Welcome to the second of two bimonthly summer issues of our otherwise monthly magazine. Designed to be published on “Island Time,” Paradise NEWS is generally timely online at paradisenewsfl.com, where one can purchase a print subscription or sign up for a FREE, informative, weekly Thursday e-newsletter with a reminder of the top five things to do each weekend.

There are a lot of Golden 50-year celebrations this summer. Last issue it was 50 years of Renfrows at the Alden Resort, this month it’s 50 years since the first moon landing and on August 15, it’s 50 years since Woodstock. We’ll be celebrating that memory and our 48th Wedding Anniversary on that same day at the Mushroom Festival in Telluride, Colorado. This fall also marks the Silver Anniversary of this publication, this being the 248th edition. Our August – September issue cover celebrates this year’s Geckofest theme, Geckos of the Round Table. The month-long celebration is typical Gulfport residents’ answer to the “dawg days” of summer. Culminating with an all day celebration on the last Saturday of August, this year on August 31st, it is a day for costumes, food, outlandish parades and great times. The cover story is only a bit about Geckofest and much more about the continuing evolution of the Gulfport business community, written by Caron Schwartz. Also in the issue is an update of our Hurricane Preparation guide by Steve Traiman, so you can be prepared for the worst. Readers might see a marked change in design this month and in months to come as Janet Nummi has been promoted to art and production manager. We welcome a few new advertisers this issue as well as most of our long time regulars. When you visit please tell them you saw their ad or read about them in Paradise NEWS. Thanks for reading and keeping us on our toes.

By Peter Roos which the city has no control. In order for the project to be approved for the federal grant funds to be authorized, the project has to be selected for funding. Local dissension is likely to hurt that effort.

Bus Rapid Transit Update “In spite of what you may have read elsewhere, no agreement has been reached with PSTA regarding the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project they and St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman are encouraging us to embrace,” St. Pete Beach Mayor Al Johnson recently reported. “The Beach Trolley route, which is separate from the BRT project, is being shortened so that the Trolley will no longer go to Pass-a-Grille after our current PSTA agreement ends in October.” The big trolleys have been a problem, blocking traffic on our narrow streets.” “We plan to service Pass-aGrille with small electric vehicles instead, and are considering expanding that service north to 75th Ave. PSTA’s trolley is an adequate solution north of 75th since it continues north to Clearwater anyway.” “Mayor Kriseman does not seem satisfied with our proposal to have BRT terminate at 75th Ave., or possibly at the county park across from Dolphin Village Shopping Center. City commissioners feel either is viable, as long as 40’ or shorter buses are utilized, and St. Pete Beach will not be expected to contribute to the cost of the BRT project.” Commissioners are in a bit of a bind, as theoretically PSTA does not need SPB authorization to proceed, as the roads involved are state thoroughfares over

Alaska – Still The Last Frontier? By Peter Roos | Photos by Renee Roos

Five Fingers for five salmons: Thumb – Chum; Index – Sockeye; Middle – King; Ring – Silver; and Pinkie – Pink Some longtime readers may remember our visit to Alaska a decade ago. That time we flew to Barrow, then to Fairbanks, visited Denali by train and continued to Anchorage. Then we drove all over the state from Homer to Valdez and back on the Maritime Highway.

“We’d never been to Juneau, Skagway or Ketchikan,” Renee pointed out late in June as she perused an offer for a last-minute inside passage cruise, round trip from Seattle. It would give us a chance to see those amazing glaciers firsthand before they all melt away. Early July is the only time our schedule permits such impulsive thoughts, and since this summer marked a landmark birthday for Renee and the 25th anniversary of Paradise NEWS, we decided we deserved it. Seemed like summer had already been here for several months by the middle of June. Getting to Seattle proved challenging with the Boeing Max fleet grounded, but with flexible flight schedules, we were able to save enough airfare to budget a few days in our cruise’s home port. We learned to use the light rail and the monorail at 1/2 price for seniors and visited the amazing Chihuly Museum & Gardens in the shadow of the Space Needle. We also visited Paul Allen’s popular and crowded MoPop, the Museum of Pop Culture, as well as the spacious Pacific Science Center and rested while we took in an incredible Imax movie about the brown, black and polar bears that visit and inhabit the Olympic Peninsula. We enjoyed a balcony cabin aboard the Bliss, Norwegian Cruise Lines, sister ship to the Joy, floating hotels with 4,300 guests and 1,800 crew aboard. While these ships appeared to be the newest and the biggest, there were at least four supersized cruise ships in each port we visited, Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Victoria, British Columbia.

12

Our ship had amazing amenities, including a go cart track and laser tag for children, a casino and theatre for the adults. The Alaskans were for the most part relishing the “hot” weather. While we were there, Anchorage set a new record of 90F degrees, a full 5 degrees over the prior record. In Juneau, Alaska’s capital, we took a bus tour to a salmon hatchery. AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2019 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

There we learned there are five types of Alaskan Salmon. Coincidentally, there are five fingers, so a handy memory tool evolved: Thumb – Chum; Index – Sockeye; Middle – King; Ring – Silver; and Pinkie – Pink. Fourteen hatcheries like this one each release millions of young salmon, increasing and ensuring the bountiful harvest for generations to come. From there the bus took us to the local glacier visitor’s center. From there we hiked to Gold Nugget Falls for a closer view of the Mendenhall Glacier. The next day we docked early in the morning in Skagway, base camp for gold prospectors headed for the Yukon Territories circa 1876-1897. They were having an incredible heat wave by Alaskan standards with highs in the 80s and 90s. A train was built to take prospectors to the gold fields and bring the gold back, but, by the time it was finished, the gold rush was over. The train has become a success more recently, however, taking cruise ship passengers over the

route the prospectors took. It was sold out the day we were there, so we were lucky to snap the last Jeep, complete with an iPad powered tour of Skagway and the road to Emerald Lake, with stories about the gold rush days and modern times. The Jeep rental came with a lunch, which we enjoyed at a campground picnic table overlooking a lake, with the mountains behind, screened by a haze of smoke from fires burning near Fairbanks. We got a great shot of the train heading back to Skagway, and a photo of the sand dunes at the Carcross Desert. The next day, floating in Glacier Bay, we felt about as far away from Florida as one can get in a week. The final day in Alaska we had just five hours in Ketchikan, famous for fishing. We’d booked Baranof, the largest local fishing charter, and since we were a couple weeks early for salmon, we fished for halibut and cod with herring pieces almost 300 feet down. We caught a bunch of cod, a couple of small sharks and one halibut. It was a couple of fun hours on the water and we have fish in our freezer to show for it. We made a quick stop in Victoria BC, a compulsory foreign port that legitimizes the casino gambling aboard, and a visit to Bouchart Gardens for the fireworks display we’d missed ten days before. Overall the trip was one of the most outstanding in recent memory. I would definitely be willing to do it again.

