PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Time Flies Whether Fun Or Not

Paradise NEWS

Volumn 21 Number 9 • November 2015 __________________________________________

PUBLISHERS & EDITORS

When we are young, wishing time would fly by so we could be out of grade school, old enough to date, to drive, or to work, we are often told by our elders not to rush things. I remember hearing “the older you are the faster time seems to go.” From my current perspective, I believe they were right. This is the 201st issue of Paradise NEWS, the beginning of our 21st year. Ours is an interesting industry. Our product is dated, yet can be permanent. It has the ability to inform, educate, communicate, and perhaps influence attitudes and outcomes. We feel a great responsibility in that regard. We try hard to be neutral. Looking back at our Premier issue, Dec. of 1995, our feature story was “A New Station!!” about St. Pete Beach’s brand new police building, which we just paid off, and which the St. Pete Beach city commission approved for demolition last meeting to make way for a new Library. The inside cover was an ad for the sponsorship of the art in the park at the northeast intersection of Gulf Blvd. and Pinellas Bayway. Half of a full-page letter from city manager Danny Walker covered FDOT bridge construction projects that were under way, and the upcoming paving of Pass-A-Grille Way and the traffic challenges involved. Fast forward to the present. Some of our seasonal residents may not have been introduced to our new food editor yet. Joyce LaFray has been an acquaintance for many years and a friend for a few. A very well traveled food journalist and noted cookbook publisher, she has terrific credentials, far stronger than one would expect to find in a barrier island newsmagazine. As she points out, however, these are special barrier islands and Paradise News is an unusual News Magazine. Joyce lives in downtown St. Petersburg, and started writing about the familiar, with the restaurants of Sundial in June/July. In August/September she reviewed two of our favorites, The Pearl, Da Sesto Italiano, and one of hers, The Maritana Grille. In October, Joyce wrote all about Cuban Sandwiches. Last month she was back downtown with a story about Chef Ana at 400 Beach Seafood and Tap House. This month we asked her whether, in her professional opinion, we could honestly call north St. Pete Beach our own “Little Italy”. There are still copies of the 2015 summer issues available in the lobby of Palms of Pasadena Hospital, hopefully just visiting. They are also easily accessible online with a single click on Recent Issues at www.paradisenewsfl.com. While you are online, sign up to ‘Receive The Newsletter’. We will send you weekly Thursday emails with our choice of the Top 5 Things to Do this weekend so you don’t miss anything. We will also send a link to each new issue once it is posted online, in case you prefer to read on your phone, pad, laptop or TV. Our industry, and our publication have come a long way in the past 20 years. We appreciate our writers, our artists, our editors and proofreaders, our printers and mailers, our rack and stackers, our advertisers who make it all possible, and of course you, our readers, without whom all this work has little purpose.

Thanks for a great year, two great decades, and all your kind comments about what we do. It is positive feedback from our readers and our advertisers that keeps us going. When you do business with an advertiser, please tell them you read about them in Paradise NEWS.

Peter, Renee and their friends who burn the midnight oil to bring you each new edition of Paradise NEWS.

MORE TIDBITS Rising Tides exhibit expansion, both in Tampa, and Highland Recreation Complex in Largo. Complete Streets in St. Petersburg. Complete Streets are those that are planned, designed, operated and maintained so that people of all ages and physical and economic abilities can safely and comfortably move around in the community; they provide the right accommodation for the land use context. Implementing Complete Streets in St. Petersburg, with its principles of inclusivity, will allow the City to further achieve its status as a city of opportunity where the sun shines on all who come to live, work and play. Mayor Kriseman signed a new Administrative Policy to implement Complete Streets which contains five key points that outline the City's efforts going forward to provide an inclusive transportation network. The Implementation Plan will be developed through a considerable public engagement process that considers how we will continue to move people in and around St. Petersburg in a variety of transportation modes. It will also serve as an update to the City's award-winning CityTrails Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan that was adopted in 2003. Through the implementation of the CityTrails Plan, St. Petersburg has been recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Community and Florida's Best Walking City. The prior site of the Montecello Motel, located at 1700 4th Street North, is being transformed into a new food hall - the Crescent Lake Market. The 18 hotel rooms will serve as stalls for food vendors and chefs, and a covered courtyard will serve as the communal dining room. In December 2014, real estate investor Jonathan Daou paid $825,000 for the motel, which sits adjacent to Crescent Lake. Food hall concepts are becoming increasingly popular, especially in cities like New York and New Orleans. Daou has already secured at least one vendor, Karma Juice Bar & Eatery. The market is anticipated to open in February 2016. Staff from Sun Country Cleaners presented PARC with a check for $16,485 from its Unclaimed Clothing Sale on Nov. 11 at PARC’s main campus. The sale took place at the PARC Thrift Store, located at 5825 66th St. N, with the line winding around the building before the doors opened at 8 a.m. on Nov. 7. Each item in the sale sold for $5, and close to 3,300 items were sold during the event. “Sun Country Cleaners is happy to donate all of the proceeds from this event to PARC,” said Dan Madine, Sun Country Cleaners’ chief operations officer. “This is the ninth time the sale has been held, and each year it gets bigger and bigger.” All proceeds from this annual sale benefit PARC, a not-for-profit agency supporting children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Since the sale began, Sun Country has donated more than $100,000 to PARC through it.

