While the weather’s been especially mild here in Paradise this winter, the political climate has been downright heated. Our readers know we are apolitical, but we do fancy ourselves communicators for our communities. As such, we introduce candidates on occasion and somtimes report political outcomes, especially when it seems to mark a change in direction. Change seems to be in the wind a lot lately, at least since November. Madeira Beach is perhaps the biggest shocker. Three years ago Travis Paladino was re-elected as mayor with a startling 82% of the vote. Shane Crawford, the City Manager seemed to be almost universally popular. In a resounding reversal, anti-redevelopment forces seized control, replacing the mayor and both sitting commissioners who were running for re-election.

In Treasure Island too, which always seems to have an anti-height mentality, commisioners in favor of a planned development district were replaced by contra-growth forces, causing long-time city manager Reid Silverboard to offer his resignation, effective May 8th. St. Pete Beach’s outcome was surprisingly non-controversial. Interim mayor Shechner turned her gavel over to Mayor Al Johnson to a round of applause. All commissioners remained seated so far. But enough about all that. With season in full swing and the awesome weather, markets, events and festivals have been everywhere. Lows in the 6o’s and highs in the 80’s are part of our definition of paradise. Enjoy life without air conditioning while you can. We bought our second Chevy Volt when the lease expired on the first one in September. Our 10 KW roof-mounted solar electric system has been providing all the power we need to run our home, our business and most of the power for the Volt, with which we deliver bulk copies of Paradise NEWS, with a monthly power bill averaging under $25. It is a technology we love to utilize and talk about. This is after all the Sunshine State. Thanks so much to all of you who tell us how much you enjoy reading Paradise NEWS. We never tire of hearing it.

Letters Dear Renee & Peter: You have afforded me the very enjoyable opportunity to contribute to your outstanding publication as it has grown, but I feel that it's time to provide my column's space for your continued growth. In addition, I'm having some health issues since our loss of Charlie, one of which (a near-stroke) put me in the hospital, in addition to blood pressure problems. "Treasured Tales" has been a most rewarding experience! If there is ever any feature article I might be able to provide, I hope you will contact me. Kindest regards - Julian Fant.

HelloWe truly enjoy reading through the Paradise News. My Lisa took this beautiful sunset photo this past week

from our back yard in Belle Vista. The sunset, the Don, and McPherson Bayou all teamed up for a great "cellphone" shot. Hope you like it as much as we do. - Nick Pusta

The treasure of Treasure Island is the beach. All the people that own and live on the beach are here because of the beautiful sand and the recreation opportunities of the beach. We fear the condition of the beach is going to effect tourism and all the financial benefits to the community. The city only selectively rakes a small portion of the sand in front of a few hotels. The rest of us are stuck with sand burrs, weeds and ugly invasive growth. What can we do to get our beautiful beach back, like what it is in front of those few hotels. Treasure Sands Condominium, - Dennis & Dorothy Denton

April 28th Kindness Day: International Pay It Forward Day now has a Tampa Bay presence, thanks to local small business owner, Denise Seaman, and her team at Home Care Now. For the first time in our local history, several neighboring cities will band together to sign proclamations for this special holiday based on the kindness of strangers. Multiple Mayors are making official proclamations and inspiring their families, friends and neighbors to get involved. Armed with Pay it Forward bracelets, her team is spreading the word throughout Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough counties and engaging others to do the same specifically for senior citizens they encounter. When a good deed is acknowledged, the bracelet is given to the recipient to ‘pay it forward’ to someone else and keep the chain of good deeds going. No Hungry Families: The Kind Mouse, whose mission is to “assist families in transition and their chronically hungry children,” now operates out of a multi-roomed location in St. Petersburg. Labeled bins of canned food, cereal, oatmeal and boxed food like macaroni

