MESSAGE

In a 1998 lecture to University of Florida MBA students, Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, fielded a host of questions on investments and valuations before a thoughtful student asked, “What would you do to live a happier life if you could live over again?” The Oracle of Omaha responded, “Do something you enjoy all your life and be associated with people you like.” In the next two months we will be completing our 28th year of creating and sharing Paradise NEWS with a hundred thousand of our neighbors in south Pinellas County.

To say it’s a rewarding career doesn’t do it justice. We feel blessed. We have a faithful, loving, and efficient team, loyal advertisers, terrific vendors, some for a quarter of a century Seldom a day passes that we do not hear “I LOVE Paradise NEWS!”

We are also blessed that our publishing schedule gives us a month’s break in the summer. We recently returned from our 51st honeymoon roaming all over the high country of Colorado. We stayed in Frisco, Buena Vista, Vail, Ridgway, Mesa Verde National Park, Woodland Park, Golden, and then Estes Park for Labor Day weekend. We visited two national parks plus Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods. People ask what we like the best, but we have not chosen. Each area holds its own special attraction. We love the variety, the change in topography and the weather.

We often return just after Labor Day to prepare for a tropical storm or worse. Thankfully, this storm season started slower than most. Hurricane Ian targeted Tampa Bay and came ashore sooner than predicted like Charley had in Aug. 2004, saving our readership area from serious damage. We were truly blessed, again. Treat your Ian experience as a rehearsal and realize that if the forecasters are right the next time, our area could look like Fort Myers Beach does.

If you feel generous, Beverly Diny of Diny’s Jewelers in Treasure Island is housing a great friend, a longtime local news anchor from Wisconsin, who lost practically everything she owned in hurricane Ian. For a tax-deductible contribution where it will be well used to feed displaced residents due to the storm. Here’s a link: www.tampabay.com/ hurricane/2022/09/29/where-donate-or-volunteer-help-hurricane-ian-victims.

Check our social media and website and how you can help our neighbors to the south.

Readers tell us frequently that they feel our latest issue is the best one we’ve ever done. That is by design. We continually strive to be better. It is our passion. Some ask us what they can do to thank us for sharing Paradise NEWS with them. We usually say “suggest your favorite service providers advertise with us,” but RIGHT NOW there is another way each of you can impact our future. Please use this link to vote by 10/14 for Paradise NEWS as a Good Burger under MAKERS & CREATORS. https://survey.zohopublic.com/zs/FARyAQ

We apologize in advance that many of you will not read this until after the deadline.

Why us? The “Good Burger” is someone in greater St. Pete making a positive impact in our community. On Nov. 9, the St. Pete Chamber holds the Good Burger Awards at Jannus Landing. Paradise NEWS is the best source of local entertainment, arts, events, best bets, news, and insider info from downtown St. Pete to the Gulf Beaches, now in its 28th year and more popular than ever. The Best COFFEE in Tampa Bay!

Scan the QR Code with your smart phone to learn more about The Centre of St. Pete Beach, a medicinal marijuanacentric health, education, meeting and event facility in the literal center of St. Pete Beach.

Last year, the area’s best Cuban restaurant moved to a corner of The Centre from Tampa Armature Works to open Kuba En La Playa with a walk-up window open to Blind Pass Road and a door inside the Centre.

Now, we have established The Centre Coffee Exchange, open initially 7am-2pm seven days a week, serving

• Specialty Coffees

• Organic Teas

• Kombucha

• Single Origin, Direct Trade Chocolate

• 100% Real Fruit Smoothies

• Beer and Wine

• Treats and more

Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. I grew up with the smell of coffee in our kitchen all day and I grew to love drinking the beverage hot or cold, sometimes with a shot of brandy or espresso.

We have mostly been drinking coffee since ancient times due to its stimulant effect and unique taste. However, its consumption has his torically been associated with a lower risk of some diseases such as:

• type 2 diabetes mellitus & obesity

• cardiovascular disease and

• some type of cancers

• chronic liver disease

• non-melanoma skin cancer in Caucasian women

• a lower risk of Parkinson’s disease

Weekdays 11am-5pm, Fri.-Sat. 11am-7pm

Ask about our holiday and event catering!

So, it has also been consumed for its health benefits. It contains many bioactive com pounds such as caffeine, chlorogenic acids and diterpenoid alcohols, which have so far been associated with many potential health benefits. Caffeine reduces risk of developing neurodegenerative disease and chlorogenic acids (CGA) and diterpene alcohols are antioxidant and chemo-preventive.

A study entitled Associations of Coffee Drinking and Cancer Mortality published in the Journal of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Vol 26 No. 10, October 1, 2017, concluded “These findings are consistent with many other studies that suggest coffee drinking is associated with a lower risk of colorectal, liver, female breast, and head and neck cancer.”

In our Paradise News articles, here on page 7 for the past two years, we have been telling you that we only carry top of the line CBD products. It would stand to reason that we are equally as pretentious about our Coffee Exchange.

We have the very best coffee, and the very best baristas in the area. Don’t take my word for it! Come in and try a cup.

If you are lucky enough to get a postcard with a coupon in your Paradise NEWS, you can even get your first cup for FREE. You might find one at the Sunday Market or the Chamber of Commerce lobbies in the area.

For an extra fee, you can get your beverage laced with organic turmeric to lubricate your joints and/ or a dose of CBD. Scan the COFFEE EXCHANGE QR code to learn more. We HOPE to see you soon at the Centre Coffee Exchange!

TAMPA BAY

In an effort to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, Tampa Electric will be investing $5 million in USF’s Clean Energy Research Center. TECO said emerging technologies and ideas are crucial to achieving the objective of net-zero carbon emissions. The $5 million gift, which will be made possible by shareholder funds, will be used by the Clean Energy Research Center (CERC) to create an endowed fund to assist in the study and creation of cutting-edge energy technology. TECO plans to cut its

carbon emissions by 60% by 2025 and 80% by 2040 in order to reach net-zero emissions.

Visit TECO’s website on carbon reduction, for more details on its goals for 2050. University of South Florida officials announced that the school reached an all-time high in the U.S. News and World Report’s annual ranking of the best colleges in America.

The university now sits at No. 42 among all public institutions. Additionally, USF continues its distinction as the fastest-rising university in the nation over the past 10 years.

Melissa Seixas, state president of Duke Energy Florida said. “We have completed our commitment to build 700 MW of solar by 2022. By 2024, we plan to provide 1,500 MW of solar generation as part of our ongoing strategy to offer cleaner, smarter energy solutions that will benefit all Florida customers.”

They recently announced the completion of 10 solar facilities located throughout Florida. With a combined investment of more than $2 billion, Duke Energy Florida’s solar generation portfolio will, by 2024 include 25 grid-tied solar power plants, which will provide about 1,500 MW of emission-free generation from about 5 million solar panels. Duke Energy Florida, owns 10,300 megawatts of energy capacity, supplying electricity to 1.9 million residential, commercial and industrial customers across 13,000-square-miles in Florida.

Florida’s Electric Vehicle (EV) Infrastructure Deployment Plan was approved ahead of schedule under the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program, by the Biden administration in mid-September. The plan is to implement high-power chargers across over 6,244 miles of designated EV corridors in the state of Florida.

Florida is now one of 35 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico with approved plans, the FHWA said. The state plans to add 6,772 public charging ports to its charging network using funding from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Florida now has access to their share of more than $900 million in NEVI formula funding to help build EV charges across the country. Florida is estimated to receive $198 million in funding with almost $30 million expected in 2022.

Sargassum, a type of seaweed that is brownish red in color, has been washing up on Caribbean and South Florida beaches in huge quantities this summer. It recently also made it to Pass-a-Grille. As it decom poses, Sargassum releases an unpleasant rotten eggs smell.

In May 18 million tons were removed from the east coast beaches. In June it was 24 million tons. Miami tried burying it in the sand, but it was not a good idea. The Fort Lauderdale government has been collecting the seaweed and taking it to an open space where it is left to mature for 90 days and become rich soil. Then planting projects in the city utilize it. This month, it reached Pass-a-Grille.

