Happy New Year 2019 by Peter A. Roos As each year comes to an end, many of us plan ahead and write down our goals for the future. Otherwise known as setting New Year’s resolutions, many of us participate in this self-improvement ritual, yet few people actually follow through on them. If you find yourself breaking your resolutions within the first few weeks of a new year, you are one of 77% of people this happens to, according to a 2007 Reuters study. Experts say we generally aim too high with our resolutions, and we get stuck in old pleasurable habits, like bingeing on Netflix. Our resolutions quickly fade in a blur of popcorn and self-indulgence. This new year is quite special for us at Paradise NEWS. This is our 25th January issue. We keep interested in what we do by trying to make every issue better than the one before. We never tire of hearing our friends and neighbors say they enjoy the product of our labors. Perhaps the most beloved component in each Paradise NEWS’ print edition (which can also be read online) is the most comprehensive directory of local Arts and Leisure activities and Events calendar you will find anywhere. Each issue contains advice columns from local experts in Construction, Fishing Health, Pet Health, Property Law, Real Estate and Trusts and Taxes. Some of our writers have been with us for more than a decade, like feature writer Steve Traiman and astrologer Sarah Lyons. Some are newer. Nanette Wiser, our Downtown Concierge columnist, is also our entertainment writer. Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones, has been doing a remarkable job with his Good Advice column since his introduction in August, relieving us from having to include a spiritual message in this column. Our decade old website www.paradisenewsfl.com has been updated to a mobile-friendly Word Press platform, and contains a veritable wealth of community information. When you read the magazine online, all the web addresses are active links that you can click for more details. Our online networking coordinator, who has been with us more than five years, puts together a weekly electronic newsletter that gets emailed Thursdays to a growing list of subscribers. Save a sea turtle and throw away those artificial jellyfish. Every year countless turtles mistake discarded plastic bags for their staple food,
jellyfish. Plastic bags, along with plastic water bottles and other debris find their way into our local Florida waterways. Millions of plastic objects and trillions of micro-plastics are distributed throughout the world’s oceans.
There are numerous ways to reduce the impact of discarded plastic in Florida waterways. The most powerful is to reduce your plastic consumption by using reusable water bottles, silverware and bags. When you do find yourself with a single use plastic container, make sure it’s recycled at a local recycling facility.
This Christmas season, a local couple spent four hours collecting trash on the shores of St. Petersburg. They collected five full trash bags of debris, almost 70 lbs. Items found included dozens of plastic bags, discarded rope, plastic bottles, lighters, flip flops, and two wooden chairs. Properly disposed, these items are no longer exposed to solar UV radiation, reducing their potential to create micro-particles and their chances of ending up in a local turtle or bird.

The St. Pete Beach Seafood & Music Festival returns for its second year to Corey Ave. on February 1-3, 2019. Come out and relax for the weekend and enjoy a blending of delicious foods, live music and shopping a marketplace of arts, crafts and fine products. Hours are Friday from Noon - 10pm, Saturday 11am - 10pm and Sunday 11am - 6pm. Admission is FREE. Hosted by the Corey Area Business Association. Meals are cooked onsite using only the freshest ingredients and seafood dishes using sustainable ocean resources from Florida coastal waters. A house move from 7th Avenue in Pass-a-Grille began on a Friday night in mid-December after being delayed a day due to weather. They’d gotten the house 3/4 into Pass-a-Grille Way, but encountered a tree stump that was being taken
out Saturday morning. Then 2 flat tires needed to be changed or inflated. Keeping a Pass-a-Grille tradition alive.
December 11th was “Paradise NEWS Day” as Mayor Al Johnson honored Paradise NEWS for 25 years of faithful service to the city by presenting a Proclamation naming December 11, 2018, our day. (pictured above left)