TradeWinds Island Resorts Offers to Help Pay For SPB Sewer Repairs by Peter Roos TradeWinds Resort executives want to build the proposed "Sugar Sands at TradeWinds Island Resorts on St. Pete Beach" on the former site of the Coral Reef Hotel. Sugar Sands would be the city's first major redevelopment project in over a decade. The twelve (12) story building will include a 217 room hotel, an 811 space, ten-story parking garage, office space and IT room, five story commercial space, which will eventually house a Blue Green Sales Center, Reservations office, HR office, Spa and Fitness Center. Included in the scope are a pool with hot tub, pool bar, towel distribution building with restrooms, site work, paving, drainage and underground utilities. Total construction cost is estimated at $60,000,000. Construction plans have been circulated and bids have been obtained. Major draw back to the project is St. Pete Beach’s continuing sewer system problems. TradeWinds spokesperson Tim Bogott is excited about the project, and has presented

an offer to the city for what appears to be a no lose opportunity to solve at least half of the expensive infrastructure problems and allow the loan to be paid back from new sewer connections instead of residents getting a huge tax increase. The city commission is expected to hear a presentation of the plan at its April 11 commission meeting. When asked about the proposal, newly elected mayor Al Johnson said that he had spoken to state representative Kathleen Peters about the plan and about other potential funding sources. “She said that the legislators love to hear about public-private partnerships being used to solve such problems. The city’s chances for help from the state would be greatly improved by embracing such an offer. For the TradeWinds it is more a matter of economics than philanthropy. The sooner they build, the sooner they can rent out the rooms and sell shares in the newly built building. They need the parking for guests,

employees and future construction plans. The TradeWinds has done a remarkable job of making people think they are having a luxury vacation in the patchwork of ‘60’s motels that are cobbled together on the resort’s 30 beachfront acres. Imaging what they will do with a fancy new building! "If new redevelopment is not allowed to occur, then as older properties reach the end of their economic life, they will be forced to convert to residential condominiums,'' Bogott has been quoted as saying." resulting in a loss of tourism and significantly eroding the county's tax base.” St. Pete Beach’s new mayor is also hopeful that the county commission will agree to the city’s application for the CRA (Community Redevelopment Area) for Corey, Gulf Blvd. and Blind Pass that was denied when first applied for. That plan would allow the city to retain a larger share of tax increases from new development for infrastructure costs. PN

What’s Up @ Bat By Nanette Wiser

nd

Rays opening day on April 2 is one of the spring’s most anticipated events for everyone, and especially since they challenge the Yankees at home. New turf at the Trop, dozens of concerts and fan giveaways (bobbleheads, bat pack, shades, Chris Archer emoji pillows) delight baseball fans. Trop Delights In addition to kicking off your game day with a stop at Ferg’s for a drink and a snack, the Trop offers some yummy chow and craft beers as well. You can count on seeing some of our favorites including the Everglades Brewhouse (located near Gate 1 in Center Field Street, Pipo’s Cuban sandwiches, Ricky P’s shrimp and catfish Po’ Boys, Pili’s smoked bacon stuffed potatos, Taco bus and local craft beers (Big Storm, 3 Daughters, Green Bench, Jai Alai and Cycle Fixie). Giving Back To Our Community But the Rays bring more than just a baseball game to the mix. They support our children’s dreams. Wannabe Rays can sign up for kids summer camp starting June 9 to develop budding baseball skills and just have fun (http://tampabay.rays.mlb.com/tb/community/baseball-camps).

They support breast cancer awareness. Currently, the Rays are encouraging folks to enter Major League Baseball’s 2017 Honorary Bat Girl Contest (HonoraryBatGirl.com). Here, fans 18 and older can share stories of how they, or their loved ones, are supporting the cause to raise awareness and find a cure for breast cancer in “Going to Bat Against Cancer” by submitting entries through Wednesday, April 12. Supporters of contest participants have the opportunity to vote online for these inspirational stories. Winners will receive pink MLB merchandise and be recognized on the field prior to the Rays 1:10 pm game against the New York Yankees on Sunday, May 21.

They support those who serve. Rays raise money for non-profits and give away tickets to first responders, military and teachers on Salute to Service Monday (two tickets to six Monday home games plus more; raysbaseball.com/specials).

