From the Publishers We can’t imagine a more rewarding career than publishing Paradise NEWS for more than the past quarter century. We have had the opportunity to meet and do business with some of the best businesses in the area. We are known to and appreciated by residents and elected officials from the beaches through downtown to St. Petersburg’s eastern shore, in Tallahassee and Washington. It is not a career path without challenges! William Randolph Hearst started his publishing career with The San Francisco Examiner and $80 million from the Homestake Silver Mine his daddy gave him for his 21st birthday. He would have gone bankrupt had his mistress not given him her savings to go on. The only quote I recall from his autobiography is “You can come out of the publishing business with a small fortune if you start with a big enough one.” Not having a wealthy mistress, I have had to be more conservative. Hearst is credited with starting the Spanish-American War. Most of what we have accomplished is much more local and way more peaceful. We moved to St. Pete Beach 35 years ago, when our only son, Jordan, was a freshman boarder at Admiral Farragut Academy. Pete’s maternal grandfather had done well in life and wanted to help provide his great-grandchildren a better education than they might get otherwise. Jordan had boarded at Admiral Farragut and, as an only child, liked the education, but found living there confining. So, Renee and I decided to move close enough for him to be a day student. We held on to the home we moved from, knowing we would be back. That has been Jordan’s home, while we made a life for ourselves here. We had not realized the differences we would find, living at the beach rather than an hour inland. We found the weather better, the people are easier going, more fun-loving and there are a wealth of entertainment options with way less traffic jams than inland. After starting Paradise NEWS here, we planned to stay indefinitely. Jordan is 50 this summer. What I did not realize at the time was how rewarding owning a home on the barrier islands would be. We were going to rent while Jordan finished high school but owning a home in Pass-a-Grille turned out to be a better option. We bought our first beach home, a 1930’s vintage all-wood home on 30th Ave., at the north end of Pass-a-Grille. Twelve years later, when we sold it for double, it gave us back ALL of the payments we had ever made on it, including principal, interest, taxes, and even insurance. Our second home in north St. Pete Beach is now worth more than three times what we paid 22 years ago. It may be like that all over the state today, but having lived “in Paradise” for 30 years feels like a blessing from heaven. Paradise NEWS has done its part to allow us to live here, and vacation once or twice each year, so it has truly been a symbiotic relationship. We publish monthly except in July and September, so in this issue we have tried to condense two months worth of information into a single issue. We mail 20,000+ copies to valuable residences at the beaches and downtown St. Petersburg, and distribute at least 10,000 more print copies in 400+ racks and stacks to reach visitors and other interested residents. Reaching 100,000+ in print, online, social media, web content, weekly eblasts, and more! We value advertisers that can be trusted to do a great job at a fair price and are always looking for new ones for our readers, because our advertisers often get too busy to continue to advertise. If you know someone who does a great job for you, and needs more business let us know about each other. We treasure our regular readers who make our labor worthwhile.

SunRunner to Stimulate Development Around Stations The SunRunner bus rapid transit (BRT) is expected to start running from downtown to SPB beach in August. To increase walkability and economic activity at select nodes, which would also support BRT ridership, Kimley-Horn, a planning and design consultant based in North Carolina, developed a transit-oriented development study called “SunRunner Rising.” Forward Pinellas recently discussed the study, and the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority board members voted on it May 25. By Peter Roos the brand new St. Pete Beach police headquarters on July 9, 1997. It should be interesting to see the changes in the past quarter century. For example, the police department was eliminated and its headquarters was demolished after the city embraced the Sheriff’s department, saving the city millions annually. There should be a copy of Paradise NEWS in there, probably with details about the last big concert in Pass-a-Grille. The Spin Doctors were a relatively unknown band that was booked as the last concert of a Spring Concert Series. The venue at Sand Key Park had a scheduling conflict, and promoters learned about the new Gulf Beaches Historical Museum needing a roof, so the venue was changed to Pass-aGrille. The very same night, a better known band, Three Dog Night, was playing at the Tierra Verde Club made famous by Guy Lombardo. As luck would have it, the Spin Doctors had their one big hit two weeks before the concert date and 10,000 people wanted to be at the concert. Another couple thousand were headed to Tierra Verde. About half made it. Many of the rest parked where they were and walked. The ensuing traffic snarl was epic, blocking the interstate exit at the Pinellas Bayway for ¼ mile in each direction. The Museum raised $16,000 in four hours. If you have not eaten in at Basil Leaf, 6355 Gulf Blvd., lately, you are in for a surprise. It looks more like Nori Thai and less like Annie Moore’s Irish Pub now. Owners Joy Xavagong has redecorated with granite, slate and Joy’s favorite colors. Dolphin Beach Resort sold SCG Beach Hospitably, led by the Bucaneers’ Co-Chair Bryan Glazer, purchased the Dolphin Beach Resort, with plans to renovate. In August 2018 the Glazers acquired The Vinoy Resort & Golf Club in downtown St. Petersburg for $188.5 million, or $512,000/ room. The Vinoy resort is undergoing a massive renovation and repositioning. Phase 1 is scheduled to complete at the end of this year. The Plasencia Group helped with this transaction and the sale of “more than 2,500 rooms across the Sunshine State in the past year, at an average value of nearly $350,000/room,” according to The Plasencia Group. “We look forward to seeing what the Glazers have in store for this generational resort that holds a spot of pride in the heart of St. Pete Beach.”
A Road on the Sand? At the suggestion of staff, city commissioners will consider a new and all-encompassing beach ordinance that incorporates new regulations for using St. Pete Beach’s sandy beach. A draft ordinance submitted to the city’s Beach Stewardship Committee states that permits to drive on the beach will be restricted to public works and public safety vehicles, those involved in permitted commercial activities or special events, and those involved in mechanical beach cleaning. RELOCATION ADVISOR Simplifying Senior Housing Transitions Many Paradise News readers are house rich. They are living in homes that have appreciated in value to the point that calls come daily, mostly from scammers “representing a local real estate investor” who want to make you an offer to buy your house. With costs of everything rising, many of those living on fixed incomes are tempted to tap the equity in the homes. The biggest question on everyone’s mind is “When you live in Paradise, where do you go next?” Then “What do I do with all my stuff?” Wouldn’t it be nice if one of those realtors out there had a system for navigating seniors through housing transitions? Allow me to introduce Sandy Bartow. Sandy says an unsolicited phone caller is definitely not the right person to sell your most expensive asset. A valued member of Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, with 25 years of hospitality and real estate experience in Texas, upstate New York, Georgia and Florida, Sandy is well-versed in all aspects of real estate. Besides being an expert in listing and selling on all platforms, she is a relocation specialist focused on home transition services for seniors.
By Peter Roos
“Buying or selling real estate is one of the most personal and emotional investments we can experience in our lives. A home is not simply an address...it has a profound effect on our sense of well-being. “My goal is providing my clients with a positive and unparalleled real estate experience. I work with a team of specialists to help seniors with the transition from single-family homes to senior living communities,” said Sandy. “My services include the preparation and sale of the current home as well as providing resources, guidance and support for seniors and their families when identifying a new community to call home. A senior living specialist will assess and accompany the client(s) to visit communities that fit their personal needs and desires. A move management professional will map out sorting, distribution, packing, moving, and unpacking. When needed, an estate sales agent/appraiser will assist in the valuation and sale of items remaining after a downsizing plan is established.” When not helping seniors transition or matchmaking buyers and sellers for the perfect home transaction, Sandy is passionate about involvement in the community. You might find her volunteering with Habitat for Humanity or Tampa Bay
Watch, or engaging in fundraising, clothing and food drives for the homeless and the mentally ill. Her efforts also support the Seaside Seabird Sanctuary, and our furry friends at the SPCA. Even golfing, which Sandy loves, is often tied to an event for a good cause. Sandy brings transparency, professionalism, and enthusiasm to every transaction, priding herself on a personal touch approach, guiding both buyers and sellers through a process that can otherwise be complicated and overwhelming. She is a proven negotiator and solutions-based professional who meets every challenge with a positive attitude and an open mind, with a goal of maximizing the bottom line for her clients on each transaction. Her qualifications and certifications include Accredited Buyer’s Representative (ABR) and Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES) and an extensive background in relocation. If you are ready to consider your next move and are looking for an experienced, knowledgeable, and trustworthy local real estate agent to help you with your transition, contact Sandy today! Join USF in the Fight Against Alzheimer’s Disease The University of South
Florida PACT (Preventing Alzheimer’s with Cognitive Training) study needs healthy volunteers to join the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. The study focuses on using computerized brain training exercises with the hope to reduce dementia risk. If you or a loved one are interested in more information, please visit the PACT study website, www.pactstudy.org or call 727-873-4090. The USF PACT team is looking for 3,000 healthy volunteers to combat the growing incidence of dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease. PACT is currently enrolling adults aged 65 and older with no signs of cognitive impairment, dementia, or neurological disorders. Once accepted into the study, participants will begin their exercises at a PACT site in St. Petersburg, Tampa, Winter Haven, or Lakeland. Past research shows that computerized training can help maintain mental and physical function. Healthy older adults who were prescribed 10 sessions of such training had a 29% lower risk of

