One of the great things about doing what we do is sharing what we learn about our neighbors. There is so much talent here. Last month we highlighted the new Academy of Performance Arts on the beach. We have written before about Steinway artist Rebecca Penneys, who appears again on the facing page. At press time we also learned that Eileen D’Angelo Mattioli, who has been teaching private piano and accordion lessons for over 61 years,has been named “Steinway Teacher of the Year.” The award will be presented to her at her annual recital June 25th, 3 pm at St. Pete Beach Community Center,

Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival July 10 to 29, 2017 Concert pianist and career piano educator, Rebecca Penneys has just ‘retired’ from the Eastman School of Music, and is preparing for her 5th Florida-based tuition-free summer piano festival, July 10-29, 2017 at USF in north Tampa. The 3-week program is like a finishing school for up to 40 of the most promising concert piano students from top music schools in 24 countries around the globe. For piano music fans who spend the summer here and can make it to USF in north Tampa, the festival offers the opportunity to hear some truly great piano concerts for no more than a donation at the door. The beer industry contributes more than $21.68 billion a year to Florida’s economy, according to a new study commissioned by the National Beer Wholesalers Assoc. and the Beer Institute.
Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) announced today that it will begin the next steps in its transition to a Downtown Tampa location after August 13, 2017. TradeWinds Island Resorts added an on-site real estate brokerage office – TradeWinds Real Estate Company, LLC – located at TradeWinds Island Grand Resort. St. Petersburg & DTSP Rick vs. Rick: Former St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker is running for a third term as he seeks to unseat incumbent Rick Kriseman. At presstime, St. Petersburg City Council will potentially allocate $17.5 million to kick off construction on a new pier at its June 1 meeting, paving the way for construction to begin next month, which is closely aligned with the city's latest timeline. The funding will go toward the first phase of construction on pilings, the deck and sea wall. An official groundbreaking is expected sometime around the third week of June. The historic State Theatre in St. Petersburg’s Central Arts District was rebranded with a new logo, brand guidelines and website that reflects the historic background and iconic architecture of the State Theatre. Hyatt Place, Downtown St. Pete will become St. Pete’s tallest building (41 stories) featuring 175 rooms, making up 13 stories in the mixed-use development dubbed One St. Petersburg. The complex will also feature 253 condominium units in the heart of downtown. Late 2017. The deadline to submit application is Friday, June 16th at 5:00 pm.
City Council recently approved budget amounts for the CRA grants including nearly $412,000 for commercial grants and nearly $122,000 for housing & neighborhood revitalization and multi-family residential property improvement grants. http://www.stpete.org/city_ departments/southside_cra.php Port Tampa Bay is getting $9 million to widen and deepen its Big Bend Channel that would allow it to service larger cargo ships. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has allocated $9 million in Fiscal Year 2017 federal funds toward the $55 million Big Bend Channel project. The channel, which connects to the Tampa Harbor main channel, will be deepened from 34 feet to 43 feet and widened from 200 feet to 250 feet. Tampa Bay Rays opened a ridshare lot at The Trop, making it more convenient to grab Uber and Lyft. St. Pete Beach resident Dr. Bill Hogarth was humble as he was honored by all at Duckworth Steel Boats in Tarpon Springs where the Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO) and the University of South Florida (USF) hosted a "Launching & Christening Ceremony" May 23, for the W.T. Hogarth, a new research vessel replacing the retiring 50-year old “R/V Bellows”. USF President Judy Genshaft and Representative Kathleen Peters each broke champagne bottles on the hull of the new 78-foot vessel. The W.T. Hogarth will help academic researchers and marine science students study oil spills, red tide outbreaks and better understand marine life & fisheries.
Dr. Hogarth’s vita includes: • Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative Board (GoMRI) studying oil spill effects • Regional Chancellor - USF St. Petersburg - August 2012 - June 2013 • Dean of the USF’s College of Marine Science - January 2008-2011 • Assistant Administrator of the National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS) at the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) 2001-2008 • Chairman of the International Whaling Commission • Chairman of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas • Director of North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries, 1986 – 1994

At that time, staff will be able to update microchip information and provide vaccine records. www.pinellascounty.org/ animalservices The Beaches & Beyond The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has allocated $30 million to the Pinellas County Shore Protection Project, aimed at restoring and protecting the county’s beaches including Sand Key, Treasure Island, & Upham Beach. Pinellas County figures from 2015 show beach-related tourism spending hit $2.3 billion annually and supported some 47,000 jobs while contributing $145 million per year in state and local taxes. The project is designed to reduce storm damage to condos, roads and other upland infrastructure and provide environmental benefits for nesting sea turtles & shorebirds. The eight month Upham Beach rock groin installation begins in June, supervised by Pinellas County. The Yellow bags will be removed from the five locations currently on the beach and replaced with four new limestone rock t-groins.
