafting The Bay on streaming outlets.
Replacing Davis at TBCCA as executive director is Zora Carrier, Ph.D. who came to TBBCA from the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts (FMoPA), where she was executive director. Before her tenure at FMoPA, Carrier was the executive director of the Open Concept Gallery in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a position she also held at the Gallery Art Factory in Prague, Czech Republic. “I am excited to continue the important work this organization has been doing for over 30 years. I believe a direct line can be drawn from TBBCA’s philosophy that ‘the arts are good for business and business is good for the arts’ to Tampa Bay’s meteoric rise,” said Carrier. “It’s an exciting time to lead this organization.”
RODIN ROCKS Through March 26, the Museum of Fine Arts presents True Nature: Rodin and the Age of Impressionism showcasing his best-known sculptures together with other rare masterworks by leading Impressionist painters. This masterful exhibition features dozens of sculptures, paintings, photographs, and works on paper from fin-de-siècle Paris. Rodin (1840–1917) created dramatic works that are instantly recognizable, and pervade our collective cultural consciousness. This exhibition offers a remarkably comprehensive look at Rodin, placing him within the context of the profound artistic, cultural, and social changes occurring at the end of the 19th century in France. True Nature also explores Rodin’s desire for academic recognition, even as he remained at the forefront of the avant-garde alongside the Impressionists.

Yay for Ya La’ford!
Local artist Ya La’ford received the Blanche Armwood Legacy Award at the annual National Alumnae Association of Spelman College Tampa Bay Chapter event. The award honors the legacy of Tampa native Blanche Armwood, who graduated from Spelman College in 1906 and was the first African American woman from Florida to earn a law degree from Howard University Law School in 1938. Like Armwood, La’ford earned a JD. But it is her work as a community and public arts activist that earned her the honor.
But wait, there’s more La’ford’s work is on display at the annual Florida Contemporary exhibit at the Baker Museum in Naples, FL. Since she lived in Naples during Hurricane Ian, La’ford created VORTEX, an exhibit that serves as a place to find solace and healing through the beauty of art. On exhibit through July 16, 2023. www.artisnaples.org/ baker-museum

Color my world
The Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg is joining with EnChroma (www.enchroma. com), creators of glasses for color blindness, to offer an enhanced art-viewing experience for visitors with Color Vision Deficiency (CVD).
The MFA was the first museum in the Tampa Bay area to prioritize color accessibility through this initiative.
EnChroma glasses at the museum are available in adult and children’s sizes, as well as in fit-over glasses for those who also wear prescription lenses.
Art News Nudes
“Hyperrealism. This is Not a Body,” a group show of 30 lifelike sculptures, many nudes, are now on exhibit at Paris’s Museé Maillol, marking the 13th stop of the exhibition’s now six-year tour. As if that’s not interesting enough, at least 800 attendees visited the show naked themselves during specially appointed time slots during November. Previous “Hyperrealism” engagements in Liège and Lyon hosted similar all-nude events.

MIGHTY MOTE Mote and the University of Maryland have been awarded a federal grant to establish the U.S. HAB Control Technologies Incubator, a nationwide clearinghouse for mitigation research related to controlling harmful algae blooms in both freshwater and saltwater environments. “Overall harmful algal blooms frequency has been increasing a tremendous amount over past five years due to climate change, increasing tempera tures, and legacy nutrients,” said UMCES Professor Al Place.
THE COUNT IS IN! In November, Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium announced the total number of nests across all species of sea turtles they recorded during this year’s nesting period: 4,538 nests were recorded, including 4,373 loggerhead sea turtle nests, 163 green sea turtle nests, one Kemp’s Ridley nest and one leatherback nest. Sea turtle nesting season runs March-October. The eggs incubate for about 60 days, depend ing on conditions, before hatching. Sea turtles hatch in the late summer and fall months in Florida. This means you might see a swarm of infant turtles fighting their way to the sea between August and October. (If you see a sick, injured, or stranded sea turtle in Pinellas County, call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 888-404-3922.)
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDS Friends of Pinellas Master Naturalists promotes awareness, understanding, and respect of Florida’s natural world among Florida’s citizens and visi tors. They offer nature-related quarterly programs for adults and families, field trips for members and guests, and support FMNP by educating potential students about the upcoming classes at environmental booth events and festivals throughout the year. In 2022, they explored Brooker Creek and Blue Cypress Lake, took a tour of the Tampa History Museum, and visited Cedar Key Biological Station to learn more about horseshoe crabs and the living shoreline restoration project. It’s a great eco-friendly gift to join or donate. www.pinellasmasternaturalists.org
HOLIDAY RECYCLING TIPS Between Thanksgiving week and New Year’s Day, people generate 25 percent more waste. Do your part to recycle or reuse this holiday. The Pinellas County Department of Solid Waste reminds you these items CAN be placed in your recycling bin: Wrapping paper (paper only), cardboard boxes, paper boxes, paper cards and enve lopes, catalogs, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and jugs, aluminum, tin, and steel cans. These items should NOT be put your recycling bin; consider reusing, donating, or throwing in the garbage: Christmas lights, garland/tinsel, foil wrapping paper, ribbons and bows, bubble wrap, plastic air pillows, foam products, paper/plastic plates, batteries, and plastic bags (which can be recycled at Publix locations).