Mayor Rick Kriseman and St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce President Chris Steinocher joined Harborage Marina owners Stan Johnson, Marshall Funk and Gregg Kenney in dedicating the completely rebuilt High and Dry Facility at 1500 Second Street South during a ribbon cutting ceremony. This massive facility cost over a million dollars to reconstruct to modern standards. It is capable of storing up to 396 boats of varying size and is the only facility of its type adjacent to downtown, allowing the Harborage Marina to store boats in or out of the water. A multi-million dollar addition of mega yacht slips is also currently under construction at Harborage Marina. This facility is unique to other adjacent marinas because of their floating docks capable of handling yachts up to 200 feet.

This is Tampa Bay’s only marina with full service onsite amenities demanded by Owners, Captains and Crews alike of vessels of that size. This includes power, water, sanitation and communications in a secure and protected facility. Maximo Moorings received a grant from the City of St Petersburg for new signage at the 5 entrances to the community. These modern new signs are an asset to the Skyway Marina District and help to promote the area. There is plans for an unveiling rope drop moment on December 12 at 11 am at the corner of 34th Street and 50th Avenue. Stop by and celebrate the moment with us. Maximo Moorings Civic Association. On St.Pete Beach! Really! By Joyce LaFray

In the often

crowded vacation world of the

Bay Area Beaches, it’s arduous finding an authentic Italian restaurant, you know, like the one you loved in NYC’s Little Italy, downtown Chicago, or even on a trip to Italy. The question is: Does that kind of eatery exist in Florida? And the answer is yes, right here on St. Pete Beach.

W

hen I moved to St. Petersburg from Long Island, New York there were a few places with palatable Italian cuisine. But just a handful. I wanted an Italian eatery just like back home. There was Gennaro’s in Pass-a-Grille, Armani’s and Donatello in Tampa, and a handful of others, but few worth the fuel, and most were expensive. Lucky for us, times have changed. If it’s Italian you’re craving, there’s no better place to satisfy those guilty pleasures than the captivating cluster of Italian eateries located on Blind Pass Road in St. Pete Beach. In fact, this little area’s becoming so well known for its Italian specialties that locals are beginning to call it “Little Italy” and justifiably so. My point of reference for reviewing this type of cuisine has everything to do with the year I lived in Rome, Italy. I ardently searched out the best trattorias and ristorantes my modest budget would allow. I also spent five years fixing menus for Italian restaurants in South Beach and Coral Gables, so, I feel I had enough experience to decide if there is a “Little Italy” here on St. Pete Beach.

While I have long been an advocate of glorious Northern Italian cuisine, having traveled a good deal in southern Italy I have never been able to say that one style was better than another. They are all glorious, done properly, of course. It’s like choosing between apples and oranges. All good, but different. Having taken the tour of this suggested row of restaurants that feature mostly southern Italian cuisine, I have come to the conclusion that St. Pete Beach can brag about its’ superlative Italian cuisine, as good as in any major city. Who knows the secret of what makes a great pizza? I think you will agree that there is nothing quite like the taste of fresh baked tomatoes, fresh “A-grade” mozzarella and crust crisped to perfection. I can still taste the amazing flavors of the fresh baked Pizza Margarita I was served at the shop most famous for its pies in Naples, Italy. They were piping hot, out of the brick oven, instantly tantalizing your taste buds. There are an impressive number of brick ovens on Gulf Boulevard and Blind Pass Road in St. Pete Beach.

There are cold antipastos available on most restaurant menus, but none I’ve found quite as scrumptious as Tuttorosso’s meat version, the Antipasto Italiano. The presentation is simply divine, but the quality and flavor of the choice ingredients is just as outstanding as the appearance. Served over very fresh greens with balsamic dressing are paper-thin slices of prosciutto, Genoa salami, mortadella, freshly roasted and charred sweet red bell peppers, roasted mushrooms, garlic, onions, and more. Spectacular ordered with a lovely Chianti for a mere $6.50 per glass. Fresh made garlic “knots” are an extra treat. But then that’s not how real Italians eat. Typically, the would add a pasta course, a main fish and/or serving of meat or poultry, a salad (that does not include the antipasto!) and an alluring dessert such as foghatelle, a shell shaped pastry with orange peel and a sweet ricotta filling or Zeppole, two Italian style donuts coverd with Nutella and sugar. All available at Tuttorosso’s, and all excellent.

e a t & me e t

My first stop on the beach was an eatery named Tuttorosso, whose menu subhead is “Pizzeria Napoletana”. While “Tuttorosso” has been defined in many ways by Italians, it basically means a meaty, red, crushed tomato sauce with delectable flavor and perfect definition. Perhaps, I surmise, that’s why the Naples born owners of this hidden gem were so pleased with their sauce that they decided to name it after their sauce.

