The secret is out. The cat is out of the bag, as they say. St. Pete Beach is the #1 Beach in the U.S. for 2021, according to Trip Advisor users, saying it was a great spot for watching sunsets and small group sailing. It’s not that we were keeping it a secret,

what with naming St. Pete Beach the Sunset Capital of Florida a few years back. Good idea, Renee Roos. Our neighbor to the north, Madeira Beach, was also in the Top 10. That is all we needed. On top of four winning sports teams we have two Top10 Beaches. Wow.

The Centre-St. Pete Beach By Michael Moses The Centre of St. Pete Beach is a cannabis centric wellness center and a retail store. It focuses on cannabis education and community involvement. The Centre comprises of a yoga and meditation studio, medicinal marijuana doctor’s office, kitchen, and co-working space. We are also excited to soon welcome kū’bå, the beach’s newest restaurant, located inside The Centre, with its own walk-up, pick-up window and outdoor dining area on 76th Ave. Parking is available in the Walgreen’s lot and on the north side of The Centre. Kū’bå will be open for business in early spring. As in-person gatherings are permitted, we are also becoming the beach’s newest dynamic event venue. One of The Centre’s primary missions is to reduce anxiety, something many of us are dealing with after a year of COVID-19. They say stress is one of the greatest contributors to disease that shortens life spans and makes life far more challenging. The Centre is where you can be assured the procurement of the finest CBD for you, your loved ones, and pets. Not all CBD is created equal. We carry patented and heavily tested Impirica, MüV, and Nature’s Pet Herbal branded CBD products. We stand by the efficacy of our premium products. What’s new in the Cannabis Industry? There is a new over-the-counter product line called Delta 8 THC now available at The Centre. This newly developed “legal form of THC” treats a variety of ailments that would normally be treated with the highly controlled Delta 9 THC labled medical marijuana. Users report a clearer-headed and milder psychoactive effect compared to ordinary THC. Delta 8 THC is a Cannabanoid that is only one chemical compound away from Delta 9 THC. It DOES NOT require a state license or membership to purchase. Our staff will be happy to share their knowledge with

The US formally rejoined the Paris Agreement, just over four years after Donald Trump declared his intention to abandon it. “It’s an important first step,” writes Sierra Club executive director Michael Brune. “But to meet the agreement’s goal of preventing climate catastrophe, the Biden administration will have to take ambitious climate action here at home, and inspire and enable other countries to do the same.” How to start? kick off February 2021. About half of PSTA’s fleet is now electric or hybrid.

PSTA hopes to eliminate all diesel buses from its fleet within the next decade. I remember when we had to demonstrate to get the board to even consider electric instead of diesel. Their six battery-powered electric buses produce zero emissions. Each electric bus is powered by a rechargeable, environmentally-friendly battery averaging 180 miles or about 14 hours of operating time on a single charge. PSTA will save about $20,000 a year in diesel fuel costs with each electric bus, $240,000/bus over 12 years. ST. PROPERTY LAW

Travels through Property Law by Tom Brodersen, Esq.

So, Just What’s In that Listing Contract? Many sophisticated people hire attorneys to review both listing contracts and purchase and sale agreements before they sign them (and often prefer to have attorneys close the transaction as well). Other people seem perfectly comfortable signing these multipage documents without even reading them through themselves! They are often told they are “standard” agreements and seem to assume that they are therefore “safe.” First of all, there is no such thing as a truly “standard” contract for real estate sales or, especially, listings. Although the Florida Association of Realtors® (now known simply as “Florida Realtors® ”) have their own basic forms, many brokerage companies write their own contracts, with considerable “creative drafting.” Real estate lawyers always warn that there are many problems that can’t be fully remedied after the agreements have been executed. So, starting with listing contracts, just what is in those agreements that can come back and hurt the owner?

12

MARCH 2021 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

A listing is a service contract between a property owner and a real estate broker by which that firm is engaged to give their best efforts to find a buyer ready, willing and able to purchase a property on the terms offered (or other terms the seller may ultimately accept). Most problems in listing agreements are in four different areas: 1. Many listings provide for binding arbitration in the case of a disagreement between you and your broker. The problem with arbitration is the concern that they may

favor the businesses that hire them. In addition, if you disagree with the arbitrator’s ruling, there is no appeal. 2. Listing contracts often include language that would, under certain circumstances, leave you liable to a pay full commission even if there is no closing. Most sellers would never expect such an outcome. 3. In the event that the seller changes his mind about selling, or just doesn’t think the broker is doing an adequate job, there are often very tough conditions attached to cancellation, again a situation that most sellers would not expect. 4. Some listing agreements also provide that the broker can transfer the listing to another broker should they desire. It seems to me like they should ask you, the seller, for permission if they want to do that. In reviewing listing contracts, I normally strike those terms, or at least negotiate a more acceptable form of them. C it y A p p rova l E x pec te d S o o n fo r ‘STPETE2050’ Visioning Initiative Story by STEVE TRAIMAN Images courtesy of City of St. Petersburg

The ambitious, forward-looking StPete2050

visioning initiative is expected to be presented to the full

City Council at an upcoming March 18 or April 1 meeting as a Report Item on the agenda.

StPete2050 builds upon the city’s rich planning history, dating nearly 100 years ago to 1923 when the country’s preeminent planner, John Nolen, was retained to develop a city plan. Nolen was an advocate for designing with nature and his plans reinforced the importance of parks, civic buildings and wide boulevards. He completed St. Petersburg Today, St. Petersburg Tomorrow, Florida’s first comprehensive city plan. It called for integrating development with natural features and landscapes. The forward-looking plan was opposed by the Evening Independent newspaper and developers and was never adopted. Many of St. Pete’s character-defining features derive from his early planning efforts. Jump forward 20 years to 1943 when the Bartholomew Plan is adopted, following an era of municipal debt from the Great Depression. The plan assumed a future population that would stabilize at 120,000 in 1960 (by 1960 the actual population exceeded 180,000). Rampant growth and water resource issues led to building moratoriums and the adoption of the 1974 conceptual plan. It incorporated a number of planning principles from the Nolen plan. In 1975 a state planning act passed and St. Pete subsequently adopted the 1977 Land Use Plan. In 1989, in accord with the requirements of the state’s 1985 Local Government Comprehensive Planning Act the city adopted its Growth Management Plan. In 2002, St. Pete adopted Vision 2020, setting the stage for comprehensive plan and land development regulation updates. StPete2050 also builds upon and will replace the prior visioning process that led to the Vision 2020 Plan.

