Cover Artist Stephen O’Connor; owner of Blue Current Designs was born here in St. Petersburg, Florida. Growing up locally, Stephen developed a quick appreciation of the ocean and all of the creatures that relied on it. Stephen began drawing as a young boy, so it was only natural for him to sketch his experiences of the water which included fish, birds and the natural beauty of Florida’s landscape.
Sunset Beach Townhouse
Later in life, Stephen’s love of art led him to Europe where he attended the Professionale Per Scalpellini School in Lasa, Italy where he became an EU Marble Sculptor. Despite his love of all art forms, his main passion has always been painting marine life. He continues to develop his skills by reflecting the ocean through painting and drawing. His Marine Art took a new platform recently with the launch of Blue Current Design’s fishing apparel line in 2013. The men’s and women’s clothing line features some of his original drawings that display his love of Marine life. Stephen’s art and apparel can be found at the links below as well as his direct contact information for anyone interested in personalized pieces. He looks forward to hearing from you. Stephen M. In the past five weeks we have been priviledged to attend a ninetieth and two one hundredth birthday celebrations. While we have often been told that aging is not for sissies, these recent experiences have convinced me that there is still plenty of reason to celebrate reaching such milestones in life if you live your life with an open heart and you surround yourself with happy people. We wrote on page 7 of our May issue about Maudie Gurak. Once an introvert who kept to herself, Maudie became an active volunteer at the urging of a neighbor, and the city celebrated her 100th birthday with a Treasure Island Parade and a party.
Al Konetzni (pictured on last issue’s cover with Mickey Mouse) was surrounded by his family and friends, some of whom came from across the country to be there for the occassion. Earlier the same day, Al Ingram turned 90 in Pass-a-Grille. (A photo from that event appears on page 10). While statistics show we are living longer, celebrating these higher numbers can get lonely when your longtime friends pass away before the occasion. The secret to having plenty of people to celebrate with seems to be to continue to make new, younger friends as you age. The best way to do that seems to be through involvement. You won’t find them by sitting in front of your television. Maudie found hers through volunteerism. Her friends with the Treasure Islettes and the Action Club keep her young at heart. Al Konetzni never met a stranger. His birthday party was populated with people from 5 to 95 years his junior. He celebrates and appreciates the wonders of his life and attracts friends and followers through his outgoing friendly nature. Al Ingram had a number of careers which gave him a tradition of service. His wife Gerry is one of the barrier island’s greatest seasonal volunteers, and she dragged Al into her volunteerism too, getting him to build many of the displays for the historical museum, cabinets at the Warren Webster center and lots more. His friends, however are mostly fellow fishing enthusiasts with whom he still goes out occasionally. Part of the secret seems to be to find something you enjoy doing, then find others who enjoy the same thing. It could be through church, the recreation department, volunteering for your city, your hospital or finding another way to contribute your time and experience to be with or help others. If we are going to live longer, let’s make the extra years count for something besides the growing numbers. Peter, Renee and the Gang that brings you the Paradise NEWS.

ST. PETERSBURG
Tampa Bay Business Journal shared a Caddy’s Treasure Island update on April 30th. New owner Berry O’Connor shared with TBO, “We’re continuing operations; people keep their jobs; people still have their Caddy’s. ”Concerns were raised over the past year that Caddy’s may be closing its doors due to an ongoing legal dispute with the State of Florida and that the popular beach bar would be torn down. Fortunately, the owners of MacDinton’s along with a fourth owner paid $7.5 million to long-time owner Tony Amico in late April and took over operating Caddy’s. Caddy’s is the largest local beach bar that still legally allows alcohol consumption ON the beach. For more on Caddy’s long legal dispute go to http://www.bizjournals.com/tampabay
St. Petersburg broke ground on Tyrone Square Mall's Cobb Luxury 10 Theatre on May 14th. The theater is under construction in the mall's northwest parking lot, fronting Tyrone Boulevard. It will include 10 auditoria with 1,200 total seats, wall-to-wall screens with 3D capability, and a full-service restaurant and bar. Patrons will be able to enjoy their meals in the theaters.
Official ribbon cutting and opening for the Treasure Island Ocean Club was held on May 21st. TJM Acquired the Trails End Hotel in Treasure Island, Florida in 2013. The hotel – built in the 50’s on over 300 feet of sand, felt like a perfect fit for TJM with its “Old Florida” vibes, close proximity to TJM’s home city, and great opportunity to reposition a decaying property and restore it back to its glory days. TJM has invested nearly $1M into the property and will continue to invest in the property with a comprehensive restoration plan. Now the property is known as The Treasure Island Ocean Club, and has since been gaining popularity. The most recent of its renovations is the addition of a property level beach bar for its guests. Treasure Islettes elected a New Board for 2015-2016. The new board includes Ms. Mary Cox, President; Ms. Marian Alton, Vice president; Ms. Toni Hawkins, Treasurer; and Ms. Suzanne Schiltz, Secretary. Mayor Bob Minning of Treasure Island had the honor to install the newly elected Treasure Islettes Board on April 27, 2015. The Treasure Islettes was founded in 1955 to support the community through volunteer service, beautification projects, scholarships and donations to the City Police and Fire Departments. The Treasure Islettes meet on the fourth Monday evening of each month from September to May at the Treasure Island Community Center. More info call VP Marian Alton at 360-0164. The Treasure Island & Madeira Beach Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has unanimously selected two organizations as the Official 2015 Chamber Charities: R.O.C. Park and the American Legion, Post 158. ROC Park’s (Remember Our Children) purpose is to provide a serene setting for remembrance, recreation and meditation. It occupies a spot on the north side of Tom Stuart Causeway next to the new 9-1-1 memorial. The American Legion is the nation's largest and most influential network of U.S. wartime veterans, families and communities. For more information, visit www.ROCPARK.com, www.Legion.org or www.treasureisland.org.