Another “Little Italy” favorite, which stays open until 4 every morning is Vito & Michaels Gourmet Pizza and Pasta, located next to a convenience store in a small strip center across from Winn Dixie. Pizza is king here and for the many years I’ve been patronizing this casual place I’ve never had a mediocre meal. Pan pizza crust is lightly marinated in olive oil and baked in old-fashioned pizza pans. Fried cheese ravioli and jumbo mussels are favorites appetizers, but the owners add in a few tastes of Americana with their chicken wings, subs and some other offerings. Be adventurous. Try the Chicken and Shrimp Francaper, a chicken breast with shrimp, mushrooms, all sautéed in a white caper sauce over fettuccine. For dessert there’s a good selection of gelato, cheesecake, and even a chocolate chip cannoli, but helping sizes are generous and you have to plan ahead to save room. Great place to bring the kids as service is quick, efficient and very friendly.

Vito & Michael’s Gourmet Pizzeria is located at 7704 Blind Pass Road, St. Pete Beach 33706 727-360-3658

Pizza can be ordered by the whole pie or by the slice. I opted for a piece of the veggie pie and one of the meat pie. It had been awhile since I had friarielli, also know as broccoli rabe, so I ordered a side. Other offerings include a Spaghetti Bolognese and Terracina (with zucchini, spinach, pine nuts, tomatoes, garlic and oil. The ambience is casual, there is a cozy bar with a friendly bartender. Honestly, eating at Tuttorosso’s, is a step back to the tradition of which the Italians are so very proud.

Verducci’s Italian Fresh Market opened this summer, just across 78th Ave. to the north of the restaurant. Slightly smaller than the frenetic 22nd Street Mazzaro’s Market, it is perfectly sized to pick up a ready cooked meal, fresh meats and poultry, and a variety of prepared entrees that are not only delicious, but different. Next door to the north is another winner, Verducci’s Pizzeria & Trattoria. They proclaim to serve Cuciniamo con Amore, which translates to mean “Cooking with Love”. Certainly, “love” is the key word here. There are few trattoria’s anywhere as intimate yet as casually elegant as Verducci. Dinner specials vary daily and it is always worth the adventure to sample something as enchanting as their fresh Grouper Livornese. Spaghetti Alloscoglio is another seafood winner with shrimp, clams and mussels in a delicate cherry tomato sauce. And, of course, there are the fan favorites of incredibly delicious lasagna made with a perfect Bolognese and a fresh pasta like gnocchi done Sorrentina style, with basil and their fresh made mozzarella. Their popular early dinner specials feature your choice of 10 meals at $10, for seating from 4 - 5:45 pm, with several delicious options and healthy portion sizes. There’s also an “Happy Hour” wine deal adding 2 for one house wines for just $5 per glass until 7 pm. A “La Pizza” section of their menu celebrates eight different styles with some unusual toppings that you won’t find anywhere else such as goat cheese, speck and Kalamata olives. Treat yourself to authentic Italian at a restaurant that never ceases to surprise and impress.

Verducci’s Pizzeria & Trattoria is located at 7736 Blind Pass Rd., St. Pete Beach 727-363-7900

Veal and peppers are to live for. They offer a slim but generously prepared Sicilian steak that is pounded, breaded and fried to savory, tender perfection. I tried this hot as well as cold. Both ways were enjoyable. Lunch specials are generally delicious and a bargain. Need ingredients to complete that perfect meal? There’s fresh baguettes, fresh pastas and a Bolognese lasagna that would make angels sing. If you’re up for just looking and hanging out there’s a cozy bar with an interesting selection of wines-by-the-glass. Down the ramp behind the bar is an entire room full of Italian wines, from inexpensive to extravagant. I couldn’t resist the impressive variety of extra virgin olive oils. I choose two, one with a lovely porcini flavor. I drizzled it over freshly cooked pasta, added a side of crispy garlic bread, and a side of Friarelli, (broccoli rabe) which I could eat by the plateful. And I did.

T

he Verducci name has already become synonymous with top quality food at affordable prices on the barrier islands. That reputation is also getting to the mainland as word of St. Pete Beach’s new “Little Italy” spreads. With over 60 years of combined experience owning and operating several successful restaurants, Vinny and Giovanni decided to pursue their dream of opening an Italian Market.

Their commitment to quality and attention to detail shines through the minute you walk in the front door. The renaissance of this building is remarkable and the treats available inside are mostly new to the beaches. Verducci’s Market is the kind of place hostesses run all over their respective cities to find, right here at 7800 Blind Pass Road in north St. Pete Beach “. People who want to live their lives well are seeking out fresh, home-made food, prepared without preservatives.

That is what Verducci’s Market is here to provide,” says co-owner Vinny Fortunato. The passion is obvious. Here, you will be sure to find something delicious for everyone. Renee and I have brought several friends and neighbors there for lunch with great reception. I have overheard several customers saying they don’t ever have to go to the mainland again. Fresh baked breads, pizzas, Italian pastries, high quality deli meats, fine imported cheeses, Italian wines, coffees, pastas, homemade red and pink vodka sauces, fresh produce, dressings and fine imported packaged goods line the shelves in the lobby, which is bordered by a variety of coolers. The southwest corner features an authentic brick oven, imported from Italy, part of the secret behind the Italian market’s great breads, pizza pies, Calzones and Strombolis. The stainless steel catering kitchen covers the western wall with gleaming displays of fresh cut bacon-wrapped filet mignon for under $5, and thick New York strips. Lollipop lamb chops and Italian sausages share display cases with a huge variety of freshly-made Italian specialties like eggplant, veal, chicken, vegetables and pastas. Their home-made red sauces and Pink Vodka Sauce are sold by the pint. At the north end is an incredible olive bar with top quality olives of every color and flavor. The coffee, wine and dessert bar

on the north wall guards the entrance to the “wine room”. The walls of this room are covered with bottles of Italian wines, displayed in a resting pose that ensures the corks are always wet, and all kept at a perfect temperature.

