Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and it is easy to adopt an attitude of gratitude. We have been blessed with the opportunity to publish “the community news magazine” of the area that vacationers are most likely to visit. It has allowed us to live here in paradise for most of our married lives. It has also provided us with meaningful long-term relationships with an incredible collaborative team of creators of the written word. We are thankful for our writers and editors, our proofreader, our art and production director, and the entire digital team that maintains our website, our social media and produces the every-Thursday digital newsletter you can subscribe to for free. You will find the most recent copy under the newsletter tab at www.paradisenewsfl.com.

EDITORIAL Nanette Wiser - Executive Editor wiser86@gmail.com Steve Traiman - Feature Editor traimancreativecopy@gmail.com ART & PRODUCTION DIRECTOR Janet Nummi

Our subscription portal is also up and running, so you can get 1-5 years’ worth coming to you or to someone you know that loves our area. A subscription makes a great holiday gift that keeps on giving all year. It is also a wonderful closing gift for newcomers to our area. We are thankful for our loyal readers and especially the advertisers that make Paradise NEWS possible.

Since Paradise NEWS published its first issue in December of 1995, November 2021 is the 260th edition and the end of our 26th year spreading good news in Pinellas County, from Gulf Beaches to St. Petersburg and downtown St. Pete. We set aggressive goals early on: to Promote the Arts; to Support The Local Business Community; to Celebrate the Wealth of Resources in the area; to give our readers plenty of value for the investment of their time; and to make each issue better than the prior. TripAdvisor users selected St. Pete Beach the “Sunset Capital of Florida” as their favorite beach destination in the U.S. for 2021. Mayor Al Johnson took the surfboard award to a meeting of “The Big C”, a group of barrier island city officials, not to gloat, but to say it belonged to all of them. St. Pete Beach just has more hotel rooms, so there were more voters there. He was in good company anyway. Madeira Beach was in the top 10 and Treasure Island close behind. While the pandemic cut deeply into revenues throughout the area, tourism has thankfully rebounded this summer with records being set at our airports, in our hotels, and our shops. Businesses, tech incubators, corporate headquarters and entrepreneurs are relocating to Pinellas County, as are residents from other states. Hats off to our Chamber leaders, mayors (especially Rick Kriseman, who leaves office in 2022), city and county leaders. Paradise NEWS’ readership area is a huge center for weddings. That industry tanked due to the pandemic, causing a backlog. The year 2022 is expected to see more people tying the knot than any year since the eighties. We’ll get our share.

What’s the attraction? In addition to the beach and sunsets, our sports teams won all the records last season. We are also becoming known as a place where you do not need a car to get around. That was a huge advantage this summer, when rental cars were in very short supply and were very pricey. Access to public transportation has been improving. St. Pete Beach is served by pollution-free electric carts called FreeBee plus Free Beach Ride. Island Hopper and the PSTA Trolley to go up the beach to Clearwater or to downtown St. Petersburg. Early next year the SunRunner Bus Rapid Transit system from St. Pete Beach to downtown will greatly expand access and egress to games, museums, and employment options. The future in Paradise looks bright. Happy Thanksgiving!

... Medicine can help with physical ailments or chemical imbalances, but cannot treat the person as a whole. At Triverde Health, medical marijuana doctors and The Centre @ SPB take this integrative approach. We strive to provide our clients / visitors an enjoyable environment in which to learn about self-managed ways of taking care of one’s health. When asked “Are You Anti Big Pharma,” I say “No, I am not opposed to Big Pharma…” Like anything, there is a time for Big Pharma solutions. On the other hand, I have yet to talk to anyone who has said, “I love all the pills I take!” With Medicinal Cannabis / Marijuana and Over-The-Counter (OTC) Cannabis along with the other services offered and recommended, you can take better control of your wellbeing with little effort. We all know going to the GYM 3 times a week is a great idea...yet many of us don’t do that.

A perfect example of our success here, is local resident Crystal Smarr, co-owner of Beach Bods Fitness in SPB. Prior to becoming a client at The Centre, she was unable to exercise without risking an asthma attack. She was hospitalized 3 times within 45 days before she became a medicinal client. Crystal has been free of asthma attacks for over three years and placed 4th in the Master’s Bikini at the Hurricane Bay Competition in mid-October. Holiday Lighted Boat Parades For people from northern climes, an iconic holiday image is that of riding a horse-drawn sleigh through a snow-covered landscape. Here in Tampa Bay, our holiday thoughts turn to lighted boat parades. These annual events feature fleets of watercraft with enough decoration and strings of multi-colored lights to make even Santa’s elves envious. And the gaudiest – er, best

decorated – win prizes! Almost every waterfront community in the area either has its own parade or joins up with neighbors, and here’s the dates and times they set sail. Clearwater – Saturday, December 11, 6pm. The Happiest Man on Earth author died at 101 in Sydney, Australia, last month. Eddie Jaku was described by an Australian Jewish community leader as “a beacon of light and hope for the world.” Born Abraham “Adi” Jakubowiez in April 1920 in the German city of Leipzig, he was tossed out of school in 1933 for being Jewish, but managed to earn a precision engineering certificate in another city under an assumed name. That certificate allowed him to work as a slave for the Germans, while his parents died in a concentration camp. In 1946 he married in Belgium and he and Flore emigrated to Australia, where he is survived by his wife of 75 years, two sons and five grandkids. His best-selling memoir, The Happiest Man on Earth, was published just last year. “Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received. Thankfulness is the natural impulse to express that feeling. The Riverwalk Lighted Boat Parade begins in the Convention Center basin, travels to the Heights, and ends at Sparkman Wharf. The Holiday Spectacular will be going on along the Riverwalk. It will feature a 35-foot-tall lighted Christmas tree floating in the harbor, and a gingerbread lighted display and a lighted toy train display floating in the river by Water Works Park. A forest of lighted pine trees will be at The Riverwalk Manor Dock. Treasure Island – Saturday, December 4, 6:20pm. Considered by many to be the largest lighted boat parade in Tampa Bay, boats will depart from The Club at

PROPERTY LAW

Travels through Property Law by Tom Brodersen, Esq.

Why We Plan assets go down like dominoes is a nightmare, but one that can be avoided.