SLOPPY JOE’S HAS NEW MENU ITEMS - Those crunchy creamy homemade kettle chips covered in bleu cheese, bacon bits and green onions are back on the menu at Sloppy Joe’s on the Beach. The executive chef of this iconic tavern and restaurant, Ernest Hahne, says he created the new menu based on feedback from repeat guests. The annual Gulf Beach Rotary Robbies Pancake Breakfast was huge success, with over 400 friends and neighbors enjoying a delicious

pancake and sausage breakfast in spite of a very rainy morning. More than 1,200 pancakes and 800 sausage patties were proudly served along with a lot of coffee. Plenty of Bloody Marys and Mimosas were enjoyed, and tons of toys were donated to the Red Sled for children in foster care. Thanks to the Middle Grounds Grille for cooking the pancakes so expertly and to the Gulf Beaches Rotary Club for again sponsoring this fun remembrance of Robbie’s Pancake House.

The Treasure Island / Madeira Beach Chamber of Commerce relocated recently from the round building on 107th Ave., where they have been for several years. The round building is for sale and they were offered a great deal in a two-story building at the southeast base of the John’s Pass Bridge, at the entrance to Gator’s. Chamber president Missy Hahn said the new location is the most visible and accessible location the Chamber has ever had. “Our walk-in traffic has picked up and we hardly even have a sign posted yet. We have more space than we need, in fact, we plan to sublease some offices to chamber members. I would love to have an electronic sign that we can use to advertise for members. Traffic stops here whenever the bridge opens and we have a captive audience. It would really allow us to maximize the benefit for chamber members of our prime Gulf Boulevard location. On the other hand, it may be more than our chamber can afford. We are a chamber full of mostly smaller businesses. Our billionaire benefactor moved on 5 years ago. Five St. Petersburg restauranteurs have joined forces, pooling their time, talents and other resources into a new waterfront dining venture. The

Big Catch at Salt Creek will open at the southeast St. Pete site of the recently-closed Fish Tales. The organization is called Boys in the Burg, LLC.. The five principals are all lifetime residents of St. Petersburg. Together, they’ve been feeding locals for more than a half century. Business consultant Mario Farias, a partner in the Pipo’s and Callaloo restaurants, Larry Munch, whose family diner has been in business for 66 years, Jon Reno LaBudde, St. Pete realtor/developer who has owned and operated numerous restaurants, and other businesses for decades, are joined by Pete Boland and Ian Taylor, longtime friends and business partners whose most recent project is The Galley. Taylor, the build-out specialist, has already removed the Fish Tales bar and has begun building a new one on the other side of the outdoor dining area. Between 1989 and 2001, LaBudde had a nightclub on Beach Drive called the Big Catch. It was successful downtown early on and many people retain fond memories of the original Big Catch. If attendance at the Big Catch “pre-thanksgiving” party LaBudde threw at Trophy Fish or the 43rd annual holiday party on December 23rd at the Vinoy Golf Club were any indication, it would seem such a following still exists. We wish the “Big Catch” Team the greatest success.
Council Kills Controversial (Bezu) Blue Lotus Condo tower project. City council members, acting as the Community Redevelopment Agency, voted 4-4 on a motion to approve the 19-story, 18-unit Blue Lotus, formerly called Bezu. A majority vote was required for approval. Charlie Gerdes voted in favor of the project along with Ed Montanari, Amy Foster and Brandi Gabbard. Gina Driscoll, Darden Rice, Lisa Wheeler-Bowman & Steve Kornell voted against it creating a tie.The project has ping-ponged between city panels since last December. Both the review commission and the council rejected the original plans, which called for a tower nearly 300 feet tall

St. Petersburg has voted to ban plastic straws and polystyrene foam containers, in some cases. The ban on plastic straws will apply to food and beverage vendors in the city, excludes hospitals, grocery stores, and convenience stores. Straws upon request began January 1. In April 2019, the city will begin issuing warnings to non-compliers. On January 1, 2020, use of plastic straws should end. The plastic straw ordinance affects an estimated 656 businesses. Polystyrene containers for take out purposes, outdoor bar-b-ques etc. are also affected.