dementia after 10 years. Those completing additional training benefited even more: they were 48% less likely to show signs of dementia 10 years later. Alzheimer’s disease affects an estimated 6.2 million Americans, including 1 in 9 people aged 65 and older, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. This number is projected to nearly triple to 14 million by 2060. African Americans and Hispanics are especially encouraged to enroll in PACT, as they are nearly twice as likely to suffer from dementia. As of today, there are no proven cures or treatments that stop the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia. The few medications currently on the market only provide short-term management of symptoms for those who already have dementia. This is why studies like PACT are so important. For those currently enrolled in the study, the entire PACT team appreciates your contribution to science and your efforts in fighting Alzheimer’s disease.

HOLISTIC HEALTH
By Camilla Nichols, M.S.
Balance Your Life A healthy diet is just one element of our well-being. Your daily food intake – which should contribute to wellness – may be adversely impacted by other factors. With regard to food, is your body assimilating what you eat? Can you digest it? What about the emotional and social elements that we consume?
fast food, no time to walk or rest. This leads to imbalance.
Our well-being goes beyond what we eat. The physical body is affected by stress and anxiety from family, work, what we listen to, watch, read, think and the people we interact with. Many of my clients tell me about the stress factors that prevent them from doing what they know they should do for their health. Too many demands lead to
We need to learn to Be Still and take time for ourselves. Balance applies to so many aspects of a serene and successful life. If we do not prioritize ourselves we will not have balance. We must learn to prioritize our well-being – physically, emotionally and spiritually. It’s ok to choose you. You can’t save someone else if you don’t put on your oxygen mask or life vest first.
“take some time to get in touch with yourself.” Ask, what are you consuming – not just food – that does not feed you? Keep a journal of everything that impacts your well-being. We all deserve to live well with love, laughter, joy, and good health. You are the one who gets to choose. Choose you. Each morning tell yourself: I love myself, I honor myself, I will take care of myself. Then do it!
How do we take the time to Be Still? Sit outside with no phone. Sit with yourself. Breathe. Listen to your body. What is it trying to tell you? Listen. Quiet, for just 15 minutes, your racing mind and concerns. Analyze your day. What has drained you? What has uplifted you? What has fed you physically, emotionally or spiritually? Why not make your summer mantra

LIVE LIFE BETTER By Nanette Wiser
Exercise & Joint Pain
Motion is lotion and the right low-impact exercises such as swimming and walking can ease arthritis pain and stiffness. It increases strength and flexibility, reduces joint pain, controls weight, improves balance and helps combat fatigue. Lack of exercise actually makes your joints more painful and stiff. The muscles and surrounding tissue help maintain support for your bones, and not exercising weakens those supporting muscles and stresses your joints. Talk with your doctor before starting an arthritis exercise program, then consider what’s within your limits and what level of exercise will work best for the joints involved. They might recommend a physical therapist to help you develop the right exercise program that might include range of motion, strengthening, aerobic exercises or other activities such as walking the dog. Range-of-motion exercises relieve stiffness and increase your ability to move your joints through their full range of motion. These exercises might include movements such as raising your arms over your head or rolling your shoulders forward and backward. In most cases, these exercises can be done daily. Strengthening exercises such as weight training can help you build strong muscles that help support and protect your joints. Low-impact aerobic exercise such as walking, bicycling, swimming, and using an elliptical machine can help improve cardiovascular health, control weight, improve stamina and energy. Body awareness exercises, such as yoga or tai chi can help improve balance, prevent falls, improve posture and coordination, and promote relaxation. Be sure to tell your instructor about your condition and avoid positions or movements that can cause pain. Start slowly to ease your joints gently into exercise if you haven’t been active for a while. If you push yourself too hard, you can overwork your muscles and worsen your joint pain. If you feel pain, take a break. Slow down if you notice swelling or redness in your joints. Before you begin, apply warm heat to relax your joints and relieve any pain for about 20 minutes. After exercising, apply ice to your joints for up to 20 minutes. With joint pain, you want to stay hydrated and reduce inflammation by avoiding heavily processed foods, red meat, foods high in sugar or MSG, fried foods, alcohol, refined carbohydrates, gluten, and purines.

