FROM THE PUBLISHER’S Change Is Neither All Good nor All Bad As the self-appointed reporters of community news of the south Pinellas barrier islands for over twenty years we have seen a lot of changes, and much resistance to change. As a general rule, many people who discover Paradise in Florida seem to want things to stay just as they found it. Of course, nothing stays the same forever. Not all changes are for the better, or worse. There is generally a good reason for resistance to change. People have seen what unbridled acceptance of growth can do to one’s quality of life. Some barrier islands in Florida are very good examples of what we do not want here. Even Paradise NEWS, the local magazine our readers love so much is in a constant state of change. Renee loves to say “ If you are not growing, you are dying. ” This issue, for example is 20% larger in both page count and in circulation than the one before, and it is the first issue in its more than 20-year history that is glossy throughout. We hope you enjoy these changes.

Much of the reason for the growth this issue is a special report on Madeira Beach, a formerly sleepy beach town whose residents for the most part knew they needed their city to change. Eighty-two percent of them voted for Travis Palladeno as mayor for a second time. This summer we look at what they’ve accomplished and what lies ahead for them, from John’s Pass Village north. We also introduce Selene in St. Pete Beach, one of the most welcome additions to barrier island fine dining, a former pancake house turned into a great fine dining destination, much like the former Robbies Pancake House in Treasure Island, which this month celebrates it’s tenth year as the much loved MiddleGrounds Grille.

Renee and I are proud to be celebrating the 45th anniversary of our union in August, and the fact that we have spent more than half of our life together here in Paradise. Renee was a beautiful young liberal arts major, born and raised in Tampa. A model, dancer, and dance teacher who had studied her art and performed many summers in New York, New England and Canada. I was a Canadian who recently discovered there was somewhere it didn’t snow and decided to spend the rest of my life there. We met at St. Pete Junior College in ‘Government’ class, in our sophomore year. We married a year later, within a few miles of where we now live and raised our only son, Jordan in the Tampa Bay area. We moved to Pass-a-Grille for him to attend Admiral Farragut Academy as a day student. We only planned to stay at the beach for three years, it will soon be thirty. We will celebrate our anniversary this summer with friends in one of our favorite parts of Colorado, thankful that we have been able to witness many changes while much in our lives has been a blessed constant, like our undying love for each other. Thankfully, some things never change.

We appreciate you publishing the announcement. You do make a huge difference. - Lynne McCaskill - Clothes To Kids – Media www.clothestokids.org/ I really enjoyed the June/July issue of Paradise News with its focus on the "green" effort. The Tampa Bay Automobile Museum in Pinellas Park is also a "green" facility the roof is covered with solar cells. On many days more electricity is generated than is needed and the excess is sent back to the grid. There is also a display on the use of hydrogen as a motor fuel. Keep up the good work! - John Perodeau My owners saw your article on Green/Eco-Hospitality and have asked why we were not listed. We have 2 Palm Green Lodging Certification. ST. PETE BEACH Ten residents of St. Pete Beach submitted applications to serve as interim mayor of St. Pete Beach until spring elections. The commission interviewed them in 15 minute intervals on July 26th to pick their next leader. Applicants included Deforrest Bailey, John Childers, John Michael Fleig, Colleen Horan, Sean Hurley, Alan Johnson, Fritz Kloepfel, Austin Piazza, Gregory Premer and Deborah Schechner. Tony Menendez, Owner/Operator of Chick-fil-A at St. Pete Beach has established a Go Fund Me Page for 5-year employee Will Yann. July 3, 2016, Will had a tragic accident that changed his life and put him out of work for an estimated 3 months. We ask for your help in any donations that you are able to provide for Will during this tough time. Please share this link with others and give Will a hand if you can. https://gofundme.com/2dsnpnj7 The first two blocks of Pass-a-Grille Way south of the Don CeSar got a temporary topcoat, providing a glimmer of hope for the distant future as an epic road restoration project continues. Two down, Thirty-two to

go. We urge ALL residents to keep the wonderful businesses of Pass-A-Grille in mind during the project. There are a dozen restaurants and a handful of great shops that need our business to survive, especially in the slower seasons. Jay Anderson, a Pass-A-Grille leader for decades has been attending progress meetings and reporting on the road project. A late June report included the following plea “The Saint Petersburg Yacht Club will not give St. Pete Beach an easement on their property (which means the newly underground electric will have to come out of the ground and there will be power poles the length of the yacht club property, then the power lines go back underground). If you know anyone at the yacht club who has a say, please talk to them. The last road construction progress meeting is August 4th at 3 pm, before Warren Webster, 1600 Pass-a-Grille Way, SPB 33706 closes for renovation until about November. An alternative meeting site has not been named. Email Jay to be added to his email list for project updates. dogjama@aol.com Robin Sollie to Serve on Visitor Services Committee - Sollie, has been

Financial Gurus & Other Unicorns Welcome back! Last time, we explored why you should avoid reacting to breaking news. Since then, investors got a real life lesson with Brexit. Today, we’ll explain why you’re also ill-advised to seek a financial guru to time markets or pick winning individual securities for you. To be sure, Brexit delivered a punishing blow not only to individual investors, but also to the vast majority of pros who tried to time the markets up to and following the Brexit event. The Proof Is in the Pudding Maybe you know of an extraordinary stock broker, fund manager, or TV personality who strikes you as being particularly astute. Should you turn to them for their latest market tips, instead of simply capturing market returns that are there for the taking? Let’s look at the historical record. If market gurus could be identified in

advance, then we should expect to see credible evidence of it, shouldn’t we? Not only is such data lacking, but the weight of evidence to the contrary is overwhelming. Star stock pickers & market timers often fail to survive, let alone persistently beat comparable market returns. A 2013 Vanguard Group analysis found that only about half of some 1,500 actively managed funds available in 1998 still existed by the end of 2012, and only 18% of the survivors outperformed their benchmarks. DFA found similar results in its independent analysis of 10-year mutual fund performance through 2013. Across the decades, a multitude of academic studies have scrutinized active manager performance and consistently found it lacking. • Among the earliest studies is Michael Jensen’s 1967 paper,

“The Performance of Mutual Funds in the Period 1945–1964.” Conclusion: “very little evidence that any individual fund was able to do significantly better than … expected from mere random chance.” • A more recent (2009) landmark study is Nobel Laureate Eugene Fama’s and Ken French’s, “Luck Versus Skill in the Cross Section of Mutual Fund Returns.” Conclusion: “the high costs of active management show up intact as lower returns to investors.” In the decades between, there have been as many as 100 similar studies demonstrating the futility of identifying guru stock pickers and/or market timers. Bottom Line: It’s a low success strategy. Take-Home Next time, we’ll begin discussing simple strategies that give you a high probability of investment success.