Whatever you try at Verducci’s, you can be confident it is made with Love. You can try a glass of most any wine before you take home a bottle. The success of Verducci’s restaurant has proven a challenge for the market. Parking is at a premium all over the beach, but the popularity of Verducci’s Trattoria prompted the hiring of a parking lot attendant. To minimize conflicts, Verducci’s Market is introducing breakfasts in addition to lunches. Imagine yourself seated at the coffee and pastry counter or at a table on the front deck or inside for breakfast, lunch, or an early dinner. He and Johnny

have been tweaking the market times, adding Sunday hours. Now they are looking at opening earlier. “We are getting into breakfasts in a big way” says Vinny Giovanni. “There are 198 restaurants in St. Pete Beach and only a handful offer breakfast” he continues, “…and none of them offer what we plan to offer.” Another option at which Verducci’s market can excel is off-site catering. A brand new catering menu is available with suggestions and surprisingly affordable prices to serve 6-16 people from Antipasto to Tiramisu. Their young catering team showed what they could do when they got on the Thanksgiving meal to go bandwagon. Reports say the thanksgiving meal was nothing short of spectacular. Just a few blocks from two of the largest churches on the south barrier islands and the St. Pete Beach recreation center, Verducci’s Market is a great choice for birthdays, weddings and anniversary party caterings. Whatever you try at Verducci’s, you can be confident it is made and served with pride and passion. The NEW market hours are 8 am – 5 pm - six days a week and 9 am - 4 pm on Sundays. Mega Challah Bake a Huge Success Amid the stirring, kneading and braiding, came the unity, empowerment and bonding as 100 Jewish women and girls gathered at the Philip Benjamin Towers for a mega challah bake. It was the first of its kind in South Pinellas County. Co-sponsors of the event were the Chabad Jewish Center of Greater St. Petersburg, the Jewish Federation of Pinellas and Pasco, Hadassah, Philip Benjamin Towers Foundation & YAD. The participants joyfully made and braided their own challah, some for the first time. “Here tonight, we are Jewish women united,” declared Chaya Korf, co-director of Chabad Jewish Center of S. UNDER ALL… It’s The LAND! A 50-foot-wide lot in Pinellas Park is $20,000. The same non-waterfront lot on the barrier islands is $200,000. Move it to canal front and it’s $400,000. And finally move the same 50-foot piece of dirt (or sand) to the beach and it costs $1,250,000. Why? The Law of Supply and Demand. What does this mean to you? If you own a piece of Pinellas Barrier Island sand, you own a piece of gold with many options. You can use it for security to build a new home or upgrade your current one. You can leverage it to move to a better piece. You can rent it and earn income. You can use it as an inflation hedge. It’s security for your family in case of economic decline. Or just keep it and let it appreciate as demand increases. Since I’m in the field every day advising potential sellers, I feel your pain. When we’re confused about what to do, we tend to do nothing. This is why barrier island inventory is very low. Prices are only increasing slowly. Not many buyers and sellers realize the importance of the land value waterfront property has. Before you decide how to use your piece of gold, please consider the

options above. Two major factors influence the value of your property. One is the ongoing increases in flood insurance and the other is your ability to rent short or long term. Weekly rentals bring almost the same income as annual rentals. Most beach towns have restrictions on the length of rentals. These rules are being challenged in the courts and the outcome is uncertain. I’ve been selling Florida real estate since the early seventies through 4 recessions and the fifth one is coming. Whenever I’m confused about our economy I pause and reflect on my 7 core beliefs before advising clients of their options. Please consider them to guide you with real estate decisions. I’ll provide this valuable pricing tool without any cost or obligation. Contact me with any questions you may have after considering how my 7 Core Beliefs

About Real Estate may affect you. • The laws of supply and demand always govern real estate values. • Good real estate held long enough always increases in value. • No real estate has higher overall value than Florida real estate, especially waterfront. • Only buy stuff that you know about. • Only sell real estate when you have a better use for the money. • Since no one knows the top or bottom of the market…forget about buying or selling there. • A real estate agent’s main value is their ability to gather and transmit real estate knowledge to clients. NOVEMBER 2015

ParadiseNewsFL.com

Many people understand that they occasionally need an attorney to review contracts. That does not mean, however, that when they are making the most important decisions of their lives (like buying or selling a home), that they will stop to have it done before signing. Sometimes it’s impulsiveness, or someone’s description of the agreement as a “standard contract” (there’s no such thing). They are anxious to get the deal done and may cut a few corners. The real estate agents seem so reassuring, what could go wrong? In many states in the North east and Midwest, seeking the advice of an attorney first is the norm. There (unlike Florida), all sales contracts must be written by attorneys. Listing contracts frequently contain language that Sellers should think about twice before signing. Every year, there are more regulations, such as the Sellers’ duty to disclose, along with zoning, building regulations, deed restrictions and survey issues. A good real estate lawyer knows the community and the common legal issues there, what agents are successful in the marketplace, and knows about the relative ethics of agents.