ENTHUSIASTIC KICKOFF Mayor Rick Kriseman told Paradise News earlier (February 2021 issue), “In 2019, the city embarked upon StPete2050. It’s a planning and ‘visioning’ process organized around 10 priority community themes. City council is expected to adopt the plan in early 2021. While commenting on the planning process is not the most exciting form of civic engagement, doing so is vitally important to future city historic preservation efforts.” About 300 people used markers, maps, labels and their imaginations to begin creating a vision for what St. Petersburg will be like 30 years from now. The packed house at the James Museum Nov. 8, 2019, was the inaugural public meeting, and the start of a year-long process, for StPete2050, a citywide conversation about the future of St. Petersburg. “This is a generational opportunity,” Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin said. “It’s your opportunity to chart our city’s course, to think about things like sustainability, health and wellness, energy, mobility, housing, education, equity, diversity, our community’s character, what will make sure we will always be a values-driven city, and our economy. It’s all up for discussion.” “The city followed a similar process two decades ago, when it created Vision 2020,” said Elizabeth Abernethy, planning and development services director. “There have been a lot of changes since 2020, including about an 8 percent gain in population, an increase in household income, a drop in the poverty rate, and new home construction citywide, including double the number of homes downtown. There also are challenges that weren’t top of mind 20 years ago, such as attainable housing, sustainability and resiliency, aging infrastructure and community health.” “Unlike Vision 2020, there are no designated steering committee leaders for the current planning process,” Tomalin continued. “Each of you is steering. Each of you has your hands on the wheel.” 14

MARCH 2021 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

At the meeting there were 30 tables with 10 chairs each. Groups at each table were encouraged to talk about what they saw as the city’s strengths and opportunities, and to use the markers, labels and maps at each table to document their conversations. This enthusiastic launch was followed by three community surveys, with local residents and business people encouraged to respond with their thoughts and ideas for the StPete2050 initiative. At press time, city staff was working diligently on edits to the 2050 report to respond to feedback received from the surveys and the Jan. 28 City Council meeting.

DIRECTOR ABERNETHY NOTES Elizabeth Abernethy, city director of planning and development service, told Paradise News, “My team is responsible for the final edit that is the result of comments at the Jan. 28 council meeting. It is mainly focused on clarifying language with no real substantive changes and will also include results from the most recent community survey. “We’re anxious and excited to move forward with our Planning Department’s next step that is to update the city’s Comprehensive Plan from the Vision 2020 initiative. We’ll also be updating the Land Development Codes based on last year’s feedback. “We’ll begin a series of community workshops starting this spring focused on the 10 community themes used to coordinate and guide development in appropriate areas of the city. This is in preparation to coming back to City Council on July 29 with updates to the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Codes. “Those community themes included Arts and Culture; Shared Economic Prosperity; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Sustainability and Resilience; Education; Transportation and

Mobility; Growth and Community; Character; Attainable Housing; Healthy Communities; Parks, Recreation, and Open Space. Although not identified as a theme, historic preservation is one of the goals within the theme, ‘growth and community character’. “Community outreach, much broader than that for our Vision 2020 process, had almost 8,000 points of contact. Included were 45 events, including non-traditional outreach sites that reached 2,870 residents; 635 unique emails with 486 comments on the StPete2050.com web page; over 4,000 responses to three online surveys; and 450 attendees at six meetings for two Community Workshop Series. Meetings included city officials’ introductions, Data presentations and table-topic exercises and online survey access and comment cards.” Included in the comments were local area kids’ images and creative outlook for their visions of their city in 2050 (see examples in article). Abernethy emphasized, “This project is one of the key reasons I wanted to work for my city where we’ve lived for 30 years and brought up our family. I joined the city six years ago and became City Planner two years ago. It’s very exciting and an honor to do something like this, and we’re very excited to move to this next step. It will be presented to City Council at an upcoming meeting very soon.”

STRONG COMMUNITY SUPPORT The StPete2050 initiative has strong support from Preserve the Burg (PTB) from both Peter Belmont, a founding member and recent past president, and Jeff Schorr, owner of Craftsman House Gallery & Café, and a long-time PTB activist; Rui Farias, executive director of the St. Petersburg Museum of History; The James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art; and many other local organizations. PTB’s Schorr said earlier (February 2021 issue), “As Mayor Kriseman noted, in 2019 PTB received grant funding from

the 1972 Foundation to start a historic preservation revolving fund. The city of St. Petersburg matched the grant, and the PTB Historic Properties Program was born. A revolving fund is an active real estate-based program for protecting endangered properties using techniques such as: options, purchase/resale, easements and tax credits. These historic structures ultimately are returned to the private sector with deed restrictions in place. “Another keystone of PTB is the Neighborhoods Program, also strongly supported by the city. The unique character of St. Petersburg’s historic neighborhoods is threatened by rampant demolition and the construction of new homes out of scale with their surroundings. Preserve the ‘Burg works with neighborhood residents and associations on solutions that maintain the historic character of our neighborhoods, including the creation of local historic districts, which discourage unnecessary demolitions and encourage the compatible new construction.” Summing up, Mayor Rick Kriseman told Paradise News, “First, I want to thank our city team that has dedicated much of their time to StPete2050, and the future of Florida’s best city. “StPete2050 not only helps us make informed decisions about the future of the Sunshine City today but will help the leaders of tomorrow. StPete2050 will guide programming and services throughout the city and in support of its sustainable, resilient, and equitable growth for the next 30 years. This citywide conversation about our future and the resulting vision plan will continue to honor our rich history.” [Editor’s Note: Special thanks to St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman and City Planner Elizabeth Abernethy for their excellent comments and images.] [Steve Traiman is president of Creative Copy by Steve Traiman, St. Pete Beach, providing business writing services at traimancreativecopy@gmail.com or by phone to 727-363-7531.]

