October and November are great months to be in Florida. Evening weather is pleasant for movies and concerts in parks like the Clearwater Jazz Festival, now at the Sound, the SPB Fall concert series and downtown St. Pete’s Movies in the Park. Our cover story this month is a salute to the non-profit organizations that work to keep our Gulf and Bay waters clean and protecting marine life. At the top of the list is Tampa Baywatch, celebrating their 30th anniversary this fall. Congratulations Peter Clark.

Most of us dodged another bullet as September began, when Hurricane Idalia raced past early predictions of a Tampa Bay landfall, hitting instead 200 miles north of us leaving a 100-year-old oak tree leaning against the governor’s mansion in Tallahassee. Some of our neighbors had Gulf water in their pools, their garages and their homes, and many lost parts of their landscape as the surge behind the storm breached 50-year-old seawalls and made streets impassable for hours. FEMA cleanup is underway. There are full instructions on most city websites.

In mid-August, southern California got drenched by a hurricane for the first time in a century It is obvious global warming is affecting our weather already, making life less predictable. We still have 60 days of storm season ahead. The Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, and Atlantic Ocean are hotter than usual, so the potential for powerful storms still exists. Keep your plan in place.

The Alligator and Wildlife Discovery Center was devastated by fire this summer. Much more than a “zoo,” Sonny Flynn had built a home for rescued exotic creatures and she and her staff adopted them. While the John’s Pass facility is being repaired, they have opened temporarily at 14805 Gulf Blvd., Madeira Beach . A new stop near The Pier may be coming to downtown St. Pete for the SunRunner station adjoining the Sundial Parking Garage. The city council approved allocating $605,000 in September to build the station and install fiber optic communication lines along the 10.3-mile route to St. Pete Beach. In August, PSTA’s board voted to charge $2.25 for a one-way SunRunner ticket starting 10/1 instead of 11/1 to help alleviate St. Pete Beach residents’ concern about rising crime and increaseed homeless presence since the bus’s inception.

The U.S. Small Business Administration is now offering low-interest loans starting as low as 2.5 percent for Pinellas homeowners and 4 percent for businesses to make repairs and cover economic losses from Hurricane Idalia. Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application

The City of St. Pete Mayor Ken Welch has approved an emergency resolution to help residents repair and rebuild their homes. Effective immediately, residents can utilize recreational vehicles and travel trailers for temporary shelter and housing on their own property and still be in compliance with code enforcement policies. For the next six months, St. Petersburg Code Enforcement will suspend issuing fines, citations and penalties related to this specific sheltering and housing plan for residents who have been displaced by Hurricane Idalia. St. Pete residents in adversely affected areas can contact the Housing and Neighborhood Services Administration for additional assistance:

ON THE MOVE According to St. Pete Catalyst, Pinellas County is preparing to sell its 14 county facilities in downtown Clearwater that a 400-page report says are “functionally obsolete” and underutilized. “We currently have about 560,000 square feet in downtown Clearwater. (A consultant) went through our staffing and said, ‘the way you do business today, you only need 330,000 square feet’ – that’s a 40% reduction in space,” Assistant County Administrator Kevin Knutson said during a commission meeting. The county spends $4M annually on maintenance for the facilities. Over the next several decades, the county’s spending would total $146M to keep the existing facilities afloat. A new campus project is estimated to roughly cost $270-$333M; site selection is still in discussion.

Suncoast Surf Shop posted on social about their founder, now jamming in heaven with Jimmy B: “If you knew Joe, you know that him and Jimmy go way back. Who remembers the infamous Wine & Dine dinner boat cruise in 1976? Organized by Joe, Jimmy, and a couple other close friends, tickets sold for $75 a piece or $125 for 2 for an all you can eat and drink concert experience. A little-known fact about that trip - by the time they paid the liquor and food tab they had nearly broke even on their profits from the cruise. Joe and Jimmy also had their share of sailing adventures together, one time, as they sailed from Treasure Island to make their way down to Key West for Jimmy’s concert, they sailed past their destination and found themselves approaching the shores of Cuba. All they had on board that trip was a few cases of beer and a couple packs of Reese’s peanut butter cups.”

