Two brick cottages on 20th Avenue circa 1949 are the homes of sisters -in-law and while the one-story exteriors are similar (if you can find the second one behind all the flora, fauna and banana trees) you are in for a wonderful surprise when you see these two very different, perfectly designed interiors.

The third “Cottage on the Grille” has all the charm of its 1950’s origin including a tropical garden. In addition, the new owner has added updating to make it the perfect retreat. You will be able to rent this lovely cottage if you want.

Right on the Intracoastal Waterway this home of a bachelor with a talent for design has created a piece of art on the inside and out. Color and art are the essence of this home and you will come away knowing you have experienced something truly creative.

Colonial on the outside but completely renovated on the inside to a most functional contemporary four bedroom, four bath home for a young couple with children; 70 steps from the Gulf of Mexico. You will love seeing how a home like this was transformed.

A fully redecorated “Coastal” home with views of the Gulf of Mexico and the Intracoastal Waterway, featuring historical Washingtonian Palms surrounding the house!

Great coverage on our Volunteer Information Session! Daystar REALLY appreciates your support. Such a nice spread in the January issue is helpful in recruiting snowbirds, etc. - Kitty Rawson Community Relations Manager Daystar Life Center, Inc. Thank you so much. The Isle of Capri Civic Association appreciates all that you do. Ralph Capasso - Pres., Capri Civic Association Thanks for printing the notice of our Valentine’s Concert. I LOVE YOUR MAGAZINE. - Charlann Mason Attached is the updated USCG Auxiliary 78 Pass-a-Grille Safe Boating Program & schedule. We are grateful for the ongoing support of the Paradise News in our efforts to promote boating safety. - Zelda Troiano, FS0-PA U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 78 I discovered your magazine over the weekend and would like to be a subscriber. As a new resident of St Pete, I think this is a great publication. How shall I proceed? - Kristen Bordignon Thank you Kristen for the lovely comments and glad you like PN. May I send in an article? Your publication is the "go to" when someone wants to know what's going on! - Woodworth

Just wanted to commend you for once again bringing to light renewable energy sources with the fascinating article on shipworms. The list of viable renewables continues to grow cellulose, algae, methane from the decomposition of organic materials, etc.; and now the humble shipworm. Past PN articles on solar power and your personal experience with photovoltaic panels on your home inspired us to install panels on ours. Our utility bill has been reduced by 2/3 with a 5kw system, and while it will pay for itself in about 6 years, it will produce electricity for 25. What would happen if companies like Duke Energy had to cover the full cost of their industry’s damage to human health and the natural environment? How about if their government subsidies were taken away and regulatory constraints on renewables were removed? Could they compete in a free marketplace? My guess is no.Thanks for generating a smart conversation about energy production. - Michael L The recent "Final Word" article, by Julian Fant on Water Hyacinths caught my attention. Having lived in Louisiana for many years before moving to Florida, I have an interest in the plant if only because of the number of times it thwarted my plans to fish a particular area. The story I've always been told regarding the introduction of the Water Hyacinth is that they were given out as souvenirs at the 1884 World's Fair (aka World Cotton Centennial) in New Orleans and from there they quickly spread across the South and to the point that one creative Louisiana congressman (now that in itself is a rarity), in the early 1900's, proposed the importation of hippos from Africa to eat the offending plants. The "Hippo Bill" was narrowly defeated. Had it passed we might not be enjoying some exciting fishing and/or hunting trips and some novel cuts in the meat dept. at Publix. - John T. Barber Not Just Another War Story is currently # 850 in all books through Amazon and the Book - Author was named a "Best Selling Author" at Amazon. We still have a long way to go and book signings have and are being scheduled...fun and work!! Thought that you might like to know that the book is being accepted well and that the reviews are positive...some good 5 Star ratings. waynemacdowell.com is the website. - Wayne MacDowell

Private $200,000 First Mortgage Sought for landmark St. Pete Beach commercial building. St. Pete Beach resident George Scribano bought the commercial building between Mermaids and Gayles Diner on 75th Ave. in St. Pete Beach and dressed it up quite a bit. His tenants Island Time, a manufacturer and retailer of Adirondeck style beach furniture, and the art gallery of Gabriella Valencia are stable and like the location. George converted the upstairs into his man cave. Now he is seeking a private first mortgage for half the value of the building, $200,000, in exchange for which he will pay $1,300 per month--likely five times or more what some of our readers are earning on their CD’s these days. If you know someone who might be interested, give George a call at 727-455-3888.