Dunedin City Commission approved 100 Percent Clean, Renewable Energy Resolution Dunedin City Commission voted on a resolution committing to 100 percent clean, renewable energy. The resolution established a goal of powering municipal operations entirely with renewable sources of energy by 2035, and communitywide by 2050. Dunedin joined nearly 100 cities across the nation to commit to a 100 percent clean, renewable energy future by a date certain. All across the U.S., cities, counties and states are making commitments to do their part to fight climate and completely free themselves of fossil fuels and the air pollution created when burned for energy. If the City Commission passes the resolution, Dunedin would join five other cities in Florida - Largo and St. Petersburg also in Pinellas County, as well as Orlando, Gainesville, and Sarasota — to commit to transitioning to 100 percent renewable sources.

FEMA to insurers: No flood policies during shutdown
Dec. 27, 2018 – The Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) yesterday issued new guidelines instructing insurers not to sell or renew flood insurance policies during the partial government shutdown. The announcement took many by surprise, since last week Congress passed and the President signed legislation reauthorizing the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) through May 31, 2019. FEMA cited the Antideficiency Act (ADA) as the source for its ruling. The ADA generally prohibits federal expenditures/obligations in excess or advance of appropriations, except in cases of “emergencies involving … protection of property.”
Wreaths Across America Succeeds at Bay Pines
In its first year as a fundraising group for wreaths, the DAR Caravel Chapter exceeded its goal, sponsoring 212, chair Diana Schwarz reports. Bay Pines National Cemetery in St. Petersburg
had a total of 4,800 wreaths delivered on December 15, with its website showing 5,007 sponsored. Although still a far cry from the 34,000 gravesites to be covered, twice as many were sponsored this year – a good upward trend. About 200 volunteered to lay the wreaths, including a number of DAR Caravel Chapter members, Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber member Barry Foster, Wayne McKenney from the Kiwanis Seminole
Breakfast Club that sponsored 10 wreaths, and Jolene Bivens, who responded to the notice in Paradise News for wreath laying volunteers. Pinellas Technical College sponsored the semitrailer which drove up to Maine to pick up the wreaths and bring them to Bay Pines. The work ahead is to get many more grave sites covered at Bay Pines National Cemetery next year.

EVERYTHING IS NEGOTIABLE!
This isn’t just true in real estate contract writing. It’s true in general in America. Technically, it’s called “Freedom of Contract.” (Almost) anything the two sides to a deal can agree to is perfectly acceptable, assuming the basic transaction isn’t illegal.
What that means to buyers and sellers of real estate is that either party can agree to pay the closing costs. Either side can pay the commissions. Either side can choose the law firm or title company to do the closing. Either party can pay the taxes, recording fees, doc stamps, etc., etc., etc. It often just comes down to money. There is a “traditional” starting point, that is, assumptions based on common practice for who pays for what. If you move charges around, it can be compensated for by changing the purchase price (or some other charge) to balance it out. Sometimes, even a difference in the money is worth it, if something is important to you.

These principles also apply to non-monetary terms. For sellers, the terms of the listing contract can be varied. You may want to preserve the right to sell your property to a friend, relative, or contact you showed the property to prior to signing a listing, and not be responsible for the commission. You might need extra time to move out of a long-held homestead after closing. You may need a contingency, which means you don’t have to close if you haven’t identified your new home and closed on it yet prior to this closing. A buyer may need a contingency for the sale of their existing home, if she needs the proceeds to pay for this purchase. Or, a buyer might need to move into the property early, for various practical reasons.
Although there are good reasons to avoid possession changing at a different time than the actual closing, you may still need to do so, and for good reasons. In such cases,
it is usually possible to identify the biggest risks in such a plan, and design contract language to work around them. This is part of what a real estate attorney can help you with. We have seen many, many different transactions go down, with all kinds of complications, and we know both where the greatest dangers are, and how to avoid them, sometimes by the way you structure the transaction, and sometimes with skillful drafting of contract language. But one thing is always true. You can’t properly manage these risks and complications after the deal is written. It is always best to talk your situation over with a real estate attorney BEFORE you sign that listing, sale, lease or other contract.