Salty Water Tours Offers Eco Adventures by Peter Roos

Getting out on the water is a kind of therapy all by itself. Interacting with our myriad of seabirds and dolphins adds yet another dimension. Salty Water Tours offers private eco adventures with a variety of options for two to six guests. It is a perfect way for you or your family to experience Florida’s most memorable moments, whether you are residents or visitors. Cameras are recommended. Pets are welcome too. Captain Rob White has more than 20 years of experience. His partner and tour guide, Emily Siebert, is in the Coastguard Auxiliary, has been an environmentalist for decades and is a yoga instructor. She is also working on completing her captain’s license. Both keep up with facts about area water birds and mammals like dolphins, turtles and tortoises so they can share their knowledge with guests in take-away nuggets. “We’ve been to the Dolphin Research Center in Marathon,” said White. “We want our customers to leave saying, ‘I never knew that.’ That’s why we put a second person on board to provide environmental and eco-friendly education during each tour.” They also help area rescue groups with birds like pelicans. “A lot of our customers want to know how they can help with rescues,” said White. “People often take out 10 or 20 bucks and say, ‘Can you donate this to help the birds?’ We love that.” Currently, four competitively priced tours are offered for private groups ranging in size from two to six guests. The two-hour Sea Hare is a combination of dolphin watching and shelling in shallow water near Shell Key; the one-and-a-half-hour Dolphin Fun emphasizes wildlife viewing from the boat; the four-hour Island gives people a choice of visiting two area islands–Egmont, Shell or Passage; and the one-and-a-half-hour Dolphin Sunset tour is perfect to take in the sunset. Custom tours and combinations are possible. Repeat clients are treasured. Siebert also offers yoga experiences, on request. Their 26-foot catamaran “Sea Hare” assures a “smooth, quiet ride as it cuts through the waves,” said White. “The low gunnels or sides means it’s also easier to view dolphins that come right up to the sides of the boat then turn on their sides so they can see us. It’s incredible.” The fun begins at the Gulfport Marina, close to where the dolphins play. Visit www.SaltyWaterTours.com or call 727-401-2774. ParadiseNewsFL.com | MARCH 2021

SACINO Says “Business is Picking UP” By Peter Roos We have known Ron Sacino and his wife Sherry as friends and St. Pete Beach neighbors for decades. I think we first met at one of the late Frank Hurley’s famous holiday parties. As CEO of Sacino’s Formalwear and Dry Cleaning, Ron is the undisputed tuxedo king of Tampa Bay. Sacino’s is a family company that started as a modest tailor shop in Fitchburg, Massachusetts in 1916. Ron and his brother, Greg, played no small part in growing the family menswear empire with the strongest possible emphasis on customer satisfaction. Reviews online all remark about that. Ron is ready to surrender his ‘tuxedo king’ crown, which he says has tarnished under the Covid-19 pandemic. “If you think about impacts of the pandemic on businesses, it is difficult to find one more

impacted than the formal wear industry,” Sacino told Paradise NEWS. “To be perfectly honest, there was a trend toward more casual events in Florida even before COVID. Fortunately we have also been in the dry cleaning and laundry business for decades. That is the business that is growing now.” Their ultimate goal is to continue to live up to Sacino’s reputation of exceptional, one-on-one customer service and satisfaction. We not only offer dry cleaning and wash, dry and fold laundry service, we now repair and polish your shoes and handbags, do clothing alterations and clean your better throw rugs and carpets! We have expanded our personal services to meet our customer’s needs in today’s marketplace!

Everywhere Paradise NEWS goes is a great market for us,” Ron continued. We are in every neighborhood twice a week! What we pick up one day we deliver the next.” Readers can call 727-471-0573 or sign up on the Sacino website, www.SacinosCleaners.com. They will be contacted for their preferences and they will get a couple of personalized laundry bags. “I can promise you that any new customers Paradise NEWS sends our way will truly be appreciated and will have the best laundry experience of their lives. Not only that, we will always provide FREE pick-up from and delivery to your home or office, AND we’ll give you 50% OFF on your entire first order, so feel free to load us up,” said Ron in closing. Visit www.SacinosCleaners.com to sign up online or call 727-471-0573 to learn why their business is picking up. ParadiseNewsFL.com | MARCH 2021

DINING

The Earl

of SANDWICH

In spring, I swoon over outdoor dining and picnics. In Paradise, you can grab a sandwich and eat on the beach, on the boat or on your patio. In the U.S. we consume 300 million sandwiches daily and in 2021, we’re looking to save time, money and discover new sandwiches customized to our whims. Grab & Go is today’s hot trend. Datz Pastrami Sandwich

What’s between the bread or the wrap? Global-inspired sandwiches (beyond the banh’ mi, burrito, calzone and gyros), mayo mixes (with spicy mustard, garlic or siracha) and handcrafted ketchups, vegan medleys, gourmet meats and cheeses (best melted), artisan relishes, bacon/ranch, southwestern/zesty Baja sauces, pulled pork and barbecue flavors are trending.

Big Jim’s Steakhouse: Known for their Philly Cheesesteak and oversized portions and generous sides, you can’t go wrong with the Beef on Weck, the Corned Beef/Pastrami special with Thousand Island or the Beef Brisket sandwich. Largo/Seminole Blvd. City’s Bistro: Order here for a meeting or party. We can’t get enough of the assorted platter of blackened chicken & cheddar, chicken Caesar, cheddar & avocado, grilled chicken & bacon, hummus & red pepper pesto, honey ham & Swiss, and turkey & avocado halved wraps. DTSP Chill Restaurant & Bar: In addition to a fab brunch and live music, handheld delights include a chicken sandwich topped with bacon and Swiss, grouper with a side of remoulade or the blackened chicken avocado wrap. St. Pete Beach

With the pandemic, eating al fresco seems sensible so we are devoting this restaurant story to the best sandwiches from downtown St. Pete to the beaches. Best served with a pickle and housemade chips, please. Our cover is devoted to St. Pete Beach’s Fo’Cheezy Twisted Melt, the ultimate melted sammie decadence and out-of-this-world hand-spun shakes.

