We are thrilled to feature our favorite private school as the cover story this month. Admiral Farragut Academy was the catalyst that drew us to St. Pete Beach when our son, Jordan, reached high school age. Jordan liked the school but did not like living there his freshman year, so we moved close enough for him to be a day student. His four years “at Farragut “taught him how to learn on his own, and he has never stopped. It has been 19 years since we previously featured Admiral Farragut Academy on our cover, at the turn of the millenium when the campuses consolidated. The new Fine Arts building is just the latest addition to this great school, that now has a large female contingent and serves Pre-K through High School. The gala Reach For The Stars Event sounds like an occasion not to be missed. They also have open houses in April for prospective new students. If you have been thinking about a private education for your children or grandchildren, this is a world-class resource, right in the neighborhood. Thanks to all who responded to the Bus Rapid Transit article in our February issue. The plan is definitely faulty and impactful on many of our lives if we find ourselves on 1st Avenues north and south frequently. In case you missed it, it was on page 31 of the February issue which can now be found in our online archives as well as on selected racks (like in front of Chill on Corey Ave.,) or search BRT on www.PSTA.net. Most of you know we are celebrating the 25th Anniversary of service to the community, and we thank the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce for recognizing our efforts over the past quarter century with an award for a quarter century of service to the community.

LETTERS I really enjoy reading Paradise News and love the fact that it covers so much about our area. I very much appreciate your hard work and dedication in making Paradise News the best magazine anywhere and I look forward to its arrival every month. I have one area of improvement I would like to suggest. By the time I receive Paradise News here in Broadwater, a fair amount of interesting events and activities have already happened. This can be frustrating as I often look in the magazine to see what’s happening only to find out an event that sounded like fun already happened. Regards, Phil Don’t recycle Paradise NEWS until the new one comes! Thanks Phil for the kind remarks. The new issue goes online on our website near the first, when it also goes to the printer. It takes the printer a week (if we went on the 15th, it would take 2 weeks) and the post office takes another week to get it to you. Since the post office delivers Paradise NEWS mid-month, we try to cover all events before then in the prior month’s issue. Hang onto each issue until the next one comes and that concern should vanish. You can visit www.paradisenewsfl.com and take a peek at the new issue online, or subscribe (for FREE) to our weekly Thursday newsletter with the Top Five things happening each weekend. Others have told us they keep

their calendar with them as they read Paradise News to note upcoming events they wish to attend . Tampa Bay Watch strives to provide high-quality, inclusive summer camp programs for ALL of our community’s youth, and your generous participation in our summer camp scholarship campaign makes this possible. Help us reach our goal of $10,000, which will change the lives of 16 future environmental stewards by sending them to our summer camps on full scholarship and provide for the resources that are necessary to power our summer camps. Whether it’s the camper’s first time on a boat or first time holding a sea star, we believe every child deserves the invaluable experience of Tampa Bay Watch summer camp - and we know you do, too! Give today, change a child’s life forever! This is why we’re asking for your help in providing scholarship funds that will send 16 bright, curious, and deserving children to our summer camps. Your gift today allows us to continue making a positive impact on students in our community while providing them with the knowledge and experiences that inspire them to be lifelong stewards of their environment. Thank you, - Peter A. Clark, President

A New Pier for Everyone

The new St. Pete Pier was designed with criteria established by a citizen-led group, and unprecedented community input. There are so many varied facets to the new Pier, it truly will have “something for everyone.” Whether you want to ride your bike along the waterfront, fish on the deck at the Pier Head, take your kids or grandkids to the playground, learn about the Tampa Bay estuary or simply enjoy the views, the Pier will offer a myriad of activities.

This is not your grandmother’s Pier. This Pier will have ride-share bikes, an electric tram, solar covered parking to provide power to the Pier, and electric vehicle charging stations. There are new breakwaters to help calm occasional rough seas, protect sea grasses, and expand Spa Beach. This Pier will be higher than the previous one, designed for sea level rise with buildings designed to withstand significant storm events. LED lights will illuminate the Pier at night. The Discovery Center will offer environmental education to all visitors. The concrete from the old Pier has been repurposed to shore up the bulkhead around Albert Whitted Airport.

All major tenants have been selected: • TEAK, Inc. will offer an upscale restaurant (Teak) a rooftop bar (Teaki) and a cafe (Driftwood Cafe) • Doc Ford’s Rum Bar and Grille will be located on the south side of the Pier Approach. The restaurant’s name and theme are based on the novels by New York Times bestselling author Randy Wayne White. • United Park Services (UPS) will operate the Pavilion Cafe, which will offer “grab and go” food items as well as other, healthy, interesting and traditional food selections. UPS will also operate the Bait Shop at the Pier Head. • Tampa Bay Watch will operate the Discovery Center, mid-way out to the Pier Head. They will offer dynamic interactive exhibits that will educate the public and showcase the Tampa Bay estuary, as well as classroom space for school field trips and summer camp programs. They will also provide management services for the center as an event venue for corporate meetings and special events.

PROPERTY LAW

Knowledge is Power

Economists describe the real estate market as “inefficient.” That is partly because information about individual properties has never been easily available to a national audience, the way prices for more fungible products, such as oil, soybeans or pork bellies have. While modern services such as Zillow, Trulia, and Realtor.com, along with smart phone apps and other technical innovations, somewhat level the field in terms of access to information, properties themselves vary hugely from one to another, no two locations are truly equivalent, and financing complications exert an exaggerated influence on transactions. Those and many other factors will always make the property market inefficient.

Real estate agents, on the other hand, are part of the solution, as they help make that

14

MARCH 2019 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

Travels through Property Law By Tom Brodersen, Esq.

market manageable for consumers. Realtors are extremely hard-working people who compete every day for the attention of buyers and sellers, and must diligently prepare for the task by continuously building their knowledge and professional skills in order to be most valuable to the public in need of assistance.

