Volume 24 Number 1 • January 2017

Happy 2018!

_________________________________________

By the time you read this, 2018 will be well under way, so there is no sense dwelling on what happened last year, like many other publications love to do at year end. Paradise NEWS prefers to present a brighter future rather than to relive the past. Every new day is the first day of the rest of your life. Each new year can be an opportunity to start fresh, to look forward with enthusiasm to what can be ahead. New Years can also be an opportunity to make changes in ourselves that will improve our outlook on other, to have a more positive impact on everyone we meet. If you can add cheer to the lives of others as you go through your day, to treat everyone you encounter the way you want to be treated, you will be surprised at how it makes you feel. You will see this theme throughout this issue. For example, in his letter to the editors, photographer Clyde Butcher asks that you “Care for your planet” and “spread joy and love… one of the greatest gifts you can give to the world.” Also on page 9 are some of the most memorable quotes from the great mahatma Ghandi, including “Be the change you want to see” and “an eye for an eye can make the world blind.”

GulfPorT Neighbors donate to operation santa

On December 12th, Gulfport Neighbors presented the City of Gulfport, $1550.00 collected at the Holiday Hoopla event on Dec. 9th. This, combined with their preevent check of $500.00, brought their total donation to $2050.00 for the exclusive use of "Operation Santa". Margarete Tober, Gulfport Neighbors President, said "We are beyond delighted to make this donation. It was a cold, windy and wet day, yet the community came through with great generosity. They not only helped us reach the total goal we set of $1500 but to exceed it. We also collected a plethora of toys which we estimate to value $1000 - 1200, if not more." Tober further stated, "thank you to Chief Vincent and the Gulfport Police Department for bringing Christmas cheer once again to the less fortunate children in our community"

Pinellas County employees rolled out 126 new bicycles down the hall and steps of the County Courthouse, Clearwater. Bikes went to deserving families that have been identified through the county’s Human Services department, including customers of the Family Housing Assistance Program, the Personal Enrichment through Mental Health Services Holiday Lane Market Place Program, and Duval Park, a community for veterans with disabilities and their families. Now in its 31st year, the bicycle drive is a team project led by the Pinellas County Real Estate Management department and supported through donations made by Pinellas County government employees. This year, more than $11,000 was donated. Photo courtesy of Pinellas County Marketing & Communications

Letters Dear Peter & Renee,

As I sit on our porch listening to Christmas music I marvel at the beauty of our world. The clouds are changing colors from white to pink to purple as the setting sun gives us the gift of another glorious sunset. And, the trees are dancing to the beat of the music as the wind gently blows their branches, then a lone white egret opens its wings and drifts down to a branch. I am in wonder of our world. I hope this New Year brings a deep consciousness to you about the fragility of the world around us and that you respond by making this year your year to make positive steps in helping the earth survive the impact humanity is making on it. Along with the caring for our world, I hope the New Year brings you smiles and laughter, as well as the wonderful ability to become more gracious to others. Spreading joy and love into the world is one of the greatest gifts you can give to the world. Have a wonderful 2018 ~ Happy New Year! Clyde Butcher everglades Photographer I wanted to thank you for mentioning Resort Realty in the December issue of the Paradise News. It was a nice follow up on our story in the beginning of the year. Publishers: This firm represents Mike and Terri Finnerty with regard to their claims against American Legion Post 305 in St. Pete Beach. With regard to the “hearing” mentioned in your recent story, please find attached, a transcript of the initial phase of the proceedings. The “hearing” was adjourned shortly after jury selection.

A new date for the continued “hearing” has not yet been set by Post 305. A review of the transcript clearly indicates that Tom DeYampert took it upon himself, without any authority from Post 305 or the Legion District, to “prosecute” Mike Finnerty.

In addition, the acting Judge Advocate for the “hearing” clearly ruled that Mike Finnerty was still Commander of the Post until such time as he either resigned, or was removed from office as a result of the “hearing.” Not withstanding that ruling, certain members of the executive board of Post 305 have refused to allow Mr. Finnerty to participate in any meetings, or otherwise carry out his duties as Commander.

I have also attached the Legion’s Rules for Trial, and Officer’s Guide, both of which specify how the Post may act in this matter, as well as the limitations on its actions. I trust the attached will shed some light on the blatant refusal of Post 305 to follow its rules, or those of the American Legion. Christopher M. sierra, esq. www.sierralawfirm.com

The florida fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission FWC received $25,000 in donations for a new 2018 tagged-lionfish removal incentive program Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) gratefully acknowledged donations from six generous sponsors. These funds will go to the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida and will be used as cash prizes for a new and novel lionfish removal incentive program, rewarding harvesters who find and remove lionfish previously tagged by FWC staff. Lionfish are a nonnative invasive species that can reduce native fish populations and negatively affect the overall reef habitat. This program will run May 19 - sept. 3 to coincide with the annual summer-long Lionfish Challenge, which rewards recreational and commercial lionfish harvesters with prizes for submitting their lionfish removal efforts. Sheriff Offers

Teen Citizens Academy From Sheriff Bob Gualtieri

Through extra-curricular activities, youth build stronger relationships not only with their peers, but also with adults who supervise them and act as positive role models aside from their parents.

Just as students learn how to read from their teachers at school, how to make friends from their peers on the playground, and how to swing a bat from their coaches on the field, they can learn how to be involved, upstanding young citizens from their local law enforcement officers.

If they’ve never interacted with a law enforcement officer, the deputy walking around in a pressed green uniform with a badge on his chest and a gun on his hip might seem intimidating, or even threatening. But the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office wants young people to know that not every interaction with law enforcement has to be a bad one. Instilling in children a comfortable familiarity with and understanding about the local organizations that work to keep them safe can steer them toward the path to a bright future.

To that end, the Sheriff’s Office offers a wide variety of extracurricular programs for its youth, including the Sheriff’s Teen Citizens Academy.

The Sheriff’s Teen Citizens Academy is a 6-week program that allows Pinellas County teens the opportunity to take a behind-the-scenes look at the Sheriff’s Office.

The program, a modified version of the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy for adults, is geared toward teens between ages 15 and 18 who have an interest in law enforcement but aren’t able to commit to a long-term educational program or a law enforcement explorer program. Although dragging a teenager out of bed on Saturday mornings can be a struggle, after the first week, Teen Citizens Academy students will be so ready for the next tour, hands-on training, or demonstration that they’ll beat you to the car.

