PUBLISHERS MESSAGE Is it more than coincidence that Thanksgiving comes at the end of Hurricane season? This year we have more than ever to be thankful for. We do not have to look far to see suffering in the wake of Harvey, Irma and Maria. Thousands remain without power and running water in the islands, including the U.S Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Flood damage in Jacksonville to the east and Texas to the west. It seems too, that even the threat of a storm will bring out neighborly love in folks around here. It goes without saying that a feeling of gratitude and thankfulness should replace the stress we’ve all felt due to the warnings of impending disaster that went on for days on end. Speaking about gratitude, we have heard stories of neighbors helping one another prepare and endure, helping move sand bags, and those with power sharing with those waiting. Neighbors here care. That caring is part of Paradise. We are thankful for our readers, our freinds, our neighbors, our children and our pets. We are thankful for our health, our kids’ health, our pet’s health, and our insurance, which helps to give us peace of mind. We are thankful for good hospitals and specialists in so many areas on the cutting edge of healthcare. We are thankful for an improving infrastructure and the amenities of life. The choices we have are almost mind boggling. In case you are not a regular reader, that’s what Paradise NEWS is about: Getting the most out of life here in Paradise. Welcome to our returning seasonal readers. November marks the annual ramping up of art and leisure activities, holiday celebrations and the beginning of a new season of performances which you will find detailed in this issue. This month we feature two annual celebrations of art that make the fall really special on the Gulf Coast. The Chalk Festival at Venice Airport on Nov. 11 - 12 and Sanding Ovations in Treasure Island Nov. 15 - 19 are world class events that should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Our longtime local printer has copies ready in a few days, and the post office takes almost a week to deliver. In the meantime we distribute bulk stacks of copies to 550 locations on the barrier islands from Madeira Beach south, and along Central Avenue to downtown St. Petersburg. Our mailings have gone for years to the south barrier islands, and Boca Ciega Bayfront communities and we have expanded recently to include downtown St. Pete locations and sample mailings to areas in northeast St. Petersburg. A testimonial for the accuracy of astrology and the ability to use my knowledge for Electional Astrological purposes (picking the right time to do something). I told my client in order to sell his house quickly, to sign the necessary documents on August 2nd between the hours of 12:30 and 2:30 pm. The realtor had no problem working with my request, but was concerned that she only had one photo of the outside of the house to go with the listing. I assured her that would be fine and to just get it out there the same day. She not only did that but got the sign in the yard as well! I told them it would go fast with the influences of a fire Sun and Moon well aspected in the heavens. Later that afternoon I was told there was 2 showings and one scheduled for the next day. I assured my client that the house would be sold the next day with a spontaneous decision! He called me less than 24 hours later to say the house had been sold ABOVE the asking price! This is why I love what I do! My work is so gratifying and brings so much happiness to others! Thank so much for giving Paradise Readers a view into the cosmos! - Sarah Lyons, Astrologer Peter and Renee, I appreciated your summary of the Florida Trust’s annual meeting in St. Petersburg. The Florida Trust for Historic Preservation, in its award to the Historic Preservation Challenge Grant program (HPCG, funding heritage tourism projects and historic buildings and sites in Hillsborough County) recognized that the program design may be transferrable to other communities. By setting up an annual matching grant fund, say of $50,000 to $100,000
a significant number of small projects can be initiated. At the conference I received that award as its program administrator and organized a session on Creative Funding Strategies for Commercial and Cultural Facilities. On that panel were two local resources who may be of interest to SPB/Gulfport/ SP communities: Nelson Black of the Florida Community Loan Fund (www.fclf.org) and Ms. Stephanie Ferrell, AIA (www.stephanie@ferrellre development.com) on historic tax credits and her work in preservation. - Marilyn Hett, St. Petersburg
After Irma, thousands of us are concerned about storm water overflow, which reminds me that environmental pollution is so toxic to us all. When I think of toxic pollution, I think of fracking. So naturally I am excited to say we Floridians have an opportunity to support two very important bills, announced Oct. 10th: fracking ban bills in both our Florida House and Senate. Proudly, our Pinellas Representative Kathleen Peters is sponsoring the House Bill, and Hillsborough Senator Dana Young is sponsoring the Senate Bill. As Kathleen Peters said, “We need many voices”, so please will you kindly leave a quick voicemail message for Senator Rob Bradley in Tallahassee, urging him to promote a state-wide ban on fracking in Florida. Why? Fracking causes earthquakes, fires, sinkholes, land and water pollution. Fracking has a negative impact on Florida’s vital industries: agriculture, real estate, fishing, restaurant, and tourism. Please call today: 850-487-5005 Thank you & God bless. - Ginger Goepper Treasure Island

The Florida Aquarium releases Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle On Wednesday, Oct. 19, The Florida Aquarium released a 12-pound juvenile Kemp’s ridley sea turtle that stranded on Dec. 8, 2016 in New England as part of a large cold-stunning event this past winter.