WHERE AM I Flamingos blown off-course by Hurricane Idalia landed here, with sightings all over town and in front of the Bilmar Hotel. Seacoast Seabird Sanctuary nursed a few exhausted birds back to health. American Flamingo was native to Florida at one time but were hunted to near extinction for their pretty pink feathers. If you do happen to spot these flamingos in our area, it’s best to give them as much space as possible, and to not disturb them.

He’s a generalist with experience in residential and commercial, and I’m learning so much from him.” Licensed in both California and Florida, Britt’s working with Jack and “carrying the torch” on Emerald Sands, the resort replacing Miramar in SPB. “It’s a boutique 54-room hotel with restaurants and a rooftop pool bar and it’s going to change the attitude of how people look at hospitality here. It will have a luxury, fifties modernist look with luxury amenities, and the interiors have a nautical feel.”

She’s also collaborating on Windward Pass Resort, north of Hotel Zamora once owned by Beth Morean and soon to be a 100-room resort hotel with waterfront amenities, public spaces (a continuous pedestrian walkway site) and incorporate amenities for

Canadian Rockies

Our memorable bucket-list tour – our fifth from Grand Circle Travel, took four years due to Covid closing the borders. It began in Calgary, Alberta, and ended in Vancouver, British Columbia, including stops in Banff, Kamloops and Kelowna. Our 36-member tour group came from 13 states and Australia.

Our tour guide, Eric Hall, has been leading groups over 20 years. He lives in Kelowna and was extremely knowledgeable about every aspect of our tour stops and the entire itinerary. Our driver, Martin Dennis, from Montreal, also has been with Grand Circle but this was his first time on this route. The trip included many beautiful sights – stunning scenery of lakes, mountains and glaciers that are melting more rapidly due to climate change. Among the daily highlights: we had a brief visit to the Calgary Zoo and a longer one to the majestic Central Library. We then met informally with our tour guide and group, sharing backgrounds. A brief walking tour of downtown included views of 15+ walkways connecting buildings several floors high to keep workers cool and dry during bad or hot weather.

Our tour of Calgary included a lunch stop on the revolving restaurant on the 626-foot-tall Tower – tallest building in the city with great panoramic views. We also visited the 1988 Winter

Olympics headquarters with a photo stop. En route to Banff, we stopped at the Boundary Ranch, a dude ranch also the site of many TV shows and movies.

We had a morning visit to the Buffalo Nations Museum with a wonderful, guided tour of every indigenous Plains Indians’ life-size Rockies’ mammal – from the very small ferret to the large grizzly and black bears. Our afternoon trip to Banff Gardens on Bow River included a 7,614-foot-high gondola ride to the top of Sulphur Mountain with panoramic views of the entire area. After a stop at stunning turquoise Lake Louise, one of the most photographed in the Rockies, we had a morning sail on Lake Maligne with a brief stop on Spirit Island, sacred to many of the local indigenous bands. Our long drive to Jasper included an unforgettable walk on the Athabasca Glacier on the Columbian Ice Field that may be gone in 15 years due to climate change. Indigenous speaker Joe Urie gave a memorable talk, using local pelts, skulls and antlers to trace the history of many local bands who had lived in the area. Our trip to Kamloops included views of both the Canadian Pacific Railroad, completed in 1886, and the Canadian National Railroad, opened in 1912, making the city an important transportation hub. Along the way we saw an overpass model for local wildlife to go safely over the highway.

Our trip to Kelowna included a stop at one of the oldest residential Indian schools in the Rockies. Like the U.S., indigenous children were taken from their homes and schooled in church-run schools – forbidden to use their language or styles of life. In Kelowna, we had a morning visit to the Hillcrest Farms Market & Cherry Orchard with owner-operators Chanchal and daughters Dilray and Davida Bal. At home, our cherries at the local supermarket were from Kelowna! That afternoon, we were at the Gray Monk Winery, one of more than 100 using Lake Okanagon as their main water source for their vineyards.