REAL ESTATE

JIM BEGGINS - Property Wizard,

Broker - CENTURY 21 Beggins Enterprises

Auction vs Traditional Real Estate Sales My monthly Property Wizard news letters called “Informed Confusion” are designed to unconfuse real estate information into ideas to help you make personal decisions regarding buying and selling barrier island real estate. Let’s discuss two selling methods; auctions vs traditional listings. Then a combination of the two methods. The Auction method of sale is based on an intensive promotional campaign over a specified period where the agent attempts to attract the attention of the largest number of the 'target' audience who will enter competitive bidding for the property on the day of auction more competition means a higher price and better conditions. When the property is sold at auction, the buyer does not have a 'cooling off' period a deposit is paid and the seller is legally obligated to close on the date specified in the auction conditions. However, using the Auction method, the property can also be sold prior to auction if an attractive offer is received, or after the auction as the agent negotiates with interested buyers. An important component of the Auction is the 'reserve price' which is the lowest price that the seller will accept on the day of auction - this price is generally established on the day before or on the

day of auction in consultation with the agent based on feedback and interest received during the promotional campaign. AUCTION METHOD • Focus is solely on your property. Generates the property's true market value with no upside price point limitation. • Auction provides a competitive atmosphere to promote and enhance buyers interest and final sales price. • Seller pays No Commission. Buyer pays. It’s called a “buyer’s premium”. • A sale date is dictated by the seller results in 30 to 60 days. • Property is sold "As-Is". • Property is sold without contingencies. • Closing rate high with auctions due to the large non-refundable deposit required by buyer. TRADITIONAL LISTING METHOD • Your property can be one of many advertised. • Upside price potential is limited. • No chance to negotiate up, just down. • A price reduction is typically needed to create buyer interest with a listed property. • Traditional listing commissions range from 5-10%. • A sale date is unknown- property can become stale on the market for months or even years - if it sells at all. • Property is typically scrutinized by

appraisers, pest control firms, home inspections companies, etc. • Contingencies are common with traditional listings. • Closings can be terminated or delayed with many properties because the deposit is too low and easily refundable. There is a way to combine the best of both selling methods to maximize your price without paying a commission. Best for high end properties. Contact me for more. All the best, Jim “property wizard” Beggins CENTURY 21Beggins Enterprises, with 13 offices and 400 agents serving Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee & Sarasota Counties. Since most opinions about real estate can be supported with facts, I will inform you to the best of my ability so you can unconfuse the facts to your personal advantage. A New Field For

The Miracle League Children The 4th Annual Tierra Verde Octoberfest is the highlight of the island’s fall season. This year we have committed to help the Miracle League raise the $100,000 it needs to refurbish their ten-year-old ball field, designed to provide opportunities for children with disabilities to play Miracle League baseball. Goals of the International Organization are to: •Promote community support and sponsorship of Miracle Leagues. •Promote the construction of special facilities that meet the unique needs of Miracle League players and their families.

The Miracle League needs a rehab for its St. Petersburg field as the individual rubber tiles come loose, the children trip and fall. What is needed is a solid rubber field, costing about $125,000. Grants and individual contributions are presently trying to fix this need. TVBP hopes to contribute as well. We cannot change or cure the medical issues life has dealt children with disabilities. What we can do is provide them with an opportunity to experience the joy and benefits that come from playing our National pastime baseball. For more information visit www.themiracleleague.net Oktoberfest is scheduled in Tierra Verde, from 4 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, October 15. Some Tampa Bay Ray’s will be there in a dunk tank because they believe in this cause and we need to raise the money for the children. (Retired Rays will participate if the team is in the World Series)

Mathew Walker, had the idea for The Miracle League field here, & it has become a reality.

We have established Sponsorship levels from $25 - friends to $75,000 for Angels, with banners, logo recognition and even Complex Naming Rights available for contributors in the highest categories. The local Miracle League operation has been a project of the Gulf Beaches Kiwanis Club, a very small group that seriously needs our help to be able to continue the wonderful work the group has accomplished over the past 10 years. A Miracle League ‘Go Fund Me’ page has been established where you can make an anonymous gift from home. Please open your hearts and your wallets, and lets tell these kids we want to play ball for them.

Where to Go for…

Bites, Bars & A Buzz The Beach Scene

by Joyce LaFray Today eating out is not necessarily "dining out." Very often the only choice may be to grab some good quality eats before the game, after a hard day's labor, or just because your have a craving for multiple "bites." Whether a restaurant menu announces "small plates," "appeteasers," or just plain old bar bites, there's a huge variety for us to choose from here in Tampa Bay. Happy hours, "earlybirds," and "daily specials" have become the affordable way to spread our wings and enjoy! Here's a selection of my favorite places where you will experience good food and drink at reasonable prices, without having to sit through the often painful process of formal dining. Since happy hours and specials change (even on a daily basis) is sure to check with the eatery before you venture out.

BLUE PARROT One of the hottest gathering places for good music, from rock to country. Often referred to as the "Cheers" of the beach. Typical happy hours are from 4-7 pm and include $2 domestic drafts and $2.25 well drinks. Not so easy to find, located on East Corey Avenue in a rambling but cozy building. 85 Coral Circle, St. Pete Beach 727-368-9619 BONGO BEACH BAR & GRILLE Especially popular with tourists, this busy bistro offers a variety of seaside fare including tropical libations and American style eats. 5250 Gulf Blvd, St. Pete Beach 888-207-1473 CASTILE RESTAURANT IN THE HOTEL ZAMORA The rooftop lounge in this new hotel is perhaps the best in the area for a spectacular view of the Gulf and about as romantic as it gets. Watch the sunset and chill for a few hours sampling their excellent tropical cocktails and fancy munchies. 3701 Gulf Blvd., St. Pete Beach 727-456-8660 CHILL RESTAURANT & BAR Lively eatery with a good selection of tapas and other favorites. The bar is perfectly positioned for watching the happy diners and listening to live music from the piano bar. Shrimp & Grits are excellent, as are the tropical libations. 357 Corey Ave., St. Pete Beach 727-360-2445 THE DRUNKEN CLAM Wings, wings and more wings. A favorite of beer lovers. Casual and just what you'd expect of a bar beach bar. Located across the street from the Gulf, so head out to the beach for a nice swim afterwards. 46 46th Ave, St. Pete Beach 727-360-1800

GATORS CAFÉ & SALOON If you're up for lots of live music (they have four stages) this bar is the place to hang and make a few new friends. Specials start at 11am opening, including $2 domestic bottled beers & drafts, $4 well drink. Waterfront views are spectacular. 12754 Kingfish Dr, Treasure Isl. 727-367-8951

GENNARO'S Having lived in Italy, I find this traditional trattoria to be one of the best on the beach. Okay, it's not on the water, but their handy location keeps prices more than reasonable. Try their thin-crust pizza and any of their authentic home-style dishes. Wines and beer reasonably prices. Opens noon for lunch, closed Mondays. 2004 Pass-a-Grille Way, Pass-a-Grille 727-360-0563 HURRICANE SEAFOOD RESTAURANT This waterfront icon in a three story building features rooftop and beach bars plus plenty of fresh seafood fare. The grouper sandwich is one of the most noted. Chef Gary Mayfield helps make a difference. Specials run from noon until six and include $2 domestic draft beers and $2.75 well drinks. 809 Gulf Way Pass-a-Grille 727-360-9558 Jimmy B's Beach Bar Located in The Beachcomber Resort Hotel ever since I can remember. Jimmy's has been the Margaritaville of the West Coast. You're welcome to dine in your bathing suit or bikini. Drafts are more than reasonable and the bartenders are a trip. Live music and a spacious deck overlooking the glorious Gulf. 6200 Gulf Blvd, St. Pete Beach 727-367-1902