Datz St. Pete: Bacon, wacky cocktails/mocktails, awesome sides and eclectic handhelds such as Death Wish (spicy buffalo tenders, tobacco onions, Sriracha® drizzle, blue cheese), Memphis on My Mind (pulled pork, power slaw, BBQ sauce, tobacco onions, white cheddar and April in Paris vegetarian (melted brie, tomato, arugula, basil pesto). DTSP

Best Cuban Sandwiches: Our top three faves are Bodega on Central (DTSP), Pipo’s and Havana Harry’s on this side of the bridge. Alesia Restaurant: Excellent banh mi, a Parisian hot dog with caramelized onions, gruyère and mornay sauce served on French baguette and a traditional Croque Monsieur (jambon, gruyère, portobello mushroom, mornay sauce) and a savory chicken salad. St. Petersburg

Foxy’s: My go-to for comfort sandwiches, especially the chicken tender/bacon/avocado, portabella mushroom (American, Swiss, garlic mayo), hot roast beef with curly fries, avocado shrimp club and Sloppy Joe. Treasure Island

By Nanette Wiser Joey Brooklyn’s Famous Pizza Kitchen: Chow down on chicken parm, Italian sausage, meatball, traditional Italian grinder and chicken Caesar sandwiches Big Apple Style. DTSP Lonny’s Sandwiches: The “Famous Sunny Bird” is an inspired creation of cream cheese, turkey, sunflower seeds, sprouts and homemade honey French dressing on wild rice bread, and we love the tropical chicken salad with mango, pineapple walnuts and celery. DTSP Odi’s Mediterranean Kitchen: Yell opa for the veggie pitas (roasted eggplant, hummus, peppers; grilled veggies), chicken souvlaki or gyro on a pita, super subs (Greek roast beef with feta, chicken salad) and falafel wraps. St. Pete Beach O’Maddy’s: Rock out with live music, bay view and creative concoctions including the lobster BLT, shrimp wrap, Big John rare roast beef with cole slaw and beer cheese sauce and a delicious mahi Reuben on marble rye. Pom Pom’s Teahouse & Sandwicheria: Adorable décor, housemade teas and incredible desserts, but the stars of the show are the eclectic sandwiches. We love the lemon zesty tuna melt, Spicy Elvis (banana, bacon, strawberry jelly, cayenne peanut butter) Thanksgiving turkey and gouda sandwich (ginger cranberry chutney, cream cheese, mashed potatos) and the Danny (brie, almonds, apples, red onions and cranberry chutney). DTSP Quaker Steak N Lube: BBQ O-Ring Cheese steak is made with thinly shaved sirloin sautéed with smoky barbecue sauce, breaded onion rings and cheddar-jack cheese. Pinellas Park Salty’s Sandwich Bar: Boar’s Head meats make the Monte Cristo served with a mango chutney, the fried bologna sandwich, turkey or pastrami Reuben and tuna melt on marble rye. Gulfport Shrimpy’s Blues Bistro: Cajun and seafood menu features delish po’ boys, Bourbon Street fried cod, blackened corvina, pressed American (bacon, sweet ham, Swiss cheese) and even Mexican fare. Order hush puppies, y’hear? St. Pete Beach The Wharf Seafood Restaurant: From the corned beef Reuben on marble rye and secret sauce to the po-boys (shrimp/oyster, grouper, blackened chicken), soft-shell crab sandwich and Maine lobster roll, this is a locals’ fave. Pass-A-Grille Two Dads: Chef Wade Parrish’s new take-out restaurant serves up his signature style I loved at O’Maddy’s with a Shrimp and Crab Roll served with Old Bay potato straws and a Roasted Beef Strip Loin Sammich served one of four ways: Horseradish cream/ salt & pepper; Philly style w/ cooked onions/ cheese sauce/ Giardiniera; Boursin/ arugula/ pickled red onion or open face with brown gravy/crispy onion. That was the thought process Chefs

Robert Hesse and Craig Munroe had when they launched Fo’Cheezy Twisted Meltz last March. And believe this, they have taken America’s ultimate comfort food to a whole new level. Last March, we spoke with co-founder Craig Munroe to discuss an introductory cover story in our April 2020 edition, and he explained their plan to release this amazing new concept to the world. He told us that they were starting with a state-of-the-art food truck 22

MARCH 2021 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

that was already booked for over $500,000 in business for 2020 doing festivals and onsite lunches at car dealerships. They also acquired and were beginning a complete remodel of the old “Fetishes” building at 6305 Gulf Boulevard for their first brick and mortar location. They planned to be great corporate citizens, starting a foundation for underprivileged children called “No Kid 86’d”. Then the pandemic hit! It seemed that if they had tried to find a worse time to start their business, they just could not have. Chef Robert Hesse and Craig Munroe have both

faced ridiculous odds alone before and come out ok, so they felt they could surely do it together. They were right too! Looking back, from our vantage point a year later, they have much to be proud of. Everything has happened as they predicted it would, just a bit later. The Fo’Cheezy Twisted Meltz food truck sat in front of Mastry’s Brewery for months after it appeared in Paradise NEWS, delivering food to our readers, even while other restaurants were shut down. They also took the initiative during the beginning of the Pandemic to take

care of everyone the best way they knew how, by handing out free Meltz every Friday. Initially they invited all out of work hospitality employees and local musicians, two industries crushed by the pandemic, to come down and get dinner on them. Soon after, they decided to open it up to anyone in need. “We felt it was our duty to give back to the people whose livelihoods were severely impacted.” said Craig. When the brick and mortar store opened in August of 2020, it was off to the races. “We’ve made a profit every month, even after giving 2% of gross sales to our “No Kid 86’d Foundation” said Craig, although December was “touch-and-go until Christmas week.” This year, for the Super Bowl, there was a food truck “food court” set up for fans for 7 days prior to the game, and “we had a waiting line 12-hours-a-day for a week straight,” said Robert. “It was actually our first major event on the truck because everything else we had

booked last year was cancelled. Our staff killed it and the week was a huge success.” Craig explained.

The location is open weekdays from 11am-11pm and weekends 11am-3am.