From the Publishers... Ever since I started spending winters in Florida, February has been one of my favorite months. Maybe it is because I know what it can be like to have to shovel the weather. It makes a Florida winter feel like another day in Paradise. I married my Valentine and we are still together, so the mid-February celebration holds nothing but happy memories for me. I still bring Renee home a rose whenever I can. We are pleased to report business is good... not just because the height of season is upon us; no, it is more than that. This, our 21st year could easily be the very best advertising year Paradise NEWS has ever had. Perhaps our online activities are helping increase our visibility. We now have over 500 followers on Twitter, and over 5,000 emails each month are being initiated in our social media activities. (only by request) Welcome to our newest regular advertisers, Cottage Casuals on Corey, Crowder Brothers Hardware, Czyszczon Real Estate, Hubbards Marina, Owen Sweet Design, Shells Seafood, Sherwin Williams, Tanglez, Tree of Life Yoga, Woody’s Kitchens & More. Please take the time to look at their ads and see if you would like to do business with them. If you do, please let them know you read about them in Paradise NEWS. This issue we bring you all your favorite columns, plus a preview of the local municipal elections that will choose a Mayor in Treasure Island and a Commissioner for St. Pete Beach’s 2nd district. We also include a report on recent progress in businesss development and redevelopment. Discussions are underway in the hopes of settling the lawsuits that have kept progress down on our southern beaches. Hopefully we will nave good news soon about a compromise between the city and all its citizens, that all will happily accept. Also in this issue is a report about transportation available for Island Hopping. If you have a place to crash on the island, there is really no reason to drink and drive. If you think you might have had too many, you probably have. Keep these services in mind, and be sure to utilize them. It is a whole lot better choice than trying to drive under the influence. Due to changes in the way the post office processes bulk mail, we are trying distribution methods that may change whether some carrier routes get Paradise NEWS in the mail or a stack in your condo or clubhouse lobby. To be sure you never miss a print copy you are encouraged to buy a subscription. A form is supplied on page 49 of this issue for that purpose. When thinking about the approaching celebration of the “month of romance” my strongest emotion is gratitude. Even as Mercury once again goes into retrograde (see details on page 49) I feel very lucky and appreciative that I found such a special partner to spend such a large portion of my life with. I do not suspect many ladies could tolerate me 24/7, at work and at play, like we live our lives.... believe me I am forever grateful and still very much in love. Peter Roos and the partnership that brings you the Paradise NEWS

Only a handful of municipalities in Pinellas have elections this spring. Only the Mayor’s race is up for grabs in Treasure Island and the District 2 Commissioner Race in St. Pete Beach. Incumbent Treasure Island Mayor Bob Minning faces off against challenger Mel Lanahan, a Treasure Island Realtor. She recently sent a newsletter to all TI residents warning of budget concerns as a result of what she says is poor management of the city. “I really do not think the democratic process is served when candidates for office, even local ones, get elected unopposed,” said Lanahan. Treasure Island has a history of strong popular female leadership. Mayor Mary Maloof was easily re-elected prior to Minning winning the seat. In the St. Pete Beach races, Melinda Pletcher was re-elected unopposed in Pass-a-Grille and Vina Del Mar (District 4). Only the 2nd district seat is contested with incumbent appointee Commissioner Rick Falkenstein being opposed by Joanne Lentino. Rick was appointed to the seat Jim Parent vacated midterm over the city manager’s termination. Rick’s brother Bruno had been commissioner for Pass-a-Grille and Vina for 12 years. Lentino is another resident with deep roots as a longtime St. Pete Beach family member, a retired performer and elementary school teacher with a longtime commitment to public service.

COULD GOLD BE GETTING READY TO SHINE AGAIN? The following article ran in the April 2014 issue of Paradise NEWS and indicates a clear case for “diversifying effectively” in gold and shares of gold mining stocks. Gold has risen 10% and shares have returned 20-30%, handily outperforming a“record” stock market run.- Editor For more than 10 years, GOLD defied reality and outperformed the major stock indexes consistently. Then, in 2011, its meteoric run seemed to top and collapse. While gold’s technical indicators have been demoralizing, its fundamentals couldn’t seem more encouraging. Could the past hold the “key” for gold’s future? If one looks back into economic history, he/she would find that gold’s peaks and valleys have in fact simply been a counter-cyclical movement to the ebb and flow of the dominant currency and paper assets of a particular era. While times were good, i.e. no depressions or destabilizing wars, economies and the societies that they underpinned thrived and the value of gold “waned”— until inflation returned. Similarly, the past six-plus decades have seen the world at relative peace. Communism failed and has embraced capitalism. The absolute supremacy of the American Dollar over all forms of money including gold, which ultimately becomes money in times of crisis, has been the integral part of American dominance in the world -politically, economically and culturally. As a result, this era of “Belle Epoque” has produced a system that has led to innovations the world has never seen before. Medically, scientifically and astronomically we have excelled, not just by our technology but by the ability of our financial system to recreate itself over-and-over again without creating deadly inflation. Well, the gold pundits must be right then—that is, you don’t need gold if there is no inflation—WRONG! Traditionally, most of the time when gold shines it is due to inflationary pressures. Gold and Gold shares are held as a hedge. But, in sharp contrast to such times is when gold replaces paper money as a “medium of exchange” and becomes

an absolute “store of value.” This is when Deflationary forces (not inflationary) rule the day. Demand seemingly dries up overnight for most everything. Unemployment rises and the integrity of underlying currencies plunges, along with confidence in the system. A deflationary spiral develops and engulfs everything into an economic abyss that is all but impossible to escape. Current market conditions indicate that enormous GLOBAL deflationary pressures have been increasing. Stock markets around the world have been on a parabolic run and are now beginning to roll over. Commodities have been falling and gold, silver and their mining stocks have severely underperformed all sectors for the past couple of years. Paper currencies have sold off against one another and the continued immunity in the U.S. dollar is questionable at best. Follow—The U.S. is a nation with a massive trade imbalance and a growing federal debt. We currently have very low interest rates but are the most indebted country in the world. If one was to look closer, one could see that the dollar has been consistently devalued over the years. There is no doubt of this as we see it in the prices that we pay for food , fuel, utilities and insurance, etc. With more federal borrowing and money printing, the dollar will continue to devalue over time and contribute to global deflationary pressures as the United States cannot remain the buyer of first, last and always resort. Gold, being priced in dollars, will rise in both nominal and real terms since all currencies are being devalued simultaneously, then all currencies are really simply being devalued against gold, which remember becomes the ultimate form of money in times of crisis. Gold and shares in Gold mining companies may offer an “anchor” in a stormy global sea of finance at this time. Investors should