Few of us feel like the assets we leave behind are enough to do everything we would wish for our loved ones. Looking forward, the vicissitudes of life in their future won’t be lesser, but rather greater than what we have had to cope with. So why let taxes take any bigger a bite than need be? Tax avoidance by careful planning is legal and the only sensible thing to do for our heirs. Avoiding the discomfort and uncertainty of bureaucratic delay, expense and procedure seems like an important goal, which estate planning can accomplish. There are also lifetime benefits to streamlining your wealth. Asset protection is one of them. Americans today seem more litigious than ever. Watching your

12

NOVEMBER 2021 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

Too many parents lose precious time wondering if their holdings will do little more than spark disagreement and disputes among their heirs. That is actually given as a primary motivator for much of the planning by parents of the choices they make in distributing their estates. It’s even the theme behind a currently popular television series these days. Many people are concerned with the exorbitant cost of nursing care (at home or in nursing homes) as their health deteriorates. Medicaid Planning Trusts (also known as Home Protection Trusts) can protect your assets (and your plan to benefit your heirs) from being quickly dissipated by those costs, but only if implemented far enough in advance. Of course, it is also true that, if you don’t adequately plan your estate and reflect those choices in your will or other documents, the state will substitute its judgement for your own in distributing your assets, under the rules of intestacy.

That is a crude tool, indeed, that has little of the sensitivity or insight you would bring to making those choices. Finally, as increasing age necessitates more and more involvement in the medical establishment, planning can facilitate communication and decision making in that context in very important ways. Designation of a health care surrogate can assure that someone who truly understands your wishes makes your decisions for you, when you are no longer able. FAIRGROUNDS ST. PETE Treat your friends to Fairgrounds St. Pete. You don’t “look” at Fairgrounds. You meander through a labyrinth of rooms, each designed by local artists and technologists to whisk you into different dimensions of weird and wacky Florida. A welcome relief from reality! Wandering through the Mermaid Star Motel reminded me of my family’s Miami vacation when I was six.

The neon pastels, boomerang Formica countertops and terrazzo flooring weren’t trendy mid-century modern back then, they were just decor. Mermaid Queen Iona Parris reigned supreme in her dressing room with her hand-crafted seashell crown and other baubles arrayed on her vanity. Behind her glimmered the shell-and-jewel-encrusted wall created by Fairgrounds co-founder and CEO Liz Dimmit and her mother.

My favorite? Mike Hicks’s Mysterious Portal to the Bay. You poke your head through a literal hole in the wall and suddenly you’re under a bridge looking at an unidentifiable brightly lit skyline on the far side of the water. Sounds of traffic overhead, gently rippling water below, a breeze in your hair. All of this evoked a long-ago boat ride in Shanghai. Mesmerizing! Liz Dimmit told me she dreamed of creating Fairgrounds for about 20 years. Why “Fairgrounds”? I noted that the building, a former window-film factory, is on Fairfield Ave., but Dimmitt said there’s much more. “The name Fairgrounds references traditional fairgrounds and their role as a place for exhibiting new ideas, as well as recognizing talent, creativity and innovation.” Plus, fairness is the basis of the business model. “Fairgrounds is a play on words referencing our mission to compensate artists fairly for their contributions by paying not only for their work, but also a portion of the profits from ticket sales while their work is on view.” For more information and to buy tickets see www.fairgrounds.art. "SHE GAVE ME MY LIFE BACK" Local clinic has a medical solution for peripheral neuropathy.

“It started out as a normal outing. My wife and I had to run to the grocery store. We were driving down the road casually going over our shopping list when the car ahead of me started to slow down anticipating the yellow light. I started to move my foot from the gas to the brake as any normal person would do when they see brake lights in front of them but I couldn’t. I couldn’t feel my foot. The car kept moving forward and I just couldn’t get my foot on the brake. And CRUNCH! I finally came to a stop when I hit the car in front of me.”

This story was shared with us by John S., a Tampa Bay area resident who has peripheral neuropathy. While no one was hurt in this accident, John S. had suffered almost everyday of his life with tingling and burning in his feet until numbness set it and he could no longer feel even the brake pedal beneath his foot. “Typically, the first stage is pain.” shares Dr. Rebecca Gibbons of AAIM| Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine. “You feel burning, tingling, sharp pains, or you feel like you’re walking on tacks or marbles. This pain eventually subsides and the numbness sets in. Unfortunately the numbness brings with it a whole other host of problems. We see people have to become reliant on their spouse or family, which is really difficult for both."

It is terribly common that peripheral neuropathy and its debilitating symptoms interfere with a person’s ability to live their life. John was now reliant on his wife to drive him around, What is even more common, John's general practitioner and several specialists told him there was nothing they could do other than prescribe him pills that would ease the pain of his neuropathy. That’s where Dr. Gibbons and her staff at AAIM come in. “About 75% of our current patients come to us suffering from the same condition as John,” tells Dr. Gibbons. "They’re in constant pain from neuropathy and it prevents them from not only living their lives but more importantly, it prevents them from enjoying it. Depending on the severity of their nerve damage, we typically see tremendous progress in 3-4 months of treatment. I like to say we’re in the business of making your golden years golden." "I can't lie," admits John "I was skeptical at first but I had run out of options. Nothing else was helping but after about four months into treatment, I was confidently able to drive myself to Publix and to my appointments. Dr. Gibbons gave me my life back."

You Have a Choice When It Comes to Medicare Coverage

Experience the Difference with

Ryan L. Baker, M.D.

“Medicare plans center on preventive services, which is what your relationship with your primary-care provider is all about.” If you’re 65 or turning 65, you might be missing out on important health benefits, and now’s the perfect time to evaluate your healthcare needs with your primary-care provider. Medicare’s Open Enrollment Period, also referred to as the Annual Enrollment Period, runs through December 7. This means you can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Health Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C). There are a lot of choices, and it can be confusing, but your primary-care provider knows your healthcare needs better than anyone and should be one of your first stops when it comes to discussing your healthcare needs. And one of your first questions should be whether or not your primary-care provider is included in your plan. Don’t assume that they are, and don’t wait until after you’ve enrolled to check this. Medicare plans center on preventive services, which is what your relationship with your primary-care provider is all about. Talk with your doctor about your individual healthcare needs, and don’t base your Medicare decision solely on the monthly payment. As your primary-care provider, we can let you know which plans we accept, let you know what options you should consider based on your health history, and can refer you to educational materials or enrollment forms that are conveniently located in our office common areas. There’s a lot of information out there, and we care about the health of our patients and the community, so Millennium created our Medicare Connect program to connect you to the right Medicare resources and partners. For more information on Millennium Medicare Connect, visit YourMedicareConnect.com or contact our HealthShare360 Medicare Navigators at 844-878-5012. Remember, you do have a choice when it comes to Medicare coverage. About Millennium Physician Group: Millennium Physician Group is the largest comprehensive, independent physician group in Florida with more than 550 healthcare providers at 150 locations in 19 Florida counties serving nearly half a million patients. ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS ALL CDC GUIDELINES FOLLOWED, PLUS SOCIAL DISTANCING