SOVEREIGN BOAT CLUB

A First-Class Boating Experience

You have heard that boat owners are happiest the day they buy their boat and then again the day they sell it. In between, the second or third biggest investment in your life sits behind your home depreciating as the salt air and saltwater take their inevitable toll.

Sovereign Boat Club (SBC) was founded in 2019 for Floridians who want a first class boating experience – without the high cost of ownership. They keep their local boats at Maximo Marina, the Harborage, and Port 32 in Tierra Verde, where they are convenient to all of our local readers, are protected, and close to Boca Ciega Bay, the Intracoastal and the Gulf of Mexico.

WHY IS SBC MEMBERSHIP MUCH BETTER THAN BUYING AND OWNING YOUR OWN?

There’s No High Cost to Buy – Boat prices have gone up 10% in the past year. Boat Clubs cost a small fraction.

Borrowing Cost Uncertainty – Access to easy, cheap money for financing purchases like homes, cars and boats appears to be ending as interest rates rise.

Asset Depreciation – An industry rule of thumb is that the value of a new boat drops 25% upon delivery and it will be worth 50% of the purchase price after four to five years of use.

Time Needed to Manage – The time for an owner to manage and maintain a boat can easily exceed the time spent on the boat for pleasure. What do you charge an hour for your time?

Annual Operating Expenses Going Up – Limited slip availability, fewer tradesmen to do maintenance and insurance claims from hurricanes have raised expenses significantly.

What, Me Worry? If you own a boat the answer is “Yes!” Potential problems on boats are everywhere: a leaky fuel line, a split intake hose, frayed electrical wires, galvanic corrosion, etc.

A FEW OTHER REASONS TO BELONG TO SBC

Treat yourself to an upscale boating experience for a life well-lived, an experience you’ve always wanted – with no worries and at low cost. It is “Hassle Free Boating” featuring full day use reservations of the spacious vessels 23- to 37-foot vessels.

Seasonal memberships are offered for seasonal residents who reside locally part time.

Do you have a business client you want to impress, or thank? On-board entertaining of friends and business associates on a premium boat that is all but yours, will be enchanting for them and very satisfying for you.

Or do you prefer an undisturbed afternoon to get away? There’s nothing better than a fun day on a premium boat. You get the idea.

If you’re not sure boat ownership is right for your family, SBC is a low-cost, low-risk alternative to find out the kind and size of boat you might like to own. Memberships last no longer than one year and may be transferrable. If you want to go boating, consider joining Sovereign Boat Club for affordable, stress-free access to one of these amazing local boats.

Before you take a step toward boat ownership, check out the SBC website www.sovereignboatclub.com Email sales@sovereignboatclub.com or call Greg Sweeney at 727-200-3474 for answers to any of your questions. Tell them you read about them in Paradise NEWS and your first month of membership is FREE when you join.

COCKTAIL CULTURE The Saint Hotel’s 82 Degrees features craft cocktails and a hip vibe, with live music nightly and Fri.-Sun. afternoons, Monday Industry Nights and Wine Wednesday. A fantastic happy hour rocks from noon-4pm Mon.-Sat. with $5 margaritas and well pours plus four $3 domestic drafts. Get refreshed with the Freshwater Cucumber mocktail or Blackberry Bluegrass (Pinhook straight Kentucky bourbon, crème de mure, lime, blackberries, and ginger beer). Red Mesa Mercado takes over the Two Graces location next to freeFall Theater, with a full liquor bar and their jalapeno margaritas. Taverna Costale’s indoor/outdoor bar and sexy dining room may be my new fave downtown, helmed by Executive Chef Chris Ruiz serving lunch, brunch and dinner with four big screen TVs. There is a mimosa tasting board with mango and grapefruit flavors and I recommend the extraordinary cocktail list, especially the Bevanda Tiki (Planta tion Three Star Rum, Plantation OFTD Rum, Montenegro Amaro, Orgeat, Citrus) or Vecchio Amore (Prosciutto Washed Woodinville Bourbon, House Fig-Maple Syrup, Black Walnut Bitters).

AUTUMN COCKTAIL We love a Washington Apple shot, straight or on the rocks. Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice, shake well and pour into a shot glass. Mix 1.25 oz. Crown Royal Fine De Luxe, .25 oz. apple schnapps and 1.5 oz. cranberry juice.

Why not refresh your home for fall with quick and inexpensive trending ideas and colors? It’s easy to do with a bit of fabric, flowers, candles, paint, new art, gently used treasures and stick-on wallpaper accents. Browse local vintage shops, Home Goods, Tuesday Morning and home consignment stores after combing Pinterest for ideas.

What’s out in overall styles? Modern Farmhouse, open kitchens, mid-century modern boho, minimalism, monochromatic all-white interiors, stainless steel kitchens. We’re liking bold ‘70s style/color interiors, Barbiecore, French style a la Diane Keaton’s kitchen and coastal grandmother (cozy cabins + vintage).

Gone are last year’s gray and blue tones. This autumn, royal purple, teal, Kelly green, hot pink, shimmery metallics, marigold, cinnamon, mushroom, rust and creamy orange are in charge of your room’s palette. Still popular is sage green, for kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities and walls.

Change out pillows or use a sheet/towel to recover a chair seat. Layer in some of these warmer colors and a few fall accents. Fringed accents - from lamp shade

tassels to drapery, rugs and pillows – with a rock’n’roll vibe rule. Warm neutral tones and luxurious textures can transform your room into a cozy retreat. Also popular is the use of organic materials from rattan pumpkins and woven vases to weathered stone and wood finishes.

For furnishings, opt for natural wood to create a calming environment to ground this fall’s lighter, airier space renovations. It works well for kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, updating grey-toned woods so popular till now. Flooring also gets a refresh with checkerboard patterns, especially sophisticated black and white. Checkerboard spills over to bedding, rugs, and mugs.

Perhaps your home needs more than a quick décor fix. Shopping for home improvement professionals who can walk you through design ideas that fit your budget is a pleasure when you work with respected advertisers such as those you’ll see here in Paradise News’ new Home Improvement section. FALL FASHION

Let’s put the yoga pants and dressy pajamas on the back burner and get our style groove back in. On-trend clothes don’t have to be expensive labels.

One my fave fashionistas is publisher Renee Roos, once a dancer with a costume flair in her younger days. “Whatever you wear, make a statement. This season, I’m loving the simple elegance of black and white as my signature look,” says Roos, whose accessories gleaned from her travels also have a fab back story.

Fashion magazines sing the praises of faux leather leggings, studded clogs, puffy sleeves, low rise maxi skirts, vintage-inspired checkered sweater vest, ‘70s style, belted jackets, a long camel open cardigan, big pants (cargo) with little shirt, a Chelsea boot and sneaker all in one and boots baby!

We like the return of classics such as the white shirt, white tanks with blue denim and leather jackets both short and slimly long. We’ll skip the trending bomber jacket, suit vest and ultra-baggy jeans. Also cool is the preppy update from Prada’s pleated midi to Marine Serre’s punk-inspired tartan, polished loafers, and kilt-inspired skirts. But the real star into the holidays is sequins, shiny paillettes like those on the runway from Bottega Venetta, Altuzarra and others. And I long for Net-A-Porter’s elegant black maxidress.

So where are we shopping? We adore Elizabeth’s Boutique, Pippa Pelure, Misred Outfitters, Patchington, Cassie & Co. Fashions, Suzette’s On The Rocks, Suzette’s Too and Annabelle’s. Budget-minded shoppers can update their wardrobes by hunting for gently used clothing and accessories at Anona Thrift Shop, Attic Shoppe, CASA Thrift Shop, Creative Thrift Art Store, Pass-A-Grille Beach Community Church Thrift Shop, St. Vincent’s Thrift Shop, Church by the

Sea Thrift Store. Visit consignment stores for more treasures, especially Janna’s, The Closet Room, So Chic, Designer Exchange, ArtPool and ReTreat St. Pete, Plato’s Closet, Designers Consigner and Vintage Marche. For evening wear, Rent The Runway is my go-to spot.