be aware of the inherent extreme volatility pertaining to investing in the gold sector. Only 5-10% of one’s financial net worth is generally recommended with an investment horizon of at least three to five years. History reflects that in 1929 (the last great deflationary economic period), if one placed 5-10% of their portfolio in gold and gold shares, your portfolio was made whole by 1936--just seven years after the crash. If you didn’t, you waited until 1954 just to get your principal back, and you did it without taking dividends. Could history be clamorously crying out to individual investors to DIVERSIFY EFFECTIVELY NOW into gold and gold shares? The underlying fundamentals of our problems here in the U.S., whatever one wants to make of them, have persisted for far too long for investors to be lackadaisical or Pollyannish. The prevailing political and economic perspectives clearly suggest that MORE OF THE SAME money printing and debt creation is coming! Investing in gold and other commodities may not be suitable for everyone. Investing involves risks, including possible loss of principal. Investors in precious metals such as gold and silver should expect price volatility during certain market periods, both positive and negative. Investors should have adequate cash reserves and disposable income before entering these types of investments. Please consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses carefully before investing. ________________________________ CHRISTOPHER LICATA is a Registered Representative offering securities through IFS Securities, Atlanta, GA, Member of FINRA/SIPC. REAL ESTATE JIM BEGGINS - The Property Wizard

Broker - CENTURY 21 Beggins Enterprises

WHAT Would Make Our Beaches Better?… OPINION Let’s redevelop, renovate or modify homes, apartments and motels to attract more high-value tourists. Cities should enforce rules against illegal short term rentals and promote legal rentals. This will provide a better experience for visitors to our beach communities as well as their neighbors. If our cities encourage short term rentals they must enforce ordinances to assure that guests comply. Allow guests to bring pets if they desire. Pet owners pay more, generally keep their rental neater and return more often. Patronize and promote and frequent local businesses to give them incentives to upgrade and expand. Strive to give each of our 16 beach communities a specific branded theme. For example, brand Madeira Beach with a quaint fishing village theme. Make St. Pete Beach a model three (3) and and four( 4)-star tourist area. Redington Beach can be a high end, exclusive residential beach community. Encourage property owners to promote each brand or theme in the marketing of their properties.

If you own a property that is built below the flood plain, find out your flood insurance liability when the new rates are effective. Our government says it’ll be three or four years but it could be sooner. I just heard that some rates will increase 37% as of April 1st. I don’t think that’s an April fool joke. Call your insurance company before spending a lot of money on improvements. You’ll need a recent elevation survey--costing around $200-- from a licensed surveyor prior to getting a quote. We’re experiencing a migration of beach property owners to downtown St. Petersburg. This is partially because our beach cities have failed to develop their core areas. Our beach town managers who step up and improve their core areas will attract better, more prosperous growth. This will increase property values, retain values, and attract higher caliber investors, residents and visitors. Since the normal reaction of many barrier island property owners to growth and change is “not in my backyard,” our city managements have had a tough time getting new projects approved. Since people like to

“live where they vacation,” high-end developments increase all property values. As a real estate broker, former developer and owner of homes and businesses on our barrier islands for 15 years, I am keenly interested in improving our quality of life with controlled growth. This will benefit all of us. In my opinion, there is no better overall value in our country than Florida Beach real estate. Let’s work together to make it the best it can be….NOW. GET REAL ABOUT PROPERTY Travels Through Real Estate Law

BY THOMAS A. BRODERSEN, ESQ.

Please, Please, PLEASE

Don’t Write that Deed Yourself! Generally speaking, people have something very specific in mind when they sit down to execute a deed on their property. Call it their “reallife purpose,”if you will. To eliminate the need for probate when Mom or Dadpasses, for example. We have several probate cases right now where the deed wasn’t correctly drafted. Months are wasted in probate (and family fights break out), even though that’s the last thing Mom or Dad wanted. Perhaps it was to make sure that their “problem”brother (or sister) didn’t wind up with his oe her name on the title...You know, the one whose whole role in the family in recent decades was to create chaos, and make everyone’s life miserable. Guess what? His name IS on the title despite the deed, which didn’t get executed quite right, so it failed. Now you have to get his signature to do anything. Enjoy! Many people are very thoughtful, and want to make their affairs simple for when their time is past. The problem is, they didn’t understand the impact of the Homestead laws on their holdings. Homestead, you should know, is sometimes

called a “legal chameleon” by lawyers, because it means different things in different situations. It turns the color of whatever leaf it’s squatting on, just like the lizard. You could call it a Tasmanian Devil, for the chaos it sometimes lets loose. And it might be over such a simple thing as failing to state one’s marital status on a deed. Who would think you would end up spending weeks searching in vain for documents showing your ancestor was divorced (long ago, and in another state) from old so-and-so! People take these chances to save a couple of hundred dollars, and avoid having to talk to a real estate lawyer. You’d think we were gargoyles, too ugly to be in a room with! Most of us really aren’t quite that bad… Real estate law in Florida is complicated, and even non-real estate lawyers sometimes don’t get it right. Do yourself a favor. Talk to a real estate lawyer. Let him or her draft that deed. At the same time they’ll make certain that it’s correctly executed, witnessed and notarized, and doesn’t trigger ramifications that you never even thought of!