OLD SALT FISHING hosted another successful King of the Beach! They had 372 boats out fishing the weekend of April 30-May 2, 2015 for King and Spanish Mackerel for this bi-annual event. Team Jaws II brought a giant King to the scale and took the lead with the fish weighing 49.12lbs and Capt. Dave Mistretta was proclaimed ‘King’ of the Beach! As he was accepting his awards and checks he gave quite a speech that silenced the crowd, he announced he was donating $10,000 of his winnings to his friend, fellow fisherman and avid writer, Jon West. Jon has been recently diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and is fighting for his life. It is truly amazing how our fishing community can come together and support each other. Team Reel Dirty donated their winnings as well. It was a moving moment – not only a win, but a true charitable act. KUDOS to the Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Band ST PETERSBURG
The great Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Band, a weekly entertainment fixture for more than 50 years at the Bilmar Beach Resort in Treasure Island,
Graciously donated their services on May 9 to play for the Pinellas County Gator Club’s International Gator Day “Thank You Vets!” event at the WC Young Bay Pines VA Center. More than 160-plus vets, VA staff and Gator volunteers enjoyed the smooth jazz renditions, plus a stirring medley of US service branch anthems. Among the band’s key players are trumpeter Bobby Tessitore, who has played on and off about 22 years, and drummer Roger Athans, the last original member who started in 1968 for four or five months, then came back in June 1973 and has played ever since. The other four members of the current band are keyboardist Dean Fernald, bassist John Lamb – formerly with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, clarinetist Bob Tanguay, and trombonist Gordon Moore.
As the last original member still with the band, Athans recalls, “We’ve always been a six-man group and while we only made one recording as a group over the years, as individuals we’ve each done our own projects. In 1968 a 33 1/3 LP was recorded in the Beach Bar at the Bilmar and we also made a tape recording as an 8-track and then a cassette.” The band has been at the Bilmar since 1964, except for 2006 during renovation. Clyde Smith, the resort’s General Manager the past nine years, notes, “The band has a great local following and usually plays in Bazzie’s Beach Bar and for the winter tourist season moves into the Crystal Ballroom for the larger crowds. It’s one of the strongest and longest traditions at the Bilmar and we marked the band's historic 4,000th performance on August 1, 2009.”

Twilight On the Town Summer Evening Walking Tours! Steamy days make cool evenings seem even more pleasant! Enjoy the beautiful evenings by joining St. Petersburg Preservation (SPP) for one of their monthly evening summer stroll walking tours. These shortened tours (about an hour or so) end at a local restaurant or brew pub allowing conversations to continue along with a cool drink and an opportunity to purchase some great food from a local business. Next tour - Wednesday, June 17 takes in one of our favorite neighborhoods, Historic Kenwood. Historic Kenwood, the city’s first designated artist enclave district, is known for its great collection of bungalow homes. The area is an excellent example of what makes St. Pete special - historic neighborhoods! Keeping these neighborhoods special for the future is one reason SPP is advocating amending the city’s preservation ordinance to make the historic district application process a neighborhood friendly process. The Historic Kenwood ‘Twilight on the Town’ tour starts 6:30 pm at Cappy’s Pizza, 2900 1st Ave. N. Come early or stay after the tour for some great pizza! Make your tour reservation! SPP walking tours are free to SPP members, just $5/non-members. Reservations recommended but not required. Visit St. Petersburg Preservation online: www.stpetepreservation.org

Bakeries have made a huge comeback on the beach since the height of the low-carb craze. Perhaps the best example is La Casa Del Pane, which moved out of hiding next to Gigi’s in St. Pete Beach to their own new freestanding building next to Waffle House and across Gulf Blvd. from the new Shells. Six days each week, you can get the bread and pastries baked fresh that day. No preservatives are used, making the bread far healthier than commercial loaves. The bakery specializes in traditional Italian brick oven white and semolina breads with and without sesame seeds. Take a look at the deli and pastry cases, offering delicious cookies and house-baked pastries. Take dinner home ready to heat and eat from the cooler, or choose one of your favorites from theselection of gourmet groceries, some favorites with visitors. Stop in to pick up your daily or weekly loaf, or stay and have a sandwich or order a pizza, and have a great cup of coffee while you wait. Tables are available indoors or out. 7110 Gulf Blvd., St. Pete Beach. Call 727.367.8322 www.LaCasaDelPane.US
Italian Bakeries Popular on the Beaches