Prostate Health
“Talk with your doctor about what is best for you and see your doctor right away if you have any symptoms.” Good Offense Is Best Defense For Prostate Problems June is National Men’s Health Month. As men age, their risk for prostate cancer increases, and the American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends that men make an informed decision with their healthcare provider about being screened. After discussing the uncertainties, risks, and potential benefits of prostate cancer screening, men who want to be screened should get a PSA blood test and a digital rectal exam may also be recommended. Medicare pays for one prostate cancer screening test each year. Check with your provider and plan for coverage details.
Our Physicians Specialize in Medicare Quality Programs Establish with our primary-care physician today to get the most out of your healthcare.
In men who report prostate symptoms, PSA testing and digital rectal examination can help determine the nature of the problem. Talk with your doctor about what is best for you and see your doctor right away if you have any of these symptoms: • • • • • •
Frequent urge to urinate Need to get up many times during the night to urinate Blood in urine or semen Pain or burning urination Painful ejaculation Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, pelvic or rectal area, or upper thighs • Dribbling of urine Men 50 and older are at a higher risk for prostate cancer and the ACS says, about six in 10 cases are diagnosed in men 65 or older. The average age of diagnosis is about 66. Not all prostate issues are cancer. Other common prostate problems include prostatitis, which is an inflammation, or swelling, of the prostate, and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) which is an enlarged prostate due to something other than cancer. The National Institutes of Health report that researchers have not found proven ways to prevent prostate problems, but a good offense is the best defense. Recognizing symptoms and having an open discussion with your primary-care provider can help you get early treatment with the best possible outcomes. Do you ever wonder what it is that makes some doctors so incredibly compassionate while others have a bedside manner better suited for the DMV? In the case of Dr. Rebecca Gibbons, RN, DOM, AP of AAIM | Achieve Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine it is a case of true empathy. “I worked in hospitals as an RN for over 15 years and saw how patients suffered from pain and other chronic conditions. Some people were able to find relief with medications, injections or surgeries but many times we would see them comeback within days, weeks or months. I saw their lives were not only filled with discomfort but their days were filled with doctors appointments, hospital stays, ER visits, prescription refills and physical therapy. That is no way to live. Not only does it take a toll on the person but it also takes a toll on their family members as well.”
Dr. Gibbons also had a personal experience with pain. “I had suffered from severe back pain and did not feel comfortable taking medications because of the way they made me feel. A friend recommended I see an acupuncturist. After a series of treatments I was able to get relief from the pain. I was able to sleep again and the anxiety that I was feeling had also subsided.” After her incredible experience with the healing arts she made the life changing decision to become an Acupuncture Physician, “acupuncture quite literally changed my life and I want to share that with as many people as I can,” she proclaims.

“”As an RN, I saw so many people who had been given a disheartening prognosis, prescribed medications and told ‘this is just something your are going to have to learn to live with.’ But now as an Acupuncture Physician, I am able to integrate both eastern and western medicine to treat those who have chronic pain, neuropathy and other chronic conditions.” Understanding that Eastern Medicine excels where Western Medicine fails, Dr. Gibbons set forth to develop treatment protocols for all variations of Peripheral Neuropathy (including diabetic and chemotherapy‐induced) and back pain and now has an 80% success rate in treating this once difficult to manage condition.
Dr. Rebecca Gibbons has a long history of treating complicated, difficult to understand conditions. She understands how tragic it can be if left untreated. Dr. Gibbons and her staff specialize in treating chronic pain, complicated neurological conditions, autoimmune diseases and infertility that may leave other professionals scratching their heads.

