A 1966 speech by Senator Robert Kennedy included a reference to an ancient Chinese saying, “May you live in interesting times.” While seemingly a blessing, the expression is often used ironically; meaning life is better in less interesting times of peace than in interesting ones, which are more likely times of trouble.

Wikipedia says “May you live in interesting times” is actually an English expression less than a century old, which only purports to be a translation of a traditional Chinese curse. No evidence of such a curse exists. Nevertheless, these are interesting times.

When we begin to feel sorry for ourselves, living under house arrest, binge-watching Netflix between the sunshine state’s finest sunsets, we realize we are virtually all in one big boat together, all over the planet. A global pandemic can create a global sense of consciousness. We feel immense gratitude for those on the front lines of the virus wars and those who have been working to keep things feeling as normal as possible while the economies everywhere were sinking.

National Public Radio, for example, did an incredible job of maintaining contact with their listeners, mostly from home. This month, May 2020, will be the month recovery begins at least in some places. People will slowly return to work and to the beaches, with appropriate social distancing, and we begin to sort out what tomorrow is going to look like. This issue is not your typical Paradise News. There are no live events to tell you about, so we are substituting virtual events. There is no way to predict when Safer at Home Orders will be lifted completely. The virus will likely return with a vengeance, if we are not vigilant, so a slow phased reopening is the best approach. We do not expect to return to the “Old Normal” for quite some time, if ever, but we feel a “New Normal” can be looked forward to. We thank all of you for the kind comments you have shared with us about our April edition. We thank our advertisers, especially a couple of new ones, like Sally Wilkinson, with Luxury and Beach Realty in St. Petersburg, a couple of former advertisers returning, like All Western Mortgage, who say a temporary layoff or furlough should not keep you from refinancing at historically low rates. Our loyal advertisers who have helped us to keep sending you Paradise NEWS every issue, and our readers, who have been responding to their ads, are our heroes. Please do your part. Controlling Anxiety

THE CENTRE-ST. PETE BEACH 7525 Blind Pass Road, St. Pete Beach FL 33706 727.258.2001 | www.TheCentreSPB.com

By Michael Moses • The Centre-St. Pete Beach

During these anxious times, controlling stress and your life seems to be more challenging. Use of anti-anxiety meds in women is climbing (34% as of mid-April 2020). People have trouble sleeping. Grief over lost friends or family or just our active, free-to-roam lifestyle is very, very real. We’re in pain, and we want healthy alternatives to help get us through the day...and night. The Centre of St. Pete Beach and Triverde Health are dedicated to relieving anxiety and pain and reducing sleep issues and other conditions with medical cannabis treatments. Triverde Health has dispensaries that deliver to The Centre for curbside pickup and to homes for those with a medical marijuana card. We can also help you apply for a new card or renew your current Doctor Recommendation prior to its 7-month expiration 45 days before it expires. You must see the doctor within 7 months of the Doctor Recommendation. The card is good for 12 months: card’s date of issue. (Learn about obtaining a medical marijuana card at www.triverde.com/faqs-1) Medical Director Dr. Luis Ycaza is available for telehealth and in-person consultations in a safe, social distancing environment. “We can help you learn how to integrate CBD (pharma-quality cannabis without THC) or medical cannabis treatments (with THC) into your life for a variety of conditions, including anxiety and PTSD, and we customize a treatment that is right for you.” Thru May 8, Triverde Health is offering telehealth consult for Doctor Recommendation renewals and transfers on your smart device (phone, tablet) or computer and this virtual consultation may be extended by Florida state into May. We will be hosting wellness classes and events. For a complete list of classes and events, go to TheCentreSPB.com. Regain Control–You Decide: Medical marijuana is widely known to have anti-stress properties that can help us get ‘Control’ with micro-dosing that depends on your activity level and how you feel day to day. You are in control of what you use, based on the doctor’s recommendation. Sleep poorly, exercise too strenuously, bad news reaction stress attack? According to research, CBD has been shown to decrease anxiety best at high doses, while THC decreases anxiety at lower doses (and may increase it at higher doses). Studies show that CBD acts as an antagonist to stress hormones, affecting serotonin receptors, and are a good alternative to anti-anxiety medications. Take care of your emotional health, pain, stress and inflammation due to stress with micro-dosing. If you are new to this, you may start with medical marijuana with high CBD with low amounts of THC to see how your body processes the micro-dose. You can take it in a tincture, under your tongue or on your skin (transdermal patch or cream) one to several times a day. Everyone is different. Many of our patients find a small amount of THC enhances the effect of CBD and makes their medicine more effective and affordable for them than smoking pot. A secondary benefit? It can be a powerful immune booster. Michael Moses is the CEO of The Centre - St. Pete Beach health and wellness, also home to Triverde Health, a medical marijuana doctor recommendation group.

SBA Funding: U.S. Small Business Association (SBA) resumed accepting Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) applications from participating lenders for a 2nd round on 4/27/2020. The Paycheck Protection Program provides incentive for small businesses to keep their workers on the payroll. SBA will forgive loans if all employees are kept on the payroll for eight weeks and the money is used for payroll, rent, mortgage interest or utilities. Contact your local lender or SBA’s Customer Service Center (800) 659-2955. Bionic Fur-Babies: In late April, Florida Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA) began delivering over 375 therapeutic robotic pets to socially isolated seniors and adults living with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementia (ADRD). The interactive pets help combat social

isolation and depression among older individuals and people living with ADRD by improving overall mood and quality of life. Family caregivers may experience a reduction in stress, and caregivers benefit when companion pets allow increased engagement with the older adult and their environment. Kudos Publix: As of 4/22, Publix is buying fresh produce and milk to assist farmers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and donating them to Feeding America member food banks. The initiative will support Florida produce farmers, southeastern dairy farmers and the growing number of families looking to Feeding America for fresh fruits, vegetables and milk during the coronavirus pandemic. Small Biz Help: To provide relief to small businesses impacted by local COVID-19 orders, the City of St. Petersburg has committed $6.8 million to the Fighting Chance Fund emergency grant for St. Pete’s negatively impacted locally owned and independently operated small businesses. www.stpete.org/assis tance/fighting_chance_fund.php

Grow Smarter aims to reduce gaps by race and place in St. Petersburg by introducing equity to economic development efforts. The COVID-19 pandemic has made this vision more relevant than ever. A group formed, Hope for Tampa Bay, with friends Kelly Thompson and Hope Griffin. They found patterns and set to work. In no time, the women had created a website encouraging others to join the effort. Thonen extended a membership invitation to her Technical Theatre group—costuming students who work for additional credit—and three students took her up on the offer. The class