While that training is also improved by modern technology (such as distance learning and web-based programs), most people traditionally learn faster and more easily from live, human instructors who sense when more explanation is needed, and can immediately answer questions. That is why I have started a local real estate school. Much of my time is spent explaining the complexities of real estate law and practice and the many

laws and rules that affect the ownership and use of property. I try to keep track of the best, most knowledgeable and diligent agents in the market to send my clients to when they want to use agents. I try to improve the real estate profession by helping those agents build their skills.

I have been privileged to enjoy varied and extensive experience in this field over the years, but the profession of law (and licensing as a real estate broker) require me to “give back” by contributing to the improvement of the field. The more that buyers, sellers, and real estate agents know about the potential pitfalls involved in transactions, the fewer complications will develop in closing these transactions. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019, the St. Pete Beach Library is facing vital major repairs including a new roof and a new air conditioning / heating system, among other key fixes.

The City Commission is currently considering RFQs (Requests for Qualifications) from major contractors. The Commission will make a recommendation to the Budget Committee to include key funding in the upcoming fiscal 2020 budget that could easily exceed $1.5 million. Four years ago the Commission had approved construction of a new Library, selected an architect and had planned to include about $2 million in the budget. Unfortunately an over-age and overworked sanitary sewer and stormwater system was a more urgent matter and those funds went toward long overdue repairs, sidetracking a new library.

Your Library now serves more than 12,700 cardholders from SPB and surrounding towns, and last year counted more than 83,800 individual visits. The library was built in 1969 and opened to the public before man landed on the moon. Obviously there are some structural issues with any building of this age, including the roof, HVAC components, water intrusion through the walls and windows.

There are also internal needs to be addressed such as electrical outlets and lighting, outdated receptacles throughout the library that were once used for central vacuuming.

The tile in the kitchen is original and there’s very inadequate storage space. The carpet was installed in 1992 and a close estimate says that 2.5 million people have walked on that carpet in that time — the same carpet toddlers sit on for story time and to read their books.

As the hurricane season approaches, we are in danger of not only losing print materials but further damaging an already ancient structure.

This is why it’s essential that every reader of Paradise News who uses the Library contact your City Commissioner – if you live in St. Pete Beach, or Mayor Al Johnson if you are a nearby town Library card-holder – emails available online at www.stpetebeach.org.

Let them know what your St. Pete Beach Library means to you and your family, and urge them to support the vital repairs and have the Budget Committee include the anticipated $1.5 million plus in the Fiscal Year 2020 Budget.

The Friends of the Library Board – which helped raise the funds for the original Library, is fully committed to this project and urges your support.

YOUR St. Pete Beach Library

Needs You NOW!!! Your Library needs immediate repairs. The roof is leaking, water is seeping through the walls, the carpet is close to 30 years old (and children sit on it in their section of the library!).

St. Pete Beach residents, PLEASE, contact your commissioner and mayor, and if you’re not a St. Pete Beach resident but a Library user, the mayor, to tell them how urgent the need is to allocate $1.5 Million for Library repairs in next fiscal year’s budget (Oct. 2019 -Sept. 2020) that will be discussed and decided upon starting in April.

YOUR St. Pete Beach Library needs YOU NOW!!!

Opportunities are usually disguised as hard work, so most people don’t recognize them. – Ann Landers

Mediterranean

by Peter A. Roos

Deli & Grille

It’s been more than decade since Paradise NEWS introduced you to Odise’ Armata, an enterprising young man who had opened the first air-conditioned produce shop in St. Pete Beach. One of the most industrious young entrepreneurs in our readership area, Odise’ (O-dis-say) added a Boars Head Deli with Gyro Sandwiches, Subs, Platters and Salads and catering trays of veggies, salads and Mediterranean specialties as his produce shop grew. Odise’s wife Mirela, who used to help him when she first arrived from Albania, opened Mirela’s Talent Salon next door.During the summer of 2018, Odise’ expanded the kitchen, adding a grille, oven and a commercial exhaust hood. Where he used to display most of his produce, he added a few more seats and tables. You can still get a fresh tomato, lettuce or onions to go, along with a pint of olives, Feta cheese and a pound of Boars Head to go at the best prices in town, but it is time to be thinking about this spot more as a restaurant than a produce shop or deli. The expanded kitchen allows a wider variety of hot dishes to be offered including homemade Greek specialties like Pastitsio, Moussaka, Shish Kebob & Stuffed Peppers, even a variety of vegetarian items like homemade Falafel, Spinach Pie and others, that can be heated and enjoyed in the dining room or packaged to go. From 4 until 7 pm, these entrees and others including Gyro Platter, Chicken w/Vegetables & Mediterranean Appetizer Platter are offered as an early dinner option with salad and bread for around $11.50.

GOLF T THE MOC!

They still make the best Gyro south of Tarpon Springs, now available with French fries and a beverage for about $10. You ArR going to love their homemade Lemon Chicken soup, generous Greek Salads with or without a scoop of homemade potato salad, but the real treasures in this hidden gem are the incredibly healthy and delicious salads made fresh daily from locally sourced fresh ingredients. Healthy salads like Quinoa, Tabouleh, Spinach Orzo, Potato and Pasta Salad, Salsa, Beets, Hummus, Tzatziki and Dolmadhes (Stuffed Grape Leaves), prepared fresh without preservatives almost every day. There is also a selection of Mediterranean wines, which may be consumed on premises by the glass or bottle or carried out. There is also quite a selection of imported grocery items, some ready to eat, some frozen and some refrigerated. Your guests will love what the Mediterranean Deli and Grille can provide in platters for parties. Boars Head cold cuts and cheeses, Mediterranean or fresh vegetable platters, and party sized servings of salads even vegans will love. Ask for a menu or look online ww.SPBproduceanddeli.com. You may also see the dessert case. Fresh ingredients and family recipes combine to make some of the finest desserts on the beach: Tiramisu, Cannoli and Chocolate Baklava Cheese Cake. Odise’ suggests you call in advance for faster service on to-go orders and a day or two ahead for catering and party trays, when possible. Hours vary slightly by season, but stop by any time you see the OPEN sign on, seven days a week across the road from the PCI Resort, at 6355 Gulf Blvd. 727-564-0101. Be sure to tell them you read about them in Paradise NEWS.