Later in June Verducci Gourmet Italian Bakery & Market is set to cut its inaugural ribbon. Proprietor partner Vinny Fortunato proudly guided a mini-tour of the new facility as it was being stocked with “the very best foods available from Italy, and some surprisingly special locally produced Opening products,“ according to Vinny. “We can’t sell the very best without charging for it, but you can tell from Late in June our menu prices we are not here to gouge anyone. We have been on the beach a while and we plan to stay. We hope to make customers of the residents for a lifetime. When you try some of the products we will be offering you will never be satisfied with supermarket food again. If you like to have the very best, you can now have it without leaving the beach. Put 727.201.9740 in your cellphone. Visit the market at 7800 Blind Pass Road, St. Pete Beach. www.VerducciStPeteBeach.com St. Pete Beach and vicinity has an incredible number of restaurants with pizza ovens. There is no doubt that Italian cuisine is the favorite foreign choice for local diners and visitors alike. All of these places also offer sandwiches served on bread, generally freshbaked on the premises. These favorites stretch from Su Ottovu on Pass-a-Grille’s Eighth Ave. north past Gennaro’s, 21st Ave. at 2004 Pass-A-Grille Way, a wonderful second generation, mom & pop Italian restaurant, open EVERY Day for Dinner. north from there, you’ll pass at least a half dozen restaurants serving pizza before you reach the newest Italian restaurant, A Slice of New York at 595 Corey Ave., behind Chill. The Loggerhead is the most common species of sea turtle that nests on Florida beaches. It is distinguished by its massive block-like head and strong, crushing jaw that breaks clams, mollusks and crabs! On average this sea turtle can weigh 275 pounds & reaches around 3 feet in length. Their shell or carapace is a brown muddled color with a yellow color underneath and is shaped broader near the front and narrowing toward the rear of the turtle. Although not known for their speed in short spurts, loggerheads are known for their endurance when it comes to long distance migration. Source: myfwc.com
Be a Bird Steward! St. Pete Audubon Needs Your Help for Beach Bird Nesting Season Beach bird nesting season has begun on local beaches. The biggest threat to beach-nesting birds is disturbance from people visiting the beach. This threat increases when beachnesting birds lay their eggs in spring and summer. Volunteers are needed for a few hours each weekend from Memorial Day through Labor Day at Fort De Soto Park, Indian Shores, St. Pete Beach, Egmont Key and 3 Rooker Bar. If you would like to help the birds have a successful nesting season, please join St. Pete Audubon in making a difference this year. AFFORDABLE COMPUTER SERVICES GET REAL ABOUT PROPERTY Travels Through Real Estate Law
BY THOMAS A. BRODERSEN, ESQ.
HERE WE GO AGAIN Five huge Wall Street Banks fined a total of Five Billion Dollars, in this case for distorting international interest and currency conversion rates to benefit themselves at the expense of, well, everybody else. You don’t sound surprised. I can’t say that I am, either. As a matter of fact, either one of us could have predicted it, and probably did. After all, when you’re made out of money, the way these huge banks are, how can taking just a bit of your money really hurt you? No individual officer got criminally charged, and NO ONE went to jail. Lawbreaking is suddenly much less risky than even gambling. When jail is off the table, the risk is like you or I having to pay for our own groceries, just a lot less. So why stop now? And, of course, they don’t. Ever! Year after year, one Billion-dollar settlement after another, till you lose count. It’s not just banking, or Microsoft engaging in wildly anti-competitive behavior, it’s General Motors, and air bag defects that kill hundreds of Americans. There is something fundamentally wrong with a legal system that makes it possible for some to
completely ignore the law. A corporation can’t go to jail, and, though they can be broken up, it never happens any more. Not being human, corporations have no fear of getting caught. The only hope we have of governing such essentially amoral entities lies in making sure their officers and employees are personally afraid to break the law on the corporations behalf. But that is off the table. There is a reason that voices like Elizabeth Warren & Bernie Sanders are starting to sound so reasonable. It is becoming more and more clear that the game IS rigged against the middle-class lawabiding citizen. The stage is set by the huge pay CEO’s are paid. Add the Golden Parachutes, paid whether the officer makes money for the company in the traditional sense (by earning it in the marketplace), or whether they follow the law. For decades, we’ve operated under the notion that the best interests of society are not a proper concern of corporate officers. We are finally revisiting that sick idea, and hopefully we will see the other side, at least a few days before Miami sinks beneath the waves.

Michael Shelby, from Madeira Beach, reported catching just barely legal speckled sea trout from the beach on the west side of John’s Pass Bridge using a D.O.A. shrimp. Chris Hubbard ironically unrelated and from Tampa, reported catching Sheepshead and Flounder on live shrimp under the John’s Pass Bridge. He said the flounder were biting on the bottom while sheepsheads were taking it further up in the water column as his shrimp drifted to the bottom. Kayak anglers paddling the beaches reported the sharks were biting well on cut ladyfish. We didn’t get a specific report because they didn’t want to stop fishing to talk, that’s how on fire their fishing was. John Gray, from Seminole, was fishing behind Hubbard’s Marina from our beach. He was outfitted with large tackle because the night before he was using 30lb braid with a 50lb leader while using live pinfish for bait. He hooked something so large a locked down drag on a large spinning reel couldn’t slow down the big fish. Sounds to us like he hooked into a big black drum or cobia
but it remains a fish story till he can re-hook him again tonight! Victor Vizaro, from Pinellas Park, reports the snook bite on the beach at the beginning of the outgoing tide to be hot. He is catching big snook using live threads or horse minnows free lined into the surf. He reports the flats to be on fire catching trout, redfish and snook in the mornings and afternoon when it’s not too hot outside. He reported fishing the edges and holes at low tide using white bait and chunk lady fish as chum to wake up the flats. He likes using suspended twitch baits and top waters during low light conditions to encourage bites.
Near shore Grass and slime is a HUGE problem right now in our near shore waters. Seems like the grass is extra slimy and extra early this year and is spread from 20-90 foot. You can find clean water pockets but it’s difficult and when we return to the same clean area the next day we find it loaded down with grass and slime. Fish have trouble finding your baits and when the grass and slime gets on your tackle fish can see it and won’t feed quite as easily. This has caused the red grouper bite to become tricky and finicky but they are biting best on stinky strips of cut squid wings. Hogfish are hitting live or dead shrimp in 30-50 foot of water. They seem to be less affected by the grass and slime since they typically hang higher in the water
column. Live shrimp on a light jig-head or nekid ball jig helps you to drift slowly to bottom and hopefully get that hog before the slime gets your rig. Big sea bass are being found regularly now in the near shore waters hitting just about any bait. Kingfish are spreading out more but you can still find a few schoolie around occasionally if you have the tackle to target them. We keep flat lines out all summer for these fish and in the deeper water we have flat lines out with free-lined pinfish on bare hooks to target blackfin tuna. The gags have showed up in force and were looking forward to the July gag grouper opener.
Offshore Our recent offshore fishing trip was a 63 hour mutton snapper special fishing
135 miles south west of the pass and about 85 miles west of Fort Myers. We nailed some big boy mutton with the largest hitting 18lbs. We also found some monster Carborita grouper also called True Black grouper. This one large ledge we found was covered up with carbos so large we broke off over 20 of them because we simply couldn’t turn these monster grouper. Even with 130150lb leaders they were snapping it like it was 40lb leader in a shark’s mouth. Mangrove snapper were biting well too and were still finding them super fat due to their summer spawn. Kingfish and tuna were super spread out in the warmer offshore waters to our south, but west of us were still hitting them even in the 40-50 mile range. PN

