PUBLISHERS MESSAGE May is one of our very favorite months here in Paradise. Spring break is over and the snow birds have mostly returned to their northern climes, where some have still encountered the last vestages of winter. It was a busy height of season, that persisted into the shoulder season as dropping room rates attracted families and retirees looking for some more affordable warmth after a long, cold and stormy winter for many. For an update on the area’s tourism see page 30. We continue to enjoy the cooler morning temperatures, nights when we can turn off the air conditioning and let the breezes from the gulf bring fresh air into our homes. Afternoons in the high 70’s or low 80’s make it a a perfect time of year to enjoy all that the incredible Tampa Bay area has to offer. Summer is on the horizon, with the inevitable official launch of hurricane season on June 1. In preparation for that, St. Pete Beach is hosting a “Hurricane Forum” on May 12th at the St. Pete Beach Community Center and Gulfport on May 31st at the Catherine Hickman Theatre. Memorial Day Weekend is May 26th - 28th. The Florida Orchestra celebrates the occasion with a “Patriotic Salute” Friday night at the Straz and Saturday at Mahaffey. Also saturday night is the annual USO Dance at the St. Petersburg Coliseum. We will be there with some of our friends for the GI Jive Band performance from 7-11pm. Come join us! We wish all women a

Happy Mothers Day .

Be Responsible on the Water From Desk of Sheriff Bob Gualtieri Citizens wish to legally operate a motor vehicle on the road must possess a valid driver’s license or learner’s permit. However, the same cannot be said about vehicles on the water.

Florida law requires boat operators born after January 1, 1988, to complete an approved boater education course and receive a“Florida Boating Safety Education ID Card,”yet there are exceptions. Responsible vessel operators should arm themselves with boating knowledge and rules of the water and remain alert for the many other boaters who don’t. Complete a Safe Boating Course: Driving a car and operating a boat require different skill sets and knowledge about entirely different rules and regulations. Enrolling in an in-person or online boaters’ safety course is a great way to learn the rules of the water and familiarize yourself with basic boating principles. Visit the National Safe Boating Council website at www.safeboatingcouncil.org for links to several approved online courses. Know your Boat: Before you set sail, get familiar with the vessel you are operating and the area you are navigating, including water depth, tides, weather, slow or idle speed requirements, and swim exclusion and restricted zones. Get in the Zone: Manatee Protection Zones are back in effect through October 31st. Vessel operators should pay close attention to all signs throughout the Intracoastal, specifically looking for these zones that have not only been implemented within the last year but also extended to provide extra protection for manatees. Marine Unit deputies will be regularly monitoring and enforcing these zones. Note: Rules and restrictions are constantly changing, so it is important to stay up-to-date, even for seasoned boaters. Get Equipped: Florida law requires personal flotation devices (PFD), or“lifejackets,”be readily accessible to each passenger on the vessel at all times. Children under age 6 must wear PFDs while underway. PFDs aren’t the only required boating gear. Visit the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) website for a list of other mandatory items myfwc.com.

Seasonal Allergies!

Scan Constantly: There are no stop signs or traffic lights on the water, so you MUST constantly scan the water for other boaters, swimmers, water skiers, or stumps and other landmarks jutting up from the water that could severely damage your boat or harm you and others.

We Can Help! YOU CAN BE SNIFFLE-FREE

File a “Float Plan”: Share your trip details – where you’re going, when you plan to return, passengers’ names, and boat information – with a responsible person before you launch, in case you lose contact in an emergency. Make sure to contact that person when you return safely. Don’t Boat under the Influence: Remember, operating any vehicle – including a boat – while impaired by drugs or alcohol is illegal and can end in a lot worse than a citation. Just as you would before a night out on the town, designate a sober driver for days on the water. For more boating safety tips, visit the FWC, National Boating Safety Council, and the BoatUS Foundation websites.

was celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony by St Pete Beach city officials in late April. City Manager, Wayne Saunders, wields the scissors surrounded by Mayor Al Johnson and city commissioners (all in sunglasses l - r) Rick Falkenstein, District 2, Terri Finnerty, District 1, Melinda Pletcher, District 4, Ward Friszolowski, District 3, with city staff, and Nelson Contracting’s on-site project manager behind him. Maria Lowe (far right) was mayor when the project began in 2015. She is planning to write two books based on what she learned in the process. Melinda Pletcher is the elected representative for the district where the complicated infrastructure repair took place over the past 2 1/2 years. She was re-elected unopposed in March of 2017. Little wonder. Melinda Pletcher, who is also a successful RE/MAX Preferred Realtor, wife and mother, takes her official duties seriously, and is dedicated to the quirky and quaint historic district of Pass-a-Grille and the island of Vina Del Mar. In an interview after the ceremony, Commissioner Pletcher said the real heroes of the project were the business people of Pass-a-Grille who persevered, and the residents who supported them.