Filled with beautiful art, gorgeous beaches, amazing restaurants. Plug it into your Map app.

Gulfport - If you haven’t been lately, or ever, this place has changed and is still one of the most beautiful towns around. You’ll find art inspired by its beauty throughout.

Year around goodness:

There are many seasonal aspects to our community, but Gulfport is an example of a town that has something to offer year around. Every Tuesday there is a Tuesday Fresh Market that takes place in the “downtown” area of Gulfport lining the sidewalks on Beach Boulevard from the Casino to the Courtyard. From 9am - 3pm during season, and 9am - 2pm summer, this is the only yearround market in the area. They offer fresh produce along with other yummy bites, local honey, kettle korn, homemade sauces etc. Along with the fabulous foods, you’ll find art and crafts made by local artists, plants, orchids, and more. This is certainly something you should add to your list of things to do Gulfport Fresh Market 3101 Beach Blvd. Gulfport FL 33707

MARCH 2019 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

Gulfport has been holding a First Friday and Second Saturday Artwalk for years. It’s the same location as the Tuesday Market, but you’ll find different offerings with additional jewelry, arts and crafts. Live music up and down, added to the fabulous selection of restaurants like pia’s and O’Maddys, there is much to see and do, and buy while you are there. In the last year, the Gulfport Merchants Chamber started offering an artist grant program, helping local artists gain a launching pad to share their art with the community.

The Gulfport Casino is home to many fantastic events, from live music with the Original Impacs, Salsa Dancing lessons, yoga, and more. Check the website for the schedulehttps://mygulfport.us/recreation/casino/

New Business

Caddys is opening their 5th location across from the Gulfport Casino, Caddy’s will no doubt bring more great food and live music to Gulfport. Opening the first week of March, Caddy’s has live music planned nightly, and has already sponsored the little league team in Gulfport.

They are proven to be a successful locally owned business with multiple locations in Tampa Bay. A welcome addition to the community! 3128 Beach Boulevard Gulfport, FL 33707 A breakfast/lunch staple in Gulfport, Stella’s, is moving. Right up the road, so don’t fret. You will still find the addictive biscuits with gravy and amazing turkey sandwiches offered by Stella’s. They have not yet moved, and they’ve started to offer a new happy hour from 2pm-4pm. Loaded Chicken Tenders for $10 and $1 off “Happy Drinks.” That makes me happy just thinking about it. Stellas - 3119 Beach Blvd. Gulfport, FL 33707

Dunkin Donuts is under development right on Gulfport Blvd, which has the locals stirring. I will take coffee however I can, but I too like to dine and shop local. A quick coffee is ok too. Gulfport historical society

announces first-ever business partnership — with the

historic peninsula Inn Last week, the Historic Peninsula Inn joined GHS as a lifetime business member, also called a “Square Mullet Sympathizer.” The Inn’s owner, Veronica Champion, said the partnership was one she wanted to cement because of the Inn’s rich local history. “The Historic Peninsula Inn has a strong history,” Champion said ‘and, as innkeepers, we want let our guests in on Gulfport’s unusual history. Partnering with the historical society simply makes sense.” The Gulfport Merchants Chamber agreed. “When I first heard that the Gulfport Historical Society was going to offer a business level membership I was thrilled and thought to myself, ‘ it just makes sense’,” GMC President Barbara Banno said. “Not only are the people, the homes and the streets we walk a part of Gulfport’s history, but so are the businesses throughout the city. Whether it be the oldest business in Gulfport or the old building where new businesses exist today, they all have a historic story to share with our community and visitors.“ “Every small town in Florida has its own attributes,” Cathy Salustri, GHS president added, “and there are lots of wonderful artsy, quirky towns out there, especially in Florida. So of course we get people who want to visit for those reasons. But ‘heritage tourism’ is a growing trend, and by helping local businesses showcase their history, GHS is helping our local businesses cater to those types of tourists. According to a 2010 US Department of Commerce

20

MARCH 2019 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

report, 68% of all travelers in the US seek out cultural heritage experiences (staying at an historic inn, visiting a museum or eating in an historic building), second only to shopping and eating out. This means not only that more than two-thirds of all visitors to Gulfport want to know about our town’s history, they’re more likely to patronize a business with publicized ties to our town’s history.” The Historic Peninsula Inn and the Gulfport Historical Society will celebrate this partnership with a new exhibit, highlighting the Inn’s history, on the first floor. The exhibit will officially open June 21 with a porch party on the back deck of the Historic Peninsula Inn, marking another first: A porch party (a monthly tradition at the Gulfport History Museum) not at the Museum. The exhibit will remain on display to the public — and, of course, to Historic Peninsula Inn guests — indefinitely. “We’re thrilled Veronica made this decision, to celebrate the Historic Peninsula Inn’s ties to Gulfport history, and that we can do it in a way that brings history out of the museum and into the community. It’s part of our ‘city as museum’ initiative,” Salustri added. “We want visitors — and our community — to realize they’re walking around a town steeped in history. History isn’t something you have to go to a museum to see; it’s something you can experience as part of your everyday life. Especially in Gulfport.” Whether you’re a business or an individual, there’s an affordable way to join the Gulfport Historical Society.

He has shared the limelight with celebrities, CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, and world leaders alike painting at prestigious venues including Grimaldi Forum in Monte Carlo, the Olympic Medals stage in Salt Lake with Brooks & Dunn, the Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders Meeting with Warren Buffett, and presidential events in Washington, DC.