“If you’re too busy to go fishing, You’re just too busy!”

-Salty Sol Fleishman Inshore- The black drum have been thick by Johns Pass Bridge. Mike Searcy and his buddies caught a dozen or more black drum fishing with live shrimp from the beach behind Hubbard’s Marina. Will McClure and our crew have been getting the large black drum using large dead crabs and letting them rot a bit in the sun. It doesn’t hurt especially when the water is dirty. The flounder have been active around Johns Pass and many anglers reported catching nice flounder on whitebait and shrimp. They feed primarily on the sandy bottom drop-offs around structures or along the edges of grass flats. Shane Murphy, from Pinellas Park, and his buddies have been fishing the north jetty of Johns Pass a lot recently. They reported the whiting and flounder bite was on using live greenbacks they were castnetting easily around the structure of the bridge. Don’s Dock reported sheepshead being the number one catch on their dock while fishing with bits of live shrimp. Near shore- The hogfish have been thick recently, tearing up our live shrimp. The biggest tricks to catching them with hook and line is to use light fluorocarbon leader with either a light knocker rig or a light bare jig head with the live shrimp on its hook. Captain Wilson Hubbard also used to add a small square of sponge to his long shank hook soaked in squid, adding some smell to his live shrimp hogfish rig. This also acted as a second bait when the live shrimp were picked clean. The red grouper bite has been tough recently with the sporadic barometer but luckily

it’s looking like it’s going to recover nicely soon. Spring is around the corner and the next full moon should bring in a handful of mackerel. Once they get here in force, the next full moon the big smoker kings will arrive! Offshore- Our recent 39-hour at Hubbard’s Marina was another great success. Those monster mangroves have been plentiful out there for us as of late. The big mangrove snapper landed on our recent trip the scales at 8.1 lbs! We had plenty of amberjack biting but had issues locating the biggest ones. Also, many of the jacks we hooked ended up getting swallowed whole by monster goliath grouper. We had some 40-50lb fish taken whole! The blackfin tuna were biting again for us and should continue throughout February and tapering off as the water warms. The grouper bite was finicky offshore just like our near shore waters. Looking forward to this unstable barometer coming to an end! By Dylan and Captain Mark Hubbard

When you look closely, however, you can see signs of progress and hope for the future. In the past 18 months alone, a first class boutique hotel, The Zamora, has opened on the east side of Gulf Boulevard at 37th Avenue in St. Pete Beach. With it came The Castile, a nice addition to the local eatery scene. The TradeWinds Resorts finished the rebranding of the old Sandpiper into the new Guy Harvey Outpost with the RumFish Grille and Guy Harvey gift shop. The company recently acquired the Coral Reef Hotel & Timeshare site just north of its TW Island Grand property, initially for parking and later for redevelopment. A new 90-room Courtyard by Marriott opens February 17 behind the new Publix Supermarket in Madeira Beach, with a Bistro Café, pool and outdoor spa, and small group meeting space. Renovation crews have been busy at the Bayview Plaza and Bay Palms Waterfront Resorts in St. Pete Beach and just started work at the Plaza Beach Resort for completion late March or early April, according to General Manager Robert Czyszczon (pronounced Say-Zon). A redevelopment plan for a new hotel is on hold until all legal challenges to the City’s new comprehensive plan are resolved, triggering the family to renovate its existing structures. In Treasure Island, it appears one of the lots on the west side of Gulf Boulevard may soon break ground for a new hotel, five stories above parking. In both communities, owners of some of the small motels are

investing and upgrading their facilities. Also in Treasure Island, the Beach House Hotel, formerly The Cabanas, at 12035 Gulf Boulevard, is an example of what can be done on a budget to totally transform a tired older property. The Sirata Resort opened a completely renovated Compass Grille with a spectacular new menu. St. Pete Beach also has had some recent successes in the commercial arena with the beautiful expansion of Casa Del Pane, the new Sherwin Williams, recently opened Crowder Brothers Hardware, and the soon to open Verducci Italian Market. There’s also a Dunkin Donuts and Bressler’s Ice Cream in the works.