Another Year, and more Challenges for the Building Industry…
It’s hard to believe that 2019 is already here, and Santa is back at the North Pole resting up for next year. Spring is just around the corner, and many families that come through our model center each year have now decided that it’s time to build their dream home here along the Pinellas beach communities. Again, new home costs have increased due to inflation and supply & demand, and unfortunately in 2019 it is predicted that another round of increases will take place, due to new FEMA demands after Hurricane Michael. As the new federal regulations are not in place yet, these costs will not affect new home pricing this season, but certainly will for 2020 and beyond.
After the devastating pictures that we all saw in Mexico Beach after Michael, it only stands to reason that the building industry cannot be allowed to construct homes using yesterday’s codes. When the big one hits Pinellas, we will see the same devastation from the existing homes built decades ago. It’s been 97 years since a hurricane came directly ashore in Pinellas County, but the odds are very probable of course. I hope to
have 25 to 30 years left to chase my grandchildren around, and I hope that I do not witness a Pinellas direct hit, but the odds are probably going to catch up with us.
Industry leaders expect FEMA will enact stronger standards for homes, for new construction and major remodeling.
Some beach jurisdictions are enacting even more stringent codes than FEMA requires. The so called “50% Rule” may become history, so remodeling homes using this loophole may go the way of the dinosaurs. I can’t say I’m against that, seeing that if / when the storm comes, those family dollars now being spent for remodeling will be wasted as they will then be required to start over with an elevated home, at tomorrows costs.
It’s also predicted that this tourist season a record number of snowbirds will become homeowners along the beach communities. I personally enjoy seeing new homes being constructed here by various builders in the many Pinellas communities. And, thankfully, these newly constructed homes will
weather the storm, being constructed under newer stricter codes to protect the homeowner’s investment. Then too, these families that are now constructing new homes will appreciate many years of family enjoyment living in a new more modern home, as well as the peace of mind knowing the security of a new home, raised above the flood plain and constructed with today’s more stringent standards.

Director John Alexander told Paradise News, “The film made its Florida premiere on Veteran’s Day, where it got kudos at the Et Cultura Film Festival’s inaugural Listen Up Film Series in St. Pete.” Filmmakers JC Guest and Alexander were in attendance and participated in a Q&A after the film, moderated by Scott Elliot of WMNF Community Radio for his “Listen Up” show. After winning the ‘Film of the Festival Spirit’ Award at its world premiere at Raindance Film Festival in London, “This is Love,” broke all-time records in ticket sales at the Tallgrass Film Festival, Oct. 17-21 in Wichita, KS, where the film played to a sold-out 1,200+ seat theater with a full standing ovation, a first for the festival. The movie also has just been announced Winner of the Best International Documentary competition at the Rome Independent Film Festival in Italy. “This Is Love” is being released in selective cities and has begun announcing its February Black History Month screenings, including its Portugal premiere at the Capital Filmmakers Festival in Lisbon, and its New Mexico premiere at the Santa Fe Film Festival. Mick Fleetwood Interview As an editor with Billboard magazine – the music industry ‘Bible’ – from 1968 through 1979, this feature writer was fortunate to see, hear and review Mick Fleetwood and the original Fleetwood Mac. Mick was gracious enough to provide these answers to his involvement with the band, and “This is Love.” PN: How, why and when did you get involved with the project as executive producer and co-star? MF: “I became involved with the project through my friend and band mate, Gretchen Rhodes. She is the sister of the film’s producer, Shawn Rhodes. I saw the potential in the film as soon as they came to Maui to interview me. The content of the film is something that I have seen and somewhat experienced either personally or vicariously through other people throughout my years in the business.”
PN: How satisfied are you with the finished film and the very positive response with accolades at major festivals and from many critics? MF: “I am extremely proud of how the film turned out. Shawn and John worked extremely hard to stay true to the narrative core of the Love family. This is a great story on so many levels. It is brilliant to see that ‘This Is Love’ is being recognized for the special film it is. It is well deserved for sure.” PN: “On a professional note, how do you feel about the staying power of Fleetwood Mac after more than 50 years? MF: “Fleetwood Mac has so many timeless songs written by amazingly talented individuals. Some might say it’s a ‘right time, right place’ sort of thing. That may be true, but it’s been the combination of people and personalities and passion over the years that has kept us going. We just hands down love what we do.”
Story Behind the Film “This is Love” is a feature music documentary that follows obscure soul singer Rudy Love – an unsung hero of soul — whose experience in the music industry over the decades encapsulates a quintessential struggle of African American artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Rudy Love has been making music all of his life, even though it has all been taken away. From his first contract fraudulently signed when he was 17, Love has been losing his music to publishers and recording labels ever since. His voice has been woven into hits from every decade since the ‘60’s, yet he lives unknown in Wichita, Kansas. But that doesn’t concern him: all he wants to do is sing. His name circles among musicians like a ghost, an unseen guru who’s been influencing listeners whether they know it or not. Artists from Jay Z to George Clinton herald him as an unsung hero of soul. Why haven’t you heard of him? Because the music business is vicious, and Rudy only cares about “Love.” While his music seemingly had gotten buried into total obscurity, it has repeatedly resurfaced in far corners of the world overseas, particularly in places where soul music is experiencing a resurgence, such as in the UK.