With fall, the social season heats up. Do a good deed and dress up for some of the best partieswith a cause such as St. Pete Glitter Queen Party 11/4, Suncoast Hosptice 29th annual fashion show 2023, LAMPLighters ‘Fall Into Fashion 10/26, the 8th annual Sueños de Dalí with a zodiac costume theme 10/22 and The Stuart Society’s Smartly Dressed Fashion Show presented by Dillard’s 11/10.

Women’s Club 1922-2022

The Pass-a-Grille Woman’s Club has been a social and community service club since it was formed. Just a year after the hurricane of 1921, a resident family had lost everything in a fire and neighbors responded with a “pound party,” where everyone brought a pound of something to help their neighbor get by.

The social interaction and feeling of sharing were the foundations of the organization. Early meetings were held in Page’s Pavilion, located where the Legendary Hurricane Restaurant now stands. When the Sunshine School opened, the club purchased the prior schoolhouse on 10th Avenue to become their first clubhouse. When they outgrew that location they negotiated a private mortgage to build their current club house on Pass-a-Grille Way, just south of the Yacht Club at Pass-a-Grille. They paid off and burned the mortgage with surprising speed.

Over the years the club has held fundraisers, the most memorable being tours of some of Pass-a-Grille’s finest homes, a peak into the lives of residents for a $20 ticket. Charities benefitting are like a who’s who of worthy causes. They also host some of the best Halloween parties, play bridge and Mahjong and meet monthly.

The Pass-a-Grille Woman’s Club is celebrating their centennial this year with a successful garden tour last May, a shuffleboard tournament in Pass-a-Grille,

Centennial Celebration!

a Beach Walk on Oct. 15, a grand gala at the Sirata Beach Resort on Nov. 18, and a new history book of Pass-a-Grille’s last 100 years from the club’s perspective.

The book will list the many not-for-profit organizations that the club has donated proceeds to over the years. It will also include historical information about Pass-a-Grille that has not been published before. As of press time there were still tickets and a couple sponsor opportunities available for the gala on Nov. 18. Check on Eventbrite, if interested.

PROPERTY LAW

LOOKING BACK

If you have British friends, be sure to thank them for allowing us to peek through their windows at the amazing Royal History that they have lived through this year.

The 70 years of Queen Elizabeth’s reign have been fascinating, and the English have proven themselves valuable allies on many occasions. Of course, that is also true for the first half of the 20th Century, and the two world wars where we proved our value as allies.

Most present day Americans probably date the earliest prior history (from our perspective, at least) as starting with Columbus, followed by English, Dutch, Spanish and other European colonization of the land which we now call America.

Most law students, however, will tell you that the important earlier history has a date in common with English common law, that is 1066 AD, when William the Conqueror (a Norseman, aka Viking) crossed the English Channel and captured the English throne.

Not only is that date the start of the Medieval period of English history and the

line of English kings and queens familiar to Americans today (Henry, George, Edward, Richard, and Queens Victoria and Elizabeth, etc.), it is also the birth of what became English common law, which was actually feudalism carried across the English channel by William the Conqueror. Later, in the new world, each American colony or state that joined the new nation adopted the English common law in place on (or about) the date of their admission to the union.

Most of that common law no longer applies in England today, having been replaced by statutes. But it is much easier to understand what is now American common law if you understand English common law and some of that history.

The “Dark Ages,” before the modern Royal line begins, shows that the Vikings

plundered and even took over some of the provinces that would become England, starting at the monastery in Lindisfahrne in 793 AD (Northumbria). In the following years they defeated several of the local kings, and their kingdoms were surrendered to the Vikings. If you ever look at historic maps of England, you will notice large areas labelled as “Danelaw,” a reference to the huge impact which being occupied by the Danish Vikings had on the law, language and culture of England.* Footnote

If there ever was an actual King Arthur (of which there is really no evidence), it would have been prior to these events.

There will be a quiz later. FN *Although my family name is Danish, I have no evidence that any of my ancestors participated in those battles!

Join USF in the Fight Against Alzheimer’s Disease

The University of South Florida PACT (Preventing Alzheimer’s with Cognitive Training) study needs healthy volunteers to join the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. The study focuses on using computerized brain training exercises with the hope to reduce dementia risk.

If you or a loved one are interested in more info, please visit the PACT study website, pactstudy.org, or call 727-873-4090

The USF PACT team is looking for 3,000 healthy volunteers to combat the growing incidence of dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease.

PACT is currently enrolling adults aged 65 and older with no signs of cognitive impairment, dementia, or neurological disorders. Once accepted into the study, participants will begin their exercises at a PACT location such as Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota, Lakeland or Winter Haven.

“We are very grateful to the 1,800 volunteers from Tampa Bay who have already joined our fight against Alzheimer’s disease by enrolling in PACT,” said principal investigator Jerri Edwards, PhD, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences in the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.

Past research shows that computerized training can help maintain mental and physical function. Healthy older adults who were prescribed 10 sessions of such training had a 29% lower risk of dementia after 10 years. Those completing additional training benefited even more: they were 48% less likely to show signs of dementia 10 years later.

Alzheimer’s disease affects an estimated 6.2 million Americans, including 1 in 9 people aged 65 and older, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. This number is projected to nearly triple to 14 million by 2060. African Americans and Hispanics are especially encouraged to enroll in PACT, as they are nearly twice as likely to suffer from dementia.

As of today, there are no proven cures or treatments that stop the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia. The few medications currently on the market only provide short-term management of symptoms for those who already have dementia. This is why studies like PACT are so important.

For those currently enrolled in the study, the entire PACT team appreciates your contribution to science and your efforts in fighting Alzheimer’s disease.

If there was a way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, would you try it?

Robert King, LMT, Muscular & Structural Rehabilitation specialist has served his clients for over 10 years by providing highly effective hands-on techniques that help increase mobility, decrease pain, and create freedom from long-term injuries and misalignment.

A recent client experiencing severe pain was concerned that the shots she had received were not helping much and more shots might not help either. During the first three sessions, Robert began myofascial release and myoskeletal alignment techniques to activate the muscles which were not firing, quiet down the muscles that were overactive and soothe the fascial tissue allowing for increased muscular and skeletal function. The client

experienced an immediate decrease in discomfort and increased function.

On session #4, the client turned to Robert and told him, “You know, I was going to get a new hip on Thursday [four days in the future], I am not going to do that now.”

Since that time, his client’s progress has been steady and ever-increasing towards full mobility and experiencing days with no pain.

Robert’s optometrist had a significant limp, having suffered a severe skiing accident 18 months earlier. After his eye examination he asked if he could watch her walk to provide her with a “gait analysis.” Upon visual analysis, he suggested that myofascial release and myoskeletal realignment techniques could assist her.

The first and second sessions provided new relief from the tension and pain that she had been experiencing for 18 months during which she had worked with physical therapists, neurologists, orthopedists and chiropractors without much relief. Not one of these professionals ever asked to see her walk to provide a gait analysis.

For the third session, Robert applied a myoskeletal technique which realigned her hip bone to move her injured leg into a more congruent pattern. Upon standing up the client exclaimed “my leg is straight.” The rehabilitative work continues to improve both the alignment of the leg and ease of ambulatory motion.

Robert holds continuing education training certifica tions in Myofascial Release, Myoskeletal Alignment Technique, Structural Energetic Therapy®, Neuromuscular Therapies, Pre/Post Surgery Scar Tissue Release, Active Isolated Stretching, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, and Soothing Relaxation Massage to provide foundational long-term health and wellness.

CBD & WELLNESS

What is CBD vs. Delta 8 vs. Delta 9 THC?

In Florida, understanding these three terms will help you navigate the cannabis landscape. Hemp’s history goes back to thousands of years. The Cannabis plant is one of the world’s oldest cultivated crops. “Archeologists have found hemp fibers dating back 10,000 years” according to the book The Basics of Hemp and Marijuana. The oldest record of marijuana’s medicinal use dates back to 4000 B.C. when the plant was used for its anesthetic properties. Cannabis had made its way to the Middle East and India by 1000 B.C. and was prized for its ability to relieve anxiety.

