Gulf Beaches Rotary Club presents $25,200 to Madeira Beach Recreation Dept., proceeds from Spring Break Carnival 2017. The Carnival relocated to Madeira Beach in 2016 from its prior location in Treasure Island Community Park after it was moved off Treasure sland’s Beach after complaints and a lawsuit from several local hotels about parking and too many events being held on the sandy beach. Madeira Beach’s new city recreation center has proven a popular venue for such activities.

Letters Thank you for a fabulous summer issue featuring a great selection of Marinas for virtually every boaters’ lifestyle. With appreciation, - Joy Hyland I used a coupon in Paradise News magazine to take my cats to the vet. I saved $48 on each cat, thanks to your magazine. I have a friend coming in to visit next week. We will be using your Paradise News to guide us. - Christie Fisher Could you please place the ad below in your Classified Ads under FURNITURE? THANKS. PS: love your magazine. - Theresa Schefstad Thank you for your support of St. Petersburg City Theatre. Your generous in-kind donation of printing and distributing the informational flyers has been instrumental in growing our membership. Your guys are the best! Peace – Lisa Maroni & the whole SPCT community! Thank you again for this exciting piece on our Florida Preservation conference this year. We appreciate all the time you dedicated to the work of preserving Florida’s special historic places! And for permission to reprint the article in our FTHP Newsletter with appropriate credit to Paradise News. All the best, - Melissa Wyllie Executive Director, Florida Trust for Historic Preservation Dear Peter and Renee, I really enjoyed reading the article “Marinas Our Gateway to the Gulf” in your recent (June-July) issue of “Paradise News.” I have always found such articles encouraging to the boating community and as Marina Director for the City of Gulfport I am especially interested. In his article the author, Steve Traiman, does a comprehensive job of discussing and describing the many local private marinas we

on the West coast are so fortunate to have. However, I was a little concerned that his article did not explicitly clarify his focus was exclusively on private marinas. You, of course, have now quickly concluded my understandable concern. But, that said, I understand where he was coming from and appreciate that he mentioned no other municipal marina and therefore our marina was not singled out for exclusion. But I still have a somewhat uncomfortable concern. For over 107 years the City of Gulfport and the Gulfport Municipal Marina motto can be found exactly as in Mr. Traiman’s article title: “…Gateway to the Gulf”. Now I would be the first to admit this not a wholly unusual or unique motto that Mr. Traiman could not have thought of on his own, but I am concerned. I am not asking for an apology or an explanation. Things happen and I am happy to have your publication and articles such as Mr. Traiman’s to help promote leisure activities and specifically, truly safe and enjoyable boating ownership for our West coast. But I would ask if you might consider running an article on our excellent local municipal marinas, some of which partner with private providers of leisure entertainment—for example, one of our commercial tenants “Tropical Island Getaway” drawing hundreds of visitors for daily boating excursions to Egmont Key. Best wishes for continued success, - Denis Frain, CMM; Gulfport Municipal Marina, Director of Marina Operations 4630 29th Ave S., Gulfport, 33711; www.mygulfport.us 727-893-1071 REPLY: Hi Denis - Thanks very much for your excellent comments on my recent article that was focused on a sampling of local private marinas. We certainly will consider your good suggestion for another story on our very fine municipal marinas, including Gulfport, Madeira Beach and Clearwater, among others. - Steve Traiman for Paradise News

Paradise NEWS

FROM THE PUBLISHERS Local residents and visitors alike love to learn about the history of our area. That’s one of the reasons we’ve been big supporters of St. Petersburg Preservation and the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum in Pass-a-Grille, the only museum focused on the barrier islands, perhaps the first settlement on Florida’s west coast. Local author R. Wayne Ayers and the University of Tampa Press recently released Pioneer Days on Tampa Bay’s Gulf Beaches. Mr. Ayer’s two-year-project, culled from press clippings and early photographs provides early settler George Lizotte’s “eye witness account of the settlement of the barrier islands and Pass-a-Grille from 1898-1940”. Thanks, Wayne for this fascinating look into our island history. Incidently, the “Chowder Challenge IV” which started in Pass-a-Grille’s Hurley Park 5 years ago as a fundraiser for the historical museum, then moved to Horan Park (7701 Boca Ciega Way, St. Pete Beach Comm. Center) in 2015 is headed back to Horan Park November 12 2017, under the leadership of the Pass-a-Grille Woman’s Club. They had hoped to return the event to Pass-a-Grille, but the repaving project on PAG Way is still using the park. The Fish Broil will be held there the weekend before. While residents love learning the history of the area, opinions vary about its future. Many locals are anxious to see hotel owners build new hospitality facilities on our islands to replace the aging structures that have graced our beautiful beaches since the fifties and sixties. Changing traveler tastes will eventually make our island seem old and outdated. New construction is needed to keep us competitive with other beach vacation alternatives. The desire for redevelopment is not universal. We saw that in the recent election in Madeira Beach which put new projects proposed there on at least a temporary hold. In St. Pete Beach too, three new legal challenges are holding up the TradeWinds’ offer to fund badly needed sewer repairs in advance of groundbreaking for their new Sugar Sands Resort on the site of the demolished Coral Reef. The anti-redevelopment voices in St. Pete Beach used to complain about the city’s comprehensive plan revision efforts, and any attempt at redevelopment saying “our infrastructure won’t handle it” citing leaky storm sewers that have contributed to the area’s sewer woes. Here is an offer of help to solve some of those problems for the long term, funded by the commercial sector, which appears to be a win-win offer for us all. Why can’t we all get behind this effort to build a better future for all concerned? It is a pleasure to provide updates on three of our favorite bistros, Da Sesto Italiano which recently expanded in Pinellas Park, MadFish, our top recommendation for both steaks and seafood and Chill, a top choice for both food and fun. Keep in mind that August-November are the months when the tropical storms are most active. Having a plan for yourself, your family and your pets will help keep everyone safe in the event that this is the year we have to deal with a serious summer storm once again.