Whether they’re weaving through cones behind the wheel of a patrol cruiser, being guided down the halls of the Pinellas County Jail, or learning how to shoot the same guns Sheriff’s Office deputies are issued, students learn the agency’s ins and outs from more than what they see in movies, on television, or in the news.

At the conclusion of the academy, students attend a graduation ceremony with Sheriff Bob Gualtieri and several agency members at the Sheriff’s Administration Building.

Registration for the next Sheriff’s Teen Citizens Academy class (scheduled for Saturdays from February 3 through March 10) is due January 19, so complete your teen’s applications today!

St. Pete Beach features several miles of “sugar sand,”, from the popular Beach at Pass-a-Grille at the city’s south end, (1st Ave to 22nd Ave) north to lesser known Upham Beach at the mouth of Blind Pass. (67th – 69th Ave) Upham Beach was donated to the city decades ago, likely due to its propensity to wash away, especially after condos were built, likely too close to the shore for mother nature to approve. To lessen the severity and frequency of erosion, and the cost of “nourishment,” a groin structure has been tested since 2005 to help stabilize the shore, in itially using huge yellow sand bags

(geotubes). Deemed a successful experiment by a University of South Florida study in 2009, these temporary groins are being replaced by permanent rock groins. The contractor, Weeks Marine has been transporting barges of huge rocks down the Mississippi and across the Gulf of Mexico for the project, which was expected to be complete by now, but the $9.5 million job is only about half complete, and has been temporarily halted due to worries about winter storms in the Gulf. So, Upham Beach is open once more, if only temporarily.

Pass-a-Grille Way rolls Phase II of the Pass-A-Grille Way (PAGW) road reconstruction project is moving along at a brisk pace with dozens of material and construction submittals being approved by the design team. Gibbs & Register will mobilize to the construction lay down yard starting January 2nd with equipment and materials ready to get to work. The first activity we will see is the installation of traffic detour signs. Also starting in the first week in January the contractor will mill up the existing asphalt road and mix it in with the sub-base, curb to curb, the entire way from 19th Ave to 1st Ave. The mix will be re-compacted to establish a suitable driving surface for all areas where residents and visitors need to drive and park. There are several reasons for doing this; by homogenizing the material there is no need to cut asphalt as trenching in the utility pipes progresses. That will make the trenching process much easier. Also, by disturbing the surface early in the project, we will uncover any unforeseen sight conditions that may exist. The contractor will have plenty of

time to correct any condition found and keep the project on schedule. Details on the Detour Plan show that 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th Avenues are all open to normal traffic after the surface is milled & compacted. Parking along the east and west side of PAGW between 6th Ave and 10thAve will remain as is during this phase of the project. The city inspector and contractor will work with each property owner that has a driveway on PAGW to insure everyone has vehicle access to their properties. Residents on the east side of PAGW between 12th Ave and 19th Ave will have continuous access to cross the street to get onto their property. Mail and other deliveries will have access to everyone at all times.

Real Estate Know Before Selling or Buying by Jim “Property Wizard” Beggins, Broker, Century 21 Beggins Enterprises “To do better, know better”. Do you know the differences between our 17 barrier island communities? When you do, you’ll make more informed decisions. Think about them: Tierra Verde, Isla Del Sol, Pass a Grille, St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island, Sunset Beach, Madeira Beach, Redington Beach, N. Redington Beach, Redington Shores, Indian Shores, Indian Rocks Beach, Belleair Beach, Sand Key, Clearwater Beach, N. Clearwater Beach, and finally Island Estates.

All 17 have unique features, advantages, benefits, lifestyles and price points. Many have different investment rules and rental restrictions. Some are better to raise a family in, while others are more commercial or hotel oriented. You can google the towns you are interested in and read their story before you decide to buy or sell.

Many of us don’t know what makes each town unique. “Under all is the land”. Barrier Island land prices are higher and appreciate faster than mainland prices. I offer you this current land‐pricing example. A 50 by 100‐foot lot on the mainland is $20,000. Move the same lot to

a beach town, not on water and it jumps to $200,000. Move it to a canal and it’s $400,000. Finally, move the same 50’ by 100’ lot to the Gulf of Mexico and its $1,500,000 or $30,000 per beach‐front foot. These prices change with the size of the lot being evaluated. Many of these basic prices may include an old house. Because of new building restrictions and increasing flood insurance it’s sometimes unwise to put too much money into an old house. If you own one, you can get an interest only construction, permanent loan with no money down and interest only payments until your dream house is completed.

A great real estate agent has the ability to gather and transmit knowledge to clients and to negotiate the best price. Make sure that the agent you choose can demonstrate this knowledge, or you’ll be leaving money on the table whether you’re selling or buying.

Our weekly “REAL BEACH TALKS” address any barrier Island concerns of sellers, buyers, renters, visitors and agents. Now you can join us online each Tues. from 4‐5PM or come in person to 5050 Gulf Blvd. in St. Pete Beach.

Go to C21wizard.com. No log in required. Go on anytime to find past videos. Send me any questions you may have about our barrier is‐ lands which you’d like addressed. If you’d like to be part of a town development focus group, contact me. The purpose would be to create a unique story about each of our beach towns for visitors, sellers, buyers and agents to showcase variety along our 27 miles of beautiful Gulf beaches. All the best, Jim “Property Wizard” Beggins, Broker, CENTURY 21Beggins Enterprises, with 10 offices and 400 agents serving Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee and Sarasota Counties. Since most opinions about real estate can be supported with facts. I will inform you to the best of my ability so you can unconfuse the facts to your personal advantage. Construction Tax Reform Act…. How Might It Affect Pinellas Home Sales? by Tom Smith It was certainly a long battle in Washington, but Federal Tax Reform was approved by Congress and will go into effect for Americans in 2018. Whether or not you approved of this legislation, this tax reform bill will definitely have an impact upon Pinellas home sales.

Just what effect might the new tax act have to motivate consumers to buy Florida real estate now? For one thing, the Baby Boomers born from the 1946‐1964 are coming to Florida in record numbers. Did you notice the large increase in traffic each year these past few tourist seasons? This demographic group has generally delayed their retirement, years beyond past generations. They are healthier and have much more spendable income than past generations. For many, it’s just plain time to relax and enjoy their retirement years. What better place than the beautiful beach communities along Pinellas County.