Key Team Vignettes Director John Alexander is a filmmaker from Los Angeles and “This is Love” is his debut feature documentary. Alexander interned with Sam Raimi on “Drag Me to Hell” (Cannes 2009) before graduating from Harvard University in 2011, where he was awarded the McCord Arts Prize. He edited “One Way to Drown”, produced by Brett Ratner, and “Running Wild” with Alden Ehrenreich, and oversaw post-production of “Shut Up And Drive” (Tribeca 2015). His feature directorial debut “Bender” won Outstanding Cast at Tallgrass Film Festival 2016 and has gone on to cable distribution in the US as well as sales in China, South Africa, and Europe. He is currently in development on another feature narrative. Mick Fleetwood is a British musician and actor best known for his role as drummer and co-founder of the rock band Fleetwood Mac in 1967. The movie crew filmed an original interview and performance with Fleetwood at his venue in Maui, Hawaii, which makes its debut in the film. Sinbad is an American comedian and actor famous for his roles in Jingle All the Way and The Sinbad Show, and has performed alongside Rudy Love for many years. He is featured in the film in a new interview as well as never before seen archival performance footage. Sinbad is also starring in Rel, a new series for Fox this year.
George Clinton (Parliament/Funkadelic) is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee who is largely credited with inventing funk music. He is featured in the film in an extensive never before seen interview and performances with Rudy Love. As 2018 is Clinton’s last year performing live before retiring, his role in the film is particularly timely. He lives in Tallahassee. Norman Jay MBE is a British DJ who is renowned for his Good Times Sound System, and for coining the term “rare groove”. He is featured in a never before seen interview and will be re-releasing a mix of a Rudy Love track this year. Summing up, Alexander told Paradise News,“ ’This is Love’ really has been the ultimate collaborative experience. We had always admired the work of Fleetwood, Clinton, and Sinbad, and the film brought us filmmakers together with these icons of their industries to actually make something original together from scratch. It is amazing how you can put rock stars, comedians and filmmakers together in the same room and really get things done, thanks to the incredible leadership of Executive Producer Shawn Rhodes and Co-Producer Gretchen Rhodes. Appropriately, it is a film ultimately about collaboration and family love, and I think the result is visually and musically something very special.” - PN