- See you in October!

Da Sesto Italiano - Bigger & Better than Ever “Mangia! Mangia!”

by Peter Roos • Photos by Tropical Focus Photography For the past ten years, Da Sesto Italiano has been serving up the best authentic and traditional Italian food in Tampa Bay. The restaurant’s growing reputation for award-winning cuisine, had people flocking in droves to their cozy strip center location. Their recent move into the bigger, free-standing building just to the north was perfectly timed. “After moving to a bigger location, I thought people would not have to stand in line anymore to get in…” says Sesto. He was mistaken. You should still make reservations to ensure a seat in this popular restaurant. The new location can accommodate over 150 diners with an outside patio opening in the fall, enough to add a premium full liquor bar. News coverage of the multiple awards won by the “Top Local Chef” and Da Sesto Italiano this year, have catapulted them into a whole new level of fame and popularity. Some regulars were at first skeptical when they heard of a ‘bigger’ Da Sesto, thinking a larger place would diminish the intimacy level which was such a popular draw in the prior location. Rest assured that this is not the case. At Da Sesto Italiano, everyone is Famiglia and it shows. Sesto Ramadori is owner and chef. On most nights, you will see Sesto supervising with his wife Annick and daughter Ashley serving as hostesses. Just observe the interaction between the staff and the customers. It truly is “amore”. You will feel you’ve been transported to Italy. Sesto and his wife Annick, both hopeless romantics, had a vision for what they wanted their new restaurant to look and feel like. They wanted an old-world style ristorante, reminiscent of the bistros in the older parts of Italy. To remain intimate they created special separated areas. There is a dimly lit room, decorated with large old sepia-toned prints of Sesto’s Italian home town from the Marche

region. The room is separated from the main dining room by beautiful large sepia-toned roman style columns and arches. Floor-length curtains are tied to the columns, allowing the room to be closed off for private parties or lunch meetings, accommodating up to 22 people with a wall-mounted flat-screen monitor for presentations. Two corners of the restaurant feature two luxurious high-back round booths with seating for up to 6 people, topped by crystal drum shade chandeliers. Da Sesto Italiano can accommodate any type of party, from the private romantic dinner for two, to families and very large parties. Tables are beautifully set with black tablecloths, white napkins and flickering candles. There is live music several days a week. You’ll have no trouble selecting a wine to match your meal, as Da Sesto’s extensive wine list features almost 150 different kinds of wine certain to please any palate. Come see how seductive authenticity can be and come experience Sesto’s passion for his food culture. The menu is all encompassing: Custom antipastos, fresh pastas (even some gluten-free ones), veal, chicken, steak and plenty of fresh fish and shellfish. Grab a napkin and view the mouthwatering menu at www.dasesto.com. A 5-course family style gourmet dinner with wine is featured monthly and unlimited “Mussel Mondays”. Da Sesto Italiano is also available for all your private parties and outside catering needs. Open Mondays through Thursdays from 11am - 9pm, Fridays 11am - 11pm, and Saturdays from 4pm - 11pm. - Mad About Steak, Too by Peter Roos • Photos by Tropical Focus Photography

Chef Oliver and his sister Ella have had “an amazing season” at MadFish, by all accounts. The siblings have invested a great deal in the property in the two years since they took charge. They have turned the shiny diner into an environment diners seem to really love, and the exterior has transformed into an elegant, yet comfy dining patio that retains a beachy feel. Ella said the November issue of Paradise NEWS with Chef Oliver’s photo on the cover (which they still give away copies of at the restaurant) helped kick-off a terrific winter season that only started to soften when the rains began in June. Ella’s dad said they knew how effective Paradise NEWS had been for them as literally hundreds of diners had told them they had sworn they’d never eat there again until they read the glowing reviews in Paradise NEWS last fall. The cover photo of Chef Oliver with a wine glass has since wrapped a FREE Beach Ride van that frequently drops visitors at the shiny looking diner on the beach side at 5200 Gulf Blvd., right next