TradeWinds Resorts ‘Rebranding’ “Our conversion of the former TradeWinds Sandpiper Suites into the new Guy Harvey Outpost was prompted by the need to revitalize an older property to compete with our TradeWinds Island Grand and other area properties,” Group President & COO Keith Overton tells Paradise NEWS. “It was done in three phases starting in late 2011: First, to change the imagery and décor of all rooms for a tropical Guy Harvey imprint. Next were beachfront improvements including a new Sandbox beach lounge with private VIP Cabanas, open firepit tables, and new furniture. Finally came the build-out of former conference space into the new RumFish Grille with an outdoor deck and the largest

Guy Harvey merchandise store anwhere.” Group CEO Tim Bogott adds,“The rebranding of the property has been well received, with average daily rates up immensely and overall occupancy up slightly since the new GHO opening in September 2012. ‘As a partner, Guy Harvey himself has been very supportive, bringing his environmental and ocean conservation events to the hotel and our local area. His Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Symposium was held twice and he’s the chair of our annual fishing tournament. He comes frequently for Florida lottery winner giveaways of local tournament participation, and joint promotions with his partner Bealls stores. His retail store has done very well and RumFish business has far exceeded expectations.” RumFish opened last May, coinciding with Animal Planet’s show “Tanked,” featuring the three massive fish tanks the company installed. The main dining room tank is 11,000 square feet, with 33,500 gallons of water, the largest ever built by the team. Overton notes, ‘Having Guy here to fish with us for most of the tank specimens was a great experience. He also inspired our September 6-7 Lionfish Spearfishing Tournament, Weigh-In & Family Fun Day.” Commenting on the acquisition of the Coral Reef property from the Fleeting Family and other interests, Bogott says,“We needed parking for our employees and didn’t want to lose the strategic site next to our Island Grand. Initially we plan to demolish everything except the two successful Timeshare buildings for parking. We’re as frustrated as everybody else on the legal delays to the City’s comprehensive plan but when there’s clarity we have major redevelopment plans.”

a bygone era. Inspired by the architecture of its namesake Spanish province, the hotel’s striking Romanesque façade is the framework for 50 expansive luxury suites including 22 with two bedrooms, balconies overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway and Gulf of Mexico, stylish dining and the laid-back leisure of Florida’s fashionable Tampa Bay. “Our grand opening was a June 13, 2014, Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber ribbon cutting after many construction delays,” General Manager Tom Anderson tells Paradise NEWS.“The Castile opened a week earlier with our joint hotel-restaurant pre-opening promotion mainly focused on the big summer Florida drive market. Diamond PR in Miami did a great job, with Florida residents reached mainly by blast emails through our website and social media including Facebook, Twitter, 4Square & Yelp, among others. “One other big change since opening is that we’re now managed by Marcus Hotels in Milwaukee, a group of more than 20 properties. We’re the first in Florida in their program to expand the portfolio in the South. We get the extra advantage of corporate marketing and their reservation process. It’s been extremely helpful in getting the word out on both the hotel and restaurant. It also lets us partner with other Marcus hotels in upcoming trade shows with Visit St Pete/Clearwater, among other events. “One of the big things was partnering with BitPay, the Bitcoin processor, as one of the host hotels for the December 27 Bitcoin Bowl at Tropicana Field. ESPN did a rooftop event and we hosted most of their game staff. We’re also one of the few area hotels accepting Bitcoins – I even have a Bitcoin ‘wallet’ on my phone. Coming up is a really cool ‘month of romance’ promotion during February. “The Castile, with a staff headed by Executive Chef Ted Dorsey, serves contemporary cuisine influenced by the culinary traditions of Spain, Mexico and the Mediterranean. It’s gotten excellent reviews and was recently named Number 6 on the Tampa Bay Times Top 50 List of area restaurants “Our 360 Rooftop, offering a front row seat with 360degree views for a spectacular sunset, is currently closed as

we complete the final stages of construction. We’ve submitted final drawings to City Inspector Bruce Cooper on the required awning structure, with a goal of midFebruary completion. Meanwhile, a section of the rooftop is still available for private receptions and catering events. “We have found membership in the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber very rewarding and look forward to hosting a February 11 Mixer on the 360 Rooftop Lounge.”

Madeira Beach Courtyard by Marriott Opening February 17, the $10 million, 90-room Courtyard by Marriott Hotel of Madeira Beach, the city’s first new hotel in decades, became official when the City Commission gave its final approval in October 2012 to rezone the 1.5-acre site on American Legion Drive and to a special development agreement. This allowed the city to approve a site plan that did not conform exactly to city building and zoning codes. The plan was approved both by the city’s Planning Commission and a unanimous City Commission. The hotel includes a resort-style swimming pool, Jacuzzi and outdoor spa, a restaurant and bar primarily for guests, and four large boat slips that will allow area boaters and water taxis to dock at the hotel. A 1,400-squarefoot meeting room can be used for conferences and seminars, both by hotel guests, community and business groups.“The hotel will bring a tremendous amount of tourism to the city,” said Bob Lyons, a member of the ownership group, Santa Madeira Investment Partners. Highlights include a new lobby experience offering engaging technology coupled with inviting flexible spaces to work and relax, free high-speed Internet, and a fitness center. Every guestroom offers an Intracoastal water view, including 46 with private balconies. Jessica Respondek, Director of Sales, tells Paradise NEWS, “Our 1,400 square feet of meeting event space can handle up to 100 theater-style, 50 in a classroom set-up, and 75 banquet style. We’re doing very well with bookings