Bill Moore, in the middle in a burnt orange shirt, originally from Fall River MA, is a familiar face on Corey Ave., especially at the Blue Parrot and Chill. If he appears surprised and pleased, it is because his four children, their spouses, nine grandchildren and the mother of his children flew in from Connecticut, New Jersey, Washington, DC and Maine to surprise Bill for his 80th birthday celebration at Chill on Corey Ave. in St. Pete Beach. I suspect that Bill’s wife, Leslee Moore, also in the photo, had something to do with pulling the event together.

Could Medical Massage

Improve Your Life?

H

er father had sustained an injury that ended his football career at the University of Nebraska years before, but when Marsha Jo was very young, her dad re-injured himself while playing with her and the family dog, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Doctors gave little hope of recovery, warning that surgery could make things worse. Her dad later met a gentleman that gave him treatments of massage, chiropractic and traction. Within 6 months he was walking again, and is still active to this day. Marsha’s mom apprenticed under that gentleman and became a licensed massage therapist. She later served as president of the South Dakota chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) for several years. Massage is in Marsha Jo’s blood! Born in Nebraska and raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Marsha attended the University of Miami and stayed in Florida. She specializes in medical massage. One of her specialties, lymphatic drainage, is a talent she learned when she worked with Robin Miller, when Robin owned a spa in downtown St. Pete before becoming CEO of the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce for the past 10 years. “We started offering this service especially for cancer patients after their treatments, but found many other applications,” Robin advised.

Renee Roos can attest to its effectiveness. She was suffering from an attack of osteoarthritis in her neck that had her on pain meds for almost a week. In just 90 minutes, over Memorial Day weekend, Marsha Jo had Renee feeling like a completely different person. With that and some follow-up bodywork over the following week, Renee happily put her pain pills away. Marsha Jo Johnson Houck, MA 40105, is a proud single mom of Kylie, 13 and Logan, 11. Help For Chronic Pain and Balance Issues Have you ever had a health problem that just would not go away? Do you suffer from migraine headaches, neck pain, or vertigo and dizziness? Are you frustrated with the things that make your daily routine harder to manage due to chronic pain or balance issues?

I’ve been there – waiting in doctor’s office after doctor’s office. I’ve waited for neurology consults for periods of 6-8 weeks while battling seizures and passing out. I’ve listened to treatment plans, taken prescription medications that claimed to be the cure all for my ailments. And after following the doctor’s orders, at 22 years of age, I was still experiencing complications from concussions that I sustained from competitive cheerleading. My daily routine was battling headaches, nausea and even occasional seizures and black outs. I started to see a pattern that the medications were not a long-term fix for my case. I began to look at alternative health plans and researching my health concerns. The universe led me to Dr. Tony Murray at Murray Chiropractic Neurology (MCN) in downtown St. Petersburg, FL. Dr. Murray is a Board-Certified Chiropractic Neurologist who specializes in chiropractic and functional neurology. From the moment I entered the practice, I could feel the positive energy of the MCN team. How often do you walk into a health care provider’s office and feel kindness, compassion and positivity from the staff and medical practitioners?

by Mackenzie Allen

Dr. Murray and Dr. Jesso work as a team to provide the newest brain-based therapies coupled with chiropractic care. The therapies may consist of eye exercises, vestibular (balance) rehabilitation, brain exercises/training, neural sensory integrator, RightEye testing, full body vibration and so on. You receive personal service in this practice. The doctors work on one patient at a time, focusing on the individual patient needs and are very encouraging through each appointment. The MCN practice has approaches that often work in ways doctors practicing traditional western medicine do not understand. These approaches and treatment plans can relieve pain you thought might be permanent. All of these things are what make Murray Chiropractic so special and unique. Murray Chiropractic Neurology is located at 209 5th Street North, Saint Petersburg. To learn more about Dr. Murray and his team of caring professionals, visit their website (murraychiropracticneurology.com) or contact the office to schedule a consult at 727-310-9820. If you go for a consult, be sure to let them know you read about them in Paradise NEWS!

The MCN team is helping patients, who like me, suffer from chronic pain conditions, migraines, balance disorders to traumatic brain injuries, and athletic injuries. Dr. Murray has helped many patients walk without pain again, healed migraines that nothing seemed to fix before, and re-trained my brain so that I would no longer suffer my post-concussion symptoms. During my treatment at MCN, I saw both Dr. Murray and his associate, Dr. Kim Jesso. Dr. Jesso is also a Chiropractor who will be eligible to sit her Neurology Board examination in October 2019. Both doctors take their time to fully understand your symptoms, pain level, and medical history.