Dr. Ari Fustukjian, The Florida Aquarium's Associate Veterinarian, and Ashley Riese, The Florida Aquarium's Veterinary Technician, release an adult, male Kemps ridley sea turtle back to its natural environment off Fort Desoto Park on Wed., Oct. 11, after five months of rehabilitative care. Photo Credit: The Florida Aquarium 8
Cold-stunning occurs when sea turtles are exposed to prolonged cold water temperatures. As cold-blooded reptiles that rely on external sources of heat to determine their body temperature, sea turtles do not have the ability to warm themselves in cold water. The turtle was flown from Marshfield Massachusetts Airport to Tampa Executive Airport on Dec. 21, 2016 by pilot Chuck Yanke and co-pilot Mike Lalley, who volunteered their time and aircraft to transport 19 sea turtles that needed rehab, including this one, from New England to
NOVEMBER 2017 | ParadiseNewsFL.com
Florida. The care of these turtles was then transferred to several facilities to continue their rehabilitation with the ultimate goal of release. The Florida Aquarium received 12 turtles, Clearwater Marine Aquarium received three turtles and Sea World Orlando received four turtles. Upon arrival at The Florida Aquarium, this turtle was alert but thin and not taking regular, deep breaths. Its blood results showed signs of infection, and it displayed evidence of pneumonia on x-rays, which is common in cold-stunned sea turtles. This turtle was treated with fluids initially until its appetite improved, as well as antibiotics to treat its pneumonia. This turtle also had a small, sensitive wound just beneath its nostrils that required frequent attention by the veterinary staff and topical medications to encourage healing.
The Florida Aquarium’s sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation efforts are part of the organization’s Center for Conservation and is one of only a few rehabilitation facilities authorized by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to treat sick or injured endangered sea turtles. With an emphasis on critical care and release back into its natural habitat, The Florida Aquarium’s full-time veterinary program and medical staff assist with sea turtle rehabilitation not only in Tampa, but nationwide. They do everything they can to ensure the conservation and ongoing livelihood of these amazing creatures. The Florida Aquarium, 701 Channelside Dr, Tampa, 33602

The selection pool to replace 10-year veteran Reid Silverboard who resigned rather than continue after the March election as Treasure Island City Manager, has been whittled down from 59 to 8 and then to a semi-final 4, chosen by the commission for personal interviews. A final selection is expected as soon as Nov. 3. The ‘final four’ include: Garry Brumback, 60, Town Manager for Southington, Conn. since 2011 and assistant city manager in Clearwater earlier; Michael Hein, 50, assistant town manager for Longboat Key, who previously had served Pima County and Tucson, Ariz.; Gary La Venia, 63, city manager for Fruitland Park, prior township manager for Maple Shade and Riverside, N.J; Lee Niblock, 64, Alachua County manager. previously administrator for Marion County.
New activities are planned for Treasure Bay Golf and Tennis, including Glo Golf & Foot Golf. According to the new assistant Rec. With two beach locations and 30 years of experience under its belt, The Frog Pond hops toward downtown St. Pete. The popular spot has expanded to Webbs Plaza (890 3rd Ave S.) Serving breakfast 7-2 Mon-Sat, and 8-2 on Sunday, with hearty portions and amazing service, the Frog Pond adds lunch after 11 am. Customers return for their exceptional Eggs Benedict, gigantic omelets and sweet Belgium waffles, eggs, salads, and sandwiches. Skyway Marina District
Mayor Kriseman and the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce cut the ribbon on Brea’s Coffee, in the ‘Skyway Mall’, the newest rebirth of a big box store in the 4300 block of 34th St. south (US 19). While the exterior does not appear to have changed much, the inside is developing into a successfullooking indoor flea market. Brea’s Coffee fills a huge space in the center of the mall. An art exhibit of self-portraits by students of Academy Prep decorated the wall for the opening. Besides a coffee house, serving the popular beverage hot and cold, Brea’s plans to be a gathering point for
the Skyway community and plans screening of football games on Sundays and Monday nights. Mall Manager R Geary Walton (727-4483-3170) says business is booming. “It is the most cost effective space to set up a new business, and there are new additions almost every week. It is on the radar of the economic development folks in St. Pete, and great new things are coming down the pike.”
The City Theatre, 4025 31st St. S. is just 3 blocks north and two blocks west of the Skyway Mall. City Theatre is the oldest, continually operating community theatre in the state of Florida, providing quality entertainment and arts education since 1925. The building, which is owned by the city, but has been maintained by a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization is in need of some TLC including a new roof and air conditioning system. It could also use solar panels to help offset its power bills, which exceed $2,500 per month in the summer. A new board of directors is energetically raising funds to “keep Theater alive” in the Skyway Marina District. Paradise NEWS has been more than doing its part donating printing, insertion and advertising to promote memberships and sponsorships. Last month we publicized a fund raising dinner thrown by Tyson Grant of Parkshore Grill and his wife Sommer, who’s son Tanner Grant was named ‘Taylor’ in our article. We apologize for the error. The Theatre is presently rehearsing Willie Wonka & A Christmas Carol.

Construction Attractive Hurricane Homes ... Too Good to Be True? by Tom Smith Remember when the wolf huffed and puffed at the little pigs houses? Irma and Maria were like wolves. They huffed and puffed. The houses built out of bricks and concrete are still standing.
The Florida construction industry builds a residential home structurally strong enough to sustain a 150 mph wind. Although wood structures meet the Florida requirements, imagine if a single family home were designed to commercial specifications, utilizing masonry construction materials including the exterior walls and floor system? What if your new home was constructed of such a superior structural system that it would prevent the devastation seen on TV after Harvey and Irma? And be attractive, at a very competitive price! Together with structural engineers and pre‐cast masonry manufacturers, my company, GHD Construction Services, Inc., has been working to design structurally superior homes that can be built at competitive prices, without compromising the architectural beauty of the homes. We have developed a structural masonry system that far surpasses existing residential wood systems, yet adding very little extra cost to the home. The wood systems that industry
uses today are engineered to be very strong structural systems, however, if and when the “Big One” hits Florida, wouldn’t you rather own the strongest home possible, at close to the same price? Not a bad idea.