A Couple Favorite CBD things…. Oh the humidity is back in grand fashion! The cooler breeze in the evenings makes sitting on the porch and visiting with friends a pleasant summertime activity. The cool air conditioning in my shop makes me so grateful we live with air conditioning! I always think of those pioneer woman who lived in Florida before it’s invention. I was not meant to be one of those women!! Feeling grateful about some of my favorite things, I started thinking about my favorites of the CBD products we have in the store. The Goods carries CBD gummies with 15mg, which come in several flavors. They have no taste of nature (as my mom puts it) and taste very good. My favorite is watermelon. I love this company - they are located just north of Seattle. I have used them personally for several years. They have organic, very high quality, third party lab tested products. I always think of them as the Cadillac in the industry. You can carry the gummies with you and if you find you are getting stressed you can pop one in your mouth and watch the calming ingredient keep you balanced. We have many customers who swear by these and show up to buy them weekly! The second is the Freeze therapy gel that has 2,000mg of CBD and is full of essential oils. It is a newer product that we have started carrying at The Goods. Freeze therapy gel is amazing for pain. I love the quality of hemp these farmers produce. The farmers are both veterans and decided to go into hemp farming together. Designed for use on areas of muscle and joint pain and inflammation, it is organically grown, full spectrum CBD and filled with lots of essential oils. It provides instant cooling and is fast acting. I have been sampling it in the shop and people have found it very effective. My mom and has been using it daily on her thumb with arthritis and gotten complete relief. We are so excited to announce our new educational and tasting program – The Goods Gatherings. Schedule a time with us by calling the store or next time you are in the shop; let’s get it on the schedule. Bring four or five of your friends and I will sit down with you and talk about cannabis, answer your questions, share my story, and hand out samples of some of our products. I am committed to providing organic, high-quality, third-party lab-tested products for my clients. I help customers with combining solid cannabis science and my own life experience. I look forward to seeing you soon at: The Goods. CBD. Hemp. Relief. 2939 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, FL 33713. Our store number is 727-289-6020. Manatee aggregation at Blue Spring State Park, a warm water refuge for manatees during cold weather.
RECORD MANATEE DEATHS spur Florida funding of $30 MILLION Story by STEVE TRAIMAN Photos courtesy Save the Manatee Club Archive Florida manatee deaths are at more than 500 in just the first four months of 2022, a toll nearly equal to the fifthdeadliest year on record, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
The funding will direct nearly $25 million to expand and upgrade the network of acute care centers, such as those run by Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park (see accompanying sidebar) and SeaWorld Orlando; restore manatee access to springs; restore seagrass and other habitat conditions where they concentrate; and expand rescue and rehabilitation capacity.
This comes after a disastrous report released by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) earlier Save the Manatee Club founders Jimmy Buffett (left) this year. From January 1 to and former Florida governor Bob Graham (right, in Sea World tee). December 31, 2021, preliminary The $25 million also will underwrite experimental responses data shows that there were 1,101 reported manatee deaths such as the program to feed lettuce to manatees in Brevard in the state – nearly double the five-year average – with most County that recently ended. dying of starvation. Of the more than 1,000 deaths, the state found 103 of them were watercraft-related, seven were crushed or drowned in flood gates and canal locks, and another seven were killed by human-related causes, such as poaching or rope entanglement. More than half of the deceased manatees were not necropsied, or their cause of death has been undetermined. Only about 6,000 manatees left in all of Florida, the nonprofit organization Save the Manatee Club previously told CBS News. With that high rate of mortalities as a backdrop, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced May 2 in Jacksonville he will sign off on more than $30 million in manatee care, rehabilitation and other support allocated recently by the legislature. Co-sponsors of the House bill were Representatives Darren Soto (D, 9th District) and Vern Buchanan (R, 16th District). “This historic funding will support important restoration efforts across the state to benefit our manatees and Florida’s natural environment,” DeSantis said. 22
JUNE/JULY 2022 | ParadiseNewsFL.com
Another $5.3 million will bolster manatee response abilities, including hiring 12 more employees for the FWC. About $160,000 will support increased aerial surveys of manatees. The Save the Manatee Club praised the funding as a needed step in the right direction for a wildlife disaster that state and federal agencies refer to as an “unusual mortality event.” “Due to the unprecedented severity of the ongoing Unusual Mortality Event (UME) – in which more than 1,600 manatees have died statewide over the last 16 months – these and additional extraordinary measures are called for in order to protect manatees and their critical habitat,” said Patrick Rose, the group’s executive director. (Save the Manatee Club was started in 1981 by singersongwriter Jimmy Buffett & former Florida Gov. and U.S. Senator Bob Graham. Its mission is to protect endangered manatees and their habitat for future generations. You are encouraged to join the Club and participate in the annual Manatee Run & Walk.

ZOO TAMPA at Lowry Park
As an example,“Environmental conditions in portions of the Indian River Lagoon remain a concern,” the state’s FWC says on its website.“Researchers have attributed this UME to starvation due to the lack [of] seagrasses in the Indian River Lagoon. In recent years, poor water quality in the Lagoon has led to harmful algal blooms and widespread seagrass loss.” The state says that “most of the seagrass in the Indian River Lagoon has disappeared,” and that the lagoon has seen declining rates of seagrass, a staple food for manatees, since 2011. The lagoon has been hit by several algal blooms since that time, which reduces the amount of light able to hit the water and allows seagrass and other aquatic plant life to grow. “The effects of prolonged starvation are detrimental,” the FWC says on its website, and can result in organ atrophy, metabolic and reproductive shutdown, decreased mobility and susceptibility to disease. In January, Florida Fish and Wildlife initiated a supplemental feeding trial in the northern area of the lagoon, where most of the deceased manatees have been found, to provide “some aid” to manatees. The state wildlife commission and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service set up their emergency feeding program at a Florida Power & Light Co. power plant south of Titusville where manatees gather during winter cold snaps. “We must insist that the state of Florida and the Environmental Protection Agency join forces to ensure that improved water quality standards are set and met if we are going to restore these aquatic ecosystems for the long-term future,” Save the Manatee Club’s Rose said. Zoo Tampa team readies rehabbed manatee for return to wild.
For 30 years, Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park has been widely known for caring for critically injured, sick, and orphaned manatees at the David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center. Molly Lipincott, a Zoo Tampa curator, told Paradise NEWS, “This vulnerable species has been at the heart of our commitment to the conservation of Florida wildlife. “Our animal care and veterinary teams are often called upon to assist in the field with rescuing orphaned, sick or injured manatees. When a concerned citizen spots a manatee they think may be in trouble, we respond. Since 1991, we have treated over 500 manatees and have returned more than 280 of them to their native waters. Manatees are strong, resilient, and can overcome some of the most severe injuries with the care that they receive at our Critical Care Center. “There’s nothing more rewarding than when a manatee has fully recovered and is ready to return into its natural habitat. It is an awe-inspiring and often emotional moment for the team and our community when a manatee is released, sometimes after many years of care and rehabilitation. “Our Center was the country’s first nonprofit, acute care facility of its kind specifically dedicated to critical care of wild manatees and is one of just four manatee rehabilitation centers in the state of Florida. As manatee patients recover, our visitors can see this life-saving care in real time in the recovery pools of Manatee Mangrove. “To enhance animal welfare and expand our mission to save Florida wildlife, we recently completed an upgrade to the water filtration system at our David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center. This upgraded life support system allows us to provide advanced, specialized care to our patients, and enables us to treat even the most severe cases.”