Potter’s Precision Imports adds Land Rover & Jag Repair We have previously written about our favorite new German car repair shop, Potter’s Precision Imports, on the east side of Joe’s Creek Industrial Park off 38th Ave. N. via 31st St. in the center of St. Petersburg. You know the place so clean you can eat off the floor, with as many as 90 Five Star Google reviews. For example, Suzanna posted in May, “We were very impressed with the team at Potter’s Precision Imports. They diagnosed & fixed our 2015 BMW X5 quickly and were able to bill our extended warranty company. We had them do some other BMW recommended preventative maintenance work as well and still had our car back the same day. Very clean and nice facility, we will be bringing this car back there for all future maintenance and repairs.” As he expanded from a two-lift shop to eight, Tom Potter was also pleased to have had Richard Webb part from a 19-Year-career at a local Mercedes-Benz dealer to join his award winning team. Potter’s growth has been fueled by its acquisition of top-notch technicians, all with the

same philosophy, to treat people like they mattered. We are thrilled to share the news that our fellow import owners who are driving Land Rovers and newer Jaguars (2008 – present) can now expect the same 5-star service on their favorite marques as well. Potter’s Precision has announced the addition of Keith Reiter to the technical team as the master tech for Land Rover and the technician for the newer, more dependable Jaguars as well. Until the end of July he was the shop foreman at Dimmitt Land Rover in Clearwater. Let’s clear up any confusion. THERE’S only one BayCare hospital in St. Pete, and it’s called St. Anthony’s. As the only BayCare hospital in St. Petersburg, we’re dedicated to improving the health of our community. In 1997, as one of BayCare’s founding hospitals, St. Anthony’s Hospital helped us establish our high standards of care. St. Anthony’s mission, improving the health of all we serve, along with our long history of compassionate care and state-of the-art medical services, makes us one of BayCare’s flagship hospitals. And, even though we’re the only BayCare hospital in St. Petersburg, St. Anthony’s has the support of the entire BayCare network. In fact, in the last two years alone, that support has translated into $50 million in improvements, further strengthening St. Anthony’s health care commitment to our community. Humanity At Work . TM

PROPERTY LAW

Travels through Property Law by Tom Brodersen, Esq.

Seller Beware! Recently there was an article on the front page of the paper about a buyer who got out of a contract to buy a multi-million dollar home by suing the seller, just days before closing. Actually, the buyer never had the ability to close, but managed to finesse the agents into showing the property, and the seller into accepting an offer. It turned out that buyer was in foreclosure on another property, had a judgment for over a half-million dollars in California, and had filed for bankruptcy half a dozen times. During the fiasco that ensued, the seller got an offer from a legitimate buyer who could close, but they couldn’t go forward because of the first contract. The suit ended with the seller paying $300,000 to the “broke” buyer “to get out of my life.” While this was surely a nightmare, it’s not unique. We’ve seen buyers and sellers getting into lawsuits that went on for years, one where the buyer and seller got together to go around their real estate agents “to save the commission.” By the time it was over,

the controversy had also enveloped a shipping container full of antique furniture sent from England as part of the deal. The truth is that the parties were probably posturing

There are three common threads here. One is the misplaced optimism people often feel when they think they have a deal, that “their ship has come in.” The second is the many things that can go wrong when a closing is delayed, even for a little while. And third, none of these sellers had talked to an attorney before accepting the offer.

to screw each other over from the very beginning. In another case, the guardian of a disabled child saw a big money judgment come in from a personal injury lawsuit, and decided that she (the guardian) could use much of that cash to buy a fabulous new home, ostensibly to house the child. It never occurred to her that the court supervising the guardianship would never permit such a purchase with the trust funds of the ward. That lawsuit

Venetian Isles – Boater’s Paradise in NE St. Petersburg Boaters looking to live in south Pinellas have several great options. Most of those options lie in the beach communities, or off the Pinellas Bayway on the way to Fort Desoto. If quick access to the airport is important, one of the top-rated neighborhoods on the water in northeast St. Petersburg is Venetian Isles on Tampa Bay’s west shore. George R. Davis, a major developer on the “Suncoast” in the 1950s “sparked” the development of Venetian Isles in 1959 by obtaining the deed to the submerged waters of Tampa Bay that would become Venetian Isles for $34,412.50. Venetian Isles was developed as a submerged water landfill project. Designed and built at an elevation 5-7 feet above the natural shoreline, Venetian Isles has been spared from flooding during the storms and hurricanes that have hit Tampa Bay over the past 50 years. Actual development of homes started in 1968. Sibley Homes completed development of the remaining lots in the early 1970’s. The authority & responsibility of maintaining and enforcing the deed restrictions was turned over to the Venetian Isles Homeowners Association, Inc. in 1970. A tranquil deed-restricted community with approximately 533 waterfront homes built on man-made islands connected by a series of bridges, Venetian Isles is coveted for its beautifully manicured landscaping, water views, friendly community and close proximity to downtown St. Petersburg, Tampa and both the area’s airports. This highly sought-after neighborhood is a favorite for boaters due to deep-water canals designed for both sailboat and power boat access. The Venetian Isles Homeowners’ Association hosts many social opportunities for the community, including a garden club, a bunco “card” club, an annual Oktoberfest and the Dolphin Cruising Sailing Club. If you are looking for a great place to plant some roots in style, you’d be hard-pressed to outdo the luxurious lifestyle found in Venetian Isles. Voluntary membership dues are currently $150 per year. James Brylinke is a Realtor® with the Byrne & Brylinke Team of ReMax Metro in their Treasure Island office. Be Prepared Hurricane Season Runs Through Nov. 30! Story by STEVE TRAIMAN

Although our annual hurricane season officially opened

June 1, we can’t forget that IRMA arrived August 30, 2017, and left a $50 billion plus swath of destruction up the spine of Florida, just missing our Barrier Islands. And MICHAEL came ashore October 10, 2018, at Mexico Beach on the Panhandle, leaving more than $15 billion in damage – and still counting.

26

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2019 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri observed. “Floridians know as well as anyone how unpredictable hurricanes can be and how abruptly their paths can shift. If there is one thing Hurricane IRMA taught us, it is to be prepared.” “First and foremost, you must know in what evacuation zone you reside. Evacuation zones are based on several factors, including ground elevation and vulnerability to storm surge. “During a potential disaster, emergency management and public safety officials are in constant communication with each other and other agencies, like the National Weather Service, to ensure we are as educated as possible before making decisions about what areas should evacuate and when. But if citizens don’t know that they are required to leave, they won’t. “Learn your evacuation zone by typing your address into the map at pinellascounty.org/knowyourzone or by calling the Pinellas County Interactive Hurricane Evacuation Inquiry Line, 727-453-3150, and entering the landline associated with the location in question. “If you live in a barrier island community (all are Mandatory Evacuation Zones), make sure you are registered for and know where you’ve placed your Emergency Access Permit. When a mandatory evacuation order is lifted, law enforcement officials will scan emergency access permits at designated re-entry points. Barrier island residents may register directly with their city government during its general office hours year-round, so don’t wait until an evacuation order has been issued to secure yours. (See Sidebar for complete list.) “If you registered for and still possess your Emergency Access Permit from years prior, you DO NOT need to register again. If you don’t know if you need a permit, visit pcsoweb.com/emergency-access-permit or call the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 727-582-6200. “Just as you should have an escape plan in case of a fire, it is important you plan ahead for what you should do in case of a hurricane. Again, don’t wait until the last minute. “If you plan to stay at your residence, create a hurricane survival kit that will last at least seven days with plenty of bottled water, canned or dry foods that won’t go bad, a battery-powered radio, candles, basic first-aid items, vital medications, etc. Visit pinellascounty.org for a list of suggested hurricane survival kit items.