“Get Sirius About Your Future”
DECEMBER ASTROLOGY
Communication, transportation, and thinking planet Mercury moves into practical Capricorn on the 6th; just in time to help us economically finish holiday travel plans. The Full Oak Moon in restless Gemini on the 7th activates the travel signs and we are ready to go whether near or far. On the 9th, love and money planet Venus visits sensible Capricorn joining Mercury. We can spend cautiously and still enjoy the holiday season. In love and romance, a serious tone is set and we prefer to take it slowly.
Giant Jupiter, our bringer of fortune, growth, and freedom, returns to fiery Aries on the 20th where it will stay until spring of next year. We are ready for action and impatient for things to go our way. Much fortunate energy comes with this but we must check our egos and willfulness. If you are an Aries expect some wonderful opportunities to come your way. Cancer may have luck in their career, Libras in relationships, and Capricorns with family. The influence is mild for the other signs that have had influence this year.
It is time for a new season when the Winter Solstice occurs on the 21st as the Sun enters Capricorn. The solstice chart brings high energy, a strong initiative for change, and growth. It encourages us to move forward, gives freedom from stagnation, and a will to just let go. What we take with us into the winter season will be of value and necessary to sustain us. It will foster a sense of security; choosing to keep what is good for us going forward.
Two days later the New Moon in Capricorn on the 23rd begins the lunar cycle this month with an amazing amount of stable but creative energy. Expect to continue throwing out the old, allowing transforma tion, and opening room for the new. Supporting this new cycle is a Mercury shadow before its Retrograde on the 29th.
Yes, we begin another new year with a Mercury Retrograde cycle; so it is time only to do RE things. Nothing new. Mercury will be direct in late January. Until then REview, RElease, and RE all things. If traveling REturn to a favorite place or have a family reunion. Many things may be REvealed, REleased, and REsolved on a global level.
SAGITTARIUS: Your personal new year has begun and the focus is on relationships both personal and business. Romance and fun are on your holiday calendar. A new cycle in finances, income, and reviewing values.
CAPRICORN: Work and health issues are in the spotlight, clarification is needed. Home, family, and career will all see growth coming soon. The new moon activates forward motion; fresh beginnings. Reflect; release.
AQUARIUS: The spotlight falls on fun, creativity, and children. Financial specula tion isn’t favorable. Get ready for short trips, chats, and calls. New energy prompts quiet time for reflection and a deeper understanding.
PISCES: Homelife and family time is highlighted; cooperate and clarify. Options for growth in income for the new year. New directions for future plans and social life begin. Enjoy time with friends as you reconnect.
ARIES: The spotlight shines on travel near and far. Conversations are enlightening. You are favored and active as a new cycle in career opens options. REconsider offers as luck and transformation can take you far.
TAURUS: A focus on financial matters brings out what’s really important to you. Education and travel are enjoyable; with new opportunities awaiting. Spiritual growth comes through meditation, introspection, and creativity.
GEMINI: The full moon spotlight is on you; vitality, health, and expression. Relationships are active and social circle brings opportunities. The new lunar cycle begins a focus on resources; a REview can put you on track.
CANCER: Your private affairs are highlighted now. Health matters must be attended to. Changes in work are likely. Career opportunities will be coming. A new start in relationships occurs; REconnect and rejuvenate.
LEO: Social activities and time with friends are highlighted and energized. Work is enjoyable and busy. Education and travel options are coming soon. New wellness and work plans include modifications; releasing old habits.
VIRGO: Your career or position is highlighted but without clear direction. Luck comes in resourceful ways; finance. Romance may start new or return from the past. Reconnect with your creative self; enjoy children.
LIBRA: Travel and education are in the spotlight. Business and personal relation ships bring growth and opportunities. A new cycle begins with home and family; you get reacquainted and reminisce. Reflection on year’s end.
SCORPIO: Resources are highlighted; speculation has high risk. Work and health matters get support. Travel is enjoyable but may have delays. Reconnect and resolve in person or in conversations as the year closes.