FISHING is the Foundation Sport for Florida Tourism Boating and water sports have long been the main attractions, along with the beaches. Many local communities had reputations as “quaint drinking villages with fishing problems.” Captain Kenneth B. Merry after whom Merry Pier is named, was a Pass-a-Grille resident since 1900. It says so on page 5 of Frank Hurley’s first book about “Pass-a-Grille, Surf, Sand and Postcard Sunsets”. On page 22, in the same chapter, it says the very name of this town likely came from fishermen who camped there almost 200 years ago. In 1837 for example, Capt. William Bunce, after whom Bunce’s Pass (near Tierra Verde) was named, set up a ‘fish ranchero’ on an island that is now part of Fort DeSoto. He earned a tidy sum in the day selling salt mullet and roe to Cuba, an industry that still persists today, though with other trading partners. There were fishing guides in the area since the first tourists came. The mouth of Charlotte Harbor has been a famous Tarpon fishing attraction for wealthy industrialists and others who discovered Boca Grande, a couple of hours south of Pass-a-Grille by land. Yet Pass-a-Grille was easier to get to, and there were plenty of fish to catch here, including huge grouper, shark, sailfish, dolphin, tarpon, the great kingfish, and too many other good sport and eating fish to name. One of the names that seems synonymous with fishing in our area is Hubbard. Read a fishing column from them each month in your Paradise NEWS. PN

One little pig built a house on sand, another on pilings and the third bought flood insurance and didn’t care. None of the 3 little pigs knew enough to make an informed decision. A recent Harris poll rated real estate agents / brokers last out of 23 prestigious professions. We were behind union leaders, stockbrokers and bankers. We handle most people’s most cherished possession and largest single asset. Agents are independent contractors who work for brokers who were independent contractors themselves. Hence, we have very little accountability in our industry and poor ratings with our buyers and sellers. In my opinion the main value to you of a real estate agent is her or his ability to gather and transmit knowledge. Most agents have a little knowledge about a lot of areas but few have a lot of knowledge about your area. When you find an agent who focuses on your needs they can earn much, much more than you pay them. Interview at least 3 agents and hire the one who has the most knowledge about what you need. A great negotiator can save you much more than the money you pay. “When you represent yourself in

a legal case, you have a fool for a lawyer.” Even if you hire a lawyer you’d better get one who knows about your needs and wants. Same with the real estate broker you hire. Did you know that many brokers don’t represent you even if you think they do? If your agreement doesn’t specifically spell out that they represent you, they don’t? Our Pinellas barrier island properties have features, advantages and benefits, which are very different from other properties. Do you know what they are? Find out. It could mean spending or saving tens of thousands of dollars. My passion is to be a significant force in the re-construction of beach properties. Most of our properties were built during the boom years of the 60s, 70s, 80s 90s and early 2000s. Florida real estate goes in cycles. We are now in an up cycle of uncertain duration. Since nobody knows the top or the bottom of a cycle, forget about buying or selling there. Many homes are very tired, inefficient and can be renovated or rebuilt. Find out if your property is suited for some financing options to help make this happen. How’s your seawall or beach? What’s your main floor elevation? What’s your foundation like?
What’s your equity today? What are the building codes in your city? Shouldn’t you know, even if you don’t plan on selling? Can you legally rent rather than sell, if you have to move? These questions are relatively easy to answer for an agent who focuses and very difficult for those who don’t. You don’t want a real estate hobbyist working on maximizing your investment. In my opinion, there is no better overall value than Florida Beach real estate. Since the land is so valuable, let’s work together to make it look prettier and be more functional. We hope you are part of our beach renaissance. Ask for answers from the trusted advisor who gave you this article. You’ll be happy you did and hopefully well rewarded financially. In the last two years Downtown St. Petersburg has witnessed a boom like never before. Restaurants & breweries are inundating downtown and Fourth Street North, charming visitors from the four corners of the earth. It’s a bustling “Restaurant Row” along scenic Beach Drive overlooking the Bay, yet some of the finest are located at the new Sundial complex (once called “Baywalk”) masterminded by entrepreneur Bill Edwards.
Sea Salt, the most lavish of the
new eateries is 12,000 square feet with 300 indoor-outdoor seats for those seeking an adventure in dining. Fresh finfish and shellfish are the focus here, yet there are good choices for carnivores and vegetarians as well. The owner, Fabrizio Aieli, gets an “A” for affable. Originally from the Adriatic coast of Venice, Italy, he and his Slovakian wife Ingrid began their adventure by first vacationing in Naples, Florida for a few years. They were so enthralled with the climate that they decided to buy a house, open a gelateria, then launch Sea Salt, which was an immediate success. In fact, Esquire magazine named it one of the nation’s best new restaurants, noted for ‘Venetian World Cuisine.’ Witnessing the rapid growth of our downtown restaurant scene, Fabrizio and Ingrid expanded Sea Salt to downtown St. Petersburg in February 2015.