This is the space for you during the day to enjoy a drink, some space, and watch the parade travel by. At night South Straub will be transformed into a women and non-binary pop-up night club from 7-10pm. Entertainment lineup to be announced. Across the way in Spa Beach will be another opportunity to enjoy Parade Day. Vendors, food trucks, and beverage stations will line Spa Beach leading up to the main entertainment stage. Entertainment will run from 2-3:45pm. At 4pm the Parade will step off; don’t want to be in the crowd but do want to watch the Parade? Join us on Spa Beach for a livestream of the Parade to the main stage screen. Watch on your blanket for a more laidback experience. ARTISTIC DESTINATION The Gabriel Miami features provocative and eccentric photography by Alberto Van Stokkum throughout the hotel’s public spaces, adding an artistic touch to the property’s design features. Known for his work in Vogue, Van Stokkum’s pieces are often described as wild and experimental. Alberto captures the fun, cheeky side of his models, possessing a gift for releasing the inhibitions of his subject. In addition to the photography displayed throughout the hotel, The Gabriel Miami has partnered with Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) to showcase its collection of artists and exhibitions. This creates an opportunity for hotel guests to gaze at the artwork in the lobby screen through a series of videos on display – just across the street from the museum itself.

SARASOTA HOPS The Sarasota area boasts brew-tastic craft tasting spots. Check out Lakewood Ranch’s Good Liquid Brewing Company which won Gold during the annual Best Florida Beer Competition with Peachy O’Rings Smoothie Style Sour. We also like Craft Growlers To Go & Tasting Room and Scullers Draft House. Calusa Brewing is a deep-sea-themed veteran-owned brewery with an epic logo featuring the mystical Kraken (octopus) creature producing amazing unfiltered, hops-forward beers and mixed-fermentation – including locally-acclaimed cans and kegs of Zote, The Rip, and Citronius IPAs, as well as oak-aged wild ales. The quirky circus-themed Big Top Brewing Company’s seasonal beers (Ringmaster Raspberry Berliner Weiss) and my fave, Circus City IPA, are Florida-flavored winners. Also, check out 99 Bottles Taproom & Bottleshop, Origin Craft Beer & Pizza Cafe, Cock & Bull Farmhouse Pub, Mandeville Beer Garden, Shakespeare’s Craft Beer & Pub, Brewster’s, and Pizza N’ Brew. BOOK NOOK
By Deb Carson Gary Mormino by Deanna Salt
America’s political destiny, replete with hanging chads that decided the outcome of the new century’s first presidential election.
Do you know we have a national treasure living among us right here in Paradise? Author, eminent historian, and Florida scholar Gary R. Mormino’s latest book reads like fiction but isn’t. Dreams in the New Century delivers to those who’ve lived the Florida-life as natives, or for decades, but especially for newcomers, a must-read. Following his landmark story of our state from 1950 to 2000 in Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams: A Social History of Modern Florida, Mormino’s newest takes readers on the 10-year bumpy ride that begins in 2000 with Florida at the millennial crossroads of
Mormino covers 9/11 and the terrorists who trained first in Florida, landscape and human-altering hurricanes, Great Recession, the curious rise of Rubio, Scott & Trump, Ponzi schemes, the Elián González FBI stand-off in Little Havana, tests of “Stand Your Ground” law, the sad decline of our singular once-gin-clear springs and waterways, all book-ended by the culmination of another historic election, that of our nation’s first African American president. The tumultuous period filled with tensions and turning points that Mormino argues as Florida’s “Big Bang” details how the events of those years held significance for the rest of our nation, indeed the planet – and still does. Subtitled Instant Cities, Shattered Hopes and Florida’s Turning Point, Mormino’s book is a stunning read and cautionary tale for Florida’s future, but in true Mormino spirit, filled with enduring love and hope for our collective place – our extraordinary state of Florida. “I can hope. We can hope,” he says.

Travels through Property Law by Tom Brodersen, Esq.
If they can rip off William Webster…… they can rip off anyone. “ I was a federal judge,” William Webster said. “I was the director of the FBI, director of the CIA, and I was the target of an elder fraud scheme.” Mr. Webster is older now, actually 98. He and his wife Lynda Webster were scared to death by someone who called him on his cell phone and made threats.
a wonderful opportunity to help a Nigerian King move money out of his country. “Scammers will spend many hours and days talking to their targets, getting to know them, offering them friendship and even the promise of love,” Lynda Webster said. “They are skillful con artists, and family members and close friends should be aware.”
Cell phones are wonderful devices that make our lives better in so many ways, but they are also something else, something darker. They are a way into your head, a way to penetrate locked doors and every security device you and your family can fashion to protect yourself. All a scammer has to do is get you to answer. Americans tend to be polite, and when someone calls you on the phone and starts talking to you, we tend to believe them, and listen to what they have to say.
Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, or any other arm of the government. They are just people who don’t want to work for a living like everyone else, they just want to fool you, manipulate you, and get you to give them what is yours.
But we need to remember, this person on the phone is no one you know. They are probably NOT who they claim to be, and their only goal is to con you out of money or property. No matter what they claim, they are NOT from the IRS, they are NOT from

HOME COOKING Seedless watermelon is the ultimate refresher – good for your body and delicious in a salad or a martini or frozen in ice cube trays for cocktails.

Impress Your Guests at Your Next Event
It’s also healthy. Watermelon is rich in lycopene, an antioxidant linked to decreased risk of cancer, heart disease and age-related eye disorders. It also is rich in citrulline, an amino acid that helps move blood through your body and may lower your blood pressure. Because 90% of a watermelon’s weight is water, it’s one of the best fruits for weight loss; a 100-gram serving contains only 30 calories. WATERMELON FETA SALAD Cube and strain watermelon while prepping other ingredients. In a small bowl, whisk all dressing ingredients together, then set aside. Add the cubed watermelon and fresh mint to a large bowl. Toss dressing, transfer to salad and crumble cheese on top. Mangia! Salad Ingredients: 6 cups cubed watermelon, 4 oz. crumbled feta, crumbled, ½ cup fresh chopped mint Dressing Ingredients: 2 tbsp. olive oil, juice of 1.5 limes, ½ tsp sea salt, ¼ tsp black pepper WATERMELON MARTINI To make the watermelon juice, blend, and strain. (Freeze the fruit pulp in ice pop trays for a refreshing snack). Combine vodka, watermelon juice, cranberry juice, lime juice, simple syrup to a shaker filled with ice. Shake well and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a lime wheel and slice of watermelon Ingredients: 1.5 oz vodka (I like Grey Goose, Stoly), 1 oz. watermelon juice, .25 oz. cranberry juice, .25 oz. fresh lime juice, .25 oz. Simple Syrup

When Nancy Westphal’s son John Ruetz, formerly with Steve and Nancy at 400 Beach, took over Three Birds Tavern, we knew we were in for a treat. Dining and drinking inside or on the wrap-around dog-friendly patio is a delight as is the Mon.-Thurs. happy hour 3-6pm (1/2 price draft beer, house wines and wells; $2 off other drinks). The food and service are amazing, and we adore their $5 martini specials, even blue for the Bolts. Start off with Mahi fish cake with chipotle aioli, Asian barbecue wings or Guinness Gravy Fries. The salmon, grouper and grilled beef tenderloin entrees go beyond pub food but save room for the peanut butter pie. My favorite is the ground lamb burger with red wine, garlic & oregano, topped with feta cheese, tzatziki sauce, red onion, greens & tomato.