LIVE LIFE BETTER By Nanette Wiser Courtesy Museum of Fine Art

SPIRIT Sit, Stay, Heal is part of the Museum of Fine Art’s Picture of Health initiative. On the 4th Thursday of every month, therapy dog teams arrive in the museum gardens to facilitate stress and anxiety relief for our members, visitors, and guests. Frontline health care workers get complimentary admission; use discount code WOOF and present employee badge at front desk upon arrival. Another MFA program in this initiative is MFA Mood Tours that allow visitors to view the museum’s collection through the lens of six emotions: Joy/Celebration, Grief/Reslience, Empowerment, Calm, Self-Reflection and Relationships. MIND A podcast in the morning helps set the tone for a mindful day. The Psychology Podcast with Scott Barry Kaufman, Under the Cortex and NPR’s Hidden Brain explore how the mind works and reveals new research into how we think, behave and learn about the world. Also illuminating is CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s book Keep Sharp: Build A Better Brain at Any Age. BODY About one in five adults ages 20 to 69 has suffered permanent damage to their hearing from exposure to loud noise, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) analysis. About 53 percent of those reported no job-related noise exposure, meaning they damaged their hearing doing things at home or in the community, like using a leaf blower, sporting events, car races, woodworking projects, boating, motorcycle riding, listening to music with ear buds or headphones, exercise classes with pumped up music or going to concerts, even classical music. Loud noise destroys the tiny hair cells in your inner ear, and they don’t regenerate. Consider downloading a smartphone app to measure the sound in your environment, then carry a pair of disposable foam earplugs you can pop in anytime you’re in a noisy environment. THANKSGIVING Gratitude is the reason for the season. For a poignant holiday centerpiece, anchor a small tree branch in a vase with colorful orange and brown glass rocks. Give everyone a paper leaf and ask them to write what they are on grateful for this year. Punch a hole for string and hang from the tree. Another new tradition to add this turkey day? Thanksgiving Day is also National Family Health History Day. Give everyone a list of relatives on both sides of the family tree and ask them to write down health conditions and when they experienced the diagnosis. A CDC free online tool – My Family Health Portrait helps you organize your family history, a helpful tool for your doctors. www.phgkb.cdc.gov/FHH/html/index.html 20

Holiday

Scam Alert Story by STEVE TRAIMAN While online, email and phone scams of all kinds – taxes, romance, charity, personal assets – occur year-round, they ramp up at the holidays, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office warns. Charity scams are the highest occurrence, with many false requests for donations to so-called law officers and veterans’ groups at the top of the list. First line of defense for any “charity’ is to access www.CharityNavigator.org, that lists more than 100,000 legitimate and other charities by name. Any ranking below 3 stars of 5, or program donations of less than 60% should be suspect. The site also notes reasons for not listing vital information on any group. At tax season, the sheriff’s office reminds you that fraud continues to be a threat in Pinellas County (March 2021 advisory). The Economic Crimes Unit notes the typical scenario involves a caller who pretends to be the IRS and tells their potential victim that they owe taxes to the IRS and that an active warrant out for their arrest, unless they pay over the phone with pre-paid cards and provide the numbers to them. The PCSO offers these five tips to avoid becoming a victim of an IRS scam: Check Your Computer’s Security and thoroughly research any software or security settings to ensure that your computer or other devices are protected...

22

NOVEMBER 2021 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

Beware of Public Wi-Fi when completing your tax return. Don’t Communicate With Unknown Contacts – as an example, IRS doesn’t initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text message, telephone, or social media to request financial information ... Pay Close Attention to the Source and don’t respond to pre-recorded voicemails that are threatening or urgent, or to emails asking for personal information, open any attachments, or click on any links … and Use the Right Payment Method – if a caller asks for a credit card, gift card, pre-paid debit card, iTunes card, or wire transfer, do not give it to them but ask to get a mail request. The Dangers of Cyber Romance (Feb. 2021 Advisory) … Online dating has become one of the most popular ways for singles to find partners and according to Statista, as of 2020, more than 32 million Americans are using online dating services, and the online dating service eHarmony reported that 53% of people who use dating websites lie on their profiles. Romance fraud is a preventable crime if you know what to look for. Here’s how you can keep yourself from becoming a victim: Never send money; carefully examine people’s profiles; use reverse image search on their pictures; end the relationship if they refuse to meet you face to face; if you do meet the person, pick a public place and let a friend or family member know where you are. If a scam sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you are the victim of any type of fraudulent scam, contact the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office at 727-582-6200.

AARP Fraud Watch Network Another excellent anti-scam alert system is the AARP Fraud Watch Network, as the organization points out that research shows that knowing about a kind of scam can help you avoid it. The AARP Scam-Tracking Map shows reports in real-time, searchable by ZIP code.

With more than 50 different types of scams represented, phishing, grandparent scams and romance scams are among the most reported via the map. The Network emphasizes: Stay Informed – Knowledge gives you power over scams. The network equips you with reliable, up-to-date insights, alerts and fraud prevention resources to help you spot and avoid scams and protect your loved ones. It even covers the latest scams in the news … Find Support – If you’ve been targeted by scams or fraud, you are not alone. Trained fraud specialists provide support and guidance on what to do next and how to avoid scams in the future. The AARP Fraud Helpline, 877-908-3360, is free and available to anyone. It also offers online support sessions for further emotional support ... Have a Voice – AARP fights for consumers by advocating for laws and regulations to stop scams and shut down fraud attempts. It also provides a voice to consumer concerns and helps shape the public discussion on fraud. AARP offers these Fraud Prevention Resources: Look up a scam in AARP’s Fraud Resource Center, with dozens of tip sheets on how to recognize and avoid common scams, including videos that break down how scams work … See or report scams in your area with the Scam-Tracking Map … Get regular updates on the latest scams by signing up for biweekly Watchdog Alerts or text FWN to 50757 to receive text alerts ... Hear directly from fraud experts at one of AARP’s webinars, tele-town halls or live events in communities around the country ... Hear stories of real scams on the award-winning podcast, The Perfect Scam … Get social with the AARP Fraud Watch Network on Facebook and Twitter, where you’ll also have access to online events. You can also connect with others on the Scams & Fraud channel in AARP’s online community ... Albuquerque,

New Mexico International Balloon Fiesta From high-mountain meadows to endless rolling prairies, New Mexico’s landscapes are out of this world and beyond description. Floating high above this storied landscape of cities, villages and wide open plains in a hot air balloon is both a grand adventure and peaceful and meditative experience. With nearly a million visitors each year, Albuquerque’s International Balloon Fiesta™ may be the world’s largest and best-known ballooning event – but it is not alone, as balloons set sail across New Mexico year-round. Balloon festivals in Taos, White Sands, Gallup, Angel Fire and Elephant Butte join with Albuquerque to make hot air ballooning in New Mexico a year-round adventure. For more than three decades, enthusiasts from around the world make a pilgrimage to Albuquerque each October to celebrate ballooning at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta™. This is the largest ballooning event on earth, the most photographed event on earth, and the largest annual international event held in the United States. The New Mexico skies are painted as hundreds of balloons lift off from Albuquerque’s Balloon Fiesta Park. Nothing rivals the power of Mass Ascension on crisp early mornings as these graceful giants leave the ground to take their place in the cerulean desert sky. For ballooning fans worldwide, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta™ is a pilgrimage. There’s something for everyone to enjoy... whimsical special shapes filled with equal parts of hot air and wonder, and Balloon Glows that create a magical night landscape for spectators to wander. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta™ will leave you awestruck and wanting more.