St. Pete Beach will host a powerboat race June 17-18. St. Pete Beach approved a new fire contract retroactive to Oct. 1 2016 and through Sept. 30, 2019 which addresses fire fighters’ pension plans and retirement system. Parks For Every Passion At Florida Botanical Garden, a children’s walking trail blooms with outdoor musical instrutments. With the aid of a map available online or at the Garden Welcome Center, families can start at the Butterfly Garden, hike over to the boardwalk Tree Station, and scan for wildlife with the binoculars near the pond, then stroll through our Fruit Garden, while FBG’s mascot, Flora, teaches fun facts about Florida fruits. At McGough Park in Largo, you can participate in a drum circle, hike to the Intracoastal, feed alligator and snapping turtles and ogle the owls, hawks and American Eagle in their rescued bird habitats. You can also take your dog to play at Anderson Park, Boca Ciega Park, Chesnut Park, Eagle Lake Park, Sand Key Park and Walsingham Park. Sawgrass Lake Park: Here alligators sun themselves close up and personal and you can climb the tower for a bird’s eye view of the park. Hike the largest maple swamps on the Gulf Coast of Florida as you walk the mile-long boardwalk and half-mile dirt trail where you’ll see birds,
butterflies, plants and animals in their natural settings. Herons, egrets, ibis, wood storks, alligators and turtles can be seen along the canals and lakes. Thousands of birds migrate through the park during the fall and spring, attracting birders and eco-tourists from all over the country. • Guided hikes through coastal mangrove and upland ecosystems of the preserve are held each Saturday 9 – 11 am. Experienced Center volunteers lead guided hikes for the general public that examine the best of our cultural and environmental attributes. Weekly guided hikes are free. • Go birding once a month with outings led by experienced birders 8 am – 10 am. Learn the identifying marks and behaviors of our feathered year-round residents and seasonal visitors while helping us compile an annual checklist of the Preserve’s birds. These hikes are designed to take advantage of all levels of birding experience. Binoculars and bird guides are available. Recommended for adults. • Are you a camera buff? Once a month, 8 am – 10 am, you can take a quick class and hike the Preserve in search of that perfect shot. This program provides great opportunities for photographers of all levels to hone their skills. Effective June 5 through August 1, 2017 • Potable water restrictions will change to one-day-per-week schedule • Customers should reduce non-essential water use to conserve resource • Due to a rainfall deficit, this is the driest dry season in 103 years! Lawn watering is limited to a once-per-week schedule using potable, well, lake or pond sources as follows: Watering Days: Addresses ending in 0 or 1: Monday; 2 or 3: Tuesday; 4 or 5: Wednesday; 6 or 7: Thursday; 8 or 9: Friday; mixed or no addresses: Friday. • PROHIBITED lawn irrigation hours: 8 am – 6 pm • Handwatering & micro-irrigation of plants (other than lawns) can be done on any day-any time, if needed. • New lawns and plants have a 60-day establishment period. On days 1-30, watered any day of the week. During days 31-60, watered approximately every other day. Even-numbered addresses water Tuesday, Thursday & Sunday. Odd-numbered addresses water Monday, Wednesday & Saturday. • Homeowners associations and other entities must suspend any requirement to replace lawns, pressure wash or engage in other activity which is not in alignment with the water shortage declaration. • Car washing limited to ONCE-PER-WEEK on designated watering day. Water Adventures You can swim or skim board at the beach, kayak or paddleboard with rentals from the local surf ships, t ake a surf lesson or snorkel. St. Pete Beach Community Center’s pool and Walter Fuller are always inviting, with lots of activities for tykes of all ages, even water aerobics for adults. Treasure Island Yacht Club, Pasadena Yacht Club and Isla del Sol also offer limited summer memberships for families to use. But nothing says summer fun more than a water park with Busch Gardens’
Adventure Island, being the most rip-roaring spot in Tampa Bay. High speed slides, corkscrews, a giant wave pool, waterfalls and a rambling river with sandy beaches makes it a tropical paradise. Closer to home, Splash Harbour Water Park adjacent to the Holiday Inn Indian Rocks Beach is all the rage. Attractions include Smuggler’s Run tube ride down a 42 foot tall slide with twists, turns and an exciting bowl feature. Pirate's Plunge is a single rider body slide that ends in riders plunging in to the cool blue water.