We had morning visits to Penticton and then Peachland for a nice lunch after visits to an old 1898 schoolhouse and new art gallery, with informative talks. That evening we had a nice dinner cruise on Lake Okanagon. As we went from Alberta to British Columbia, the high-peaked Rockies became the low-humped Columbia Mountains! Our tour of Vancouver included a stop at the Sun Yat-Sen Oriental Garden with house, rocks and greenery transported from China and re-created here. That afternoon in lovely Stanley Park, we had our walking tour with a stop at the totem poles representing indigenous bands, for a group photo. That evening we had our farewell dinner and said goodbye to our new friends.

This was one of our more unforgettable trips – with many photo memories. We have much in common with our Canadian neighbors!

CAFFEINE MATTERS Dr. Mark Hyman reminds us that if you love your morning cup of coffee, a recent study found positive neurobiological impacts from drinking coffee using functional MRIs such as boosted connectivity in the higher visual network and the right executive control network, which are linked to working memory, cognitive control, and goal-directed behavior. These same effects were not found from caffeine-infused water, meaning the coffee was impacting the brain through ways other than its caffeine content. Researchers found that individuals drinking coffee exhibited a heightened state of preparedness, being more responsive and attentive to external stimuli compared to the control group. This could mean even decaf coffee may hold some brain-boosting benefits, though more data is needed.

TEED OFF Beginning 10/1, Florida teens can’t drive golf carts on public roads without a valid driver’s license or learner’s permit, according to a new state law and Dr. Meghan Martin at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital hopes it will improve safety. According to WUSF Health News, Martin said that golf cart injuries have increased over the last three years and some of the injuries are significant. The pediatric emergency medicine physician says All Children’s has treated 16 children and teens for serious golf cart injuries this year, according to the hospital’s trauma registry. And for parents who allow young children to sit on their laps while riding in the carts, she recommends parents use car seats for their little ones and prevent them from falling off the cart.

HANGRY? You may be lacking protein, a key in managing appetite. According to a recent study, people with higher protein intake feel fuller and think less about food. Other contributing factors include poor sleep which inhibits leptin production, a hormone linked to feeling full or dehydration where you confuse feeling thirsty with feeling hungry (increase water and water-rich foods like watermelon to stay hydrated). Distracted eating can increase appetite, calorie intake, and weight gain. Do you drink smoothies or meal replacement shakes instead of eating solid foods or eat too fast? Slow down and chew to help curb your appetite. Consider talking to your physician if you’re still hungry to see if an underlying health condition may be contributing to your excess hunger.

Parc provides opportunities for children and adults with developmental disabilities to exercise their independence and experience life to the fullest. “One of the things that we recognize is that even though we have been here for 70 years, there are so many people moving into this area that are new and not familiar with us, so we’re on a mission to spread the word about Parc,” says Michelle Detweiler, president and CEO of Parc. “We are a humanitarian organization. It’s just not the people that we serve. It’s our 320 employees, many who have worked here for 40+ years. To them, it’s more than a job; it’s a passion.”

The 10-acre Pinellas County campus is home to eight+ buildings that include residential homes, classrooms, art studios, and offices that serve children and adults with developmental disabilities. There are also two off-campus residential homes and several programs that operate within local businesses and schools. Parc is home to 94 adults and 539+ individuals participate

in Parc programs. New is the $55,000 grant from the Truist Foundation to fund the Adult Day Training Transition Program.

For Detweiler, the mission is also personal. Her sister was born with severe disabilities, and she watched her parents struggle to place her in an institution which was the only option years ago. “They were housed in horrible places and conditions,” says Detweiler, “This population is invisible to most. They deserve every opportunity that you and I have. We have made great strides towards helping and advocating for this very special population…but so much more is needed. We are the voice and have always been that voice. We advocate and sometimes fight on the state level and all the way down to the county level for the rights and needs for everyone.”