On Mother’s Day, players and on-field personnel will wear the symbolic pink ribbon on their uniforms along with pink wrist bands. Players also will wear

Play Ball, Let’s Eat By Nanette Wiser Baseball season is in full swing. Plan to come hungry and stay late. One thing is for sure; you won’t go hungry. Whether you nosh at The Trop or grab something to eat at Ferg’s before or after the game, DSTP and the Rays deliver on winning games (we hope!) & delicious diversions. Here’s what’s new and where to hang out. The Trop’s New Chef Executive Chef Marcelo Miranda is now in charge of all food operations at Tropicana Field, from the suites to the seats. A graduate of the esteemed Culinary Institute of America, he was formerly the executive chef for Turner Field, executive chef at the Kansas City Speedway, culinary director for the WinStar World Casino and he regularly performs volunteer work for local food networks. New Eats New to the lineup is the Urban Dugout, a food stand operated by Urban Restaurant Group. Their St. Petersburg restaurants — Urban Brew and BBQ, Urban Comfort, Urban Deli and Drafts and Urban Creamery—serve up fresh goodies prepared from scratch. The stand will feature a selection of favorites including their famous crispy fried chicken sandwich, chicken and waffles, homemade mac and cheese and delicious BBQ plates. Fish Shack offers Florida seafood favorites, including delicious crispy fried fish sandwiches, fried seafood baskets and garlic crab fries. The Wine Cellar serves premium wines by the glass or full bottle carafe for fans to share in their seats. Enjoy a classic Cuban, Cuban burger or vegetarian Cuban (fresh grilled veggies and mozzarella cheese). The Burger Up! Satand features a behemoth burger (locally sourced beef patty) between two buttery grilled cheese sandwiches. My favorite offered during day games is the Brunch Bloody Mary, a skewer of sausage, egg, chicken and waffles, bacon and donuts served in a keepsake mason jar.

What’s Back? Taco Bus, Pipo’s and Evan Longoria’s Ducky’s restaurant all return this season, as well. For the second year, Rays and Green Bench Brewing—St. Petersburg’s first craft microbrewery—have partnered to create a beer just for the Trop: 4-Seam American Lager (4.8% ABV) will make its debut for the 2017 season. Craft Beers @ The Brewhouse: With 38 taps, the Brewhouse offers more variety than anywhere in the ballpark. From wheat beers and blonde ales to IPAs and a sour grapefruit Gose, the Everglades Brewhouse is the best spot to sample beer from St. Petersburg and beyond. Sports Bars We Love Don’t want to deal with crowds? Why not catch the game at some of our favorite sports bars. At the beaches, The Guy Harvey Outpost serves up a Rays Watch parties where you can watch the Rays on a big screen TV right on the beach May 14, July 30, Aug. 27 and Sept. 24. Rumfish Grill is a cool place to chill over tasty appetizers such as firecracker shrimp & Korean BBQ beef skewer.

April 27-30 • St. Petersburg STORY by STEVE TRAIMAN Photos courtesy of Sunscreen Film Festival

he Sunscreen Film Festival, launched in 2006, has grown from its first festival in a local art gallery with 600 attendees. It is organized and presented by the St. Petersburg-Clearwater Film Society Inc. The nonprofit 501(c)(3) charity is dedicated to education, economic development, informing the public about the art of visual storytelling, enhancing opportunities for local filmmakers to develop their craft and art, and increasing the public’s awareness and support of local filmmaking as a cultural and economic asset. Founder Tony Armer, who is also the Pinellas County Film Commissioner, provided some relevant details: “With the Pinellas County Film Commission as the headline sponsor, the festival now is an internationally-recognized event with an annual attendance of over 10,000 in St. Petersburg and Los Angeles. In 2013 the festival expanded to Los Angeles and now holds the Florida version in the spring and the Los Angeles version in the fall each year.”