Also fueling the home buying surge is somewhat due to the new tax law not allowing a deduction for states with high state income taxes. We are hearing that statement weekly at our model home. These customers are already tired of being burdened by state income taxes which Florida doesn’t have (absolutely no state income tax

in Florida!), but now they can’t even deduct that excess state tax from their federal income tax. Straw on the camel’s back some say! Two other factors come into play now that 2018 is upon us. Every customer that is considering a new Florida home is reading about how prices will increase due to the harsh hurricane season that we just witnessed. There is only so much capacity to manufacture more plywood, sheetrock, doors, windows, etc., and due to the Supply & Demand equation, prices might rise a good deal for the coming year. That $600,000 new home could easily cost $660,000 in another year. People understand that reality. Also, many or our customers are also remarking about their percentage increase in their IRA’s and Pension Plans this past year. One of our customers that we met yesterday was touting a 18% increase in their retirement fund in 2017, much higher than they ever realized with the low increases these past 10 years. Their comment was “We are ready to enjoy the American Dream due to our savings from their IRA’s”. America, what a country!!

No matter what side of the isle you favor in Washington, the United States economy and stock market are both in very strong positive directions for Americans. Pension Plans and IRA’s are at record levels, with more spendable income in the pockets of Americans than ever before. Coupled with more cash in their hands with each pay check, even working families are feeling confident about purchasing a new home. Just maybe early 2018 will prove to be the best time to buy a modern new energy efficient home, raised to FEMA standards, with all the new Florida building codes protecting against hurricanes. Hey…. maybe it’s time for a New Year’s Resolution to finally buy the home of your dreams!! Trusts & Taxes Stay On Track With the Internal Revenue Service Many taxpayers live in fear of the Internal Revenue Service, and any type of notice or contact from the IRS causes them major distress. It is really unnecessary to live in such fear, but wise to heed some simple practices that can W keep you, the taxpayer, off the IRS’ radar screen.

The most egregious offense that can be commitof those benefits, ted by a taxpayer is theOne under-reporting (or anon-reporting) of income. The IRS takes this very seriously, and if they receive information that an individual or business owner is trying to hide income, a criminal investigation can result. Businesses who normally receive cash payments are especially susceptible to investigations. To stay out of trouble with the IRS in this area, make sure that you as a taxpayer, especially a business owner, report all income. Cash collected from the sale or products or services in a business IS income. There is no amount or percentage It is not necessaryof cash that can be legally skimmed. Diverting payt ments that should be made to the business without counting them as income is another prohibited practice. Gifts from family or other individuals The benefit, once the claimant or loans received by an individual or business are inot income, and do not need to be counted, but should be documented, in case of an audit, to prove to the IRS that these were not income.

TOverstatement of deductions is also another

problem area. The IRS, in an audit, can disallow Theornext step is expenses that are un-documented, are not

appropriate items to deduct. The IRS allows a business to deduct all expenses that are ordinary t and necessary for that type of business. Individuals may deduct all allowable items, such Anestate honorable, as mortgage interest, real taxes, medical, charitable o contributions, among others. In the Veterans event of an w the IRS usually requires proof of payment audit, Some veterans who of such expenses (cancelled check or credit card s receipt), as well as a vendor receipt. If the IRS finds that these are missing, or if the expense I not appropriate for the taxpayer, they can is disallow the expense. Taxpayers who keep appropriate documentation have nothing to fear in the event of an audit.

If you receive an IRS notice in the mail, do not panic, and do not simply pay the notice without checking its validity. Most IRS notices are based upon facts that are not accurate or complete, and usually can be resolved simplyThis by providing the is based upon IRS with appropriate documentation. We assist a report completed by the claimant’s physician our clients with dealing with their IRS notices, and i most of them end up being resolved without any additional payment to the IRS by the taxpayer.

If the IRS calls you on the telephone, THIS IS PROBABLY A SCAM. There is a prevalent scam that is currently being run that is very convincing. It starts with a phone call from “THE IRS” to a There guide taxpayer, telling them that they owe are a past due l balance, and must pay it immediately, over the phone, or they will risk jail, deportation, or other

unpleasant consequence. If you receive such a call, just hang up, and do not give the caller any identifying information. The IRS does not call taxpayers to report that they have overdue There is balances. This is only done by mail.

n

If you receive a visit from the IRS, take it very seriously and call an attorney immediately. If the IRS gives you indication that there is a criminal investigation, you have the same “Miranda” rights that you hear about on TV crime shows. You do not have to speak to the agent, and you have the right to an attorney. It is best to call an attorney right away, and not attempt to handle this type of matter on your own.

It is always best to do the right thing when it Even better, comes to reporting your taxable income, taking tdeductions, and filing your tax returns on time. It is also vital to keep appropriate records so you can C prove that you did the right thing if the IRS inquires. BEATLEMANIA

Gulfport Casino, January 20th, 2018 by Peter Roos

show promoter Tony Belmont is flying the L.A . cast of Beatlemania to the Gulfport Casino for a single show on January 20. Tony is the protege’ of alan freed, who started the rock & roll concert phenomena at 10PM, March 21st, 1952, in Cleveland, Ohio. Tony, who still maintains an office in Times Square but spends winters in Pinellas, says “The entire event is bankrolled by a generous benefactor, and all tickets sold directly benefit the Gulfport Chamber of Commerce.” Chamber leaders wanted to sell out their New Years Eve party before they began promoting this concert, so word is late to get out, and $30 tickets were just beginning to be sold at press time. Tony told Paradise NEWS that 500 performers were auditioned for Beatlemania in Los Angeles. These four were chosen because they looked, played and sounded the most authentic. “Beatles fans will feel like the original Beatles are back, performing in the cozy venue on the north shore of Boca Ciega Bay” Tony continued. Tickets are available at the Chamber Welcome Center, 3101 Beach Blvd S #1, Gulfport, 33707 and chamber president Barry Rubin said an Eventbrite Listing would be established for those who cannot make it during the chamber’s hours 9 - 5 M-Sat.,11 - 3 Sundays.

It will be a three, act show divided into two 45 Minute Presentations, with a 15 minute intermission. The entire show will run 1 hour & 45 minutes and perhaps an encore, but that's up to the artists that time. Dancing will be allowed and a space will be left available for dancing during the show. This is not a local tribute act but the national touring group. Tony Belmont will produce and MC the show. He was part of the original touring show in NYC in 1978. act 1- The early days and the beginning of the Beatles with their early great hits! act 2 & 3 Takes the audience from the days of Sgt. Pepper and the psychedelic era to the Abbe Road album. There is a costume change from the Sgt. Pepper album cover look to the Abbe Road songs. This is accomplished smoothly by leaving one member on stage and switching costumes quickly. These are seasoned actors, musicians /singers, which is why they are the national touring company. if you like the Beatles and their music, this is as close as it gets to the original group. As a point of interest Tony’s 1957 white Cadillac was used for their US tour. His early partner, the late Clay Cole, had the Beatles and the rolling stones on his show the only time the two great groups ever appeared together.