A parenting plan governs the relationship between the parents regarding the child. Time-sharing schedule means a timetable that must be included in the parenting plan that specifies the time, including overnights and holidays, that a child will spend with each parent. If developed and agreed to by the parents of a child, it must be approved by the court.

Jane Radix has a secret. The medical writer is really a fashionista and local art collector who lives in the Edge District of downtown St. Pete who followed her hair stylist from Brooklyn to St. Pete in 2005.

The local art scene captured her imagination, and she began to meet artists contributing to the growth of the vibrant community we enjoy today.

“During the pandemic, I enjoyed the online art shows hosted by Chad Mize and added to my art collection. Then I had an epiphany. Why not help artists survive uncertain times?” And Radix Collection (RX) was born.

As the Principal and Curator, Jane works with local artists to design and sell sustainable, print-on-demand artwear that features their work online at RadixColleCtion.

of Spring 2023 will be available such as swimsuits. Fall 2023 will showcase Derek Donnelly, Kris Meenan and Saumitra and feature more street designs; think hoodies, raincoats, cozy bathrobes for all body types.

Her mission? “I’d like to bring a piece of the art scene that makes Tampa Bay so special to fans as wearable art, so wherever they go wearing RX, they bring the art scene and its energy with them and builds a bigger fan base for the artists.”

Fashion shows and art markets expand the fashion line and artists’ footprint, with a fall/ winter show. “We had a great start with a poolside fashion show at The Wet Spot in downtown St Pete. Twenty-one models, mostly local artists and some local business owners and workers walked the runway, bringing incredible energy and their own unique style to complement the designs,” says Radix.

The design process is collaborative. “Since we are working with print-on-demand items that start out white and are produced through one-off all-over printing, we look at available items and marry them with the artwork. If I am aware of existing work that I think will present well on clothing I will make a recommendation, sometimes we will work together to explore work I have never seen, and other times the artist will design specifically for the clothing.”

Radix works with a sustainable manufacturer that works out of a single factory in the UK called CONTRADO.

“They are committed to minimizing environmental impact and drop ship items directly to customers in less than two weeks,” she says.

Shane McClanahan was named the Tampa Bay Rays 2023 nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One, an annual recognition of a Major League player who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions, both on and off the field. As part of the annual program, each MLB Club nominates one player to be considered for the league-wide award in tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character.

Shane was first introduced to Buddy Baseball through his relationship with Dennis Mueller and his son Zach – aka “Big Dog.” They were his biggest supporters at the University of South Florida and became close friends. Dennis is a board member of Buddy Baseball, and after hearing more, Shane decided to get involved. Since then, he has volunteered time and financial support to the organization. Buddy Baseball is a non-competitive recreational baseball

league serving the Tampa Bay community for boys and girls ages 8 to 22 with unique abilities.

Shane continues to visit Buddy Baseball’s fields and pitch to the kids during games. He has also worked with Rays Corporate Partner Kahwa Coffee to direct a portion of proceeds to benefit the Buddy Baseball organization. In 2022, he donated $2,500, matched by the MLBPA, toward their fundraising for an accessible picnic shelter between their fields. With Shane’s enthusiastic participation, Tropicana Field has played host to the Rays Baseball Magic

Clinic, with Major League players and coaches leading youth players in drills and mini games between the teams of Buddy Baseball. Inspired by Shane’s involvement, every Monday home game for the Rays is now “Magic Monday,” a day when athletes from Buddy Baseball are invited to take the field with the Major Leaguers for the performance of the National Anthem. Each child leaves with a baseball and an unforgettable memory to carry with them.

Friday 9/15 marked the 22nd annual Roberto Clemente Day presented by Capital One. As part of the league-wide celebration, the Roberto Clemente Day logo appeared on the bases and official dugout lineup cards and a customized tribute video to Roberto was shown in all MLB ballparks. The league-wide winner of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One will be honored at the 2023 World Series following selection by a blue-ribbon panel and by fan vote, that will count as one vote among those cast by the panel.