If you have seen high‐rise condo buildings being constructed, you have seen pre‐cast concrete floor systems, together with con‐ crete block exterior walls, concrete reinforced with steel. These are the buildings that you see still standing after a major hurricane devastates an area. While these surpass building codes today for single‐family residential construction, some customers might be more than willing to pay a few dollars more when considering an expansive waterfront home. Since you would be investing in hurricane rated doors, windows, and sliding glass doors anyway, increasing the structural component should definitely be evaluated.
Anyone considering building within a few years might find significant savings from acting now, rather than waiting. Aside from the normal inflationary factors that raise home prices every year, this year could be extra inflationary due to Harvey, Irma and Maria. Supply & demand will certainly increase the cost of plywood, sheetrock,
windows, doors, etc. due to the rebuilding of Houston, some areas of Florida, and the Caribbean islands. If you are really considering a new Florida home, maybe you should visit the builder of your choice now and make the commitment. Downtown St. Petersburg
TIDBITS
Drivers looking for parking in downtown St. Petersburg will soon have a mobile app to find a spot. St. Petersburg City Council inked a 3-year agreement with the tech company Streetline to install on-street sensors throughout downtown that provide notifications of when parking spaces are empty. The Streetline app “Parker” is free to users. When a parking space is empty, an aerial map of the location will show an icon indicating there’s an open space with additional details about parking limits and price. The app saves drivers up to 43 percent of the time it typically takes to find a parking space, according to Streetline.

Real Estate Beach Market Reflections by Jim “Property Wizard” Beggins, Broker, Century 21 Beggins Enterprises As a RE broker since 1972, I’ve weathered 4 Florida recessions and was quite convinced that #5 was going to hit hard in October. This opinion was mainly because of the “Everything Bubbles” all over the world, showing signs of bursting.
Now after 3 hurricane hits, the government is doing everything possible to kick the next recession down the road. This includes extension of FEMA (flood ins.) subsidies, keeping interest rates low so we can fix up damaged houses and cars and buy new ones. The automobile, banking and construction industries are booming.
On our beaches we received a wakeup call with threats of devastation. The reality became evacuations, finding a place to stay, our stuff being blown around, annoying flooding, power outages, hot homes and rotting food. It was a strong message for those of us who live in the 75% of homes and condos which are not FEMA compliant, to become aware of the following;
#1 The remaining 25% of flood compliant homes will sell for far more than the 75%. #2 If you buy one of the 75%, get a current flood elevation survey and insurance quotes. #3 Do #2 even if you’re paying cash, even though you’re not YET required to insure. #4 If you’re selling, do #2 so you’re prepared for buyer’s requests. #5 Investigate options to elevate or build new in the future, whether buying or selling. #6 Before buying, find out pros and cons of living in each of our 16 little beach towns. #7 If you’re comparing beach to mainland, know that beach prices decrease much less in a downturn and increase much more in an upturn. #8 Beach homes bring much higher rental income than the mainland. #9 Pinellas barrier island properties are the best values in Florida. #10 Living in our beach towns is more fun, safer and there’s more to do.
Our weekly “REAL BEACH TALKS” address any barrier Island concerns of sellers, buyers,
renters, visitors and agents. Now you can join us online each Tues. from 4‐5PM or come in person to 5050 Gulf Blvd. in St. Pete Beach. Go to C21wizard.com (no log in required). Go on anytime to find past videos. Send me any questions you may have about our barrier islands which you’d like addressed. All the best, Jim “Property Wizard” Beggins, Broker, CENTURY 21Beggins Enterprises, with 10 offices and 400 agents serving Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee and Sarasota Counties. Since most opinions about real estate can be supported with facts. I will inform you to the best of my ability so you can unconfuse the facts to your personal advantage. I think I can use my “hands on” experience in Florida real estate since 1972 to achieve your desired outcome. Please let me know how I’m doing. Trusts & Taxes Veterans Aid and Attendance Benefits by Samantha Chechele Veterans are a very special group of individuals, and we honor their service and very much value having them as clients. We appreciate when we have an opportunity to assist Veterans and inform them about benefits to which they are entitled, due to their military service. One of those benefits, about which many Veterans are unaware, is called the Veterans Aid & Attendance Benefit. This benefit reimburses the veteran, spouse or a surviving spouse of a veteran (we will refer to them as the claimant) for costs related to inhome care by a relative, home health care, assisted living, longterm skilled nursing, or other form of health care or other assistance due to the fact that the claimant has some limitations in their activities of daily living because of health issues. It is not necessary that the claimant be completely disabled or in a nursing home, to qualify for this benefit. The benefit is only available to individuals over the age of 65. The benefit, once the claimant is qualified, comes in the form of a cash pay ment each month, just like social security or pension benefits.
The first step in the process is to determine whether the claimant is eligible, based upon the veteran’s military service. The next step is
16
NOVEMBER 2017 | ParadiseNewsFL.com
to review the service record including the Veteran’s dates of active military service, and certain reserve duty. An honorable, medical, or general discharge is required. Veterans who served during World War II or Korea are almost always eligible. Some veterans who served during Vietnam are eligible, as are Veterans from the middleeast conflicts. In order to determine eligibility, the Veteran’s discharge form (DD214) is required. If a claimant does not have this form, we can assist them in ordering it from the Veteran’s Administration.
Following the determination of service eligibility, the next step is to determine whether the claimant needs assistance with the activities of daily living. This is based upon a report completed by the claimant’s physician in which the physician states the claimant’s medical conditions and physical limitations, which impact being able to perform the activities of daily living that a healthy person could do easily.