4.5 stars on almost 500 reviews. MadFish has also been rated 4.5 and above on over 200 Yelp reviews since February. to the round hotel in St. Pete Beach. In their November 2016 Paradise NEWS cover story we were careful to emphasize Chef Oliver’s steak cooking prowess, as the family bought the MadFish name from a prior operator. Online and in-person reviews rave not only about the seafood items offered, but the steaks as well, especially the Chateaubriand for two, the Ribeye, and the Chef Oliver’s Beef Wellington. According to Ella, almost 70% of MadFish sales this season was from Oliver’s prized steaks rather than seafood. MadFish was consistently in the top 5 favorites out of more than a hundred in St. Pete Beach on Tripadvisor averaging

Chill’in

- by Peter Roos • Photos by Tropical Focus Photography

One of the true innovators on the beaches, Ruthie Buxbaum’s Chill has evolved full-circle since they were featured on the cover of Paradise NEWS in February of 2016. They had recently opened the popular outdoor dining area after relocating a block and a half east from their original location on the corner of Gulf and Corey. Having started in January 2011 as ‘Steam’, the great little coffee shop that started it all, Chill has evolved into the restaurant and party headquarters at the heart of downtown St. Pete Beach at 357 Corey Ave. Everyone is thrilled that Carl their favorite piano entertainer has fully recovered from medical challenges and is back better than ever. The prominent bar area turns into a festive party when Carl takes over the piano bar every Thursday, Friday & Saturday night year-round. The 50-person party and meeting room in the back is in frequent demand, particularly near the holidays, and is available for breakfast and lunch groups to meet. Chill’s one of the ‘early openers’ on the beach, serving breakfast while other

Corey store owners are still in bed. Their new Sunday Brunch offers conventional breakfast items including custom omelettes and waffles, often with lunch, too… salmon, shrimp and a carving station along with an array of vegetables of the season, including all you care to eat for under $20. An awesome Bloody Mary Bar, a variety of Mimosas or your favorite beverage are also available from Chill’s premium full liquor bar. Dinner is served daily from 3 PM. Traditional entrees, from fish tacos, two gourmet burger choices with fries and Tuna Sashimi to Wild Salmon and Fresh Catch, Meatloaf, Filet Au Poivre and creative chicken dishes, all with gourmet sides, are priced $15 - $27. Then there’s the side of the menu that really sets Chill apart, the Small Plates designed for sharing. Small Plate Starters, priced $8 to $15, include Lobster Bisque and French Onion Soup, Goat Cheese Tapenade Terrine, Colossal Stuffed Black Olives, Black n Blue Fondue, Kale and Caesar Salads, Savory Brie and, more dessert than starters, Roasted Dates stuffed with gorgonzola or Brie with Brandied mixed nuts and apple slices. Small Plate Vegetables include Roasted Spaghetti Squash, Felafel, Sautéed Kale,

Java, kava, tea or me? In the heat of the day, nothing is cooler than hanging out in a coffeehouse. From downtown to the beaches, here are some of our favorite spots to eat, catch up with pals or work on WiFi.

Wings Coffee Bar & Café:

Gypsy Souls:

Addicted to the Bean:

Wings coffee bar offers a unique, relaxing, zen like atmosphere. This local watering hole comes complete with Kahwa coffee, Mother Kombucha on tap, local organic teas and fresh fruit smoothies. You will enjoy fares from some of the best local bakers and caterers, that can satisfy your sweet tooth, or provide you a tasty quick lunch. Several of our offerings are vegan or gluten free. And did someone say FREE WI-FI!

From the front, this cozy, eclectic Redington Beach coffeehouse doesn’t reveal its true nature. Once inside, wander to the back room for an amazing view of the water. There’s a lounge-like area with leather reading chairs, an Internet Cafe style room with outlets at every seat and best of all, a back yard patio for taking in some rays and nibbling their delicious baked goods. Open daily 7AM-5PM, they have earned 4.5 stars on Yelp and Trip Advisor. Reviews comment on coffee quality, staff friendliness and the cozy presentation. Also they have soy, almond & coconut milk just for you.

From either location (Isla del Sol and John’s Pass Village), you can wander with your cappuccino or smoothie and admire the water views. We love their s’more latte (espresso laced with toasted marshmallow, chocolate, a hint of white chocolate and steamed milk topped with whipped cream) and their Home & Heart rich vanilla flavor roasted right into the coffee served with a rock candy swizzle stick – sweet for you! Join them for breakfast, lunch (spinach and ricotta or ham or chicken salad croissants) or java & dessert and enjoy their featured artist of the month. addictedtothebeanfl.com

More than just a coffee shop, Wing's Coffee Bar and Bookstore bring the community together by hosting an eclectic array of events, from open mic nights to alternative health fairs. Check out their website (wings bookstore.com) for a calendar of each month's after hour events. Open Mon-Fri - 7am-7pm and weekends from 9am-5pm (727) 522-6657 www.wingsbookstore.com On the First Unity Campus 4500 4th St. N., St. Petersburg.