“Our goal is simply to create true Chef inspired comfort food… to bring homecooked classics to life in an all-new way… as an experience, not just a meal” says Chef Robert Hesse. “Creating these experiences requires attention to detail and the highest level of care. The creations at FO’CHEEZY TWISTED MELTZ are crafted using only the highest quality of ingredients. While many tend to follow the latest trends, FO’CHEEZY strives to set the trends with these innovative, one-of-a-kind MELTZ. From street to table, it all comes together from real people N’ real chefs who care. So come experience Craft Food in a truly unique mobile form!”

They also shared with us some big news that they are already working on their second brick and mortar location, opening soon in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg. Keep an eye on their website www.FOCHEEZY.com or social media #FOCHEEZY for dates and times of special grand opening events.

If you love it, you can become a “Melt Mob Black Card Member” for a one-time $50 payment and get discounts and BOGO deals everyday. And 25% goes to the kids. JUST SAY HOOK ME UP WITH THE MELT MOB! Call 727-827-7677 to order NOW! Ask about curbside pick-up or delivery.

What’s up for 2021? “We just launched an expanded menu, added two new sandwiches, Parmageddon and What’s Beef, and also added “Wangz” to the menu.” Robert told us, “We have multiple original sauces but we’re super proud to offer the 10k PB&J Wangz because those are the ones I used to beat Bobby Flay!”

Herbaceous Cocktails: From lavender-infused tequila margaritas to tarragon syrup tequila cocktails, herbs are blooming in mixologists’ recipes. To make tarragon syrup, simply blanch 1½ oz. of tarragon leaves (no stems) for 15 seconds in boiling water, then transfer the leaves to an ice bath. In a blender, combine the leaves with 2 cups of simple syrup and blend until smooth. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 month. Coffee Cocktails: If you love an espresso martini, you’ll enjoy cold brew-inspired cocktails such as an Espresso MarTIKI (dark rum, Mr. Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur, espresso shot, pineapple juice and orgeat syrup) or cold brew coffee with cognac, amaro, and ginger syrup. Experiment with different cold brews (we love Bandit and Kahwa) and coffee liqueurs (Tia Maria, Kahlua) in your cocktail, especially St. George Nola Coffee Liqueur and Patron XO café. Craft Gins: Remember when beer was just beer? Just like the introduction of craft bourbons, gin is busting out in international flavors. Just discovered Brooklyn Halftone Spirits, featuring Halftone Gin (hawthorn berry, sumac, pink peppercorn, almond), Wavelength, a naturally colored pink gin with rose hip and lemon verbena and Modular, a Japanese-style gin with yuzu, genmaicha green tea, Szechuan peppercorns, and black sesame seed. Easter Brunch: From Italy with love, Prosecco Rose from $12-$22 arrives in the U.S. just in time for Easter. From dry to light sweetness, sip the Mionetto or LaMarca bubbly with your eggs and chocolate bunnies. Florida Wines: According to Wine Enthusiast Magazine, Florida is cultivating a love affair with the indigenous muscadine grape to produce reds, whites and roses with medium to full body that are meant to be consumed immediately rather than aged. Also perfect for spring spritzes are wines made from kiwi and mango. Coconut Dreams: Pina Coladas have gotten sophisticated. We especially like this Sherry Colada, especially with Sunday brunch. In a cocktail shaker, combine 2 ounces amontillado sherry, 1 ounce pineapple juice, 1 ounce coconut cream and 3/4 ounce lemon juice; add ice and shake until chilled. Pour into a highball glass, add crushed ice and garnish with a pineapple wedge and a dash of Angostura bitters.

Local products & cookbooks spice up spring flings If you’re visiting, there’s nothing better than bringing a taste of Paradise home (key lime patties, gummy sharks or alligator-shaped chocolates). For locals, living in Paradise is about cooking with homegrown products, spices, farm-fresh produce and beverages. Whether it’s happy hour, supper or a small backyard party (Easter/St. Patrick’s Day), spice up your menu with these locally-made faves. At Saturday Market, we stock up on Augustine Cheesecakes, Breadwinners’ Bakery, organic Cosmicki Cookies, Hale-Life Gluten/Vegan Bakery and Southern Bay Bakery. Match your wine and cheese with Gulf Coast Sourdough and The Bread Artisans. Nosh on Brooklyn Knish (bacon, potato) and Petite France’s crepes at Sat. Market. Look for Clara Rose’s Ice Cream Truck around town and be sure to stock up on famed William Dean’s Chocolates, especially their Easter collection. Bring home local food truck fare from Twisted Indian Fusion, the St. Pete Taco Lady, Flip’n Tasty Filipino Food Truck, Hoke Poke Food Truck, Latin Lunch Box, Three Generations Food Truck, Sunkissed Food Truck and Foodie Labs. Thanks to Door Dash and Uber Eats, your favorite local restaurant dish can be tonight’s dinner. We like the briny Florida Pure Sea Salt Pure sea salt at the Sat. market. Teas/Coffees: On 9th, we love Blush Tea + Coffee’s aromatic mixes, especially the red chai. Check out their Spring Fling Sunday 3/21 from 9-2 showcasing local makers and artist, coffee, tea, food and live music including Nightshift Wax Co. Wild Roots Daisy and Honey Studios. LOCAL COOKBOOKS Cooking local is easy with the help of these Tampa Bay beauties such as “Columbia Restaurant Spanish Cookbook”, celebrated author Joyce LaFray’s “Key Lime Cookbook”, former TBT Food editor Janet Keeler’s “Cookielicious”, the Junior League of Tampa’s “Gasparilla Cookbook” and “Mazzaro’s Family Cookbook”. Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin collected healthy recipes from local restaurants and shared a few of her own in “St. Pete Eats: A Cookbook”. The Chef’s Hat Culinary Entertainment owner and celebrity Chef Ivan Jeanblanc serves up 52 weeks of recipes to explore in “A Year of Brunches”. With a home in St. Pete and Chicago, Chef Ivan puts the fun back in food, teaching cooking classes and catering events. After-hours classes (kitchen skills, cooking prep, date night, brunch) for two or a small group will be back on the menu soon. Chef Ivan is the new owner of Savory Spice Shop in downtown St. Pete where you can also buy his book (and online), delectable global spices and salts as well as local artisan pasta, A Bee’s Place honey and Intensity Academy’s specialty sauces (Goodness Garlic, Must Thai, Saucy Everything). Ask him about what wines best pair with spices! I made his Mexican Scrambled Eggs with Chorizo for Valentine’s Day and plan to serve his Grouper Eggs Benedict or Salmon with Poached Eggs and Asparagus for Easter brunch. www.achefhat.com