Some real estate attorneys actually teach contract law and real estate practice to agents, to help satisfy the agents’ continuing education requirements. Many brokers tell me that they are relieved when there’s an attorney on the team, because their liability decreases, as the lawyer provides another set of eyes and that much greater expertise. Being represented by an attorney gives you greater control over the transaction, from the exact language of all the documents, to who will close the transaction. The end result is a smoother process for you throughout. Some people are concerned about the cost of hiring an attorney. Obviously, it’s miniscule compared to the cost of things going really wrong. For Sellers, having a real estate attorney assist with the transaction and close the deal usually doesn’t cost any more than trusting it to a title company that lacks the specialized training and experience a lawyer enjoys. If you’re thinking of buying or selling property, talk to a real estate attorney. He (or she) will tell you what to look out for, the questions to ask, and what pitfalls to avoid. Peace of mind is a wonderful thing, and something you are entitled to.

Shuffleboard in Pass-A-Grille

By Nanette Wiser

Was Tante Trudie’s Pride & Joy

I

n 2012, all hell broke loose in Pass-A-Grille when a tornado roared south of the Don CeSar. The twister ripped through the itty bitty 34 block long strip of land, dotted with historic bungalows, restaurants known for grouper sandwiches, shallow eddies and Pass-A-Grille Park’s legendary Trudie Perry Shuffleboard Courts.

A humble German immigrant, Tante Trudie as she was known to her friends and grand-nephews Max and James Assenheimer was considered a force of nature herself. She lost her sister in Germany’s WWII, came to America and landed in St. Petersburg Beach around 1961 from Mineola, New York. First a nurse, she was a proud housewife who never had children. For 37 years, she lived at 304 Pass-A-Grille Way #5 and for 22 of those, she was the resident Queen of the Pass-A-Grille Shuffleboard Courts. According to her doting nephew (and local real estate broker) James, “she ran the shuffleboard courts like a commandant”. Nothing escaped her attention. Repairs, upgrades? All Trudie and her volunteer manpower. Play by the rules? You bet, when Tante Trudie was in charge. During the 2012 storm, the tree that had been planted in her honor took a big break on one of the main limbs. James begged the workers not to cut it down.“Today, the tree continues to flourish, a testament to her tenacity I think,” recalls James. Trudie’s community efforts were honored and a plaque with her name memorialized her contribution during her shuffleboard reign. When Trudie passed on October 30th 1998, she was mourned by many. Today, the namesake sign in her honor needs some TLC and the family is hoping that

Santa’s Elves (aka the town’s leaders or merchants) will restore her sign, which is in need of sprucing up. “My dad was like her son. We were like grandchildren,” says James. “We would paint and refurbish the tables and chairs and spend Sunday Funday there when we started visiting St. Pete Beach in 1967. Mr. Hurley would be invited down to give out the trophy and lots of snowbirds considered it their home away from home.” “She was sharp as a tack till the day she died,” says James, who is named for her (Perry James). “She remembered where she was standing when Kennedy was killed. Whether she was making lamb for Sunday dinner or overseeing a shuffleboard tournament, she got things done with that particular German can-do spirit. She was deliberate, successful, yet very gentle and humble.” Shuffleboard has gone in and out of vogue since its initiation in St. Petersburg in 1921. Mirror Lake’s St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club’s St. Pete Shuffle is the current hipster rage. Club spirit still reigns, just as it did in 1940 when the Pass-A-Grille Shuffleboard Club (founded in 1938) built the clubhouse. Back then, membership dues were $2/year and guests could play all day for 25 cents. According to Tampa Bay Times reporter Bob McClure in a January 2015 article, a group of 40-50 seniors meets three times a week to play during season, (January - April), competing for trophies in the annual Hurley Tournament. On the day I drove over to commune with Tante Trudie’s spirit and toast her park, I saw people of all ages ogling or enjoying this old-fangled game gone new recreation. So for Auld Lang Syne, let’s usher in the New Year with some TLC for Tante Trudie’s plaque, okay Pass-A-Grille? DECEMBER 2015

Eddie Gayton, longtime volunteer and new Operations Manager, told Paradise News, “Founder Ralph Heath’s sons, who have owned the Sanctuary property since 2011, have pledged their full support to the new management team”. “We’re again in full operation with a new key staff and a fully functioning Clinic. In addition to myself as Operations Manager, included are Office Manager Adrianne, and Gift Shop Manager Diane. The fully-equipped Clinic is operated by key staff and volunteers with vets who offer their assistance with any seriously injured birds”.