“Travel the world one cup at a time” Black Crow Coffee: Greg Bauman, owner of Indian Shores Coffee located in Indian Shores, Florida opened Black Crow Coffee with Deana Hawk in 2015 bringing the same uncompromising dedication to great coffee to Historic Old Northeast. Enjoy artisan coffees (drip, pour overs, brewed, cortado and more) and yummy delights such as ginger and molasses cookies, butter tarts, cinnamon rolls and bagels. Flavor your coffee with banana mocha or vanilla caramel for an extra dose of happy. blackcrowcoffeeco.com

macchiato, even an iced caramel latte and Ted’s cold brew. craftkafe.com

Coffee Grounds Café: Located next to Middlegrounds, this charming alpine cottage offers plenty of alfresco seating, a full bar, great coffee and delectable food. You can hang with your pet, enjoy sandwiches and wraps, drink a craft beer and enjoy an iced latte with a view of the Intercoastal behind and the Gulf on the front patio from early in the morning until midnight. http://coffeegroundscafe.com/

Sweet Brewnette: Bula Kafé: In addition to Kava, they serve Kahwa coffee, Nee cake pops and other delicious delights. Their sister spot, Bula’s on the Beach is in Madeira Beach. http://www.bula-kafe.com/

Craft Kafé: Located adjacent to Earth Origins on Central Ave. near Pasadena, this gluten-free kitchen dishes up some heavenly organic treats and beverages, from the chicken avocado cream and vegan beet salads to the grilled cheese and tomato jam sandwich plus espressos,

This darling Madeira Beach spot features art, hip vintage furnishings, comfy seating and sassy service. Serving breakfast and lunch, fresh squeezed orange juice, tropical smoothies, steak and egg with cheese panini, tomato basil feta frittata, fresh made Hyppo ice pops and one of the best salads in town, the Amalfi Love (organic arugula topped with shaved parmesan, sliced red grapes, fresh basil, pine nuts & house made lemon vinaigrette); this is a wonderful spot to gather before or after the beach. sweetbrewnettecafe.com

And If You’re Still Thirsty:

Belleair Coffee Company deserves special mention. With a beautiful chandelier private room, spectacular coffee and pastries, it’s a bit of a drive but worth it. Chill on Corey Avenue is not a traditional coffeehouse, but sitting alfresco on their patio with a delicious iced coffee never gets old; and their breakfast and homemade muffins rock my world. We also like the Craftsman House Café & Gallery, where we can admire jewelry and pottery, then sit on the porch and contemplate our creative spirit with a cuppa tea and delicious artisan dishes. Alesia Restaurant is the place to go for a Monte Cristo sandwich and iced Vietnamese coffee sweetened with condensed milk. Further north, Indian Shores Coffee beckons with good brew and eats, sometimes with weekend music. PN

This year’s Florida Preservation Conference, held in St. Petersburg May 17-19, was an outstanding success, according to Melissa Wyllie, Executive Director of the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation (FTHP). She told Paradise News, “Sessions featuring everything from sea level rise to preserving historic cemeteries, one-of a kind tours of beautiful St. Petersburg and unique special events drew nearly 200 active preservationists from around the state and across the U.S. They were able to reconnect with each other and our shared mission of preserving the historic places that make Florida unique. We left the conference recharged and even more motivated to protect our state’s historic resources.â€? New Board President Friederike Mittner added: “During my term I will work to cultivate our preservation programs and outreach so they are relevant and meaningful to all of the people of our state. Today it is a jewel of Florida’s preservation movement and an outstanding museum, visited by thousands of people every year. “Fast forward 40 years -- the Florida Trust’s core mission has remained focused on preservation, and the Trust has helped preserve and restore many historic sites across the state. Desk of Sheriff Bob Gualtieri It’s back-to-school time, so get ready for your first lesson of the school year: traffic safety. The streets on which you transport your children to school or they travel to the bus stop are populated by drivers on their cell phones, putting on their make-up, and eating breakfast as they rush to make it to work or drop off their own kids on time. In addition to average pedestrians’ usual dangers, like drivers’ blind spots and violations, young children’s slower walking speeds, small stature, minimal traffic experience, still-developing cognitive abilities, and general impulsiveness increase the threat of an accident. So whether you drive your children to school or you send them to the bus stop, we’ve got some back-toschool traffic safety tips for you and your students.