DINING
Nash’s
For a quickie, I say yay for Po’ Folks’ catfish or Shrimp n’ Cheese Grits topped with bacon, hush puppies, turnip greens and a side of Homer’s Favorite Buttermilk Dressin’.
Southern salads are a tradition, and a cool alternative to a heavy lunch, especially at The Mill, where the Southern Belle brims with romaine, red onion, candied pecans, sage derby, peppadews, dried apricots, Southern fried chicken drizzled with Honeycup Vinaigrette. Also, be sure to try The Mill’s crispy fried okra basket with buttermilk vinaigrette and sriracha aioli. St. Pete’s Ray’s Vegan Soul plant-based dishes are inspired, and seasonal menus change weekly. We love Chef Ray’s creamed spinach, vegan seafood cakes with grits, cauliflower casserole and most especially the red velvet cupcake or peach cobbler when it’s on the menu. Order ahead for SOUL TO GO Sundays pick-up at 1330 49th St. S. Dunedin’s Prohibition Kitchen + Tap is a Southern Comfort Gastropub (with a twist) bringing you BBQ-inspired dishes, handcrafted cocktails, 37 Taps, and an in-house bakery. You can dine on the artist-inspired patio, also dog-friendly. Start with the Smoked Brisket Sweet Potato Waffle Fries with tomato bacon jam, smoked gouda, chipotle white sauce, scallions, then add a side of bourbon belly baked beans or fried corn bread fritter.
DESSERT For real peach cobbler, I order online from Aunt Evelyn’s who learned to make beautiful pies and cobblers like her grandmother Iva while growing up in Georgia. Order in a jar or enough for the family. www.auntevelynspeachcobbler.com

LINNER That’s lunch or dinner folks, or in between. For smokey collard greens, my neighborhood go-to is Seminole’s Angry Pepper. Get clucking with Thirsty First’s Captain Crunch-crusted Buffalo hot chicken or Nash’s Hot Chicken and bacon braised collard greens. Also yummy is 2nd and Second’s Nashville style hot chicken fried chicken coated in sweet garlic hot paste, pickles, American on grilled white bread
BBQ is very personal, but Dr. BBQ’s quirky menu, delectable meats/sauces, the ultimate dessert (Sweet Banana Pudding Parfait) and cool crafted bourbon cocktails can’t be beat.

BREAKFAST For biscuits and gravy, chow down at Trip’s Diner, Maple St. Biscuit Company, Bob Evans, Frog Pond (add the chicken and waffles) and at The Mill, also serving a Low Country Benny (biscuit, collard greens, poached eggs, sausage gravy).
Carolina sauce BBQ is divine. Wash it down with a Southern Mule (Jack Daniels, lime, dram simple and ginger beer). Delish!

Why not start our Southern Heritage culinary tour right here, right now in Paradise? From downtown St. Pete to the beaches, we sampled new-wave Southern dishes and soul food. Here are some of our faves.
Best fried green tomatoes? Our vote goes to Urban Brew & BBQ cornmeal dredged fried green tomato (FGT) served with a peppercorn dressing or the FGT- BLT, best paired with a sweet potato souffle, collard greens and melt-in-your-mouth fried chicken. Also downtown, Munche’s Sundries & Restaurant is a good spot for fried chicken and collard greens.
Urban Brew & BBQ
SOUTHERN WITH A TWIST This summer, I hope to dine at Tennessee’s Blackberry Farms and in Savannah’s restaurants and fulfill my gourmet desire to sup and sip the best of Southern Living including sausage gravy and buttermilk biscuits, bacon wedge salad with blue cheese dressing, succulent BBQ, fried chicken or green tomatoes, bacony collard greens and peach cobbler. I want to meet the artisans who bring farm to fork – chef, gardener, baker, forager, butcher – and learn their special dishes’ evolution. Did the recipe come from grandma? Or a church cookbook? The Inquisitive Tongue will share all in the fall.

Coming soon is Butcher’s revised edition of his earlier National Parks book that includes larger images, additional photos, and reflections of his experiences traveling through 34 national parks and preserves. From the redwood forests of California to the Everglade swamps of Florida, Clyde captures the essence of our natural spaces and treasured landscapes. He shares his personal connections while experiencing these protected lands, hoping these beautiful images of our nation’s parks and preserves will stir others to want to explore nature’s beauty and inspire others to become advocates for protecting these public lands for future generations. These images examine the power and fragility of the natural world in a way that invites renewed introspection of one’s own relationship with nature. We had the pleasure of meeting eco-warrior Clyde Butcher at a book signing and talk. His photographs reveal wild and natural places where few humans have ventured, with images capturing remarkable solitude and wonder.
Through July 31, The James Museum hosts an homage to nature: ANSEL ADAMS: THE MASTERWORKS & CLYDE BUTCHER: AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL, two masters of landscape photography showcasing the beauty, grandeur, and complexity of the American landscape as interpreted by Adams and Butcher through a series of distinctive, meticulously rendered black and white photographs.
His large-scale dramatic images are a valued artistic expression of what we have, and what we might lose if we do not protect our environment. Butcher grew up in California and later relocated to Florida, finding peace and his life’s mission within the Everglades. Butcher is an ambassador to the arts and environment, a diplomat of the remaining wild places, and an emissary to the hearts and minds of Americans to protect our country’s natural places. “Many people regard Clyde Butcher as the Ansel Adams of Florida,” said Emily Kapes, Curator of Art at The James Museum. “But this exhibition shows such a variety of his stunning landscapes from all over the country. His perspectives are just incredible.”