Seven Practices for a Happy New You in the New Year I love the sentiment of the quote because it illustrates the fact that the content of our mind determines our experience in life. The metaphor of the blackboard, chalk, and eraser points out that it is we, and we alone, who have absolute control over the content of our mind and therefore, how our thoughts and beliefs out-picture themselves in our daily life.
Below are seven practices that I have established for myself as I enter the New Year. I invite you to consider trying 1. Open your mind to the new possibilities that lie in the unknown. Be willing to try new things. Make a conscious effort to get out of your comfort zone; this can include pursuing new career/job opportunities or learning/skill activities that you may have never considered before.
It can also include unexplored relationships or—for that matter—even new types of food and entertainment. With the right perspective, you can consider stepping outside of your box of your known world as a great opportunity and welcome it with open arms. 2. Forgive. As long as you live in a human skin, forgiveness is the one practice that you’ll need to master because nothing will keep you stuck in the past more effectively than resentment and non-forgiveness. Think of it this way: What (or who) you don’t forgive, you drag into the new year with you. To forgive is to erase the negative energy that keeps you from entering the new year with a clean “blackboard”; this includes forgiving yourself as well.
3. Set realistic goals & write them down. Goal setting is a vital component of creating anything new. However, it’s important not to set yourself up for failure by declaring goals that are so lofty—so far out of your box— that you know, in your heart, can never be reached. The practice is to come to the edge of your comfort zone and lean over just enough to make yourself

them for yourself. Take what works and work it, and discard what doesn’t. If we don’t want to drag the past year into the New Year we don’t have to. However, we have work to do because no one can alter the content of our minds—it is an inside job. We and we alone hold both the eraser and the chalk in our hand. How we use them will determine what our experience of the upcoming year shall be.
uncomfortable, taking small, achievable steps that allow you to see still the possibility of arriving at the finish line. Writing out your goals helps to kinesthetically “inscribe them on the blackboard” of your conscious and unconscious mind.
4. Observe & challenge old habit patterns that keep you stuck in the yuck. All habits are merely mind-energy set in motion through a specific type of behavior. In and of itself, habit energy is not necessarily bad. The key is to be conscious enough of your habits, that when they don’t serve your wholeness to challenge them. Once identified, the practice is to see your old habit(s) as “neutral energy” seeking expression through the path of least resistance. With awareness, you can make an effort to intentionally redirect habit energy in a new direction—one that serves you well in the new year; this is using the “eraser and chalk” in a compelling way.
5. Practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is the experience of bringing your thinking mind into alignment with your body, to be aware of what is happening around you and in you in the present moment. Mindfulness is essential as you enter a new year because the present moment is always where life is unfolding. Practicing mindfulness places the eraser and chalk in your hand; it’s where your authentic power awaits.
6. Seek a cheerleader who will support you in reaching your goals. Doing all the aforementioned things can be a daunting task to take on alone. Enlist the support of a trusted friend or mentor who is able to support you in seeing and moving toward the vision you hold for the new you in the new year. However, also be sure that person is someone who can and will hold you accountable for doing what you say you are going to do.
7. Set aside time daily to spend in the presence of your Higher Power. When you make room daily to partner with your Higher Power (or whatever name by which you refer to It) doing all the previously mentioned practices seem to flow with grace and ease. Why? Because you are one with the source of all that is good and you can trust that It knows what you need to know when you need to know it. The practice is to believe It and follow Its lead and have faith that the upcoming year will be the best year of your life.
In summary: The blackboard of 2019 has yet to be inscribed upon, and it awaits your mental, emotional, and spiritual imprint. May your exit from 2018 be gentle and complete and may your entry into the new year be smooth and intentional. May you always remember that you, and you alone, hold the eraser and chalk in your hand. Now the adventure begins! Happy new you, my friends.

Seafood Festivals have proven popular, as well as the Craft and Art Festivals held in early December, late January, April and June. Now that the craft shows and the markets are able to co-exist, attendance has been excellent. People who find the Coastal Cottage when they visit the Craft show are coming back at other occasions to browse and dine on Corey Avenue.