For you During the school year, you can expect increased traffic in the mornings and afternoons. Allot extra time to get where you’re going to prevent rushing and making careless, dangerous mistakes. It is illegal – not to mention dangerous – to pass a school bus when it displays its stop signal. So unless the roadway is divided by an unpaved space of at least 5 feet, a raised median, or a physical barrier, hit the brakes while students board and disembark the bus. There is a reason that speeding fines are doubled in school zones and designated school crossings. Be alert for signs

designating such areas as well as for school crossing guards who will help direct you. For your kids Riding the bus? Stand at least three giant steps from the curb while waiting for the bus. Stay there until it comes to a complete stop and opens the doors before boarding. Riding a bicycle? Florida law requires children under age 16 to wear a helmet while riding a bike. Check bikes regularly to ensure they’re properly maintained, and remember the basic rules of the road: ride in a single-file line on the right side of the road, make a complete stop at stop

signs and intersections, and walk bikes across busy streets. Drivers aren’t the only ones whose distractions can be deadly. While a rowdy travel-buddy, a cell phone, a video game, or a forgotten homework assignment may vie for pedestrians’ attention, paying attention to the sidewalks, roads, and directions from school crossing guards take priority – always. So as you ease back into the school year, make sure that with alarm clocks, homework, and afterschool activities, you add everyday traffic safety to your weekday routine. PN

S O L A R E C L I P S E 2017 By Peter Roos

On Monday, August 21, 2017 for a few minutes early in the hot summer afternoon, the sun will be completely blocked from the earth by the moon for up to 2½ minutes in an 80-mile wide swath from Oregon over Casper, Wyoming; Grand Island, Nebraska; Nashville, Tennessee & Columbia, South Carolina. This is the first total eclipse over the US mainland in 38 years.

Accommodations in the “swath of totality” have been reserved for months in advance. We were looking in January and there was little available. If you know someone who lives in or near the swath, it might be the time to invite yourself for a visit. Many communities are planning events surrounding the eclipse. One of the amazing things about a total eclipse is that you can see the stars, but they are not the stars you see at night. They are the stars they see at night halfway around the world. It is our winter sky. An observatory in the swath might offer some unique perspective.

The last one was February 26, 1979 over the northern US & southern Canada. Since the sun is 400 times the size of the moon and roughly 400 times farther from earth, they appear the same size when viewed from earth.

The next eclipse is coming much sooner than we had to wait for this one. Seven years from now on April 8, 2024, the swath of totality will arc from Texas through Buffalo, NY and eastern Canada.

On the infrequent occasions that their paths totally eclipse the sun from earth, the path of totality is the place to be. We almost got the urge to be there too late.

For further details, check out the NASA site eclipse2017.nasa.gov which is planning to provide viewing of the eclipse online live from various locations in the swath of totality.

Shine Mural Festival October 5-14

By Nanette Wiser Bringing new murals and vibrant special events to our City of the Arts, the SHINE St. Petersburg Mural Festival has announced it will return for its third year bringing international artists from around the world as well as local muralists, such as the amazing Vitale Bros. In addition to featured artists such as Hueman from Los Angeles, Waone from Ukraine and Alex Yanes from Miami, there will be a locals-only wall, gallery exhibitions, bike tours and community projects. “Murals are reflective of a city that takes pride in its community,” says Shine Director and Co-Curator Leon Bedone (known as Tes One).

Arts Is Big Business More than 150 community leaders gathered in July to discuss the positive impact of Pinellas County’s arts and cultural organizations on our lifestyle, economy, education, workforce and health. The Regional Arts Summit is the first countywide collaboration among the five arts agencies serving the creative community with information, resources and ideas. The research and report, Arts and Economic Prosperity® 5, was conducted by Americans for the Arts, the nation’s nonprofit organization for advancing the representing and serving local communities and creating opportunities for arts in America. Established in 1960, they are dedicated to every American to participate in and appreciate all forms of the arts. The St. Petersburg Arts Alliance and Creative Pinellas joined forces to focus on

In 2016, community projects included this mural by Creative Clay student Ali Vasquez with teaching artist Todd Frain at Academy of Ballet Arts at 29th St and 1st Ave N. St. Pete. Lots of amazing locals also helped make this one happen including the support of Hal Freedman and Willi Rudowsky! The festival, which received widespread media accolades in its first year, is a non-profit public art project built in partnership between local artists and community members. SHINE illuminates the power of art in public spaces by revitalizing areas, inspiring dialogue, and uniting the St. Petersburg community. Keep checking Facebook @ShineOnStPete for more information.

the economic impact of the arts for Pinellas County. The Arts Alliance conducted nearly 800 countywide audience intercept and organizational surveys throughout 2016, and examined budgets of non-profit cultural organizations for analysis by American for the Arts Economic Prosperity. The Clearwater Arts Alliance, North Pinellas Cultural Alliance and Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture and the Arts joined with the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance & Creative Pinellas to present the study’s results at the Regional Arts Summit Maximizing the Arts Economic Impact for Pinellas County on July 21, 2017. John Collins kicked off the meeting, welcoming guests and dignitaries, including County Commissioners Ken Welch and Karen Seel and leaders of most of the area’s museums arts organizations. Collins introduced the keynote speaker, Randy Cohen, VP of Research and Policy

at Americans for the Arts, the nation’s advocacy organization for the arts. Cohen presented the results of the Arts & Economic Prosperity Study, a key driver for raising the profile of the arts within communities and highlighting powerful economic contribution that the non-profit arts sector makes to tourism, employment and attracting young workers who want to live in a vibrant cultural community.