DINING OUT
I was fortunate to dine at the Naples restaurant when it first opened, and was instantly impressed with the contemporary specialties which featured artisanal and locally sourced ingredients. Fish was perfectly grilled, pasta was as sophisticated as at any Venetian restaurant, and beef entrees were simply sumptuous. Having lived in Rome, Italy for a year, I appreciated the authenticity of the cuisine. One of the most interesting aspects is Chef Fabrizio’s culinary philosophy: when the proper salts are utilized, they not only heighten enjoyment, but add healthful qualities. History relates how salt was highly prized in ancient times, especially by the Phoenicians. The exchange rate, in fact, was said to be equal to gold. Likewise, Fabrizio’s selection is over the top, with an assortment of bedazzling salts, like Murray River Pink from Australia, Mayan Sun from El Salvador and Pyramid from Bali.

The oyster selection is impressive. It claims 80 feet of one side of a most spacious bar, containing at least two dozen of the best varieties anywhere. Finfish is purchased locally, but also shipped from Europe and carefully inspected before being prepared — the mark of a true Chef. To complement the cuisine is an impressive selection of 7000 plus wines housed in a 20-foot-tall wine tower. Yet, not only is Fabrizio good at running restaurants, but he’s also Chef de Cuisine a cookbook author, acclaimed enough that Coleman Andrews, a noted food writer and editorial director of TheDailyMeal.com, wrote the forward to this remarkable 232 page full-color cookbook, a bargain at $35. Andrews sings the praises of Fabrizio, verifying that he and his restaurants are certainly worth their salt. If the weather’s good, choose to dine alfresco, at the huge comfy bar, or at one of many comfortable indoor tables. Entrees range from the high 20s to 50s, but if you’re watching your wallet, grab a seat at the bar and order a few of the innovative appetizers. Happy Hour is not to be missed. Drink prices are a bargain.

Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse Another popular Happy Hour is just across the way at Ruth’s Chris, a chain made famous by the legendary Ruth Fertel, a passionate and tenacious entrepreneur who expanded the restaurant from one location to a national success. If you plan on stopping by for a drink after work, get there early and enjoy the Happy Hour specials. The comfy four-sided bar is always packed. The opening of this restaurant was special for me since I was fortunate to have known Ruth Fertel, the legendary founder, for a number of years. I first met Ruth as a guest on my “Eat It!” food talk show on WQYK radio in St. Petersburg. Steaks in tow, she and executive chef decided to cook their steaks “on-air.” The intense heat generated by cooking the steaks set off the station’s massive alarm system. That was Ruth, always making a notable entrance. Besides quality steaks, Ruth loved her vodka. We had many interesting conversations about food and wine and what she expected from her employees, basically “perfection”. After the show she sent me a personally engraved director’s chair in appreciation for having her as a guest on the show. Her attention to detail was staggering. On a recent visit, I found that the steak house has only improved. For appetizers, my guest and I shared the veal osso buco ravioli, the broiled mushrooms with jumbo lump crab and Ruth’s Chop Salad with lemon basil dressing. Yum! For our main course the porterhouse for two had the flavor of a great strip steak and the melt-in-mouth tenderness of a filet. For dessert we ordered a luscious bread pudding with whisky sauce and a perfect Crème Brulee. Service was perfect. (Ruth’s Chris is located at 131 2nd Ave. N., St. Petersburg, Florida 33701. LOCALE MARKET AND CHEF DE CUISINE PHOTO ON PRIOR PAGE - BY JOYCE LAFRAY
Gourmet Locale Market On both the first and second level of Sundial is another welcome addition to the St. Petersburg food scene. Locale, a 20,000 square foot, two-story marketplace/ restaurant is the brainchild of James Beard Award-winning Chef Michael Mina and celebrated Chef Don Pintabona. The talented duo present a world-class market, with 11 separate kitchens, the design somewhat similar to Eataly, New York City’s famous market. The central theme revolves around a variety of cuisine at the kitchens, each with their own sous chefs, offering monthly seasonal menus. Choices include take-out or eat-in at tables downstairs, a cozy wine-beer bar upstairs, or the patios downstairs and overlooking the Sundial courtyard. There’s aged prime beef, farm-to-table organic produce and meats, fresh caught fish such as cobia, snapper and grouper, and an excellent organic produce area. Cheeses and preserved meats in the upstairs Charcuterie kitchen are some of the best you’ll ever taste. There’s also a FarmTable Kitchen (call ahead) where guests can experience the best of the local farms and purveyors for a pricey but worthy multi-course meal.