“If you plan to evacuate, we highly recommend staying with friends or relatives or in a hotel if possible. However, if you have no alternate accommodations, Pinellas County has 34 potential emergency shelters. A few of these shelters are specifically designated for citizens with special needs but are limited to basic medical monitoring and back-up electricity for lighting. If you know that you and your family would need transport assistance to any Pinellas County shelter, register ahead of time to ensure you receive it. Register online at pinellascounty.org/specialneeds. “For a full list of shelters, visit Pinellas County Government’s website. Keep in mind that not all shelters will open for every evacuation, so check pinellascounty.org/emergency or call the Citizen Information Center at 727-464-4333 to learn which are open. (See accompanying Sidebar for list of South Pinellas, Pet-Friendly & Special Needs Shelters.) Business preparation tips: Take the necessary precautions. As a storm threatens, secure your building. Cover and move equipment and furniture to a secured area; Always protect your data with back up files; Make plans to work with limited cash and probably no water, sewer or power for at least two weeks; Contact your customers and suppliers regarding your continuity plans; Protect windows and glass doors; Clear the property or tie down any items that could become flying missiles; Fill fleet cars and equipment gas tanks; Turn off electricity, water and gas; If your business is in a non-evacuation area, think about having your business serve as a host home shelter for employees.

Employees need TLC: Communicate your business hurricane plan with your employees. Remember, too, that your associates may need some extra consideration. Probably all of your employees need time to prepare their own homes and talk with their families about their own personal emergency plans. Business interruption insurance: Business owners need to think about what they would do if their buildings were unusable after a storm. Here are a few tips to keep in mind: Understand that Business Interruption Insurance will compensate you for lost income if your company has to leave the site because of disaster-related damage; Be sure that the policy will cover your company for more than a few days. After a disaster, it may take more time to get

back up and running; Ask what the waiting period would be before the insurance coverage begins; Explore the cost of adding this coverage to your specific business type. Some businesses, like restaurants, might have to pay a higher premium based on risk. Special note for home-based businesses: All businesses, large and small, are thinking about emergency preparedness. And, home-based business owners should be doing that too. “Home-based business owners should be aware that after a disaster, they may qualify for SBA Disaster Loans and possibly unemployment benefits, if they are unable to work,” said Dr. Cynthia Johnson, director of the Florida Small Business Development Center at Pinellas County Economic Development. “A To-Go Box is another critical item every home-based business owner should pull together. One action to take right now is to back up computer information on CDs or another portable medium. Store those back-ups in the To-Go Box too. Take photos of your home office, both inside and out, to take along. “Just like all business leaders, home-based business owners should ensure they safeguard essential business documents and information in a Go Box,” said Johnson. “Ideally, that box should be backed up in an alternative location in the event the home is destroyed.” __________ Sheriff Gualtieri has some final words for all Pinellas residents and business owners: “Finally, stay connected. Leading up to a potential hurricane or other emergency, it is our top priority to keep citizens informed so that we can all get through it together and as efficiently as possible. Follow the Sheriff’s Office and Pinellas County Government on Facebook and Twitter and look for “#GetReadyPinellas” for posts including preparation tips, situation-specific details, evacuation orders, etc. Also, download the free “Ready Pinellas” app in the App Store or Google Play to receive updates as they are issued. __________ “Keeping citizens safe is EVERYONE’s responsibility. We might not know when and where the next disaster will strike, but with proper preparation and open communication, we can be ready for it.” [Editor’s Note: Special thanks to Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri and Michele DeCarion, PCSO PR Specialist, and Dr. Cynthia Johnson, Pinellas County Economic Development, for their valuable assistance and insights.] [Feature Writer Steve Traiman is President of Creative Copy by Steve Traiman in St. Pete Beach, offering freelance business writing services. FERTILIZER Fertilizers containing nitrogen and/or phosphorous may not be used through Sept. 30 Fertilizer runoff can pollute our waterways, cause harmful algae blooms and kill marine life. Water quality testing shows the ordinance is having a positive impact. Residents and landscapers are reminded that Pinellas County’s fertilizer ordinance prohibits the sale or application of fertilizers containing nitrogen and/or phosphorous between June 1 and Sept. 30. Phosphorous cannot be used at any time of the year unless a soil test confirms that it is needed. Also, fertilizer can never be applied within 10 feet from the top of a slope leading to a seawall, wetland or waterbody. The ordinance regulates landscape maintenance practices year-round and the sale and use of fertilizers containing nitrogen or phosphorous during the rainy season. Homeowners,

landscapers and lawn care services must follow the practices outlined in the ordinance or face fines up to $10,000 per day. All landscapers and fertilizer applicators in the county must display a Pinellas County-certification vehicle decal. The nitrogen/phosphorous ban helps prevent fertilizer runoff from reaching lakes, ponds, rivers, Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico and from leaching into groundwater. Excess nitrogen and phosphorous can cause harmful algae blooms that lower oxygen levels and lead to fish kills. Water quality testing by Pinellas County Environmental Management has shown significant reductions in both total nitrogen and phosphorous nutrients in our waterbodies since the ordinance was enacted. two numbers on the fertilizer label. Apply iron to keep lawns green during the summer without increasing growth. Use compost to enrich soil. Set lawn mower blade heights between 3½ to 4 inches for St. Augustine and Bahia turf to encourage deep roots that resist drought, fungus and pests. Buy plants adapted to Florida’s hot and humid climate and plant them in places that suit their sun and water needs. Pinellas County is one of more than 90 Florida communities that have summertime fertilizer restrictions. Landscapers and residents looking for more tips on landscape practices, reclaimed water, and fertilizer application can visit pinellascounty.org/fertilizer. ECO by Audubon Florida

