From the Publishers Tempus Fugit! Time flies, when you are having fun, as they say. When I was young, living in the ice and snow on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, winter seemed to stretch on forever. Whenever I lamented “I wish I was old enough to…” my folks would say, “Be patient, enjoy your youth, time will go by fast enough.” Looking back, I see how right they were. Last year, Renee and I celebrated 50 years of married life. Our relationship was based on a lie. We celebrated my 24th birthday together four months before I confessed: I was only 19. She said, “It’s only a number” and Renee agreed to marry me anyway. Our son was born less than a year after we wed. We moved from Brandon to Pass-A-Grille 35 years ago so Jordan could be a day student at Admiral Farragut Academy. Our careers had already evolved from public accounting and dance education to publishing a few years prior. Our first publishing efforts in the 1980s, Office Guide to Tampa Bay, helped put our area on the map for corporate relocation decision makers throughout the nation. In Pass-A-Grille we were recruited as volunteers to start a newsletter for the Pass-A-Grille community by its president, and historic preservationist, Jay Anderson. Eight years of publishing Grille Bits, mostly a volunteer effort, became the foundation for the start of Paradise NEWS in 1995. With more than half our married life invested in sharing Paradise NEWS with 100,000 friends and neighbors, some of whom we have yet to meet, we feel thankful for the directions the universe has provided for us. Somehow people come into our lives whenever they are needed. Our longtime astrologer Sarah Lyons, predicted some changes were coming in key personnel. She was right. This time last year we lost Zelda Troiano, who had been our Arts and Leisure/Events editor for four years. She had contributed to her final issue of Paradise NEWS just weeks before she passed away. Our incredible proofreader, Buddy Baker, had been furloughed at the newspaper (thanks to the pandemic) and was recruited to add what Zelda did to his contributions. He has done a stellar job as events curator and “grubby grammarian and corrections officer” this past year. Next month, Nanette Wiser, our longtime friend, contributing writer, senior writer and eventually executive editor is taking a sabbatical. We thank Nanette for her valuable contributions to Paradise NEWS over the years and wish her much success and happiness. Meanwhile, Steve Traiman, our senior feature writer, has composed an enticing article about Jenna Payne’s Water Warrior’s Alliance. Our Art News editor and Hanging Around author, Caron Schwartz, starts her new column SPIRITED ADVENTURES. This month we take a peak at what’s ahead for St. Pete Beach, thanks to support from Biltmore Construction, one of our area’s top quality builders. PHOTO DESIGN BY JANET NUMMI

We thank Coast Brothers for sponsoring a recipe column for the past year and hope to see them return in the future. In the meantime, we are hoping to bring you a new slant on our recipe column soon. Thanks for being such loyal readers!

The Gulfport Merchants Chamber (GMC), was created by a merger some years ago by the Gulfport Merchants Association and the Greater Gulfport Chamber of Commerce. Their mission is to stimulate and support the wellbeing and economic growth of its members through implementation and coordination of marketing, ethical and equitable advocacy, event coordination, economic development programs, strategic membership alliances, and education efforts. During the year they host or support several events designed to bring visitors into Gulfport and to the doorsteps of their members’ businesses. They maintain a Welcome Center in the middle of the action, a block from the casino, where staff and volunteers hand out brochures, business cards, and provide additional information and recommendations to visitors. Membership is $175 for 2022. In 2021, their Gulfport Welcome Center, located at 3101 Beach Blvd. S, Suite 1, greeted over 4,000 visitors. Members are encouraged to share their business’ information at the Welcome Center. Online, they provide a Facebook page, www.facebook. com/visitgulfportflorida and a 8

The Pinellas County Commission took a first step in late February when it approved a countywide affordable housing compact with Forward Pinellas and the cities of Clearwater, Largo, Pinellas Park and St. Petersburg. The compact outlines a common set of policy focus areas to create more affordable housing. Compact partners will collaborate on a housing action plan to increase affordability through developer incentives, local funding, zoning changes and other potential policies. Pinellas County, Forward Pinellas and the cities of Clearwater, Largo, Pinellas Park and St. Petersburg officially launched a new partnership in late February aimed at increasing production of affordable housing in the coming years. This shows we did it,” said Chuck Carden, Tampa Bay Water’s general manager. A new solar array at the C.W. Bill Young Regional Reservoir will offset electricity consumption for Tampa Bay Water and is one of the nine projects currently in construction for the utility. Others include a new temporary booster station that will bring an additional 5 million gallons per day (mgd) of drinking water to southern Hillsborough County as early as summer 2022. These and the rest of Tampa Bay Water’s recently completed, current and upcoming construction projects are outlined in the quarterly construction update presented at the January 2022 board meeting.