SPC Fall 2020: St. Petersburg College has added two new certificate programs that will kick off this fall term. These short-term training certificates, Laboratory Specialist Advanced Technical and Event Planning Management, provide students the opportunity to earn in-demand skills. “This is really good and we have just gotten started! We have over 6,000 mask requests and over 600 in the group working together!” And in other news, St. Petersburg College (SPC) was recently awarded a grant from the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) to help develop SPC’s Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Pre-apprenticeship Program. St Petersburg College’s Health Education Center (HEC) donated more than 26,000 medical supplies to local hospitals in need. USF St. Pete: On 4/20, The University of South Florida announced a gift of $50,000 from longtime supporters Kate Tiedemann and Ellen Cotton to provide emergency financial support to students on the USF St. Petersburg campus facing hardships due to the coronavirus epidemic. The gift, made in response to the USF United Support Fund effort, will be administered through the Stay AFLOAT fund, which was created by the USF Foundation to help students with a short-term need that may prevent them from continuing their education without assistance. The COVID-19 pandemic created new challenges for many students, including lost jobs and decreased financial support. St. Pete Friends Program @ USF: An initiative led by USF St. Petersburg is connecting

college students with senior citizens to reduce social isolation and develop new bonds during the global pandemic. The program, called St. Pete Friends, offers an opportunity for community members and students to connect via phone, video chat or even traditional letters to talk about their current experiences with social distancing, hear about another person’s life and share a much-needed laugh. TAMPA BAY UPDATES Coast Guard: U.S. Representative Charlie Crist (D-St. Petersburg) has pushed the DOD to reverse a new policy that would kick children of Coast Guard servicemembers out of Department of Defense childcare, effective June 1. Congressman Crist stood with 20 bicameral, bipartisan members of Congress calling on Secretary Esper to reverse the policy to guarantee that children of Coast Guard members are given the same priority as children of members of all other armed forces. Unemployment: Congressman Crist supports Gov. DeSantis using his emergency powers to expand unemployment, but called for Congress to send 2 more rounds of stimulus checks for the people, and for the state of Florida to take action to fix its broken unemployment system and expand benefits for those in need. Prevent Oil Spills: Crist sent letters to the heads of Department of the Interior, Department of Energy, and Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, calling on them to do everything within their power to require the safe storage of oil and gas surpluses amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Reports are surfacing that due to the weak demand and large supply of oil, producers are turning to unsafe practices to store the current oversupply, heightening the risk of an environmental disaster.

Garden Gab By Nanette Wiser

Our publisher Renee is the queen of green thumbs. When my Peace Lily flopped over, she had two words for me: Bone Meal. Her first cucumbers are the stuff of dreams. And she’s not the only one gardening. We’re all getting dirty during our stay-at-home, forced work vacay. Like baking, gardening is today’s hot ticket, from raised vegetable beds to herbaceous window boxes. We caught up with some Paradise gardeners extraordinaire in between ordering seeds and birdwatching, two more trending delights best done in your backyard or urban patio. When retail reopens, make time to browse local nurseries and glorious gift shops for garden accessories, such as Laura Fage’s Patina.

Create a bird habitat in your backyard and you will see cardinals, blue jays, mockingbirds, warblers and more. Consider planting firebush, American beautyberry and Simpson shopper or hang a bird feeder, even a hummingbird feeder. You can find them or make one yourself by rolling a pinecone in peanut butter, then seeds, and hanging from a tree. Let’s not forget Mother Nature’s earnest pollinator, the humble bee. Locally, you can learn more about bees and beekeeping online (Facebook) by checking out Noble Nectar Apiaries, 3390 46th Ave N. Did you know that thanks to them, 100,000 honeybees live in the rooftop apiary at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg?

Emmanuel Roux & Bill Bilodeau – The 15th Street Agrihood in DTSP has been in business for eight years, originally organized by permaculture volunteers. While the land ownership has changed, you can order a bag of produce for $4/pound. They grow 40 different kinds of vegetables, herbs, flowers and fruit trees. Here’s what our publisher Renee told PN about Emmanuel who is both French and funny: “Figure out what you want and he will either take the ripest or the best. He asked me if I like a particular vegetable and if I did, he would pick it. The produce that you want is put in a bag and then he puts it on a scale and it’s four dollars a pound! so you can get a lot of lettuce for that 4 pounds! Tampa Bay Watch

ampa Bay Watch has been a favorite Paradise NEWS nonprofit for as long as I can remember, and they say that long-term memory is one of the last things to go. We have watched Peter Clark and his amazing, dedicated staff as they have faultlessly carried out their goals to restore Tampa Bay for more than two decades. Incorporated in 1993, Tampa Bay Watch performs habitat restoration and protection activities throughout the year, relying heavily on the efforts of community volunteers. These programs seek to build citizen awareness, concern and participation through environmental outreach.

Their latest accomplishment is truly a shining achievement: the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center in downtown St. Petersburg. Located at the brand-new St. Petersburg Pier, the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center will be the connection between Pinellas residents, visitors from all over the world and the waters that brought most of us here. It will also be the only marine environmental and educational experience in downtown St. Pete. While the New Pier is now rescheduled to open later than the original date of May 30th, due to COVID-19 precautions, we wanted to give our readers an advance peek at what to expect once it launches. Much of the following can also be found online at www.tbwdiscoverycenter.org. Once it opens, there will be numerous ways to make the most of your visit to the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center. You can go at your own pace with the help of a free, self-guided tour map. You can take a docent-led tour that lasts roughly an hour. Or you can do both and stay for hours. However, you want to structure your visit to the Discovery Center, here are a few pieces of key information that can help. The Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center is located at the new St. Pete Pier, mid-span on the over-water walkway approaching the Pier head.

What It Does The Discovery Center offers guests a unique opportunity to learn and live the story of the recovery of the Tampa Bay ecosystem. An exhibit-rich gallery of live marine habitats, hands-on interactive displays and video presentations tell the story of Tampa Bay and its recovery and the key role played by Tampa Bay Watch since 1993.

What You’ll Experience The Discovery Center includes a public Exhibit Gallery showcasing the economic and ecological value of the Tampa Bay estuary to residents and visitors. The focal point is a 1,800-gallon Estuary Habitat that replicates the living habitat of many of the species found in our local waters. The Discovery Center also features an indoor classroom as well as an outdoor “wet” classroom. Guests also engage in interactive displays, video presentations, a touch tank and docent-led tours. Before they leave, visitors will stand underneath a 10’ high wave of plastic, grasp Tampa Bay’s amazing variety of recreational opportunities, and explore ways to become better stewards of the environment.

omfort foods for most of us fall into the savory or sweet penchant. Sometimes you can get both (think kettle corn), but for most of us, it’s ice cream, gelato, gourmet ice pops, candy, fudge, cookies, cakes and pies… and my fave, mini cupcakes. In these uncertain times, you can get pick-up or delivery from these local confectionery paradises. Be sure to check ahead for hours and availability.

Frozen Delights: The Hyppo St. Petersburg’s gourmet ice pops are swoonable. We love the flavor mashups especially pistachio mint, maraschino blueberry, raspberry lemon chia, starfruit basil, Earl Grey lavender, and sangria pineapple. Downtown’s Paciugo Gelato serves up traditional gelato and sorbetti exquisitely flavored. Best of show are the banana cream pie, coconut, Amarena black cherry swirl, coffee mocha swirl, and Texas pecan sea salt caramel. URBAN Creamery’s homemade ice cream, dessert waffles, sundaes and milkshakes soothe the savage beach. Rita’s Mango Misto and Steak N Shake’s Strawberry Banana milkshake quench all anxiety. The Amish Creamery Company, Sugar Daddy’s Ice Cream and Kilwin’s ice cream beats Dairy Queen soft serve,

but a Blizzard is always in style! Uptown Sno-Balls is one my new favorites, as is Paradise Sweets’ shaved ice and waffle cones. Larry’s Ice Cream and Gelato in St. Pete Beach is a legendary favorite for kids of all ages! Candy Is Dandy: You can’t go wrong with the old-fashioned retro delights at The Candy Kitchen in Redington and Madeira, as well as the fudge and bags of licorice or gummy bears. For sophisticated sweeties, Kilwin’s candy counter is alluring. Local Toffee To Go and William Dean Chocolates can be ordered online. William Dean artisan confections have been featured on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and The Hunger Games. Boca Ciega Millenium Park, Seminole: Birds-eye views from the meandering trails and tower, and spectacular nature photo opps. Walsingham Park, Largo: The dog park is open and the walk around the lake is amazing, perfect for biking and walking (no skating or skateboard), stretching from 102nd to Walsingham. Redington Shores: Behind SeaBreeze and across from the Redington Towers is a neat little park on the intracoastal, and you can walk behind the now-closed Wells Fargo Bank into a sweet beachy neighborhood. Redington Beach: Near City Hall is a sweet little waterfront park and butterfly garden in Friendship Park planted by the Garden Club in 2016. Photo by Deb Carson

Madeira Beach: We found a couple places to stroll, including City Hall past the library, ROC Park and Rec Center for a great bay view and across the Tom Stuart Causeway. Bring a book and a chair.