The Florida League of Cities recently recognized Dr. Terri Finnerty with a 2018 Home Rule Hero Award. She earned this prestigious award for her tireless efforts to advance the League’s legislative agenda and help protect the Home Rule powers of Florida’s cities during the 2018 legislative session.“These dedicated municipal officials are some of the Florida League of Cities’ biggest advocates for municipal issues,”said Florida League of Cities President, Gil Ziffer.“Their efforts during the 2018 legislative session were extraordinary. The League and its legislative team are proud to recognize and thank them for their service.” Home Rule is the ability for a city to address local problems through and by local decision makers with minimal state interference. Terri Finnerty won reelection unopposed in March 2018 as Commissioner for District I in St Pete Beach.

Treasure Islettes Present New Board Left to right: Toni Hawkins, President, Elaine Dawson, Vice president, Linda Gresik, Secretary, Judy Koepkey, Treasurer As Treasure Island’s Mayor Larry Lunn installed the newly elected board, all Islettes members were recognized for countless hours worked during the past year to accomplish their club’s objectives. The group was founded in 1955 to support community through volunteer service, beautification projects, scholarships and donations to the City, the Police and Fire Departments. The Treasure Islettes meet the fourth Monday evenings, from September to May, at the Treasure Island Community Center. The club is open to women who have an interest in the betterment of Treasure Island. To learn more about the club, Google them or email Elaine Dawson at treasurei2@aol.com, 8

Pass-A-Grille Beach Community Church’s Thrift Shop concludes its 59th year of service with a 75% off sale on all merchandise. In addition to the full line Women’s & Men’s sections, a large inventory of kitchenware, small appliances, jewelry, linens, wall pictures, books, games and toys are available. The shop stocks only new and gently used items and is fully stocked due to the generous donations. Proceeds support local charities such as Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, PARC, Pinellas Hope, Clothes for Kids, and church missions. Located at the corner of 17th Ave Pass-A-Grille Way, St Pete Beach and is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 9 AM - noon. The shop closes for the summer at noon May 31st and reopens in early September. St John Vianney Catholic Church is registering for its “Shipwrecked” Vacation Bible School. Camp is held on the Church campus at 445 82nd Ave, St Pete Beach, FL 33706, June 18th - 22nd, 8:30 am-11:30 am for rising grades PreK - 5th. All faiths welcome. Bible Stories brought to life, Sciency Fun Gizmos, team-building games, cool Bible songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the standout activities that help faith flow into real life. For information and registration, http://stjohnsparish.org/vbs.html. St. Pete Beach commission is considering hiring a lobbyist next fiscal year to aid projects in state budget. Commissioner, Terri Finnerty suggested employing a lobbying firm.

“When we had a past lobbyist they did a great job,” she said. Mayor Al Johnson agreed. “A lobbyist to secure funding for capital projects could be “worth the investment.” “It’s worth our time to start the process,” Commissioner Melinda Pletcher agreed. City Manager, Wayne Saunders said funds to hire a lobbyist, perhaps $50,000, would have to be allocated in next year’s budget. Commissioner Pletcher said a lobbyist may even be able to assist the city on the national level, such as meeting Americans With Disabilities Act requirements. “If the federal government is requiring mandates for things like ADA, maybe we are missing the boat on getting funding,” she said. If the city is not represented in Tallahassee at the end of each legislative session, it will likely miss out on its projects being funded, staff and commissioners agreed. Many times, the items that receive funding are decided on in the last few days of each legislative session.

The City of St. Pete Beach has released the Local Mitigation Strategy (LMS) Annual Report 2017. The report illustrates successful mitigation and preventative efforts by the city to protect citizens, property, infrastructure, and the environment in the community. It also depicts proposed future projects that are intended to mitigate and prevent hazards. The St Pete Beach Local Mitigation Strategy was developed as part of the county-wide Local Mitigation Strategy and was adopted by the city in 2015. The Annual Report highlights planned and implemented activities that are specific to St Pete Beach. The LMS and the Annual Report are part of the city’s participation in FEMA’s Community Rating System (CRS). The CRS rating that a community receives directly impacts the amount of rate reduction that all policy owners in the city receive on their flood insurance. Copies of the report are available at www.stpetebeach.org or by calling 727-363-9266.