This year’s event downtown has Opening Night Film Screenings Thursday (27) at The Palladium, followed by dual screenings Friday through Sunday (28-30) at the AMC Theaters Sundial and American Stage. Film Workshops are Friday-Sunday at American Stage. Festival Executive Director Ryan Tarrant told Paradise News, “Among accepted films for the 2017 Festival are 16 excellent submissions by local Pinellas County filmmaker/directors. Included are Tiny Bacteria, Victoria Jorgensen; The Newest Member, Andi Matheny; You Are Not Alone, Cam Simon; Oklahoma Sun, Andrew Andrade; T’s Up: Branding Team Tampa, Travis Bell; BTS, Christian Schwier; Ava’s Blood, Kira Howe; Good Ol’ Fashioned Christmas Video, Daniel O'Ryan; Ransom, Stefanie Davis; It’s Not About Sex, Anjani Pandey; All consuming films short, Jeremy Jones, Logan James, Chuck Ardezzone; One Step From Alpha, Hector Luis Soto Vazquez; Bedsheets & Cigarettes, Alan Mehanna; 812 Knavish Way, Eric Stalnaker; The Deposition, Carrie Drazek; Phone, David Scott Leatherwood; Eat Speak St. Pete, David Vega. This year’s confirmed celebrity list includes Dylan McDermott who will be at the festival for Opening Night’s feature film Blind, and Sugar, which is in the Spotlight category. Retrospective Screenings will include Daphne Zuniga, on hand honoring the 30th Anniversary of Mel Brooks’ classic Spaceballs. Robert Davi will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award and Joe Pantoliano will be honored with a Legacy Award. Tarrant provided this additional festival history: “In May 2006, the inaugural festival was held at Studio@620 in downtown St. Petersburg, screening 35 short and feature films over two days and hosting two world premieres. That event had a standing-room-only attendance of more than 600 film lovers and filmmakers, some traveling from as far as New York City and Los Angeles. “Due to overwhelming popularity, the festival expanded in 2007 and 2008 to include the Vinoy Renaissance Resort and Golf Club. With this added new venue, the festival drew more than 100 short and feature films on multiple screens, and celebrity guests included actors John Travolta & Kelly Preston. “In 2009, the venue moved to the Muvico (now AMC) Baywalk 20, where the celebrity roster grew to include actors Patrick Wilson, Michael Rooker, Bill Cobbs, and Jeffrey Donovan. More than 70 short and feature films were screened, including the Southeastern premiere of Passengers, starring Anne Hathaway and Patrick Wilson. “That year, MovieMaker magazine voted Sunscreen one of the ‘25 Coolest Film Fests’ in the country. In 2013-2014, Sunscreen was one of only 23 film fests nationwide to be sponsored and acknowledged by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.” Awards are given for Best Short Film, Student Film, Feature Film, Documentary, Director, Florida Film, Latin Film, Latin Documentary, International Film, Webisode, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress. Founder Tony Armer told Paradise News, “Programming Director Joe Restaino has done an amazing job selecting and recruiting films, resulting in one of the best array of submissions ever. Add in some great celebrities, workshops and parties, and we’re looking forward to one of our best ever Sunscreen Film Festivals here in St. Petersburg.” More information on the 2017 Sunscreen Film Festival, check the website at www.suncreeenfilmfestival.com or contact Ryan Tarrant at: ryan@sunscreenfilmfestival.com [Editor’s Note: Special thanks to Tony Armer, Ryan Tarrant and Harry Chittenden at the Sunscreen Film Festival for their excellent information and photos.} [Steve Traiman is President of Creative Copy by Steve Traiman in St. Pete Beach, offering freelance business writing services. MANATEE steamer from St. Petersburg to Bradenton to Pass-a-Grille