OYSTER SHUCKER This lively place has been a fixture on the beach for years. Known for oysters, of course, but there's a good selection of beers and deep frieds. From 4-6 pm; get a dozen oysters for eight bucks, $2.50 domestic beers, $3 house wines and specific well cocktails. 650 Corey Ave, St. Pete Beach 727-363-4464 THE PEARL Chef Karim runs a tight ship here with a nice variety of Mediterranean and Continental bites. Go early for the specials. There's a small bar where you can sit but most fun is dining alfresco in the front patio. $5 martinis are one of the favorite specials with $10 - $15 Early Bird specials for two course meals. 163 107th Ave., Treasure Island 727-360-9151 RICKY T'S BAR & GRILLE Never mind that the proud founder of this rockin' establishment passed away while enjoying some of his popular wings. Great place to hang with good prices on fried foods and lots of music and action. Always busy, so get there early. 10601 Gulf Blvd, Treasure Island 727-363-7425 R BAR Having lived on Sunset Beach for four years, this den of deliciousness was always one of my favorite go-to places. Excellent beer prices and good chow; they even include live music at specific times and plenty of party folk. 245 108th Ave, Treasure Island 727-367-3400 RUMFISH GRILL It's world-famous artist Guy Harvey territory with excellent seafood and a lively outdoor bar. Graze on the luscious appetizers and marvel at the amazing snorkel aquarium. Nightly specials in the bar. 6000 Gulf Blvd, St. Pete Beach ……… 727-329-1428

Prices are reasonable, the seafood is fresh and you can dock your boat outside, and enjoy waterfront dining. What more can you ask for? 2007 Pass-A-Grille Way, Pass-a-Grille 727-360-3706

THE WHARF RESTAURANT Located on the way to downtown Pass-A-Grille, this go-to restaurant does a great job preparing seafood nibbles and meals. It opens early with a good beer selection and makes it ever better with the casual seafood view. 2001 Pass-A-Grille Way, Pass-A-Grille 727-367-9469

SELENE The Newest Happy Hour on the beach features a gourmet happy hour menu priced $5-$7 with a good house wine and craft beers at $4 from 4-7 pm Sunday-Friday. Try the pita points served with your choice of three delectable housemade spreads for just $6 or the best grilled octopus south of Tarpon Springs. 4945 Gulf Blvd, St. Pete Beach 727-317-2064

VIP LOUNGE & MEXICAN RESTAURANT I've been going to this popular restaurant and oh-so casual hang out for over 30 years now. Order an assortment of their menu; the wet burrito is a winner. Around 4 pm there are specials on all beers starting around $3. 18625 Gulf Blvd.,Treasure Island 727-360-5062

SHELLS SEAFOOD RESTAURANT ST. PETE BEACH Okay, so it's just another seafood chain across from the Gulf. Surprisingly, this is one of the best of the Shells chain, prices are reasonable and include lots of friendly young servers who serve well and fast. Shrimp entrees are the best. 7081 Gulf Blvd, St. Pete Beach 727-826-0729 SLOPPY JOES An upscale version of the iconic Key West bar, this nicely decorated bar serves a variety of good food with somewhat hefty prices, though worth the tariff. Good fresh seafood and Gulf views make it worth the trip. Have a Daiquiri in honor of the old fisherman. 10650 Gulf Blvd, Treasure Island 727-367-1600 THE TOASTED MONKEY If you don't mind the sound level, this favorite of the millennial generation is the place to get "toasted monkey around a bit". Join in one of the ongoing volleyball games and eharmony type of stuff. 6110 Gulf Blvd, St. Pete Beach 727-360-5800

Their wine list is always current and one of the best in town. 204 Beach Dr. NE, St. Petersburg 727-895-5375 THE BURG BAR & GRILL My favorite bites here are the falloff-the-bone baby backs with a slightly spicy sauce, just enough to make you want to engage in several of their craft beers. Mostly stool seating, but there are a few tables out back. 1752 Central Ave, St. Petersburg 727-894-2874

THE CANOPY IN THE BIRCHWOOD The highlight, of course, is the penthouse bar which gives you the best view of the city. Sip a tropical cocktail while lounging in a cozy cabana. Beer or sangria makes for the perfect go-with. 663 Central Ave., St. Petersburg 727-498-8749 CROWLEY'S DOWNTOWN My first name, "Joyce" is the last name of my Irish grandfather, so I'm always in the mood for an Irish-themed tavern featuring pub grub & lots of beers on tap. Authentic Irish recipes and plenty of satisfied customers. 269 Central Ave., St. Petersburg 727-821-1111 EMERALD BAR This Irish den of delightful conversations and cheap beers has a very casual vibe and once in awhile has some live music. HAWKERS It's Asian heaven. Lots of specials from 12-2 pm and 3-6 pm. Best bites include a luscious roti with dipping sauce, summer rolls, five spice chicken and pork, and chicken wings done a half dozen ways. Recipes are from a variety of regional areas. Great beer and wine specials and an enthusiastic serving staff. Loud but worth the visit. 1235 Central Ave., St. Petersburg 1-844-EAT-HAWK THE MILL Okay, it's a mite pricey but how many bites do you really need. Order a selection of "First Plates" and then graze away. There's also cheese and charcuterie you may have never tasted the likes of. eople have been asking me about Selene, Fresh Fare & Bar, the newest fine dining restaurant at 4945 Gulf Blvd. in St. Pete Beach. Until now, I’ve typically responded that they were too new to review. Then I tell them I promised Joyce LaFray she would be our exclusive PN restaurant critic. We’ve generally tried to give new restaurants a while to get their systems in place before a reviewanyway. For Selene, we need not have waited. After a few personal experiences for drinks and happy hour apps, dinner and Sunday Brunch, I would have to say they are easily the most impressive new arrival yet in 2016 on the barrier islands of West Florida. An online search tells me I am not unique.

They’ve already got 4.5 stars on TripAdvisor, Face Book and Yelp. There is also a fun review on ‘the Piglet Parade’, a really interesting Foodie blog from Indian Shores.

Happy Hour - 4-7 pm, finds an elegant ‘cheers’ kind of atmosphere with $4 house wines, wells and craft beers, and domestics $3. The real deal are the gourmet appetizers at Happy Hour prices. The choice of three spreads with pita points for $6 is a great vegetarian option. For cheese lovers there’s Spinach Pie and Fennel Rolls with Feta. The Grilled Octopus is the ‘best ever’ according to a number of experienced Greek diners. I would have to agree. Renee thought the Quail appetizer was delicious. On the happy hour menu they are only $7 (the highest price on the menu) and it is enough for several people to taste the delicious tender grilled flavors. A new local ‘Foodie’ magazine rated Selene the top new place in Tampa Bay. These days I put more weight on personal reviews I see online,

particularly TripAdvisor. As I am writing this article, the headlines within the past month say: “Great Place. Great Food,” “Must Try” “Great End to a Great Vacation.” Tampa Tribune’s Food Writer wrote a glowing review and Creative Loafing predicted they would survive due to a dearth of good places to eat on the beach. I personally feel the beach is just a part of a movement toward better, healthier dining and Selene is a part of it. Selene is unique in many ways. Its central, non-resort location, huge parking lot, and plenty of seating, both indoors and out. And the food is remarkable! ......

Garden in a Glass Jon Rector, editor of Piglet Parade (a blog, primarily of local restaurants) reported on a March visit to Selene at happy hour in an online review where Selene was highly acclaimed. It appears to be a non-commercial literary endeavor. Jon lives in Indian Shores and dines with his bride,“the Belle of Gulf Boulevard”. Here he arrives at Selene. “Taylor, the high priestess of the Selene bar, promptly presented us with food and adult beverage menus.”The cocktail menu has a number of very interesting choices, but my buds of taste were salivating over the Garden in a Glass. My bride chose wisely, a slightly sweet Sunrise Sangria with Sauvignon Blanc, Square 1 Vodka, St. Germaine Elderflower liquor, rose water, cucumber, lime and rose buds.”His appetizer comments are with his photos.