LOBSTER & CRAB CAKE BENEDICT INGREDIENTS: • 1-1½ lb fresh lobster • 6 purchased crab cakes or freshly made from recipe that follows • 6 poached eggs • 1 cup hollandaise sauce • 1 tbsp hot sauce (Tabasco or another brand) • 1 tbsp smoked paprika • 4oz lump crabmeat INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Make the crab cakes (unless you are using purchased ones). 2. Fill a large pot with water to point capable of holding the fresh lobster submerged. 3. Bring the pot of water to a boil, then submerge the live lobster. 4. Boil the lobster for 10 to 12 minutes until it has turned to a bright red color. 5. Remove the lobster and let cool until you can crack the claws and tail. Chop into 1/2 inch pieces. Keep warm. 6. Make the hollandaise sauce. Melt butter in a small saucepan and let cool, then remove the white milk solids from the butter with a spoon. 7. In a large saucepan, add 2 inches of water and bring to a simmer. 8. Add egg yolks, 1/2 tbsp salt and lemon juice to a metal mixing bowl and place over the saucepan with water. Whisk vigorously until it peaks (two to five minutes). Remove from heat. 9. Slowly whisk butter into egg yolk mixture until smooth and slightly thickened. 10. Heat the crab cakes in the microwave until hot and place two on a serving plate. Drizzle the crab cakes with the hot sauce. Place lobster pieces on the crab cake halves, cover with the poached egg and hollandaise sauce. Place small amount of crab on top of the eggs. Garnish with smoked paprika. CRAB CAKES FROM SCRATCH INGREDIENTS: 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1 large egg, beaten 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1/2 tsp hot sauce 1/2 lb jumbo lump crabmeat, picked over 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs 1/4 cup canola oil 1 lemon, juiced INSTRUCTIONS: 1. In a small bowl, whisk the mayonnaise with the egg, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce until smooth. 2. In a medium bowl, combine the crabmeat with the panko. Mix in the mayonnaise mixture. Cover and refrigerate until chilled. 3. Form the crab mixture into eight patties, about 1½ inches thick. In a large skillet, heat the oil to medium high. Add the crab cakes and cook over moderately high heat until deeply golden and heated through, about three minutes per side. Drizzle with fresh lemon juice. ParadiseNewsFL.com | MARCH 2021

Music

&

Nightlife

I love discovering quirky bands and venues, especially bands playing outdoors. At Trader Joe’s, I grooved to a guitar player sitting on the sidewalk near the parking lot. You can see how desperate I’ve been to see live music reappear with safety protocols and social distancing. Let the music move you at these locations; check Facebook for times (they can change), prices and other details.

If you’re an ‘80s girl in a brave new world, you will love The Spazmatics Florida, an eclectic 80s tribute band that sports all the eighties style, from horn-rimmed glasses to skinny ties. Mesmerized by their moves, you can catch the magic at Ringside (3/19), Ka’Tiki (3/26) and sometimes at 3 Daughters Brewing. March 19 March 26

Ringside Café downtown St. Pete Ka’Tiki Sunset Beach

By Nanette Wiser

Hide’s famed mixologist Niall McCourt is the beverage director, so expect retro-hip drinks. With 200 seats in the 800-capacity space, concerts will resume when the pandemic ebbs and expect more live-stream shows till then. Missing all the outdoors concerts, from Clearwater’s Sea Blues, but excited to picnic at Horan Park for the St. Pete Beach Spring Concert Series (3/19 Doobie Brothers, Santana tribute bands; 4/16 and 5/7) as well as the return of the Music in the Afternoon 3/28 with Lew Barrows & The Rhythm Kings. Hoping the Reggae Rise-Up Festival will happen March 18-21 this year in Vinoy Park DTSP with Matisyahu, Dirty Heads and Iration headlining on Sunday, three of my faves.

The Florida Social Club on Central Avenue is slowly opening, showcasing the restoration and transformation of the former State Theater. With the promise of a lounge menu and cocktail list, March kicks off with Gloria West & The Gents, The Black Honkeys with more local music coming. Mandarin

At DTSP St. Pete Side Lot 3/12, rock out with Core – A Stone Temple Pilots tribute band with the best 90’s alternative music. The Petty Experience @ Caddy’s Treasure Island 3/20 will be a spring fling featuring the music of Petty and The Wilburys. On my birthday 3/25, you’ll find me at Sunset Beach’s Ka’Tiki sipping a mai tai with the Cozmic Cowboyz (Jim Hamlin on lead vocals, acoustic and electric guitar and L.A. on (3-D) harmonica and vocals). Jannus Live’s monthly Grateful Dead tribute legend Uncle John’s Band performs 3/25. Slip into the nautical Galley downtown 3/27 for the talented Chris Powers, awesome eats and serious libations. And there’s always live music Friday-Saturday at Clearwater’s 49th Street Big Storm Brewery and 3 Daughters Brewing (DTSP). 30

DINY’s Jewelers – Jewelry Makeover by Peter Roos Event - April 10, 10am-4pm We first introduced Beverly J. Diny to Paradise NEWS readers in the spring of 2016. Diny’s Jewelers has been successful for over 38 years. Four years ago, Beverly acted on her dream to open a shop on our beautiful beaches. Beverly has already made quite a number of long-lasting friends in town that she considers like family. She is considered a highly trained and respected jeweler that enjoys people and life. Bev is also a diamond expert who travels to Antwerp, Belgium, to buy diamonds directly for stock; she takes personal orders. Beverly is dedicated to continuous satisfaction with every individual experience. Her talents are many, but her favorite talent is refurbishing old jewelry that just sits in a jewelry box for her clients. “Women are bringing me jewelry that was in their families and asking me to turn their beloved piece into a more modern design, by recycling these older gems and precious metals,” said Beverly. “With 38 years of experience in the industry, they can help to restore, redesign and repurpose items that have sentimental value. She has a special event scheduled for April 10th from 10am until 4pm with four highly trained jewelry redesign experts in-house. Jewelry connoisseurs are especially welcome to this event. She offers in-house financing with deferred interest.