Bonnie & Steve in balloon basket Fiesta Launch Field with more balloons prepping for takeoff

For Paradise NEWS long-time feature editor Steven Traiman and his intrepid wife Bonnie, participation in the event was a definite bucket list item they were able to check off early in October 2021. The 49th annual event had been delayed a year due to the pandemic, but was back almost in full force with 588 balloons and 866,414 guests over nine days. This was Steve and Bonnie’s sixth time in a balloon, having previously ascended in California, Arizona, Florida, and France. It was certainly one of the most unforgettable experiences. In between their visits to the Balloon Fiesta Grounds, they took the chance to visit the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, founded in 1978 and operated by the 19 Pueblo tribes in New Mexico. Unfortunately, their trip ended on a discouraging note as they were caught in the Southwest Airlines situation that canceled hundreds of flights and left over 31,000 passengers stranded in airports around the U.S. It took two extra days to get home – eventually on a direct flight from Austin, Texas, to Tampa – but they would not let it take the edge off what was one of the most memorable trips in their almost 59 years of marriage. While we did not have room in this edition of Paradise NEWS to publish Steve Traiman’s entire feature in print, it is available on our website at www.paradisenewsfl.com/balloon-fiesta for all who are interested to read in its entirety.

DINING A TASTE OF ITALY! Chef Missy Robbins and Talia Baiocchi’s stunning new cookbook Pasta is half encyclopedia and half regional Italian dishes. Here you learn how to cut, stuff, shape and cook pastas – cannelloni, cappelletti, corzetti and casarecce. Then comes the best part, regional pasta recipes from around the boot, from rigatoni al diavolo to delicious dishes beyond Bolognese. Intrigued and hungry, we decided to explore unique regional Italian pasta dishes at our fave restos from downtown St. Pete to Gulf Beaches and beyond. Our Italian cuisine maestro, USF librarian emeritus and friend Gerald Notaro also recommends Italia Mia, Johnny’s Italian Restaurant, Bavaro’s, Bellissimo Italian Eatery, Noble Crust, Italian Touch and Toby’s Little Italy. I also like Louie’s Italian Kitchen, Amici Italian Eatery, Tony & Nello’s, Stefano’s and Soul Sicilian Fusion. You can also find authentic pasta fixings at local farmer’s markets, Mazzaro’s, Ippilito’s and DalMoro’s Fresh Pasta To Go. Beau & Mo’s Italian Eating House: This swanky Chicago-style steakhouse features excellent carne and seafood, equally delicious seafood pasta dishes such as mussels fra diavolo and linguine with clams. DTSP (Downtown St. Petersburg)

Bella Brava: This Beach Drive favorite features New World Italian cuisine, electrifying cocktails, and boutique wines. Pasta Brava features wood-grilled chicken, fresh pappardelle, cotto ham, peas, roasted mushrooms, pecorino, asiago cream or opt for the Seafood Fra Diavolo (squid ink pasta, Gulf shrimp, Calabrian chili, bay scallops, San Marzano tomato and pecorino. The ravioli filled with chicken and provolone in a butter sage white wine sauce, jumbo ravioli filled with pear and gorgonzola cheese in a saffron white wine cream sauce and lobster ravioli are rock stars. Pinellas Park Matteo Trattoria & Pizzeria: New on Central Ave., the Genoa-trained chef whips up fantastic hand-crafted pasta dishes such as Della Casa (mushrooms, green peas, shallots, pancetta in a creamy sauce with strozzapretti pasta), amazing lasagna and a Creamy Cacio di Roma cheese sauce, crushed black peppercorns, tonnarelli pasta. DTSP, Tampa Gigi’s: Just like Nonna used to make, from comforting lasagna and baked ziti (beef and pork, ricotta cheese, noodles and sauce) to my fave, the pasta al fresco (broccoli, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, red onions sautéed in virgin olive oil, garlic butter and white wine sauce served over penne pasta). St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island, DTSP

Grattzi Italian Grille: The place to see and be seen, the virtuoso dishes, fresh pasta and crafted wine/cocktail offerings are superb. You will swoon over the goat cheese baked ziti, Cavatelli al Pesto Genovese (handmade ricotta pasta, fresh pesto sauce, sun dried tomatoes, goat cheese and chicken), Gnochhi Pugliese (handmade potato pasta, crispy pancetta, cremini and porcini mushrooms, fire roasted tomatoes, peas, roasted chicken, in an Asiago cheese sauce) and Pappardelle Giuliana (seared scallops, sweet peas, mushrooms, fresh Roma tomatoes, and baby spinach, on a roasted red pepper and garlic madeira sauce). DTSP Mario’s Ristorante: Best of show is the Carbonara alla Mario, mushrooms, pancetta & black olives sautéed in garlic, olive oil, wine and cream, tossed with your choice of pasta, & finished with parmesan cheese or fresh grouper sautéed in a lemon white wine butter sauce with capers, pine nuts, fresh mushrooms and marinara. Pia’s Trattoria: La dolce vita, from the homemade desserts and pastas to the rustic Tuscan-style garden patio set with gorgeous mismatched linens. Homemade lasagna, cold smoked salmon with horseradish cream cheese, or grilled octopus are sensational as is the pesto verde penne tossed with fresh basil, arugula, garlic, parmesan, pine nuts and virgin olive oil. Live music, a huge patio with evening twinkle lights and spellbinding lunch, dinner, and Tuesday night date specials such as house made meatballs with ricotta, spinach ravioli in alfredo sauce and rigatoni napolitana (Italian sausage, broccoli rabe in garlic white wine). Gulfport Villa Gallace: Whether you dine al fresco overlooking the Intracoastal or inside, the gnocchi with pancetta topped with grilled shrimps in a savory light cream sauce is sublime, the wine list inspired and the limoncello cake a slice of heaven. Keto Cranberry Dishes Perfect for Holidays We like cranberries all year round both for their beautiful color, delicious flavor and health benefits. Fresh cranberries are low in carbs, high in fiber and have been linked to lowering blood pressure and boosting the immune system. Fresh cranberries are considered keto, and in moderation, add pizzazz to your keto diet since they are 87%-90% water. Best of all, you don’t have to go to a bog to bring them home; just order them from Coast Brothers along with these other healthy ingredients. Here are two keto-friendly recipes for the holidays, both turkey and vegetarian friendly. We like the Keto Cranberry Sauce served over mashed cauliflower or keto vegan stuffing. Keto Cranberry Sauce 1 (12 ounce bag) fresh cranberries 1 cup water ½ cup sugar substitute 2 tsp. orange zest Pinch Kosher salt In a medium saucepan, put cranberries, water, sugar, orange zest and salt and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer, stirring frequently, until cranberries are mushy,