Stem Cell treatments using the patient’s own living stem cells are providing surgery-free pain relief for tens of thousands of patients that would otherwise have to endure major orthopedic surgeries. However, physicians specialized in this field of Interventional Regenerative Orthopedics are growing more and more concerned about the confusion and misinformation associated with stem cell procedures. If you’ve ever wondered if stem cell or platelet therapy might be a good alternative for you or someone you love, this article will help you learn more.

Dr. James Leiber, founder and medical director of Tampa Bay’s New ReGeneration Orthopedics of Florida and former Air Force physician and medical consultant to the president and vice president at the White House, says his patients are benefiting tremendously from stem cell and platelet therapies. For example, greater than 90% of patients with knee arthritis (of all severities) report improvement after a Regenexx stem cell procedure when surveyed at one year and beyond with an average improvement in pain and function at New Regeneration Orthopedics of 60-70%. However, it’s important for the patient and the physician to do their due diligence.

First, the physician has to match the patient with the correct treatment. The best candidates for successful regenerative therapies are active people with shoulder, elbow, hand/wrist, hip, knee, foot/ ankle, and spine problems. Dr. Leiber and his team, which includes Interventional Pain Specialist Dr. Michael Amoroso MD and Sports Medicine specialist Ron Torrance DO, use a careful intake process to determine which patients are most likely to have successful outcomes from stem cell or platelet treatments. Those who are not candidates may be advised to utilize a different treatment strategy, including surgery. Dr. Leiber advises patients to be wary of doctors who say stem cell treatments are for everyone and for every condition. He and his colleagues do a thorough evaluation and provide an honest assessment of each patient’s chances for success, as well as any risks. New ReGeneration Orthopedics is part of a national network known as Regenexx, which developed the patented technology and scientific literature that guides procedures performed by the group. The first orthopedic stem cell injection procedures in the U.S. were performed by Regenexx in 2005. Since then, physicians affiliated with Regenexx have performed more than 57,160 Regenexx procedures and have created half of the world’s published orthopedic ParadisenewsFL.com | january 2018

stem cell research literature. Patients are tracked by a team of professional researchers as part of national database registry collecting data on safety and clinical outcomes. Because this is the only database of its kind, Regenexx has also been able to confirm large cost savings of their procedures when compared to traditional orthopedic surgeries for the same conditions. Regenexx is working with large self-funded insurance companies across the country to get insurance coverage for Regenexx procedures for their employees. See regenexxcorporate.com Regenexx outcome data and research publications are transparently posted on their website – regenexx.com Dr. Leiber was the first to bring Regenexx to Florida in 2012, and New ReGeneration remains the exclusive practice on Florida’s west coast offering this technology. In addition to its focus on using the patient’s own living cells rather than donor cells, Regenexx is built around 8 core principles:

Advanced Imaging and Placement – Very few physicians, including orthopedic surgeons, are trained in the use of advanced ultrasound and fluoroscopy (live X-ray) imaging techniques for diagnosing tissue damage and for guiding placement of the cells into these tissues precisely and safely. By using a “tissue preservation” model rather than surgical, cortisone injection, or narcotic pain prescription models, new sophisticated techniques had to be invented. Regenexx affiliates are among the most highly trained injection specialists in the world.

Five Warning Signs About Amniotic and Cord Stem Cell Therapy Dr. Leiber and all of the Regenexx providers use only your own living bone marrow cells, never amniotic or cord cells. Stating or implying that their amniotic or cord products contain “Live Stem Cells.” The patented Regenexx procedure uses your own living stem cells taken from your bone marrow. Amniotic or cord cell products have been found to 28

Bone Marrow Harvesting Technique - Regenexx uses the highest quality stem cells from the patient’s bone marrow. Techniques for harvesting the bone marrow and isolating the cells in the laboratory are unique to Regenexx and reliably provide 5–20 times higher stem cell counts than what could be obtained via automated bedside centrifuges. Also, contrary to popular belief, bone marrow procedures performed properly under guidance are very tolerable with minimal discomfort during or after the procedure. Dosage – Regenexx physicians use advanced technology to count the stem cells and deliver a precise dose. Total stem cell counts and percentage of living cells are counted for each bone marrow procedure. Platelets and growth factors obtained from the blood or the bone marrow are also isolated to be used with stem cells as part of the treatment protocol. Different tissue types respond better to different concentrations of platelets (often referred to as Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP). But unlike other doctors dabbling in this field, Regenexx’s laboratory techniques allow for individualized treatment plans with platelet counts ranging from 1 to 40 times concentrated as compared to the blood and the ability to keep or remove white blood cells or red blood cells. In a given procedure, there may be many different versions of the PRP used depending on the tissue type and ultimate goal.

contain no living stem cells. Providing bait-and-switch research to support their use of amniotic and cord stem cells rather than bone marrow cells. Because products containing live cells from donors are not approved by the FDA, research data from other countries using live amniotic and cord stem cells do not apply to what is being used in the U.S. Citing outcome statistics for their therapies, but providing no supporting

Anesthesia – Because some local anesthesia can kill stem cells, Regenexx providers use carefully selected drugs during the procedure and utilize various techniques for maintaining patient comfort during a procedure. Research Lab – Regenexx maintains a sophisticated, university-quality lab to constantly study and improve its procedures. There is no other sophisticated lab in the U.S. that is solely focused on this goal. Safety – Regenexx has published the largest and longest research pertaining to the safety of orthopedic stem cell procedures. Lifestyle modifications - good outcomes are dependent on the health of the

Dead amniotic and cord stem cells cannot grow a new joint or brand-new cartilage. In fact, no stem cells from any source can grow a new joint. When a patient has lost all the cartilage and has nothing left but bone-on-bone, stem cells cannot typically grow new cartilage. Occasionally new

patient’s cells and the environment they are placed into. Individualized advice pertaining to food, medications, supplements, exercise, and other factors is an important part of the protocol in advance of and after the actual procedure. Stem Cell Protocol – For many conditions, especially arthritis related, the Regenexx protocol includes a pre-injection procedure that “tills the soil” in preparation for the actual re-injection of stem cells or “planting the seeds” a few days later and ends with “fertilizer” treatment a few days later. This is a patented protocol. Some people may benefit from platelet procedures periodically to maintain a healthy environment in the joint.