The Arts Is Big Business Only non-profit arts and cultural organizations were surveyed for this study. Surprisingly, these organizations represent $241 million industry in Pinellas County that supports 7,221 full-time equivalent jobs and generates $29.8 million in local and state government revenue. “Too often, we think of the arts as a charity, when in fact it’s a business with income that trickles down to all sectors of business in the county,” says Cohen. “We all know it improves

Tarpon Springs

Focus of New Film

If you noticed film crews in Tarpon Springs this summer, you might also have seen writer-directors’ and sisters Koula Sossiadis Kazista and Katina Sossiadis’ working on their first feature, EPIPHANY, an ensemble drama. EPIPHANY follows the story of Luka, a young girl desperate to connect with her negligent father in a Greek sponge diving town in Florida. While also struggling in her relationship with her pill-addicted uncle, Luka befriends an older man and slowly uncovers her family’s mysterious past. EPIPHANY is a story of familial love. This story lives on the sea and in the hearts of simple, hard-working people who struggle to maintain the important traditions of the past while striving for happiness in the present moment.

“As young adults, inspired by our personal experiences, we developed a script showcasing the town of Tarpon Springs and the intricacies of this small, tight-knit community and its extraordinary commitment to preserving Greek tradition. Growing up with a Greek immigrant father it was the only place that our father became fully alive, where he felt like he was home again,” says writer-directors’ Koula Sossiadis Kazista and Katina Sossiadis. “Epiphany is the next phase of our love story. Set around the transcending EPIPHANY celebration, which is an experience so cinematic and beautiful that it begs to be on screen, EPIPHANY is a character-driven tribute to the traditions, culture and struggles so unique to Greek-Americans.” The drama’s cast features: Caitlin Carmichael (WHEELMAN, 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE, DEXTER); Alex Dimitriades (THE SLAP, THE INFINITE MAN, GHOST SHIP); George Georgiou (GAME OF THRONES, MAMA MIA, THE MUMMY); Scottie Thompson (12 MONKEYS, STAR TREK, THE BLACKLIST); Burt Young (ROCKY, CHINATOWN, ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA). EPIPHANY will be the second film the writer-director duo has completed together, the first being a short film entitled LYNN’S WAKE in 1999. The film was globally well received at several film festivals. The film is scheduled to be complete in 2018.

Arts Is Big Business cont’d our quality of life, but it also improves the financial health of a community.” Think of it this way, pointed out Cohen. He and his go on a date to the theater, spend money on a new tie his wife has purchased for him to go out, the theater tickets, gas for the car, dinner before the theater, parking and at the theater, a drink and t-shirt. That supports the businesses and also the folks that work in them—from bartender to parking valet, the printer and graphic designers who worked on the program, the banks and e-commerce folks who processed the ticket payment. “The arts are a powerful tool that help communities thrive while educating and enriching,” said Bill Goede, Tampa Bay market president for Bank of America, an Arts Summit sponsor. “The study and the Arts Summit help quantify and disseminate the value of a thriving arts county and will be useful in ensuring that our creative industries are sustained.”

The Arts Stimulate Tourism The arts attract tourists with spending dollars. “70% of all people that come for arts events and festivals are non-locals,” says Cohen. “When the city and county and state invest in the arts, they are investing in a product that benefits the local economy.” Non-resident attendees spent an average of 51 percent more per person than local attendees ($42.43 vs. $28.07) as a result of their attendance to cultural events. As would be expected from a traveler, higher spending was typically found in the categories of lodging, meals, and transportation. When a community attracts cultural tourists, it harnesses significant economic rewards. The Arts Improve Quality of Life It’s no surprise to the community. In fact, 83% of people surveyed said the arts is good for business, and 87% said it improves the quality of life.

Here’s what you might not know. The artsimproves academic performance and strengthens the health of a community. A UCLA researcher looked at 25,000 students. For those who participated in the arts, they had a better grade point average and a better attitude towards community engagement. For lower income students, the impact of the arts on their lives showed even a higher rate of improvement, which underscores the importance of funding arts programs and education in these schools. In healthcare, arts and music have been shown to reduce the length of hospital stays, reduced the use of pain and anxiety medications, reduced depression and improved recovery times. It could be a harpist or guitarist playing music. “Perhaps it’s not so odd that Apollo was the God of both music and healing,” quipped Cohen. ARTS & CULTURE

Florida CraftArt: 501 Central Avenue downtown St. Pete 727-821-7391 http://www.floridacraftart.org/