Perfect Timing Two weeks ago, one of Creative Clay’s vans was diagnosed with a bad transmission. The cost to repair was more than the value of the vehicle, so CEO, Kim Dohrman was forced to take it off the road. That impacted their ability to serve their artists. Led by Branch Manager and Senior Mortgage Consultant Tammy Boldt, a former Creative Clay board chair, the entire staff of On Q Financial’s local branch visited Creative Clay April 3rd to present them a check for $10,000. Creative Clay was among three non-profits chosen in a competition where On Q Financial offices around the country nominated their favorites. “The perfect kick-start to our fundraising drive for a new van,” said Dohrman. “The donation is also the result of strong community relationships and the advocacy of friends who believe in our vision of creating arts access and equity. Thanks to On Q Financial, we’re already half-way to our goal of purchasing a new van,” said Dohrman. To help with their fundraising drive, contact Creative Clay, 1846 1st Ave S, St Petersburg, FL, 727-825-0515 or admin@creativeclay.org. A more lasting new patriotic tribute can be found at the St Petersburg Museum of History, as the “American Soldier” A Photographic Tribute, Storms Back into St Petersburg. A dramatic exhibition of nearly 70 wall-to-wall photographs capturing the essence of American soldiering for more than 150 years, the exhibit will take guests on a soldier’s journey from the Civil War to the streets of Baghdad. Sunset Beach Phase VI Stormwater - April - October

The final phase of the Sunset Beach Stormwater Best Management Practices Project will be constructed from April to October 2018. This project will connect stormwater infrastructure to West Gulf Blvd. These improvements are designed primarily to improve discharge water quality while improving stormwater drainage during normal tidal events. Construction will be located on West Gulf Blvd south of the Bayshore Drive intersection. Bayshore Drive will be used as a detour for southbound traffic and for pedestrians for the majority of the project.

This project also includes the redevelopment the Tern and Ring Billed Gull parking lots. Pervious concrete will be used and native vegetation will be added. Throughout the project, the Ring Billed Gull lot will be closed and used as a staging area by the contractor. Please use the recycling centers located at Treasure Bay and City Hall.

Central Beach Trail Reconstruction - April - August

Beginning April 16th, the Treasure Island Beach Trail will be reconstructed. Currently, the trail is cracked and reconstruction is needed to improve safety and aesthetics. In general, work will begin on the north end of the trail and continue south until construction is complete this August. Beach access will remain available, though less convenient. Contact Public Works with any questions or concerns.

WAKE it up, SHAKE it up, at MEMORY Cafe HEALTH

What five letter word starts with A and ends in L? Find the answer below.

Simple exercises like this help keep the brain in better working condition. What else can help? Memory Café.

For millions of people around the world, various forms of dementia are quietly sneaking into families and creating day to day living challenges. It’s what inspired the concept of Memory Café in the UK and what continues to make it an effective tool around the world in living with memory issues.

Mayo Clinic describes dementia as follows: “Dementia isn’t a specific disease. Instead, dementia describes a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking and social abilities severely enough to interfere with daily functioning.” https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseasesconditions/dementia/symptoms-causes/ syc-20352013

Fortunately, for residents in the St. Petersburg area, there are three monthly Memory Café events. Designed to enhance quality of life for people with dementia and their care partners, Memory Cafés are a welcome relief. Where else

do you go, where, like you, everyone you meet is living at home with dementia? Who else understands the day to day challenges?

At Memory Café, having dementia and talking about it is not taboo. Memory Cafés build necessary support networks through socialization. They are an effective tool for maintaining healthy, happier, active and more engaged lives despite memory issues. They’re meant to be enjoyed, to learn, to give people a reason to get up and get out, stimulate thought, and lift the spirits. Facilitators and co-founders, Dr. Cate McCarty, Dementia Coach, and Jane Ogilvie, Elder Care Issue Consultant and LPN of Senior Solutions of Pinellas County, offer up over 70 years of combined professional and personal family experience with aging issues and dementia.

If you are a care partner of someone with memory concerns, are awaiting diagnosis, or have already received a dementia diagnosis, join Monday May 7th or June 11th, 11 AM - 1 PM at Carrabba’s Italian Grill, at 1951 4th St N, St Petersburg.

Catch the original Cate and Jane Memory Café Monday May 14th or June 18th, 12:15 PM - 2 PM at Neptune Grill, at 5501 Shore Blvd S, Gulfport.

You can also meet us at Tyrone Square Mall

for the Walking Group plus Memory Café, May 18 or June 21, at 10 AM – 1 PM at the Food Court’s parking lot entrance facing 22nd Ave. Check in from 9:45 AM – 10 AM. Walk at a leisurely pace for an hour, find items on the scavenger hunt list, and then meet up at Red Robin Gourmet Burger for a 21st Century burger joint experience. Expect a mix of reminiscing and current topic conversation.

The mall walk experience opens new doors and helps to bring increased dementia awareness to our community. This month, for the first time, Naples Soap Company is recognizing our group in their own unique way. These types of interactions are a win-win for all.

These events occur monthly. All are free to attend. Food and beverages are available for purchase. If you are a business owner or an employee and would like to learn how to make your business friendlier to your dementia customers, please contact us. Various staff trainings and presentations are available and may be customized to meet your business’s specific needs.