cartilage growth is seen but not consistently. Ligaments and tendons and bone can regenerate with stem cell injections. But, please keep in mind that cartilage itself has no nerve endings and is not usually a source of pain. Patients with severe knee pain and no cartilage can return to high level athletics (even the Ironman) after a Regenexx procedure. Claiming injections of the younger stem cells in the amniotic and cord product will help older stem cells act younger. ParadisenewsFL.com | january 2018

Additionally, Culture-Expanded Stem Cells offer another treatment option for patients. At this time, growing stem cells into much higher quantities for purposes other than laboratory research, such as injecting into human tissue, is not allowed by the FDA in the U.S. However, Regenexx also maintains a world-class laboratory in the Cayman Islands where patients can go and have their stem cells grown and even stored for future use. This process allows for stem cell counts that are 100-1000 times higher than what can be obtained in the U.S., allowing for more potent procedures, higher counts and opening the possibility of treating multiple body regions at the same time. New ReGeneration Orthopedic doctors are licensed in Grand Cayman and can provide these procedures for you. Dr. Leiber points out that one of the major sources of patient confusion is due to the various kinds of practices offering widely varied treatments that often lack precision, scientific support, living cells, or all three. “Many practices are using stem cells from fat,” Dr. Leiber said, “The process of obtaining stem cells from fat tissue requires processing steps that violate FDA regulations for use of body tissue for procedures. This is considered to be an unapproved use of a drug. and is illegal for orthopedic use. FDA has drawn a clear line in the sand and medical clinics using this approach are being cited and warned. Also, many practices are offering amniotic or placental type “stem cells.” Please be aware that none of these products actually contained living stem cells when Regenexx tested them. Additionally, if they did contain live stem cells, they would require FDA

approval as a drug, which has never occurred. Doctors are either offering this without knowledge of this or purposely misleading patients. These products do contain growth factors, which can be helpful. However, not as much as a simple Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection which costs about $1,000. Some doctors are charging up to $10,000 - $20,000 for this and injecting it randomly (even without image guidance) into a joint in 5 minutes. It makes me very upset to know that patients are getting taken advantage of and not receiving high-quality, evidenced-based care. It makes us all look bad as well because we get clumped into the same category as everyone else.” He advises patients that are evaluating healthcare providers to do their research. Ask the doctor what the stem cell source is. A valid source for orthopedic use would be your own bone marrow stem cells. Other products made from amniotic or placental tissues and umbilical cord blood from donors do not have living cells. Currently it is not legal to possess or use live amniotic or cord stem cells for clinical use. So, if a doctor tells you they are using products containing live stem cells from donors, you should be very wary. These products might provide some clinical benefit due to their concentration of growth factors, but there really is an absence of research to support using them for orthopedic procedures at this time and certainly not worth the price that these doctors are asking for it. The Regenexx procedure harvests your own stem cells and injects them during the same day, which is permitted by the FDA. Additionally, be wary of providers who are offering stem cell treatments for anything and everything that ails you. This is not a magic panacea for

all diseases. Research is evolving but be careful about treating internal medicine and brain related conditions, with stem cells. Regenexx doctors don’t dabble in treatment of these conditions, the focus and expertise is on orthopedic and some neurologic related conditions. Finally, the procedure should be performed by a licensed MD or DO certified in interventional orthopedics by the Interventional Orthopedic Foundation (IOF), not a physician assistant (PA) or nurse practitioner (NP) or a Chiropractor (DC). They should be using a musculoskeletal ultrasound and advanced live-image fluoroscopy to pinpoint the precise location of the injections. A full surgical setup is needed, including equipment to measure vital signs, as well as oxygen, crash cart and automated defibrillator. If you or someone you love is considering surgery for knee, elbow, foot, ankle, hand, wrist, hip, shoulder or spine pain, visit www.newregenortho.com or call 941-357-1773. The Regenexx procedure is permitted by the FDA, but it is not yet covered by Medicare and many commercial insurance companies. Many self-insured employers are approving the Regenexx procedure as a covered benefit for their employees because they are realizing the tremendous advantages in efficacy, recovery and cost. The New ReGeneration Orthopedics staff is standing by to help you determine if Regenexx is right for you. Dr. Leiber, Dr. Amoroso, and Dr. Torrance are routinely providing seminars around the Tampa Bay area to help patients learn more about these procedures, and those seminars are listed on the New ReGeneration Orthopedics website. For patients who want to stay ahead of their orthopedic problems, New ReGeneration Orthopedic offers a ProActive program that assesses the whole body and plans out a strategy for the year and offers various discounts and benefits. “Our patients tend to be active people of all ages who want to maintain an active lifestyle,” Dr. Leiber adds. “Whether they are playing golf or tennis, running, cycling or playing with children and grandchildren, they count on us to help keep them stay in the game.” PN

For years, the foundations of cancer treatment have been surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. In the last two decades, drugs that target cancer cells have also become standard treatments for many cancers. These drugs work by homing in on specific molecular changes seen primarily in those cells. Most recently, over just the past several years, Immunotherapies—therapies that enlist and strengthen the power of a patient’s immune system to attack tumors—has emerged as what many in the cancer community now call the “fifth pillar of cancer treatment. At the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Carl H. June, M.D., is director of Translational Research at the Abramson Cancer Center. As a specialist in T cell biology and lymphocyte activation, his groundbreaking work has led to remarkable remissions of advanced cancer. He focused on recent and ongoing successes in developing treatments with T cells that have been genetically engineered to target cancer. Called Chimeric Antigen Receptor T cells (CAR T cells), these modified immune cells have proven effective at eliminating cancer in some patients, and offer great hope for this emerging strategy in cancer immunotherapy. New CAR T-cell Therapy - An immunotherapy approach called Adoptive Cell Transfer (ACT) is rapidly emerging. It involves collecting and using a patients’ own immune cells to treat their cancer. There are several types of ACT but the one that is closest to producing a treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is called CAR Tcell therapy. One CAR T-cell therapy was approved in August 2017 by the FDA for the treatment of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). (www.cancer.gov). A second, for adults with advanced lymphomas, may be close behind. In the study, 63 patients received a single dose. The overall remission rate was 82.5% in treated subjects. Forty patients (63%) had complete remission and 12 patients (19%) had complete remission with incomplete hematologic recovery. Researchers caution that, in many respects, it’s the very early days for CAR T cells and other forms of ACT, and there are questions

about whether they will ever be effective against solid tumors like breast and colorectal cancer.

