You can find an excellent history of the holiday on www.History.com. Rather than just a day of giving thanks, we have, in this column, often proposed that the entire month of November be one in which we try to focus on being appreciative of all we have. This month we are proposing something really radical. Why not try adopting an “attitude of gratitude” for an entire year? You can be thankful your ancestors left Ukraine, Crimea, Iran, South or Central America, even England or wherever, and that you have been able to live in relative freedom and peace. Even if you lived in Ft. Myers Beach, you can be thankful you survived and that others have your back. When was the last time you mailed someone a thank you note? It is really amazing what can happen to you and those around you when you consciously show your gratitude for things you generally take for granted. “A direct connection exists between an “attitude of gratitude” and a person’s mental and physical well-being,” according to an article in Psychology Today. Imagine, you could overcome a lot of the anxiety you are feeling and improve your physical well-being just by counting your blessings and telling people that help you that you appreciate them. Tampa International Airport and Virgin Atlantic will celebrate the inaugural flight of the airline’s new year-round service to London’s hub airport, London Heathrow (LHR), next week. This event marks the start of a major international route with a premium carrier for the Tampa Bay region. The new nonstop flights will feature Virgin Atlantic’s new Airbus A330-900neo, the first of 16 Airbus A330neo wide-body aircraft to be put into service by the London-based carrier. This is the first time TPA is offering nonstop service to Heathrow, marking a significant moment for Tampa Bay’s growing prominence as an international destination. Heathrow is TPA’s largest unserved market in Europe. Initial four flights/week increase to daily flights year-round on Nov. 28. The Airbus A330-900neo is the latest addition to Virgin Atlantic’s fleet and is designed to provide a premium, personalized experience for every single customer. The A330neo features Virgin Atlantic’s latest generation Upper Class cabin, including its iconic social space and innovative Retreat Suite. There are a lot of choices, and it can be confusing, but your primary-care provider knows your medical history better than anyone and should be one of your first stops when it comes to discussing your needs. Some of the top things to remember when preparing to take part in Medicare Open Enrollment are: 1. Know the dates. Medicare’s Open Enrollment Period runs Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. This is when you can join, switch, or drop your Medicare health plan or a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C). 2. Know the network. Make sure your preferred doctors and hospitals are in your plan’s network. Don’t assume they are and don’t wait until after you’ve enrolled to check. PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY BREAKTHROUGH “My feet feel like they’re on fire.” “Each step feels like I’m walking through wet paint.” “I live in constant fear that I could fall.” “I can’t sleep, my hands and feet tingle all night.” What do all of these people have in common? They suffer from peripheral neuropathy. It’s estimated that more than 20 million people in the US have peripheral neuropathy. Unfortunately, this figure may be significantly higher as the disease is often misdiagnosed because of its wide array of symptoms. Details, Details, Details! Real estate transactions tend to be document intensive. They involve long, highly detailed sales contracts & leases, deeds and many other legal instruments where the details are absolutely critical. When I advise my clients as to their rights in a real estate deal, I always ask them to bring ALL the documents involved with them. Experience shows that people often misunderstand their situations in fundamental ways, but the documents are the path to seeing it all clearly. Problems arise when the documents are not as clear or accurate as they should be (and that happens more often than you may think). It’s usually a function of haste in the drafting process. To their credit, most real estate agents work very hard to write clear, accurate contracts, on forms, which are nearly universally regarded as reliable and fair, i.e., the FAR/BAR contract forms (a subject for another column). Sometimes, however, I meet clients whose lives are topsy-turvy because of transactions, which have gone off the rails, and the paperwork isn’t what it should be. Sometimes it’s self-help by clients who read a lot on the web, and think that they can save money