Park It, Babe! By Nanette Wiser

Beaches and parks are open with social distancing precautions (wear mask; decreased capacity). Walk it off in Paradise, friends. Beaches may still be closed and some parks, but Paradise NEWS discovered dozens of hidden neighborhood hideaways and county/city parks you can enjoy. We were surprised to find the boardwalk in Clearwater Beach off limits, but found many Gulf view spots to linger and lunch. Playgrounds and parcours equipment are off limits for now, but add these jewels to your weekly wanderlust explorations. Florida Botanical Gardens: So much to see, from blooming flowers to cacti (see our garden story this month) and we glimpsed spoonbills, water lilies and yes, a sunning alligator eyeing a turtle for lunch. Pinellas Trail: Open for biking and walking, from Dunedin to Downtown St. Pete. Indian Rocks Beach: Behind Villa Gallace, Aqua Prime and JD’s is a funky little boardwalk on the intracoastal where we discovered “Turkey Legs,” the photo shot by Deb Carson (and hand-colored), sneaky snook, egrets and free docks for boaters at Keegan Park. We walked the boardwalk behind Jimmy Guana’s and if were not a sultry humid day, might have tackled the Indian Rocks Bridge on Walsingham. McGough Nature Park, Largo: Bald eagle, Harry Potter owls and hawks shelter in beautiful enclosures and the turtle pond is chock full of all species of turtles doing what they do best in spring! The alligator turtle is particularly menacing but we get a kick out of the snout on the softshell. You can walk to the intracoastal for a bird’s eye view, and maybe see a rabbit or three. 18

Treasure Island: Walk from the R Bar over the bridge to Paradise Island or on the long sidewalk in Sunset Beach. We also like Isle of Capri’s John Morroni Memorial Dog Park with fenced-in areas for large and small dogs, watering stations, double-gated security entrances, benches, large shady Live Oaks, grassland and free parking. Roselli Park on Capri Circle South and 2nd Street East, Isle of Capri, offers large shady oaks surrounding the playground and the Bill Lyons Little League Ball Field. There are free tennis courts, shuffleboard courts, a horseshoe pit, a basketball hoop, picnic tables, open green space and trail-like sidewalk. The Treasure Island Community Center Park (1 Park Place & 106th) is connected to the downtown business district with landscaped sidewalks and is home for many outdoor events with a fitness course, open green space, Veteran’s Memorial and the Causeway Bridge Historical Monument. (Remember, many of the recreation options are not open at this time.) St. Pete Beach: So many walkable places, from Blind Pass’s McKinney Park and Colonel Michael J. Horan Park to the St. Pete Rec Center and Upham Beach sidewalk for fab views of the Gulf and Bay. Sunset views are spectacular. In Pass-A-Grille, the sidewalk on the intracoastal is great for fishing and strolling. Walk down the street to the Gulf sidewalk for a little peace of mind. Gulfport: From the Senior Center to O’Maddy’s, the boardwalk and pier bay views are sensational and perfect for a cuppa java in the morning. St. Petersburg: Sacred Gardens is sometimes open on Park St. and the waterfront walk from The Dali along the Pier and MFA and Vinoy offers unlimited water vistas. For information on City Parks, check www.stpete.org/parks_and_recreation/index.php.

Grape Adventure By Nanette Wiser Sea Salt sommelier Jaqueline Eash knows a thing or two about elegant quaffs. She’s in demand, from Naples Wine Auction to an upcoming event in Oregon this summer. Hoping happy hour at Sea Salt St. Pete picks up later this spring so we can dabble in her suggestions. Here is what she recommends as the season warms and blooms: 1) Bubbles, of course. I like Cava in place of Champagne. Cava is a much more approachable price point if you like to drink sparkling wine as an everyday wine. Not to mention it’s delicious. TRY: Kila, Cava, Brut, or Pere Ventura, Rose 2) Sauvignon Blanc. France, New Zealand, California, or beyond. This is such a versatile grape that drinks beautifully in the summer swealter. Pair it up with a crisp cool salad with a zingy vinaigrette or a lively Ceviche. TRY: Alphonse Mellot, La Moussiere, Sancerre, or Lail, Sauvignon Blanc 3) Portuguese Vihno Verde/Green Wine. This is one of my favorite Florida Patio Pounders. It’s crisp, light, slightly effervescent, lower in alcohol, about 10-11%, & super affordable. Chill it up & drink it down. Fair warning, it goes down way too easy so, buy at least 3 bottles if you want to share with a friend. TRY: Casal Garcia, or Gazela

Governor Opening Florida in Steps As Paradise News went to press, Gov. Ron DeSantis on April 30 issued Executive Orders #111 and #112 after brief remarks about re-opening the state Monday, May 4, “safely, smartly and step-by-step.” Order #111 retains all current restrictions on Vacation Rentals in all communities. Order #112 states “No bar seating with establishments serving food; 25% of allowable indoor space AND outdoor dining groups of 10 or less 6 feet apart. RETAIL establishments can reopen with 25% of allowable occupancy at any one time.” The Governor emphasized, “Fear is our enemy, and we can persevere working together!”

As the Covid-19 pandemic continues its course, there are some bright spots for the Gulf Beach communities to downtown St. Pete and Pinellas County. The state of Florida and Pinellas County have both formed “Look Ahead” panels including scientists, health officials, educators and key politicians to frame some excellent guidelines for all size and type of businesses; at least one new eatery is opening and a number of local restaurants have been offering carryout with curbside pick-up and/or delivery; the St. Pete Beach Library restoration project was approved by the Commission and staff is working with movers to relocate to temporary quarters nearby; both Visit St. Pete/Clearwater and VISIT Florida are gearing up with post-pandemic campaigns to revive tourism.