Cross Bay Ferry The Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority received a $4,863,280 federal government grant last October. Ferry advocates had less than two weeks to apply for the grant. This grant will allow HART to significantly reduce operational costs while expanding the Cross Bay Ferry service, helping to grow intercity and commuter ferry service. “It will grow a popular transit option between Tampa and St. Pete, reduce congestion, create local jobs, support small businesses and increase connectivity in the Tampa Bay region. In fact, over 90% of the CBF passengers patronize restaurants, shops, museums and sporting events in these two urban areas. This investment is a win-win-win for our community and all of our neighbors,” said Ed Turanchik, attorney for HMS Ferry. The money will be used for a new 350-person ferry if there is one available to purchase, Turanchik said. The Cross Bay Ferry currently uses a 149-person ferry on a seasonal lease. The grant will also help establish commuter service between South Hillsborough County and MacDill Air Force Base. The same boat would be used for both the commuter service and the nighttime/weekend service between Tampa and St. Petersburg.

PROPERTY LAW

Travels through Property Law by Tom Brodersen, Esq.

What’s in that Listing Contract? Many people hire attorneys to review both listing contracts and purchase and sale agreements before they sign them (and often prefer to have attorneys close the transaction as well). Other people seem perfectly comfortable signing these multi-page documents without even ever reading them through themselves. They are often told they are “standard” agreements, and seem to assume that they are therefore “safe.” I would suggest that there is no such thing as a “standard” agreement. There are a variety of forms of listing contracts, with different legal ramifications, just as there are different forms of purchase and sale contracts. For our part, we real estate lawyers warn that many problems can’t be fully remedied after the agreements have been executed. So, starting first with listing contracts, just what is in those agreements that can come back and hurt the owner? First of all, a listing is the agreement between a property owner and a real

estate broker by which that firm is engaged to give their best efforts to find a buyer ready, willing and able to purchase a property on the terms offered (or other terms the seller may ultimately accept). Some of the problems in listing agreements are in four different areas: 1) Many listings provide for binding arbitration in the case of a disagreement between you and your broker. The problem with arbitration is the concern that they may favor the businesses that hire them. In addition, if you disagree with their ruling, there is no appeal.

2) Listing contracts often include language that would, under certain circumstances, leave you liable to a pay full commission even if there is no closing. Most sellers would never expect such an outcome, and I always strike that language. 3) In the event that the seller changes his mind about selling, or just doesn’t think the broker is doing an adequate job, there are often very tough conditions attached to cancellation, again a situation that most sellers would not expect. 4) Some listing agreements also provide that the broker can transfer the listing to another broker should they desire. It seems to me like they should ask you, the seller, for permission if they want to do that. To their credit, most real estate brokers work very hard to get your property sold and are usually successful. But just as good fences make for good neighbors, good contracts make for good professional relationships.

Pass-A-Grille Way is much improved after three years of reconstruction. The city has been working to restore its leaky aging sewer system for what seems like a decade. Final sewer work, power undergrounding and the rebuilding of the old Howard Johnsons into a “new” Hilton Garden Inn caused serious traffic backups on southbound Gulf Blvd. and in both directions for most of the past year. We might as well get used to it. Now that the sewer system reconstruction is wrapping up, the heat is about to be turned up on several development and redevelopment plans that have been simmering, waiting for, or pending approval. Construction of the prospective Corey Landings project, 343 luxury apartments at the east end of Corey Avenue, should disrupt few, thanks to the dead-end nature of the location, other than perhaps some of the folks coming to hear the Tom Kats 16-piece Big Band on Monday nights at the Blue Parrot. We should be learning more soon about redevelopment of the Tradewinds Resort property, including the old Coral Reef site, where the 217-room Sugar Sands was proposed five years ago. They were already the largest on Florida’s West Coast and have also since acquired the Alden Suites Resort, adjacent to the Coral Reef property on the north side, which had been owned by the Renfrow family since the 50’s. Mayor Al Johnson has said that he has met with the Tradewinds’ owner to discuss plans for redevelopment, and he likes what he has heard. Veteran hotel developer Kevin Bowden had the Cambria in the heart of Madeira Beach built from scratch. Later this year, he plans to replace the 42-room Schooner with a brand new nine-story, 56-room boutique resort. His investment group had also purchased the Miramar Resort at 4200 Gulf Blvd. in 2017 and hopes to demolish the existing 27-room 1953 motel and build a 7-story, 54-room “Luxury boutique hotel.” As the first project