dd the revived Clearwater Ferry, the St. Pete Beach Island Ferry and the Tampa Pirate Taxi Service, and water transportation is definitely on the rise for the Tampa Bay area. In his 1999 book Pass-a-Grill Vignettes: Times Past, Tales Remembered, late historian Frank T. Hurley Jr. recalled “everybody’s Favorite Line,” the steamship company that operated four steamer ferries from 1901 to late 1924 when the Gandy Bridge opened. The flagship Favorite could carry 1,000 passengers or 750 with cargo aboard. The usual schedule was two boats daily out of Tampa, with stopovers at the old wooden pier at Second Avenue North in St. Petersburg, then onto Bradenton with a stop at Pass-a-Grille at the old Eighth Avenue or Tenth Avenue docks. Visitors had about three hours to enjoy the great beaches and local restaurants, with a round-trip of about 11 hours to and from Tampa. Fare was 75 cents for adults, 40 cents for children! In Hurley’s earlier 1977 book, Surf Sand & Post Card Sunsets, he provided a brief history of the original Merry Pier, which was the Eighth Avenue ferry dock. It was named after Captain Joseph E. Merry who opened his original bait and tool store, the first in Pass-a-Grille— at the end of the dock, in 1902. He also rented boats for excursions, adding food a year later. The current Merry Pier still sells bait and is the station for daily trips to Shell Key today. Another early service was the Bee Line Ferry. Before the first Sunshine Skyway bridge was built in 1954, it was a 69-mile trip from Manatee to Pinellas County. You drove up 41 through Tampa and across the bay on either the Gandy Bridge on the south or the Courtney Campbell Bridge on the north through Oldsmar.

The former steamer WILMINGTON, which made daily trips from Wilmington, NC, to the Carolina beaches from the early 1900’s to the 1930’s, became the PINELLAS, a Tampa Bay ferry that went between Bradenton, Tampa and St. Petersburg as the Bee Line Ferry. The ferry shortened the trip from Manatee to Pinellas County to just 22 miles, and it crossed Tampa Bay in one hour. The ferry stopped running in the early fifties after the first Sunshine Skyway Bridge opened to automobile traffic, and became a popular fishing excursion boat.

Other Local Ferry Notes Other local Tampa Bay area Ferry service projects have had varying degrees of success. Capt. Mark Hubbard of Hubbard's Marina at John’s Pass Village launched the MADEIRA BEACH FERRY AND WATER TAXI at last October’s John’s Pass Seafood Festival. The trips have run Friday through Sunday to nine designated locations including John’s Pass Village and Boardwalk, Jungle Prada Park and Gator’s Café and Saloon on Treasure Island, with more stops to be added as demand increases. Full weekday service began for the recent March “spring break” from 10 am to 10 pm Monday-Friday. One-way tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for children and free under age 3, with an all-day pass for $20. “Based on our ferry traffic the past five months, business for the future only looks good,” Hubbard told Paradise News.“We’re banking on the public’s acceptance that 'waterboard' transportation is here now. I like how the Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties are finally getting on board with their support of the water transit idea.” The first ferry service in 2000 between the mainland and Clearwater Beach—to ease the serious traffic and parking problems -- did not entice enough passengers, so the City-sponsored service was discontinued. In February 2015, Tropics Boat Tours launched a privatelyfunded CLEARWATER FERRY service. At that time, co-owner Trisha Rodriguez noted that it was geared toward employees of beach businesses who had little or no parking available. ParadiseNewsFL.com | APRIL 2017

Cross Bay Ferry Update

Ferry Pinellas became an Excursion Boat

Starting with the 42-passenger Maddie’s Crossing, the service has added the 21-passenger Hailey’s Crossing for longer trips like the Caladesi Island Excursions, and the 98-passenger Monica’s Crossing for busy event days and weekend service. There’s direct service from downtown Clearwater to Clearwater Beach, and alternate service from downtown with stops at Island Estates and North Beach en route to Clearwater Beach. Current fares are $4 one-way for adults; $3 for business employees, seniors and military; $2 for kids 4-12; with kids under 3, free. There are also monthly, seasonal (March 15August 15) passes, with discounts for beach business employees. For current schedule: www.clearwaterferrry.com