To RSVP, or for further information, contact Dementia Myth Buster Jane at 727-327-0167 or sensol@seniorsmile.com or Dementia Myth Buster Cate at 813-384-7571 or catemccarty@gmail.com.

Trusts & Taxes Giving Back - Making Strides Against Breast Cancer by Samantha Chechele This month, instead of discussing the fascinating topics of taxes and estate planning, I am going to share about a topic that is a passion for me, and for many others. It is about one of the things I do to give back and has become a meaningful outlet to support a cause that touches the lives of so many people. Every year in the United States, over 300,000 women (and some men as well) are diagnosed with breast cancer. Statistics show that over a lifetime, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Three years ago, it was me. I spent the better part of 2016 in treatment, with chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. Thankfully, I am now cancer-free and hope to remain in remission for the rest of my life. Thanks to great doctors, cutting edge treatment, and the grace of God, this episode is in the rear-view mirror for me. Many others, however, are still in the middle of their cancer experience so now it is my passion to do what I can to help. Everywhere I go I meet people with stories of loved ones - sisters, mothers, aunts, cousins, daughters, best friends, who have journeyed through breast cancer treatment. Thankfully, many have survived, and continue to live in hope that their cancer journey is over permanently. Some have lost the battle, many after several rounds of fighting. Just about everyone who has been touched by a cancer story wants to do something about it so here is how you can help. The American Cancer Society is the premier organization in the United States to fund cancer research, patient assistance, and advocacy and education about early detection and prevention. Twenty years ago, the American Cancer Society held its first major breast cancer fundraiser in St Petersburg, an October 5K walk called

MAY 2018 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The event has become an annual October tradition in downtown St Petersburg, flooding Vinoy Park with a sea of pink, which last year drew over 6,000 fundraising walkers and over 200 teams. Each team and walker have a story and a connection to the cause and each of them comes to the event in a collective effort to raise funds, awareness, support for patients and survivors, and to celebrate life. The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event this year is Saturday, October 20, 2018, at Vinoy Park. This is only May, why talk about it now? Great question, and the answer is that it takes months of planning, preparation, team recruitment, fund-raising efforts, and organization to pull off a successful event again this year, in terms of numbers of teams, numbers of participants, awareness raised, and funds donated to the cause. This year, I, along with my good friend, Juliet Kyes, community leader and local business owner of Action Coach of Tampa Bay, have been tapped to chair the event. We are committed to making this the best Strides ever, in honor of the 20-year anniversary of the event, and in honor of all those who have fought the breast-cancer battle. How can you help? Another great question. We are in need of committee members, team captains, walkers, people to attend fundraising events, and most importantly donors. If this is a cause that is important to you, please do reach out and contact me to see how you can get involved. There is no fee or minimum fundraising required to host a team. The sign-up and fundraising are done through an online portal and the event is a ton of fun for all participants. Survivors are honored and celebrated,

celebrity guests attend and encourage the walkers, and each year’s event is more memorable than the last. There is even an opportunity for men to participate in a special way. Three years ago, the American Cancer Society introduced a program called Real Men Wear Pink. This is a group of men who want to make a special effort against Breast Cancer by fundraising and wearing pink during the month of October to raise awareness. Real Men who Wear Pink in Pinellas have included area physicians, attorneys, business leaders, law enforcement, and other prominent men in the community in past years. This is another great opportunity to become involved, and we are looking for a few good men to be Real Men again this year. Get involved in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Save the date for October 20, 2018, 9 AM. Contact me by email (Samantha@chechelelaw.com) or by phone 727-381-6001 to sign up a team, join a committee, or walk with my team, Cha-Cha Chechele Law, to donate, or to be a Real Man. Our event coordinator, Cindi Crisci, with the American Cancer Society is also a longtime breast cancer survivor. You can also reach out to her and she will provide all the information that you may need about participating and about how the funds that are raised are used to fight cancer. Her contact information is Cindi.Crisci@cancer.org or 813-349-5080. We hope that you will be inspired to get involved and participate in this fun and worthy event with the end goal that one day, breast cancer (and other cancers) will be eradicated and future generations will no longer have to make strides against breast cancer.PN

Named Among Fastest Growing Craft Breweries of 2017 by the Brewers Association St Pete Beach—Mastry’s Brewing Co. was named one of the fastest growing small and independent craft breweries by the Brewers Association (BA), the not-for-profit trade group representing small and independent craft brewers. The inaugural list offered insight into the diversity of growth within the craft brewing industry. “We wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for our family, friends, and having such great patrons. It’s been a real labor of love to bring Mastry’s to where it is today, and we aren’t even close to slowing down,” said Matthew Dahm, Founder and CEO of Mastry’s Brewing Co. Mastry’s Brewing Co. was ranked number 7 among 50 small and independent breweries from across 25 states. Median growth from 2016 to 2017 for these breweries was 216 percent; the median size of breweries on the list went from 284 barrels in 2016 to 963 barrels in 2017. These brewing companies represent 5.5 percent of craft’s growth by volume for 2017 and include eight brewpubs, 40 microbreweries, and two regional craft breweries.