RENDERING OF DESETA HALL

24

MARCH 2019 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

Our Personal Connection with Admiral Farragut Academy: When Renee and I discovered the school in 1986, it was a militaryoriented boys school with a strong connection to the Navy. The St. Pete location was then the second campus for Farragut with the original campus in Toms River, New Jersey. The new location was an impressive historic site, which was previously the Jungle Country Club & Hotel built by Walter Fuller with reputed connections to Al Capone. We enrolled our only child Jordan there as a boarding student in his high school freshman year while we lived in Brandon, on the other side of Tampa. The next summer we moved to St. Pete Beach so Jordan could continue as a day student. It was a fine school then and it has come a long way since. By the time Jordan graduated in 1990, there were a handful of girls in his graduating class, and females now make up a significant part of the student body. The faculty focus on developing the whole child and are involved in each student’s life in and out of class. Students are local and international with ESL classes offered to non-English speakers.

Farragut also offers a variety of clubs, 14 competitive sports, sailing, weekend trips, and other extracurricular activities. The St. Petersburg location took center stage around the turn of the millennium when the New Jersey campus closed. This event and these enhancement projects demonstrate Farragut’s continued commitment to being at the forefront of leadership and innovation. Individually, each project will amplify the educational and recreational opportunities for the students of Farragut.

Peace of Mind While You’re Away From Home! We’ve all been there. After frantically making all the plans necessary to go on that much anticipated vacation, or to that trip to our second homes, we’re finally on our way. Then the knot in our stomachs forms as we think about, “Did I remember to…,” or “Did I forget to…” Things start running through our minds, and we start to second-guess whether we really completed all of the “to-do” items on our checklists before we departed. Then, while we’re away, there’s that unexpected “no name” storm that hits, or the major hurricane making its way up the coast, and we wonder whether we made all of the necessary preparations to get our house storm or hurricane ready. Then there’s that feeling of dread wondering what our property will look like upon our return. Doesn’t sound like the scenario for a “relaxing” time away, does it? EyeWatchYourHouse.com was formed so you can actually not worry about your home while you’re away! The company founder, Leslie Hughes, has been a permanent Pinellas County resident since 1999. She and her husband have owned, operated, and managed two mom-and-pop motels in Treasure Island and St. Pete Beach, and they’ve owned and managed rental properties since the early 1980s.

They’ve experienced the anxiety that comes with being a property owner, and not knowing what you’ll find after a storm has passed through our area. Many of us have devices in our homes that allow us to adjust temperature, monitor inside and outside areas with cameras, and even control our garage doors. Such devices cannot see ceiling leaks, detect supply line leaks, drive your car, remove leaves from your pool, check the bilge pump on your boat, water your plants, or retrieve mail or packages. Furthermore, electronic devices only work if there is electricity or internet. Nothing replaces the peace of mind knowing that a reliable person is physically checking on your house, and can notify vendors in a timely manner if a problem is detected. The goal is to make your absence away from your home stress and worry-free. All house watching services are geared toward each homeowner’s specific needs, and there are plans available for short-term, as well as long-term time periods. We serve all types of residences, including townhomes, condos, and single-family homes. We are bonded and insured.

Please give us a call, or send us an email, and we will be happy to set up a free, no-obligation estimate.

Trio of New City Managers Look Ahead in Treasure Island, Madeira Beach & St. Pete Beach

STORY by STEVE TRAIMAN

The barrier island towns of Treasure Island, Madeira Beach and St. Pete Beach have each hired new City Managers in the past year and a half. How is it working out?

In the past 17 months since November 2017, the barrier island towns of Treasure Island, Madeira Beach and St. Pete Beach have each hired new City Managers. It is a tedious process of hiring consultants, reviewing resumes, making short lists, engaging the community, interviewing top candidates and negotiating with top contenders.

Brumback came with a strong track record for economic development and revitalization, both traits that appealed to City Commissioners. Brumback earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Virginia Military Institute and a master’s degree in international relations from Boston University

Each one brings a solid professional background, a unique mix of management skills, and an optimistic outlook for the future for their respective communities.

Brumback’s initial contract went into effect Dec. 18, 2017, and continues through Dec. 18, 2020. He will earn $135,000 per year and will receive a $5,000 increase after six months, upon a successful review. Brumback will be responsible for his own automobile and insurance expenses but will receive an annual automobile allowance of $4,800. In addition, the city will pay 8% of his base salary annually ($10,800) toward a 401a plan and he will contribute another 5% ($6,750). The city will also pay 7% of his annual salary ($9,450) to a Section 457 Retirement Plan.

Garry Brumback joined Treasure Island in late 2017, Jonathan Evans took over in Madeira Beach in February 2018, and Alex Rey comes to St. Pete Beach April 1.

Brumback at Treasure Island

The Treasure Island City Commissioners selected Garry Brumback as the new city manager with a Nov. 3, 2017, announcement. He replaced Reid Silverboard, who retired after 10 years in that post in May.

PHOTO COURTESY OF VISIT ST PETE/CLEARWATER

Brumback, then 60, was town manager of Southington, CT, for seven years, and began his new position before year-end. Southington was the third community Brumback had worked for as a manager, a career he entered after retiring as a U.S. Army lieutenant colonel. Prior to Southington, he was City Manager for three years in Baytown, TX, and Assistant City Manager in Clearwater where he worked for eight years.

Since taking on the post, Brumback has shown a hands-on approach to all city situations. As an example, he stated that he was very proud about the way the city’s employees pooled together to clean up the mess left behind by Hurricane IRMA.

“Employees worked their fingers to the bone using every bit of available resources,” he told Paradise News. “They helped one another with manpower and equipment to return life to normal after such a large event. And we were forced to do all the cleanup on our own due to the extraordinary circumstances of 2017. We don’t have plans to change our disaster abatement program.”

Rest assured that I am eager and enthusiastic about coming to work with a great community.” As incoming City Manager, soon after starting in late February, he issued a 100-day plan which outlined his commitment to communication, organization, and hard work. This plan was made available to the public at madeirabeachfl.gov/office -of-the-city-manager/.

Evans told Paradise News, “The executive management team and all the employees have been a core part of every accomplishment made thus far; their valuable contributions to this organization are interwoven into the fiber of our progress as a City and a municipal organization. I am humbled by the opportunity to serve in this capacity, and I appreciate both the challenges we have endured and the successes we have achieved.”