through new community partnerships and reaching out to the North and Midwest for national sales meetings. “Our overall promotion plan launched in mid-January included an email blast to individuals and outlets, building up anticipation and releasing details on the property. Now that the official opening is set, working with Marriott corporate we sent a national press release, using various electronic means, across the digital marketplace. We have our own Facebook page and the Marriott.com/TPAMB website. “We’re active members of the Tampa Bay Beaches, Madeira Beach/Treasure Island, St Pete Area and Clearwater Regional Chambers of Commerce. We’ve already reached out with a postcard mailing to all respective memberships. Another important part of our marketing is being one of the Allegiant Airlines partner hotels as the newest member to the collection. Allegiant will bundle our hotel with airfare from all their markets to St. Pete/Clearwater International Airport.” These are just a few examples of the vibrant new and redeveloped hotel and restaurant scene on the lower Gulf Beaches. Stay tuned via Paradise NEWS for many anticipated future developments. Volunteers Needed To Adopt a Monotube Help Tampa Bay Watch keep discarded monofilament fishing line out of Tampa Bay! Discarded fishing line can be very dangerous to birds, marine life, and even boats - it is estimated the fishing line will last 400-600 years in the environment before it begins to break down. You can help by adopting a monofilament recycling tube, aka monotube, at one of these popular fishing locations listed below. Once collected, fishing line is sent to Berkley Fishing, where it is recycled into tackle boxes or other fishing equipment, as well as fish habitats! Island Hopping Check Out the Various Modes of Transportation Available for Exploring the South Pinellas Beaches and the Tampa Bay Area

by Sarah Meitz hen it comes to getting from point A to point B on the beaches, many visitors, and locals, too, think that their only choices are either walking or driving their own car. However, this is not the case… there are numerous options for getting around the South Pinellas Beaches, and even into Downtown St. Petersburg and Tampa, in style, comfort, and at an affordable rate! One of the easiest, cheapest, and most enjoyable ways to get around “island style” is aboard the PSTA Suncoast Beach Trolley. For just $2 per ride, you can explore all the neighborhoods of the South Pinellas Beaches, and do and see everything you want from Pass-A-Grille all the way up to Downtown Clearwater! Check out the shops on Corey Avenue, enjoy the sights and dining at Johns Pass Village, or just take in the beautiful scenery or sunset. The Suncoast Beach Trolley runs every 20 to 30 minutes from 5:05am to 10:10pm, Monday through Thursday and Sunday, including holidays, with service until midnight on Friday and Saturday. Trolley riders should look for special PSTA trolley bus stop signs located frequently along Gulf Boulevard and connector routes that run between the coast and Downtown St. Petersburg. Exact fare is required and the trolley perators do not make change, so be sure to have adequate cash on you before hopping aboard! If you know you’ll be using the trolley all day, you can make things even easier for yourself and just purchase an Unlimited Daily GO Card, which are available onboard the trolley for just $4.50! Whether you’re wanting to “beach hop,” check out the shops, grab a bite to eat, or just get back to your hotel or a specific destination, the PSTA Suncoast Beach Trolley is the prefect laid back and affordable mode of transportation to get where you want to go with ease and enjoyment. Make sure to visit www.psta.net for the trolley schedule, routes, and additional information. If traveling via trolley isn’t quite your style, then maybe go a different route and use a private taxi to get from place to place! BATS Taxi Service, located at 5201 Gulf Boulevard on St. Pete Beach, services all of Southern

Pinellas County, Tampa, Clearwater and many other destinations 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and on ALL holidays! They’ll get you where you need to go quickly, easily and in comfort, by private taxi, van, or luxury town car. Whether you need a pick-up or drop-off at the airport, a ride to restaurants and shops, or getting back home from a night out on the town, BATS Taxi Service will be sure to transport you to your destination comfortably and safely. All BATS drivers are background-checked and hold valid, up-to-date taxi licenses from the City of St. Petersburg. They want to make sure you get where you need to be in a timely fashion, so when calling BATS for a ride, be sure to give them a 20-minute lead time for taxi pickup, and 24-hour notice for town car reservations. And if you’re interested in figuring out what it will cost you to get to your preferred destination, give them a call at 727-367-3702, or go to their website, www.batstaxi.com, to calculate your trip cost and browse their value flat rates! So, next time you’re in need of a cab ride to the beaches, downtown St. Pete, the airport, local attractions, or even Tampa, Clearwater, and beyond, give BATS a call and they’ll take you from point A to B in one of their comfortable taxis or professionally chauffeured luxury town cars. A couple of alternatives to the beach trolley and taxi services for getting around the beaches are the Free Island Hopper and Free Beach Ride! gmont Key is getting a muchneeded beach renourishment.

In a win-win situation, channel dredging is allowing ships to travel freely to local ports in Tampa and Manatee County as well as adding sand to the Northwest shore of Egmont Key. The new, wider beach is expected to be completed in early March. The shipping channel is dredged every seven years on a maintainance program. The sand would typically be dumped in the Gulf. The Army Corps of Engineers thought the sand would be of better use restoring Egmont Key. By the end of the project, they will have moved 600,000 cubic yards of sand from the shipping channel to the shores of Egmont Key. On a recent trip to pull down Egmont Key Lighthouse’s holiday decorations, Egmont Key Alliance volunteers got to see the striking changes being made to their beloved historic landmark. They were amazed at the contrast between the “old” beach, a skinny stretch of white sand, and the “new” expansive beach. Volunteers recognized that the huge job currently in the works would bring Egmont Key to the forefront of heavenly places in Florida to lay a blanket and soak up some rays. Even if you’ve ventured on or near Egmont Key, you may not have noticed that there is at least a day’s worth of activities on the island. Egmont Key was once home to 70 buildings including everything from a barbershop to a jail. Enough ruins remain to give a visitor a glimpse of what life was like on Egmont