Kitchens carry about five selections containing a few sides, most under $15 and menus change often. There’s sushi, sashimi, and a potpourri of entrees to satisfy even the most persnickety of patrons. COVER STORY
Sports + Tourism
= Great Partners Story by STEVE TRAIMAN
While the weather and the beaches are the biggest attraction for visitors to Florida, sports teams have long played a major role in supporting tourism, our primary industry on the barrier islands.
W
hile the islands do not have the land or the parking to host actual games of any size, the hospitality industry hosts a lot of players and fans while the sports are being practiced and during regular seasons. Al Lang Stadium in downtown St. Petersburg has a long history of hosting major league spring training and international baseball games, and now professional soccer. The connection to the beaches is undeniable. The New York Yankees had an agreement with the Don CeSar Hotel when it opened in 1929 that helped the resort survive the great depression ... The Miami Dolphins used to practice where Dolphin Village Shopping Center now stands in St. Pete Beach, as just two examples. Sports facilities have long been the biggest benefactor of bed tax dollars not spent on marketing. Kevin White, Director of the St. Pete/Clearwater Sports Commission (SPCSC), told Paradise News, “For budget year 2013 – 2014 that ended last September 30, we recorded an estimated 120,000 room nights of business associated with sports tourism. That was approximately 82,000 sports tourism visitors with an estimated economic impact of $29 million.”
“We continue to host youth sports and college training during the year. The youth market continues to be strong and helps with keeping the destination busy during off-peak times of the year,” he added. Today, Tampa Bay benefits from professional baseball, football, hockey and soccer teams, plus a host of bowl games, and a bit of University competition that helps to enhance the fabric of our multi-billion dollar hospitality industry. Add in some more unconventional sports like Windsurfing, Paddleboarding and Dragon Boat Racing, and it’s a broad spectrum of major sporting events.
Growing Watersports Capital The area also has been a long-time center of major sailing events including the Morgan Invasion, as well as surfing, windsurfing, paddleboarding and Dragon Boat racing to mention a few.

Our home teams are doing their best to keep up fan enthusiasm. At press time, The MLB Tampa Bay Rays were battling the Yankees for top spot in the close American League East; our Tampa Bay Lightning were fighting the New York Rangers for the NHL Eastern Conference championship to reach the Stanley Cup Final; the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are very optimistic about a much better season with No. 1 draft pick Jameis Winston as the new quarterback; and the NASL Rowdies were in the hunt for top spot in the Spring Season.
The most recent major events are the RS:X Youth 2014 World Windsurfing Championships (WWC) October 18-24 off Clearwater Beach, the WPA Paddleboarding Championships October 24-26 off St Pete Beach with the Sirata Beach Resort as host (see November 2014 issue), the Florida Cup on Madeira Beach this May and the March’s Annual 300 Mile Everglades Watertribe Challenge. “Our Commission helped secure both events,” Smith added. “With the assistance of Rob Mirlenbrink, WPA Region 5 President, we reached out to the WPA National Office that we would like to be their East Coast partner and host the 2014 World Championships. With the help of our local Stand-up Paddleboard groups, the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber, the City of St. Pete Beach, and the Sirata Beach Resort the event was secured. With the commitment of WPA our area will host a regional Championship each year we do not host the World Championship occurring every four years.”

Tampa held its first Dragon Boat races in 2004 and two years later hosted the national championships. It won its bid for the biennial world races in 2007, becoming just the second U.S. city to host the event. This past April 25, the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Club hosted the 13th annual Tampa Bay International Dragon Boat Festival. In August 2011, 2,000 athletes from 17 countries competed for the sport’s top title in the World Dragon Boat Racing Championships with six days of races and other events in downtown Tampa.
Clearwater & Dunedin MLB Ties Both Clearwater and Dunedin have benefited from longtime MLB ties. The MLB Philadelphia Phillies have been training in Clearwater since 1947. Carpenter Field, built in 1967, was used in Spring Training by the Phillies’ major league and Minor League players, along with teams in the Florida State League, Gulf Coast Rookie League and the Florida Instructional League. Grapefruit League games are played in the $28 million, 8,800-capacity Bright House Field, opened in 2004, with the affiliate Class A Clearwater Threshers playing their Florida State League games there. From 1977 until 1989, the MLB Toronto Blue Jays played at the 3,417-seat Grant Field in Dunedin. In 1990 the City built a larger $2.4 million Dunedin Stadium, and in 2000 the Jays signed a new 15-year agreement pending a $12 million renovation to what is now the 5,509-seat Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. It also hosts the Jays’ Class A Florida State League affiliate Dunedin Blue Jays. The city also has built the nearby Bobby Mattick Training Center with five full-sized diamonds and an artificial turf half-field. Both cities acknowledge the importance of the tourism dollars both the MLB and Class A teams bring in each year. For Paradise News, Mayor George Cretekos noted, “Clearwater has been the spring training home of the Philadelphia Phillies since 1947 and the team’s facilities 34

at Bright House Field and the adjoining Carpenter Complex are some of the finest in all of Major League Baseball. The economic impact of the Phillies to Clearwater surpasses $125 million, but just as important is the community involvement throughout the year of the Phillies and its minor league affiliate, the FSL Clearwater Threshers. “Because Clearwater is the second home of the Phillies, Pinellas County businesses, charities and individuals have benefitted from that partnership. That relationship has also helped the city become a sports destination for soccer to softball... for lacrosse to beach volleyball… for all age groups. In addition, it has opened up new opportunities for the city and other municipalities with Major League Soccer League teams to expand their training operations in Clearwater and Pinellas County.” Mayor George Cretekos said. Most recent figures available for the City of Clearwater are for the 2013 Philadelphia Phillies Spring Training, with estimated direct spending of $79.48 million from 142,787 attendees, more than 75% out of state or out of county, with a cumulative number of 205,732 hotel/motel nights. Indirect and induced spending elsewhere in Florida of $55.6 million made a total of $135.1 million economic impact to the City, County and State. Dunedin Mayor Julie Ward Bujalski told Paradise News, “The Toronto Blue Jays have had their Spring Training home in Dunedin since 1977. We are proud to say that unlike other teams, the Jays have only had one home for Spring Training and Dunedin is it. “Our most recent economic studies show that the Jays bring roughly $80 million into our region every year. Some 60% of Spring Training visitors come from either outside the county or outside the state. Therefore, they are a strong attractor of tourism to not only our city but to our region on a whole. Because Dunedin does not have a large hotel stock, the surrounding communities truly benefit from our Spring Training visitors. And of course, our delightful downtown thrives on any given game day.” “Our current contract will expire in 2017 so we are in