“With 5 percent growth overall for small and independent brewers in 2017, and microbreweries and brewpubs delivering the majority of that, we wanted to spotlight some of the breweries driving that growth,” said Bart Watson, chief economist of the Brewers Association. “As the growth base for craft becomes more diffused, these fast-growing brewing companies illustrate that a diverse set of success stories still exist.”

Methodology: The list presented includes only small and independent breweries with all of their production at their own facilities. Breweries had to have opened 12/31/2015 or earlier to be considered. It only includes breweries that reported to the Brewers Association’s annual Beer Industry Production Survey; breweries with staff estimates or data from state excise tax reports were not considered. Finally, breweries must have had data from at least three years to be considered. Mastry’s Brewing Co. is an award-winning brewery located on St Pete Beach. Originally founded in 2014 as a brewpub operating out of a family-owned

restaurant, operations were expanded and relocated in 2016, making Mastry’s Brewing Co. the first craft brewery and tasting room on St Pete Beach. Today, Mastry’s Brewing Co. is proud to be the craft brewery and tasting room on St Pete Beach. Featuring 15 plus rotating house brews, guest taps, special release bottles, live music, food trucks, and special events, Mastry’s Brewing Co. is changing the beach beer experience. By continuing to push and experiment with unique recipes, while mixing in the relaxing and open setting on beautiful St Pete Beach, Mastry’s brings you a true experience and taste of a vacation in a glass. TIERRA VERDE’S NEW BRIDGE Story by Peter A. Roos Aerial photo by Patrick Higgins Amgvisual.com

It has been talked about for years, but just like the Bayway Bridge to St. Pete Beach, it will eventually become a reality. The project includes replacing the existing two-lane bascule bridge with a high-level fixed-bridge structure providing 65ft vertical navigational clearance over the existing channel. The Village at Tierra Verde driveway will be relocated to align with Madonna Blvd, and a roundabout will be added at Madonna Blvd and 1st Street. The entire road will be resurfaced from Isla Shopping Center to the roundabout. This project has been discussed at length for up to 15 years and is currently on deck for action by FDOT. Based on the data provided by the bridge tender at Structure E, and allowing for tidal fluctuations, this height would allow over 99% of the waterway users to safely navigate under the structure. The bridge replacement typical section includes a 12ft lane and a 10ft shoulder in each direction to accommodate bicyclists and disabled vehicles. A 5ft sidewalk is included on the west side, separated from the shoulder by a concrete barrier wall. An 11ft sidewalk is provided on the east side for a planned multi-use path. The overall width of the fixedspan is 65 ft. South of the bridge, the typical section transitions from the undivided two-lane bridge to a four-lane divided urban roadway with turn lanes. Lane, shoulder, and sidewalk widths will be consistent with the proposed bridge. The proposed roadway typical section approaching the north end of the bridge is similar to the proposed bridge except it is elevated on embankment with a retaining wall on each side. The retaining wall will minimize the amount of fill needed to be placed on the causeway and into Boca Ciega Bay and prevent the type of erosion evident in the existing sloped embankment. A 4.5-ft high pedestrian/bicycle railing will be provided on the outside. Pedestrian hand railings are required on the sidewalks when the grades exceed 5%. The proposed design speed for all proposed typical sections is 45 mph. The northern and southern roadway approaches to the bridge structure would be placed on an earthen fill section with a retaining wall. All superstructure components would be located above the splash zone.

Access from S.R. 679 to the causeway beaches north of the bridge could continue via the existing northern set of turnouts. Vehicles could then travel along the causeway on either side to reach the beach area at the southern end of the causeway. Unlike the existing condition, the proposed bridge (north side only) could accommodate vehicular traffic under the bridge from one side of the causeway to the other. The proposed bridge structure is anticipated to accommodate a storm water management facility (SMF) under both the north and south ends of the bridge to meet treatment requirements for the recommended alternative. These proposed pond configurations will also accommodate a potential future S.R. 679 widening to four-lane without modification, if warranted. Schedule? FDOT plans on selecting a design-build contractor in 2018. They are in that process now. A year ago when they met with the Tierra Verde Partnership they said they expected to be done with that in 2017, so they are now 6 months behind that schedule.

TOURISM Drives Progress

for Pinellas and its Gulf Beaches Communities

Story by STEVE TRAIMAN

Tourism is the driving force behind the continuing economic growth and success for Pinellas County and its Gulf Beaches communities. With a guiding lead from Visit St. Pete/Clearwater, visitors and their resulting bed tax dollars set new records almost every quarter over the prior year.