approximately 10-12 minutes. Serve at room temperature or chill in a covered dish. Keto Cranberry Orange Zinger Muffins Ingredients 2 ½ cups sifted almond flour 2 cups granulated sugar substitute 2 cups fresh whole cranberries 2 tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. sea salt ½ tsp. orange zest ¼ tsp. cinnamon 8 eggs 8 oz. cream cheese 1 tsp. orange extract ½ cup unsalted butter Instructions: Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Using an electric mixer and a large bowl, combine cream cheese and butter; beat on high until fluffy. Add the sugar substitute and continue mixing. Add the whole eggs one at a time. Stir sifted almond flour, salt, baking powder, cinnamon, orange zest, orange extract and mix well. Fold in whole cranberries and mix well. Pour batter into cupcake-liner muffin tins (2). Bake for 20-25 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Serve warm.

SPIRITS

By Nanette Wiser

Bayboro Brewing

HOLIDAY SPIRITED SIPS The newest wine bar to join Grape Wine Café and Sea Grapes on the beaches is a new wine/ charcuterie spot opening next to Indian Rocks Beach Slyce, name TBD. With Wine Knot closed and Café Largo’s new owners, we welcome a charcuterie and wine tasting oasis on the beaches. If only DTSP’s Flute & Dram or Lolita’s would migrate to the Gulf! Please, Santa. Speaking of holiday goodies, the new 900 Pages of Drinking Wisdom, A Decade in the Making, is the perfect gift for your mixologist. DTSP’s Bayboro Brewing debuted a sunshiney beer (Spraycation) a strawberry, orange, passionfruit ale brewed to support the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance’s award-winning mural festival. It’s a fantastic event or catch up with pals hang-out. Monday through Wednesday, from 4-7pm, kids eat for free! Dino nuggies and crinkle cut fries and BOGO beer for 21+ peeps.

DRINK IN THE SUNSHINE.

St. Pete’s Kozuba & Sons Distillery uses 53-gal American oak barrels and Florida climate to create classic spirits, especially the latest release–uncut 7-year high wheat rye packed with aroma and flavor. For the holidays, their Cranberry & Juniper flavor vodka is the perfect pre-turkey refresher. Make it easy to serve cocktails with their Bar Box Cosmos, Vodka Sours & Negronis. St. Pete Distillery creates luscious liquors. Savor the essence of sunshine with Old St. Pete’s collection of local and artisan spirits crafted in small batches in copper pot stills. They elevate their margaritas with their Tippler Orange Liqueur, rich, ripe & zesty orange & citrus notes with a hint of delicate sweetness. Serve their White Lady with a side of Bing’s “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas.” Old St. Pete White Lady 1.5 oz Old St. Pete Tropical Gin .5 oz Tippler’s Orange Liqueur .75 oz fresh lemon juice Add all ingredients into a shaker, add ice and shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with lemon zest. SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED James Bond drinks them. So did the President FDR and 95-year-old Queen Elizabeth until recently (per doctors’ orders). For me, the only way to drink a martini is dirty, traditionally with olive juice, and now with a cornucopia of reduced “dirty” tonics. The Dirty Martini dates back to 1901, when NYC bartender John O’Connor first muddled the olive into the drink, and later added a splash of olive brine. I like mine with a blue-cheese or feta stuffed olive garnish. Swap out the olive brine/juice for pickle or caper brine for a salty twist. Classic Dirty Martini 2.5 oz. gin or vodka .5 oz. dry vermouth .5 oz. olive brine and 2-4 olives Add the gin or vodka, vermouth and olive brine to a mixing glass filled with ice and stir until well-chilled. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish-skewer of olives.

Gazing out over the Gulf of Mexico with a stellar view of the setting sun, 82 Degrees provides nature imbued interiors and fresh Southern coastal cuisine to launch you into the decadence of an unhurried coastal vacation. Enjoy craft cocktail-sipping, fine wine tasting, and local beer distilling with alfresco dining options and locally sourced fare at a premier location destined to become a favorite.

COVER STORY

Get Ready for the

Best Pot on the Beach By Peter Roos

Outer Banks Boil Company is gaining steam as a new alternative dining experience on St. Pete Beach. 32

NOVEMBER 2021 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

stpetebeach.outerbanksboilcompany.com The Berlin family opened their location in June of this year offering residents and vacationers Signature Low County Seafood Boils. Their mission: Providing customers with a great seafood boil while bringing the family back to the dinner table. Jennifer, James and Logan Berlin are siblings in this affair. While Jennifer is a native to Florida, she met James in the military. They decided to move back to Florida and now call Treasure Island home. Logan and James grew up in Virginia and frequently went to the Outer Banks on vacation, where having a low country seafood boil became a family tradition. Customers can enjoy a signature low country seafood boil in two ways: “You Steam take out” and “We Steam catering.” For their “You Steam take out,” boils are prepped to order with fresh ingredients that consist of jumbo shrimp, spicy Andouille sausage, sweet Vidalia onions, red bliss potatoes, corn on the cob, arranged in a pot. All the fixings (homemade cocktail sauce, lemon, seasoning, and butter) are provided with every order. “Customer’s take the pot home, add a couple cups of liquid of their choice–water, beer, or wine–and then steam it on the stove for 30-60 minutes. Options including huge, delicious scallops, clams and mussels, crab claws and lobster tails, are added with more seasoning halfway through,” said Logan Berlin, co-owner and general manager of the new Dolphin Village Courtyard location, at 4655 Gulf Blvd., St. Pete Beach, 33706, 727-357-BOIL (2645). “We Steam Catering”–Those who don’t want to cook don’t have to. For a modest additional catering fee, the Outer Banks Boil Company can prepare everything for you wherever it’s convenient. “With a little notice, we are willing and able to cater groups from eight to 200,” Berlin continues. We all know that gathering a large group of family/friends for dinner at the beach can be a daunting task. That is where Outer Banks Boil Company is here to help. Most people who come to the coast are seafood lovers and this new cook-at-home trend is obviously popular. Residents and vacationers are calling to reserve dates for backyard boils, beach weddings, birthday parties and corporate events. Outer Banks Boil Company comes, cooks, and cleans up, allowing customers to maximize their beach or family time. They leave you with full bellies and memories you’ll be talking about long after. There are options for landlubbers too. Pulled pork BBQ with a homemade vinegar-based Carolina sauce is available along with sides like coleslaw, corn bread, and Mikes Key Lime Pie. They’ve only been open in St. Pete Beach since June and have already collected an impressive array of five star reviews. Here are a few you may see.