Robin Miller, CEO and president of the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce, has done an excellent job of keeping members and the community up to date on state and local progress toward reopening for business. She told Paradise News, “We have attended several informative ‘Phase REOPEN’ calls. Please see this link: www.whitehouse.gov/wpcontent/uploads/2020/04/Guidelines-for-Opening-Up-AmericaAgain.pdf from the White House and the CDC, via the US Chamber of Commerce. It is easy to read and provides good information. “Key point is that all businesses should continue to REIMAGINE operations while we wait for the ‘GO’ to re-open: 1. Is your business cleaned and ready for a phased opening? 2. Have you reviewed your services, your products or your customer interaction strategies? 3. If you have dining rooms or gathering areas; have you considered a different layout for social distancing? “I also sat in on the recently formed State of Florida Re-Open Task Force call on April 21. There is an impressive group representing all sectors to begin the very important and vital work to execute a proper phase in to restarting our FL economy. “If you or your business have any ideas or suggestions, you can email them to me at robin@tampabaybeaches.com and I will put a list together to gain support.” On April 24, she reported, “The TBBCoC REOPEN task force recently met; developed some suggestions and sent them to the state and the county. Library Looking Forward! On April 14, the St. Pete Beach city commissioners gave approval to move forward on a long-awaited library renovation project with a $2,121,771 guaranteed maximum price proposal with Hennessey Construction Services. The St. Pete-based firm celebrates its 100th year Centennial in 2020, with long-time employee Mark Stalker buying the firm in 2017, keeping it locally owned. He said, “Our culture and our people make our company successful. We have a legacy of providing the 22

best in class customer services to clients and our talented staff makes this customer-first philosophy a reality.” Library Administrator Betcinda Kettells told Paradise News, “The next step in the process is to move the library into a temporary space while we renovate the 50-year-old building at 365 73rd Ave. The temporary library will be located at 7470 Gulf Blvd., just two blocks away from our current location and adjacent to the popular P.J.’s Oyster Bar. The temporary site will house all your favorite materials including large and regular print books, audio books in a variety of formats, music, DVDs, newspapers, and magazines. Of course, that’s not all your library provides. We’ll have computers, printers, copiers, museum passes, ukuleles, puzzles, honor books, and the ever-popular Friends of the Library bookstore selections for purchase at unbelievably low prices. We’re excited about the new digs and look forward to seeing you again. “Looking further down the road, you will be welcomed back to our renovated building and see a grand transformation. Here’s a partial list of what will be refurbished: roof, ceiling, lighting, shelving, furniture, and carpet. Our intent is to return this mid-century modern gem back to its original glory and evoke the feel of the time with furniture, colors, and font styles that exemplify the 1950’s and early 60’s. The building has achieved historic status and we want to honor that past as we move forward. We hope to welcome you to a grand-reopening party by the end of the year. “In the meantime, please know that your library offers many services digitally, including eBooks, audiobooks, comic books, music, movies, educational materials and more! Visit our webpage www.SPBLibrary.com for the latest information on the move, all our digital services and the re-opening!”

Fo’Cheezy food truck in front of new restaurant

Local Restaurants Coping

Fo’Cheezy partners Craig Munroe and chef Robert Hesse met about 20 years ago and kept in touch, Craig told Paradise News. “He came to me about eight months ago with the concept for ‘Meltz’ (see April cover feature) that sounded good to me. I ended my A Slice of New York pizza operation and we started with the psychedelic food truck. After 17 booked events were canceled just before our planned debut in March, we were lucky that Mastry’s was excited about having the truck in front of

their St. Pete Beach brewery, now open Fridays & Saturdays. We had bought the former Fetishes building at 6305 Gulf Blvd. in St. Pete Beach and are busy converting it for a planned mid-May opening. It will seat about 50 with counter ordering and delivery to the table. Initially it will be for curbside pickup and delivery to SPB, Treasure Island, South Pasadena and Gulfport. Menu will be available at www.focheezy.com/menu with a call to order at 727-498-3205. After the restaurant opens, the Food Truck will continue operating under manager Matt Crowley, whose family owned Crowley’s Irish Pub in downtown St. Pete for many years. Ryan Broder, owner and butcher of the Bayway Country Store & Butcher Shop on the Pinellas Bayway at 5401 Leeland St. S, St. Petersburg, near Point Brittany, said, “Thanks to the support of Paradise News and local community we are proud to still offer a fully stocked service meat and seafood case. Included is our featured $41.99 Fresh Pack for two that includes two 5-6 oz. Bacon-Wrapped Filet Mignon, 1 lb. Extra Lean Ground Beef, two Center Cut Boneless Pork Chops, two Pork or Chicken Dijon, 1 lb. Bacon or Sausage, two Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts, two Chicken Cordon Bleu or Other Chicken Rolls. See the menu online at www.baywaycountrystore.net, with a call for orders to 727-867-7507. Middle Grounds Grill opened in August 2005 at 10925 Gulf Blvd. on Treasure Island. Owner Dan Coover noted for Paradise News “it’s the second landmark restaurant at that site for our family, which operated Robby’s Pancake House there from 1973. After closing down for a week in March, now we’re open Thursday-Sunday with a limited menu for curbside pick-up between 4 and 8pm. Our original menu did not lend itself to take-out but we came up with an appetizing selection. We offer delivery south to the Don Cesar in St. Pete Beach, and South Pasadena; north to the end of Madeira Beach; and to the Tyrone Blvd. area. Menu is on Facebook at www.facebook.com/middlegroundsgrill, with a call for curbside pickup and/or delivery to 727-360-4253. Chill Restaurant & Bar at 357 Corey Ave. in St. Pete Beach since early March has two curbside pick-up menus on its Facebook page, manager Matthew LaLumiere reports. Sunday Funday menu from 10am to 5pm offers brunch favorites including omelets and sandwiches … From 4 to 9pm Mondays, a Prime Rib special is featured, and Thursday-Saturday the new menu includes meatloaf, other Chill favorites, tacos, fajitas, soup, salads, wings and burgers as highlights. A beautiful new Mermaid Mural was added on the patio. Call ahead to order at 727-360-2445 with Menu available online at www.facebook.com/chillrestaurant. Bayou Catering opened in 2009 and the Market opened last September at 6630 Central Ave. in St. Pete, according to owner David Bilyeu. “We are going to take a year to keep the Market going as we figure out what will work best. Now we offer cafeteria-style meals and prepared frozen foods to go, with on-site party platters available. Our original catering operation had been doing well over the years with a lot of corporate business in the tri-county area – Pinellas, Hillsborough and Manatee. We feel it will snap back faster than the newer retail side. We lost a lot of graduation parties, and it’s the height of our crawfish season with canceled festivals. We’re doing takeout with curbside pickup from the Market from 4 to 7 pm, Monday through Friday, with hot items and others for the cooler or freezer. Menu available at www.thebayoumarket.com/menu with a call to order to 727-914-7500 or 727-644-7805.” Marquise Café opened at 2525 Pasadena Ave. S in South Pasadena in November and was off to a good start with its French menu of crepes

and other specialties, owners Phillippe Florimond and Gwenola De Bouard De Lafore told Paradise News. “Since early March it’s been very tough and we’re asking customers to buy gift cards of any price to help keep us going. We are open with a limited menu for curbside pickup, Tuesday through Sunday from 8am to 2pm, with the menu online at www.marquisecafe.com with order calls to 727-367-2233 or 1-904-760-9772.” Sesto Ramadori opened Da Sesto Italiano at 7201 66th St. N in Pinellas Park in February 2017 after owning Florida Pasta Co. for 10 years and several Montreal restaurants before that. He told Paradise News “We’ve been able to keep on about 12 of our 25 employees for take-out business with curbside pickup Tuesday through Sunday from 3 to 8pm. They all agreed to a partner system and share 5% of all sales, off about 75% since the shutdown began, and all tips. One big help has been our ‘Pay It Forward’ fund with many customers getting a 30% discount for their donation orders. As an example, we fed 230 meals to the Pinellas Park Sunstar EMS on April 12. Our full menu is available plus a limited grocery list, cocktails and a retail wine list. Menu is on the website at www.DaSesto.com with a call to 727-209-2695 for orders.” Joy Xayavong opened Nori Thai about eight years ago at 7612 Blind Pass R. in St. Pete Beach and added Basil Leaf Thai Sushi Bar at 6395 Gulf Blvd. SPB about two years ago, she told Paradise News. Nori Thai is open Monday to Friday 11:30am to 2:30pm, and all 7 days from 4:30 to 10pm. Menu features a variety of homemade Thai dishes, authentic Japanese specialties and some of the freshest sushi on the Gulf Beaches. See the full menu online at www.norithai.com, call to order at 727-367-6535. Basil Leaf is open from 2-10 pm 7 days a week. Menu includes appetizers, sushi, special rolls, lunch specials, and dinners, plus a kids’ menu. Full menu online at www.basilthaisushibar.com with a takeout call to 727-360-4000. Joy said, “We’ve been able to keep on most of our staff at both sites, and business has been OK since the shift around March 15. We’re hanging in there till this is over!” The original Pipo’s Cuban Cuisine was opened in Tampa in 1979 by Ramon Hernandez Sr., his son Ramon told Paradise News. He said, “The first Pinellas location opened in 2009 to currently now three locations with only 9531 Bay Pines Blvd. open now for drive-thru pickup Monday-Saturday from 9am-9pm and Sunday from 9am-8pm. Menu is available online at www.pipos1979.com, with orders called in to 727-394-7476. Once we can, we hope to reopen our Pipo’s To Go North at 84th St. North, and Pipo’s To Go South at 642 22nd Street South in the historic Manhattan Casino building along with our Callaloo restaurant and larger group party room upstairs. Our business is down about 70% since the pandemic hit. but we had a carryout business with a loyal local clientele in place to sustain some business. We’ve been able to keep our three main managers on part-time and just like everyone else, are looking forward to getting back soon to ‘near normal’.” Everyone at Paradise News hopes this look ahead will provide a lot of good information as we all expect to see a lot more light at the end of this tunnel!