Open daily from 9:00 a.m. to Sunset, we offer tours of 10 or more Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with prior confirmation. Pelican feeding is daily at 2:30 pm, weather permitting … The Sanctuary is a great site for weddings, birthday parties and other events, under our decking, right off the beach. Both 7-Eleven and Beach Pizza are a half-mile away, and Beach Pizza delivers. Our Gift Shop is open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm daily and a great variety of wonderful gifts is also available for online ordering at www.SuncoastSeabirdSanctuary.com … For another perfect gift, you can also “Adopt a Bird!”

Old Florida Attraction “We’re actively recruiting new volunteers, who include Rescuers, Visitor Greeters, Bird Caregivers, Gift Shop Workers and Fundraisers. Prospective Volunteers should contact Diane in the Gift Shop at 727-391-6211.” “We’re also getting excellent response to our full list of Sanctuary amenities.

Gayton proudly noted, “One of the very few ‘Old Florida Attractions’ on our beaches, the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary offers an opportunity for locals and visitors alike to see up close and commune with the huge variety of feathered friends that make this part of the world so very interesting to visit and live in.

In its role as a sea and land bird hospital and rehabilitation center, our facility, located on a narrow strip of beachfront land at 18328 Gulf Blvd., sees up to 5,000 injured birds each year.” “Volunteer rescuers answer calls to help free birds tangled in fishing line, beer six-pack holders and affected by other forms of pollution. Those needing surgery or rehabilitation are taken to the Sanctuary. Some rehabilitated birds take up permanent residence on the property even after they are freed.” “We’ve gotten some nice recent publicity, including a Trip Advisor #1 ranking among seven Indian Shores attractions. The Sanctuary was also featured on Bay News Nine TV’s popular ‘Florida On A Tankful’ series under the headline ’Injured Feathers Flock to Seabird Spa’ and we’re continually adding new ‘Friends’ on our Facebook page, Facebook.com/Suncoast SeabirdSanctuary. “Our Wish List includes stainless steel scrub pads, Scotch Brite scrub sponges, paper towels, laundry detergent, liquid bleach, Mean Green super cleaner & degreaser, 35 & 45-gallon black garbage bags, Tall kitchen bags, old bath towels, dry small nugget dog food, grapes & apples, garden hoses & nozzles with ball valves, heavy metal rakes, new brown lunch bags, new Tissue Paper, 8 ½ x 11-inch copier paper, postage stamps and scotch tape.” “There is no admission fee, though once they see the good work we do, visitors tend to make generous donations and/or big expenditures in our gift shop. All money raised goes to care for and feed the birds. As a 501(c)3 non-profit, all Sanctuary donations are tax-deductible."

Brief Sanctuary History Driving home from Christmas shopping in late 1971, longtime local resident Ralph Heath found a limping cormorant on the roadside. After treatment by a local vet, he took the bird – which he named Maynard – to his home in Indian Shores to recuperate.

Today, the site is the largest wild bird hospital and bird sanctuary in the United States, based on the admission of up to 5,000 birds per year.

Soon the word got around that the Heath residence was the place to bring a sick or injured bird. He then got the necessary permits to possess and care for wild land and sea birds, including threatened and endangered species. Local bait shops donated fresh fish and Ralph’s family set up a hospital in their recreation room. Due to the exorbitant cost of feeding and maintaining the birds, with the help of the Heath family and a few good friends, the non-profit Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary was bornalmost 45 years ago in 1972 at its current site, and within four years had more than 400 birds in residence. From the start, the Sanctuary was set up to immediately triage, stabilize, and administer fluids to malnourished or injured birds.

The Sanctuary mission has remained the same as when it opened: dedicated to the rescue, repair and rehabilitation of injured birds, and then their release back into nature. At the same time, there are more than 400 “ permanent residents” living at the Sanctuary, who are too injured for release into the wild. New Operations Manager and longtime volunteer, Eddie Gayton pledges, “With your continuing help as volunteers, and with your donations to the Sanctuary, we will fulfill our goals to care for and rehabilitate injured birds, and to educate the public about wildlife and the environment for many more years.” PN

RJ Siviur served in World War II & Beyond. Now He Needs Our Help.

36

Veteran’s Day has come and gone. Many of us remember a few stories about the veterans who served in one of history’s most brutal wars. There are fewer than 855,000 veterans remaining of the 16 million who served our nation in World War II. Of these, about 80,000 live in Florida. One we know is a long time resident of St. Petersburg.

Some of you may remember RJ, a local newspaper publisher who sent the Tierra Verde News (Now the Island Reporter) Tierra Verde Bulletin (became YOLO) to your mailbox for years. He served in the Army Air Corp as a meteorologist in England, France, Germany and went home to Minneapolis, Minnesota, New Years Eve 1945.

If you passed this spry looking WWII veteran on the street, you would swear he is in his late seventies. Richard J. Siviur, “RJ” to his friends, will be 93 in January. While most seniors choose to retire and relax here in the Florida sun, RJ is passionately completing his book “Live to Be 100”.

Richard’s memory is clear and remarkable. He recalls the tiniest details of his life including the healthy lifestyle practices he follows religiously. We can all benefit from his teaching. Richard is one of a thinning group of WWII veterans and is releasing his book to share his health secrets with the world. He needs our help to promote his book.