Paul Zulkoski - June 2021 I chose Outer Banks Boil Company to cater a pool party for a little over a dozen friends. What a great choice! Everyone absolutely loved the meal and went back for 2nd, 3rd and even 4th helpings. The ingredients were all top quality and extremely flavorful. Logan did a great job speaking with everybody and answering their questions about a Low Country Boil. And I should also point out that he cleaned up when he was done and hauled out the trash. A perfectly executed catering job. I give Outer Banks Boil Company a true 5 Star rating! Jennifer Beaman Clark - June 2021 Delicious! We served their shrimp and crab boil on Fathers Day. Definitely had some happy dads! Highly recommended.

Valerie Alava Ross - July 2021 Fresh and delicious! Definitely recommend. Will be back! Rebecca Coleman - July 2021 The food is super easy to prepare at home, and it’s delicious!! The staff is very friendly and helpful. The store was very clean.
Rebecca E. - July 2021 This place is fantastic. Seafood boil all packaged up for you, including the pot. All you do is go home, add two cups of water, beer or white wine and boil. Took us 16 minutes and was able to eat a fantastic dinner right at our hotel gazebo during sunset. We skipped all the wait times, the crowds and hardly missed a minute of beach time. This place just opened a couple of months ago and they were so nice and quick. I called and our pot was ready within 15 minutes for pickup. We got The Crab Pot for two and ordered an extra cluster of crab legs for my sons who only wanted that. We are actually considering doing it again while in town! Tina Secor Murphy - July 2021 We had the best experience with Outer Banks Boil Co!!! We wanted to maximize our beach time and not have to rush around, so we had the boil come to us!! Logan was amazing! He did everything he could to make our experience the best for my sister’s family and mine!!! Perfect thing to do on a beach vacay! The food was outstanding, especially the snow crab legs and for our non-seafood friends we had the pulled pork–outstanding food, service, and people!! An 11 on a scale of 1-10. They set up, cook, and clean up–we didn’t have to do anything! Way better than going out–reasonable prices, huge value! We will make this a part of our vacation tradition in St. Pete Beach for sure!!! Thanks Logan and Co!! Murphy & Berry Families!! August 2021 - We truly enjoyed our boil on arrival! This is a must do, Logan was awesome & the shrimp, crab & mussels were delicious! MUSIC & NIGHTLIFE

NOVEMBER 2021 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

BLUES GET ME UP The Downtown Dunedin Merchants Association presents the 30th annual Dunedin Wines the Blues Nov. 13, 2-11pm. Shop, nosh and enjoy music from three stages, including the East Stage sponsored and booked by Suncoast Blues Society: 2-3:15pm – Trey Wanvig Band; 3:45-5pm – The TBone Hamilton Band; 5:30-7pm – Brian Leneschmidt Band; 7:30-9pm – Dottie Kelly Band. Headliners include Selwyn Birchwood, Beth McGee Funky Time Band, Johnny Rawls Band, Damon Fowler and Vanessa Collier.

His band, Horses Wild, just performed at OCC Roadhouse, performs frequently at Niagara Tap and will be performing New Year’s Eve at the Holiday Isles Elk Lodge (open to the public) and also January 22 at the John’s Pass Seafood Festival.

I love them all, especially Birchwood who I have seen dozens of times. “With my music,” says the groundbreaking young blues visionary, Selwyn Birchwood, “I tell my stories in my own way, with my own voice. You won’t ever hear me on stage singing someone else’s songs. Muddy Waters, B.B. King and John Lee Hooker all told their own stories. That’s what I’m doing.” The young guitar and lap steel player calls his original music “electric swamp funkin’ blues,” defined by raw and soulful musicianship played with fire-and-brimstone fervor.

BAR MUSIC SCENE Madeira Beach’s Saltwater Hippie won The Cabbies Awards for Best Bar, and the place rocks with live music, cold beer and good eats seven days a week. Saddle up your Hog and come on down! Fiona Frensch sings her jazzypopanova at Club at Treasure Island, Island Way Grill, Verducci and now at Sea Grapes Wine Bar on Corey Ave.

Horses Wild

For those of us who live DTSP or Gulf Beaches, check out the downtown location. Cage Brewing has built a stage and installed a lighting system–it’s not just a brewery–it’s a concert hall–slight exaggeration, it’s more of a large covered patio than a hall. There will be ukulele lesson and a Muddy Waters of the Ukulele contest, with a prize package and trophy for the best 2-minute ukulele interpretation of a Muddy Waters song on the ukulele. Sign up when you arrive. FYI: UKE IT OUT – Cage Brewing, Dec. 4. Doors 3pm, music 4-10pm. $17 Advance/ $20 door at www.wmnf.org.

UKE IT OUT On Dec. 9, WMNF presents the 6th Annual Ukulele Festival: UKE IT OUT in two locations: St. Pete’s Cage Brewing and Tampa’s New World Brewery. Enjoy ukulele, reggae and bluegrass sounds on all kinds of ukuleles (bass, electric, banjo and acoustic ukes) played by dozens of musicians. There will be food trucks at Cage Brewing, a vintage Hawaiian shirt booth, Luna guitars will be on display, Gulf to Bay Bait and Tackle will be featuring their unique ukuleles and there will be a special ukulele art display by Carolyn Bruszer.

When he’s not performing across the nation, Vattelana is a regular at Coconuts and other local clubs. “I originally started doing stand-up for the same reason every comedian does: a crippling need for attention and a desire to be liked,” he quips.“Thankfully, I outgrew one of those things... I think. I have no ulterior motive on stage other than silliness and I’m very proud of that.” His schedule can be found on his Instagram/Twitter @dylanstandsup.

Jay Legend Originally from Chicago, IL, Jay Legend is one of St. Petersburg’s funniest young comics. Legend was inspired to do stand-up as a means to share his natural inclination and desire to make others laugh. Having worked with national headliner acts such as Preacher Lawson and April Macie, Legend is most excited about November shows with Tampa local Cam Bertrand, running November 18-22 at Side Splitters in

Wesley Chapel.“We’ve got a really tight-knit comedy community and I’m proud to be a part of it,” says Legend. “You receive an authentic version of me on stage – nothing I do is pretend.” Upcoming shows can be found on his Instagram @jaylegendcomedy.

Kye Saunders

Kye Saunders is an up-and-coming young comic from Brandon and performs regularly in the Bay Area and across Florida. After her first open mic, Saunders knew that she had found the great creative love of her life and has been a part of the local scene ever since. Through comedy, Saunders explores where she is and has been as a young woman. “My hope for when people leave one of my shows is that they feel a little bit lighter,” says Saunders. Upcoming shows can be found on her Instagram at @kyesaunders_.