The City Commission of Madeira Beach announced that Jonathan Evans, recently City Manager of Riviera Beach, had accepted the post of City Manager on Jan. 31, 2018. His starting salary was $145,000 a year, as he requested.

“We are delighted to bring Mr. Evans to our City,” said Mayor Maggi Black. “We believe his experience will be a tremendous benefit to our community and we cannot wait to start working with him. I’m excited to start moving forward under his leadership.”

Mr. Evans possesses a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration – both from the University of Central Florida – and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration with a Human Resources concentration from Saint Leo University.

Prior to Riviera Beach, Evans was Assistant County Administrator for Sarasota County, and has experience in Pinellas County as the Assistant City Manager and Public Information Officer for the City of Largo.

In accepting the position, Evans said, in part, “The premise of this email is to express my enthusiasm and excitement concerning the opportunity in Madeira Beach. I want you to know that I am committed to working with each and every one of you to do what is absolutely necessary to move this organization forward. I understand that there are some challenges that lie ahead, but through genuine, open and honest relationships, we will be able to accomplish any task we set forth to accomplish.

“Your support, guidance and vision for our community will be critical as we take the necessary steps to promote tourism, smart growth and preservation and protection of our most precious natural amenities. We are proud of the progress we have made to promote good governance and maintaining transparency at the forefront with everything we do.”

“I’m excited to meet our community stakeholders, staff and entrepreneurs, to understand their ideologies and perspectives on this great city. Today marks an important milestone in cementing our relationship. Rest assured that our team will be committed and focused on providing exceptional customer service, doing so with the utmost professionalism and integrity.

Recognizing his excellent performance, the City Commission gave him a “superior” rating on his first annual evaluation, and voted unanimously to give Evans a 4% raise on his job anniversary this past February to $150,800. Speaking for the Commission, Vice Mayor Deby Weinstein said Evans had inherited “some tough problems and had worked and shown intelligence and potential with various groups, exceeding anything I have seen here in the past 40 years.”

Rey Joining St. Pete Beach

In a special Feb. 6 meeting, the SPB City Commission hired Alejandro “Alex” Rey as new City Manager, succeeding Wayne Saunders who retired after four years in the post. Rey’s initial two-year contract includes a $175,000 annual salary, $5,000 in moving expenses, a $500 monthly car allowance, and a cell phone. Benefits include family health insurance and a retirement contribution equal to 15% of his salary.

In accepting the position, Rey said, “I am grateful to the Mayor and City Commission for placing their trust me in me. St. Pete Beach is a vibrant and welcoming community, and my wife Kathie and I look forward to meeting our future neighbors and enjoying the incredible sunsets. I am looking forward to joining the group of high-performing and dedicated employees; led by a committed Mayor and Commission who work closely together for the benefit of the community.

“As the longtime manager of the Town of Miami Lakes, which is also a picturesque, close-knit community near a large metropolitan area, it is a wonderful opportunity to lead a municipality that has met the challenges of maintaining its own identity.

Rey Joining St. Pete Beach

“I am committed to serving the residents in an open way and I believe in accountability at all levels. My office door is always open, and I look forward to getting to know the residents who have shaped this community.”

Rey joins SPB from the Miami Lakes where he was Town Manager from Oct. 2002-Aug. 2008 and from Sept. 2010 to current. In that inter period he was Building Director for the City of Miami Beach from Sept, 2008 to Aug. 2010; Assistant Director - Office of Management and Budget (OMB) from 1997 to 2002 for Miami-Dade County, with the OMB responsible for preparing the annual $5 billion operating and capital budgets as well as providing managerial and technical support to the County Manager.

He was with Miami-Dade Transit Agency from 1983 to 1997, first as Management Productivity Analyst III (Project Leader), then Manager, Management Services, responsible for performing productivity studies and operational audits; evaluating the agency’s performance; evaluating special projects and developing a comprehensive reporting system, and the last five years as Assistant Director for Administration, responsible for policy development, supervision and direction of issues relating to budgeting, grants management, financial planning, audits, revenue collection, information services, procurement and contracts, materials distribution, warranty, joint development, leasing activities, advertising contracts, labor relations, training, and employee relations. It was the 15th largest transit agency in the U.S. with an annual operating budget of over $200 million per year and 2,600 employees.

In his job application to the City, Rey noted, “During my career, I have worked with large, medium and small governmental entities with various levels of complexity. My most recent experience is with the town of Miami Lakes, which has 33,000 residents. I am known for being a dynamic, diligent leader, eager to get results and improve an organization. Even though I have been in government for 35 years, I do not let bureaucracy get in the way of results.”

“I have extensive labor relations and contract negotiation experience dating back to my service with the Miami-Dade Transit Agency where I dealt with the Transportation Workers Union and General Services Administration Union. While I was at the City of Miami Beach, I was assigned to be a lead negotiator for contract renewals with the Police Benevolent Assn. and International Assn. of Firefighters.

“I have also been involved in negotiating Public Private Partnerships – specifically the joint development agreement negotiated for Dadeland North and Dadeland South on behalf of the Transit Agency, with the developers for a hotel, parking garage, and a vertical mall.

“My financial and budgetary experiences are some of my strongest traits. I have worked for many years in budget related positions, including Assistant Director in the County Budget Office, serving on the County Managers Finance Committee to review and approve all financial transactions, and presenting 10 budgets to the town of Miami Lakes Council. During the contract negotiations in Miami Beach, pension cost was a key item and I quickly gained an understanding of the pension financial structure. I have also been directly involved in securing grants in the early part of my career and managing the grant process in the most recent years.

“I believe that the Commission here is responsible for setting the goals and objectives of the City. Once objectives have been set by the Commission, the Manager needs to lead your staff to the successful achievement of those goals. I believe that it is my responsibility to develop staff and make the most of their expertise, and while providing direction and guidance, let them run with their projects and ideas. I will make each staff member perform to the best of their abilities, feel included, and create a work environment where they feel valued and respected.”