Summer is Nesting Season The summer evening begins to fall across Pinellas County, shadows growing long on the beaches facing the Gulf of Mexico. On the sand, hundreds of seabirds and shorebirds rest, preen, and feed their tiny chicks. Unfortunately, feathers and personal fireworks don’t mix. While municipal fireworks are set off offshore and often in coordination with Audubon bird stewards who monitor these colonies of native birds - personal fireworks are often set off dangerously close to sensitive nesting birds. In addition to being illegal on most beaches, the loud noises and bright colors of the personal fireworks frighten the parents from their nests, leaving the downy-feathered chicks vulnerable and unprotected. While fireworks were once associated with the Independence Day holiday, their use now extends across the summer months. “Panicked chicks are known to run outside of the colonies,” says Dr. Marianne Korosy, director of Bird Conservation at Audubon Florida, “Once outside of the safety barriers they can be accidentally stepped on or injured by people who don’t see them.” In 2017, an Audubon Florida trail camera showed parent birds at a Black Skimmer colony in Pinellas County scattering off their nests after fireworks were deployed

nearby. Those birds returned, but such was not the case for another colony that, years earlier, was completely abandoned after fireworks were deployed inside the colony. After this sad event, Audubon Florida launched a novel program to heighten protection during the evening of July Fourth, including fencing off the colonies for twilight hours so the chicks do not scatter outside of the colony when disturbed by fireworks. All netting is taken down before midnight—in time for the nesting sea turtles to safely access the beach areas. The most common nesting birds in Southwest Florida are Black Skimmers, Least Terns, Wilson’s and Snowy Plovers, and American Oystercatchers. Black Skimmers have black and white bodies and bright orange bills, giving them a comical, Disney-esque appearance. Least Terns are mostly white with black caps and yellow bills, appearing to some like graceful, tiny gulls. Snowy and Wilson’s Plovers are the most difficult to see, but their gray and white forms can be spotted running along the beach as they search for food. Finally, oystercatchers sport orange bills, black heads, brown backs, and white stomachs. All nest in scoops within the sand itself, unprotected except by the presence of the raucous colony, Audubon Florida staff, and volunteers. Do you have more questions? Audubon Florida wants to answer them!

To protect the birds throughout the summer, beach-goers should: • Pay attention to signs and barriers and walk safely outside the roped off sections of beach. • Keep pups on a leash, or better yet, take them to dog-friendly designated beaches. • Notify bird stewards if eggs or nests are outside the roped-off area. • Dispose of trash in designated receptacles to keep the beaches clean. • If visitors see a bird steward, feel free to ask questions! Stewards love talking about Florida’s native bird species.

“Audubon Bird Stewards welcome your visits to active nesting sites to see nests and fluffy chicks up close with our binoculars and spotting scopes,” Dr. Korosy continues.

If you are interested in becoming a bird steward or participating in coastal conservation volunteer activities for the rest of the 2019 season or the 2020 season, please send an email with your name, telephone number, and general location to flconservation@audubon.org. Learn more about what you can do to help coastal species at flaudubon.org.

Beach Volleyball Tournament Host Goes to the Net – for Florida’s Beach-nesting Birds! Summertime is a great time for beach sports like volleyball. It’s also an important time for beach-nesting birds, which raise their families right on the bare sand. These birds face many natural threats, from toxic algae to red tide to rising seas, as well as disturbance from nearby human activities. Beachfront establishments are caught in the middle, often forced to choose between conserving their birdlife and providing fun events on the sand for their guests. One establishment in St. Pete Beach, Chris’s Beachside Bar, has found a way to accommodate both people and birds during their annual beach volleyball event. Chris’s staff members were aware of the busy Black Skimmer nesting colony located on the sand between their bar and the lapping waves. In advance of their Summer Smash Kick-off Pro-Am Tournament on June 1, Chris’s staff took extra steps to give these birds a helping hand. By voluntarily adding extra nets at ground level between the courts and the beach, they are helping prevent wayward balls from rolling into the colony where they would disturb the nesting birds and potentially harm eggs and chicks. Audubon Florida gives “Kudos to Chris’s Beachside Bar” for taking these extra steps to protect Florida’s native birdlife, and encourages other beachfront establishments to consider similar measures. Grandfather’s Gulfport Ah, Gulfport. Tiny cottages, brick streets, sandy-floored mom-and-pop stores, a few decent restaurants and a couple of bars. So little traffic that at night Baby Boomer hippies dance in the street where during the day seniors ride their three-wheel bikes. A nice community: dog friendly, elder friendly, 420 friendly, gay friendly.

But development is on the way. North End Village, the city’s first mixed-use building, is up and running with every retail spot taken and all the apartments leased. Baked goods at Gulfport’s first national-chain, Dunkin’ Donuts, are -literally -- selling like hotcakes, while its sister business, Baskin Robbins, is helping folks cool off with icy treats. Caddy’s, a local chain of bars and restaurants, is doing brisk business where Manatee’s by the Bay and many before them had tried, northeast of the Casino. The El Chapo Taco, FISH, Stargazer Quilting building is making way for the newest Fortunato’s Italian, later this summer. Maine-based Sea Dog Brewing Co., which redeveloped Captain K’s at the foot of the Blind Pass bridge in Treasure Island, has plans to take over the former Artisan, Bellini’s and Boca Bay Grille location just north of the courtyard, where Stella’s is expanding. More and more developers and businesses are clamoring to be a part of the Gulfport mystique. While some people fret that as redevelopment marches on Gulfport will lose its traditional character, Gulfport city council member Michael Fridovich wants folks to consider other versions of the city’s good old days.“Twenty years ago the place was filled with leather bars and motorcycle gangs,” he said.“Change is inevitable.”