Christina Galston St. Pete born and raised, Christina Galston has spent her life honing her unique cross-cultural upbringing into a powerfully honest sense of humor and razor-sharp wit. Her first comedy credit was being voted her high school class clown in 2004. Since then, she’s gone on to create laughter on MTV Tres, Comedy Central, and on the Wasted Wisdom podcast on Spotify. “The most rewarding part of comedy is when people connect to your messed up stuff,” she says.“Like, when I get messages from fans saying hearing my most vulnerable moments and crazy stories helped them out of dark places.”A regular at Spitfire Comedy Theatre and other local venues, Galston’s upcoming shows can be found on her Instagram/Twitter at @freakinjewrican.

SHOP LOCAL With all the hubbub about do your holiday shopping early, blah blah blah, we humbly suggest that you support your local artists and give gifts of art from local galleries, museum shops, indie and holiday markets, ETSY or even commission a poem or haiku. Lars-Erik Robinson’s illustrations of you or your pet are priceless as are his amazing rock ’n’ roll caricatures. larserarts@myportfolio.com 2022 is the International Year of Glass, so why not look for gifts at The Imagine Museum and Duncan McClellan Gallery? “Cerulean Glow Foglio” is one of the many new works of art by David Patchen, made with UV reactive glass for that cool glow-in -the-dark effect at the Gallery. Another fave? Raven Skyriver captures the fluid nature of molten glass and transforms it into this lifelike work of art, “Sprint,” whose young eyes glisten with life and vitality. Sarasota recently honored Matthew McGee as Favorite Local Actor/Actress in sarasotaout.com’s 2021 OUT Awards. “Some of my most amazing experiences as a theatre artist have been in Sarasota at Asolo Repertory Theatre. I love Sarasota audiences and treasure the friendships I have made there,” McGee says. TAPESTRY MEMORIES Local author Deb Carson grabs lunch regularly with one of Tampa Bay’s most amazing talents. She shared this news with PN: Cuban-born and longtime St. Petersburg resident now living in Tampa, Maria Emilia-Faedo, is devoted to the arts and has worn many hats–a talented teacher (USF), a former arts administrator

(Ringling Museum, Florida CraftArt, city of Clearwater, The Morean Arts Center) and a prolific working artist. Her art appears in public and private collections in the U.S. and around the globe and now one of her two creations in Smithsonian’s American Art Museum’s permanent collection will be featured in an exhibition April 22-Aug. 28, 2022 titled “Subversive, Skilled, Sublime: Fiber Art by Women.” The exhibition features women artists who mastered and subverted everyday materials to create deeply personal artworks. Of her featured work, a quilt, “A Matter of Trust,” Emilia-Faedo says “I collected secrets from friends and strangers, sealed them in ordinary envelopes, and sewed them into the quilt’s pockets.” The envelopes containing the secrets are known only to their authors and were never read by Emilia-Faedo. Also, part of the permanent collection is her work of graphite on paper sewn to wool with steel wire entitled “The Birthing Album.”

Will robots put street artists out of work? Over in Berlin, artist and technologist Niklas Roy has mildly intrigued the graffiti world with his Graffomat, a DIY setup that automates the process of tagging, promising “interesting and inspiring aesthetic outcomes.” Now, instead of working that spray can yourself, you can just put your design into a computer, then stand back and watch a machine do the work while you vape and watch YouTube videos on your phone. Roy’s Graffomat joins other attempts to cut robots in on the street art heat including Estonian inventor Mihkel Joala’s SprayPrinter, a wall-crawling robot.

COREY SUNDAY MARKET UPDATE We are so happy that cooler temps have arrived, and we are back to our regular Market Season on Corey Ave! This month we are introducing you to Lev Pasikhov, founder of The Florida Fruit Cooperative. “Like much of life, a happy accident born of love and need,” says Lev. When COVID hit, it simultaneously forced Lev’s food truck off the road and scared folks from going to stores. Lev realized food scarcity was becoming an even bigger issue, and he now needed a new job. Having access to some special farmers that try to grow the way nature intended, Lev began traveling to Pine Island every week to harvest and deliver the same locally grown tropical fruit he loved to use in his smoothies door-to-door in St. Pete, sharing his knowledge of tropical fruits grown in Florida, some of which at first glance cause some to do a double take! “You can’t beat the freshness and flavor, which equals superior nutrition.” Lev is passionate about cultivating and regenerating the conscientious farmers that make up the Florida food shed, and much of the fruit is sourced from regenerative farms in the area. The door-to-door delivery led him to markets and he is now at the Corey Ave. Sunday Market on St. Pete Beach delivering the best quality locally grown fruit every week, harvested in-season just days before. Join us every Sunday 10am-2pm.

By Nanette Wiser The study spotlights the significance of taxonomy – the study of defining and classifying groups of biological organisms – and calls Graham a “pioneer in ecological studies with Aurelia.”

A research team, which includes Graham’s former student Luciano Chiaverano from the University of Southern Mississippi, gave the jellyfish its official name in the journal, “Aquatic Biology.” They found the new species off Dauphin Island, Alabama.

JELLY BELLIES His expertise in jellyfish is so renowned, Monty Graham, director of the Florida Institute of Oceanography and professor of integrative biology at USF, has a new species of jellyfish bearing his name. The Aurelia montyi is one of 28 Aurelia species, also known as “moon jellies,” because their pale bell resembles a full moon. Native to the Gulf of Mexico, the Aurelia montyi can grow to be the size of a dinner plate. It doesn’t pack much of a sting, like all Aurelia species, but may cause minor skin irritation in some individuals when physically encountered.

SEE SEA SOLUTIONS The USF College of Marine Science (USF CMS) has joined the Ocean Visions Research Consortium. The mission of the Ocean Visions Network is to remedy the disconnect between research and ocean solutions, and to mobilize research universities and institutions, professional ocean-focused societies, NGOs, IGOs, foundations, business and financial institutions, into action.

“It’s good to get outside and spend some time. Birding is challenging. Her hobby paid off, as she is the recipient of a $5,000 Black and Latinx Birder Scholarship, a program in its second year sponsored by Amplify the Future, a volunteer-run organization aimed at expanding equity in conservation efforts. “Birding takes practice and time. I got started by taking [Environmental Science and Biology] Professor Beth Forys’s Field Ornithology class in winter term in January,” Fana says.

One key focus area for Ocean Visions is to build coastal resiliency, which aligns well with research priorities at the CMS, said CMS Dean Tom Frazer. The CMS also oversees the new state-funded Flood Hub for Applied Research & Innovation. Ocean Visions Network research and collaboration hopes to reverse the climate crisis in the ocean (e.g., ocean-based solutions to thermal and chemical stress, ocean-based carbon dioxide removal) and to build a climate-resilient aquatic food system (e.g., aquaculture, including microalgae and macroalgae, ocean-based low carbon diet).