HEALTH & WELLNESS

WOMEN’S WELLNESS Your Brain on Menopause By d’Alene Fallon

Brain fog isn’t pretty.

Did you know that 60% of women going through menopause and perimenopause report suffering from this catch-all moniker which describes the forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, fuzzy thinking, and fatigue or lack of motivation that makes our 40s and 50s so much fun? It really is a thing, according to a 2016 research study from the University of Illinois College of Medicine and Stanford University. Haywire hormones are partially to blame; specifically, dropping estrogen levels, as estrogen is the hormone tied to the area of the brain which processes memory, the hippocampus. But before you rush out to get HRT, consider this: that same study showed that hormone replacement therapy did not have a significant effect on brain activity in that sector; though over time, most women do naturally regain their memory function. That’s encouraging, but if just waiting for it all to end is not a viable course of action, how can we protect our brains from the less-desirable effects of shifting hormones in middle age? The answer may lie in the simplest prescription of all: get active. A surprising finding in the study was that active women in menopause and perimenopause showed the same levels of brain activity as their pre-menopausal peers. And while no one knows for sure why that is – it could be that consistent 26

MAY 2020 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

physical activity makes the brain resistant to certain hormone fluctuations, or perhaps exercise facilitates the brain’s recruitment of estrogen from other sources, such as stored fat or converting testosterone in the body – either way, it is good reason to get and stay active. The extra physical activity also leads to a significant decrease in the severity and frequency of vasomotor symptoms – moderate strength training can relieve hot flashes by 43% with just three 30-minute sessions per week, and yoga has a similar result. So if you are plagued by hot flashes and night sweats like 80% of women in perimenopause and menopause, getting active could be your surest path to relief. We already know that exercise will work wonders on our mood, weight, and general well-being. Now we have real evidence that we can protect our brains and even reverse some damage as menopause sets in. For more information, visit MakeMenopauseCool.com. And while you’re creating your health and wellness plan, why not boost your immunity by eating more fruits and vegetables. Studies have shown that eating five or more servings per day can increase the protective antibody response to pathogens by up to 82%! All fruits and veggies count, but there are some superstars among the pack such as broccoli, kale, berries, nutritional yeast and mushrooms.

Keep your gut healthy with probiotics – research shows that people who take a probiotic supplement have significantly fewer colds, take fewer sick days, and have fewer upper-respiratory infections than those who don’t. You can keep your gut happy without a probiotic supplement by incorporating plenty of fiber in the form of raw fruits and vegetables. Extra credit if you do both. Mobilize the troops! Your immune system has a special-ops team of about 2 billion natural killer cells on a mission to seek out and destroy infected or cancerous cells; you can double their ranks at any time simply by eating a cup and a half of blueberries. What’s more, cardamom seems to inspire these cells to kill even more infection, so sprinkle it on liberally. Wash your hands and stay away from animal products, especially poultry and meat, to avoid some of the most common and deadly bacteria as well as raw fish (sushi, poke). As always, the best offense is a good defense. And making these simple changes – exercising more often and eating more fruits and vegetables as part of a whole-food plant-based diet – can work wonders in boosting your immune system to help you fight off infections like the cold and flu, as well as more aggressive strains like what we’re seeing now. Those viruses won’t have a chance.

FITNESS

Mobility, Flexibility, Balance, and Symmetry By Frank Adornato

When we’re young we have a lot of energy; our bodies are strong and flexible. But as we age, as early as our 40’s, our bodies start to change. It’s not noticeable at first but with time our joints, ligaments, and tendons become more rigid and we feel “stiff”. We may favor a sore joint and lean on one leg or use one arm more than the other, and this leads to a loss of balance and body symmetry. We start to lose muscle mass and bone density which affects our overall strength. As a result of these changes, we become less active and we start to fall down the rabbit hole towards “old age.” Sounds scary I know, but don’t despair! There are things you can do to postpone, reduce and even counteract these changes and live an active, healthier longer life.

MAY 2020 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

To start, stretch daily. We often see athletes stretching before and after a workout, but stretching is not just for competitive athletes. Stretching is vital to everyone’s good health. Stretching promotes blood circulation and brain activity, decreases body aches and pains, and increases your energy level. Start each day with stretches and easy movements. Regardless of how much athletic activity you do during the day, a morning stretch will help you wake up and feel better. If morning stretching doesn’t appeal to you, choose whatever time of day works for you, and keep at it daily.

Strength training, i.e, using weights, stretch cords, or other forms of resistance offers many health and fitness benefits. In addition to strengthening muscles and bones, it helps you lose weight and keep the weight off. It also promotes better body biomechanics, symmetry and balance, all of which help prevent injury. It’s ideal to include strength training three times a week in your routine, with a rest day between.

A sub-set of strength training is to build a strong core. Your core muscles are those from your neck to your pelvis. A strong core will help prevent lower back pain, improve your posture and balance. Work your core three to five days a week.

Cardio exercise is any exercise that increases your heart rate for a prolonged period of time. Common examples are running, walking, cycling, swimming, kick boxing, aerobic classes, etc. Doing cardio for 30 minutes or more five times a week will strengthen your heart, increase your lung capacity, burn calories, and reduce your risk for heart disease.

Eating well is the foundation to good health. It’s not just how much you eat, but the quality of the food you eat that is important. Keep portions small, about the size of your fist. Eat slowly since it takes a little while for your brain to signal that you’re full. If you eat too fast you’ll eat more than you need or want. Consume foods that are moderate in complex carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats, and low in sugar.