Looking ahead, Rey told Paradise News, “Over my first year, I will concentrate on ensuring that all of the infrastructure improvements will continue on schedule and try to find new funding alternatives. Once we have the infrastructure in place we need to ensure that we get high-quality redevelopment in the commercial areas of St. Pete Beach.” PN

LIFE IN paraDIse

ENCOURAGING WORDS “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty & well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, “Wow! What a Ride!”

~ HUNTER S. THOMPSON

By Dennis Merritt Jones

The Ride of Your Life Doesn’t Start Somewhere Down the Road

Are you putting your life on hold and waiting for the “right time” to enjoy it?

One of my most vivid memories as a kid growing up in the 1950s pertains to the sofa in the family room of our home. The reason I remember this particular sofa so well is that my mom covered it with a custom-fitted, clear piece of vinyl plastic, just like so many people did in that era. In the summertime I would perspire profusely and whenever I sat on the sofa in shorts and a shirt my skin would stick to the plastic as if it was glued there—it was torture each time I would move or get up from the sofa. My mom’s logic was that this was an expensive sofa so she was preserving it for greater longevity and enjoyment somewhere down the road and for years to come. Longevity maybe—enjoyment, umm, not so much. I don’t know where that sofa eventually ended up but I am quite sure some of my hide is still firmly adhered to it.

That sofa experience serves as a perfect metaphor for how many of us live our lives. Perhaps it’s just human nature to put off fully enjoying the moment and whatever it entails until we arrive at that etheric place called “somewhere down the road” where and when the time will be more appropriate to enjoy the experience. I am not talking about spending money we don’t have or doing perilous and unintelligent things with our possessions and/or our bodies. I am talking about living in the richness that each day offers in a manner that

MARCH 2019 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

allows us to experience the blessing of being alive today rather than postponing it until further notice somewhere down the road. The reality check for me is this: the older I grow, the more I know this moment is as good as it gets because it’s the only moment I have. So why not live in it as deeply and richly as I can? While this topic is not just about the wisdom with which we use our financial resources, I’ve known more than one person who postponed enjoying the fruits of his labor, squirreling away every penny he earned, saving it for a rainy day. This is not an indictment of saving wisely— it’s an indictment of saving fearfully in a manner that robs us of what joy the moment might bring if we only allow ourselves to be open to it. Recently, I saw a 40-foot motorhome with a fancy boat in tow being driven down the freeway. A bumper sticker on it said, “We’re spending our kids’ inheritance NOW and enjoying every dime of it!” As I drove by I noticed that the driver was not an elderly man who had “paid his dues” (which I expected to see), but a much younger man than me. I thought to myself, why not—you have earned it; if you can afford it, you should enjoy it while you have the opportunity to. At first this mindset can appear self-serving and perhaps a bit stingy, but taken in proper context, it is not that at all; it’s about being wise enough to know what you are worthy of and embracing it while you can. For some it may be about no longer postponing the motorhome experience or taking the trip of a lifetime until

“someday” arrives. For others it may be about no longer postponing joining that hiking club, planting that garden, or enrolling in that long desired art, dance, fitness, or computer class until such time when it is more convenient or practical. Seldom does that time ever show up.

From a spiritual perspective, we know that life is eternal — and that is a profoundly important thing to remember. However, equally important we know we exist on a timeline — our life has an expiration date. It’s a gift meant to be fully used before we leave the planet rather than squandered by living small. In short, don’t return to your Maker less than fully “used up.” That’s like paying for a full day pass at Disneyland and then leaving the park before you get to all the rides. You have already paid the admission price for the ride called life, so be sure to get your money’s worth before you leave.

What might you be postponing until that etheric destination called “somewhere down the road”? Perhaps now is the time to stop thinking and start doing. Of course, that will always be the case because now is all there is and now is all you have. How are you spending your “now”? At the end of your journey on this planet, whenever that day comes, may you be able to say, “Wow! What a ride!” This story is an excerpt from Dennis Merritt Jones’ book Encouraging Words - Articles & Essays That Prove Who You Are Matters. Visit www.DennisMerrittJones.com for more info.

Time to Explore Downtown St. Petersburg!

March is the perfect time for alfresco dining and exploring downtown. We love all the restaurants on Beach Drive with patios, especially The Annex, 400 Beach, Tryst, Annata’s, Bella Brava and Cassis. Of course, sitting on the verandah with a glass of bubbly at The Vinoy is just dreamy, especially when you catch a glimpse of the yachting life!

In keeping with the charcuterie craze, Bacchus gourmet market is a welcome addition. With a tantalizing selection of European wine, beer, sodas, fresh bread, charcuterie, soups, salads, sandwiches and cheese boards, it’s “where France meets your palate” and you can “Meat and Un-Wined”. Best of all is the happy hour 4 - 7 pm daily. Just a kiss away is Room 901, a wine/beer/whiskey bar open only in the evening with superior charcuterie and conversation.

The German Knoodle brings a cuisine only seen previously at Hofbrau and we love it. The German Knoodle uses in-season, locally-grown ingredients, including organic, sustainable meat, game, fish, poultry, vegetables and grains and an herb garden is in the works. For breakfast, try the mushroom and leek tart and for lunch or dinner explore the German Gourmet (German Schnitzels, Breaded Pork Meat or Chicken served with mashed potato and German House salad) or Weisswurste (White sausage, grilled or poached, house French fries or mashed potato, fresh baked pretzel, mustard).

The Red Mesa folks on 3rd Ave. debuted DeSanto Rooftop Bar & Grill, featuring tapas, small plates and peerless cocktails that make this the ultimate party.