COLONOSCOPY Is Not a Dirty Word As COVID-19 has gripped the country, colorectal cancer screenings have dropped dramatically. This is a dangerous trend. March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and prevention is the key to treating and beating colon cancer. Overall, the most effective way to reduce your risk of colorectal cancer is to get screened regularly, beginning at age 50. More than 90% of colorectal cancers occur in people 50 years old or older. If you’re younger than 50 but have an increased risk such as a family member who had colorectal cancer, we’ll start screenings even earlier. We could start as early as 10 years earlier than your most recent relative’s diagnosis. Now let’s talk about that dreaded C-word - colonoscopy. Bottom line, no one likes the idea of getting a colonoscopy. If you’ve had one in the past, I can tell you that the preparation has gotten better. It’s not fun, but it’s definitely better than it used to be. While colonoscopy remains the gold standard for screening for colon cancers, there are other less-invasive options out there. There are roughly a dozen options for colorectal cancer screening, including at-home test kits or exams that can be done in your doctor’s office, and they all discover cancer equally well. Your family physician should discuss all of the options with you. Remember, the best screening is the one that you actually do. Prevention is such a valuable tool when it comes to cancer. For years women have been comfortable talking about mammograms and discussing a colonoscopy shouldn’t be any different. Any good family doctor is going to have that conversation with you. Colorectal cancer screening should be discussed every year in your Annual Wellness Visit, along with all the other preventive screening measures you and your doctor lay out for you. As far as lifestyle approaches to decrease your risk for colorectal cancer, just having a good, clean, healthy diet goes a long way. High red meat consumption has been associated with colon cancers, while a diet high in fiber and leafy greens can be protective. With any disease or illness, the best approach is always prevention, and the first step to a solid prevention plan is having good communication with your family physician. About Millennium Physician Group: Millennium Physician Group is the largest comprehensive, independent physician group in Florida with more than 500 healthcare providers at 130 locations in 17 Florida counties serving 450,000 patients. Don’t let fear stop you from getting the care you need. Don’t delay getting essential medical care. We’ve put enhanced safety measures in place to help keep you safe. COVID-19 has stopped people from doing many things. But we can’t let it stop us from getting what we need most: medical care. BayCare’s St.Anthony’s Hospital is helping to keep our patients safe by following guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for safety processes and cleaning procedures. This makes sure that everyone can feel secure getting the care they need. Don’t let fear of this pandemic make other health conditions worse. Learn more: StAnthonys.org

By Caron Schwartz St. Petersburg’s Museum of Fine Arts Major renovation of their permanent collection galleries last fall made the museum feel like a new place. Now, through a yearlong sharing collaboration, four paintings from the Art Bridges Collection by celebrated 20th century American artists are on display in the museum’s Modern and Post War galleries. Works by Jacob Lawrence, Hughie Lee-Smith, Norman Wilfred Lewis, and Lee Krasner will remain on display through February 2022. A fifth painting by Marsden Hartley will arrive in June and remain on view through August 2022. The loans expand the museum’s inclusivity with works by Black, female, and LGBTQ artists.

PET HEALTH

By Dr. Scot Trefz, D.V.M. to 250 worms. Each worm can live 5-7 years. Even immature worms can affect your cat’s health, causing serious breathing difficulties. In ferrets, one or two heartworms often settle in the pulmonary artery in the heart. As they grow, the heart becomes dangerously enlarged.

Prevent Heartworm Disease

Heartworm disease is a life-threatening parasitic infection, which sickens dogs, cats, and ferrets. It is much easier to prevent than to treat. How Pets Get the Disease Heartworm disease is transmitted when a mosquito bites an infected animal and then bites your pet. Heartworm larvae circulate through their bloodstreams. Months later, the larvae begin to grow into long, white worms that look like spaghetti. Those that reach the blood vessels of the heart and lungs cause the most damage. Male heartworms measure 4-6 inches in length, while females may be twice as long. Dogs can be infected with up

Symptoms of Heartworm Disease Dogs may start to cough, or seem abnormally tired, eat less, lose weight and have trouble breathing. The infection can eventually cause a swollen abdomen, abnormal lung sounds, collapse and even death. Cats and ferrets infected with heartworms may develop Heartworm Associated Respiratory Disease. When immature worms reach the small lung arteries, an inflammatory response occurs damaging the air sacs, arteries, and small airways. Infected cats may have difficulty breathing or breathe rapidly. Other signs include disinterest in food, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, gagging, and collapse. Treatment varies. Dogs get medications that

kill heartworms and reduce inflammation. Medications that kill heartworms aren’t safe for cats or ferrets. Cats get drugs to reduce inflammation, antibiotics, cardiovascular medication or oxygen if needed. Surgery may be needed. Even if heartworm surgery is successful, damage to your pet’s heart, lungs, and organs will be permanent. How Can Heartworm Disease Be Prevented? Oral, topical, and injectable heartworm medications reduce your pet’s heartworm risk. Your veterinarian can help. Give your pet heartworm medication year-round. Mosquito season may not always follow the same pattern every year. If you enjoyed this article, visit Dr. Scot M. FISHING