HANGING AROUND By Caron Schwartz Hanging out in the time of COVID-19 (apologies to Gabriel Garcia Márquez). Sheltering in place means a whole lot of hanging in. In both senses of the words: staying inside and remaining upbeat. In times BC (before coronavirus), I’d often “compete” in my personal triathlon: bike ride, coffee shop, bike ride. I’d cycle the Pinellas Trail into downtown St. Pete, put my feet up at any number of fine establishments, enjoy a leisurely coffee break, and head home. But in these trying times, it’s take-out only. Where is the fun in that? The mystique of cafe life is the “life.” The beverage is essential, but it’s not the point. So one day I fired up the Nespresso, filled an insulated travel mug, and hit the trail. Instead of the Pinellas Trail, I turned south onto the Skyway Trail. Rolling along the mangrove-lined boardwalk through Clam Bayou Nature Preserve it’s easy to forget you’re less than a mile from I-275. Popping out onto the wide path adjacent to 34th Street South I passed a blazingly blossomed jatropha and paused to catch my breath. I continued to 54th Ave South without seeing anywhere to put my feet up. Remembering benches around Clam Bayou, I banged a U-y, pedal to the metal. When I found my bench, I was no longer alone; other cyclists had the same idea. My compatriot and I sat safely apart at opposite ends of the bench, each in our own gazing-at-the-water moment. Peace and coffee – a day as complete as it could be under the circumstances.

ENCOURAGING WORDS

By Dennis Merritt Jones

Knowing the difference between a problem and an inconvenience makes every day of life a more meaningful experience. Remembering how blessed we are by our “inconveniences” seems to be a lesson that most of us, including me, need to be reminded of on a regular basis. Speaking of the ongoing detours life puts in front of us, this past weekend while returning from a speaking engagement in Las Vegas and eager to get home, Diane and I became stuck in a major freeway traffic jam —cars were backed up and at a standstill for miles. At the time I saw it more as a problem than an inconvenience because I had consumed several cups of coffee, a coke, and a bottle of water and was particularly in need of a restroom. Eventually every car was sloooowly directed off the freeway and detoured through a number of side streets. As it turned out, the cause of the backup and detour was a brushfire along the freeway. It was only then that we learned there had just been a flash flood in the high desert area we had passed through which severely damaged a number of homes and automobiles. Diane was quick to remind me (and rightfully so) that given all that had transpired that day, I did not really have a problem; I was merely being inconvenienced and she was correct.

Friends, The Covid19 virus is giving us a no-choice opportunity to put our “normal” daily affairs on pause and redefine what our priorities are. While practicing social distancing has become a national pastime for most of us, I thought it would be appropriate to remind us Everything is relative to our current experience and our perspective of it. what the difference is between an inconvenience and a true problem. The differences between our problems and our inconveniences become While I wrote this article a few years back I even more obvious when we consider the think it is highly relevant to what is happening One of life’s best coping mechanisms is incomprehensible pain and suffering of the men, now. On the corner of 4th Street and 48th Avenue North, the Florida Wild Animal & Reptile Ranch offered it all. Opened in 1938, the Ranch became one of Florida’s treasured Roadside Attractions. It joined Turner’s Sunken Gardens, as well as nearly 100 mom-and-pop motels on 4th Street — then the main thoroughfare that carried motorists from Gandy Bridge to the Bee Line Ferry and on to Bradenton. In 1958, Mayor John D. Burroughs pitched the idea to City Council of purchasing the Ranch and turning it into a children’s playland. Council instead urged the Mayor to acquire the land south of Lake Maggiore — now Boyd Hill Nature Trail. The family-owned Florida Wild Animal & Reptile Ranch closed in 1960. PROPERTY LAW

Travels through Property Law by Tom Brodersen, Esq.

WILD RIDE! It is perhaps a huge understatement to suggest that Florida businesses and property owners have seen their share of excitement in recent decades, but flexible, determined entrepreneurs have always found a way through it all.

hasn’t worked out too well yet, but that may change. In my mind, the key to dealing with abrupt, convulsive change is focusing on the basics of your business. That includes a strong understanding of your own niche in the marketplace, the value you offer to the public, and always building on your core competencies as a business person, whether it be technical knowledge, salesmanship, or customer service. People skills always count, as every business is in the people business.

Remember the early ‘80s when the interest rates skyrocketed? In a misguided effort to fight inflation, the Federal Reserve drove up rates to the point where the typical home mortgage was as high as 18-1/2%. Bank loans were out of the question for most people, but sellers figured out that they could make nearly as much money off holding their buyers’ mortgages as they made on the properties themselves. That flexible thinking saved a lot of people’s bacon, at least long enough for the mortgage market to come back to its senses. Then in 2008 housing markets were roiled by massive numbers of foreclosures. Borrowers soon learned that the banks completely lost control of their loan inventory and foreclosed on many people who never actually defaulted on their payments. Many Floridians engaged lawyers and stood up to the banks. Some gained enough leverage to re-negotiate their loans, while others were paralyzed by fear and ended up losing their homes. In the intervening years, of course, we’ve had

all kinds of storms, hurricanes and wars, along with business and economic woes. The common thread is that luck favors the prepared mind, and planning and thoughtfulness allow a person to react quickly to change. Now America is going through a biological trial that is threatening not only our health and our families, but also our basic financial stability. Governments are struggling to give relief to businesses, which

Also valuable is effective planning (including thoughtful estate and business succession planning) and having strong resources. A critical resource for many businesses (and property owners) includes capable professional assistance, be it accounting, tax or legal advice. Having (and using) your trusted advisers helps you to resist fear, overcome paralysis, and forge a bold path forward. ________________

CONSTRUCTION

By Tom Smith

60 Years of Construction Change…. How many of us remember Grocho Marx, a new $3,000 car, the hula hoop, 27-cent a gallon gas? Well, those were the years when most of the housing stock along the Pinellas Beaches was constructed. Much has changed over that 6 decade period, especially when it relates to home construction. First take home size and specs. In the 1950’s & 1960’s, the average home size in Florida was about 1,200sf, a 2-bedroom, 1-bath layout with just a refrigerator and range. Then home sizes increased, adding more bedrooms and bathrooms, adding the dishwasher & microwave, a 2-car garage instead of a single carport, higher ceilings, etc. This throwback thought brings you back to “Memory Lane” and what the first big wave of homebuyers choose when they followed Jackie Gleason’s lead to come to beautiful Florida to live and retire. Over the past 60 years when the present home stock was constructed, home sizes, styles and amenities, as well as much needed structural code changes, have evolved for the better. Much of this was “market driven” due to the demands and larger budgets of the homebuyers, and some driven by code changes instituted by insurance companies and government officials seeing the need to better preserve our housing stock from strong storms, rising waters and hurricanes. That brings about the question, should homeowners tear down their existing 60-year-old

home and consider replacing it with a new home? I thought I’d take this opportunity to outline a few of the many considerations that make a newly constructed home desirable today. Investment Potential: • Newly constructed homes sell for a much higher premium than 60-year-old homes. Generally, a Florida replacement home is an “investment” not a cash expenditure; • Considerably less annual flood insurance premiums, with additional 15% annual increases predicted each coming year; • Energy efficiency: Higher SEER A/C systems, Energy Star appliances and doors & windows. Structural Components, Safety & Peace of Mind: • FEMA requirements. Elevated homes are superior, safer, and offer “Peace of Mind” as storms approach each hurricane season; • Piling Foundation Systems for added structural strength; • Major structural components are vastly improved for construction industry. Amenities & Building Materials: • Today’s most requested amenity… Elevators! Sure we all want exercise, but ease of carrying the groceries upstairs and having proper home