Carol Perry’s writing has been described as fast-paced cozy, beguiling, and entertaining, but her favorite quote is from a fan who said, “You really put me there.” And that is Perry’s intention with every story. Her mysteries are filled with compelling characters that engage the reader with each chapter.

Perry has been reading and writing her entire life. It started when her wish list for Santa was filled with book titles, and her passion for the written word grew into a full-time job as an advertising copywriter. She later wrote non-fiction articles for magazines and newspapers, and with the publication of “Sand Castle Summer,” in 1988, Perry became a published novelist. She’s written 25 books in total and currently writes two cozy mystery series that some have described as “Nancy Drew for Grownups.”

The Witch City Mysteries are set in Salem, Mass., with a continuing cast of characters. Perry was born in Salem on Halloween Eve so she’s able to write with local familiarity. Her Haunted Haven Mystery series is based in Florida and has a touch of the paranormal.

A career highlight came after getting a letter from Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor after Perry included her in her “Ten Women: Political Pioneers” book. “She wrote to thank me for including her in my book. I was impressed to get a letter from the stationery of the United States Supreme Court,” said Perry.

Perry’s characters are a composite of real-life characters, and she’s occasionally used the real names of friends from high school. “I need to be in the favorite character with a lot of my readers. They’re actually a composite of my character,” said Perry. Her novels always have a murder, but the death is not descriptive and while her books can be romantic, “we don’t follow them to the bedroom,” said Perry. She’s been writing long enough that her early characters didn’t have computers or cell phones.

THE ECO WARRIORS

Pinellas County’s beaches and marine life are a national treasure, winning awards and setting the bar high for conservation practices. But is it enough? Today Mother Nature has many challenges, with increasing development, traffic, and climate change and those who love Paradise will need to work together to protect our beaches and marine life.

Luckily for us, there are dozens of universities (USF St. Pete, Eckerd College), businesses, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, city and Pinellas County organizations working together as Eco Warriors. Battling by their side are local partners in Pinellas - Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Seabird Sanctuary, Coastal Wildlife Advocacy Group, Audubon Society, Water Warriors, Tampa Bay Estuary Program, Sea Turtle Conservancy, Keep Pinellas Beautiful and Tampa Bay Watch, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Educating the next generation to be stewards of the land is in full swing at Tampa Bay Watch’s Discovery Center on St. Pete Pier, which celebrated its three-year anniversary this summer and just added a mobile science unit for classes off-site. The St. Pete Science Festival and Marine Quest Feb. 10, 2024, the upcoming relaunched Science Center and Great Explorations also engage families to get involved.

All these organizations focus on different slices of the conservation pie. Their mission? To research, educate, protect, and rehabilitate where needed, using volunteers and raising funds to make a difference. These marine conservation first responders need your help, and Paradise NEWS wants to share some of their amazing stories in the hope you will get involved in protecting our future. Clean water and beaches, healthy coral and marine flora and the lives of sea turtles, manatees, birds, fish and other wildlife depend on us. This month, we look at four eco-warriors and issues to watch.

HELP KEEP PINELLAS BEAUTIFUL With a new location and mural on their building, Keep Pinellas Beautiful continues their mission started in 1992 to conserve and beautify the natural environment by community engagement and education, focusing on projects that prevent litter, reduce waste, conservation and beautification and community greening. Cleaning our public spaces, parks, neighborhoods, and shorelines is only part of the picture; we’re about people working with people for the betterment of our communities. Keep Pinellas Beautiful provides volunteer opportunities that develop individual responsibility and environmental stewardship, partnering with local governments, businesses, schools, nonprofits, and neighborhood organizations to turn public spaces into beautiful places.

MEET BeBot Donated to Keep Florida Beautiful by Surfing’s Evolution and Preservation Foundation, a charitable organization that maintains healthy Florida beaches, the BeBot serves as a teaching tool to work alongside cleanup volunteers. Thanks to Seagram’s Escapes investment in local beaches, the BeBot toured 14 beaches in Pinellas County July 2022, and this small golf cart-sized robot searching for tiny plastic marine and other debris will continue to be a game-changer. It does not require fuel; it runs on a mix of solar and battery power.