Finally, a determination is made regarding the claimant’s financial assets. There are guide lines about the amount of assets and income that a claimant can have in order to qualify.
Just as with Medicaid planning, there is opportunity to plan regarding the claimant’s assets, to support qualification. There is no lookback period with qualification for Veteran’s Administration benefits, and there is opportunity to divest or diversify assets prior to the submission of an application so that the claimant may become financially qualified. When a claimant qualifies, the amounts that can be received are substantial. Veterans who qualify can receive up to $ 21,628 / yr. Surviving spouses can get up to $ 13,836 / yr. Veterans and spouses who both qualify can receive even more. Even better, these benefits are tax free. Chechele Law assists potential claimants in reviewing their needs and submitting applications for those who are qualified. As an accredited VA attorney (#41025), I have successfully obtained these benefits for many claimants who have worked with us. We would welcome the opportunity to meet with you to determine if you are eligible and if you are not currently eligible, to plan for applying in the future.
Get Real About Property! Don’t Buy That House by Tom Brodersen, Esq. Lawyers are o en accused of being “deal killers.” While that may be true for a few, for real estate lawyers, it is manifestly untrue. I, for one, spend a lot of (me trying to save deals that are falling apart, and I am good at it. The joke among my staff has become that I use a li)le “Tom’s Ointment,” and rou(nely fix the problem and go on to close.
Many Realtors® come to me to save deals they find themselves unable to save. Although I occasionally see clients that have already decided to cancel a deal, I can’t remember a situa(on where I made an affirma(ve effort to talk either a Buyer or a Seller out of a sale, un(l very recently.
Last week I met with a couple under contract to buy a house. Although there was a standard 15day inspec(on window, there was a “special” term that the Buyers’ $15,000 deposit would be forfeited if they backed out of the contract for any reason! It was subject to a 24‐hour a)orney review provision, but it was s(ll an amazingly one‐sided term.
The Sellers had been under contract before,
but those Buyers had an inspec(on done, and it showed a lot of problems. The Buyers cancelled, and got their deposit back. The Sellers were very frustrated.
The “special term” was added to the new Buyers’ deal. That was the only way the Sellers were willing to sell now. “Once stung, twice shy!” The Sellers shared the inspec(on report with the new Buyers, and reduced the price (again). But the inspec(on was s(ll very bad.
The flat roof on the house had at least one ac(ve leak, and there were a lot of “bubbles” in the roofing. There would have to be a new roof soon. There was a lot of water intrusion, and all kinds of rot and wear of the eaves.
None of the wiring appeared to have grounding, there were plumbing problems, and many other issues, including FEMA issues. The Buyers, however, had looked and looked for a home, and had very few choices le . They really wanted this home! I asked the Buyers a lot of ques(ons. They expected to spend “some” money on
remodeling, and to move in, in the short term. Neither of the Buyers had any construc(on skills, or “uncles in the business.” Looking at the sales history, it appeared to me that the Sellers were losing money over what they themselves had paid for the property. Unless the Buyers put $100,000 or more into the home, they would likely also end up selling for less than they paid. It wasn’t easy, but I convinced the Buyers that they were buying someone else’s problem. The cost of remodeling would almost certainly greatly exceed what they expected. And I pointed out that “remodeling a home was o en the last official act of a marriage, before divorce.” They thought I was kidding, and they laughed, but I was actually serious. Eventually I convinced them that they needed to run away from that purchase, and we went ahead and terminated the contract. And their marriage is fine, thank you!

ith November’s arrival comes a year’s worth of holiday anticipation and anxious preparation. As we begin fighting the crowds at shopping malls and filling our calendars with decadent family meals and holiday events, it can be easy to forget that some families struggle to provide even the most basic necessities.
Although several organizations coordinate holiday fundraisers and charity events, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has the unique opportunity to give back to children and families with whom they have met and interacted, sometimes on multiple occasions. Putting names and faces to the recipients of our holiday giving is added incentive to PCSO members who dedicate additional time and effort to benefitting the less fortunate during the season. For what is the 14th consecutive year, this month, the Sheriff’s Office will kick off the holiday giving season through a partnership with the Indian Rocks Beach Rotary Club, Beach Community Food Pantry at Calvary Episcopal Church, Pinellas Suncoast Fire Rescue District, and Publix. The partnership aims to limit the number of families who go hungry by delivering food to families

Seasons Greetings
From Sheriff Bob Gualtieri who otherwise could not afford traditional holiday meals around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter.
Volunteers load patrol cars with hearty Publix meals, including fully cooked turkeys, cornbread, mashed potatoes, green beans, loaves of bread, and more, and deputies deliver them to families whom they have identified in their daily work within the community.
Once we finish off the pumpkin pie and pack up the cornucopia, the PCSO sets its sights on hosting the largest law enforcement-organized holiday charity fundraiser in the Tampa Bay Area, which has raised more than $500,000 in donations and proceeds since its inception 24 years ago.
Ride & Run With The Stars, which this year will be Saturday, December 2nd, is a day’s worth of family activity including a 5K chipped race, 10K and 25mile bike rides, a “Challenge” 5K run and 25-mile bike ride combination, and a “Family Fun” 1-mile walk or skate. Post-race activities include the opportunity to refuel with food truck fare, a Kids Zone with arts and crafts and a climbing wall, a fly-in visit from Mr.
and Mrs. Claus on the Sheriff’s Office helicopter, and a silent auction with tables full of gift baskets, vacation tickets, gift certificates, and more.