access for our aging parents is a very important consideration today; • Windows & Doors: All now required to withstand a 150mph storm! Exciting 21st Century Amenities: • Beautiful exterior home designs that enhance your investment; • New cabinetry and granite countertops for kitchens and baths; • Flooring options such as porcelain and ceramic tile; • Updated kitchen appliances, light fixtures, and interior design treatments. Like our vehicles which we change periodically over the years, we all basically want the newest, best products with the most sex appeal. That’s human nature. Maybe considering a replacement home would give you a good investment, a new exciting living environment, and Peace of Mind for the next decades to come! Ant Lions – Who Knew? When a quantity of perfectly round conical depressions appeared around the foundation of our 50’s beach bungalow I was ready to call an exterminator, but in an unusually lucid moment I decided first to google “conical-shaped holes in sandy yard”. I quickly learned not to call the exterminator. Ant Lions are super-beneficial bugs that control ants naturally. Ant Lions, also known as doodle bugs in the US because they make markings like a distracted artist, are a group of insects in the Order Neuroptera – translated as “nerve wings.” They are part of the Family Myrmeleontidae, which is of Greek origin myrmex (ant) and leon (lion). You know you have Ant Lions when you see these upside-down cones in the dirt or sand. These are actually traps that the (predatory) larvae set so that they can eat the ants, and other bugs or spiders, when they fall in. The larva looks like something you would see in Star Trek The Wrath of Khan or The Mummy movies. It grows to approximately an inch long and is head bears a very impressive and sizeable pair of sickle-like jaws (mandible) that have numerous sharp, hollow projections. In fact, their mandible is so large that it makes walking difficult and so they will typically walk backwards. They seize their prey by injecting poison that paralyzes it. Additional digestive enzymes are injected to break down internal tissue of its prey. It then sucks the liquefied contents of its prey’s body and then flicks it out of the pit. The larva then repairs the pit and waits for its next victim. Ant Lion larvae eventually pupate in the soil. As scary as their adolescent stage appears, the adult resembles a dragonfly or damselfly except the Ant Lion folds its wings back in a tent-like fashion. They also have longer, prominent, clubbed antennae and different type of wing venation. Adults are rarely encountered in the wild as they are nocturnal. They feed on nectar and pollen. Ant Lions are often included in lists of beneficial insects, no doubt because they prey upon ants, a common pest to humans. ParadiseNewsFL.com | MAY 2020

Releasing tension

Adieu Farewell Yellow Brick Road Elton John is postponing the remainder of the North American 2020 dates on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour from May 22 through July 8. Previously postponed performances were from March 26 through May 2. This tough decision was made with the continued safety and well-being of his fans at a time when health services are under increased pressure and with the concern that these gatherings continue to risk accelerating the spread of the coronavirus. Ticketholders of all 2020 postponed performances

COCKTAILS TO GO We asked our Paradise readers where they are picking up to-go libations. Linda Bray recommended Old Key West, Nitaly’s and Beans & Barlour. Billy’s Stone Crab, Seafood and Lobster Restaurant offers a $1.99 margarita to go. Ester Venouziou recommended Da Sesto Italiano’s Ristorante e Vino’s Quarantini (ask about their other cocktails, curbside pick-up and delivery up to 20 miles) and Dr. BBQ The Restaurant. Our unofficial downtown mayor Brenda suggested Flute & Dram, Annatas, Tryst and Bella Bravo. Louie Spetrini told us Nueva Cantina is serving its 32oz (pitcher size) house margaritas made to order for $15. They also have 11 beers and wines to go and a Margarita kit that includes a bottle of tequila, house made sour mix, Triple Sec, limes and salt for $30. (While supplies last. Remember not to drink and drive!)

Home Entertaining: Tiki Cocktails for Two By Nanette Wiser From DTSP’s Saigon Blonde to Gulf Beaches’ Salty Tiki Bar and hotel tiki lounges, tiki drinks equal kick-back and party time. These island-centric cocktails can be made at home, and some local restaurants are offering drinks to go that can be dressed up in festive tiki cups and festooned with colorful umbrellas and swizzle sticks at home. Hollywood created tiki drinks which pioneers like Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic invented in the 1930s. With a resurgence in the fifties, funky ceramic mugs (pineapple shape, totems) still dominate collectible crazy fans, searching online or in local shops like Art Pool and Za-Zood. Today, modern tiki is more than just rum. The classic Mai Tai can be all Grand Marnier, rather than rum. You can be sophisticated and carve an animal out of a piece of fruit, or just fan out a slice of pineapple and hibiscus flower in a colorful straw. So, why not make tonight’s cocktail hour Tiki Talk? Watch the sun go down from your patio or backyard, Zoom with friends with a little Don Ho music, then watch South Pacific for a perfect at home date night with a classic Mai Tai or Zombie. 48

THE ZOMBIE

We like can be made with papaya juice and a little dash of these delights: for tart, sour mix or fresh lime juice; for sweet-tart, for orange juice; for sweet orange, Triple Sec; for rich and sweet, cherry or almond liqueur. 1 ounce white rum 1 ounce golden rum 1 ounce dark rum 1 ounce apricot brandy 1 ounce pineapple juice 1 ounce papaya juice ½ ounce 151-proof rum Dash of grenadine Instructions Shake all the ingredients except for the 151-proof rum together in a shaker. Pour the mixture into a glass filled with ice. Pour the 151-proof rum on the top of the drink. Garnish with a cherry, a slice of pineapple, an orange slice or kiwi.

MAI TAI

1 jigger spiced rum ½ jigger coconut-flavored rum 1 teaspoon grenadine syrup 2 fluid ounces orange juice 3 fluid ounces pineapple juice Instructions: In a cocktail mixer full of ice, combine the spiced rum, coconut rum, grenadine, pineapple juice and orange juice. Shake vigorously and strain into glass full of ice.

BLUE HAWAIIAN

You can thank Waikiki for this tiki drink. In 1957, a sales representative of Dutch distiller Bols asked legendary hotel bartender Harry Yee to design a drink that featured its blue color of curaçao liqueur cocktail that shares its name with the 1961 Elvis Presley film. 3/4 oz Vodka 3/4 oz Light rum 1/2 oz Blue Curaçao 3 oz pineapple juice 1 oz Sweet-and-sour mix Instructions: Add all ingredients into a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled. Strain into a hurricane glass over crushed or pebble ice. Garnish with a pineapple wedge and cocktail umbrella.

PET HEALTH

Anesthesia Free Pet Dentistry – A Terrible Idea

Does your dog or cat have stinky breath or brown teeth? Periodontal disease is the most common disease that pets develop. Eighty to 85% of dogs and cats have some degree of infection. It’s not just a cosmetic problem. Chronic infection shortens their life because of effects on other organs, especially the heart, kidneys, and liver, not to mention the pain that bad teeth can cause. Veterinarians are trained to diagnose and treat periodontal disease. Unfortunately, there is a fad to offer “anesthesia free dentistry” by untrained people at grooming parlors, pet food stores or even some veterinary providers. Anesthesia free dentistry is a terrible idea and here’s why. Pet owners may be told it’s just like a human going to the dentist. That’s false. Pets are physically restrained against their will for lengthy periods of time with no understanding of what is happening to them. They struggle to free themselves while providers hold them down. Think how hard it is to get your pet to hold still just to trim their nails, give them a pill or brush their teeth. Hand scaling uses sharp metal instruments, so even slight movement can cause injury to their teeth, gums, lips, even the eyes. Also, as the pet is struggling, it can aspirate pieces of tartar as it is removed. Fractures of the jaw have been known to occur. Pets’ teeth are scraped with a metal tool to clean tartar off the crowns. First, crowns are only about 2% of the problem. Pathology takes place under the gums and this is where veterinarians concentrate their treatment. An “anesthesia free” procedure gives you a false sense of accomplishment. The effect is purely cosmetic and does nothing to improve the health of the pet, which is the most unfortunate misconception by loving pet owners who don’t realize the potential oral health problems still sitting beneath their pet’s gums. Hand scaling with metal instruments causes etches in the enamel of the teeth. Veterinarians use power instruments that cause less etching and use a light touch with hand instruments on the enamel because the pet is sedated. Then the teeth are polished to smooth the enamel. With “anesthesia free” procedures, deeper grooves are made in the enamel of the teeth, which enables tartar to attach and accumulate even faster. It is very common to find abscessed teeth, fractured teeth, and bone loss on x-rays that no one could see just by looking in the mouth. It is illegal in the US and Canada for anyone to provide dental services other than a DVM or a supervised, trained licensed veterinary technician working directly with a DVM. Owners are commonly concerned about putting their beloved pets under anesthesia, but modern anesthetic techniques and monitoring equipment make it as safe as in human medicine. As you can hopefully see, there is more risk if any dental procedure is done without anesthesia.