30

MAY 2018 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

Pinellas County collected more than $54 million in tourist development or bed tax dollars during the 2017 fiscal year ending last September 30th, a more than 10.6% increase over the prior year. For fiscal year 2018 from October through February, the five-month bed tax total was up almost 10.2% to $21.77 million, indicating another record year. At two meetings last December with local tourism industry professionals, Visit St Pete/Clearwater (VSPC) unveiled its new 2018 marketing plans, which leverage big data in ways the destination’s never seen. “Research is going to dictate our behaviors and direction like never before,” said David Downing, VSPC President and CEO. “This state-of-the-art technology allows us to evaluate millions of data points and build a plan around it that we never could have done before.”

St. Pete Beach • Treasure Island

After a year-long analysis of visitation patterns using AirSage, a pioneer in population analytics and location-based insights, VSPC is significantly ramping up its marketing presence in Orlando, which is the area’s as greatest source of yearround visitation. New York and Tampa Bay round out the top three feeder markets, and increased initiatives are planned there as well, but Orlando, which delivers more than 30% more visitors than New York, will be a main focus in 2018. Tim Ramsberger, VSPC COO, also gave an update on the organization’s structure, including the development of an all-new sports and events department, and introduced Kristin Coryn as the new Community Relations Manager. In addition, Media & Interactive Director Leroy Bridges outlined the latest industry digital trends, including the use of virtual reality in the promotion of meeting spaces and a first-of-its-kind pilot program with Google. VSPC’s Downing Comments VSPC chief Downing told Paradise News, “Based on the continuing rise in bed tax figures for the current fiscal year, we’re seeing a culmination of many years of targeted destination marketing from key feeder markets. The rising tide of tourism to Pinellas County is the bottom line on the investment we’re making in the best feeder markets. As things go right now, the rising barometer of the bed tax is where the rubber meets the road.”

“We also had record setting average daily rate (ADR) and record breaking revenue per room for our hotels last fiscal year. Our goal is not only to bring more visitors here, but also to build an economic footprint from these visitors. Pinellas is already the most densely populated county in Florida so with our tough infrastructure problems, it’s a delicate balancing act to preserve what we have to offer visitors.” (The ADR was up 6.4% to $202.31 for fiscal 2017, and the RevPAR or revenue per available hotel room was up 7.4% to $178.71 for the same year.) Downing continues, “We’re keeping our eye on the ball as tourism is the number one employer in the county. Everything we do is to support the tourism economy of our Gulf Beaches, Pinellas County, and the state of Florida. We’re selling a fulfilling experience with very serious economic development work that at its heart is every resident of Pinellas County.” TBBC Key Observations Robin Miller, president and CEO of the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce (TBBC), told Paradise News, “Over the past several years our communities and businesses have benefited tremendously through tourism and its continued growth. Our destination as an award-winning beach, combined with the diverse arts and culture offerings, we now seem to have a year-round visitation. Though we always peak in the Spring, we have seen great successes in our off months as well. ParadiseNewsFL.com | MAY 2018

31

“Additionally, as a result we see more small businesses seeking space to open in our beach communities and these businesses seem to be keeping their doors open successfully. This is a much different story from that of the 2009 - 2011 time frame. “The Chamber will highlight this success as we celebrate Travel & Tourism Week with our annual Tourism Lunch and Business Expo on Friday, May 11th, at TradeWinds Island Grand Resort, 5500 Gulf Blvd, St Pete Beach. The entire business community is invited to hear keynote speaker, Viviana Jordan, director at Florida AirBnB, and the 2018 Tourism Person of the Year will be announced.” The Business Expo features more than two dozen leading Tampa Bay area Chamber members starting at 11:00 AM, followed by the luncheon at noon. Event sponsors include Florida Restaurant & Lodging Assn, award sponsor; St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, premium raffle sponsor; and Busch Gardens, dessert sponsor. Business Expo exhibitors as of April 25 included 3 Palms Beachfront Vacation Rentals, CPA Partners, Creative Copy by Steve Traiman/BAPWG, Sheraton Sand Key, Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach, Florida Aquarium, Martz Group, Radio St. Pete, Tampa Bay Aviation, Paradise News Magazine, Palms of Pasadena Hospital, Elliott Coastal Realty LLC, Tampa Bay Watch, and TBBC Leadership Institute.

Legislature Tourism Action Pinellas County collected more than $54 million in bed tax dollars last fiscal year. About 60%, or $32.4 million, goes to the St Petersburg-Clearwater Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, and covers operations at Visit St Pete-Clearwater, responsible for advertising and marketing the county and its communities as a prime tourist destination. The other 40%, or about $21.6 million, goes toward other allowable expenses, including beach re-nourishment, an “elite” event funding program and a capital funding project program. During this year’s session, the Florida Legislature passed a new bill effective July 1st that adds a new list of tourism-benefiting programs now eligible for funding. Included for beach parks and beach re-nourishment are channel estuary or lagoon improvements and construction of beach groins, currently under way at St Pete Beach’s Upham Beach. Another key change is allowing bed tax funds to be used to acquire, construct, extend, enlarge, remodel, repair, improve, maintain, operate or finance public facilities needed to increase tourist-related businesses. Commenting on this and other legislature activity, Doug Izzo, TBBC government affairs director, told Paradise News, “Our Chamber has long been an advocate and a resource for the tourism industry. Every year we advocate at the local, state, and federal levels.”