RECYCLE, REPEAT What would you do with at least $156 a year? Using a reusable water bottle you could save an average of 156 plastic bottles annually which is money in your pocket and less trash to Pinellas landfills! Take the #ReduceYourUse pledge today at www.reduceyourusetampabay.org.

TRICK OR TWEET Eckerd College senior Fana Scott is a birdwatching enthusiast. “For me, it’s relaxing,” says Fana, a senior environmental studies and biology student from Washington, D.C.

PET HEALTH

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE! It is hard to believe that once again we are at that time of year. We all celebrate in different ways, however one thing remains consistent, which is how much we love our pets. Most of us (admittedly, even we veterinary professionals) express this with food. We have a large meal with various dishes varying from traditional and cultural fare to delicacies we would not otherwise have and it becomes difficult not to share with out pets. Caution is advised as our pets may not be able to “stomach” our holiday fare. Common ailments we see as a result of sharing table fare are:

• Gastritis/enteritis- Simply put, this is vomiting and nausea that results from inflammation of the stomach and small intestine. • Colitis - Diarrhea. Typically, this is a result of the table fare causing a shift in the natural bacteria in the colon. This inflames the colon, causing anything from soft stools to frequent, large volume liquid stools. • Pancreatitis - The pancreas is a very important organ that is responsible for secreting the main digestive enzymes that break down food (as well as other important tasks). Ingestion of foods rich in fats are typically, but not always, the cause of inflammation that induces pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can manifest as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea but can become severe, causing a painful belly, lethargy, and dehydration. In rare cases, this can become so severe that the pancreas can release the enzymes into the abdomen causing peritonitis (inflammation of the abdominal cavity) and even necrotizing pancreatitis (in essence where the pancreas can die off).

By Dr. Jonathan Pierce The tempting smells that waft from our waste containers could cause our pets to help themselves, causing the above illnesses. This is also dangerous, as ingestion of not only food can occur but also bones, corn cobs, food containers, etc. could be ingested and cause stomach or intestinal blockages. Make sure that your garbage containers are stowed away in an area that your pet can’t get to. The above illnesses may take very simple supportive treatment, however, could become severe enough to require hospitalization or even surgical treatment. If your pet shows any signs of being ill, please contact your veterinarian. Have a safe and very happy holiday season! “Get Sirius About Your Future”

November 2021 Communication and transportation planet Mercury makes a challenging aspect to transformational Pluto as November begins. It’s bringing about needed changes in these areas that are under extreme stress on a global level. The REtrograde cycle that stimulated this energy ended a couple of weeks ago, but the shadow phase continued the situation until now as it creates a climax. Although this aspect is ending, the issues REvealed are not over yet and we will continue to see ongoing developments. The New Moon in Scorpio on the 4th begins the lunar cycle this month. Scorpio is a private, resourceful, and passionate sign that doesn’t do anything halfway. This cycle activates Uranus the planet of the unexpected and unpredictable. Suddenly you may want to break old habits, become independent, and leave behind anything holding you back. Clever Mercury visits Scorpio on the 5th adding its detective intellect to this combo. You can uncover information now and research the new plans you’re making. Love planet Venus moves into serious Capricorn also on the 5th. We do good in business now but take personal relationships slowly. The Full Beaver Moon in Taurus on the 19th is a Lunar Eclipse! This peak of our lunar cycle brings out material and practical concerns. It’s time to look at our values and work on bringing more security into our lives. The Sun visits optimistic, generous Sagittarius on the 21st getting us in the mood for Thanksgiving, and is joined by restless Mercury on the 24th. Sagittarius is the sign of travel and many will feel the need to be on the move now whether planned in advance or just last-minute it works!

ENCOURAGING WORDS

What You Focus On Increases “Both abundance and lack exist simultaneously in our lives, as parallel realities. It is always our conscious choice which secret garden we will tend...when we choose not to focus on what is missing from our lives but are grateful for the abundance that’s present – love, health, family, friends, work, the joys of nature and personal pursuits that bring us pleasure – the wasteland of illusion falls away and we experience Heaven on earth.” ~ Sarah Ban Breathnach With Thanksgiving approaching quickly, are you ready to raise the altitude of your attitude of gratitude? In some Eastern teachings, they proclaim we are all born with the “seed potential” of all possibilities and that it is the seeds we nurture with our energy of focused attention that come to fruition. It is no secret that what we focus our attention upon rises in the field of our awareness and tends to become part of our experience. In challenging times (including a pandemic), the tendency for many of us is to stare at what seems to be missing – or what’s wrong – rather than the good that lies right in front of us. Practicing conscious gratitude activates and directs the creative energy of life that nurtures the seed 62

potential within, which contains the spiritual DNA of a life worth living.

the weeks of Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas soaring on high with gratitude.

For most of us, expressing conscious gratitude is not something we generally “remember” to do because the collective consciousness obsesses on staring at what is missing in our lives. We can transcend the vortex and gravitational pull of the collective consciousness with the conscious practice of gratitude; it’s just a matter of remembering to remember. William A. Ward wrote, “God gave you a gift of 86,400 seconds today. Have you used one to say, ‘Thank you?’” When you think about it, a second or two is all that takes to practice gratitude. Who doesn’t have at least a few seconds to spare each day for such a powerful practice...?

Some say that with clear intention we can form a new habit in three to four weeks. What better habit could we have than to live daily, naturally focusing on what is good about our lives? With a little effort, “thanks living” can become a conscious practice every day of the year – we don’t have to wait until the fourth Thursday in November each year to be reminded of how blessed we truly are. Perhaps Meister Eckhart put it most simply and most eloquently when he wrote, “If the only prayer you said in your whole life was ‘thank you,’ that would suffice.” I encourage you to join with me in making “thank you” your mantra for the next 30 days and witness an infinite, expanding, abundant universe at work; what you focus on increases. Your 86,400 seconds begin now!

As we go into this holiday season with the observation of Thanksgiving, I would like to give you a gift that will help raise the altitude of your attitude of gratitude, and keep it there. It’s a free 30-day Gratitude Abundance journal which you can download from my website at www.dennismerrittjones. com/gratitude. I invite you to print a copy of the journal and use it mindfully. Better yet, print out several of them and pass them out to friends and family. I detail the suggestions on how to use the journal on the inside front cover. If you begin the journal the week of Thanksgiving, it will take you into

I consider Peter and Renee Roos – and those who read Paradise News (including you) – my extended family. In the midst of all that has transpired in the past year-anda-half may we all remember how important family and friends really are and make room in our minds and hearts to express our gratitude daily. Thank you for being part of my family! Peace, Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones Copyright © 2021 - DMJ Presentations LLC www.DennisMerrittJones.com