White Sangria

“...About the best octopus I have ever eaten”

Nick’s restaurants have always been the places to meet and to be seen. Where you could count on good food, n a clean setting, where they go out of there way to make sure you are completely satisfied. The menu prices may seem high by local standards but are very fair for the quality of food being offered. It ’s fresh fare, after all. If you are in the mood for seafood, meat, or pasta or a recipe especially of Greek or Mediteranean origin you can order it with confidence at Selene. It will be top quality and it will be delicious, guaranteed. Your waiter will be able to suggest what is best on any particular night to satisfy the taste you are

Chef Nicola Karvelas brings his Greek recipes and New York experience to Selene under the watchful eye of Nick Skiadiotis. Nick was already a successful Manhattan restauranteur in 1986 when he stayed at the Don CeSar in St. Pete Beach for the first time. He has owned local restaurants ever since. That may account for the overwhelming local support we’ve witnessed for this seemingly new fine dining alternative in St. Pete Beach. If you are a familiar face on the beach, “We tried smoked eggplant, yellow split pea mousse, it is unlikely you will not see someone and hummus. All three spreads were creamy and delicious. More pita arrived when we ran low.” you know at the bar or in the - Jon Rector dining room. 30

CONSTRUCTION

by Tom Smith, Contractor - GHD Construction Services, Inc.

Minor Storm Scare…. This Time! After the relatively minor Tropical Storm Colin breezed through Pinellas on June 7th, my phone rang off the hook from beach residents that again had water enter their homes due to only about 5” of rain and a high moon tide. What will happen when so much as a Category 1 storm hits our beautiful beach communities? We will all be evacuated, but in reality that is the easy part. Most residents living in homes below the designated flood elevations will come back to the heartbreak of flooded houses. They will have to wait in very long lines for their insurance agents to assess the damage, and contractors to bid on the remodeling and schedule construction with crews that will be overworked and expensive. That was the conclusion of the customers that called us last month and decided to build now to the new FEMA standards and get a home with all the amenities offered today. The feeling is that once a storm ends and they are allowed to return to their homes, they will have only to do yard cleanup and not have a one to two year heartbreak of starting over, competing against hundreds or thousands of homeowners facing the

same predicament. Unfortunately, the housing stock along the beautiful Pinellas beaches is very old, many constructed in the 1950’s and 1960’s, and none have the proper elevation to weather a tough storm, much less have impact windows and all of the structural components that come with new home today. Pinellas County is still waiting for the new revised FEMA flood elevations to be released by the federal government. It seems very certain that these elevations will be increased for all homes along the beach communities in Pinellas County. With global warming being a reality and multiple predictions that our oceans will rise throughout the years, FEMA will most certainly protect the federal tax dollars that have to be spent when severe storms or hurricanes occur. Believe me, I am not an alarmist. While we are very busy now with new construction projects, we have more capacity. Each homeowner must figure out for themselves to either “Live for Today” or be proactive and build a new home of their choice now. In addition to getting a new home now with all the updated bells and whistles, you get the security of a home constructed with the

stringent new Florida Building Codes, very energy efficient and no deferred maintenance. If you decide to investigate the cost of a new home, find a builder that you are comfortable with and discuss prices and options. Don’t believe that every home has to cost over $500,000. We are presently constructing new homes to replace existing housing stock with prices as low as $240,000 along the beach communities. That of course includes each home being raised above the required FEMA elevation, with a full 2 – 4 car garage below the living area. Although more expensive than homes built on grade in non-flood prone areas, the benefit is all the extra room for cars, trucks, boats and storage that the older beach homes do not have today. You could have peace of mind, eliminate the threat of flooding, a new home with all the modern amenities of today and have all that extra room. We have all become comfortable with the lack of major storms since 2004, the year in which 3 hurricanes hit Florida. Just maybe upgrading your home is worth considering now before the next storm.

REAL PROPERTY

Travels Through Real Estate Law BY THOMAS A. BRODERSEN, ESQ.

Do It Yourself? It’s a modern trend: DIY There is so much wonderful information on the internet these days that a sophisticated person willing to take the time and do some reading should be able to save money by doing so many things for themselves. There are also things you don’t want to do yourself. You really don’t want to perform a tonsillectomy on yourself, no matter how much you’ve read and studied. You don’t want to draft your own deeds, either. The small amount of money you save by not paying a real estate attorney to help may leave you in one of two situations: first, losing sleep at night worrying that the

instrument doesn’t accomplish what you needed it to do, or, perhaps worse, not losing sleep because it didn’t occur to you to wonder about it, and therefore, not learning the deed is defective until it’s much too late to fix it. But let’s talk about some of the things you CAN do for yourself. You can incorporate your business, or form an LLC. You don’t even need to pay Legal Zoom or any other service for assistance – you can just go on the Florida Sunbiz website, and do it directly online. You can file generic Articles of Incorporation (which are entirely sufficient for most purposes). After that, you’ll need to do some more

reading or talk to your accountant about getting a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN), i.e., tax ID and then filing a Small Business Election form, to be an S Corp (taxed like a partnership), rather than a standard C Corp, which means double taxation. You can also get a great deal of (public records) information on people you deal with in business, real estate and other transactions. The Pinellas County Clerk of Court lets you see a list of all court cases a person or company has been involved in, from traffic tickets, divorces and lawsuits to criminal felonies. It’s great to know who you’re dealing with. You can also find records of all

licensed service providers, at MyFloridaLicense.com, including disciplinary history. Who wouldn’t want to know about that? If you’re looking to buy (or rent) real estate, you can find a great deal of information on the property at the Property Appraiser’s website. This includes property features, real estate taxes, a PDF of the last deed recorded and other useful information. Once you have read what’s available online, you can sometimes go forward on your own, just getting a question or two answered by an attorney, accountant or other professional. That makes it great to have a relationship with such people.

The scope of the nearly $11 million in new City Centre projects was bigger than some residents felt was prudent - mostly concerning the traffic and infrastructure impact. However, the investment that Madeira Beach made more than two years ago (Paradise News, March 2014 issue) is already paying back significant dividends. 36

More than $1 million in improvements to Archibald Park, including a complete Snack Shack makeover and takeover by a new concessionaire, has brought in significant visitor dollars and added beach meter parking revenue. Have you Been to John’s Pass Lately? While many of the shops cater mostly to visitors on vacation, some of them aim to do business with locals. Bill Brawner’s Bronze Lady, for example, is one of the senior businesses in the Pass, offering Jewelry, Hand Bags, Shoes, Accessories and Gifts. Bill’s wife, Carol Brawner, a downtown business owner offering casual to fine furniture and décor for the island lifestyle at Bronze Lady Home Furnishings, next to the Madeira Beach Post office on Madeira Way. The restaurants of the Pass depend a lot on locals in the off-season. The new Madeira Beach Craft Brewery & Pub sits above the Winery on the main street. There’s the Friendly Fisherman (managed by Leverocks) under the lighthouse near the parking structure, DeLosa’s Pizza, and a soon to open Irish Pub, (where CAFÉ ALMA was briefly) Nadine F. from Tampa expresses on TripAdvisor the sentiments of many of us. ”John's Pass is for the tourists but I LOVE to bring my out of town guests here. Ok, I love any excuse to come here.” The shops are fun to browse and any restaurant on the water is my favorite restaurant. Shops include T-shirts, shells, alligator heads and anything else touristy you can imagine. Restaurants include Bubba Gump, Hooters and a few seafood places. Take a stroll by Kilwin’s Sweet Shop and enjoy the amazing smells of freshly made waffle cones and fudge.