ISLAND FERRY was launched in June 2013 to provide service from Pass-a-Grille Marina to the downtown St. Petersburg Municipal Marina. General Manager Sebastian Font told Paradise News,“There just wasn’t enough interest to support regular ferry service, but we’ve successfully transformed by offering upscale boat tours from St. Pete Beach. We have private charters, Sunset and Dolphin Cruises, Island and Restaurant Hopping, plus Snorkeling to Egmont Key and Shell Key.” For fare and other information, call 727-742-2277 or email: info@islandferry.biz Troy Manthey, who owns Yacht StarShip Dining Cruises, launched PIRATE WATER TAXI in February 2016 with three 40 to 50-passenger pirate-themed water taxis with 18 stops from downtown Tampa to the Riverwalk, Channel District, Davis Islands and other locales. Their captains are dressed as pirates and offer tours and a light historical narrative in character Just added are five roundtrips daily from downtown up the Hillsborough River to Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. When the Cross Bay Ferry service between downtown Tampa and St. Petersburg was confirmed for the six-month pilot program, the Pirate Water Taxi schedules were coordinated -- so passengers from St. Petersburg who got off the ferry at the Tampa Convention Center could go east toward the Channel District or up the Hillsborough River. With the goal of taking more cars off the St. Pete to Tampa bridges, in August 2016 the St. Petersburg City Council and Pinellas County officials issued their final approval for a separate Cross Bay Ferry I(CBF) service connecting its downtown to downtown Tampa. Both the operating agreement with HMS Ferries and the interlocal agreement splitting the $1.4 million, six-month pilot project at $350,000 each from St. Pete, Pinellas County, Tampa and Hillsborough County were approved. Service began November 4, with one-way fares for the 50minute trip $10 for adults, $8 for children and those under 3 free. The boat, on loan from Boston, can transport up to 149 passengers with space for up to 36 bikes at an added cost of $1 per trip. It runs from downtown St. Pete in the Vinoy basin adjacent to the St. Pete History Museum to downtown Tampa near the Tampa Convention Center. HMS Ferries and its partners are working with local businesses to provide discounts for ferry passengers and lower commuter fares are also possible. At the launch, Ed Turanchik with Akerman LLP, project policy advisor and spokesman, said, "We only have one vessel, and one crew, so we cannot do everything, but we do mean to showcase this technology to a lot of people and test ferry service in a variety of ways and markets. I think we have managed to do the most we can possibly do in a single, short pilot project." With about three months of the pilot test now completed, the Ferry hit a milestone in late January, with ticket sales generating enough revenue to cover costs, which enabled the management company to start returning money to the four “investors.”About $10,000 was shared in January, and another $44,600 as of March 28, with continuing good traffic reported with a one-way price cut to $5. Credit should be shared by Schifino Lee Advertising + Branding as the agency of record, and the Tucker/Hall public relations firm as part of the marketing team. Turanchik told Paradise News,“The success of the CBF has helped rekindle the MacDill Air Force Base passenger ferry project. The County Commission will be funding the design, engineering and permitting of that project this year, with the goal of start-up of service in 2020. “This likely means that continuation of the CBF for a second season will be considered in light of that project. It isn't clear when a decision about an extension of CBF service will be made, but with an April 30 end of the pilot program, in practical terms, it would probably have to happen before this June.

“I really don't know how it would be funded at this point in time. Funding for any extension would need to be entirely local. At this time there are no federal funds that could be used for this project, and there is no pending request for state funds.” St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman was the first executive from any of the four investors to acknowledge the CBF success with increased ridership and repayment of a first installment on the total $1.4 million investment shared equally by St. Pete, Tampa, Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties. He told the Pinellas County Commission March 28 that his staff is contacting state and federal officials to see what is required to possibly contribute funds to bring the temporary ferry service back to the Tampa Bay area in November. Turanchik also noted,“The schedule will be changed for April to provide evening, weekday service instead of day-

time. This will allow people to get to and from Rays’ games and Lightning games, assuming the latter make the playoffs.” For updated Cross Bay Ferry service schedule and fares: www.crossbayferry.com

At least 35 states, including Florida, currently have passenger ferry service. Systems in Alaska, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Texas each carried more than 5 million passengers in 2014. California’s ferries had over 10 million passengers that year, Texas carried over 13 million, and Washington state carried nearly 26 million. In comparison, ferries in Florida carried less than 1 million passengers in 2014. However, with the new local ferry services, since that time Florida ferries probably doubled this total to 2 million up through the past six months – and better days and more miles are likely ahead!