It takes a village Despite some opposition and jumping through a number of regulatory hoops, St. Petersburg-based Culby Properties finished construction of North End Village, its three-story mixed-use project earlier this year. and it is completely leased, said Property Manager Richard Maltinos. The first retail tenant to take possession was Custom House Decor, which opened in April, carrying “good-quality, unique home products at an affordable price,” said owner Andrea Knettel. Gulfport residents, Knettel and her husband, Michael, chose the location because they thought it would be a good

If it’s August it must be

place to have a home decor store. Although they strive to sell “things you would not find in typical home goods stores,” she said,“we are paying attention to trends. We want to have a big variety -- something for everybody at different price points and lifestyles.” One of the store’s features is its large selection of local artists’ pieces.“If someone wants a custom piece we can put them in touch with the artist,” Knettel said. For those solely interested in artwork, right next door is Brenda McMahon Gallery, which features McMahon’s ceramics along with paintings, sculpture, jewelry, and art glass of other local artists. Gulfport-based McMahon is the mastermind behind ArtJones, an annual self-guided tour of artwork in the studios of Gulfport area artists. The gallery is part of McMahon’s vision of “creating a show of force of art and artists in Gulfport,” she said.“I see a flourishing artist community that hasn’t had much leadership.” One of her ideas is to revamp Gulfport’s beloved first-Friday, third-Saturday Art and Gallery Walks, which she wants to morph into more of an art-opening atmosphere. She’d also like to host art workshops open to artists and nonartists alike, saying.“I think we can create an incubator for achieving your artful life.” In July, Gulfport Cigars opened its doors to a different kind of collector, one who enjoys a fine smoking experience. After failing to ply his imported Latin-American wares at Gulfport’s Tuesday Market (because Carlos Padrón of Tampa had already cornered the market on cigars in that venue), Michael Allgire considered going completely online. He also considered the space where Mangia Gourmet (now Golden Dinosaurs) had been in operation, but would have had to purchase the restaurant,“kitchen and all,” he said. When he discovered an opening at North End Village, he jumped at the opportunity and leased two storefronts.“Business has been really good for a brand-new store,”Allgire said. A Friend Who Bakes plans to take over the remaining spot later this summer. Owner Brittney Sherley is crafting her bread, cookies, cakes, pies and rolls in a shared commercial kitchen, but has always dreamed of a cinnamon-scented retail location. She and husband, Travis,“wanted it to be in Gulfport,” she said.“We live here and it’s the community we love.”

GeckoSeason By Caron Schwartz Each year Gulfport celebrates the end of summer with three festive events dedicated to the gecko, our mascot and favorite reptile. The theme for this year’s festival is “Geckos of the Round Table.” Get a preview of the artwork to be auctioned at the GeckoBall at the ArtGecko Show & Reception on Friday, August 2, 6 - 8 p.m. at the Hickman Theater. In addition to gecko-theme pieces, the exhibition includes a sample of participating artists’ regular body of work. Artists include: Brenda McMahon, Eric Folsom, Diane Bragg, Monika Watson, Tom Pitzen, Crea Egan Romanelli, Joan Allen, and Tim Seller. Nothing marks the start of GeckoSeason like the annual GeckoCrawl, Saturday, August, 10, 4 - 9 pm. For $25 you get a ticket that allows you to sample drinks at different restaurants and bars along Gulfport’s waterfront, and that drinking route is also a five-card stud poker run route. Best and worst hands win a prize, along with a random player chosen from the entries. Nondrinkers can play for $10. Next up is the GeckoBall, Saturday, August 24, 6 - 11 p.m. at the Gulfport Casino. This year we’re going full King Arthur with “Geckos of the Round Table.” The costume ball promises to be a celebration of medieval times and characters including knights, maidens and dragons. In addition to the music, dancing, drinking and merriment, Gulfport coronates a new GeckoQueen. There’s also a silent auction with proceeds benefiting three local charities the Enroy Foundation Inc., Gulfport Historical Society and Women With Purpose. Tickets are $35. The absolutely free GeckoFest, the 19th annual, takes place Saturday, August 31, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. in downtown Gulfport. The streets of the waterfront village will be filled with live music on two stages, a plethora of food and art and craft vendors, and loads of family-friendly activities. Buskers including acrobats, magicians, daredevils, dancers, fire-eaters, aerialists and more will entertain the troops. Costumes welcomed. Plus there’s a parade! Parking and admission to Geckofest are complimentary and the event is pet and family-friendly. For more information, please visit Facebook.com/GeckoFest or call 727-322-5217. She envisions the store as “warm and inviting,” but not a sit-down cafe. She anticipates a basic level of coffee and tea along with a few outside seats. “There’s gourmet coffee at Sumitra across the street,” she said. Sherley said she will keep supplying cinnamon rolls and fruit breads to Stella’s, which will also be across the street when it makes its move to the former Yummy’s location. “Wholesale is not my preference,” she said. “I like to connect with the people who consume the things I make. I like to see their face and build a relationship with my customers.”

Across the street: Art Village Courtyard Between North End Village and its across-thestreet neighbor Art Village Courtyard, Culby Properties virtually rules the 2900 block of Beach Blvd. S. And there’s change afoot there. Stella’s is replacing Yummy’s, Vintage Wine Lounge has become a happening night spot, and Kelly Wright is bring beer and bar food to the space where T and Me used to reside. Since brewing is not permitted in downtown Gulfport (it’s considered manufacturing, and the area isn’t zoned for that) the North End Tap House will serve only beer on tap and in cans. The focus will be on Florida brands, Wright said.“What we serve depends on where we can get our beer and what people want to drink.” The goal is to make the Courtyard,“more of a gathering place,” she said.“People can listen to music on the stage, enjoy our beer and deli-style food, or enjoy a glass of wine and small plates from Vintage, or even loosen up with something from Low Tide Kava Bar.”