COASTAL WILDLIFE ADVOCACY

At the start of this past sea turtle season, CWAG conducted lighting surveys on all the beachfront properties on St. Pete Beach and learned that no one was compliant with the city’s Marine Turtle Protection Ordinance.  CEO Lisa Reich was saddened. “During the past 12 years, I have watched thousands of hatchlings lose their lives due to the

problematic lighting on St. Pete Beach.  As of mid-sea turtle season more than 50% of the nests that have hatched have disoriented.  What that means is that the hatchlings go towards the problematic lighting instead of the light reflecting off the Gulf of Mexico and end up in pools, parking lots, storm drains, beachfront establishments, and some even cross Gulf Boulevard.”

The solution is simple. CWAG has made it their mission to educate the city, the residents, the resorts and tourists on sea turtle friendly guidelines. CWAG will also conduct a free lighting survey to any beachfront property to assist them with making the necessary lighting changes and modifications. In May, the organization worked with The Postcard Inn to discuss what lights needed to be changed, and they did everything CWAG recommended. As of July, they are in compliance. BEACH RENOURISHMENT Walking the beaches after Idalia reveals how much of the beach has been lost, especially in Indian Rocks and Sunset Beach and the complete devastation of dunes in some areas. We need Pinellas County and the US Army Corps of Engineers to reach an agreement and approve beach renourishment as they have since 1966 when they first partnered. Recently, this Pinellas County Shore Protection Project has been indefinitely suspended due to policy changes in Washington, DC, as the federal government now requires securing perpetual easements from property owners to ensure that public access is available and maintained on renourished beaches.

In the past, we have satisfied these requirements by recognizing Florida’s historic tradition of public beach access and obtaining easements on private beach property landward of our statedetermined “Erosion Control Line” that is the effective boundary of private ownership. Easements have historically been obtained where the sand is being placed on the private side of the Erosion

Control Line, and where appropriate easements cannot be obtained, renourishment is simply skipped to avoid jeopardizing the entire coastline. Post-Idalia, Pinellas County and city governments have been informed that due to decisions made in Washington, the entire Pinellas County Shore Protection Project has now been halted. City and county officials are discussing and may be implementing measures to deal with beach erosion. Learn more on their websites.

Serve pumpkin soup chowder or carve orange and yellow peppers into Jack-O’Lanterns, stuff them with sausage, rice and onions then bake and serve. For dessert, set up a candy buffet with treats in glass jars, seasonal cupcakes and this quirky fruit fun. Happy hauntings!

SOUR PATCH GRAPES Glittery goodness and easy peasy to make.

Ingredients 1 1/2 lb. green grapes, ½ lemon, 1 package cherry Jell-O, 1 package orange Jell-O, 1 package lemon Jell-O, package lime Jell-O

Directions Empty each Jell-O packet into its own gallon-size resealable plastic bag. Remove grapes from stems and rinse in a colander and shake till the grapes are damp, not wet.

Squeeze lemon juice over grapes and toss with your hands to coat the grapes. Place a handful of grapes in each bag of Jell-O mix, seal, then shake to coat. Remove from bags and serve.

SHINE MURAL FESTIVAL

Street art is trending around the world. But only in St. Pete does it SHINE. The St. Petersburg Arts Alliance’s annual SHINE Mural Festival returns for its ninth iteration Oct. 13-22. Our internationally renowned festival celebrates the form of artwork that goes back millennia. Our cave-dwelling forebears’ cave paintings of animals, hands, and symbols reflected their culture and community values for all to see. Public art expresses a community’s unique values, so we’re seeing it all over St. Pete and beyond.

This year SHINE will add 14 new murals to the 150 or so SHINE murals around St. Pete. Street art-related events, tours, and “Bright Spot” community projects are also in the works.

Having REFLECTION’s support will make it possible for SHINE to create more than 25 murals during the next couple of years, said SHINE Director Jenee Priebe.