a Possible option Where None Had existed

The initial development of CAR T-cell therapies has focused largely on Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) the most common cancer in children. More than 80% of children diagnosed with ALL that arises in B cells—the predominant type of pediatric ALL— will be cured by intensive chemotherapy. But for patients whose cancers return after chemotherapy or a stem cell transplant, the treatment options are “close to none, said Stephan Grupp, M.D., Ph.D., of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Relapsed ALL, in fact, is a leading cause of death from childhood cancer. Dr. Grupp has led several trials of CAR T cells in children and young adults with ALL that had recurred or was not responding to existing therapies. In one of these earlier trials, which used CD19-targeted CAR T cells, all signs of cancer disappeared (a complete response) in 27 of the 30 patients treated in the study, with many of these patients continuing to show no signs of recurrence long after the treatment. ALL Research is also underway at Shands Children’s Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where William "Dr. Bill" Slayton joined the division in 2002 with a focus on platelet disorders and leukemia. Now the chief of the division of Pediatric Hematology / Oncology, he also chairs the Children's Oncology Group clinical trial AALL0622, His laboratory has interest in how normal and leukemic stem cells interact with the bone marrow microenvironment. Current projects are focused on developing better therapies for Ph+ ALL and Infant Leukemia. What Might MEDICAL MARIJUANA Mean to You?

– A Primer

by Peter A. Roos

Marijuana is the world’s most popular illicit drug, with hundreds of millions of regular users worldwide. One in three Americans has smoked pot at least once. The Drug Enforcement Agency estimates that Americans smoke five million pounds of marijuana each year. And yet marijuana remains largely misunderstood by both its advocates and its detractors. To some, marijuana is an insidious “stepping-stone” drug, enticing the inexperienced and paving the way to the inevitable abuse of harder drugs. To others, medical marijuana is an organic means of easing the discomfort or stimulating the appetite of the gravely ill. Others still view marijuana, like alcohol, as a largely harmless indulgence, dangerous only when used immoderately. All sides of the debate have appropriated the scientific evidence on marijuana to satisfy their claims. Marijuana’s medicinal uses can be traced back as early as 2737 B.C., when the emperor of China, Shen Neng, touted cannabis tea as a treatment for gout, rheumatism, malaria and even poor memory, writes Mitch Earleywine, a professor of psychology at the State University of New York at Albany who researches drugs and addiction, in “Understanding Marijuana: A New Look at the Scientific Evidence” (Oxford University Press, 2005). The drug’s popularity as a medicine spread throughout Asia, the Middle East and then to Africa and India, where Hindu sects used it for pain and stress relief. William O’Shaughnessy, 1809 – 1889, an Irish doctor, popularized medical use of cannabis in England and

America after noting its effects in India. But by the late 1800s, with morphine addiction rampant in the United States, attitudes toward drugs such as marijuana shifted dramatically. As a result, the Food and Drug Administration was formed in 1906. While marijuana wasn’t specifically mentioned in the original FDA guidelines, the move to control chemical substances curtailed its use as treatment. By 1937, the Marijuana Tax Act [sic] imposed such high taxes on physicians prescribing cannabis, retail pharmacists selling cannabis, and those cultivating medical cannabis that it essentially fell out of favor as a treatment.

Health Benefits of Cannabis Medical marijuana is available in several different forms. It can be vaporized, ingested in a pill form or an edible version can be added to foods such as brownies, cookies and chocolate bars. The flowers can also be smoked, though not legally in Florida, at least not yet, until attorney John Morgan wins his pending lawsuit against the state. Because the federal Drug Enforcement Administration still classifies marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug, meaning it has a high potential for abuse and no

legitimate therapeutic uses — it is exceptionally difficult to do high-quality studies on its medicinal effects in the United States, said Donald Abrams, an integrative medicine specialist for cancer patients at the University of California, San Francisco. But the idea that marijuana may have therapeutic effects is rooted in solid science. Marijuana contains 60 active ingredients known as cannabinoids. The body naturally makes its own form of cannabinoids to modulate pain, Abrams said. One study found that cannabinoids with opiates led to dramatic levels of pain relief. (Animal models have found similar effects).“Cannabinoids plus opiates are synergistic in their relief of pain, so that 1+1 = 5 and not 2,”Abrams told Live Science magazine. Researchers at the American Academy of Neurology have also found that medical marijuana in the form of pills or oral sprays seemed to reduce stiffness and muscle spasms in multiple sclerosis (MS). The medications also eased certain symptoms of MS, such as pain related to spasms, and painful burning and numbness, as well as overactive bladder, according to a number of studies. Marijuana may be able to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, a study led by Kim Janda of the Scripps Research Institute suggests. It may ease painful symptoms of multiple sclerosis, a study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal in May suggests. Research from the University of Nottingham shows that marijuana may help protect the brain from damage caused by stroke, by reducing the size of the area affected

by the stroke — at least in rats, mice, and monkeys. The Department of Health and Human Services recently signed off on a proposal to study marijuana’s potential as part of treatment for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. Marijuana is approved to treat PTSD in some states already. In New Mexico, PTSD is the number one reason for people to get a license for medical marijuana, but this is the first time the U.S. government has approved a proposal that incorporates smoked or vaporized marijuana, which is currently classified by the government as a drug with no accepted medical applications. Naturally occurring cannabinoids, similar to THC, help regulate the system that causes fear and anxiety in the body and brain. Medical marijuana is also frequently used to treat nausea induced by chemotherapy, though scientific studies of the smoked form of the plant are limited. Two FDA-approved, chemically altered forms of THC, dronabinol and nabilone, have been shown to reduce chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting in cancer patients, and to help with the symptoms of AIDS, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, June 6, 2017 a well-known effect of marijuana use is the “munchies,” so it has been used to stimulate appetite among HIV/AIDS patients and others who have a suppressed appetite due to a medical condition or treatment. Medical marijuana is also frequently used to treat nausea induced by chemo- therapy, though scientific studies of the smoked form of the plant are limited. Medical marijuana has also been touted as a treatment for glaucoma, which is an elevated pressure in the eyeball that can lead to blindness. While smoking marijuana may reduce intraocular pressure, marijuana must be consumed numerous times during the day to have the desired effect and other drugs are more effective, according to the American Cancer Society. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive component of

marijuana that has therapeutic benefits, but because it does not target the CB1 receptor, it doesn’t leave people feeling stoned. CBD may help prevent cancer from spreading, researchers at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco reported in 2007. A 2012 study published in the journal Translational Psychiatry found that cannabidiol may be effective in treating schizophrenia. In the study at the University of Cologne, 42 patients randomly received either cannabidiol or amisulpride, an effective drug used for the treatment of schizophrenia, for 28 days. Comparison of the clinical effects found “no relevant difference” between the two treatments. A 2014 study by the College of Pharmacy of the University of South Florida find that THC could be helpful in the therapeutic treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, as well.