Sculley’s & The Hut

Two of the most popular spots seem to be Sculley’s and the Hut. Sculley’s has the prime position on the John’s Pass Boardwalk, offering waterfront views while dining outside or in the air conditioning. Sculley’s offers outdoor seating on their waterfront deck and in a rustic air-conditioned indoor space, decorated like a fishing lodge. A special early bird pairing menu and specials are offered daily. The children’s menu features youngster’s favorites from Mac & Cheese, to Fish & Chips and Chicken Nuggets for under $8. Lunch is served 11-4. Early Bird Pairing and dinner are served 4-10 daily. Are you craving mouth watering, seafood and refreshing tropical drinks in an waterfront setting?

Lunch & Dinner Menu items are offered daily. Allow their legendary Monster Fish Sandwich to redefine your lunch experience. At dinner, awaken your taste buds with our “School of Fish”– three portions of fresh local fish – each served with 3 different sauces or indulge in their “East meets West” crab stuffed Jumbo Shrimp with a half-pound Certified Angus Beef Sirloin Steak.

Tripping @ Madeira Beach by Nanette Wiser

Madeira Beach gets more fun by the day. Sugar sweet sand, a new concert pavilion and community center, lots of annual events with music and during season, farmers’ markets, art/crafts shows and bike enthusiasts mingle in the closed off street between the Oar House & the CVS. Take a walk with me around this quirky beach town and you’ll fall in love with its easy access to Tyrone... Downtown… & North Beachs.

Shop! From John’s Pass boutiques to downtown Madeira Beach shops, I’ve discovered all kinds of gifts and finds. City Bazaar sells $10 jewelry for those who like Charming Charlie or Claire’s, The Brass Lady’s accessories and Pandora are the best around, Windworks’ kites thrill kids of all ages and the vintage shops next to Brown Boxer yield goodies and treasures from clothes to lamps and books. Jeff the Jeweler sells new and estate jewelry while Bronze Lady Home Furnishings can help you make your house look like a page from Coastal Living. Eat, Drink & Be Merry! Usually, I end up at Redington’s Conch Republic or Treasure Island’s Middle Grounds. But thanks to this story, I’ve now discovered some new favorites. Angry Pepper, 4330 Duhme Rd.: Over near the American Legion, this legendary smokehouse serves the best pulled pork in town and sweet potato fries. Dozens of craft beers on tap and a beachy décor plus view perfect for kicking it on a weekday afternoon. The Brown Boxer Pub & Grille, 15000 Madeira Way: Great drinks, good servers,

live music and yummy sandwiches (buffalo chicken), stone crab soup and tacos (fish). The key lime martini and margaritas go down smoothe. Mad Beach Craft Brewing, 12945 Village Blvd.: Flights of craft beer, good eats, dartboards, pool tables, air hockey and big screen TVs make for family fun with blues and other live music most Friday-Saturday nights 8 pm. Orange Blossom Honey Wheat Ale, Imperial Sweet Potato Ail, Grapefruit Cider and other frisky brews beckon, meshing nicely with Caribbean Short Rips, Pirate Shrimp and Triple Threat Sliders. Passionate about what they do, brewers Matthew Powers & Alex Garcia, work closely with Chef Tyson Williams in coming up with unique twists on traditional styles as well as dabbling in the normal realm of IPAs and Lagers that play well with a brew pub menu like no other. Mario’s Ristorante, 14995 Gulf Blvd.: Next to Daiquiri Deck, this family gem serves homemade past, linguine with clams and lobster ravioli using only the freshest ingredients. Sweet Brewnette, 13999 Gulf Blvd.: For java jive and breakfast, this cute little café features mimosas, banana bread, caprese grilled cheesy and yummy homemade soups.

Still Got Room? Other places I enjoyed were tourist fave’s Scullys, The Hut Bar & Grill, The Friendly Fisherman, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. & The Boardwalk Grill in John’s Pass; Dockside Dave’s for the fish & chips; Thai Star Sushi Bar for crab Rangoon or sushi; Gulf Bistro’s salmon and lobster bisque; Lisa’s Café for the grouper Oscar and espresso-crusted filet; Walt’z Fish Shak for the grouper and the Mad Beach Fish House’s Bloody Mary bar and music. For music, Bamboo Beach Bar & Grill or Daiquiri Shak Raw Bar & Grille are fun and the bands rock the house. If you want a pizza, DeLosa’s garlic nuts and pies are good, and soon, Slyce will open next to Publix for those who love gourmet pizza, boutique wines, craft beers and cool cocktails, especially the Greek pizza and bruschetta. Before or after a day at Mad Beach, stop in at The Old Snack Shack for burgers/dogs and fries; the Candy Kitchen for ice cream and South Beach Bar & Grille or The Oar House for cheap eats and drinks. Holiday Isle Marina Project The City of Madeira Beach was counting on a renaissance when they hired Shane Crawford as City Manager. Together with Mayor Travis Palladeno, a retired charter captain who was re-elected in 2014 with one of the highest margins in Florida election history, the pair are leading the city into the 21st Century. Low interest rates and creative financing has kept miliage unchanged. Triggered by the city’s investment in itself, a time of change has arrived. While two large new developments are being resisted by some as too much, too fast, the developments are proposed where the densest development ought to be. Madeira Beach is blessed to have two local developers behind the projects. They both have shown a love for the community and have made significant investments here. The first major new project announced is Jim Holton’s Holiday Isle Marina project.

The marina plan proposes 150 hotel rooms, 122 condohotel rooms, 68 residential units in three multi-family buildings, a restaurant and 96 boat slips. Each building has beencarefully sited for the most advantageous view and to minimize intrusions within the site. The marina will create an activity center for residents and visitors alike while extra parking should alleviate traffic from tourists looking for a place to park, and the added green space will create a pleasant environment.

A planned new 5,000 squarefoot destination restaurant will invite boaters from across the region to visit Madeira Beach. The ease of docking at the Marina will make "going to lunch or dinner by boat" a truly pleasant adventure. The adjoining hotels, with shuttles to the beach, a pedestrian walkway to enjoy the beach life of Madeira Beach. Proximity to the new Town Center development, just steps away and direct access from the city’s main connection to the mainland makes this a good plan. You can also walk to the 911 Memorial.

For more information, visit MovingMadeira Forward.com. The Holiday Isle Marina will make Madeira Beach a true seaside destination unlike any other city in the Tampa Bay region. The plan is pedestrian friendly, with a way to walk under the bridge. Bike-sharing, water taxis and extra trolley service will help minimize traffic impacts.

In addition to creating a signature gateway development for Madeira Beach, the Marina and the Town Center projects will significantly increase the city's ad valorem tax base, the sales tax and hotel room tax which will ensure the city will have even more funds to keep taxes low and increase infrastructure and economic development.

Madeira Beach Town Center Project Madeira Beach Development Co., LLC, proposes to develop Madeira Beach Town Center, a new mixed-use project on two adjacent parcels, 4.5 acres with 1,100 feet of Intracoastal Waterway frontage and a 2.1 acre triangular shape directly across Gulf Boulevard from Archibald Park. The City has essentially two major retail and entertainment areas. At the south end of the community is the hugely popular tourist destination of John’s Pass Village and Boardwalk, a retail and entertainment district in the style of a quaint fishing village located on the Boca Ciega Bay waterfront at John’s Pass, which provides direct access to the Gulf of Mexico. The second is located in the City’s downtown area at the northern end of the community at the entrance to the City from the mainland. This second area, known as the Town Center, includes; City Hall, local library, the City’s fire station, a recreation complex, R.O.C. Park; a children’s memorial park and entertainment destination; various local retail and entertainment businesses, the municipal marina and Archibald Beach Park, the community’s major public beach access.