What makes SHINE murals stand out from the 500 or so murals around St. Pete is that the artists control the entire process, Priebe said. Most on the sides of buildings are commissioned by the owners, who typically have a say. And if it’s signage, permits may be required. “With SHINE, artists always get full creative control,” Priebe said. “We get such a diversity of art. I love that!”

Navigating Property Law and Estate Planning

Each type of deed holds distinct implications for rights, responsibilities, and transfers. In this article, we’ll shed light on their nuances and guide readers towards a clearer understanding of the choices at hand.

Warranty Deed: Unwavering Assurance

The Warranty Deed stands as the bedrock of property ownership in Florida, guaranteeing the buyer that the seller holds clear title and has the right to transfer the property. This deed offers a robust level of protection against any prior claims or encumbrances. Both the buyer and the seller have their interests safeguarded, making it a common choice for residential transactions.

Quitclaim Deed: The Simplicity of Transfer This is sometimes referred to, although incorrectly, as the Quick deed. Unlike the Warranty Deed, it does not

guarantee clear title or protection against potential claims. Instead, it conveys the interest of the grantor to the grantee, making it useful for transferring property within families, divorces, or other situations where the parties are well-acquainted with each other and the property’s history. However, by using this deed you may waive protections you previously had. It is important that this deed be used sparingly.

Special Warranty Deed: Limited Yet Defined The Special Warranty Deed presents a middle ground between the Warranty and Quitclaim deeds. While it offers some level of protection, it only covers issues that arose during the seller’s ownership, leaving potential prior claims unaddressed. This type of deed is often utilized in commercial real estate transactions, where the seller’s exposure to risk is somewhat controlled, yet the buyer is still afforded a degree of assurance.

Ladybird Deed: Enhanced Life Estate

Deed A Ladybird Deed is a type of property ownership arrangement that can be used in estate planning and is unique to Florida. Its primary purpose is to allow a property

owner to transfer their real property to designated beneficiaries upon their death while retaining control over the property during their lifetime. This also allows the property to pass to beneficiaries outside of probate, upon the owner’s death.

The Day of the Dead (Día de Los Muertos) is a Mexican holiday where families come together to celebrate and honor their loved ones who have passed away. Unlike Halloween, which focuses on spooky and scary elements, the Day of the Dead is all about celebrating and remembering the deceased. The belief is that on October 31st, the gates of heaven open at midnight, allowing the spirits of deceased children, called angelitos, to reunite with their families for 24 hours. On November 2nd, the spirits of adults come down to join in the festivities.

During these special days, families create altars called ofrendas, which are adorned with colorful flowers, candles, food, toys for the children, and shots of mezcal for the adults. People also gather in cemeteries to clean tombstones, have meals on grave sites, and share memories of their loved ones.

Traditional foods associated with the Day of the Dead can be found in local markets, and one of the most famous symbols of the holiday is the sugar skulls, which are decorative and edible confections. Casa Tina in Dunedin hosts an annual Day of the Dead street party Oct. 23.

Artist Pamela Joy Trow’s Day of the Dead art was inspired by the vibrant Mexican community in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A REMARKABLE WOMAN

Leonora Carrington produced more than 2,000 paintings and authored several notable written works, earning the Women’s Caucus for Art Lifetime Achievement award in 1986. The Dalí Museum will present “Leonora Carrington: Writer, Painter, Visionary” thru 1/7/2024. Celebrated for her mystical, fantastical, and often dark work, Carrington (1917-2011) was raised in a strict household in England and expelled from two Catholic schools before attending art school where she flourished. As a young woman, she found herself surrounded by prominent surrealist figures, including André Breton and Max Ernst, her lover until his arrest in

WW2 ripped them apart and led to her mental breakdown. Fleeing France for Madrid, she was institutionalized in a Spanish asylum against her will after another breakdown but escaped by a marriage of convenience with Mexican Ambassador Renato Leduc who took her to NY. She eventually settled in Mexico, where she thrived creatively, forming connections with expat artists and marrying photographer Emerico “Chiki” Weisz. Most of her notable work was created in Mexico until her death in 2011 at 94. “Leonora Carrington did not describe herself as a Surrealist, but Surrealism informed everything she created, seen both in her occult-like magical painted figures and in her visionary writings that explore dreams and transformation,” says Curator of Education Peter Tush. Carrington’s writings include “Down Below,” the 1943 memoir of her experiences in the asylum; “The House of Fear,” a collection of fantastical short stories; and her novel “The Hearing Trumpet,” an eco-feminist fairytale.