PETE Take Lead in Response to Hurricane Ian Story by STEVE TRAIMAN n the wake of the estimated $70 to $80 billion swath of destruction that Hurricane Ian left in Southwest Florida in late September, the Tampa Bay area in general – and St. Pete in particular, has taken the lead in getting vital information to residents and businesses who want to provide assistance. According to ABC Action News, the Federal Emergency Management Administration already has provided more than $500 million directly to Hurricane Ian survivors, and the federal Department of Transportation has delivered more than $50 million for rapid reconstruction to Sanibel Island and other hard-hit areas. Florida’s agriculture was badly impacted, with more than $1.56 billion in losses, and will need help. St. Pete Mayor Ken Welch told Paradise News, “It has been uplifting to see our local community come together to support our neighbors to the south. Thanks to the Rays Hurricane Recovery for partnering with the city to collect supplies that went to help those most effected. So many residents showed up and donated what they could – surpassing expectations and proving that every little bit helps. “The Emergency Management Team along with many other city departments and staff worked hard and did an amazing job with hurricane prep and recovery. The city’s Emergency Management Team will publish an After Action report and bring it to City Council soon. Continuous improvement for resilience is vitally important to our city. Manatees are herbivores, feeding solely on seagrass, algae and other vegetation in freshwater and estuarine systems in the southeastern United States. Full-grown manatees weigh between 800 to 3,500 pounds and reach 10-13 feet in length. Females are larger than males. Manatees can hold their breath for approximately 20 minutes; however, they regularly breathe every few minutes. Florida manatees can be found as far west as Texas and as far north as Massachusetts during summer but in the winter they congregate in Florida’s warm water habitats as they have relatively little body fat and a low metabolic rate. Loss of warm water habitats, decreasing food, red tides and unusually cold weather threaten manatees, and many die from being hit by boaters. Report sick, injured, dead, tagged, orphaned, or harassed manatees to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), 24 hours a day, seven days a week: call 1-888-404-3922. Cellular phone customers: *FWC or #FWC. The relationship between a mother and baby is a strong social bond. Gestation is 12 months before birth, and the baby will be about 4-4.5 feet long and weigh between 60-70 pounds. For one-two years, the baby (calf) stays close to Mom, learning food locations, rest areas and warm weather refuges. We all celebrate in different ways, however one thing remains consistent, which is how much we love our pets. Most of us (admittedly, even we veterinary professionals) express this with food. We have a large meal with various dishes varying from traditional and cultural fare to delicacies we would not otherwise have, and it becomes difficult not to share with our pets. Caution is advised as our pets may not be able to “stomach” our holiday fare.

Pancreatitis – The pancreas is a very important organ that is responsible for secreting the main digestive enzymes that break down food (as well as other important tasks). Ingestion of foods rich in fats are typically, but not always, the cause of inflammation that induces pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can manifest as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea but can become severe, causing a painful belly, lethargy, and dehydration. In rare cases, this can become so severe that the pancreas can release the enzymes into the abdomen causing peritonitis (inflammation of the abdominal cavity) and even necrotizing pancreatitis (in essence where the pancreas can die off).

THE TAO OF DOW The Museum of the Arts & Crafts Movement (MAACM) is showcasing the legendary artist and visual composition guru Arthur Wesley Dow through 1/15/2023. On exhibit are 18 color woodblocks, six paintings, and 41 original cyanotypes from the rare Ipswich Days album. Also included in the exhibit are the original album By Salt Marshes, where Dow illustrated his friend Everett Stanley Hubbard’s poems with simple woodcuts, and the three sets of Ipswich Prints, which include 18 prints of Dow’s original designs. Dow began experimenting with woodblock printing in 1891, when he looked for new, non-Western inspirations for landscape painting. While researching at the Boston Public Library, he discovered the flat, linear woodblock prints of Japanese-master Hokusai. Struck by the simplicity, elegance, and decorative beauty of Hokusai’s compositions, Dow’s way of seeing landscapes was transformed. Dow embraced certain compositional techniques from Japanese sources which defined the ukiyo-e aesthetic: bold lines, flattened planes of color, asymmetry, truncated forms, the division of an image into sections through devices like windows, screens and walls, and the use of strong diagonals and unusual perspectives. In ukiyo-e prints, Dow found an alternative to traditional academic techniques, wedding an admiration for Oriental aesthetics with an English Arts and Crafts sensibility and seeking a synthesis of Western and Eastern art. Dow called his woodcuts “color themes” and executed every step of the printing process: choosing the image, carving the blocks, selecting and applying colors, and printing each impression by hand. He frequently experimented with color in his prints, using the same blocks to make multiple impressions in different inks. which enabled him to suggest different seasons or times of day.

Meet Mitko with St. Pete Microgreens Originally from Bulgaria, Mitko moved to the Delaware beach in 2014. In 2019, suffering from various illnesses, he looked for something to boost his immune system. He stumbled upon microgreens, which he researched thoroughly. Microgreens are young vegetable greens that are approximately 1-3 inches tall. They have an aromatic flavor and concentrated nutrient content and come in a variety of colors and textures. Unlike larger herbs and vegetables that take weeks or months to grow, microgreens can be harvested and eaten in 7-10 days. Despite their small stature, microgreens actually boast a more intense flavor than larger vegetables and herbs. Microgreens are a rich source of phytonutrients and antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Mitko bought seeds, grew and ate a small microgreen salad with each meal. He soon felt an improvement in his health, and started supplying his friends with these microgreens. When he moved to St. Petersburg in 2021, Mitko continued growing a variety of the delicious nutritious sprouts and joined the Corey Sunday Market and the Fresh Market at Wiregrass in “New Tampa” as a weekly vendor on the first and third Saturday each month. They are light weight and last well for a few days once harvested, if kept cool and refrigerated in the clear plastic containers they come in.