The only thing more rewarding than a day of family exercise and activity is knowing that the proceeds support the Sheriff’s Christmas Sharing Project, through which PCSO members use the money raised to shop for holiday gifts, clothing, food, and other necessities for families in need.
Like the food drive partnership, the gift packages assembled during Ride & Run With The Stars’ shopping day are hand-delivered by familiar-faced deputies. If you are interested in getting involved with Ride & Run With The Stars, whether by registering for a race, ordering a t-shirt, sponsoring the event, or making a donation, contact Lieutenant Joe Gerretz at 727-582-5960, and for more information. visit www.rideandrunwiththestars.com In the meantime, let me be the first to wish you happy thanksgiving, happy holidays and happy giving!
Holiday Ideas! Where Christmas Spirit Lives All Year Long By Kay Blikken For close to 100 years, Christmas Toy Shop volunteers have worked year round packing new and refurbished used toys for disadvantaged children around Pinellas County. Each year over 2,200 children receive a bag of new toys and another of used toys. Hundreds of bicycles are assembled, rebuilt, refurbished and provided to families each year. Many Toy Shop volunteers have been participating weekly throughout the year for decades. All funding is provided through private donations. Christmas Toy Shop is an all volunteer 501{c}3 charity needing the support of the community to continue its important work of bringing smiles to as many of Pinellas’ children as possible this Christmas and for many more years to come. If this sounds like an organization that you would like to support, please consider donating new and used toys, stuffed animals and bicycles. Coordination with local social services’ organizations ensures that toys go to the truly needy. If you are looking for a rewarding and caring place to volunteer, please stop by Monday-Wednesday of any week to see first hand what they do. Donations of new or used toys are accepted Monday through Wednesday 9-3 pm year round at the Christmas Toy Shop, 550 16th Street N., St Petersburg, FL 33703. Find them on Facebook and visit them online to make a donation. www.christmastoyshop.org

Diny Jewelers – A Girl’s Best Friend - by Peter Roos
Antwerp
The home of brilliance ...
We introduced Beverly J. Diny to Paradise NEWS readers in the spring of 2016. She and her husband Pete have had a “Diny’s Jewelry” location in Middleton, Wisconsin and Beverly had recently acted on her dream to open a shop on our beaches. A highly-trained and trusted fine jeweler who focuses on her client’s particular wants, needs and desires, she has already made quite a number of long-lasting friends in town. Coming from a rural background, both she and Pete have a military history, and she seems to relate well to virtually everyone who enters her shop.
A diamond expert who visits Antwerp, Belgium over the years to buy diamonds directly for customers and for stock, Beverly is warm and unpretentious. Dedicated to continuous satisfaction with every individual experience she takes care of each new client personally. While she is happy to buy gold and diamonds from customers especially those interested in new designs, one of her favorite challenges is redesigning older jewelry to make it new again. “Women are bringing jewelry that was their mothers’ and asking me to turn them into more modern designs that make them feel special, by reusing older gems and precious metals,” said Beverly. “With 35 years experience in the industry, I can help to restore, rehabilitate, redesign and repurpose items that have sentimental value. The photos (at left) are just an example of what can be done. My client never wore her Mom’s old diamond watch. It was a shame that the precious stones just sat in a jewelry box, so we designed new matching links to complete a beautiful sapphire and diamond bracelet and did a diamond ring restoration. Beverly LOVES jewelry connoisseurs. “I invite you in to have a enjoyable fine jewelry experience.”

Mother Nature The Master of Disappearing Art
A
by Peter A. Roos
Almost every night, as the golden orb sinks into the sea, local residents join visitors who have traveled across the continent or around the world to gather on the warm white sand to bask in nature’s beauty for a few minutes.
They say “Oooo” and “Ahhhh”. They applaud and they ring the sunset bell. They revel in the pastel after glows that slowly drift off into darkness. Some lucky ones had escaped the 90-degee-highs to visit places way above sea level, where trees burst into amazing vibrant colors before all the leaves fall off.
It seems like a terrible shame, each time darkness overtakes one of the sunsets that made St. Pete Beach the Sunset Capital of Florida. Still it actually feels like the brevity of our exposure to the art form makes it all the more rare and consequently more valuable. It felt that way during totality of the solar eclipse on August 21st in Kearney, Nebraska too. It was a long way to travel to watch the sun eclipse for just a couple of minutes, but the uniqueness of the moment made a very lasting impression. Just before it got dark, the “sunset” was amazing, not just in the west, like we are used to, but all around us. 28
NOVEMBER 2017 | ParadiseNewsFL.com
Some of our freinds make a kind of custom or ritual out of their observations of these natural phenomena. They photograph the sunset, hoping to catch the elusive green flash on film. They seek out displays of the northern lights, standing outside late at night in very cold weather hoping to be able to say they’ve witnessed it personally. While Mother Nature is undoubtedly the master of disappearing art, some of the world’s finest artists working in mediums that have very short tenure are gathering in our area, as they do each year at this time to show their skill. An hour and a half to the south of us artists spend many hours applying chalk to airport runways to produce colorful art with amazing 3-D perspectives. In Treasure Island, some of the world’s most talented sculptors form beach sand into epic pieces of art that last no longer than Nature allows. If you go, be warned, visits to these festivals of disappearing art can be addictive. It’s not like a visit to a museum where you will likely see much of the same on each visit. This kind of art is for art lovers who are easilly bored.