Great White Lazy River is a 600 foot long relaxing lazy river featureing waterfalls, sprays, and mists to keep you cool while you’re soaking up the Florida sun. Game & Fun Zones Without even leaving St. Pete Beach, theres the BEACH ESCAPE GAME. Small groups of friends, family members, and coworkers find themselves locked in a room with 60 minutes on the clock. HEALTH & WELLNESS Summer Tips for Staying Healthy By Nanette Wiser Whether you’re planning a staycation or vacation out of town, here are some tips for staying healthy at home, at play and on the road. We’ve talked about the importance of sunscreen in our past issue. Here are some more recommendations for enjoying paradise this summer.
• To soothe and cool skin, take a cool bath or shower or apply cool compresses to the area. • For pain, take ibuprofen or acetaminophen. (As always, check with your physician first about what you can take.) • If blisters form, don't break them.

Are your immunizations up to date if you’re going abroad? Have you had a recent tetanus shot and if so, be sure to bring copies of both papers. Add to that a week’s worth of extra meds and copies of your prescriptions and all allergies. Prevention goes a long way. If you are going into a Zika zone, be sure to take extra precautions and if you’re pregnant, or considering getting pregnant, change your travel plans.
To protect your vision at work and at play, wear protective eyewear. When outdoors, wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of ultraviolet A and B rays. Sunglasses can help prevent cataracts and surfer’s eye as well as wrinkles around the eyes. When playing sports or doing tasks such as mowing the lawn, wear protective eyewear and check with your eye doctor for sport-specific recommendations.
Stay Hydrated: Water plays a critical role in many bodily functions like eliminating toxins, lubricating of joints, and helping digestion. Water loss can also upset the balance of minerals (salts & sugars) in your body, which can then impair its proper functioning. To prevent dehydration, keep yourself hydrated with at least 1.5 liters of water a day – but never all at once. Instead, keep drinking water and other fluids (soups, milk, fresh juice, coconut water, lemon water) and also eat water-rich foods such as salads and fruits The weather and your level of physical activity affect how much water you need but on average, an adult woman needs approximately 2.1 liters of water in a day while a man needs about 2.6 liters. You might need more if you’re on a high protein or high fiber diet, or if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
Stingray Stingray Shuffle:
Two early signs of dehydration are thirst and darker-colored urine as well as feeling nauseous, dizzy, or tired; getting muscle cramps and headaches; and having a dry mouth. If you start losing consciousness or feel confused, you could be dangerously dehydrated and might need immediate medical attention.
Sunburn 101: You feel asleep or forgot to re-apply your sunscreen. Now, you’re a lobster. Here are some general tips for reducing the pain and discomfort. And for heaven’s sake, get out of the sun. • Apply aloe or over-the-counter moisturizing lotion to skin as directed.
You know the drill; shuffle your feet to avoid a painful stingray sting. If medical attention is not readily available, the following guidelines are recommended in treating a stingray sting: • Flush the wound with fresh water. • For pain relief, soak the wound in water as hot as the person can tolerate (approximately 110 F, 43.3 C) • Use tweezers to remove the stingers. • Scrub the wound with soap and fresh water. • Do not cover the wound with tape or close it with stitches. Apply pressure to stop the bleeding. • Apply topical antibiotic ointment if signs of infection, such as pus, redness, or heat, occur. • Check with your physician to see if you
need oral antibiotics that are usually recommended for infection. • Patients with an impaired immune system (for example, HIV, diabetes, cancer) should seek medical care.
Insect Stings: Whether it’s a mosquito or a bee, here are some general tips for those who are not allergic to stings (check with your physician). • Move away from the stinging or biting insect. Bees will alert other bees, making them more likely to sting. • Remain as calm and quiet as possible. Movement increases the spread of venom in the bloodstream. • If you have been stung by a bee and the stinger is still in the skin, remove the stinger as quickly as possible. • If you have been stung on the arm or leg, lower the limb at the time of the sting to slow the spread of venom. Hours later, if swelling is present, you can elevate the limb to help reduce swelling. • Apply an ice pack to a bite or sting for 15 to 20 minutes once an hour for the first 6 hours. When not using ice, keep a cool, wet cloth on the bite or sting for up to 6 hours. Always keep a cloth between your skin and the ice pack. Do not apply ice for longer than 15 to 20 minutes at a time. Do not fall asleep with the ice on your skin. • Try a non-prescription medicine for the relief of itching, redness, and swelling. Be sure to follow the non-prescription medicine precautions. Don’t have any in stock? Hit the kitchen, and hold a refrigerated, dampened green tea bag on the bite or take a soak in a soothing oatmeal bath.