Key back at the turn of the 19th Century when the island served as an Army facility- Fort Dade (1898-1916). Finely laid brick roads navigate the remaining structures, to take visitors on a magical journey into the past. Volunteers and visitors frequent the island for many reasons. Some take the trip for the island’s natural landscape including sea grapes, osprey nests and wandering gopher turtles. Others visit for the island’s rich history. Members from the Seminole Indian tribe as well as Confederate and Union soldiers have left their footprints on the island’s white sandy beaches. “For me, it’s great escapism,” says volunteer Doug Bradley of Clearwater. Bradley has been visiting the pristine beauty on Egmont Key for roughly 20 years. Still, there are some who are simply lighthouse groupies. Bradley remarks, “I get a chuckle out of the people who want their collection books stamped. They travel to all the lighthouses. They’re crazy for lighthouses.” Volunteers have been sprucing up the island for years, planting fir trees, painting and tending to whatever chores need to be done. Chris Cargo, a volunteer from St. Petersburg, looks forward to adding plantings when the “new” beach is finished. An unfortunate remodel 30 years ago left this Florida landmark one of the least picturesque lighthouses in our state. Egmont Key Alliance President Richard Sanchez guesses they would need about $1.5M* to restore the gallant looks of the original Egmont Key lighthouse.

Volunteers such as Doug Bradley would like these restorations to include a foghorn for visitors to see (and hear), adding to the historical character of the Egmont Key experience. Sanchez, however, maintains that the Alliance’s primary focus is for the lighthouse and its island to be, “Restored. Preserved. Protected.” He says,”The cost of the lighthouse restoration was determined by a survey done a number of years ago by Ken Smith Architects. They studied all the lighthouses in Florida at the request of the State and the total cost to restore them was $20 million. Egmont’s share was about $1.5 million. When the restoration is done it would require re-casting all of the iron parts that were removed and replacing the bricks of the watch room. Alex Klahm, a lighthouse restorer that lives in St.Petersburg, has visited Egmont and said it would not be a difficult restoration. Alex has worked on about 30 lighthouses around the country and worked with Ken Smith to restore the Anclote Key Lighthouse.” If you want to further explore the history of Egmont Key, you can pick up a copy of “Egmont Key: A History” by local Egmont Key Alliance volunteers Don and Carol Thompson. To find out how you can get involved with the Egmont Key Alliance visit their website at www.egmontkey.info/ or email info@egmontkey.info. Information received from Janis Froelich. t. Petersburg’s world famous Pier has always been a landmark for the city and a gathering place for its citizens. Over the years, several piers have graced St. Petersburg’s beautiful waterfront, including the instantly recognized inverted pyramid that opened its doors in 1973. As the city’s structure reaches the end of its useful life, the city eagerly awaits its eighth pier as a selection process unfolds. The concepts incorporate a variety of features, such as a waterfall, lagoons, and terraces. Of the eight submissions, six utilize the current inverted pyramid structure, while the others propose an entirely new shape for the city’s landmark. Concepts will undergo a technical review to reveal any issues with cost, construction or permitting. The public will then be invited to

see the designs, hear from the design teams, and take a non-binding public survey, results of which will go to the Pier Selection Committee. The committee will then make it’s recommendation to the Mayor and City Council in March. It’s expected that a contract will be complete by late May, with groundbreaking in the fall of 2015. Images of the designs, brief descriptions and additional background information are available by going to www.newstpetepier.com and downloading the images and information. About the Pier Selection Process: Next steps include a technical review that may eliminate any concepts that have unrealistic cost estimates and/or any insurmountable permitting or construction issues.

A public survey will take place in late February/early March, followed by a ranking by the Selection Committee, which will then make their recommendation to the Mayor and City Council. January 23 - February 23 - Public information/outreach February 11 & 12 - Public presentations by finalists (Coliseum) February 23 - March 6 - Public survey period (online) Early to mid-March - Survey outcome March 20 - Final selection and ranking by Selection Committee April 2 - City Council approval of ranking by Selection Committee Mid to late May - Final contract approved CONTACT: For technical information about the designs, contact: Raul Quintana 727-893-7913 or Raul.quintana@stpete.org

February 2015 February welcomes us with a Full Snow Moon in fiery, generous, dramatic Leo on the 3rd that accents our creative, fun and romantic interests! It also makes a nice aspect to Jupiter; which promotes understanding and easy resolve to matters being highlighted for the last two weeks. As our lunar month winds down, Mercury will station direct on the 11th but won’t be up to his regular speedy self until March 3rd. Until then, our daily routines, communication and projects will still move on the slow side. Hopefully, our technology devices will start working again or be easily replaced without too many delays or setbacks. The New Moon occurs in independent, inventive, humanitarian Aquarius on 18th, starting a cycle more about needs of others, friends and future concerns. Then the Sun enters Pisces only minutes later the same day; making its way to join mystical Neptune over the next week, and asking Saturn to take it easy on us. Boundaries may soften or confusion can set in; so stay alert and see where it takes you. Energy planet Mars and lovely Venus have been in dreamy, intuitive Pisces all month and we strolled along with rose-colored glasses on. But as the new moon cycle begins, Mars moves into assertive, impatient Aries on the 19th with Venus joining him on the 20th. We want life and love to move along now in an adventurous fashion!