Efforts Continue When St. Petersburg City Theatre found itself overwhelmed by bills in 2016, the beloved arts organization was forced to cancel its 2016-17 season line-up. The community was not prepared to lose this cultural gem. Since the St. Petersburg City Theatre opened in 1925 as the Sunshine Players, it has enhanced the lives of actors and audience alike. As the theater’s mission states, “St. Petersburg City Theatre aims to enrich the individual lives and collective spirit of our diverse population through community-produced productions and educational experiences.” So the fans clapped their hands & organized #SAVECITYTHEATRE campaign, which has gained momentum in the last few months to revitalize and re-launch the theater group. The volunteers efforts are making a difference. Nick Schriver, owner of the Tampa landscape lighting company Decorating Elves, for example, and his team are using outdoor lighting to help transform the theater’s appeal and aesthetic appearance. Decorating Elves is proud to be donating all of the materials, time, and manpower to create a “lighting face lift” in the hopes of creating new interest for the theatre. Watch for auditions for “ A Christmas Carol “. Want to help? Become a member today at www.spcitytheatre.org for as little as $20!

24th Annual

G r e at B a y S C A L LO P S E A RC H

Tierra Verde – Tampa Bay Watch is recruiting volunteer boats to participate in the Great Bay Scallop Search, Saturday, August 26. The event is a resource monitoring program where community volunteers snorkel to search for scallops in select areas within Boca Ciega and Lower Tampa Bay. The event has been conducted annually since 1993 with the goal to monitor and document the health and status of the local bay scallop population. Tampa Bay Watch aims to have 40 volunteer boaters with more than 180 participants at search selected sites for the elusive bay scallops. Volunteers with shallow draft boats are needed for the event. Go to tampabaywatch.org for more information. Some years, volunteers find many scallops and other years they don’t. Factors that may affect the scallop population include water quality, red tide, high rainfall and storms. An all-time high for the event was 674 scallops, found in 2009. Bay scallops, disappeared from Tampa Bay in the early 1960s when the bay water was highly polluted from dredging operations and industrial and municipal wastes. Tampa Bay’s water quality and

seagrass beds have since improved to levels that will once again support the bay scallop population. In fact, a 2014 research by Southwest Florida Water Management District’s Surface Water Improvement and Management Program states that Tampa Bay now supports 40,295 acres of seagrass beds, an equivalent amount of seagrass measured as in the 1950s. Reservations required for the Great Bay Scallop Search. Registered scallop searchers will meet Saturday, August 26 at 9 am at the Fort De Soto Boat Ramp in Tierra Verde to receive survey equipment and instructions for the monitoring event. At each site, a weighted transect line 50 meters in length is laid along seagrass beds. Snorkelers count scallops along each side of the transect line, within one meter of each side, creating a 100 square meter survey area. The 2016 Scallop Search is sponsored by the Sea World Busch Gardens Conservation Fund and the Tampa Bay Estuary Program. For more information on events, volunteering or becoming a member, call 727-867-8166 or visit www.tampabaywatch.org

Manatees Courtesy of Tampa Bay Watch As you enjoy our beautiful Tampa Bay and surrounding waters be mindful of boating speed zones to protect manatees. Although the manatee species’ status was changed from endangered to threatened in March of 2017, there was a record number of manatees killed in Florida by boaters in 2016, so it’s imperative to obey speed zones. Manatee protection rules are established by Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to restrict the speed and operation of vessels to protect manatees from being injured. Other tips for boaters from FWC include: • using marked channels when boating. • Manatees have shown signs that they avoid heavy boat traffic areas. • Wear polarized sunglasses while operating a boat to make it easier to see an object beneath the surface and the “swirling” that occurs when manatees dive. • Give a proper lookout when boating to be aware of what is in front of or near your vessel.

Always look out for wildlife, other boaters, dive flags, swimmers or other obstructions while on the water. Today’s estimated population of 6,620 Florida manatees is a dramatic turnaround from the 1970s, when just a few hundred individuals remained, but it’s still crucial to obey speed zones to protect them from injury and death. You can help make a difference by participating in coastal cleanup events and recycling monofilament fishing line. Tampa Bay Watch organizes three large-scale Coastal Cleanups per year and sees these projects as an important way to locally deal with an international problem. Cleaning up human-generated trash as well as marine debris that floats onto the shorelines from Tampa Bay and Gulf of Mexico protects wildlife from unnecessary injury or death. Fishing line can take over 500 years to decompose. So improper disposal continues to pose a threat to wildlife for a very long time. Tampa Bay

Watch has 175 fishing line recycling stations or “monotubes” around Tampa Bay to encourage the proper disposal of line. In 2016, with the help of volunteers, 434 miles of line was collected and sent (93 pounds of line) to Berkley Fishing Conservation Institute to be recycled into fishing equipment or artificial fish habitats. Learn more on how you can make a difference in protecting and restoring Tampa Bay by visiting tampabaywatch.org. Tampa Bay Watch is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) stewardship program dedicated exclusively to the charitable and scientific purpose of protecting and restoring the marine and wetland environments of the Tampa Bay estuary encompassing over 400 square miles of open water and 2,300 square miles of highly- developed watershed. Tampa Bay Watch involves more than 10,000 youth and adult volunteers each year in hands-on-habitat restoration projects.