Medical marijuana “ prescriptions” are termed “recommendations” or “referrals” because of federal laws prohibiting the prescribing of cannabis. A 2016 study on 108 people by the University of Michigan Health System found that marijuana use may make other addictions worse.

Availability

In most states, patients need to fill out the application, pay a fee and provide identification information. To successfully receive an ID card in most states, patients need a signed statement from a doctor diagnosing the condition and a document stating that medical marijuana is the treatment recommended for the patient’s particular condition and situation. Most of the laws allow dispensaries and outline specific conditions for which medical marijuana can be prescribed. The restrictions also vary by state as to the format and amount of medical cannabis that can be obtained at each visit for personal use. Here in the St. Petersburg area there are several practitioners authorized to issue cards that will allow you to access a “Dispensary”, essentially a medical cannabis pharmacy, and there are two facilities open to serve you. Once you have an ID card and a prescription, you can visit the pharmacy, or call them and they will be happy to deliver your order to your door.

Side Effects

Google Florida Medical Cannabis card to find a physician. Generally cards costs $169-$200 + $75 State Fee. (2 6 month follow up visits about $59 each).

Marijuana does have side effects. THC binds to cannabinoid receptors, which are concentrated in areas of the brain associated with thinking, memory, pleasure, coordination and time perception. The effects of marijuana can interfere with attention, judgment and balance. Studies have produced conflicting results on whether smoking marijuana carries a significant cancer risk.

edits, and narrowing focus to perfect the top sketches. This class is part of our ProLab Series: unique elective opportunities for intermediate to advanced improvisers to explore a range of skills that hone improv technique and artistry. Sketch Comedy can still be taken as a one-off experience. We recommend, but do not require completion of Improv Level 2 (or equivalent experience). Neighborhood Cleanup results

832 pounds of trash removed in just 2.5 hours! Tampa Bay Watch is grateful to our hardy volunteers for braving the dreary weather in December by participating in our neighborhood cleanup of Bartlett and Roser Parks in St. Petersburg.

Removed was 832 lbs. of trash in just 2.5 hours with 30 volunteers! This project succeeded in its goal to prevent debris from entering our local waterways to ultimately improve the health of Tampa Bay. Thanks to our partners who helped make it happen: Suncoast Rise Above Plastics Coalition and the City of St. Petersburg.

Areas outside of Pinellas County may be subject to travel charge.

Project: Macdill air force Base

TBW installed 608 oyster domes at MacDill Air Force Base. Thank to our hard working volunteers who assisted with our oyster dome installation at MacDill Air Force Base. Creation of a series of oyster dome fields is an effort to restore lost habitat systems to the bay, prevent further erosion of the shoreline, and improve water quality through natural biological filtration.

dwarf seahorses

Live in the shallow seagrass beds of Tampa Bay. They use their tails to anchor themselves to the seagrass as seen in the picture to the left. Adults only grow to about an inch tall. They have complex social behaviors, usually mating for life. Male seahorses carry the babies and give live birth. Unfortunately, seagrass habitat has been damaged from pollution, boats and changing ocean conditions causing the populations of these little seahorses to decline. Source: biologicaldiversity.org

The Suncoast Quilting Circle (SQC) guild of St. Petersburg is a non-profit group with over 100 members, formed in 1981. They meet five times each month at a convenient location for Paradise NEWS readers, at the Pilgrim Congregational Church, 6315 Central Ave., each Wednesday morning at 10 am and the 3rd Monday of each month at 7 pm. Visitors and new members are welcome any time. Our group is diverse, energetic, friendly, knowledgeable and communityoriented. Many of the more talented members have won prizes and appeared in national publications. They are eager to learn and share new techniques and ideas. Beginning quilters will find the Sit, Sew & Socialize (SSS) and Tips & Techniques (T&T) helpful for learning new skills quickly. They have quilting retreats every other year. They also hold biannual enrichment days where members can spend a day sewing mini-retreat style) and learn new skills. A monthly newsletter, Thread Tales, keeps

members up to date. Check the Calendar and Events pages online at: www.Suncoastquiltingcircle.org to see what the club is up to in 2018. Many members’ projects can be seen on the Suncoast Quilting Circle’s Facebook page. Workshops, lectures, and demonstrations are held throughout the year. They encourage Show & Tell about members’ projects, which inspire everyone to keep quilting. Projects include seasonal blocks, friendship blocks, annual holiday quilt, block of the month, and every second year a quilt show, which includes a raffle quilt, made by our members. The Quilting Show is a great opportunity to be inspired and meet some members. It is held March 9-10, 2018, at Minnreg Hall, 6340 126th Ave N, Largo, FL. More than 200 quilts will be on display. Bring along the business card size ad in this issue of Paradise NEWS for $1 OFF the $8 admission to the 17th biennial show.

People-to-People Excursion to Cuba

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Eckerd College announces a six-day people-to-people excursion to Cuba,

january 28-february 2, 2018

The trip will be led by a former U.S. federal government official who has traveled to Cuba for over 20 years and who has strong ties with its national artists, intellectuals and athletes and is well versed in U.S. - Cuba policy and regulations on travel on the island. OLLI piloted a trip of this nature in January 2017 in advance of and with the expectation of additional changes to U.S. - Cuba policy and specifically travel to it. While the excursion will include visits to Havana’s historic sights, including the Plaza of the Revolution, the National Cathedral, its captivating old town, private artisan shops and Ernest Hemingway’s favorite destinations, the focus of this trip will be on a true people-topeople exchange that is unique. Travelers will be staying in private homes with Cuban families, eating exclusively in privately-owned restaurants or paladares and engaging with the creative and intellectual leaders in Havana. The trip also includes a ferry ride to the Afro-Cuban community of Regla to experience its distinctive music and meet with Roberto Zurbano, a noted Cuban writer & internationally recognized intellectual. Away from Havana, travelers will be taken to Vinales, designated by UNESCO as a world heritage site, in the province of Pinar Del Rio to enjoy its beautiful valley, rolling hills and breath taking topography. Direct air travel departs from Tampa International Airport to Havana. The excursion meets the recent requirements under new U.S. regulations issued on November 8, 2017. The all-inclusive cost is $3,850 per person based on double-occupancy rooms and an additional $275 for single-occupancy room. U.S. passports required. The small-group excursion is limited to 14 people.