FISHING

By Capt. Dylan Hubbard

HubbardsMarina.com • 727.393.1947

FISHING Hubbards Marina is FISHING AGAIN!!!!

Red snapper season 2020 has been FINALIZED for the federal for hire recreational anglers! We will have red snapper season open for our boats at Hubbard’s marina starting June 1st until midnight August 1st! INSHORE The redfish bite has been good. They love live pinfish or white bait, gold spoons and soft plastic paddle tails. Most were caught around the docks, mangrove shorelines and oyster bars. Snook were caught at night around the passes, docks and mouth of the bay. The best live bait is finger mullet, live pigfish or white bait. Try flair hawk style baits, soft plastics and jerk bait artificial lures. Trout have been active at night in dock or bridge lights on the passes. The edges of the grass flats or potholes of the flats are good places to try and catch them in daytime. Trout like the soft plastics, live shrimp or live white bait. Lighter tackle and stealthy approach and presentation is key to catching plenty of trout. Sheepshead are still plentiful near docks, bridges, piers, or jetties. Early morning is a good time to try and pull a few when the water is a bit chillier. Mackerel seem to be everywhere at the mouth of the bay, in the passes and on the beaches. Fast moving flashy lures are best for the mackerel. You will typically find the mackerel working a bait school to the surface and seabirds try and pick off a few baits of their own. Pompano are fairly prolific right now along our beaches and inside the sandier passes. NEAR SHORE Hogfish are still biting near shore in 30-70 feet of water. Live shrimp, light tackle, Snapper bite has been good. Red grouper action has been good around the hard-bottom areas. Large squid strips, big live pinfish or large doubled up threadfin are great options for red grouper. Kingfish and Mackerel are thick near shore right now from the beaches out to the deepest near shore waters. However, I would target them around 40-80 feet of water right now on those largest ledges, rock piles or artificial reefs that hold lots of bait. OFFSHORE The Snapper is excited by the full moon. The nighttime fishing 1-2 days ahead of the full moon is my favorite, followed by a few days behind the moon. The big mangrove snapper and fat red grouper are waiting for us around that deep-water area past 150 feet of water. They are hungry this time of year. Scamp grouper are typically past 150-200 feet. Pelagic action is on fire offshore just like the near shore waters. However, they just seem more prolific and aggressive and larger offshore. The blackfin tuna, kingfish and sailfish are most common in that order right now, but the occasional wahoo is possible too! Watch Fox 13’s Good Day Tampa Bay show every Friday morning starting around 8:15am to see Cpt Dylan Hubbard with tons of fishing tips, tricks, updates and more. Please tune into Fox 13 on Friday mornings to watch the show and if you are not local, you can watch it LIVE on their website www.fox13news.com/live.

“Get Sirius About Your Future”

May 2020 Astrology There is plenty of action in the cosmos this month beginning with the Full Flower Moon in Scorpio, the sign of intensity on the 7th. This is, as expected, an emotionally charged time; but now carries with it some confusion of the facts and a tendency to fool ourselves. We desire leisure time to escape the reality of our current situations. We may be willful, moody and determined to have our way. But Scorpio being the sign of transformation also asks us to release the old and become new now. Thinking planet Mercury visits clever Gemini on the 11th for most of the month. Our minds are restless, and we want to be active but planetary patterns aren’t giving us clear direction and we may become scattered. Action planet Mars in dreamy Pisces on the 13th boosts creativity and sensitivity but not initiative. Write down those creative ideas for later on! Also, on the 13th, love and money planet, Venus takes a Retrograde direction. It is a great time to reconnect in relationships and make peace where needed. REsolve any issues and REflect on your true values. A purchase now may not fulfill your needs or taste later; so, spend wisely. But, a day of self-care and pampering can be healthy and uplifting in every way! Saturn, planet of rules and regulations, stations Retrograde on the 11th in the humanitarian sign Aquarius. You can bet there will be some REviewing of these matters during the next four months! Also, just three days later on the 14th, giant planet Jupiter slows down in the business and government sign of Capricorn. More REviewing energy as the world slows down to REconsider what has been going on and how to move forward in the fall. On the 20th the Sun visits adaptable, restless Gemini and the New Moon occurs on the 22nd as she joins the Sun and the next lunar cycle begins. 62

MAY 2020 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

We feel clever and inventive wanting to express new insights but may still not have the clarity to develop our direction. However, conversations are highlighted and enjoyed as well as local trips and everyday activities. On the 28th when Mercury moves on to emotional Cancer we speak and listen with sensitivity. Our intuition is heightened, and we are more sympathetic.

A new study interests you and reconnecting to those farther away enjoyed.

TAURUS: Relationships are in the spotlight early on, talking things over for understanding then make adjustments. Reviewing finances and exploring several new earning possibilities comes later on. Energy goes into goals.

SAGITTARIUS: Private life is highlighted, and you enjoy solitude and introspection. Homelife gets active with projects. New paths begin in biz and personal relationships; smooth over misunderstandings; cooperate.

GEMINI: The focus on health and work opportunities monopolize your time. Action in career area brings options. You are animated and charming as fresh, new paths appear on the horizon. Reconnect to yourself and others.

CAPRICORN: Spotlight falls on social activities, friends and fun times. Daily life is energized. Revise health habits and self-care routines. A new start in the workplace is a welcomed challenge to routine with uncertainties.

CANCER: Romance and recreation take center stage. Children need your support. Travel cautiously. Private life is accented as new plans are made in seclusion. Feelings can be misleading, confusing. Expenses unforeseen.

AQUARIUS: Position and career are highlighted and may assist income but spend wisely. A busy home and family life continue. A new start with old hobbies, fun, and children later. Reconnecting romantically is likely.

LEO: Home projects and family matters have your full attention with the help you need and financial creativity to succeed. Reconnect with friends and use resources carefully. New goals must leave room for the unknown.

PISCES: Education and travel are your focus as May begins. Mid-month you are energized as home life gets active. New beginnings with family and home life as you get reconnected close out the month pleasantly.

VIRGO: Everyday life keeps you busy with more short trips, conversations, and learning as you go along. Reconnect to others that can assist career as a new start come later this month. Work with partner for understanding.

ARIES: You begin May with a focus on resources and finances being creative and gaining support. Later you want to get away from it all to relax but pleasant conversations and daily life keep you busy with many projects.

LIBRA: Full moon spotlight falls on finances, earning and values. Remote work could be an option. Keep your immune system strong and rest often.

SCORPIO: You are on center stage as you balance relationships and home duties. Fun is on your mind and resources need attention. New financial plans with variables work well, but recreation expenses add up.