Why was it criminalized when it was a time tested, widely used plant? The answer dates back to 1910 when the Mexican Revolution caused great unrest in the country. One custom the Mexican immigrants enjoyed was the use of marijuana as a recreational drug. Americans were use to the substance as medicine. Americans, unaware that this “marijuana” was the very same cannabis that sat in their medicine cabinets, were convinced that the immigrants had introduced a dangerous new drug to the country. Perhaps the worst consequence is that this has prevented many from seeing the drug as a viable medicinal remedy.

CBD is derived from the hemp plant. It does not cause a euphoric feeling. The World Health Organization reports it exhibits no effects of any abuse or dependence potential. Studies and research in humans suggest CBD may help with anxiety, insomnia, pain, and seizures. I take 25mg CBD watermelon gummies daily.

Delta 8 is made from hemp. The 2018 farm bill states cannabis with less than 0.3% THC is considered hemp. Anything that naturally derives from hemp is federally legal. Delta 8 is psychoactive. Because it is unregulated, it is important to purchase high quality, lab tested Delta 8. It is sometimes paired with CBD to boost its effects. The Goods has quality gummies, vapes, blunts, topicals and tinctures.

Delta 9 THC requires a Florida medical marijuana card to purchase at a dispensary. It comes from the marijuana plant with over .3% THC. THC has psychoactive effects which cause euphoria and traditional known effects including medicinal effects. Delta 9 can be extracted from the hemp plant as well and is called Delta 9 hemp derived THC. At The Goods we offer high quality hemp extracted cannabidiols across the spectrum.

I am always committed to providing organic, high-quality, third party lab tested products for my clients. Stop by my shop: The Goods. CBD. Hemp, Relief. 2939 Central Avenue St. Petersburg, FL 33713. CANCER COACH

Old Northeast resident and market ing guru Bill Potts is a motivational speaker, creative business leader, energetic community builder, IRONMAN athlete, dedicated father, and husband...and a five-time cancer survivor (his current fight against #6 is ongoing). Potts has written an indispensable handbook for anyone going through a cancer diagnosis: UP FOR THE FIGHT: How to Advocate for Yourself as You Battle Cancer - from a Five-Time Survivor (available on Amazon).

Jam-packed with knowledge, insight, and advice Potts wishes he never had to learn, UP FOR THE FIGHT explains exactly what to expect and shares lessons and important tips you can put into action along the way: from diagnosis, to treatment, to remission, to cure–and how to face setbacks on the road to recovery.

WELLNESS

Potts loves living in paradise, and can often be found running the waterfront, kayaking Coffee Pot Bayou, biking downtown St. Pete, playing tennis at the Vinoy or walking his dog, Pippa. He’s passionate about the environment and spent almost five years as chief marketing and revenue officer of Clearwater Marine Aquarium. “I knew Winter well and played hide and seek with Hope every morning! I made Cheeto the Lucky Seahorse famous.”

EXERCISE ZONES With cooler weather, rejoice in outdoors fitness adventures around town. There are people-powered exercise equipment free to use during park hours in Lealman, Gulfport, Clearwater, Dunedin and Largo. Check out downtown St. Pete parks such as Azalea, Bartlett, Booker Creek, Campbell, Crisp, Gladden, Jorgenson Lake, Kiwanis, Lake Vista, North Shore and Riviera Bay. (Fitness Zones at Southwest Recreation Complex and Azalea Park have wheelchair-accessible exercise equipment.) City recreation centers feature

outdoors yoga (Madeira Beach) and aqua aerobics (St. Pete Beach). The Pier District hosts a variety of fitness classes, including boot camp, sunset yoga, a monthly Zumba class and Hoola Flow. My favorite? Yoga with goats at DK Farms.

EYE SIGHS Staring at the computer screen too long or binging your favorite fall series can cause eye strain headaches. Symptoms of digital strain include blurry vision, dry eyes, pain in your neck and shoulders, or a dull ache behind your eyes. In addition to taking a break every two hours for at least 20 minutes, move yourself or your computer monitor back so that it is at least 20 to 25 inches away from your eyes. Wear glasses that protect your eyes from blue light when using the computer and use a screen glare filter. Avoid doing work in the dark by keeping the room well lit. Increase the font on the screen so that you aren’t squinting and be sure to sit up straight and make sure your chair has good back support.

FAMILY MEDICINE

Becoming Your Partner in This Healthcare Journey

Having recently opened my office in St. Petersburg, I’m excited to be a part of Millennium Physician Group and practice the type of medicine I believe can really make a difference in patients’ lives. Our physicians and care teams lead the nation in the quality of care we deliver to patients of Medicare age. And we specialize in all the preventive care that’s been proven to lead to healthier outcomes.

I see myself not only as your primary-care doctor but also as your partner on this journey we’re taking together. I aim to provide evidence-based guidance while fostering a patientcentered environment. What that really means is evolving past the traditional approach of just doing as your doctor says. Every patient’s situation is unique, so I want to marry the most up-to-date evidence and research with a patient-focused environment to figure out the best approach for each patient.

I grew up in Queens, New York, and have lived in North Carolina, Philadelphia, and Michigan. I did my residency here in St. Petersburg and was eager to return to the area. This is a growing community with a lot to offer. It has the best of all worlds. You get the beach life, you get the city life, and you get the chance to enjoy all of the things in between as well.

I became a doctor because I’ve always had an intense desire to help people. My clinical interests are lifestyle and obesity medicine, preventive medicine, men’s health, and also sports medicine. I played Division I basketball at Wake Forest University and was a personal trainer before going to medical school, so that experience allows me the opportunity to use a unique approach to helping patients.

When it comes to men’s health, I’ve noticed men generally not wanting to go to the doctor and just sort of putting their health to the side and not making it a priority. I definitely want to provide an opportunity for men to seek the care they need because there are a lot of things men can do to extend their life and have a good quality of life.

For all my patients, there are a lot of things we can do before a health crisis happens to help mitigate the severity, and that’s why prevention is so important. All positive improvements, whether large or small, are successes to me. I believe in the adage, “You have to crawl before you walk.” So I aim not to lose sight of that. At each step of the process, I try to acknowledge every improvement patients have made toward bettering their health. That’s how we truly become their connection to a healthier life.

Eating well is getting more interesting this fall. Meat alternatives such as Beyond Meat burgers and Impossible Burgers are nothing new, but vegan nuggets, plant-based seafood and pepperoni for pizza are newly popular. International dishes from Asia and the Caribbean have been popular, but this will be the year that African cuisine moves mainstream. According to Food Network, foods that feature cannabis such as artisanal pizzas, tasty pies and alcohol-free THC-infused cocktails are seeing a surge. I’m experimenting with umami flavors, looking to savory pastes made of ingredients such as roasted or dried tomatoes, garlic, black olives and more to flavor soups and stews.

Healthy eating graces our family gatherings. At Thanksgiving, we’ll consume 46 million turkeys. While the traditional dishes will dominate our Thanksgiving table (roast turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, gravy, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole and pumpkin pie), the trend this year is more vegan and ethnic dishes. In San Diego, tamales were al ways served and at my house, Greek spinach pie and tzatziki.

This year, new holiday trends include locally sourced foods from our farmers’ markets, spaghetti squash, kalette (a hybrid of kale and brussel sprouts), pumpkin pie alternatives (PSL desserts such as pumpkin spice latte pound cake or praline pumpkin mousse) and catered options for Thanksgiving with dishes picked up from restaurants and grocery stores. The vegetarian main dish will be center stage in some homes as well, such as vegetarian lasagna or this delight.