The planned development includes the following components: On the Waterfront Parcel • One 150 - 180 room hotel with Bay & Gulf views, and approximately 5,000 square feet of retail on the ground floor. • A public marina with 43 boat slips and a 5,000 square foot commercial /retail building with dedicated surface parking. • Two mid-rise, 45-unit residential condominium buildings, each with their own dedicated parking, and each having Bay views. On the Triangle Parcel • One 200 - 250 room hotel on top of up to 40,000 square feet of commercial/retail space and a parking structure providing both dedicated parking and public parking. This structure would have both Gulf and Bay views and would be directly across Gulf Boulevard from the City’s main beachfront park.

The hotel would be connected to the beachfront park by an elevated air bridge across Gulf Boulevard providing direct access from the public beach without crossing the busiest street in the City. The City of Madeira Beach previously adopted a Town Center Special Area Plan that encourages the development of operating businesses that create jobs and tourism traffic. The Madeira Beach Town Center project was designed specifically to meet the City’s objectives and complies with the Town Center Special Area Plan in all respects. The development site is particularly conducive to hotel, retail and condominium development, because of its proximity to both the beach access and other community recreational and entertainment amenities.

The Madeira Beach Town Center development parcels are located at the gateway into the City from the mainland. ParadiseNewsFL.com | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2016

BONNIE & STEVE RAFTING ON SNAKE RIVER

From Yellowstone to Everglades National Park Service Marks Centennial STORY & PHOTOS by STEVE TRAIMAN Since YELLOWSTONE was made our nation’s – and the world’s – first National Park on March 3, 1872, by decree of President U.S. Grant under the newly passed Antiquities Act of Congress, we now have more than 400 National Parks and Monuments. All are cared for by the National Park Service, celebrating the 100 th Anniversary of its founding in 1916 with month-long events this August across America. Our own EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK was established in May, 1934, by President Franklin Roosevelt to protect the quickly vanishing Everglades. It was dedicated in 1947. Your Feature Writer and my wife Bonnie kicked off an early celebration with a recent 1,155-mile Caravan Tour by luxury motor coach. Our long-anticipated trip included Mt. Rushmore, Little Bighorn Battlefield and Crazy Horse National Monuments, as well as Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.

FAMOUS OLD FAITHFUL

CRAZY HORSE & MT. RUSHMORE Our tour began in Rapid City, SD, with a visit first to the CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL, started in 1948 by sculptor KORCZAK ZIOLOKOWSKI with only the face and top of his arm completed to date. Dedicated to the Lakota Sioux Chief credited with the Little Bighorn strategy that defeated Custer’s 7th Cavalry, It is being completed by son Nick and other family members. It is supported only by private donations to the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation.

Mt. Rushmore’s famous quartet of presidential faces – WASHINGTON, JEFFERSON, TEDDY ROOSEVELT & LINCOLN was started in 1927 by sculptor GUTZON BORGLUN and completed in 1941, with its 75th anniversary celebrated this year. A rare treat was on the half-mile Presidential Trail walk “up close and personal” to the monument where we heard a talk by an NPS Ranger who is the grandson of famed Chief Red Cloud. He told of his grandfather’s trip to Washington with four other Sioux Elders in the late 1870’s to request more food, education and health aid for the Indian tribes on the reservations. He also related a moving legend from his tribe of Mother Nature and her plea to share what you have with others, and to safeguard the environment for future generations. On our way to the Little Bighorn we passed through Lead, CO, where one of the world’s richest gold mines operated 8,000 feet deep from 1938 to 2009 and now is a major government underground research facility. Just across the Wyoming border we passed the famous Vore Buffalo Jump where remains of more than 20,000 bison were found. Over 600 years, they were driven by Indians to their death to provide food and hides. We made a side trip to the imposing Devil’s Tower, a 60-million-yearold, 865-foot-high magma volcanic eruption rising 1,280 feet above the Belle Fourche River. Sacred to the Lakota Sioux among other tribes, it was designated our First National Monument by President Teddy Roosevelt in 1906. Crossing into Montana, we went through the Crow Nation, our fifth largest reservation and home to over 12,000 tribal members. Crow scouts were with General Custer at Little Bighorn, where a stone obelisk monument erected in 1881 on Last Stand Hill includes the names of Custer and all who died with him on June 26, 1876. Stone markers also identify the fallen Cavalrymen, Sioux and Cheyenne in the adjoining small Cemetery, and elsewhere on the grounds. It took 122 years for the more impressive Indian Memorial to open in 2003. Dominated by a “Spirit Gate” outline sculpture of “Spirit Warriors” with a view to the Cavalry obelisk, the circular series of walls highlights the tribes involved in the battle, and Chiefs Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse who led their 1,500-plus warriors.

YELLOWSTONE HIGHLIGHTS Our trip to Yellowstone began with a drive past the Beartooth Mountains along the scenic Yellowstone River, where famed Chief Joseph and his Nez Perce tribe in 1877 fled toward Canada. U.S. troops caught up 40 miles from the border, where the Chief surrendered with his famous quote, “Our flight has ended; I will fight no more!” We also crossed the historic 45th parallel, halfway between the Equator and North Pole. Yellowstone is more than 2 million square miles, mostly in Wyoming, plus parts of Idaho and Montana. Much of the Park is in the Caldera Basin left after a giant volcanic eruption more than 600 million years ago! We entered the park through the imposing Roosevelt Arch. During our two days we saw many Pronghorn (antelope), Elk and and wild Bison, as well as Osprey and a Grizzly Bear. Later in the trip we added sightings of a Black Bear and a pair of Bald Eagles. Yellowstone was first administered briefly by private interests, with the U.S. Army taking over in the 1880’s, until the National Park Service was established in 1916, officially taking charge in 1918. Our first stop was at Mammoth Hot Springs, where we saw the Palette - terraced volcanic geyser pools - and two former eruptions, Devil’s Thumb and Liberty Cap mounds, as well as three Elk bucks drinking at the pools. We then stopped at the Calcite Springs overlook and rode up over Dunraven Pass with many switchbacks past 8,859-foot-high Mount Washburn.

The next day began with a local guide and a visit to the stunning Fountain Paint Pots – bubbling “sulphurterra” gas pots, past many Lodgepole Pines with “white bobby sox feet” affected by silica in the large Celestine Pool. The historic fountain-type Castle Geyser erupts four times daily for more than 20 minutes, a stunning display equaling that of Old Faithful, a cone-type geyser. On our way to the “Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone,” we first stopped at the 109-foot-high Upper falls, then to Canyon Village Visitors Center for lunch. The Canyon, estimated at 160,000 years old, is dominated by the scenic 308-foot-high Lower Falls. From Artist Point we saw the top annual flow of 64,000 gallons per minute. We stayed two nights at the historic Old Faithful Inn, designed by architect Richard Reamer and opened in 1904. it is constructed with Lodgepole Pine logs, with a 50-ton native stone fireplace rising 108 feet to the roof of the main lobby. We had ringside seats for the almost clockwork 90-minute eruption of Old Faithful Geyser, whose stunning display lasts about 10 minutes. A boardwalk takes visitors past Old Faithful to see a number of other geysers and volcanic pools.