Maximo Marina Situated at 4801 37th St. South in St. Petersburg, the marina opened in 1959 with 550 slips as the largest covered marina anywhere. It was acquired by Chicago-based Bixby Bridge Capital in 2015, with IGY hired to rebuild and manage the marina. Lee Hicks, IGY General Manager, told Paradise News, “The $24 million project will reopen in 2018 with 212 covered slips. Schedule has this July completion of new Sailfish and Southeast Bulkhead Docks, and March 2018 completion of new Northeast Bulkhead and Tarpon Docks, and North Bulkhead Marlin Docks for customer berthing. A new $2.5 million The Getaway Restaurant opens this fall.” As the largest marina in the area it offers a protected harbor with calm waters and safe berthing. The marina provides easy access to the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) and, the 200-foot-wide direct channel to open waters sets boaters free to cruise around the Gulf Coast. Located between the Gulf of Mexico and the ICW, its fresh spring-fed water basin reduces barnacle accumulation and saltwater damage to paint and wood. Turtle Help Sea Turtle Trackers Protect the Sea Turtles
The beaches of Pinellas County are an important nesting place for endangered Loggerhead sea turtles and the gulf coast is the exclusive breeding area for the endangered Kemps ridley sea turtles. Summer is their season. For more than 35 years, Bruno Falkenstein and the team at Sea Turtle Trackers, Inc. have devoted their time and energy to protecting sea turtles on St. Pete Beach and at Shell Key Nature Preserve. Their 501(c)(3) non-profit organization has over 100 volunteers who donate their time. April through October is the “busy season” as they do turtle patrol and nest monitoring. Early morning beach patrol consists of walkers and the ‘Turtle Truck’ on the 4.5 mile-long St. Pete Beach. Shell Key Nature Preserve patrol requires a daily boat ride and 3-mile hike. Starting around the end of June, they also have night-time volunteers who “baby-sit” nests that are due to hatch. They monitor changes in the nest, and when it begins to hatch, they help to ensure every hatchling safely reaches the Gulf waters. The team also responds to stranding calls due to cold-stun, injury, and illness throughout the year, transporting any live turtles to authorized rehabilitation facilities. The volunteers are committed to the education and outreach portion of their mission. They participate in local fairs and festivals, host educational events on the beach, and visit schools and community groups. They tailor their talks
Nesting Season
Through the efforts of groups like the Sea Turtle Trackers, Florida FWC, local residents and businesses, and many others, the sea turtle population is making a recovery. The last two nesting seasons on St. Pete Beach and Shell Key were both record years with over 90 nests laid by female loggerhead sea turtles. Natural weather events wreaked havoc on the hatching success of many of those, but the Sea Turtle Trackers feel encouraged by the numbers in recent years. One of the most important roles that the Sea Turtle Tracker volunteers play is as educators to the public about the best ways they can protect sea turtles. They spread the word about keeping the beach Clean, Dark, and Flat.
“Clean” means free of litter and any other obstacle that could impede a nesting female. The Sea Turtle Trackers would encourage visitors not to bring plastics to the beach because too much of it unfortunately ends up in the waters. All beach chairs and cabanas should be removed every night. STT volunteers can often be seen gathering trash during beach clean-ups or on regular morning patrols. “Dark” refers to the importance of only using red light when walking the beach after dark. White light from windows, flashlights, and cell phones can disorient both nesting females and hatchlings. “Flat” is relating to the need to fill in all holes and to flatten sand castles after a day in the sun. Mosquito Control Mosquito Control is encouraging citizens to do their part to reduce the mosquito population with some simple steps: • Empty water from any item that can hold water (examples: flower pots, garbage cans, recycling containers, wheel barrows, aluminum cans, boat tarps, old tires and buckets). • Flush birdbaths & wading pools weekly. • Flush ornamental bromeliads or treat with BTI, a biological larvicide available at home stores. • Clean roof gutters, which can become clogged and hold water. • Change the water in outdoor pet dishes regularly. • Keep pools and spas chlorinated and filtered. • Stock ornamental ponds with mosquito-eating fish. • Cover rain barrels with screening. • Check for standing water under houses, near plumbing drains, under air conditioner drip areas, around septic tanks and heat pumps. • Take steps to eliminate standing water, improve drainage and prevent future puddling. Many local homes have items or areas that contain standing water – ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes. Mosquito larvae only need a fraction of an inch of standing water to survive.