VEGAN GLUTEN-FREE LENTIL LOAF

Ingredients 1 1/2 cups lentils;

3 1/2 cups vegetable broth, or water;

3 TB olive oil; 2 medium onions, diced; 2 cloves garlic, minced; 2 cups cooked brown rice; 1/2 tsp. kosher salt;

3/4 cup ketchup divided; 1/2 tsp. sage, 3/4 tsp. Italian seasoning

Cook Heat oven to 350 F. Rinse the lentils and drain well. Fill a large soup or stockpot with vegetable broth (or water) and add the lentils. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer until cooked, for about 30 minutes. Lentils need to be soft for the best results. Drain thoroughly. Mash the lentils while they are still hot until they are creamy in texture but some whole lentils can be seen. Set aside. Heat the olive oil in a medium-sized skillet. Add the onions and garlic and sauté for 3 to 5 minutes, or until soft. Combine the onion mixture, mashed lentils, cooked rice, salt, 1/4 cup of ketchup or barbecue sauce, sage, and Italian seasoning. Mix well. Gently press the entire lentil mixture into a greased loaf pan. Coat the loaf with 1 or 2 tablespoons of the remaining ketchup. Bake the lentil loaf for 1 hour, basting with additional ketchup every 15 minutes or so. Allow it to cool slightly for about 15 minutes before slicing and serving, as this will help the lentil loaf firm up.

HANGING AROUND

As the days grow shorter many minds turn to what to wear to celebrate autumn festivals. From Germany’s Octoberfest and Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos to Diwali in India and our very own Halloween, fall is when we get crazy before the winter chill descends. (Here in Florida, there’s not much of a chill, but it might cool off enough to flaunt Aunt Eunice’s fox jacket.)

Need ideas? Here’s a whirlwind tour of local emporiums where you can get your dapper on.

Designers’ Consigner: Lots of high-end bargains organized by size and color. Come for the couture but stay for the home decor. You’ll be wowed by local artist Roland Chew’s wildly colorful photographs and plenty of mid-century modern finds. (OK, not costume material, but fun nonetheless.) The sister store, Designer Exchange, has similar merchandise.

Andrea & Friends: First you’ll linger over the jewelry case with its bottomless trays of antique and vintage baubles. If you like Victorian, Edwardian or Art Deco rings and things you’ll be in heaven. (I admit to trying on some bling.) The rest of the store is a museum of lovely satin dresses, plenty of fur, weird old uniforms, miles of affordable costume jewelry. And hats the likes of which you’ve only seen in old movies.

ARTpool: The granddaddy of them all. Here the Sultana of Style Marina Williams flitters about to help you find your unique look. The store is organized by decade from the 1920s to the ‘90s, so Marina can easily point you in the right direction. Not much 100-year-old fabric has survived, so her tailors repurpose new stuff to look old. (I tried on a couple of flapper-ish dresses just for fun.)

Outfitted in a dashing striped jumpsuit and multicolored eyeglasses with accessories ranging from beads on top of beads to chunky rings, chandelier earrings and more, Marina’s philosophy is more is more. “The experts may say after you’re done accessorizing, take something off. I say, ‘put something else on!’”

Summertime is winding down and (not soon enough) we will begin to experience cooler weather. Unfortunately, over the last week we have treated two patients with heat exhaus tion and stroke. The temperatures outside are such that even a short period of time being active outdoors during the day is dangerous.

Our first patient of the week was only outside for 30 minutes on a walk when he started to show signs of respiratory distress (difficulty breathing). His initial temperature on presentation was 105.6F which quickly escalated to 106.5F. His respiratory distress was so severe that it caused his larynx to swell, causing laryngeal edema (swelling and inflammation of the “voice box” apparatus) as well as pulmonary edema (fluid buildup in the lungs). We were able to reduce his temperature through aggressive intravenous fluid therapy and topical therapy. His respi ratory distress resolved with medications and normalization of his temperature.

PET HEALTH

Our next patient presented in respiratory distress after a few hours of running in and out of a camper for three hours. He was a very large brachycephalic (short nosed) pit bull whose presenting temperature was 106.1F. We were able to quickly normalize his tem perature, however severe laryngeal edema and moderate pulmonary edema developed in this patient also, which we treated with various medications. Exacerbated by his short nose and subsequent long soft palate, he continued to have difficulty breathing and was sedated to normalize the distress.

Both patients survived their ordeals but there is a very important lesson here. Although there are multiple factors that increase the possibility of heat exhaustion/stroke, each pet is different and this can happen to any pet. Long walks are not recommended during the heat of the day this time of year. Try to exercise your pet early morning or later in the evening.

Signs of heat stroke / exhaustion include the following:

• Heavy panting/difficulty breathing

• Fever, typically above 103F

• Muddy colored, purple blue, or bright red tongue

• Rapid heart rate

• Lethargy and weakness

• Vomiting

• Diarrhea

• Difficulty walking – pet may look drunk

If you notice any of these symptoms, call and take your pet to your veterinarian or to an emergency clinic immediately.

Insurance Bills Rise as Industry Crisis Continues

“If you have looked at your insurance bills lately, you have probably seen increased costs on property and flood insurance. On the property or homeowner’s insurance side of rate increases, you are seeing rates rise for three primary reasons.  On a national level, rates are rising due to an increase in claim costs and rising home value/construction costs.  We also have a Florida factor that multiplies both of these increases. Claim inflation is occurring based on significantly increased claims costs over the past three years,” Jake Holehouse, head of H&H Insurance, St. Petersburg, commented for Paradise News, “Think about the average home and the cost of a new kitchen.

In 2019 that kitchen was between $6,500-$20,000.  Three years later the same kitchen costs $25,000- $60,000.

When you compound that across a book of business as an insurance carrier it is a huge loss driver. “As an example, if we assume that an insurance company has 100,000 claims/ year with an expected loss cost of $15,000 per claim, they are expecting losses to be $1.5 billion.  When claim costs increase to $45,000 per claim the new losses are $4.5 billion - creating a $3 billion shortfall that is passed on to consumers as rate increases.

“From a flood insurance standpoint, the Pinellas barrier islands are also seeing large rate increases right now.  In October 2021, FEMA enacted Risk Rating 2.0 for all new business policies and all renewal policies on April 2022. This policy change has resulted in 200% to 1,000% rate increases.  For renewal policies, policyhold ers are and will be seeing 18% annual increases until they reach their new Risk Rating 2.0 rate. The main challenge is that 99.9% of properties are in a flood zone so there is more demand than capacity.  We have also seen increased rate pressure for slab on grade type homes within the private markets as the homes are the most likely to have damage.  Elevated homes are also seeing increased rates under Risk Rating 2.0, but they have several private flood coverage options.

“Unfortunately, the overall outlook for Florida insurance is grim as a result of a manmade hurricane in the form of a litigation environment.  This, on top of tough operating results with inflation and construction price increases takes this Category 3 to a Category 5 hurricane.”

Holehouse and his professional staff encourage all local home and business owners to contact the agency for a free no obligation consultation on insurance needs with a call to 727-498-5551 or 727-601-0988.

“Probably the biggest shock we have noticed when quoting flood insurance to our clients using FEMA’s NFIP new 2.0 rating sys tem is the jump in premium for elevated homes,” Jim Everett, vice-president of Great Florida Insurance and Everett Financial Group LLC, told Paradise News, “For example, an elevated home in St. Pete Beach that had a flood insurance premium of $636, increased to over $11,000 with Rating 2.0.  The primary driver for this is FEMA’s decision to consider the building’s value in the premium calculation.  This is in spite of the fact that the maximum payout on a standard NFIP flood policy is $250,000.

“The other big shock that will take place over time is that Rating 2.0 eliminated grandfathering.  Homes that were build pre-firm will have their flood insurance premiums increase by as much as 18% a year until they reach a full actuarial premium.

“A stark example of this change is my own house in Redington Shores.  My home was built in 1955 and is concrete block construction and slab on grade.  It is approximately four and a half feet below base flood elevation.  My flood insurance is currently about $3,500 a year but will eventually increase to about $5,000/year as my grandfathered discount evaporates.  The strange thing is if I were to spend $200,000 to elevate my home six and a half feet, to two feet over base flood elevation, my premium would still be about $5,000/year.  There is no financial incentive for me to elevate my home to avoid flooding.

“Residents and businesses should contact their insurance agents to discuss their options for both property and flood insurance.  Everett Financial Group, your local GreatFlorida independent insurance agency in Madeira Beach, is always delighted to help with any insurance needs.  All of our employees are licensed insurance agents and are ready to assist our friends and neighbors. Call 727-437-3200 for a complimentary consultation,” concluded Everett.