DISAPPEARING ART Highlights Treasure Island Sand Sculpture & Venice Chalk Art Festivals
Story by STEVE TRAIMAN The Gulf Beaches are host to many festivals during the year, but disappearing art is the focus of two of the most noted international events. Treasure Island will host the 9th annual Sanding Ovations Masters Cup Sand Sculpture Competition and Music Festival, November 15-19, on the beach behind the Bilmar Beach Resort. The 10th annual International Chalk Festival will be located at the Venice Airport Fairgrounds on the island of Venice, November 10-13. Both events have interesting history attached to their origins and current success.
Venice Chalk Art Fest While the event was started by founder and CEO Denise Koval in November 2007 in Sarasota’s Burns Square, moving to the Venice Airport grounds in 2014, its origins go back to Italy during the 16th century. These Italian artists called “madonnari,” went into remission after World War II until the 1970’s when the few remaining madonnari got the recognition they deserved with the start of the International Madonnari Festival in Grazie di Curtatone in Northern Italy. In the USA, Robert Guillemin, known as “Side-walk Sam”, became inspired by the Italians and took to the pavement in Massachusetts during the 1970’s. He remained passionate about the art form until his death in 2015. In the 1980’s, another American artist, Kurt ParadiseNewsFL.com | NOVEMBER 2017

go into producing the Chalk Festival. The event is ticketed and takes place at the Venice Airport Fairgrounds, a location that is beautiful and lots of space for the artists to be creative.” Features at this year’s Evanescent-themed event include a Museum exhibition displaying artifacts and memories of the past 10 years of Festival success, with augmented reality displays available via cellphones. Local and regional bands playing Nov. 10 & 11 include BC & the Gang, David Smash, Lenny Long Band, Sound Sisters, Rockadials, Hatley Band, Shore Dogs, Crystal Eyes and Toast. Seven local food vendors, sweets, beverages, and spirits will be open for business all hours of the festival.
Wenner, while trying to make a living studying classical drawing in Italy, became the rst American madonnari. He went on to invent the 3D pavement art, documented by the National Geographic Society in 1985. He started the rst festival in the U.S. and along with the festival in Italy, was instrumental in transforming the art into a worldwide phenomenon. Denise, President of the Burns Square Property Owners Association in 2007, told Paradise News, “At that time the Children’s Chalk Playground, run by artist Jill Hoffman-Kowal, was the most popular area. The rst festival welcomed 22 artists and attracted 5,000 visitors to the area over two days. Of the 22 artists, only three had street-painting experience: Lori Escalara, our featured artists from California, Kitty Dyble-Thompson, and Mike Kasun. They were all instrumental in the progress and development of the festival, with both Lori and Kitty participating since inception.” She continues, “We don’t have a competition due to renowned participating artists that participate. Included have been Kurt Wenner, 3D pavement art form inventor who gets up to $50,000 an event; Leon Keer from the Netherlands, known for his 2011 Lego Army installation and recent $150,000 competition winner; Tomo Saito from Japan, winner of a recent $50,000 competition; and our local artist Truman Adams who won $5,000 recently in Dubai. “As a 501(c)(3) charity, we raise money for ights, housing, food, art & installation supplies and materials, insurances, and all the costs that

T.I. ‘Sanding Ovations’ “Our sand sculpture events started in 2008,” co-founder Meredith Corson Doubleday told Paradise News. She and husband Dan are local World Champion sand sculptors who travel the world and meet some of the best sand sculptors in their journeys. Meredith continued, “Treasure Island Recreation Director Cathy Hayduke and I had been looking for a sponsor for years to put this event on. We had just about given up hope when Anheuser Busch (Great Bay Distributing) contacted Cathy in 2007 with an offer to sponsor any type of beach event to promote their Landshark beer. “Of course, Cathy called Dan and I, and the rest is history. We teamed up with our worldwide sand sculptor contacts, and Cathy, who has put on hundreds of events during her years with the city, and the Festival was a hit from the start.” Since then, Anheuser Busch has been the main Gold sponsor, with The Bilmar Beach Resort and Sloppy Joes as Silver sponsors. In addition to Cathy, Meredith and Dan, the 2017 Committee includes Clyde Smith, Bilmar Beach Resort, Roger Jones, Sloppy Joes; Justin Tramble, Treasure Island Assistant Recreation Director; Vito Musante,
Vendor Coordinator; and Jeff Jenson, City of Treasure Island, Media and Music. The top three sculptures and a “people’s choice” sculpture will be awarded over $14,000 cash prizes. Sand sculptors at Sanding Ovations come from throughout the world, representing countries such as Ireland, The Netherlands, Singapore, Russia, Lithuania, Canada and the United States. Last year’s prize winners shared $12,000, topped by 1st Place to Jobi Bouchard of Canada for “Biological Link’; 2nd place to Dmitrii Klimenko of Russia for “My Changing Woman”; with 3rd place and People’s Choice
awards to Andrius Petkus of Lithuania for “Forbidden Love”. The masterful exhibition of sand sculpting talent at the world-class level is the big appeal, supplemented by the giant sponsor sculpture created by Meredith and Dan. The beach food court, an arts and crafts marketplace, and three days of live music make Sanding Ovations a must-see event while visiting Treasure Island. Produced by the City of Treasure Island Parks & Recreation Department, Sanding Ovations is free and open to the public. For event schedules, sand sculptor bio’s,

Pass-a-Grille Way Progresses Eileen Torres & Jay Anderson • Edited by Peter Roos
“Our Contractor, (Nelson) will be wrapping up Phase 1 of the Pass-aGrille Way project over the next 60 days” said Eileen Torres in the city’s October newsletter. Nelson is clearing their materials out of Hurley Park, making way for Gibbs and Register, the contractor who was awarded Phase 2 of the project (South from 19th Ave.). No date is set yet for Phase 2 to begin. Meanwhile, Frontier Communications is installing a new conduit line south from Don Vista. Some residents have been without phone or internet since Sept. 25th. The existing line continues to have maintenance problems and the new line is expected to provide a higher level of service for everyone in Pass-A-Grille. The Detour at 30th Ave & Sunset Way will remain most of November. Road building continues from 25th Ave south to 21st Ave with paving expected the week of November 16th.