“The 2018 state legislative session proved to be a good year for tourism. Legislators had proposed cutting VISIT FLORIDA’s funding, however, they ultimately agreed to fund at the same amount as last year—$76 million. VISIT FLORIDA will now have the funds it needs to market our destination. For every $1 VISIT FLORIDA spends, approximately $3 is returned to the state. “Legislation did not pass that would have overregulated CVB’s (Visit St Pete/Clearwater) to the point of rendering them ineffective. For every $1 Visit St. Pete/Clearwater spends, approximately $8 is returned to Pinellas County. “There has been a lot of hype about legislation passed related to beach access. Our right to enjoy the beaches is protected by the Florida Constitution. Neither the Legislature nor the county can interfere, period. Everyone can continue to use the beaches as they always have. “Tourism is the lifeblood of our community. Tourism funds beach nourishment, capital projects, local events, education, public safety, and attracts unique small businesses. Residents alone are not

enough to support all the wonderful attractions, restaurants and shops that locals frequent.” “Additionally, tourism pays a third of our sales tax and is the reason Florida residents do not pay a state income tax. Tourism is an economic driver that enhances the quality of life for all of us on the Gulf Beaches and in the rest of Pinellas County.” PN [Editor’s Note: Special thanks to David Downing, president & CEO, and Mackenzie Monteiro, media relations manager, VSPC; Robin Miller, president & CEO, and Doug Izzo, government affairs director, TBBC, for their excellent information and comments.] [Steve Traiman is President of Creative Copy by Steve Traiman in St. Pete Beach, offering freelance business writing services. Florida Atlantic University undergrad David Browne as the winner of its Student Composer Competition. TFO will premiere his short work, Shattered Clock Fanfare, on the final concerts of the Masterworks series at three major halls in Tampa Bay in May.

Browne, 22, is a senior majoring in commercial music/composition at FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters in Boca Raton. “Shattered Clock Fanfare is a musical depiction of a recurring dream I had as a child wherein I was forever lost in a universe where time never existed,” Browne said in his artist statement. Someday Browne hopes to compose for video games, media, and professional ensembles of all sorts. After he graduates in the fall 2018 semester, he plans to compose, produce and build a portfolio of classical works and electronic music with an eye toward graduate school. LIGHTS OUT to PROTECT

Sea Turtle Nesting Season May 1 to October 31

Newly hatched turtles find their way to the sea by following the natural light reflected by the water.

Young turtles have a small amount of energy that must take them to the water, which under natural conditions is the brightest spot on the nighttime beach. If they disorient and head the wrong way, they may starve to death before landing in the floating sargassum weeds that are their food source.

Clearwater city ordinances determine specific lighting requirements for beach parking lots,

Sea Turtles

streets and promenades to protect sea turtles. If you live near the beach, make sure you shut off or dim your lights at night. If you play at the beach, follow these tips from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to help protect sea turtle nests: • Take all personal belongings from the beach at the end of the day so no obstacles exist on the way to the water. • Flatten sand castles and fill in holes. • Pick up and properly dispose of litter on the beach. • Stay off the dunes and use the designatedwalkovers for crossing. • Shield any artificial lighting that might shine toward the beach.

Another 501c(3) organization worthy of your support is:

Sea Turtle Trackers, Vicky Foster (816) 898-9527 or Theresa Arenholz at 727.501.5581, Vicky@seaturtletrackers.org. They patrol St. Pete Beach religiously during turtle nesting season to protect nests and help newborns reach the water’s edge. They fund their efforts through “Turtle Adoptions” Visit their website for more information at www.seaturtletrackers.org Their moto is

“Saving sea turtles one track at a time...”

The Tampa Bay area averages about 120 nests each season, and each nest can contain an average of about 100 eggs. If you are lucky enough to find a turtle nest on the beach, don’t disturb it. If the nest is unmarked, notify the Clearwater Marine Aquarium at (727) 441-1790. They can also provide more information about sea turtle nesting season.