Of note is the James Beard Award nominees including The Library (formerly The Peabody), truly an inspired dining concept with a brunch to live for. Congrats and fingers crossed! We’re headed there Sunday for the Oak View Farm Oatmeal with pecan crumbles, avocado toast, pork belly

Benedict, sweet potato pancakes and the hickory salmon with herb crème fraiche. Have you stopped in at Beans & Barlour? It’s the ‘Burg’s first coffee and dessert lounge and features alcohol infused ice cream, coffee and desserts. The coffee is made from 100% organic beans, the flavored syrups are housemade, they serve impeccable lattes (lavender, rose, orange clove vanilla) and Campfire Story is a signature marvel, made with hickory smoke, milk chocolate, vanilla and torched marshmallow. Nibble beer cheese or boozy chocolate fondue, enjoy a charcuterie or cheese board, test out a pretzel flight and kvell when you taste the Black Truffle Burrata.

No Vacancy took over the King Street space and is a totally unique hoot! Check out “Sinners Paradise Where We Don’t Give A Flock” on the sign, astroturf and pink flamingos on the patio, kooky trailer park cocktails and funkalicious dishes like Alligator Alley Bites, lobster and cheddar Skinny Dip, Poolside Sliders mojo pork with pineapple mango slaw and lobster melts. As always, stop in at The Mall at Sundial, Locale and FarmTable Cucina, especially for St. Patrick’s Day shenanigans on your way to Courigans and the DTSP Block Party. And before most shows at Duke Energy Center for the Arts –Mahaffey Theater, enjoy a buffet with a waterfront view at the theater’s Bayside Bistro. PN

Tyler Henry The Hollywood Medium By Nanette Wiser

Tyler Henry is the star of E! Entertainment’s hit television show, Hollywood Medium, and for the first time audiences will be treated to his new live show entitled “Life Lessons I’ve Learned From The Departed” at Duke Energy Center for the Arts – Mahaffey Theater Wednesday May 29th @7:30 pm. This exclusive show will feature Tyler discussing his unique gift and how it affects his everyday life, and also includes a multi-media video presentation and lecture PLUS live readings and audience Q&A. Tyler Henry has quickly become perhaps the most soughtafter clairvoyant medium both in the United States and around the world. Through his show, Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry, broadcast worldwide on E!, Tyler demonstrates how he uses his unique gift of communicating with the other side to bring comfort, closure, and hope to his clients. Tyler’s goal has always been to aid in the grief process and provide validation and closure through his one-on-one private readings, his TV show, his book, and now his live shows.

Tyler began receiving intuitive mental images when he was only 10 years old with the foretelling of his grandmother’s death. As he continued cultivating his gift, sometimes even by “reading” his classmates, word began to spread around his small California hometown. As a teenager in Hanford, Tyler began thinking of a way to incorporate his gift into a career. He graduated high school early and began taking college classes to become a hospice nurse as he believed his calling was to help people comfortably transition to the other side. At the same time, he continued to cultivate his ability by doing private readings at a local bookstore.

Word of his talents quickly spread to Los Angeles where well-known celebrities began to request private readings. Tyler found they shared the same feelings of loss and grief as all of his other clients – a kind of unspoken commonality between all people. As his clientele began to expand, an opportunity presented itself to bring his work to a much larger audience. Although shy and reserved, Tyler accepted, feeling

it was his responsibility to share his ability with as many people as he could possibly reach. He has never regretted that decision.

In three seasons of Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry, Tyler has read Jim Parsons, Megan Fox, RuPaul, David Arquette and Chrissy Metz, among others, providing specific, detail-oriented and personal messages from the other side and turning even some of the biggest skeptics, including Moby, Tom Arnold and Dr. Drew, into believers. Known for his rational, comforting, and tactful presentation of the information he receives, Tyler warmly proves to his clients and the audience that consciousness transcends physical death for everyone. You can catch Season 4 of Hollywood Medium on E! Thursdays at 8 pm.

As his popularity began to rise, Tyler decided to share more of his story with his growing audience through his book, Between Two Worlds, which takes us on his journey of discovering his ability, accepting and embracing it, and then managing this often-overwhelming gift in Hollywood. Tyler shares specific stories of readings and how they affected his life, as well as the overwhelming feelings and responsibilities he feels delivering such emotional and impactful messages. Most recently, Tyler has decided a live show would be the most effective way to reach even more of his ever-expanding audience in need of healing. During Life Lessons I’ve Learned from the Departed, Tyler shares how communicating with those on the other side has actually taught him to live a better, happier, and more fulfilled life. The show includes incredible stories of Tyler’s journey from Hanford to Hollywood, detailed accounts of readings that helped Tyler grow into the young man he is today, and of course, live readings. The tour is currently visiting as many locations as Tyler can fit into his busy schedule

Great American Cleanup Saturday, March 16, 9 – noon Tampa Bay Watch is recruiting volunteers to participate in the Great American Cleanup, in partnership with Keep Pinellas Beautiful. This cleanup is sponsored by SeaWorld Busch Gardens Conservation Fund and supported by city of St. Petersburg.

The Great American Cleanup is the nation’s largest community improvement program, which takes place annually in an estimated 20,000 communities nationwide. This is a land-based cleanup, so we are looking for volunteers to walk the sites to pick up trash to prevent marine debris. Helping hands are needed at Bartlett Park, 647 22nd Ave S., St. Petersburg 33705 and Grandview Park, 3734 E 6th St, St. Petersburg 33701. We could also use a maximum of 8 kayakers at Grandview Park.

The Tricolored Heron can be seen in the quiet shallow waters of Tampa Bay. Strikingly slender, with long bill, neck, and legs, it is often seen wading belly-deep in the bay. Although it is solitary in its feeding, it is sociable in nesting, often in very large colonies with various other herons and egrets. This bird is formerly known as the Louisiana Heron. Spend a “Day on the Bay”

March 12, 13, or 14, 9am – noon This spring break, come join the education department on an eco-tour throughout the Tampa Bay estuary. After a quick estuary introduction and kayak briefing, trained staff will take you on the water in tandem kayaks to see the estuary from a whole new perspective! Kayak the mangrove tunnel and get the chance to see the unique plants and animals that call Tampa Bay their home. Eco-tours are offered March 12, 13, and 14 from 9am – noon. Tour price is $35 per participant. please visit our website at http://tampabaywatch.org/ dayonthebay.html. Hope to see you soon!