By Capt. Dylan Hubbard

170 John’s Pass Boardwalk, Madeira Beach • 727.393.1947 www.HubbardsMarina.com

FISHING INSHORESheepshead continue to bite well. They love fiddler crabs, small but strong hooks and light leaders with minimal weight. These sheepsheads will continue to bite continuously through the year but spread out as the water warms up. Spanish mackerel showed back up around beach piers and jetties. They love chasing fast moving flashy lures or gotcha plugs retrieved quickly. Whiting and silver trout are also biting well around the beaches and passes and beach piers as well. Snook action is going well along the flats, residential canals, and mangrove shorelines. Redfish continue to be super active. These guys are in rather good concentrations around the bays especially along those grass flats and mangrove shorelines in around 2-4ft of water. Cut bait and slower moving soft plastics are favorites to target redfish. Trout action remains incredibly good this time of year in the flats, mangroves and dock lines. Greenbacks and live shrimp are go-to live baits for trout on light tackle and the soft plastic shrimp or paddle tails are great artificial baits. Top water lures work best at sunrise, dusk or during very overcast days. Snook, redfish, and trout remain catch and release only through end of May. Pompano has really picked up too. These guys love fiddler crabs, sand fleas or live shrimp on the bottom around those sandy edges of the flats or channels. The small bucktails with the ‘feathers’ or ‘hair’ trimmed back just behind the apex of the hook or the doc’s goofy jigs are best for the pompano. NEAR & OFFSHOREHogfish action continues to impress near shore, biting best at 40-60ft. Live shrimp, fiddler crabs, sandfleas, and rock shrimp work well. Lane snapper are really thick from 50-110ft. These guys will also take small pieces of squid or chunks of threadfin. Mangrove snapper is strong at 110-140ft of water offshore. In 50-90ft use live shrimp near the mangroves using the same knocker rig method we use for hogfish. Red grouper action is going well around that deepest water close to the closure line. The deep-water closure or 20 fathom closure continues through the end of March but that hasn’t slowed us down from seeing some nice red grouper around 100120ft of water. Fishing potholes, hard rock bottom and small ledges were seeing some nice hungry red grouper mixed in with steady mangrove, lane, and vermillion snapper action too. Scamp grouper are mainly caught out deeper past the 120ft mark, but we have seen some nice fish caught lately even in the open area when fishing around 120ft for those red grouper where we can keep them! The scamp love smaller pinfish or threadfins most of the time. Also, we catch them often while targeting mangrove snapper with the double snell rig and lighter tackle. Blackfin tuna are around right now occasionally past 100ft of water. – Capt Dylan Hubbard, Hubbard’s Marina – Call or text me anytime at (727) 393-1947. www.HubbardsMarina.com

MARCH 2021 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

Tampa Bay Markets has NEWS! In addition to The Corey Sunday Market, they were asked to restart the Wednesday Morning Market on Madeira Way in “downtown Madeira Beach.” The smaller footprint works well for a “maker’s market” with a changing variety of vendors offering arts, crafts, specialty foods and lots more, 10am-2pm Wednesdays. This month Chef Kevin Johnson of Crooked Johnson Meats is highlighted. He grew up in a family that loved to travel and cook. In Charleston, South Carolina he experienced local seafood prepared in the Gullah Geechee culture. “Fishing and cooking was something we did each week.” During high school his first job was baking bread at a diner in Cape Canaveral. He was Chef at Ulysses’s Prime Steakhouse until his journey returned him to the Cypress in downtown Charleston. Working under Chef Craig Deihl and CDC Bob Cook he developed a love for the versatility of pork and charcuterie while learning how to cook local ingredients with respect and with a greater understanding of the art of culinary and the community effort it takes to create a sustainable food culture. He moved to St. Petersburg to bring his charcuterie knowledge to the Bay Area. Crooked Johnson was started with the intent to offer a few varieties of sausages that may be harder to locate in the Bay Area and he now offers his style of charcuterie “traditional and untraditional” at the Corey Avenue Sunday Market on St. Pete Beach every Sunday 10am-2pm.

“Get Sirius About Your Future”

March 2021 Astrology Energy planet Mars leaves methodical Taurus on the 5th to visit changeable, versatile Gemini the rest of March. We are ready to tackle many projects and may be impatient to get started! Thinking planet Mercury is gaining speed in inventive Aquarius and our minds are working overtime. There are no retrograde planets this month, so the cosmic currents flow forward and smoothly unfold as the winter season gets ready to leave us. The vibrant Sun & love planet Venus travel together in dreamy, creative Pisces for the next three weeks. This brings out our compassion and need to help others, gives strong faith, and lets us wear our rose-colored glasses for a while. We are sensitive and intuitive and may need time for reflection. ENCOURAGING WORDS

By Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones

Is Your Dream Waiting for YOU to Come True?

“GO CONFIDENTLY in the direction of your DREAMS! Live the life you’ve imagined.” - Henry David Thoreau Have you ever been called to do something for yourself or go in a direction that you knew would gain disapproval from others? Most of us have at some time or another. Recently, I fulfilled a dream I’ve had for quite a while; I got a tattoo. If my beloved, deceased mother could see it I am sure she would not give her nod of approval; it was her long-held opinion that only Hell’s Angels and crusty old sailors, of which I am neither, had tattoos. One of my old friends rolled his eyes, wondering if I had gone bonkers, trying to look “hip” at seventy-one years of age. I assured him that wasn’t the case and that while I loved him, I didn’t do it for his or anyone else’s approval or disapproval. I explained that I wasn’t a latent rebel trying to make a statement to the world; I did it for myself. Period. What I know is that getting a tattoo is all about commitment; once you start there is no turning back; it becomes part of who you

are. Because I believe I know who I am I wasn’t looking for another label to define me; I didn’t want a tattoo to have a tattoo. In other words, inscribing “Born to be wild,” or having a skull and crossbones, or even my wife’s name tattooed on my arm didn’t call to me. I wanted my tattoo to be symbolic for me, as a mindfulness tool, to serve as a reminder of who I came here to be and what was mine to do. If I was going to be looking at it every day for the rest of my life, I wanted it to mean something to me – even if no one else saw it or liked it. One day, while looking at my business logo, I was reminded of why I chose a compass to go with my vision statement of “Guiding People to Purpose.” With that remembrance, in a heartbeat, I knew what my tattoo would be. I reasoned, with a compass on my arm and the North Star pointing upward, toward my heart, my innate guidance system had a built-in visual display. In those moments

when I may be feeling uncertain, or in need of a reminder of what is important, with one glance at my arm I will always know where to look first for guidance and direction; not to the world or the people in it, but within. The takeaway: It’s important to listen to what the people who matter in your life have to say, but at the end of the day no one knows better than you what dreams and aspirations lie silently in your heart waiting for you to come true. You don’t necessarily have to get a tattoo on your arm to know that, you just need to, as Thoreau infers, be willing to go confidently in the direction of your dreams when your heart calls and live the life YOU have imagined even when others may think you have gone a bit bonkers, and they will, and that’s okay.