and play regular season games in the same city in almost 90 years. In 2006, the Rays, seeking to expand their fan base across the Tampa Bay area, decided to move their spring training operations to Charlotte Sports Park about 80 miles south. They played their last spring training ballgame at Al Lang Stadium on March 28, 2008.
negotiations for our next long-term deal. We are actively working with the Blue Jays as well as County and State officials to financially partner on a remodeled facility that will dramatically improve the overall experience for our residents, visitors and team.”
Al Lang Field: 100 Years Plus! Now home to the NASL Tampa Bay Rowdies, historic Al Lang Stadium had its origins in 1914 when local businessman Al Lang brought the MLB St. Louis Browns for spring training to Coffee Pot Park, a small park just south of the current stadium site. After Lang’s successful term as Mayor from 1916-19, he devoted his life to building a successful relationship between baseball and Florida. With his support, the City built St. Petersburg Athletic Park – aka Waterfront Park in 1923 on the current site of Al Lang Stadium, which was built in 1947 and named in his honor. The St. Louis Cardinals and New York Yankees shared the new ballpark in its first spring training season, and other teams including the Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Braves also used the site. In 1998 the expansion Tampa Bay Devil Rays began using the stadium for spring training. With their regular season home at Tropicana Field approximately one mile west, the Devil Rays became the first major league team to train
In 2011, the soccer team FC Tampa Bay of the North American Soccer League announced it would move to Al Lang Stadium from George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. This ended three years in which the stadium had no long-term tenant. Al Lang Stadium subsequently underwent minor renovations to convert it into a soccer facility, with temporary seats added on the grass along the sidelines to increase capacity. The team played its first game at Al Lang on April 9, 2011, and later changed its name to the Tampa Bay Rowdies, after the historical team that had played from 1975 to 1993.
‘New’ Rowdies Take Over On October 27, 2012, the Tampa Bay Rowdies became the 2012 NASL Champions by winning the two-leg Soccer Bowl against the Minnesota Stars at Al Lang Stadium. It was the first time that a major championship was held at the site. In 2013, the Rowdies signed a lease extension keeping the team at Al Lang Stadium through the 2016 season. Bill Edwards, local businessman and philanthropist, became majority owner in December 2013, and last October brokered a deal with the City that gave his Big 3 Entertainment company management control of Al Lang Stadium for the next four years. As part of the arrangement, the facility would no longer be used for spring baseball, and Edwards agreed to complete $1.5 million in renovations as he sought to make Al Lang more soccer friendly. When the Rowdies opened their 2014 Spring Season that April, the Stadium had more than 1,100 new premium Midfield seats as the first phase of expansion announced JUNE-JULY 2015

by Edwards. The premium Midfielder’s Club, about 10 feet from the pitch, features 212 seats that wrap around newly integrated players’ benches, and 996 Midfield Reserved seats are available. Additionally, Midfielder’s Club members enjoy a Club Badge for food and drink specials and access to the exclusive field-level Midfielder’s Club Lounge, outfitted with flat screen TV’s and full food and beverage service. For the new Spring Season currently ongoing, Edwards noted these added improvements. “We did a total overhaul from top to bottom of the stadium, with a new field five yards wider and closer to the crowd for much better viewing; a new huge Daktronics videoboard for replays; new locker rooms that had visiting teams comment ‘Wow! Better than our own!’; all new seats with more legroom so capacity is now about 7,100; and an added 38 HDTV’s around the stadium concourses. “The Midfielder’s Club is doing awesome and we sold out two of our first three home games, with three more through June 3. We’re three points behind the Cosmos (on May 19) and if we win the season are guaranteed one of four playoff spots. Fall season home opener is July 4 versus the Atlanta Silverbacks and runs through October 31.” “We’re having a continuing impact on local tourism, starting with Downtown St. Pete. Games are over around 9:15 so our fans can easily feed into downtown restaurants and bars, including our own new Rowdies Den that came out really well.” “We’re seeing a lot of visiting fans when we play Canada, New York, Atlanta or Jacksonville that came in several buses with their own drum team. We’re also getting a lot of visitors from other countries where soccer is a lot bigger.” “Last year was ‘figure it out‘ with a team and stadium I inherited. For 2015, we kept only four players and started fresh with a complete stadium overhaul. They’ve only been together for five months and are challenging for the top spot. You will hear me say repeatedly, I intend to build the best team in American soccer, and deliver the best fan experience!” 36