SUBSCRIPTION

AQUARIUS: Spotlight falls on partners; personal and business. Financial matters are on your mind both gaining & spending. New focus asks for an end to personal pitfalls. Communication becomes important; resolves. Short trips are likely; drive defensively.

PISCES: Health and workplace concerns are the focus. Take charge and ask for what you want; Venus gives you favor! Later on, income and values have your attention. Let go of anything no longer serving your best interest. Take quiet time; relax, meditate. ARIES: You have your mind on fun and romance; enjoying social time. Also, you get a lot done behind the scenes. Take a mental health break. The new moon, Venus and Mars all begin a major energy cycle for you. Leave behind people and ideas that are outdated. TAURUS: Home and family matters take the spotlight; with easy solutions available. Groups or organizations can be of great assistance; with new options. Take time to make a wellness plan. Relax and take a mental holiday. Enjoy more quality time with friends. GEMINI: Conversations bring things to light with easy resolve. Legal matters are set back; reviewed. Educate yourself. New energy focuses on your position in career or society. Put energy into future plans. You presence is in demand for social occasions. CANCER: Full moon shines onto income and spending. Finances get reviewed and adjustments to resources are likely. Enjoy a trip or just learn about something new. Career and position get a new energy cycle with you being favored for advancement. LEO: The full moon spotlight puts you on center stage! You review relationships and are received well by others. Make adjustments for a healthier lifestyle.

Financial gain is likely. Endings occur in many areas as you let go of old patterns. Later, travel and learn. VIRGO: A guardian angel protects you and shows you what lies beneath the surface. It is a great time to return to a healthier lifestyle. Revisions at work take place. Partners are congenial and understanding. Your new lunar cycle assists in letting go of old habits. LIBRA: Spotlight falls on friends and social connections that result in benefits for all. Workplace brings benefits. Health concerns can be modified; info brings answers. Relax with a fun hobby. New focus is on romance and partnerships; pleasant, unpredictable. SCORPIO: Career takes center stage with better opportunities. You’re enjoying fun times and romantic encounters. Home may need repairs and family time to reconnect. A new twist on traditional ways begins. The workplace is pleasant and lively. Old habits end. SAGITTARIUS: Long distance travel is the highlight; you learn along the way. Enjoy the experience; let go of plans. Reconnect with others and catch up on important issues. Family life has been a pleasant hub of activity; but later recreation and romance reign. CAPRICORN: Financial matters have your attention. Review finances and resources. Pleasant conversations and short trips occur often. Everyday routines, home and family situations are stimulated with the new lunar cycle as it brings many needed changes.

F IN AL Word by Julian Fant The warm weather that area residents and visitors have enjoyed for the past few months, including Christmas Day, brings back memories of the weather our newlyarrived family experienced in 1961. As the newly-hired manager of the Treasure Island Chamber of Commerce, we were surprised to see so few outdoor lights and decorations along our main thoroughfares. The Chamber approved expending a modest purchase of outdoor lights, and it became the only instance in which I received a sunburn prior to Christmas Day......the temperature reached the 80-degree mark! As a stunning contrast, however, the following year was much different. The temperature on Treasure Island in

February was recorded at about 20 degrees, with strong winds from the Northwest creating a chill factor that was much lower. Ornamental plants froze to the ground, and a dense stand of Australian pine trees that flanked both sides of the Causeway were killed, as were those along Pass-A-Grille Beach. Beach cities were forced to adjust their budgets in order to cut and haul away the debris, but nature soon brought forth green foliage and bright color from the dormant roots, and we have not had a repeat of “the Big Chill” since. Fortunately, although this winter has been the coldest in years, the Sunshine State was a noticeable exception. Let’s hope that February will not be a repeat of that 1962 Arctic blast!

WEATHERSTRIPPING WOES H .C .L A/C… OWLING WINDS OLD DRAFTS OSING C AN ANYTHING REALLY BE DONE ABOUT IT ?

Let’s first examine first why sliding glass doors lose their efficiency. Weatherstripping ages & flattens - just like an old toothbrush. When the bristles in the weatherstripping flatten out the two pieces will not provide a quality seal against drafts and water. Doors get crooked. Even the best of doors are only as straight as their door rollers will allow them to be. The first thing that typically breaks on sliding glass door rollers is adjustability. There are special gears, called worm gears, in the wheels that allow them to be adjusted up and down. When those no longer function, doors will be crooked and the weatherstripping, old or new, will NOT align, allowing for howling winds and drafts. Sometimes you will have perfectly rolling wheels, which are not adjustable because the worm gears have broken.

Visit… www.SliderRepair.com & Click on VIDEOS for Product Specific Repair Advice.

What can be done about bad weatherstripping? Well, it’s NOT a fun task, but you can replace the weatherstripping throughout most sliding glass doors. This requires determination and lots of picking action with nimble fingers. However the results are fantastic when you get the new fluffy weatherstripping back into the door. Our clients are always amazed at the difference! We have a couple of videos on our website about weatherstripping, entitled: “Weatherstrip Woes Video” & Weatherize Video”. Click on Video Tab at www.SliderRepair.com Then give us a call and we can come weatherize your sliding glass doors!

Loose, broken, flattened, & missing weatherstripping causes costly leaks!