By Captain Mark & Dylan Hubbard 727.393.1947 John’s Pass Boardwalk, Madeira Beach HubbardsMarina.com Snook have been arriving in Johns Pass in large schools, moving along the seawalls, some in the forty pound range and many of the smaller models too. The snook push onto the beaches as the water warms up and they gear up for their spawn. The last week of April is a great time of year to get a snook or two before the season closes on May 1 and they are shut down until August 31 to protect the spawning fish. The Red Fish seem to be hiding as the snook move into the area. Trout are still biting well at night. Mackerel are still around the beaches following the bait schools. Lots of small white bait schools moving around attacking the hunting mackerel. Pompano still on the beaches and jetties biting on sand fleas, fiddler crabs and pompano jigs like Docs jigs. Sheepshead still biting on the fiddler crabs inside the pass around the structure too, they have thinned out quite a bit but we’re still seeing them come up when targeted. Late April near shore - The Kingfish bite has really heated up as the weather got warmer. We caught a Kingfish weighing nearly 40lbs aboard our 10-hour all-day using our Bass Pro Shops offshore angler ocean master jigging reels on the flat line rods. Mackerel are still being caught on the near shore trolling set ups as well. The Snapper bite near shore has continued to be spectacular from the Lane Snapper to the Grey

Snapper and all the species in between. We have been catching a steady amount of Hogfish. The bite has been picky of late, but as the water clears they seem to be more willing to chew. Offshore - A recent 39-hour offshore fishing trip did very well on big Scamp Grouper and got a few red grouper too. The largest scamp was in the 8-10lb range and nearly twenty were landed. While the Mangrove Snapper bite has been very slow, the big vermillion Snapper have been thick and biting very well to make up for them. Also, the Triggerfish have been plentiful. Some are monster sized. Tuna and Kingfish were very active and plenty were around biting on the troll or flat line. One of the Kingfish landed was nearly 38lbs during this recent 39 hour, plus over a half dozen Tuna landed too and some were fatties. Amberjack are ready for the opening of Jack season May 1st. Manatees are plentiful around Johns Pass now. Tampa Bay Ferry riders and the Hubbard’s Marina Johns Pass dolphin tours have been spotting them frequently, especially around Boca Ciega Bay. There is a new Shell Key ferry from Fort De Soto County Park to the beautiful shell key preserve! This is a great way to see the island, go shelling and enjoy a day on the water with a flexible schedule. For info on the Madeira Beach water taxi by Tampa Bay Ferry, visit tampabayferry.com.

FISHING Why mess around? If you want to catch the big ones, reserve your spot now on board Florida’s most productive fleet to the Gulf of Mexico. Bait, ice, gear & help available every trip. xÊ ,°Ê Ê 9ÊUÊ£äÊ ,°Ê 1 Ê 9ÊUÊ*, 6 / Ê ,/ ,-

DOLPHIN WATCH You’ll see dolphin, manatee, ospreys and rare eagles on the area’s best narrated cruise. Your tour also takes you past stately area mansions. Sunset Cruise available with free beer & wine for adults.

FT. DeSOTO FERRY TO BEAUTIFUL EGMONT KEY OR SHELL KEY Snorkel the ruins of historic Ft. DeSoto and tour a working lighthouse. Walk the streets of a SpanishAmerican fort or go shelling on America’s #1 beach.

by Sarah Lyons - Sirius Systems Astrological Services www.sarahlyonsastrologer.com • 727.347.4737 “Get Sirius about Your Future” May 2018 Astrology Article SCORPIO: TAURUS: Your new year begins

May begins with a strong creative vibration and a need to indulge our senses and escape from everyday life for a while! Enjoy social events but put off decisions regarding love and money. Even though Mercury is direct and passing its shadow phase, we have three planets bringing challenges to the technical and mechanical areas. Malfunctions are possible and can be sudden. Conversations and temperaments are edgy. Then, mid month our minds become more grounded as Mercury enters stable Taurus on the 13th. A New Moon also in Taurus on the 15th, begins our next lunar cycle with a more conservative but still indulgent vibe. With a little help from action planet Mars, what we start now can go far and accomplish much! But, the biggest news for this month, and for this year also happens on the 15th just a few hours after the monthly lunar cycle begins!

Unpredictable and original planet Uranus enters Taurus for the first time in 84 years and begins it’s approximately seven year stay! This will bring the world new ways to be practical in finances, economic reforms and earth resources. Unique talents and inventions will break through old worn out methods. It will be a time of great change that we will just begin to watch unfold now. People born in the first five days of Taurus will be most affected as well as those born in early Scorpio, Leo, and Aquarius. Energy planet Mars leaves industrious Capricorn on the 16th to visit inventive Aquarius. A tendency to be reckless or accident prone exists. Also now is a great time to break away from something. Venus leaves variety seeking Gemini on the 19th for a sentimental stroll through Cancer. Chances taken have endurance. We love and buy with our heart; not our heads now. On the 20th the stable Taurus Sun gets restless in Gemini wanting change and variety! Later, on the 29th, Mercury adds to the excitement entering Gemini to join the Sun after pursuing practical ideas most of the month! The Full Flower Moon in Sagittarius also on the 29th lets us be footloose and free to explore creative and artistic interests. 62