inshore - The sheepshead bite continues to be hot inshore around the bridges, jetties and docks. The trout bite is also doing strong. It’s a great time of year to target speckled trout on the flats. Snook fishing at night has been stellar and the hot bait lately is the flair hawk style jig or free lined live pigfish or grunts. Silver sea trout and whiting have been thick on the beaches with tons being caught along the jetties of Johns Pass. Hogfish bite has been consistent, but not on fire yet. offshore - The extreme trips are slaying the grouper with an average keeper grouper number close to thirty nice grouper. Plenty of fat red grouper and scamp are being caught as well with some big mangrove snapper mixed in and plenty of tuna are around on the surface of the water. The big yellowtail snapper have been actively feeding offshore as well making it a great time to go deep! The 2018 specialty trip schedule is now LIVE on the Hubbard’s Marina website! Astrology Year Forecast 2018

It’s a New Year, with new celestial energy and the promise it brings to us all! Growth and development on a personal and global level has begun and will continue especially in areas of finance, and places of structure in our lives. A new sense of unity and awareness to humanitarian concerns is activated. And we will continue to become more aware of what has long been hidden, or has been neglected to be addressed. May it all bring us closer to the world we want to create for ourselves and the planet. CAPRICORN: Your new year starts on a social note and good times are on your schedule! The biggest news of all is Saturn the taskmaster paying you a visit for the next couple of years. Don’t worry; rewards may come but only with hard work. Whatever you need to attend to in all areas of your life will surface now to be corrected. Be careful of extremes as you work along. Friends can open many doors for you this year; and groups, either personal or professional can bring benefit. Financial areas will have many ups and downs with both income and resources from others. As your values change you release the old and embrace the new. Logical thinking can seem confusing now but check the facts before you rely only on your intuition. An unusual hobby may interest you and breakthroughs in romance may occur.

AQUARIUS: Career opportunities increase or position may have growth potential; with income enhanced. Be careful not to spend faster than you make it. Health concerns can surface suddenly, especially in any area that has been ignored. Clarity comes through meditation; introspection. A time to finish things undone instead of starting new will be to your advantage as a cycle of the last several years comes to a close. The very foundations of your life are radically changing. You break away or free yourself from the past. Relationships with family or parents may change as well as your home or living situation. Partnerships will experience shifts with karmic influences as you become aware of yourself and actions in these situations.

PISCES: Your mind opens up to exciting new information that was never apparent before. Mental attitudes change as you look at life and begin to communicate in a new way. Everyday life is a hectic pace with little rest and predictability. Travel is likely for learning or teaching others. And your perspective on life can be expanded tremendously this year. Health will be a major area of focus as you learn about wellness options. Many things may be revealed which make changes easier on many levels. Workplace will have its share of surprises and need necessary adjustments. Friends or groups, whether personal or professional, may require your support. If you aren’t attaining your hopes for the future, now is the time to clear the path so that you can begin a new cycle later. You don’t have to know it all now.

ARIES: Long awaited recognition can be yours and career demands or a change in status may come with it! Your karma is to receive or reap what you have sown. Any rewards have been earned and may continue to ask for your hard work and dedication. The areas of most change for you this year is with children, love relationships and friendships. Future plans may be highlighted as well. Venus gives you popularity in March; but setbacks or obligations may come along with it. When Mercury retrogrades in your sign late March and April it will be a great time to get back to “you” and review and release that which no longer is needed in your life. Financial growth and increased resources are likely; but choose investments wisely. New values can cause you to modify existing money and income avenues. The year ends with opportunities for travel, education and understanding. TAURUS: This is a fortunate year for marriage and business partnerships! Others can expand your world in many ways; but be careful of inflated egos and empty promises, too. Many changes come to home, family and career areas this whole year; especially in summer. Eclipses affect your sign this year and health, whether physical, mental or emotional should be your top priority as issues arise. Venus brings you favor in April; enhances finances in May. Travel this year comes with obligations or for work instead of fun. You take a serious look at your beliefs and philosophie,s which should be a guideline not a

rule. In the fall you make peace in relationships and reconnect to associates. Reviews in the workplace and in health matters can resolve concerns. The year ends with a review in resources and new start in letting go of old patterns that no longer serve you at this time in life.

GEMINI: Your everyday life will bring much activity. Interaction with siblings is highlighted all year as many changes come into their lives. You may find yourself interested in education and learning new things. And a restlessness leads to travel both near and far. This year health conditions can improve unless you overdo, then excess will increase problems. A better work environment is likely which is tied to a career move or position change. Late April and most of May you can get what you want within reason and make good impressions. Financial problems come to light and it is time for accountability in money matters and with resources. Pay what you owe and what is owed to you will come. This is not the year to take chances with your earnings. A new awareness may come as you take time for introspection and meditation. Dreams may open your mind or bring awareness like never before. Hidden things are revealed on many levels.

CANCER: A strong focus on values can cause you to make sudden changes in your life this year. Financial responsibilities and resources from others may also endure upsets and revisions. Endings can occur in many areas as the old is let go of. Your marriage or business partner, associates may have added responsibilities and need your ongoing support. May and June can bring favorable energy to you but compromises are needed for success. A new cycle of personal growth, creativity and self-expression begins which will enhance your relationships with others on many levels. This is a lucky time for you and speculation may pay off if you don’t get carried away! Travel is enjoyable; children get opportunities and love can bloom as you are ready to open your heart. You may get interested in humanitarian activities with groups and organizations; and new friends from all walks of life are likely to be made.

If you’re paying more than 4% to sell your home, you’re paying way too much! “We created REALean to ll a need in the real estate industry: concierge-level full service for sellers without the antique 6% (or more) fee. When we list homes for sale, we charge 4%. If we are the only agent involved in the sale, we lower our fee to just 3%. Since 2014, we’ve saved sellers nearly $750,000 had they paid 6% to sell their home. Real estate commissions are negotiable, and it’s your hard-earned equity.” – Kevin and Lisa Cahill