St. Pete Beach Commission Approves

New Library Site Story by STEVE TRAIMAN After more than five years of endless discussion, workshops and planning, the St. Pete Beach City Commission by a unanimous 5-0 vote November 17 approved a new Public Library to be built on the former Police Station site across 75th Avenue next to Horan Park. City Manager Wayne Saunders had reviewed the final three options for the 45-year old Library for the Commission, and this proved to be the most advantageous to expedite construction of a long-needed new facility. He also told the Commission that of several developers interested in the long-vacant East Corey property, one had expressed serious interest in helping fund what could be a 75th Avenue overpass, or underpass below the bridge, in what would be a public/private partnership. Estimated cost is about $4-plus million, with $2 million in the new Fiscal 2016 budget plus a $200,000 PPLC grant. A major fundraising campaign, which had been put on hold, will be relaunched with the full support and guidance of Mayor Maria Lowe and City Finance Director Elaine Edmunds. Saunders emphasized that construction would not start until complete funding is assured. He will be working with the City Finance Director on various alternatives so that construction might begin within 12 months after the plans are approved. Meeting November 19, the Library Advisory Committee unanimously gave its support to the new plan. Chairman Judy Cohan said, “I and my fellow Committee members

are delighted that our SPB Commissioners have approved a new Library to be built on the present site of t he Police Station. We look forward to advising and assisting the City as much as possible to make the new Library a reality.” Speaking for the Friends of the SPB Library, President Muriel Desloovere said, “The board of directors of the Friends couldn’t be more excited that the City is finally moving forward towards a new library. At our next meeting in January, when we hope some preliminary plans will be available, we will discuss the best ways to use the funds the Friends have available to help in making a truly 21st Century library a reality." At that same meeting, the Commission authorized the City Manager to enter into a purchasing agreement for $86,850 with Forestall Enterprises Inc. for demolition of the Police Department building. Saunders noted the contact would leave the concrete slab and footings at this time as they might be used for necessary FEMA-required first floor parking in what realistically will be a three-floor new Library. Saunders added that the City had gotten approval from the PPLC to modify the $200,000 grant to use some funds for vital repair needs at the current Library. Part of the funds will be immediately used to issue a Request for Quote (RFQ) for a design consultant/architect to survey the site and come up with preliminary plans. This is vital to assure filling by April 1 for an up to $500,000 State construction grant. PN

SHELL KEY

Pinellas County staff addressed Shell Key stakeholders at Tampa Bay Watch on Oct. 27, to discuss the closure of the north pass into the Shell Key Preserve, which occurred early this year. During the meeting, Tierra Verde residents voiced their concerns that the closure will degrade the overall environmental quality of the water and seagrass meadows in the preserve’s back bay region. Some stakeholders attribute the closure to sand moving south from years of beach nourishment projects north of Shell Key. The residents expressed needs for the county, state and federal authorities to restore circulation to the preserve by dredging a new north passage and using the sand for nearby beach nourishment projects. Pinellas County Parks and

Conservation Resources staff explained their land management priorities for the preserve, which the county has managed for the state since 2000. Through a series of historical aerial photos, Dr. Ping Wang of University of South Florida’s School of Geosciences discussed the dynamic nature of the Shell Key coastal region since the 1940’s. He described the abundance of nearshore sand available in the area and illustrated the migration, changing coastline and extremely rapid growth of Shell Key since the early 1970s. County staff and Dr. Wang emphasized the importance of obtaining an understanding of the controlling factors of sand movement in the Shell Key coastal system prior to making any decisions about dredging. In order to make informed

science-based decisions, the county will initiate a dual inlet study directed by Dr. Wang encompassing the Shell Key coastal region from the Pass-A-Grille Channel to Bunces Pass. The study is expected to begin this winter and provide staff with a better understanding of sand migration patterns and land form changes as well as identify sustainable alternatives to reopening the north passage. The study is expected to be completed in mid to late 2017, and staff is evaluating opportunities to accelerate its conculsion. In the meantime, county staff will continue periodic seagrass surveys and initiate a new monitoring program to assess water quality in the preserve.

The Pinellas County “Doing Things for You” app is available for residents to report issues and access useful resources. Pinellas County can also be found on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram. More information is available on the county website, www.pinellascounty.org, which features LiveChat for assistance. Pinellas County complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act. www.sarahlyonsastrologer.com www.facebook.com/Sarahlyonsastrologer It is the last month of the year and we are all busy with holiday plans and festivities! When Venus, the planet of beautiful things and relationships visits intense and passionate Scorpio on the 4th, we may let our desires get the best of us! At least she promises to be resourceful and help us uncover the deals while shopping. Relationships tend to be intense and new meetings magnetic! It is a good thing that thinking planet Mercury is in practical Capricorn starting the 9th; it promises to keep us level headed and using our common sense with every decision, big or small. On the 11th a restless New Moon in Sagittarius begins the lunar cycle this month, with all of the energy we need to start off in as many directions as we choose! Just be careful not to scatter yourself too thin or take on too many things to do; as being overwhelmed will surely ruin the holiday mood.

SAGITTARIUS: Your own personal new year has started as you get serious about new direction and duties. Take some quiet time at home or away for a pleasant break. The holiday full moon shines on finances, intimate encounters and endings of the old ways.