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2019 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

Let there be ice cream Once an ice cream desert, now Gulfport is ice cream dessert central. The recently opened Dunkin’ Donuts on Gulfport Blvd. is not only the first chain store to come to town, it’s also home to Baskin Robbins. But there’s more than Jamoca Almond Fudge to be had on Gulfport Blvd. Just up the street John Rieseback offers upward of 90 flavors at his Smokin’ J’s barbeque joint. He got the idea when tasked with providing something unique for Gulfport’s chef’s table charity event. “I wanted to make something I didn’t have in the restaurant,” Riesebeck said. His Smoked Vanilla with Candied Bacon ice cream was such a hit he decided to serve it in the restaurant too. Since he already made pickles, Riesebeck soon added Sweet and Sassy Pickle ice cream. “With that combo I guess I’ve cornered the market on pregnant women,” he mused. Adding more ice cream machines and freezers, he expanded the line to include vegan and lactose-free ice creams and flavors ranging from avocado to sweet yellow corn along with the more familiar varieties of chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, pistachio, coffee, ad infinitum. Next up, malts, milkshakes and old-fashioned candies.“This is my playground,” Riesebeck said. For those who don’t want to venture out of downtown Gulfport, Backfin Blue now fulfills the need for a cold treat. The restaurant is closed for the summer, but on weekends owner Harold Russell is serving up gelato. He had been working on the landscaping around the

Beach Blvd. S. restaurant, and people kept on coming up and asking,“Where can we get ice cream?” he said. He and his son, Camden, decided to answer the question by offering a dozen flavors of California based Villa Dolce gelato and sorbet.

Should we stay or should we grow? As for those who worry that Gulfport will become the Key West of Pinellas County, Councilman Fridovich said there’s only so much the city can do. He sited Florida’s Bert Harris Act. The 1995 law basically says if a municipality tries to prevent a property owner from getting the most bang for her buck, she can sue. “The law means you can’t prevent chain stores or tall buildings here,” Fridovich said.“There’s only a certain amount of things the council can do to maintain Gulfport.” One solution is to enact height restrictions to avoid a “canyon effect” and other zoning rules. Gulfport’s character is in flux, Fridovich said.“The character in a sense is driven by the people who are going to come in and rent or buy,” he said.“You’d hope they would have more common sense than money.” A newcomer that seems to have common sense is Caddy’s, which now stands where Manatee’s used to at the corner of Beach and Shore boulevards. The local chain of five (soon to be six) is owned by St. Petersburg Sun Pubs. Caddy’s is always looking for waterfront projects, said Marketing Director David Culhane. Gulfport had been on the company’s radar for a while because,“It’s an up and coming area,” Culhane said. “It’s a gorgeous place.” The company understood that Gulfport is “a community, more than a town,” Culhane said. A few of the ways the company merged Caddy’s into Gulfport was by conducting a survey on what to include on the building mural that would replace the beloved manatee mural. They hired the same artist, August Vernon, to paint the new one, then had a contest to name the mural’s gecko.“We do this everywhere we go, Culhane said.“We want every Caddy’s to work with the local community.” Even Gulfport legend O’Maddy’s welcomed the new kid on the block.“(Owner) Joe Guenther has worked with closely with us,” Culhane said. “We see it as a partnership, not competition.”

ENCOURAGING WORDS

By Dennis Merritt Jones

Could Music Help Heal the World?

When Mac Davis penned these lyrics for his 1970s classic pop song,“I Believe in Music,” he was expressing what just about every musician of the time was feeling when he sang or played an instrument. It certainly was true for me, and I suspect for anyone who has ever been a musician, and shall be as long as music moves through the hearts and souls of human beings. The spoken and unspoken sentiment most every musician and music lover will attest to is that music holds the power to unify human beings.

As musicians, when we commingle our desire to express through our music, and we experience it together, we create something that no one of us could create alone. When this happens, it is literally divine harmony as the soul rejoices in its oneness with something far greater than the individual “I.” Some of my most intense and blissful peak moment experiences have happened while playing music with others.

Music calls us home. It reminds us that beyond all the apparent differences we seem to have, we all come from the The spiritual significance of music is that it brings people same place—our unity in spirit. That is the power and together at a level of vibration that transcends significance of music. Whether you create boundaries, culture, language, religion, Music calls us home. music or just enjoy listening to it, music gender, age, color, and politics — a place brings us together to celebrate, co-create where we can all experience our sameness. • Five mosaics from ancient Antioch that are part of the MFA’s founding collection will be on display together for the first time in late summer 2019.

Copper lips. A pensive gaze. Serpentine tresses adorned with an ivy wreath. Meet Dionysus. The Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg recently installed a rare 2,200 year old Greek bronze head of the god of wine and theater in its ancient art gallery. The hollow-cast bronze sculpture is on long-term loan from a private collector. There are fewer than 30 surviving largescale Greek original bronze statues in the world, according to Senior Curator Michael Bennett, and only six are in the United States Displaying this work of art continues the MFA’s ongoing initiative to enhance the museum’s presentation of ancient art. Other upcoming offerings designed to bring ancient art to the forefront at the museum: • Back to the Future with Dr. Michael Bennett, a year-long series of lectures, gallery spotlights, and intimate garden conversations centered on the MFA’s distinguished collection of antiquities.

The MFA is also excited to share that the closing date for the exhibition, A Feast for the Eyes: European Masterpieces from the Grasset Collection, has been extended through Labor Day. The Grasset family has generously allowed the MFA to keep their precious works of art on view for the community to enjoy until Monday, Sept 2. We also want you to know that Above the Fold: New Expressions in Origami is closing a week earlier than expected. The last day to catch the much talked about traveling exhibition is now Sunday, Sept. 22. In other news, the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance is proud to again offer the Jim Rolston Memorial Professional Development Grant to a St. Petersburg artist. The $5,000 grant is intended to provide financial assistance for training or education in improving or developing new art forms that will facilitate taking his/her work to the next level. An accomplished artist and sculptor, Jim Rolston was a founding board member of the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance who found his artistic voice when he was able to devote all of his time to his art after retiring. Continually working to develop his talent, he was committed to arts education and training. Jim’s family and friends established this fund in his memory, a fitting tribute to his belief that an artist’s journey is never over – there is always more to experience and learn. This grant for visual, literary or performing arts provides an artist the opportunity to transform their talents and interpret their experiences with the world around them.