Dwarf Seahorses live in the shallow seagrass beds of Tampa Bay. They use their tails to anchor themselves to the seagrass as seen in the above picture. Adults only grow to about an inch tall. They have complex social behaviors, usually mating for life. Male seahorses carry the babies and give live birth. Unfortunately, seagrass habitat has been damaged from pollution, boats and changing ocean conditions causing the populations of these little seahorses to decline. Source: biologicaldiversity.org

FISHING

By Captain Mark & Dylan Hubbard HubbardsMarina.com at John’s Pass (727) 393-1947

“If you’re too busy to go fishing, you’re just too darn busy!” – Capt Wilson Hubbard

INSHORE- Warmer weather is encouraging the Snook to swim back into the passes. The white bait showed up to get chased by Mackerel and the Pompano as Sheepshead slows a bit. Some Mackerel were caught at the Skyway Bridge in mid-February, they should be in the pass soon if the early warming trend continues. Pompano action has picked up, using live shrimp. Sheepshead are still biting well for now around the pass. Use fiddler crabs for bait. NEAR SHORE - Sheepshead and Hogfish are biting well and the grey snapper bite is picking up and filling the gaps. All areas improved on the backside of that recent full moon. Typically, the full moon can make the daytime fishing a bit slow near shore during the peak days of the moonlight allowing the fish to feed 24 hours a day instead of limiting their feeding to the daytime. We are looking forward to the return of Mackerel and Kingfish to the near shore waters. OFFSHORE – We had a great 44-hour full moon trip mid-February. Red Grouper Mangrove, Yellowtail and Vermillion Snapper, Porgies and a few Cobia and even a Kingfish were all brought back to the dock! The tuna were absent but we saw a great push of cobia twice during the trip, which made up for the lack of tuna. The weather was perfect during this trip with warm temps and nearly flat, calm conditions. The Vermillion Snapper up huge (in the 2 - 3lb range) with some 5 - 7lb Mangrove Snapper coming up too. The big mangrove snapper love to eat the live pinfish, but anglers have to wait for the hard pull when the Mangrove Snapper swallows the pinfish. Plus, after March 1st all these

longer trips will keep some big triggerfish! Book your trip today at our website – https://HubbardsMarina.com or call us at (727)393-1947 Want to watch Capt. Dylan Hubbard’s daily video reports? Check out the Hubbard’s Marina YouTube channel and SUBSCRIBE! Dolphin Corner The dolphin are in very large pods right now hunting plentiful sheepshead, black drum and mullet so it’s a great time to catch a relaxing cruise and enjoy the playful groups of dolphins and super clear back bay waters around Johns Pass at Hubbard’s Marina. Here’s all the information on our dolphin watching nature cruise and eco tour – Visit https://hubbardsmarina.com/ dolphin-watching-cruises/ Tampa Bay Ferry News You have to get out to Egmont Key Island sometime soon! It’s a great time to explore the island and see the plentiful gopher tortoises sunning themselves each morning. The shelling is great this time of year as well thanks to the cooler conditions keeping island traffic low and the occasional cold front bringing new shells onto our local islands! The Tampa Bay Ferry offers 11am ferry rides to the island Wednesday through Sunday this time of year. You get two hours on the island after around a 20-30 minute ride out and back to the island. Plus, we often see dolphins, seabirds and sometimes even sea turtles on the ride out and back. - https://hubbardsmarina.com/egmo nt-key-ferry-cruise The Shell Key ferry trip will resume this month with multiple daily rides out to Shell Key.

March 2019 Astrology Forecast

Mercury stations Retrograde on the 5th and slows things down for the next few weeks. This will be your time to RE anything. Reconnect, review or go on a retreat to rest and relax! Nothing new for now; finish up everything and get ready for the surge of energy later this month that will propel your plans forward! Big news the next day! Uranus, planet of the unexpected and unpredictable will enter slow, steady Taurus and stay there for the next few years; pushing natives of this sign out of their comfort zone! Scorpio, Leo and Aquarius also get in on the excitement! On a global level watch for earth changes and currency modifications. The New Moon in Pisces, also on the 6th, begins this months lunar cycle. Creative, compassionate energy flows forth and your psychic awareness and intuition is heightened! We wear rose colored glasses now but grounding planets keep us on track! The Sun enters Aries on the afternoon of the 20th as the Vernal Equinox brings the first day of spring! Just a few hours later we have a Full Crow Moon in Libra occurring on the same day! This is an action packed combo, full of new beginnings and motivation to kick off the season! Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorns are all highlighted! Each of your birth charts are also activated; a professional astrologer can tell you what to expect and when! The last week of March is full of cosmic activity with love planet Venus visiting sensitive Pisces on the 26th for three weeks. Romance and creativity are strong influences and we are self-sacrificing, gentle

and compassionate. Finally, Mercury stations direct the 28th in psychic Pisces giving us insight into our new plans and dreams until mid April! Then, when action planet Mars enters spontaneous Gemini on the 31st, we can be pulled in so many directions it may be difficult to choose where to focus! Don’t worry, just enjoy the variety and options for the next month or so! PISCES: Your own new year begins now and the lunar cycle starts it off with future plans on the horizon! Daily activity is fast paced. Full moon focus is on finances and resources. You have what you need to move on.

ARIES: Behind the scenes you dream of new possibilities then work to make them happen. Social time is enjoyable. Spotlight is on your partner; share ideas, activities. Then get away for some quiet time and reconnect. TAURUS: You have energy to spare this month and your social calendar is full! Reconnect to friends; review future plans! Health issues can surface; education can aid new wellness plans. Position, status, career enhanced.

GEMINI: Busy behind the scenes; working with resources. New position or career options received; be gracious. Romance, fun and children are center stage! Travel, learn and be creative but don’t break the budget!

CANCER: Friends and future are unpredictable now; break away from old patterns. New energy prompts travel, education; review beliefs. Resources are enhanced. Home and family become focus. Partners challenging now.