GRAND TETON & OREGON TRAIL Leaving Yellowstone, we crossed the 8,279-foot-high Continental Divide three times, traveling along the John D. Rockefeller Jr. highway into Grand Teton National Park. Established in 1929, the park includes 32,000 acres acquired quietly by Rockefeller and donated to the U.S. Another tour highlight was at Moose, WY, where we used four large rubber rafts for a stunning trip - with a bag lunch - down the Snake River. The 1,181-mile course starts in Washington State and ends in the Columbia River. Our local guide pointed out the sights that included many beaver dams, Canada Geese, Muscovy Ducks, a very fat Raccoon and a Moose cow with her young calf. It was on to an overnight stay in Jackson, WY, a noted artist center with its outstanding Museum of Wildlife Art. The town square has four stunning Elk Antler Horn arches and a notable Million Dollar Cowboy Bar with horse saddle bar stools. En route to Salt Lake City, we stopped at the historic Oregon /California Trail Center in Montpelier, ID, built and maintained by all-volunteer local costumed hosts. They took us through a simulated four to five-month, 2,000-mile trip that more than 500,000 made from Independence, MO, to Oregon City, OR, from 1838 to 1914. The lure was a free 120-acre land deed – to both men and women from the U.S. government. Our last stop in SLC included a brief but notable guided tour of historic Temple Square by four Mormon Church sisters. Included was the stunning Mormon Tabernacle with its 11,000-plus Pipe Organ & where the 325-member Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehearses and performs their weekly Sunday morning TV show as they’ve been doing since 1929, originally on radio of course. Our memorable eight-day tour took us back through millions of years of history. Our visits to some of our most notable National Parks and Monuments reminded us continuously how important are these treasured lands, and for all of us to help preserve them forever. Everglades National Park: $5 Billion Restoration! STORY by STEVE TRAIMAN Our own Everglades National Park protecting the southern 20% of the original Everglades was established in May, 1934, by President Franklin Roosevelt to protect the quickly vanishing Everglades. It was dedicated in 1947 as massive canal building projects were initiated across South Florida. With over 1.5 million acres (2.35 million square miles), Everglades National Park is the largest tropical wilderness in the U.S., the largest wilderness of any kind east of the Mississippi River and is visited on average by one million people each year. It’s the third-largest National Park in the lower 48 states after Death Valley and Yellowstone. It has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site and a Wetland of International Importance, one of only three locations in the world to appear on all three lists. The Park is the most significant breeding ground for tropical wading birds in North America, contains the largest mangrove ecosystem in the western hemisphere and is home to 36 threatened or protected species including the Florida panther, the American crocodile and the West Indian manatee. It supports 350 species of birds, 300 species of fresh and saltwater fish, 40 species of mammals and 50 species of reptiles. The majority of South Florida's fresh water, which is stored in the Biscayne Aquifer, is recharged in the Park. Although most U.S. national parks preserve unique geographic features, Everglades was the first created to protect a fragile ecosystem. The Everglades are a network of wetlands and forests fed by a river flowing one-quarter mile per day out of Lake Okeechobee, southwest into Florida Bay. Serious damage to the Everglades occurs when heavy rains cause the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to open the Lake’s spillways, with millions of gallons of heavily polluted water flowing downriver through the Glades. In November 2014, Floridians overwhelmingly voted “yes” on Amendment I, allocating up to a third of the state’s excise tax revenue for Everglades restoration. Funding is now guaranteed in the state constitution and Governor Rick Scott said he plans to assemble $5 billion for Everglades restoration efforts over the next 20 years. This current fiscal year, $200 million will be used on projects. If newly mandated funds are available and used properly on the right projects, then efforts to restore the natural flow of water in the Everglades and protect the fragile ecosystem will be met with success and that’s good news for all of us. {Editor’s Note: Special thanks to the Florida Dept. of Environmental Protection and the U.S. National Park Service for background and statistics.) For Clyde Butcher Parks Are His Stage Clyde Butcher photos courtesy of St. Petersburg Museum of History

By Nanette Wiser Like the national parks, Clyde Butcher is a living legend – the Ansel Adams of our times. Working from his studio in Venice Florida or the Keys, this evocative photographer captures our disappearing wilderness in his breathtaking art. Lucky for St. Pete folks, his current exhibit of Cuba photos runs through September 30 at the St. Petersburg Museum of History in Downtown St. Petersburg. 50

Cuba, The Natural Beauty Commissioned by the United Nations to create a portfolio of the mountainous lands of Cuba, Clyde Butcher set out on three week-long expeditions into unfamiliar lands. He explored the island country’s varied geographic regions, from the Sierra Maestra Mountains in Cuba’s eastern Granma province, to the southern coast between Manzanillo and Santiago de Cuba. His travel took him to Baracoa in the northeast, the southern waterfalls of the Serra de San Juan, and the mogotes of the west in the Piñah del Rio region. While taking photographs for the Conference for Sustainable Habitat of the Mountains, Clyde thought about being part of an event changing history for the better, and enthusiastically saw an opportunity to make a positive difference. His photography transcends political boundaries, challenging us to work together to protect natural places across the globe.

FISHING

Hubbard’s Marina written by: Captain Mark & Dylan Hubbard WWW.HubbardsMarina.com Hashtag it: #HubbardsMarina “If you’re TOO BUSY to go FISHING, You’re just TOO BUSY!” - Salty Sol Fleishman

Fishing report Tarpon have recently been hanging out inside Johns Pass, in the dock lights around the pass at night and rolling inside the pass during the day. Many are caught from the jetty with live ladyfish. Steven Cantrell, from St. Petersburg, caught a handful of monster snook under the Hubbard’s Marina main dock free lining live pigfish and pinfish. The flounder have been biting well inside the pass. This past week we had a kayak guided fishing trips that hauled in nice flounder and trout along the grass flats inside Johns Pass. The live bait is still hanging around the pass as well and the water has been super clear on incoming tides. Near shore-Triple tail and cobia are out in Force! Frankie Henry caught a monster cobia flat lining a medium pinfish from an all day at Hubbard’s Marina. We also caught two other big ones but unfortunately they popped off the hook before we could gaff them successfully. Grey snapper, seabass and porgies have been steady. Red grouper and

hogfish have been found in deeper nearshore waters. Offshore- Hubbards 44-hour full moon trip in July got some truly monster kingfish (60lb) on the troll out. The mangrove bite was solid all night long with big mangroves coming up all night long. Most experienced anglers were limited out or nearly limited out by day break. The daytime brought a surprisingly steady mangrove snapper pick along with some thick red grouper. The kingfish bite sparked up again just before sunset allowing us to haul in even more of these monster smokers. Overall, it was a great trip with nice grouper, snapper, porgies, and big kingfish caught too! Check out our latest videos on Facebook as we have been doing

He explored the island country’s varied geographic regions, from the Sierra Maestra Mountains in Cuba’s eastern Granma province, to the southern coast between Manzanillo and Santiago de Cuba. His travel took him to Baracoa in the northeast, the southern waterfalls of the Sierra de San Juan, and the mogotes of the west in the Piñar del Rio region.

While taking photographs for the Conference for the Sustainable Habitat of the Mountains, Clyde thought about being part of an event changing history for the better, and enthusiastically saw an opportunity to make a positive difference. Treasured Tales by Julian Fant

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE SHARK KIND everal issues ago, our "Treasured Tales" column recounted boyhood encounters with several of the potentially deadly snakes of northeast Florida, which resulted in "near misses" during various trips into what was commonly referred to as "the scrub." However, there were also other areas far removed from the swamps and hammocks of inland Florida which held the very real possibility of serious injury or death from a marine predator......sharks. During fishing trips with my dad and older brother, several close encounters are still etched in my memory.

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2016 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

I foolishly speared a large bull shark with a crude "gig" while stalking flounder off the Spanish fort in St. Augustine. I was towed quite a distance underwater before freeing my wrist. On another occasion, my brother and I were fishing in the surf off St. Augustine Beach. He had landed a big redfish and had attached it to a stringer on his belt. On the return trip to the beach through deeper water, my brother suddenly disappeared amid swirling water. When he re-appeared, we both quickly ran for the beach, only to discover a lost fish.