Ken and Gail with Our Serenity have been building and repurposing furniture for over 8 years. They love creating something different and unique, a piece that is one of a kind. The ‘Thrill’ Continues By Nanette Wiser
On Feb. 15 th at 8pm, the iconic music of BB King comes alive when the original BB King Blues Band comes to town, featuring the one and only Tito Jackson. The concert is at downtown St. Pete’s premiere waterfront venue, Duke Energy Center for the Arts – Mahaffey Theater. For over half a century, BB King and BB King’s Blues Band defined the blues to the world, averaging over 250 sold out concerts per year, with classics like “The Thrill is Gone,” “Every day I have the Blues,” “How Blues Can You Get,” and “Why I Sing The Blues.” Bandleader James “Boogaloo” Bolden played with BB King 35 years, and is still going strong on trumpet/lead vocals/backing vocals. Born in Houston, TX, James Bolden began his musical training under the guidance of Edmund C. Broussard. Bolden later seized the opportunity to study classical trumpet under Houston Symphony trumpeter Richard Schafer. James went on to play with local union bands that performed with a wide array of artists such as Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes, Temptations, Supremes, Spinners, and James Brown. Bolden eventually was given the opportunity to join the Duke Ellington Orchestra where he thrived for years. Bolden later joined the band of B.B. King and became bandleader during a stint of over 35 years. James Bolden now continues his association with B.B. King by joining B.B. King’s Band as bandleader.
Legendary superstar and pop music icon, Tito Jackson, of the pop super group The Jackson 5 and The Jackson’s, has just released his third solo album “Tito Time,” featuring “One Way Street,” “When the Magic Happens,” featuring Jocelyn Brown, and “Get it Baby,” featuring Big Daddy Kane. Tito has just teamed up with the legendary BB King’s Blues Band to tour and promote his newest album; along with carrying on the legendary music of The Jackson 5, The Jackson’s, and BB King. Jackson joined the B.B. King Blues Band in 2017 where they rehearsed in Memphis, home to the B.B. King Museum and the legendary American blues singer’s grave. Tito is a blues man at hear and said, “I’ve always been a blues player ever since the day I picked up the guitar…B.B.King was my hero when I was just a young man, maybe 7 or 8 years old.” In honor of B.B. The students, ages 5 - 42, paint in an Abstract Expressionism style, which is based on color, movement, texture and feelings. When a student sells a painting, they receive half of the funds, with the other half going back into the non-profit for future events and art supplies. St. Petersburg Ballet Conservatory held its first
holiday concerts in December with 54 students participating in a “Winter Showcase & Nutcracker Excerpts.” The 9-month old 501(c)(3) not-for-profit which launched in March 2018. at 1500 58th St. S. Gulfport, FL 33707. They put on an impressive show, and the parents of the school’s students were raving about the progress their children are getting there. The program announced a summer Intensive program June 10 – August 10 with auditions to be held in January. This is a group worth supporting with your time, talents or donations. They have a wish list and have naming rights available for substantial donations. Jean Schlumberger JEWELS OF THE IMAGINATION Jean Schlumberger was born in 1907 in Mulhouse, France. Although he showed talent for drawing as a child, Schlumberger’s parents— prosperous textile manufacturers—steered him toward a career in weaving or finance. Following his own path, in his 20s he found a job in Paris with an art publishing company. There he became involved with avant-garde artistic circles, including the Surrealists. As a member of that group he knew Salvador Dalí, Leonor Fini, Jean Cocteau, and Man Ray. Schlumberger’s fascination with their dream-like imagery and calculated strangeness influenced his jewelry design. During his time in Paris, Schlumberger also came into contact with Elsa Schiaparelli, the celebrated clothing designer—who was also a member of the Surrealist circle. He initially designed buttons for her garments, but went on to create many iconic pieces of jewelry for her. ABOUT - MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS ST. During World War II, after serving in the French army until 1939, Schlumberger worked as a clothing designer for the Manhattan-based fashion house Chez Ninon. He later opened a small jewelry shop in New York with his childhood friend Nicolas Bongard. In 