John’s Pass Boardwalk, Madeira Beach HubbardsMarina.com In Shore Snook are absolutely loaded up inside John’s Pass right now, the gators side of the pass along the seawalls multiple anglers are catching a dozen plus each night. Since the water is so warm in the bay it seems the incoming tide has them excited as the cooler water along the beaches rolls into the passes. Many snook are found along the beaches during the day but at night they seem to stack up in the passes. Trout are still biting well inside the pass along the deeper grass flats some big trout are being spotted now towards the back of the pass along the Jungle Prada seawalls and around Dog Leg Key. Redfish action along the oyster bars is steady but chumming will help get them excited. It’s easy to get the flats alive this time of year by throwing a few handfuls of dead white bait out. Get a bunch in the net and keep some alive and let the rest sit in a bucket. Set up on an area and sling some of the dead baits out over the area and then hold on tight! Near Shore The hogfish bite has slowed pretty good nearshore but we’re still picking at them, the hot water definitely has them more leader shy than ever. However, the red grouper action has heated up for us around the 60-80 foot mark you can get plenty of action and pick through the shorts to get a few keepers but out in the 90-120 foot stuff you can get your keeper reds easily if you’re sticking and moving. This time of year the red grouper are out over the swiss cheese style hard bottom scavenging along the bait schools so drifting is the easiest method to fill the box up with some big firetruck red grouper. Don’t forget the flat lines though the tuna and cobia are still around more so cobia than tuna but you just never know. Offshore Red snapper season has come to a close for the federally permitted for-hire fleet which includes us at Hubbard’s Marina. However, there’s plenty more fish in the sea we have gag grouper, red grouper, mangroves, mutton and tons more to target until the end of the year when it all resets. We had a killer red snapper season overall landing big numbers of

nice sized snapper. The gag grouper bite has gone okay, but we expect it to even get better and better as the fall sets in. Keep in mind the best months for gag grouper fishing end in ER. Wahoo are still around offshore but lately the cobia and tuna have been more frequent visitors of our offshore fishing boats out of John’s Pass. by Sarah Lyons - Sirius S Syst ǯ ¢ ǯ ȱȊȱŝŘŝǯřŚŝǯŚŝřŝ “Get Sirius S about Yo Your Futurre” August & September Astrology 2017 August: An action packed August begins with a Full Sturgeon Moon in Aquarius on the 7th, that is a Lunar Eclipse! This is a powerful energy that will surface with action oriented, progressive plans that result in major changes for every sign! On the 12th, our little trickster Mercury will station retrograde for the next three weeks in Virgo; sign of details and service. You may have already felt the shadow’s influence as this time to wind down and REdo, REview, and REconnect approaches! Remember not to make major decisions or purchases now; but to let go and clear away for the new to come to you; whether it be in your home, work or relationship or health areas! In fact this is a wonderful time to REview a wellness plan and get back on track after the summer fun! Fiery Mars is enjoying it’s transit in Leo; giving generously, expressing warmth and boosting confidence in this sign of great splendor! The New Moon in Leo on the 21st is a Total Solar Eclipse which can be seen in it’s totality across the USA! From Oregon on down diagonally across the country to South Carolina, the moon will cast a shadow blocking the sunlight when it moves between the Earth and Sun! This powerful celestial phenomena will have profound personal and global effects; especially here in America where it can be seen! The Sun enters Virgo on the 22nd to direct our attention to details; but when Venus visits Leo on the 25th, we will have a hard time resisting the dramatic and luxurious desires it brings!

September: The last three weeks of summer begin as action planet Mars visits industrious Virgo on the 5th. This is a great time to focus energy on practical duties and needs. On the same day, just hours later, Mercury will begin to move forward; ending its retrograde phase. When it joins Mars on the 9th a time of attention to details and planning will be put into action for the rest of this month! A Full Corn Moon in Pisces lights up the sky on September 6th bringing out an amazing amount of creative and intuitive influences! Topics that surface will see opportunity for change as our imagination and ideas can transform and challenge us to find solutions. 60

Love planet Venus is ardent and romantic while travelling through Leo; but on the 19th she brings her beauty and popularity to discriminating Virgo. High standards are the focus now as the planet of love gets practical; and by joining Mercury and Mars, the influences are all directed to a no nonsense approach to whatever we do. A New Moon also in Virgo on the 20th gets us ready and organized for this lunar cycle to take us into the fall! On the 22nd when the Sun enters Libra and brings the first day of Autumn, the season of change and harvest will be beginning as we transition from summer and prepare for winter! Mercury enters Libra on the 29th helping us weigh the pros and cons of all decisions going forward. There are only nine more days for Libras to enjoy their Jupiter transit as it will not be back in this sign for eleven years! Count your blessings lovely Libras they have been many!

LEO: August: Relationships get Eclipse energized to a new level now! Enjoy private time. Review values and finances. You are ready for action!