Blue Carbon Study Supports Tampa Bay Habitat Restoration and Resiliency Planning

A study, led by Restore America’s Estuaries in partnership with several leading conservation agencies and organizations including Tampa Bay Estuary Program and Tampa Bay Watch, reinforces the importance of restoring coastal habitats in Tampa Bay and around the nation to buffer the effects of rising seas and a changing climate. By the year 2100 seagrasses, marshes and mangroves in Tampa Bay are expected to remove 74 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere - an amount equivalent to removing 160,000 cars off the road every year until 2100. The study includes locally collected data, models the impacts of sea-level rise over the next 100 years and provides management recommendations for adaptation planning. This highlights the substantial contribution that Tampa Bay coastal habitats provide for capturing and storing carbon, and provides new data to help local organizations and agencies understand what actions are needed most to help the Bay mitigate the effects of sea-level rise, while continuing to improve habitat health and the Bay's overall environmental and economic integrity. For more highlights read the report online at www.estuaries.org/bluecarbon‐resources.

9-year-old Photographer's Dream Comes True For the past two years, it has been nine-year-old Madison Harrison's dream to take a picture of the President of the United States. "I wanted to photograph the President, well, because he's the President. It seemed like an impossible dream and I wanted to prove that anything is possible," Harrison said. Harrison picked up her first camera at the age of three and started her own photography business at age seven. On Tuesday, June 14, 2016, the dream became a reality. Harrison was invited by the United State of Women ("USOW"), a White House initiative, to photograph The President of the United States at their first USOW summit held in Washington, D.C. "It felt like I was dreaming. I couldn't believe it when I saw the President of the United States walk out onto the stage right in front of me, in the same room," Harrison said. About a year and a half ago, Harrison started sharing her dream in a YouTube video and using a hashtag campaign, #HelpMadisonMeetPOTUS on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. On June 8, the last day of school, Harrison’s dream started to unfold when she received a private Twitter message from the USOW. They advised they had seen her #HelpMadisonMeetPOTUS hashtag campaign and wanted to invite her to cover the summit hosted by Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey. The USOW organization knew this would be a dream come true for Harrison, as President Barack Obama was scheduled to address the 5000 women who would be in attendance. Harrison was one of 200 press personnel to attend the event in Washington, DC at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Little did Harrison know, she would also get to photograph Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and Vice President Joe Biden, among others. Harrison said she would still like to meet the President and photograph him and his family. Her next goal is to photograph celebrities on the red carpet at the Oscars! For more information, call Photos With Madison at 813-625-5502. Visit Madison’s website at www.photoswithmadison.com. SUNCOAST DIXIELAND JAZZ BAND Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Band at Young VA Center May 21, front from left, Bob Tanguay, Bobby Tessitore, Gordon Moore, Dean Fernald; back from left, Skip Pittman, Howard Smith.

The notable Tampa Bay area SUNCOAST DIXIELAND JAZZ BAND, celebrating its 50th Anniversary next spring as a weekly entertainment fixture at Treasure Island’s Bilmar Beach Resort, graciously donated their services on May 21 for an encore date to play for the Pinellas County Gator Club’s International Gator Day “Thank You Vets!” event at the WC Young Bay Pines VA Center. More than 175-plus vets, VA staff and Gator volunteers enjoyed their smooth jazz renditions, plus a stirring medley of US service branch anthems. Current band is led by trumpeter Bobby Tessitore, who has played on and off about 23 years; keyboardist Dean Fernald, clarinetist Bob Tanguay, and trombonist Gordon Moore. Both drummer Roger Athans, last original member who started in 1968, and Bassist John Lamb retired. Replacing them are drummer Skip Pittman, formerly with Holiday on Ice, and bassist Howard Smith, a veteran of the N.Y. music scene and California’s Disneyland. Tessitore said, “We’re very pleased to have worked with the Pinellas Gator Club again and played for our very deserving veterans. We’re available for private parties with our jazz and any other requested music.” We’re very excited to mark our 50th year at the Bilmar early in 2017.” Clyde Smith, Bilmar General Manager, said, “Having the Suncoast Band with us every Wednesday from 6:30 to 9 pm has been a great attraction for our hotel. They also have a very loyal local following, and we’re planning something very special to mark their Golden Anniversary with us.” More information on the Band, contact Bobby Tessitore, btess715@gmail.com or (727) 641-7252.

Legend of Tierra Verde Mural Returns to it’s Ancestral Home - Almost The Island Grille & Raw Bar plans to unveil the LEGEND OF TIERRA VERDE MURAL at the restaurant’s soon-to-beopened new location at 210 Madonna Blvd. in Tierra Verde, FL 33715. The event is scheduled to take place in mid-September 2016.

The event will also feature original musical recordings from the Port-O-Call, where the mural was on display for many years since the 1960’s. TV monitors throughout the reception area will feature the original Route 66 television episode that was filmed in Tierra Verde.

Honored guests will include local, county and state officials. Carolyn Jackson Gruber, the artist who created the 10’ x 4’ mural in August 1981, will be on hand to discuss the artwork and participate in the unveiling ceremony. She will autograph commemorative copies in miniature of the mural, which will be available for sale in the restaurant’s retail area. The mural, depicting historical scenes from Tierra Verde and the surrounding area, was on display at the (former) Tierra Verde Resort, where the (now deceased) legendary bandleader, Guy Lombardo, regularly performed at Le Club.

Special thanks to Donna Mason; Arthur Zelenak, Sr; Timothy L. & Pamela Landt, Bob & Colleen Mueller and The Island Grille & Raw Bar and Paul Cozzie, the Director of Pinellas County Parks and Conservation Resources. August & September 2016 August: Mars finally returns to Sagittarius However, his energy is still a bit slow and he spends the next three weeks approaching Saturn; then gains full speed ahead on the 24th. The first three weeks of this month are all about moving on from what we finished or came to terms with over the last few months. Also, our energy patterns & temperament improves. On a global level we can hope the violence and accidents and fires are finished! Also on the 2nd a New moon in dramatic Leo is beginning the lunar cycle full of surprises, creativity and maybe some romance! Love planet Venus visits discriminating Virgo on the 5th so we keep high standards and stay organized and giving natives of that sign a lot of popularity all month. On the 18th a Lunar Eclipse occurs as the Full Sturgeon Moon in Aquarius brings our lunar cycle to a peak! This will bring up whatever we need to be aware of so that we can finish it in the next two weeks. The Sun visits industrious Virgo on the 22nd as it is time to plan for the harvest coming soon. Beautiful Venus goes home to Libra on the 29th turning her focus to social, romantic and artistic interests. Then, it is time again for another Mercury retrograde cycle starting on the 30th. What a great time to RE-lease, RE-view and let go as we wind down the days of summer. September: A New Moon Solar Eclipse in Virgo on the 1st day starts a new lunar cycle of figuring out just what we want, with the endurance to work for it. A little creativity and plenty of energy to work on the changes we want; with skill and luck along the way! Yes, this eclipse creates an amazing amount of celestial action so don’t waste a day of getting youself into action! Libras are popular with Venus in their sign, but on the 9th, lucky planet Jupiter will bless these natives for the next twelve months with growth, expansion, opportunities, travel and lots of good times! It is your turn dear Libras to have the benevolent giant travel with you and protect you. The Full Harvest Moon on the 16th is a Lunar Eclipse in compassionate Pisces! The lunar cycle peaks now and activates the changes necessary in each of our lives. Mercury then stations direct on the 22nd, and on the same day the Autumn Equinox occurs as the Sun enters Libra, bringing our first day of fall! Venus visits passionate Scorpio on the 23rd and Mars serious Capricorn on the 27th. This blend will enhance relationships and talents!