“We’ve lost a minimum of five carriers due to insolvency,” Elissa Stenders, Principal Agent at Bentley DeNight Insurance, told Paradise News. “Several others are having their Demotech ratings withdrawn from the A or B rating to no rating at all, mostly due to unprecedented claim payouts.

“A handful of roofing companies with attorneys on staff are going door-to-door, calling, texting and using social media to convince homeowners they can get a new roof for just the cost of their deductible. Insurance wasn’t put in place to be a maintenance program on your home.”

“In my opinion, one of the largest reasons the homeowner’s insurance is increasing 30-60% is because these homeowners with 15 and 20-year-old roofs (that need to be replaced due to maintenance) are filing fraudulent claims due to ‘wind damage’. The insurance companies are over a barrel and paying the claims because they are coming from a licensed professional with a possible “lawsuit” attached to it. They know it would cost more to fight it in court.

“As agents, we only have a handful of property insurance carriers we can quote. Citizens has become the carrier of last resort for consumers due to their lower premiums and more accepting underwriter guidelines. The roofs still have to fall within a specific age range, but Citizens allows more coverage territory than the few other carriers that are still writing new business. They are being inundated with customers because their premiums are so reasonable compared to everyone else.“In regards to flood Insurance, homeowners need to know when their bill is due and make sure it’s paid by the due date. There is a 29-day grace period, but you should never wait that long. I recently saw a $875

premium increase to $7,500 because they paid their policy 30 days late. When they paid late it created a 30-day waiting period that kicked them into the new 2.0 Flood rating.

“This will not always be the case, but the properties that are located closer to the water are more in line for the higher rates. The 2.0 rating is done differently than previously and with my example you can tell it’s a much higher rating platform. When buying a new home, always check to see if the current owner has a Flood Insurance policy and see if you can assume their policy. In a lot of cases this will save you money.

“Here at Bentley DeNight Insurance, we are more than willing to answer any questions you may have. We are happy to compare or explain anything you may have questions on with a call to 727- 344-4500.”

To add insult to injury, the Florida Insurance Guaranty Association (FIGA) a not-for-profit that covers claims from defunct insurance companies got surcharges approved for all Florida insurance poli cies, adding another 2% increase to cover losses from bankruptcies of St. Johns, Avatar, Lighthouse, Weston and Southern Fidelity. The good news for home and business owners is that 2% is the max assessment FIGA can place on insurance companies in one year unless there is a hurricane in the state –then they can assess up to another 4%.

Keep your fingers crossed and hope the claims issue is dealt with while we still have property insurers.

SEA DOG BREWING CO.

Sea Dog Brewing Co. Celebrates 5 Years by Adding Breakfast

Sea Dog Brewing Co. wanted us to say thank you for the local support and “Cheers to five years! October 31st is our fifth anniversary party. Please stop in and have a pint on us with a purchase of appetizer.” General Manager Charlie Breakiron said. “We now open daily at 8am, serving the best local coffee and developing a reputation for “the best biscuits and gravy on the beach. It’s a 110-year-old recipe.” In true Sea Dog fashion there’s a Breakfast Club with discounts, and Mug Club members automatically belong.

Breakfast at Sea Dog is now served Monday through Thursday from 8-11am and 8-1pm Friday-Sunday. The 18 entrées listed on the current menu are top sellers with plenty of options, and Sea Dog does them all surprisingly well. They have five chefs of various ethnicities so there is always an expert in-house for perfect recipes. Order a chef-inspired omelette of the day, Barney’s Breakfast, Breakfast Pizza or Berry Berry Waffles for $10. You can have a yogurt parfait with granola for $8, build your own biscuit for $9, or the huge Breakfast Burrito for $12,

Chicken & Waffles $14, Hangover Burger $14, Bene dicts $12, ($26 with Lobster). Keep in mind that food costs are volatile so prices could change, but the point is that it is an awesome, affordable breakfast.

I loved the Lobster Benny with big, fresh chunks of warmed lobster tail covered in perfectly poached eggs and a delicious, light Hollandaise. Renee raved about the Shrimp & Grits $19, which became the next day’s lunch as well.

Care for a drink with your breakfast? Alcohol is served at 8am in Treasure Island daily except Sundays at 10am. Turn your menu over for several special breakfast drinks including Bloody Mary $5, Paloma, Boozy Coffee, Peach Bellini and more. A kids menu offers waffles $5 or scrambled eggs with bacon $6.

If you go for breakfast, tell them you read about them in Paradise NEWS and you will get FREE Kahwa COFFEE or take $5 off a minimum $25 or $10 off a minimum $50 bill (valid breakfast hours only). It is your gift from Paradise NEWS for trying breakfast at Sea Dog Brewing Co.

her own Barbie doll in their Inspiring Woman Collection; Hattie McDaniel, Oscar’s first Black winner; Clara Brown, Angel of the Rockies, one of the first African American women to settle in Colorado and became a very successful business woman; and Annie Box Neal, proprietor and manager of Arizona’s Mountain View Hotel, a secluded grand resort recognized as the “epitome of western opulence” in its day and that received distinguished guests from all over the world.

PICTORIAL QUILTS The James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art’s new special exhibition, Black Pioneers: Legacy in the American West is a first-of-its-kind-exhibition exploring Black history in the West with quilts depicting mighty women and men of color in history. The vivid, intricately detailed works of art have never been seen before and were created by the Women of Color Quilters Network and curated by Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi who founded the group in 1985.

“Quilts and quilt making are important to America and Black culture because the art form was historically one of the few mediums accessible to marginalized groups to tell their story, provide warmth for their families and empower them with voice through cloth,” said Dr. Mazloomi.

The 50 quilters represent artists from California to Florida and the art goes beyond needle and thread, weaving found objects such as lace hankies into the quilts. The women depicted are part of the fabric of every facet of society and will change the heart and mind of the spectator as they explore the exhibit.

AWESOME ARTISTS The fall arts season in Paradise debuts many stars. The Florida Orchestra celebrates its 55th season with Itzhak Perlman playing some of his favorite movie music. Greg Holland replaces Judy Lisi to lead the Straz Center into a stellar Broadway season (Six!). Erica Sutherlin breaks new barriers as American Stage’s first black female director and Helen R. Murray is their new producing artistic director this October. Anne-Marie Russell joins The Museum of Fine Arts as interim director, previously executive director of the Sarasota Museum of Art. Freefall Theatre’s diverse line-up includes an original musical about L. Frank Baum’s creation of Oz, a holiday musical “The Night Before” and “All Things Equal: The Life and Trials of Ruth Bader Ginsberg” 10/5-10/23. SENSATIONAL SEAFOOD

From breakfast to dinner, we’ve surfed seafood dishes worthy of King Neptune. Whether you cook fresh fish at home (Key West Shrimp Co.) or dine out at these excellent restaurants, you’ll swoon over these seafood dishes. Be sure to visit RumFish Grill, our cover star.

Cap’s Steamer Bar & Grill is downtown’s best new restaurant, from the surf and turf and steamed shrimp and delectable oysters to a recent special, the crispy skin Faroe Island salmon with honey brussels sprouts, and pomme pureé. For hogfish, reel in dinner at Bonefish or Middlegrounds. Chef Tyson’s new American cuisine at Parkshore Grill features incomparable mussels, shrimp pasta, surf and turf and ahi. Lingr’s Nordic Asian fusion rocks, especially the bluefin tuna with rock shrimp, espelette crispy rice and tomato powder.

Starting with the lobster Benedict at Treasure Island’s Sea Dog to Brick & Mortar’s bouillabaisse of seafood with coconut and spicy curry broth, both Gulf Beaches and St. Petersburg serve up sensational seafood.

Enjoy the piquant seafood paella at Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grill downtown (and coming to Tyrone) or marisco paella at Ceviche after an app of Iberian oysters. The Big Catch at Salt Creek, Trophy Fish is fun for sensational seafood, music, and people-watching, expecially the Ponzu marinated swordfish steak with sautéed broccolini & saffron mashed potato. For surf and turf, the classic allure of Il Ritorno and and Rococco steak paired with fine wines is captivating.