The importance of the physical exam.

Have you ever wondered why you have to pay for an exam for your pet when going to the vet and just what the heck is it? Physical exams are the cornerstone of veterinary medicine and medicine in general. Our pets cannot communication where a problem is or where there is pain and therefore it is our job to look or examine.

There is variability as to which systems your veterinarian will start with and the order in which they are inspected, however in general a thorough exam starts at the head looking at the nose, eyes, ears mouth, teeth, and examine as far back into the oral cavity as the pet will let us. This will typically lead us to the neck where we will palpate for enlarged

lymph nodes or areas of swelling. Generally, the five major lymph node regions will be palpated checking for abnormalities.

We then turn back to the chest and will listen to the heart and lungs listening for heart murmurs and abnormal breath sounds. Then we move to the abdomen or belly and feel for any changes to the major organs, palpate for masses, and check for pain. Then we check the “undercarriage” and make sure that the patients’ male and female parts appear normal as well as the anal region. A general palpation of the skin and the extremities is then performed to complete the exam.

Generally, this doesn’t take very long, however we can detect many possible

abnormalities such as masses, heart murmurs, fluid in and/or around the lungs, fluid in the belly, enlargement of organs, congenital and hereditary abnormalities. Often, we can detect issues before the pet even shows signs that an issue is developing.

Exams can become more involved depending on whether the patient is experiencing issues. Orthopedic check for bone and joint issues and neurological exams check for issues with the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Remembering the Way Home Matters

“The

Do you recall the first time you had an epiphany or realization that you were part of something sacred, something larger than yourself; something that, when you experienced your oneness with it, it caused you to feel like you had arrived home after a long time away? For most of my young adult life, I felt emotionally lost and spiritually bankrupt; I wandered for years, exploring various diversions to find even a modicum of inner peace. Then, in 1977, I discovered the exquisite wisdom and writings of Ernest Holmes – and I knew I was home. In this issue, I want to share with you the “spiritual DNA” of this great teacher. I am pleased to have you join me on this journey home – to the place we never really left, our oneness with God, Infinite Intelligence, the Creator, the Father, or whatever name we may use to refer to It.

In the Science of the Mind, Ernest Holmes wrote: “As the prodigal returns to his father’s house, so must we return…we shall be met with a smile from the Universe.” I was reminded of this quote after listening to my friend bemoaning a few of his many problems.

I gently asked if he was maintaining his spiritual practices. His reply was, “Ummm, I have to admit, I’m not as close to God as I used to be.” I said, “Well then, who moved?” He paused, took a breath, and smiled. I then reminded him of the parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke:15 - 11-32) in which the master teacher, Jesus, illustrates the importance of remembering and returning to the source of our good, the Father (God); it’s a tale of redemption, unconditional love, non-judgement, humility, and gratitude.

I have long loved this parable because it is our story: My friend had taken a journey to the “far country” which is an idiom for a state of consciousness that woos us away from our true home – the awareness of our oneness with God. How about you? Do you ever wander into the far country?

It’s a place of forgetfulness – where illusions of separation rule supreme – where the external world seduces us into thinking that we’ll find our bliss “out there” in temporal things.

The moral of the story is, because God is Omnipresence, we only need “rise” in consciousness and return home. Some say that life is a journey. For most of us, remembering the way home is a sojourn we may have to take often. The good news is, the Beloved always awaits us with open arms.

If this insight resonates with you consider using this affirmation: Today, if I catch myself wandering in the far country, I take timeout to mindfully remember my oneness with God. I rise in consciousness and begin the journey back home.