We asked St. Pete resident and our favorite foodie friend Jerry Notaro to share with PN how St. Pete Pride got its start. One of St. Pete Pride’s earliest torchbearers, he was intimately involved in the annual June celebration’s nascent beginning. Notaro served as the St. Pete Pride’s Board Secretary, historian, and archivist. He came to USF St. Petersburg as an openly gay librarian and has championed gay rights and related human rights issues for decades. He participated in an early 1979 gay pride parade in New York that commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and took part in the first gay pride parade in Pinellas County in 1989 at Williams Park. Nearly 50 people attended; three decades later, St. Pete’s Pride celebration today is the largest in Florida with events throughout the month.

JUNE PRIDE in ST. PETE
JUNE/JULY 2022 | ParadiseNewsFL.com
Prior to Notaro’s 2012 retirement from USFSP, he donated his St. Pete Pride photos and ephemera to that university’s Nelson Poynter Library. Housed there, the St. Pete Pride History Collection honor’s Notaro’s gift: The Gerald A. Notaro Collection of St. Pete Pride Archives: A Collection Guide. www.digitalcommons.usf.edu/scua_finding_aid_all/61/ Says Notaro: “It began with a Promenade…” which set in motion the birth of St. Pete Pride, according to the founding organization of the same name, which details the event’s history on its website. “In 2003, when Tampa’s pride parade was effectively shut down by legislators, the St. Petersburg community picked up the torch. That first Pride Promenade has turned into a month-long celebration, featuring activities across the city. And today, St. Pete Pride is the biggest Pride celebration in the state of Florida and ranked in the top 40 largest Pride celebrations in the world!” Quick to credit others, Notaro says of friend and successful St. Pete businessman Brian Longstreth is the one person who deserves the most credit for St. Pete Pride’s founding and success. PET HEALTH
Protect Your Pets From Summer Sun It’s officially summertime! That means swimming pools, the beach, and…heat. We all know that the heat and humidity this time of year can get down right oppressive. AC will be cranking in our homes and businesses to give us some relief. But, how do our pets handle the heat? Breeds that have genetic airway issues such as English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Boxers and the like are more prone to heat exhaustion and stroke. Canines use their breathing as a heat exchange to regulate their body temperature by breathing out the hot air from their lungs and breathing in the cooler air. This process becomes inefficient the higher the humidity and temperature are.
When you add in the restricted airways of these breeds, the process becomes highly inefficient. It is best to walk them early morning or late evening and not to exercise these breeds during the hottest parts of the day. This same rule applies to breeds with heavy coats. They will be insulated and protected for longer, but once their internal body temperature starts to rise it can be a rapid process. During these hot months we get a lot of sun and UV radiation. This increase in exposure will cause the temperature of the pavement to increase to the point where you could fry an egg on it. Our dogs’ paws are also subject to this punishing heat, which can cause blistering and sloughing of the hard protective keratinized layers. This will lead to pain and sometimes infection. Be especially careful not to walk your dog on dark asphalt or tar surfaces. Some dogs are more prone to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Symptoms are a progression through heavy panting, wobbly gait, inability to walk or stand, tongue and
By Dr. Johnathan Pierce gum color change to purple or blue, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, unconsciousness, and possible death if not treated soon enough. Just spending too much time outside in these hot humid days or in direct sun can cause this. Please be careful with your pets and be conscious of the temperature. If your pet experiences any of the issues above please contact your veterinarian or local veterinary emergency hospital immediately.

Ukrainian soldiers discovered a trove of ancient Greek urns in Odessa while preparing military fortifications against the Russian invasion.
The Ukrainian 126th Territorial Defense was digging trenches in the Black Sea port city when members unearthed a cache of 2,500-year-old amphorae, ancient ceramic vessels with narrow necks that were used for storing and transporting liquids and dry goods. Despite the ongoing warfare, the soldiers were able to transport the artifacts to the Odessa Archaeological Museum.

Meet Sandi & Amber from Roots & Ritual
Sandi and Amber had been running area nightclubs for decades! Their challenging lifestyle eventually became overwhelming, so they looked for alternatives. They were always doing their best to live healthy lives “in tune” with what mother nature has given us. They began backyard beekeeping at their home in Tampa 14 years ago over concern with the massive loss of bees on the planet, rescuing and re-homing bees all over the West Coast of Florida. In 2019, Amber became a Yoga instructor and Sandi a certified Ayurvedic practitioner. Their focus became to help people with modern life ailments regain and retain good health. Their goal is to help build equilibrium and harmony in your body and offer relief from your imbalances. After success blending teas for friends with specific needs and seeing the success, they started making and marketing basic teas that would cover a broad spectrum of ailments. They joined the Corey Market in the summer of 2000 offering products that incorporate Apitherapy, (using bee products for disease prevention or treatment) and Ayurvedic Medicine, which offers a harmonizing and synergistic effect when combined with healthful diets, herbs, aromatherapy and a healthy lifestyle. They now participate in many markets offered by Tampa Bay Markets. Meet them Sundays from 9am-1pm throughout the summer on Corey Ave. and check out Roots & Ritual on social media for their weekly schedules.