Looking Ahead SPCSC’s Smith see more top sports in the future, noting ,“The Sports Commission will be working with several National Governing Bodies and event organizers during 2015 – 2016 to host Olympic qualifying events throughout the county. This includes Sand Volleyball, BMX racing and Sailing. We are continuing to work with the USOC and other USA affiliated bodies to host athletes and events in the destination in preparation for the 2016 Rio Summer Games. “The St. Pete/Clearwater area hosted the 2015 49er and 49er FX North American Sailing Championship February 6-9, and will have the 2016 Olympic Class NACRA 17, 49er and 49er FX World Sailing Championships February 7-14. With our continuing focus on watersports, our location continues to be an elite area and a perfect match for these types of events.” “We continue to host youth sports and college training during the year, as the youth market continues to be strong and helps with keeping the destination busy during off peak times of the year.” “We are fortunate to live in a place where sports, arts and culture are such a big part of our communities. When we host world-class events, everyone can see what a truly great place this is to visit. ” said Smith. PN

“Art Around the World,” Tampa Bay’s only inclusionary summer camp, announces seventh year
Creative Clay’s seventh annual summer camp, “Art Around the World,” June 8-July 31, is an art-themed culturally educational camp that allows participants to choose among four countries of study: China, Peru, Ghana and Romania. “Art Around the World” is the area’s only inclusionary camp, allowing children with disabilities and neuro-typically developing children to participate together in a camp setting. “Art Around the World” allows Creative Clay to further expand its vision and outreach of making the arts accessible to all. Our goal is to expand our programs and fill a significant gap in community services available to children with disabilities by providing an age-appropriate arts-based curriculum in a safe, professional and stimulating environment. Combining the children offers a multitude of benefits and productive outcomes. With every individual and group interaction,
each student grows and learns from the other. Uniting the children in one classroom reflects our goal to demonstrate the value and contribution of each child regardless of age, gender, ability and/or race. “Art Around the World” began with funding by The Queen’s Court, and has been successful, reporting a 30 percent rate of returning campers and consistent funding support from individual donors as well as foundation funding. This camp has also received funding from the White Family Foundation and the Rays Foundation. Campers’ art work will be on display for one week following the camp at the St. Petersburg Museum of History. Camp will be held at The Clay Center of St. Petersburg, 400 23rd St. S, St. Petersburg. For more information, to register online, or to apply for a camp scholarship, please visit: http://www.creativeclay.org/ program/summer-youth-camp 727.825.0515 www.creativeclay.org

June & July 2015 Astrology
JUNE: A beautiful Full Rose Moon in Sagittarius graces the night sky on the 2nd, bringing high energy, creativity and maybe a little bit of unpredictable luck! Then get ready for the exciting and dramatic in love and art as Venus enters Leo on the 5th. Watch your budget this month as well as her union with Jupiter grows closer every day! Mercury stations direct in Gemini on the 11th, and we can finally inch forward again as the shadow dissipates over the next two weeks. Scorpios get their last visit from Saturn on the 15th & begin to complete their karmic cycle of the last three years. A New Moon in Gemini on the 16th begins our next lunar cycle with a burst of power for new beginnings! Then we welcome our first day of summer with the Summer Solstice in Cancer occurring on the 21st. Fiery Mars enters sensitive, home loving Cancer on the 24th bringing all of the strength and energy you need for those summer projects around the house, and then to take you away for an adventure! We will all be more sensitive now so be kind and have fun!
JULY: A powerful Full Thunder Moon occurs in Capricorn on the 1st that will bring current issues to a peak and offer creative ways to transform them. Mercury planet of reasoning visits the intuitive sign of Cancer on the 8th until the 23rd. Listen to those hunches, but don’t let emotions make your decisions. The New Moon cycle in Cancer begins on the 15th initiating fresh opportunities to create stability in areas that have been stressful. Love goddess Venus visits practical, perfectionist Virgo on the 18th, lending them her favors and popularity for a few weeks. We will base our romantic decisions on fact and logic now. Then, step back and bow as the glorious Sun enters its own domain of Leo on the 22nd! This transit of the sun allows us to be more selfexpressive, generous and enthusiastic while doing things in big ways with big hearts! Mercury joins the Sun in Leo on the 23rd adding a bit of drama to our speech and thoughts that comes straight from 52

F I N A L Word by Julian Fant T H E F I C K L E I N L ET S O F F LO R I D A he recent rescue of two youngsters from the swift waters of Johns Pass brings to mind just how dangerous and changeable these inlets can be, all up and down both coasts of our state. The earliest maps of St. Augustine (circa 1565), show the inlet into the Atlantic to be almost due east of the massive fortress constructed by the Spanish in the 1600s. Years later, the inlet had shifted about a mile to the south, and was used by the hundreds of shrimp boats as they went into the Atlantic and returned each day. When this inlet became too shallow, a new one was cut by huge dredges in almost the identical location as the original! Use of these inlets by early settlers could be dangerous. This fact was borne out when my Dad and I discovered the remains of an old wooden ship, exposed after a northeast storm. It was put together with wooden pegs, and further exploration of the remains yielded a huge glass jug, which was examined by curators, and said to have come from a Dutch

sailing ship of the late 1600s, which wrecked while making an attempt to enter the inlet into the Oldest City. The John’s Pass inlet has changed its course a number of times, as have many others on both coasts. In addition, an outgoing tide, opposed by an onshore wind can capsize boats of varying size. The slightest lapse can result in a sudden disaster, and this has happened more than once in a number of these passages, both natural and man made. The swift current on the south side of Johns Pass created major problems for the first replacement of the original low level span. Relatively soon after it was opened to traffic, stress cracks were noted on the south end. Upon examination by divers, it was found that a number of the concrete pilings had been undermined, and were providing NO support at all! Emergency repairs were made by the DOT, and the latest high level bridge was constructed with much longer and larger pilings, averting a potential major disaster.