The Studio@620 honors the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s legacy with "Voodoo Macbeth", inspired by Orson Welles' historic 1936 production. For those unfamiliar, the play centers on a brave Scottish general named Macbeth who receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. An all African American cast directed by Bob Devin Jones, will include local notables Sharon Scott, Kylin Brady, Nadine Smith, James L. Lincoln, and Cranstan Cumberbatch, and features Erica Sutherlin as Lady Macbeth & Calvin M. Thompson as Macbeth. A soundscape composed of percussion and live sound effects and a creative installation of the set by artist Ya La Ford will add to this unique dramatization! • Studio @ 620: Music, art, spoken word, poetry, this performance/visual art gallery is a downtown treasure. 620 First Avenue S., downtown St. Petersburg 727-895-6620 http://www.thestudioat620.org/ Palladium/Side Door/Hough Hall: One of our favorite venues, this refurbished beauty is hip and happening. It’s Christmas 1968, and Judy Garland is booked for six weeks of “comeback concerts” at London’s Talk of the Town. The failed marriages, the suicide attempts, and the addictions are all behind her. At forty-six and with new flame Mickey Deans at her side, she seems determined to carry it off and recapture her magic. But stormy skies are on the horizon as old patterns resurface, and the drama backstage chips away at the onstage brilliance of one of the greatest singers of all time. Shifting back and forth between moments of onstage triumph and backstage tribulation, this speculation on a pivotal chapter in the life of a legend is at once wildly entertaining, irreverently funny, and deeply moving. The Morean Arts Center started in 1917 as The Art Club of St. Petersburg, the first art gallery south of Atlanta, on Beach Drive. In 1963, as plans for the Museum of Fine Arts took shape, it became clear the Art Club needed to find a new home. 201 Beach Drive – the old homestead – was razed in 1965 after the Museum of Fine Arts opened. A kapok tree was planted in 1965 to commemorate the Art Club. After two additional moves and a name change, the Art Club is now known as the Morean Arts Center. 719 Central Ave. http://www.moreanartscenter.org/ classes-2/; 727.822.7872 PN

At age 86, David Amram is still writing, playing and improvising. Tierra Verde, FL- Tampa Bay Watch will host the 12th Annual Ed Alber Tarpon Rodeo, a catch and release fishing tournament on June 8 & 9 with cash prizes totaling $4,000. Anglers will fish their favorite spots throughout Tampa Bay from one mile offshore running north to Redington Fishing Pier and south to Longboat Pass. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit Tampa Bay Watch, a nonprofit organization with a mission to protect and restore the marine and wetland environments of the Tampa Bay estuary through scientific and educational programs. The tournament festivities will kick off at the TradeWinds Island Resort in St. Pete Beach on Thursday, June 8 at 6 pm with exciting live and silent auctions, great food and drinks, and the Captain's Meeting. Anglers will hunt for the Silver King on Tampa Bay during the all-release tarpon tournament on Friday, June 9 from 2-8pm. Vessels will launch from the Fort De Soto Park boat ramp. The Awards Ceremony will be held at the Tampa Bay Watch Marine Center from 8-10pm for anglers to enjoy a well-deserved meal by Bonefish Grill. The tournament is open to the public but it is sure to fill up fast with anglers who love to fish, catch and release! To register, please call Tampa Bay Watch at 727-867-8166 x234 or visit tampabaywatch.org/edalbertarponrodeo. Several sponsorship packages are available at various levels from $800 to $5,000. This is a great opportunity for businesses to gain advertising exposure and philanthropic recognition through being associated with this highly visible tournament. Individual tickets to the Captain’s Banquet are $75 each if purchased prior to April 30. The Sport Division is open to Bronze Sponsors ($1,500) and individual boat entries. Gold ($5,000) and Silver ($3,000) sponsors will be eligible to compete in the Great Bay Guardians Division. Like in previous events, tarpon and shark (minimum 24”) are eligible. The winning boat will be determined by total number of tarpon or shark legally released per boat. Tampa Bay Watch is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) stewardship program dedicated exclusively to the charitable and scientific purpose of protecting and restoring the marine and wetland environments of the Tampa Bay estuary encompassing over 400 square miles of open water and 2,300 square miles of highly- developed watershed. Tampa Bay Watch involves more than 10,000 youth and adult volunteers each year in hands on habitat restoration projects. For more information, visit www.tampabaywatch.org, or call 727-867-8166.