One of their regular activities is a morning at the Tampa Bay Watch Marine Education Center, 3000 Pinellas Bayway South in Tierra Verde to help build oyster reef balls! This task involves pouring marine-friendly concrete into a fiberglass mold to create oyster reef balls, then taking apart the molds when dry. He appeared on the cover of Science magazine in 2020 as the lead author of a study of the DNA of Mojave Desert tortoises. Scott and his fellow researcher at UCLA collaborated with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to study the tortoises that had been placed in its Large Scale Translocation Site in the Ivanpah Valley southeast of Las Vegas. According to published reports, many of the tortoises were kept as pets, which became illegal when the animals were added to the endangered species list or had to be moved because of development. L ife i n th e C one of U n c e rta i nt y Transcending the Illusion of Control The only thing we have control over is our choice to either react mindlessly or respond mindfully to ‘what is’ in the current moment. To practice the ‘Art of Uncertainty’ is to get comfortable being out of control. ~ excerpt from, The Art of Uncertainty

It’s interesting to observe how fear can creep in and overwhelm the logical mind when threatening conditions seem beyond our control. Human beings’ disdain being out of control. When was the last time you felt stuck in a vortex of fear, being rendered powerless over your own destiny? For me (and millions of others), the answer could be September 28th, as hurricane Ian crawled northeast along the Gulf Coast; predicted to hit Florida with a category F4-F5 impact. As articulate as the meteorologists were, they could offer only an educated guess when and where Ian would make landfall– and, to what degree, it would affect us. They offered us a graphic rendering filled with speculation models called “spaghetti plots” that headed “willy-nilly” in many directions, creating what they know as “The Cone of Uncertainty.” The problem with that is, it’s, well, uncertain–which only spawns more angst, and fear in the minds and hearts of everyone in the “Cone.” Tragically, hurricane

Ian did indeed make landfall, about 80 miles south of where I live and wrought devastating loss, pain and suffering to people living in the Fort Myers area. Ian triggered immense fear in millions of Floridians along the Gulf Coast who would never experience the direct wrath of this monster storm. Often, fear originates in our mind because, try as we may, we have little control over the future. The future is where we look for our peace and security, seeking the assurance that everything will be all right. The illusion is that we have control over many variables in our daily life. However, we have control over very little, other than our next breath and our next thought. Consider these questions: Can you control the driver in the next lane? Can you control the surges of the waves in the ocean? Can you control the earth when it quakes? Can you control the stock market and the direction interest rates go?

The obvious answer to these questions is the same, yet look at how much time and energy we spend worrying about it. We all experience our own personal “Cone of Uncertainty” at various times of our lives. Our uncertainty may not be at all storm related. Perhaps it’s the “spaghetti plots” of uncertainty laid out by a doctor’s diagnosis that put us in the middle of a different type of storm. Maybe what is going on in the economy–or the increasing crime and violence that seeps into our minds while watching the 6-o’clock news puts us in the “Cone of Uncertainty.” The cause of our personal storms can be legion. THE TAKEAWAY: A few of my friends say, “You should move out of Florida to escape the threat and uncertainty of hurricanes.” To that I reply, “I came from California where drought, fire, gridlock, and earthquakes manifest their own “Cone of Uncertainty” regularly.” As the saying goes, you can run, but you can’t hide. There is nowhere we can run to–physically or emotionally–that doesn’t have its own version of the cone of uncertainty. Perhaps the resolution we must embrace is that uncertainty comes with the privilege of living in a human skin; it’s not a matter of avoiding our uncertainties– it’s more about how we interpret them. Whatever your personal “Cone of Uncertainty” may be today, allow it to be your teacher; live proactively with it and don’t allow fear to have its way with you. Get comfortable in knowing what you have control over and what you don’t– and make peace with it. Perhaps foremost, always find solace in the great teacher’s admonition: “This too shall pass.” He was right on; good, bad, or indifferent, the storm always passes.