Trash & Fishing Line Worldwide, 14 million tons of trash are dumped in the ocean annually. Marine debris is not only ugly, but dangerous to marine life and human health. Many forms of debris are not biodegradable, causing problems for years to come. Improperly discarded fishing line from popular fishing spots or boats can entangle birds and be inadvertently transported to bird roosting and nesting areas, where birds and other wildlife can easily become entangled or hooked. Plastic line can take over 500 years to decompose, so Tampa Bay Watch has 175 fishing line recycling stations or "monotubes" around to encourage the proper disposal of line. In 2016, with the help of volunteers, 434 miles of line was collected and recycled. Tampa Bay Watch organizes three large annual coastal cleanups. In 2016, 621 volunteers removed 4,569 pounds of debris including items like styrofoam cups, construction debris, car batteries and countless cigarette butts, party balloons and plastic bags from shorelines. Maintaining its commitment to practicing superior environmental stewardship, Pinellas County has joined a regional effort to promote recycling of plastic and encourage residents to â&#x20AC;&#x153;trash the bag.â&#x20AC;? The multimedia public education campaign features a new bay-spanning video and co-branded webpage, TampaBayRecycles.org, which will provide recycling information and encourage residents to keep recycling bag-free, no matter where they are in the Tampa Bay area. Partners in this effort include City of St. Petersburg, City of Tampa and Hillsborough County. Plastic bags and bagged recyclables arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t recycled because they canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be efficiently sorted by recycling equipment. Plastic bags also get tangled in the sorting equipment, which causes equipment damage, creates health and safety hazards for workers, reduces the amount of recyclables that can be recovered, and increases the cost of the recycling process. All recyclables should be placed in recycling carts and municipal drop-off containers loosely, not bagged. Using reusable bags is more eco-friendly than using disposable plastic bags when shopping. Plastic bags can be reused for other purposes around the house, recycled at participating retailers, or disposed of in garbage carts. All four jurisdictions participating in the regional recycling effort use Waste-toEnergy facilities for trash disposal, turning garbage into renewable electricity. Curbside and residential recycling systems are only designed to process certain items, including: â&#x20AC;˘ Clean and empty plastic bottles and containers â&#x20AC;˘ Clean and empty aluminum cans â&#x20AC;˘ Clean and empty glass bottles and jars â&#x20AC;˘ Dry paper, newspaper, and junk mail â&#x20AC;˘ Clean and empty metal containers â&#x20AC;˘ Clean and empty milk and juice cartons â&#x20AC;˘ Dry flattened cardboard â&#x20AC;˘ Dry paperboard boxes (such as cereal boxes) This partnership marks the first time Pinellas County, Hillsborough County, the City of Tampa, and the City of St. Petersburg have worked together on a single regional recycling campaign. In Shore The big front we had blow through has the water dirty inside Johns Pass for the next day or two. This dirty water has the sheepshead and black drum very excited and ready to eat. Sheepshead love pieces of live or dead shrimp around the pilings of the docks or bridge. Black drum love large shrimp or smaller crabs weighted to bottom around the same areas you catch sheepshead. Steve Raines from Wisconsin was catching speckled trout around John’s Pass Bridge using spro jigs. Tarpon have moved into the pass and are being spotted rolling through the pass, you can catch large tarpon early morning as they head out of John’s Pass and move south along the beaches.
Near Shore Before the big cold front we had some stellar near shore fishing early this past week. The hogfish bite really picked up for us and we were catching them like we did in the cooler months getting a half dozen or more each day on live shrimp. The red grouper also got more excited for us too biting live pinfish or large squid strips. Kingfish action is still sporadic but the mackerel cooperated well this week. The waters will calm down by the time you read this report, but it will take till Saturday or early Sunday before the waters clear up and the near shore fishing recovers. Offshore We have not had an offshore fishing trip since our latest report. However, we are looking forward to the start of Red snapper and gag grouper season June first. The gags will be out deeper since the water is hot. I would start looking for them past that 120 foot mark and the deeper the better the big boy gags will be caught in the 150-200 foot range. The red snapper seem to be everywhere this year as they get more and more populous and aggressive.
The best area to start is past 100 foot but were seeing them as shallow in high numbers in the 70-80 foot range. Best area as in the past is past the 120 foot mark 30-35 miles from shore or great. Red snapper tackle is 60-80lb test on a 6ot reel or better with a 7ot circle hook.