The Key West conch fritters at Billy’s in Tierra Verde and the view can’t be beat. Nothing’s better for Sunday football than smoked fish spread from Belleair Market, Nachmann’s or Ted Peters.

15, we’ll slurp them cold or hot with mustard sauce at Billy’s Stone Crab, Seafood and Lobster Restaurant, Frenchy’s, and Crabby Bill’s. (Frenchy’s Stone Crab weekend celebration is 10/28-29, Dunedin’s is 10/22 and Palm Pavillion’s is 10/30.)

For lobster rolls, The Helm and Island Grille are our faves, and you can’t go wrong at DJ’s Clam Shack. Maine lobster at Sea Salt is a treat as is the snow crab at Crabby Bill’s. With stone crab season starting Oct.

For oysters, slurp freshwater delights at The Island Grille, The Oyster Bar, Salt Rock Grill and Seaweeds. Cater your next party with Outer Banks signature seafood boil. You cannot duplicate the delicious clam or seafood chowder at Stillwater Tavern, Shells, and 400 Beach or the crab cakes, tuna poke and shrimp tacos at Tiki Docks Skyway Bar & Grill. For the signature Florida grouper sandwich, look no farther than Dockside Dave’s. Coconut fried shrimp lovers: Mango’s, J.D.’s and SeaBreeze deliver with island flair.

Dine globally with Asian-style seafood at Hawker’s Asian Street food, Buya’s seafood bowl with avocado or sushi from Pin, Wok & Bowl, Osaka Sushi, Nori Thai, Sekushi Sushi and Pacific Counter. We love pesce Italiano, especially Stefano’s black grouper in lobster cream sauce, Villa Gallace’s spicy shrimp or halibut piccante, Bella Brava’s spicy squid ink pasta and Da Sesto Italiano’s shrimp in white wine sauce, calamari with caper aioli and cioppino.

DIVE INTO AN UNDER-THE-SEA DINING EXPERIENCE

For the love of seafood. A favorite of locals and visitors alike, RumFish Grill’s superlative suppers and artisan cocktails are perfect for casual dining and special occasions. A part of St. Pete Beach’s award-winning Tradewinds Island Resorts, RumFish Grill is located in front of the popular RumFish Beach Resort.

On entering, you’ll enjoy browsing the massive aquatic-themed retail store, offering the largest selection of Guy Harvey apparel. On the walls, you will find buoys, antique fishing rods, historical black and white fishing photos, seaworthy murals, and artwork by Thomas Krause, one of Florida’s finest marine artists. The main attraction is the gorgeous 33,500-gallon aquarium in the main dining room, built by Animal Planet’s hit show Tanked and stocked with locally rescued fish from Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. (Visit the coastal marine life exhibit and viewing tank behind the aquarium.)

There are three separate areas to experience – the under-the-sea dining room, a large sports bar, and the outdoor deck. In the bar area, drink like a fish during Happy Hour with refreshing cocktails, wine, or beer with half-off appetizers. There’s a fully-stocked top-shelf liquor selection, local craft beers, alluring cocktails, rum flights, and an outstanding domestic and international wine list. Sip a Fish Tanked served in a 21 oz. keepsake glass, a wipe-out delight made with Brugal 1988 rum, apricot liqueur, Bacardi Mango rum, pineapple and orange juice, a dash of Angostura bitters, and Grenadine or a Jalapeño Pineapple Margarita.

RumFish is Hooked on a Cause and very passionate about the environment and proud to support the local community. Recently, RumFish Grill partnered with Simple Vodka – Fighting Hunger in Amer ica, One Drink at a Time. For each Simple Vodka, signature drink, or shot a guest purchases, a meal will be provided to those in need. Signature cocktails include: Lavender Mule made with Simple Vodka, Gosling’s Ginger Beer, freshly squeezed lime juice, lavender-flavored simple syrup, and a Simple Espresso Martini made with Simple Vodka, Kahlua, sim ple syrup, freshly brewed espresso, and rich vanilla syrup. Dive in each month with new cocktails that support a great cause, all season long!

On the bar menu, nibble succulent Za’atar-dusted calamari with red pepper coulis and pepperoncini aioli dips, or charred octopus with harissa pepper aioli, Florida snapper ceviche, tuna poke, cold water oysters, firecracker shrimp, grilled beef skewers or the three dips (chickpea, avocado cilantro, beet feta) with grilled naan bread.

Outstanding handhelds include the French onion burger with gruyère, a bronzed grouper sandwich, and shrimp tacos with avocado crema (two unique menus for dining room and bar area).

The restaurant’s under-the-sea atmosphere and illuminated menus will wow you. Executive Chef Jon Hilton’s flavor-packed starters, show-stealing entreés, and delectable desserts are sure to have you hooked, especially the chef’s specials. The Southern seafood boil featured snow crab, shrimp, crab, mussels, corn, and potato, and the Crispy Catch of the Day (snapper on our visit) is paired with Asian vegetables and steamed ginger rice with black bean harissa.

Dive into the pan-seared halibut, paired with roasted purple Peruvian potatoes, ginger, and lavender brodetto, black grouper, seared scallops, crab cake with pea tendrils, lobster mac and cheese, or the jerked swordfish served with pineapple ancho relish, rum butter, and jewel potatoes. Choose a sauce for your premium hand-cut filet mignon or ribeye (herb gremolata, Roquefort butter, Bearnaise, or cognac cracked pepper sauce). Add a sharable side for the table, especially the broccoli rabe, truffle mac & cheese, asparagus, couscous, or farro risotto, a vegan smorgasbord.

Entrées are served with bread and butter, sensational sides and the service is attentive. Vegetarians will love the Moroccan-spiced grilled cauliflower steak, and some dishes can be modified to be gluten-free. For little snappers 10 and under, choose an entrée, side, and drink for $14 (popcorn shrimp, chicken tenders, grilled Mahi, pasta, grouper fingers, or a junior cheeseburger).

Save room for dessert, especially the decadent Molten Chocolate Lava with salted caramel ice cream, the classic Florida key lime pie, the apple cinnamon bread pudding or sip into dessert with a lavender mule or espresso martini. Kids clamor for the hot fudge brownie sundae or strawberry shortcake.

It’s always a feeding frenzy at RumFish Grill, so make reservations early, especially during the holidays. Looking for a gift that is sure to fit any size or budget? Give the ultimate aquatic experience with a RumFish gift card - the perfect gift for any sea-son. Planning an event or party? RumFish can help you reel in a wonderful time with a special menu hosted in the restaurant, bar, or outdoors. RumFish is more than a restaurant… it’s a sea-worthy experience!

SUSTAINABLE SIPS Eckerd College senior management student Christian Harsha wanted to design and sell reusable on-the-go eating utensils with a novel quick-wash container cup. Utensoul was born and pitched to win by Christian and his international team of college entrepreneurs for a Top Ten spot at the European Innovation Academy (EIA) held in Porto, Portugal, this summer. EIA gathers up to 500 students from around the world annually and asks them to pitch an idea to one another to form teams, refine the idea and then pitch the final product to venture capitalists. Along the way, students are mentored by faculty and professionals, and the top teams receive financial support and professional mentoring for continuing their company toward official launch.

PLANTING TIPS Tampa Bay Water’s board approved $549,030 in 2023 funding for the Florida Friendly Landscaping Program™ (FFL) in Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties this summer, a windfall for sustainable plantings. FFL is a program of the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Services (UF IFAS) and its former namesake, Florida Friendly Yards. FFL promotes wise irrigation practices and proper Florida landscape designs to reduce water use and prevent pollution. In 2021, the program helped save an estimated 62 million gallons of water for the tri-county area through proper irrigation and drought-friendly landscaping. https://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/

WHAT A HOOT Boyd Hill Nature Preserve provides a safe, healthy environment for permanently injured, non-releasable birds of prey (BOP) including owls, hawks, and raptors. These birds are cared for at the preserve as Wild Avian Ambassadors for environmental education programs given by park rangers and Avian Education Stewards (BOP volunteers). As an Avian Education Steward, you can help care for the birds and help educate visitors about their place in nature and what they need to survive in the wild! To volunteer, 727-893-7326. Largo’s McGough Nature Park also hosts a Nature Center, eagle Sarge and a volunteer program.