GEMINI: A time to make new plans with partners; both business and professional as responsibilities shift. The workplace is pleasant and superiors easygoing. Finances and values are your focus for the holiday. You will be ready to work on next year’s projects.

CAPRICORN: You are doing a lot of planning in private as you realize changes are due, and a new cycle brewing. Friends and social activities fill your calendar but work also takes your time. Partners are in your holiday spotlight; sharing time and attention.

CANCER: The work place wants a new makeover; let go of the old and create what will work now. Fun and romance is on your mind this month, too. The holiday full moon puts you in the spotlight! Your warm caring concern for others highlights the festivities.

AQUARIUS: A new focus on friends and social obligations begins now. You are favored by superiors and finances look good. The holiday spotlight falls on you helping others in a charitable fashion and at the same time recognizing your own personal needs.

LEO: You are all for fun and maybe a new romance this month! Home is where your heart is and family members are favored. The holiday full moon has you in a reflective mood wanting some quiet time to go within. Travel safe and enjoy time with loved ones.

The Winter Solstice occurs on the 21st as the Sun enters Capricorn, bringing the first day of winter. The winter is a time for quiet contemplation and going within. What was your experience this year and what will you let go of with its ending? The nights are at their longest and darkest this time of year; just right for stargazing and presenting the Full Cold Moon in Cancer which comes to its peak on Christmas Eve night. You can expect emotions to run high as the lunar cycle peaks with holiday festivities underway. Be more understanding and easy going with everyone you meet, keeping expectations to a minimum and appreciating each and every moment. The celebrating doesn’t stop until the end of the year, and just in time to kick off the party social planet Venus moves into outgoing Sagittarius on the 30th to amp up the fun! New Year’s Eve promises to be fun for all, no matter what your plans! The cosmos is sending you off to 2016 with renewed hope and big plans to make your dreams come true!

PISCES: New career trends and obligations are starting. It is an enjoyable time to travel alone or with someone, but watch spending. The holiday full moon shines on creative time, love, romance and just having fun no matter where you are or who you are with!

VIRGO: A new home project or turn of events in the family is likely now. It is easy to talk to others and you have their support. The holiday brings a peak in social activities and invitations! Friends fill any spare time with celebrations and creative suggestions!

ARIES: You will be on the go spreading holiday cheer! Finances look good and the workplace mood is easy going. The full moon holiday focus shines in your home life and onto family time; bringing enjoyable gatherings and memorable moments ‘til year’s end.

LIBRA: You are on the go for both fun and obligations this month with plenty of energy to spare! Income gets a boost; but watch spending later on. Your holiday spotlight is on career and position as the year comes to a close; a lucky time to plan for the New Year.

TAURUS: A new financial plan will work out well. Letting go of old ways will be easier. Partners are cooperative and easy going. The full moon spotlight is on what you say and how you say it. Connect to siblings; friendly neighbors and social gatherings.

SCORPIO: You are popular with others now and socially in demand! A new look into values and income potential brings clarity to plans. The holiday full moon lights up your desire to learn and travel. You are energized and eager to start fresh in the New Year!

Ronald McDonald House asks the Tampa Bay community to join them in helping families in crisis by contributing throughout the holiday season. This fundraiser underwrites the $80 per night cost for families to stay within walking distance of their hospitalized children. 2,000 families each year find shelter, comfort and care at the Ronald McDonald House while their children receive treatment in our bay area hospitals.

Ronald McDonald House is Keeping Families Close

ParadiseNewsFL.com

Kristy Chase Tozer (above) is a former board member and enthusiastic supporter of Ronald McDonald House. Two years ago, her daughter was critically ill and the Tozer family required the resources of Ronald McDonald House to help them through a very difficult time. She still tears up when she tells the story of how her daughter Kaiea almost died, and what a tremendous help it was to have RMH available to her. Her story is a good example of what RMH families go through, each and every day of the year. Over the years, we have heard many stories about families who have stayed at the Ronald McDonald House and what a gift that refuge was for them during difficult times. Now we have joined their ranks and are grateful that we knew where to turn in our time of need. We hope the community will rally around our families, and support Keeping Families Close this holiday season at the Ronald McDonald House of Tampa Bay. A Soft Golden Glow on Christmas Eve S

hortly after the founding of the Isle of Palms Civic Association in 1958, a group of residents of the growing Treasure Island community visited Mexico during the Chrisrmas season. In some of the less affluent towns, they observed lighted candles inside paper bags being placed at intervals along the streets and roadways. The Association adopted the idea, and each Christmas Eve since, residents have placed these "luminaries" along the streets of Isle of Palms. Initially, there were a number of vacant lots, and adjacent neighbors and volunteers placed them in these areas, also. They were lighted just after sundown, and often burned well into the night. One major newspaper was so impressed with the subtle effect that they commissioned a helicopter to obtain a photo of the streets outlined with "luminaries" and The Association also had a color postcard made. Carolers walked the streets, open house events were common and Santa also toured each street. The idea has since spread to other areas and hopefully, so has the aura of Christmas Eve along our beaches. The soft golden glow adds greatly to the colorful lighting of streets and residences.