This entire sanitary sewer system from 19th Ave. north to the Don CeSar is now complete. The storm water system remains on schedule to be complete in all areas by the end of first week in November which will complete all utilities for the project. The reconstruction of the 21st Ave Intersection is expected to last through most of November.
The final paving for all of phase 1 (from 19th north to the Don) is expected in the middle of December, with temporary street striping. A couple of weeks later, the final high-visibility striping will be put down. Once the paving is in place, (Nov. 22-25th) Duke Energy will return to install the remaining street lights. Installation of 292 Washingtonian Palms is planned in January. All businesses in Pass-A-Grille are open and they are looking forward to your visit.

TOP TEN SCAMS
… Against Seniors
by Peter A. Roos
Scams targeting seniors have grown significantly in 2017. We have personally been the targets of scammers posing as IRS agents on the telephone, claiming a suit is about to be filed and willing to settle if we buy a bunch of gift cards. Others have promised to eliminate our power bill, lower our credit card interest, several bankers from Nigeria and others from Nevada have offered to send millions of dollars to us. Even our own mortgage company tried to sell us overpriced hazard insurance. As a result, Paradise NEWS is working with RetirementLiving.com to help spread awareness about scammers that specifically go after senior citizens. Despite the real threat of harm, most seniors don’t feel threatened by scams. In a sample conducted by Retirement Living staff among seniors 65+ during September 2017, 52.24%
Scam #1: Ponzi/Pyramid Schemes - In Birmingham,
Alabama, a gentleman offered free tax work to a church whose members were largely 60 years and older. After he gained the trust of the congregation, he sold them shares in a pyramid, ponzi scheme by claiming that a portion of returns would be given to the church and that without buying into his secure and guaranteed investment plan, they could outlive their savings. In short - Beware of loaning friends large amounts of money in exchange for some larger future sum. The fraudster also reportedly used scare tactics such as telling the faithful that their social security benefits would be cut off and that their healthcare costs would be too expensive for them. In some cases, ministers of certain churches have been convicted for complicity and promotion of such schemes.
“This type of fraud depends on the particular facts of each case whether the pastors, ministers or elders of the church were unwillingly taken in or became part of the con later on in exchange for compensation, love offerings or future promises,” said Berg.
Scam #2: International scams
- Reportedly run by a U.K. company, Profitable Sunrise instructs investors to wire money to Eastern Europe in exchange for risk-free returns of up to 2.7% per day for periods of six months to two years. The company’s slogan 34
of respondents answered “no” to the question “Are you worried about being scammed or taken advantage of financially?” - To educate our readers on the dangers of scams, we put together a list of “Top 10 scams targeting seniors in 2017.”
is ‘Get Richer With Every Sunrise’ however neither the principals nor the proposed investments are registered with any State or Federal authorities. In all 50 states, the sale of unregistered securities is illegal unless the securities fall under a specific exemption. “The promises being made by this company appear to fall into the ‘too good to be true’ category,” said Patricia Struck, administrator of the Division of Securities.
Scam #3: Fake marriage schemes - Single, retired military
veteran men who live in nursing homes and have no family are particularly vulnerable to marriage scams. Susan Hodges, a former nursing facility administrator, says she’s observed R.N.s who work in retirement homes marry these isolated, vulnerable veterans for their war pay and benefits. While the elderly veteran is living in the nursing home, Hodges alleges that their newlywed younger wives are eating off their pensions, living in their homes and driving their cars.
Scam #4: Affinity fraud
- Scams that cater to a certain ethnic group such as Latinos, can strike any region of the country. These scams have also infiltrated fraternal organizations such as Kiwanis & Lions Clubs. This fraud occurs when a con artist manipulates the close relationship that one individual, such as a retired military veteran, has with another of the same group
NOVEMBER 2017 | ParadiseNewsFL.com
“It is imperative that we detect and prevent senior financial fraud before criminals, who prey on our most vulnerable citizens, steal from and devastate them,” said Mike Rothman, president of the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA). Some 29% of members say their agency has seen an increase in senior fraud cases & almost none have seen a decreasein complaints. But most interestingly, those who reportedly knew someone who had been scammed were much less likely to feel worried themselves. Our explanation for this inverse knowledge-fear relationship may have to do with confidence level after learning about scams, a byproduct of learning about the unknown. So in response and to raise awareness, we have identified the top 10 scams that plague senior citizens in retirement, along with examples for each.
and uses that familiarity and trust to promote and sell unsuitable or fraudulent investment products.
Scam #5: Foreign currency swindle - The Securities and
Exchange Commission (SEC) charged a Cache County, Utah man for soliciting investors in a fraudulent scheme involving investments in top secret Iraqi currency and oil contracts. John Scott Clark pled guilty to bank fraud, money laundering and illegal gambling. Lesson learned - Beware of get rich quick currency schemes. “These con artists are telling aging retirees that they can buy the Iraqi dinar for pennies and that it is ‘imminent’ that the dinar will be on par with the U.S. dollar and that they should load up now to earn a ton of money,” said Berg. In the process, victims pay commissions, exchange fees or arbitrage fees to the seller.