ENCOURAGING WORDS
By Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones
After a period, the conscious mind tires, becomes bored or distracted, and caves in. If we want to introduce a genuine change in our lives in 2023, it’s not only our behavior we must change; it’s our consciousness or belief system that supports our behavior. This change can require time and mindful effort. To assist you, I offer three simple suggestions that will be helpful in assuring your successful arrival at the finish line of your highest intention in 2023.
It’s
Time To
Put 2022
“The New Year is a painting not yet painted; a path not yet stepped on; a wing not yet taken off! Things haven’t happened yet!
Before the clock strikes twelve, remember that you are blessed with the ability to reshape your life!”
~ Mehmet Murat ildan
Now that 2022 is in the review mirror, can you feel the energy of renewal calling you to prepare for the launch into 365 days of greater possibilities? The consensus from most of those with whom I have spoken is they can’t wait to say “bye-bye” to 2022. Much like spirited racehorses, many folks are already lining up at the starting gate of 2023 with unbridled enthusiasm, ready for the sprint to the finish line. My question is, are they running “into” a new year with vision, passion, and joy – or are they anxiously (fearfully) running “away from” the past year because 2022 was rife with so much pain and disappointment? Our perspective matters because the energy we generate around either of those perspectives will follow us into 2023 like our own shadow on a sunny day.
In
the Rearview Mirror Three Steps to a New You in the New Year
How to Make 2023 All It Can Be
Understanding the role, one’s consciousness (or belief system) plays in creating their experience of 2023, I am taking an intentional time-out this week to gain some clarity around this point; what part of the energetic imprint (memories attached to specific experiences) of 2022 will I choose to say “bye-bye” to and leave behind – and what part will I bring with me?
Just being aware that I have the power to make that choice metaphorically puts me in the driver ’s seat as I cruise down the highway, crossing the borderline of a new “state” of consciousness in a new year. For many people, it all begins with making a New Year’s resolution. I must admit, I gave up declaring resolutions years ago; I concluded they go in “one year” and out the other. Our resolutions rarely come to fruition because we cannot stay the course long enough to see the results; it takes time to manifest a change of consciousness. Ultimately, we come to realize that “will power” won’t win because it is usually short-lived and difficult to maintain.
1. BE GENTLE WITH YOURSELF when you fall down, backslide, or metaphorically go unconscious and take a snooze. The practice is not to beat yourself up; it’s getting back up and continuing to move in the direction you wish to go, one step at a time.
2. PACE YOURSELF with some form of measurable results. Consider using a goal sheet and journal to daily log your progress, celebrating the small steps with certain earmark accomplishments (goals) along the way.
3. DON’T SHARE YOUR GOALS with the trolls; do not share your intentions with those who will try to undermine your success. DO, however, invite a loving and trusted friend, counselor, or mentor to hold you accountable and be your faithful cheerleader.
As you enter the new year, may you inscribe these words of Nido Qubein in your heart and mind: “Your present circumstances don’t determine where you can go. They merely determine where you start.” May 2023 be the year you intend it to be. May you find the courage to start where you are and stay the course leading to fulfillment of your heart’s greatest desires. Remember, success is not always about who wins the race; it’s about who finishes