JULY 4TH By Nanette Wiser
We celebrate freedom and democracy on this All-American holiday, which this year, we realize that democracy is still a battle being waged outside America, as we stand with Ukraine. Parades, backyard cook-outs, baseball games and fireworks are the traditional favorites, but let’s add drinking beer and buying products that donate some of their sales to this courageous country, as well as supporting free speech around the world… and at home. Locally, Keel Farms is one of 24 breweries around the world to create a special batch of Resolve, including breweries from Poland, Ireland, England, and Germany. The initiative encourages brewers to use one of 42 North’s two recipes – an India Pale Kellerbier and a Kellerbier – and add their own twist. Labels featuring a sunflower, the national flower of Ukraine, are available to download and edit depending on the ingredients used. EVENTS Plans are still in flux for many communities and could change so check the city website and social media for updates. If you don’t have a boat, consider booking StarLite Cruises out of Clearwater or St. Pete Beach for a dazzling dinner and amazing view. Most fireworks start around 9pm and all events are subject to change (weather, etc.). You’ll find fireworks, food trucks and music at Largo Central Park (paid parking available). Safety Harbor Waterfront Park hosts a July 4th Celebration with children’s activities, live entertainment, food vendors, and the city parade is 2-4pm. Gulfport will have a kid’s fishing derby, a family sand sculpture contest, parade, and fireworks. This Independence Day, the city of St. Pete Beach will be launching fireworks from the east end of Corey Avenue. “Get Sirius About Your Future”
JUNE ASTROLOGY Mercury moves forward on the 3rd in Taurus; then returns to Gemini on the 13th and completes the shadow phase on the 18th. We will finally be clear of the Retro energy then and able to move quickly on to new projects and plans! Except for the first week of July, you will have the next two months to sign, decide, and make it happen! That one week will bring confusing and uncertain communications; it is better suited for creative work. Jupiter will visit Aries for the next 12 months except for the last two months of this year when it briefly returns to Pisces. Its influence brings expansion, opportunities, abundance, and prosperity! Both optimism and generosity are promoted as well. However, it may also bring indulgence, exaggeration, and an inclination to take chances. Jupiter in Aries desires freedom and takes action but could also be rash and impulsive at times. The Full Strawberry Moon in Sagittarius on the 14th highlights our sense of adventure and need to explore new things. It may also bring out the truth in situations that have been going on the last couple of weeks. Travel can include working or volunteering, but also quiet time to get away to relax. The Summer Solstice occurs on the 21st as the Sun enters Cancer and a new season begins. I predict a summer of travel, fun, and learning with high creative energy whether with family, friends or on your own! Love and money planet Venus enters fickle Gemini on the 22nd when our hearts can become restless and pockets open way too often. Enjoy friendships and intellectual pursuits, find humor and live in the moment. The New Moon in Cancer on the 28th begins the next lunar cycle. This influence brings new energy to home and family areas and asks for a balance with career demands. An adventurous getaway is in order! 60

ENCOURAGING WORDS
By Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones to its destiny, which, as with all water, is to ultimately merge with the ocean. The rock is stuck where it is, relentlessly pushing against the river, resisting the natural flow of water until, over a long enough period, the rock wears down to a pebble. If you ever visit the Grand Canyon, you’ll see that this is true.
THE CHALLENGE OF CHANGE
Are you the River or the Rock?
Do you perceive change as a friend or foe? Regardless of whether we are consciously Usually, the answer depends on whether invoking a change in our lives or resisting we desire the change, or it is forced upon it, we are dealing with the same dynamic us. The practice is to remember that what universal principle, and it is an energy which we push against we give more power to. is totally impartial to our wants, needs, and From a universal desires. We can choose to “Life is a series of natural see change as an ally perspective, change is the only constant; it is and spontaneous changes. or an enemy, and it will manifesting 24/7. Whether Don’t resist them; that only respond accordingly. welcome or unwelcome, creates sorrow. Let reality we can harness the energy be reality. Let things flow We can learn how the of change and use it to our dynamic of change works naturally forward in advantage by shifting our and align with it in a manner whatever way they like.” perspective. We suffer which serves us in healthy, ~ Lao Tzu when change happens life-affirming ways or we where we don’t really want can stay stuck – pushing it to, or, conversely, doesn’t happen where against it. The downside to resisting change we really want it to occur. What if we could is that it will have its way; it will eventually reframe our understanding of the dynamic wear us out. Some say that in a contest energy of change? What if we could between a river and a rock, the river always welcome change as a gift the Universe is wins. Why? Because the river will follow giving us, trusting it happens when it is the natural call of gravity, going over, under, supposed to – even in challenge times? around or, eventually, through the rock,
The metaphor of the rock and the river is delightfully obvious: The river represents “us” when we are conscious of our oneness with the Universe and willing to trust the call of gravity, “going with the flow” of life without trying to force or manipulate it. From a spiritual perspective, gravity represents the silent call of the Beloved One wooing us to come closer – to surrender to the journey that is ours to take; this is the unfolding of who we have come here to be–and to do it with grace and ease. The rock represents the past and our attachments; it symbolizes our resistance to change and fear of the unknown. The ocean to which the river flows represents a life fulfilled in our oneness with something larger than us; it’s our merging with the Source from which we came. Surrendering to, and going with, the natural flow of the river called “change” is how we reach the fulfillment of a life worth living. The power in this metaphor is that, if we are fully awake, every day when we get out of bed, we can choose whether we will be the rock or the river. The question I leave you to ponder is, which are you today – the river or the rock? If you find you are being a rock, what might you be clinging to? Where in your life might you be resisting change or trying to force it to happen before its time? The practice is to take a deeeeeep breath, trusting and knowing that the river knows where it is going and to let go. It will amaze you how embracing change will “change” your life for the better.

“Get Sirius About Your Future”
JULY ASTROLOGY Summer is underway and the first week of July brings some extreme energies and a bit of confusion as both Mars and Mercury change signs. On the 5th, action planet Mars leaves fiery Aries and visits determined, practical Taurus the rest of this month. We have more endurance now and energy goes into earning and indulgence. The communication planet Mercury moves into sensitive, intuitive Cancer on the same day. We are sympathetic listeners and decisions may be swayed by emotions. The Full Thunder Moon in the cautious and reserved Capricorn is on the 13th. But aspects of Neptune and Pluto may reveal things hidden or secrets and undercover happenings. Capricorn, the sign of corporations and governments; reputation, and status will all be in the spotlight now. Love and money planet Venus moves on to nurturing Cancer on the 17th. We are home and family-focused, sentimental, and sensitive in love. This sign is not wasteful but will indulge emotional desires. Moving swiftly along, messenger Mercury enters dramatic Leo on the 19th and we want to make a good impression on others. Romance and creative interests are on our minds. The Sun has been in home and family-loving Cancer all month but on the 22nd will enter playful, enthusiastic Leo. This sign is optimistic, generous, and a natural leader. We are ready to be active and adventurous. This is the sign of romance and children as well as our affection for them. Our hearts are big and we want to enjoy the good life. The next lunar cycle begins on the 28th with the New Moon in Leo. As the month ends, we become more interested in self-expression and exploration. Going forward in this cycle, hobbies and personal desires are remembered. We want to travel and learn new things. 62