Scam #6: Real estate scams
- After a natural disaster, fraudulent promoters typically come along trying to sell damaged buildings or land lots allegedly available at rock bottom prices and that can be rehabbed or re-developed. Too often after the retiree has invested $5,000, $10,000, their entire savings or retirement account, it’s revealed that 46 others are on that mortgage list, which renders it worthless or in many cases the mortgage or land title doesn’t even exist.
The elder generation tend to fall for fraudulent real estate scams due to the tangibility of land.
Scam #7: Securities fraud
- An 86 year-old retired U.S. Air Force pilot and a 91-year-old retired World War II U.S. Navy veteran lost several hundred thousand dollars in a bogus investment opportunity offered by an attorney. An Alabama Securities Commission investigation revealed that both veterans were offered promissory notes in exchange for their money, which was to be invested in real estate and medical technology ventures with an 8% to 12% return on their investments to be paid at a specified time. Remember this - “As long as there’s money around, there will be thieves” “The first line of defense is for the investor to determine whether the offer is too good to be true.” The defendant pled guilty to three counts of securities fraud, was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment, split to serve five years in the state penitentiary and ordered to pay more than $4 million in restitution to multiple victims.
Scam #8: Guardianship abuse
- Some 11 years ago, Hodges admitted three new residents who were different than others who lived at the nursing home where she worked. The seasoned administrator discovered they were wards of the state of Texas whose assets were under the control of a guardianship company after
a Tarrant County Probate Judge deemed them incompetent. “One lady told me the Court had stolen more than a million dollars from her bank account,” said Hodges. Since 2006, the licensed nursing facility administrator has noticed a rising number of the elderly enduring the same fate. “It seemed that the court and the lawyers were complicit in the fraud,” said Hodges who is no longer working at a nursing facility but is instead working as a consultant and wrote a book about guardianship abuse called A Breach of Trust.
Scam #9: High yield prime bank accounts - Using
complicated and reportedly phony documents, this scam promises retirees that they can participate in high yield prime bank investments connected to secretive accounts only available to the ultra high net worth families at Swiss, French, English or other overseas banks. Although prime bank accounts don’t exist, seniors aren’t often aware of that fact. “It all sounds good at the point of purchase but promising a retiree that they will be able to invest and enjoy “no risk no loss” returns in the same ballpark as an ultra-millionaire is a scam,” said Berg.
Scam #10: Funeral scams
- Criminals use funerals to scam seniors out of money and to perpetrate identity theft. Examples include scammers going to funerals in order to claim that the deceased owed them money, and then pressuring the deceased’s relatives to pay off the debt. Caution ahead - Scammers are getting more sophisticated. Additionally, scammers use funeral notices to steal identities by emailing a fake funeral notification using real funeral home logos. These emails contain an attachment asking the recipient to open the attachment in order to see the funeral details. The victim triggers malware by opening the attachment, which enables the identity thieves to acquire personal information. Stay vigilant - If you think you’ve been targeted by a scammer, contact local law enforcement.

John’s Pass Boardwalk, Madeira Beach HubbardsMarina.com Inshore - Cold front season is here! As we thought, sheepshead fishing is heating up. Once a cold front hits and water gets muddy and water temps drops, the sheeps come out to play. Also, like sheepshead the black drum love this time of year. We’re seeing monster drum along the beaches of Treasure Island and Madeira beach. Drum, like their cousin the sheepshead, love crustaceans like crabs, sand fleas or shrimp. Personally I love pieces of shrimp, oysters or barnacles for sheepshead. For drum, I prefer a dead nearly rotten crab or large dead shrimp weighted to the bottom. Besides these two species snook love this time of year too and they seem to get more aggressive as the water chills. However, as the water cools they will become more opportunistic feeders and will move slower so you must slow down your artificial lures or use live bait presented naturally. Personally, the dock light fishing at night is my favorite this time of year and the snook love to hang in the warm lights of docks near passes, channels or flats where they know bait will stack up to keep warm. Typically the big boys are always just outside the ‘light line’ or closer to the bottom. I love to work my lure slowly along the bottom or edges of the light line and wait for the huge slam! Near shore - Hogfish, hogfish, and hogfish is the title of this week’s near shore report. They are becoming more concentrated and easier to find nearshore this time of year as they group up to prepare for their spawn. It’s a great time of year to dial in your hogfish techniques on a private charter or party boat trip. Keep in mind the less lines in the water and the more advanced fisherman you have on board the better you will be doing on these leader shy, smart, great tasting & non-aggressive fish. Also, as the water cools the near shore gag bite should only be improving we’re already seeing them push into the bays meaning they are showing up near shore! We’re excited for a great push of
hogfish and gags as the waters continue to cool with the barrage of cold fronts.
Offshore - Gag grouper bite is on FIRE offshore right now! Last weekend’s 39 hour did better on gags then we have seen in a long long time with over 50 landed and nearly twice that many break offs of huge fish we couldn’t stop. This time of year the big tackle + big bait + natural presentation = big fish becomes more and more important. I love using my 9ot reel, 100lb test, and 125lb floro with a 10-12ot hook and the biggest bad to the bone live bait I can find and hold on tight to get ready for the fight of my life. My personal favorite gag grouper bait is a huge squirrel fish or sand perch. Tuna also love this time of year and we’re starting to see them quite a bit. Remember, tuna love biting at night on the new and full moons and a flat lined sardine works well or tail hooked pigfish with 50lb floro leader and a 5ot circle. Kingfish are still around for now too so make sure to get them while they are still around. Once the waters cool down into the lower 70’s they will disappear for the most part until their spring run.