by Captain Mark & Dylan Hubbard • 727.393.1947 John’s Pass Boardwalk, Madeira Beach HubbardsMarina.com INSHORE - The pompano bite is really hot right now along the jetties of Johns Pass and the beaches. They are loving live shrimp along the bottom or Nekid ball jigz bounced along the sand. These pompano are great eating too, and bite best in the early morning or just before dark. The snook action has been hit and miss, they really fire up but then as quickly as they start it ends. We’ve seen some monsters caught inside the pass along the beach behind our office. White bait is making its return to the area in big numbers along the beach and there’s not much time till they flood the passes again bringing the mackerel into the bay and making our trout, snook, tarpon and redfish get fat again. Tarpon will be everywhere soon as the spring time waters warm and the bait returns the silver kings won’t be too far behind the large bait schools.

NEAR SHORE- The red grouper bite has really picked up for us with the warming waters. We’re seeing them start to be more aggressive and moving a bit closer to shore. They love long strips of

squid strips cut to imitate octopus tentacles, this is our favorite bait to drift for red grouper. Since red grouper are foragers that move over large areas of hard rock bottom drifting is a great technique to show your baits to more red grouper and increase chances of catching plenty. Gag or black grouper are very different they hide under specific structures so they require you to –anchor and present your baits naturally calmly on the bottom so they can approach after everything has settled. Red grouper are more reactionary feeders and are much more aggressively hunting areas of hard bottom for food. Hogfish bite is going very well as well and were seeing monsters on the 10 hour all day and private charters we caught two in one trip this past week over the 8lb range! OFFSHORE- Amberjack is closing and were very sad to see this happen with so much time left in our promised ten month season. However, there’s plenty of fat red grouper, scamp grouper, mangrove snapper, tuna, kingfish, wahoo, yellowtail and more ahead for us to catch. This past week we’ve been catching up our last few jacks before they close and catching plenty of tuna, red grouper and pig mangrove snapper too. The Flying HUB 2 extreme trips have been catching big African pompano out deep this time of year as well. We typically catch them while targeting mangrove snapper over large wrecks or springs up off the bottom. You should really see the latest videos on Facebook as we have been doing video updates after each long range trip returns: https://www.facebook.com/ hubbardsmarina/videos Want to read the past reports? S Syst by Sarah Lyons - Sirius ǯ ¢ ǯ ȱȊȱŝŘŝǯřŚŝǯŚŝřŝ “Get Sirius S about Your o Futurre” April 2017 Astrology Spring is here with an action packed planetary lineup to start the season! The lunar cycle will peak with a Full Pink Moon in relationship sign Libra on the 11th. This full moon celebrates the abundance of flowers that comes with spring! You can be sure that a few surprises will be revealed or illuminated at this time. Venus retrograde until the 15th will also help us to go back and mend fall outs or let go of things and make peace with others now. This is true in all types of relationships. Venus gets help from communication planet Mercury as our little friend stations retrograde on April 9! Now is the time for all kinds of unfinished business to get your attention before you start anything new at all. Mercury in Taurus will especially focus on money matters for about a week (just in time for taxes) then move on to action oriented Aries giving us energy to RE- just about anything! Keep on releasing, reviewing, reconnecting and reworking so you will be ready to really spring forward next month! The Sun enters practical, determined Taurus on April 19th grounding us and giving us the persistence to reach our goals; but allowing us to indulge a bit along the way! Two days later on the 21st, fiery Mars charges into Gemini leading us in as many directions as we want to go! A quick wit and restlessness for excitement keeps us motivated and active. This leads up to the next lunar cycle on the 26th when the New Moon in Tauruscenters us, bringing focus on material needs and possessions. This new cycle has creative, magical influences that ask us to use our imagination and make the most of what we already have or can repurpose. Also, a strong need for some down time either alone or with those whose company we enjoy, will mean a lot to our peace of mind. Love and money planet Venus visits impulsive Aries on the 28th. A cheerful and positive outlook brings a more outgoing, social vibe; but, overwhelming others or being too aggressive will spoil the moment. 68