WILD TALKS In 2023, The Straz presents National Geographic Live series to Ferguson Hall featuring an all-female lineup for the first time. Audiences will experience the world’s wonders through storytelling as they venture through the depths of the ocean, learn about giant pandas in the wild and recover lost stories from Black Wall Street. Featured speakers include marine biologist Diva Amon 1/17, photographer/filmmaker Ami Vitale 2/21 and archeologist Alicia Odewale 5/23. www.strazcenter.org

ASTROLOGY

“Get Sirius About Your Future”

OCTOBER ASTROLOGY

October is an active month in the cosmos with two eclipses and two of the personal planet retrograde cycles changing. Autumn is underway and Mercury will move forward in Virgo on the 2nd and back to Libra on the 10th. This will get communication and transportation matters cleared up and allow us to initiate holiday plans, etc. The Full Hunter’s Moon in action sign Aries on the 9th will reveal where we need to focus this energy. It also aspects planets that promote hard work, organization, and transformation.

The Sun moves on to resourceful Scorpio on the 23rd and is traveling with love and money planet Venus, which joins him later that day. Venus has passionate desires in Scorpio and is not wasteful in finances. This energy combined can be great for finding out where relationships are going and good financial planning. Nothing is done halfway now; it is all or nothing.

A New Moon in Scorpio on the 25th is a Solar Eclipse and begins the next lunar cycle. This powerful influence combined with other planetary aspects promotes new unexpected directions that break old patterns. This creative force can assist in the necessary changes that open new paths. Jupiter revisits Pisces one last time on the 28th where it will finish assisting with the opportunities and growth that it began in this sign earlier this year. It will continue for the next two months bringing its gifts of prosperity and optimism to this sign. Then back to Aries bringing fortune and growth.

Mercury visits investigative Scorpio on the 29th. We want to get to the bottom of things and are skeptical and shrewd. We become set in our opinions and make all-or-nothing decisions now. Communication can be intense and travel can unravel mysteries or have lasting effects on us. Action planet Mars stations REtrograde in Gemini on the 30th and will not move forward until January.

Travel, communication, machinery, and temperament will all be affected. With a difficult aspect to Neptune, all of October may bring uncertainty or confusion in these areas. Meditation, yoga, and relaxing pastimes are favored. Clarity is better in November.

LIBRA: Your personal new year begins now. You are popular, active, and on the go. The full moon highlights relationships; business and personal. The Eclipse opens new paths in finances; income is enhanced or modified.

SCORPIO: Private life is accented and enjoyed all month. The spotlight falls on health issues and the workplace. Resources are used as needed. The Eclipse brings new long-term possibilities for you; with growing pains.

SAGITTARIUS: Social activities and friendships are enjoyed all month. The spotlight falls on romance; recreation. Partners either work with you or want to move on. Private time and wellness are stimulated by the Eclipse.

CAPRICORN: You are favored and shine in your career area. Home and family are in the spotlight. Work and wellness are where the action is. New opportunities come through friends and social connections at month’s end.

AQUARIUS: Travel and education are enjoyed. Conversations and short trips are in the spotlight. Fun, romance and children get your energy. New paths open in your career or status that create changes in your home life.

PISCES: Resources and support from others are enhanced. The spotlight falls on earnings and finances. Home and family issues get your energy. The Eclipse stimulates your desire for travel, education, and exploring.

ARIES: Relationships are enjoyable this month; personal and professional. You are in the full moon spotlight, express yourself and take charge. Later a new cycle begins in your finances; evaluate and make creative changes.

TAURUS: The workplace is pleasant; health may improve. The spotlight reveals hidden issues that need addressing. Monitor spending. Eclipse brings new energy to partnerships and accents relationships with others.

GEMINI: Mars energizes your sign for several months. Recreation and romance are enjoyable. Your social calendar takes center stage. The eclipse highlights wellness, habits, and the workplace with fresh starts.

CANCER: Home life and family time are pleasurable all month. Career and position are in the spotlight; bring balance. Your private world stays active. The eclipse opens new paths with love, creativity, and children.

LEO: You enjoy many short trips, conversations, and being in the moment. Travel is on your mind whether near or far. Social activities bring expenses. Later, Eclipse accents home life and family matters that need addressing.

VIRGO: This month’s attention is on values, earnings, and finances. The full moon illuminates resources from others. Directions for your career may not be clear. Eclipse highlights communication, siblings, and neighbors.

ENCOURAGING WORDS

What Kind of King or Queen Are You?

“ Your real self — the ‘’I Am’’ is master of this land, the ruler of this empire. You rightfully have power and dominion over it, all its inhabitants, and all contained in its realm.” ~ Robert Collier

With the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the media has placed much attention on the monarchy and the making of a King or Queen. Have you ever thought of yourself as royalty? Well, that’s exactly what you are, like it or not! At birth you were appointed the sole (soul) sovereign ruler of your own kingdom. Of course, the kingdom I am talking about is the domain of your own life; your own mind and your own body, which means the only inhabitant of your kingdom is you. You are the master... the ruler of your own empire, and you are the entirety of its citizenry!

This is a delicious dilemma, isn’t it? The question you must ask yourself is; “What kind of ruler am I?” As the ruler, how do you treat the only citizen who lives in your kingdom? With benevolence and kindness, or are you a hard ruler who keeps the citizenry in bondage of some sort? History, mythology, and fairytales are full of stories and metaphor of how different rulers have managed their kingdoms. What we see

at the end of these stories is that the ruler who treats the citizens with thoughtless cruelty, selfishness, disrespect, and hardheartedness often loses his or her kingdom to the acrimony, rancor, and ultimately, rebellion of the inhabitants. Those rulers who treat their subjects with generosity, compassion and kindness have kingdoms that thrive and prosper because the citizens love the ruler, as he or she loves them as well. Herein lies the lesson for each of us.

Is there any rebellion brewing in your kingdom? If you were to take an introspective look at how you, as the ruler, are treating yourself as a citizen of your own kingdom, what would you find? It’s easy to determine if the citizenry in your kingdom is preparing a rebellion or not—just take a glance at your life. How peaceful is it? Walk down the streets of your own mind and examine what is going on. Is it safe there? Is there any inner conflict, angst, resentment, disagreement, self-judgment,

or discontentment there? Now, do the same with your physical body; does it feel more like it’s in a war zone, or at a meditation retreat?

You can even extend this analysis to the body of your relationships with others. Are your neighboring kingdoms at war with yours, or is there peace throughout the land?

Well, how does your kingdom measure up? What kind of ruler are you? If you discover there may be a rebellion brewing, it’s never too late to become a different ruler. What would it take to treat yourself with more respect and loving-kindness? How would it feel for you to issue clemency and forgiveness to yourself for whatever mistakes you have made in the past? How would it feel to know that you remain safe and provided for by using your own innate wisdom to create wholeness in your life? How would it feel to extend these same considerations to the relationships in your life as well? How would a benevolent ruler who was absolutely comfortable with his or her own authentic power and never intimidated or threatened by external power treat the subjects of his or her domain? With equanimity, love, respect, and appreciation, that’s how.

Can you now see that you really are royalty? Of course, the real reason you possess such great and awesome power is that, just like any other king or queen, you were born into it. You didn’t have to earn it—you inherited it! Because of this, and as a living manifestation of the Infinite, there is no person on the planet with more power than you. Your real Self, the ‘I Am,’ is the ruler of this empire! So, the question is, now that you know you are the sovereign ruler of your own kingdom, how will you manage that power? Choose wisely, because the inhabitant of your kingdom deserves the best, yes? Choose to treat yourself with love and respect and you shall live happily ever after. And, thus the saying, “Long live the King (or Queen).”