The application deadline is Friday, Sept. 6, at 5 pm. For more information and an application see Jim Rolston Professional Development Grant at stpeteartsalliance.org. Fine arts and fashion fundraiser What do a fashion show, luncheon and musicale have in common? All will take place during Calvary Episcopal Church’s fundraiser on Saturday, August 17. The 1 pm to 4 pm festivities will be in the church parish hall at 1615 1st St. in Indian Rocks Beach and will serve to kick off the fall/winter series of fine arts programs presented by the church. The theme for the afternoon is the sounds and sights of summer with a touch of French Impressionist influence in some of the musical selections. Matt Burke, musical director at Calvary, on keyboards, will be joined by Victoria Garcia, area harpist and Leslie Long, choir member at Calvary. Colette’s of Madeira Beach will showcase fashions for beach, travel, casual, business and semi-formal wear. Tickets are $20 per person or $150 for a table of eight. By Caron Schwartz for survivors to emigrate to Palestine.

Inhale Einstein Exhale Hitler (thank you Acoustinauts) The Florida Holocaust Museum has unveiled a rare letter handwritten by Albert Einstein, which is now on view in the museum’s permanent exhibition, “History, Heritage and Hope.” The document was an early draft of an open letter printed in “der Aufbau,” a journal for German speaking Jews in the U.S. It was published on Nov. 16, 1945, to coincide with the seven year anniversary of Kristallnacht. The letter was a plea to the Jewish community to help Holocaust survivors. It called on the United Nations to work for peace and for Great Britain to open immigration quotas

The letter was donated by past board chair and longtime museum volunteer Irene Weiss of Palm Harbor and her brother Peter Cohn of California. The donors’ grandfather, Dr. Siegfried Kurt Glaser, helped Einstein write it in 1945, and he kept it until giving it to their father, Werner Cohn. Upon their father’s death, the two decided to give it to the museum, a place dear to Weiss’s heart.

Run to Fun Home through August 18 at American Stage Every once in a while a Broadway musical comes along that surprises, moves and excites audiences in

ways only a truly landmark piece of theatre can. This groundbreaking and life-affirming new musical was the event of the Broadway season, receiving raves from critics and audiences alike and garnering five Tony Awards. Based on Alison Bechdel’s best-selling graphic memoir, Fun Home introduces us to Alison at three different ages. We follow her as she explores and unravels the many mysteries of her childhood in this refreshingly honest and intimate musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes. Tickets: $48 to $58 through 727.823.PLAY (7529) or boxoffice@americanstage.org. American Theater is located at 163 3rd Street North, St. Petersburg, FL 33701.

“The secret to a happy marriage is if you can be at peace with someone within four walls, if you are content because the one you love is near to you, either upstairs or downstairs, or in the same room, and you feel that warmth that you don’t find very often, then that is what love is all about.” – Sir Bruce Forsyth

Make the most of this time of many opportunities and good fortune brought your way, as it will be eleven years before it returns again! The Sun, Venus and Mars are transiting in romantic, dramatic Leo the first half of this month! We like to do things in a big way now, so watch spending and trying to do everything on a large scale. Thinking planet Mercury is in Cancer until the 11th so we make decisions based on feelings and intuition. Then, Mercury in Leo brings a creative approach to thinking until the 29th when it enters the analytical sign, Virgo! The Full Sturgeon Moon in Aquarius on the 15th has emotions running high! Channel energy into creative projects and self-expression. Action planet Mars enters logical Virgo on the 18th and love planet Venus follows on the 21st. This romantic pair will be cool and calculating as they travel along together in a practical manner. The Sun joins this pair on the 23rd, bringing modesty and discrimination into daily life. We give great attention to detail with these three planets all in the sign that analyzes and calculates its every move. We enjoy a routine now and may become service oriented in both personal and professional areas. The New Moon also in Virgo begins the next lunar cycle on the 30th. With FIVE planets in this sign we are more exacting than ever and whatever we do will be done extremely well! Watch for being hard on yourself and others or becoming too critical. Find a charity you would like to join even for a day and bring out the best in all you do, even the little things!

“Get Sirius About Your Future”

September 2019 Astrology Forecast We begin September with four planets in Virgo the exacting, analytical sign of perfection and the influences show in all we do and the decisions we make. Clear, logical thinking prevails over emotional whims and priorities are easily set as we are organized and efficient. But soon the cosmos brings our lunar cycle to a peak with an action-packed Full Harvest Moon in Pisces on the 14th! This is an intuitive, introspective moon with a sensitive, compassionate vibe. Our sympathetic nature comes out as this moon reveals the unknown or unseen to us at this climax. Also, on the very same day, both Mercury and Venus visit Libra, the sign of fairness and balance! Indecision in thinking, love and money matters may begin as we want to see all sides of every situation and wear out hearts on our sleeves! A very busy day in the cosmos indeed with so much happening at once! The expressive Sun remains in logical Virgo until the 23rd, along with action planet Mars, which stays there all month. These two influences will keep us on task and make sure we observe the details in all we do. Mars in this sign will get the job done orderly and loves to work hard; let’s take advantage of all it offers through the end of this month. Summer ends and Fall begins as we celebrate the Autumn Equinox on the 23rd, when the Sun enters Libra! The sign of relationships, peace, harmony, and beauty shifts our focus to social time and partnerships with others! We now have three planets in the sign of compromise, cooperation, and diplomacy; instinctively indicating a time for us all to come together and prepare for winter's arrival. The New Moon in Libra on the 28th begins a fresh lunar cycle, with so many options and directions presented to us it may be hard to choose from them!

A Uniquely Better Real Estate Company

on the market for $1,200,000

If you’re paying more than 4% to sell your home, you’re paying way too much! “We created REALean to fill a need in the real estate industry: concierge-level full service for sellers without the antique 6% (or more) fee. When we list homes for sale, we charge 4%. If we are the only agent involved in the sale, we lower our fee to just 3%. Since 2014, we’ve now saved sellers over $1,150,000 had they paid 6% to sell their home and we sold 80 homes in 2018. Real estate commissions are negotiable, and it’s your hard-earned equity.” – Kevin and Lisa Cahill

3 Big Reasons to call REALean to sell your home: #1 You will get a lot more money: REALean listings sell closer to the asking price than the MLS average home. #2 Your home will sell faster: REALean homes sell in one-third the time of the MLS average home. #3 Your home is more likely to sell: Your home, listed by REALean, is much more likely to sell.