1942 he and Bongard both enlisted in the Free French Forces. At the war’s end, they returned to Manhattan and reopened their shop. Also, during the war Schlumberger met Lucien “Luc” Bouchage, a talented photographer and kindred spirit who would become his life partner. In 1956, Schlumberger joined Tiffany & Co. as a signature designer. Both he and Bongard were appointed vice presidents of an independent department nestled in the Fifth Avenue flagship store’s mezzanine. At Tiffany & Co. he enjoyed total creative control over his designs and had access to the finest and rarest gemstones on the market. Schlumberger flourished in this environment, greatly benefitting from the company’s high profile and well-heeled clientele. Throughout his career Schlumberger displayed a gift for transforming everyday objects and living creatures—particularly flowers, insects, and sea life—into abstracted yet lively designs. Most unusually, rather than making sketches and then refining them into finished designs, Schlumberger tended to produce a series of precise line drawings which explored a particular motif. Though simply executed, these images reflect his keen intellect, unerring eye for design, and remarkable ability to adapt natural forms to suit his needs. After selecting his favorite designs from among his initial drawings, Schlumberger would often make completed images of proposed projects to offer his clients. Beautifully finished, these presentation pieces were often treasured as works of art themselves. When his clients had chosen a final design, Schlumberger turned the manufacturing process over to his friend and business partner, Nicolas Bongard. He employed a variety of skilled craftsmen who were adept at bringing these vibrant and innovative designs to fruition. From the earliest days of his career, Schlumberger boasted a remarkable and faithful clientele which included aristocrats, socialites, style icons, Hollywood stars, and fashion critics and editors from both Europe and America. Among his biggest fans were Princess Marina of Kent; socialite Gloria Vanderbilt; fashion maven Diana Vreeland; style icon Nancy “Slim” Keith; First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, and actresses Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. In many ways, Schlumberger’s jewelry embodies the wealth, glamor, and sophistication of the Jet-Set Age. Without doubt, Schlumberger’s greatest patron was Mrs. Rachel “Bunny” Mellon. The pair met when she shopped at his second jewelry shop in Manhattan during the 1950s. Their common interests in art, nature, travel, jewelry, and French culture helped reinforce a long and enduring friendship. Fishing report Inshore - The Sheepshead bite has been great this week. We are seeing lots of Silver Trout and Whiting being caught around the Jetties of Johns Pass and from the beaches especially on live shrimp weighted to the bottom with about a 2ot hook. Black Drum are still around. The Redfish bite has been good in the back bay waters around the oyster bars especially on the full moon tides. Night bite has been hot. Near shore - This is the last weekend for Gag Grouper fishing action before they close at 12:01am on January 1st 2019 making December 31st the last day to land keeper gags until June first 2019. The weather for Saturday, Sunday and Monday looks perfect for hunting gag grouper near shore or offshore! Also, the gag bite has been great when the weather has allowed us to get out and it’s been clear enough for the gags to feed well. Behind the fronts we had a few slow days due to the water being so stirred up, however, for the most part the gag action has been wild! Also, The Hogfish bite has been steady. The Mangrove Snapper action and lane snapper have both been great too. Red Grouper will remain open into January so after the first when Gags close the focus will shift to hogfish, red grouper, mangrove snapper & anything else that is feeding well! SPB Library Friend’s Baskets a big success!
Holiday Season Baskets Silent Auction sponsored by the Friends of the St Pete Beach Library earned a total $1,243, Auction Chair Ron Waters reports. The 16 book baskets – including 3 donated by library patrons – earned an average $62, with highest bids for Paris at $100, FL Authors Signed Books for $88 and Women at War for $80. The 8 “buy it now” baskets earned $245 of the total, with Chanukah the highest at $50. Other themes included Christmas, The Civil War, Baseball, Florida Cooking, WWII Europe, Wine, Art, Authors of Florida (First Editions), A Dogs’ Basket, International Cooking, WWII Pacific, and Asian Cooking.