likely to be built on the sand after the lifting of the sewer hookup moratorium, the Miramar is getting its share of scrutiny. Commissioners have the authority to allocate a limited number of rooms from a pool of development rights in the boutique hotel district. The Miramar needs 15 of those. A resolution authorizing redevelopment of the Miramar Resort at a height greater than 50 feet and density greater than 30 units per acre, including 15 units from the “Boutique Hotel District Density Pool” and rooftop bar, passed unanimously on first reading in February 2021 and became final with approval of a conditional use permit on April 27th, 2021. The Don Cesar Resort is planning to build a 10,000 square foot convention and meeting space over the parking lot at the north side of the historic hotel. Completed in 1929, the resort made it through the great depression thanks to a spring training contract with the New York Yankees. It served as a veteran’s rehab facility after the war and was almost torn down. There are several other redevelopment projects that had been announced, then shelved. Robert Czyszczon of Plaza Beach Resort proposed to be the first resort redeveloped under the city’s new comprehensive plan, but they decided to go retro and embrace the “old Florida feel” of the location. I am hoping that all these developers will be cautious in the selection of their construction partners, to ensure that they are reliable, skilled, environmentally conscious, and preferably, locally based. Here is a sign I would like to see on some of these construction sites. They do great work, have recent experience building on our beach and even more recently on our neighbors’ beaches to the south. Our cover photo this month, the Zota Beach Resort on Long Boat Key in Sarasota, is a recent accomplishment of a locally based, family-owned and run construction company that likely looks a lot like some of ours will. Biltmore Construction Co., Inc., located at 1055 Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Belleair, has been building along our Florida beaches for over six decades: Sandalwood Hotel in 1957 (Redington Beach), Schrafft’s Motor Inn in 1965, Sirata Hotel addition in 1989, Holiday Inn addition in 1990 (St. Pete Beach), original Clearwater Beach Hotel in 1988, Howard Johnson’s, Sea Stone Suites 1988, Sea Wake Hotel Renovations 1988, and Sheraton Sand Key Resort 1975 (Clearwater Beach). During that time, they have developed a reputation as a high-quality local builder that understands the unique needs and conditions of Florida beaches environmentally and sustainably. Their structures have stood the test of numerous Category IV Hurricanes in the Keys.

“My dad moved us here from Cheraw, South Carolina, right at the end of World War II, when I was three years old. He worked for a developer and his job was to buy up land. At that time, Belleair Estates was heavily overgrown with alligators and snakes,” says Ed Parker Jr., CEO of Biltmore Construction.“I believe he bought the whole plot of land for about $250,000. He cleared the land, got some different house plans and started selling houses.

“That was in 1946 and the beginning of beautiful Belleair Estates. In 1954 he founded Biltmore Construction and since that time our focus in private commercial construction has included hotels, condos, luxury resorts and spas along with office buildings, banks, restaurant and retail. I remember back in 1991 when MIDO bought the Belleview Biltmore Hotel. We really enjoyed helping them restore it. Our conference table is made with wood from the Belleview Biltmore. It’s our way of carrying some of our past into the future.”

They have 1,000 online reviews with an average of well over 4 stars. Room rates are regularly in the $450 range and desirable rooms on weekends can be close to $1,000/night. Speaking of reviews, Biltmore Construction has more than their share of accolades too. Mark Pistillo of Pinellas County Real Estate Mgmt. said,“Biltmore Construction performed exceptionally well. Project finished early and under budget. The project manager and project superintendent always handled the county’s internal users concerns effectively and courteously. Just a great project!” “Biltmore Construction has completed over 25 projects for the college ranging from minor repairs, renovations, site and drainage modifications to additions to existing buildings. Most recently they completed the new James Center for Molecular and Life Sciences (LEED Platinum) with a total budget of $30 million dollars, as well as several other major projects including the Peter Armacost Library, the Iota Student Residences, the GO Pavilion, and currently construction of a new Visual Arts Building.

Biltmore Construction’s most recent luxury hotel project was The Zota Beach Resort on Longboat Key. This new six-story luxury oceanfront hotel tower and lobby connecting to the hotel’s existing five-story tower included all amenities such as new pool, restaurant, banquet and meeting rooms, administration and staff offices, and luxury spa. Site work included beachfront alterations, updated entrance, outside waterfall, tropical landscaping, and new parking. In 2020, it was named one of the top 30 resorts in the state. “Biltmore Construction performed at a very high level, with a strong focus on quality and meeting the needs of the customer. They were integral members of the design team. During both design and construction phases, they were committed to the city’s desire to build a high quality building with great attention to detail and functionality. HOLISTIC HEALTH

By Camilla Nichols, M.S.

Wellness Journey Nutrition and wellness have always been passions of mine. During my 30+ years as an attorney in California, I shopped the farmers’ market, cooking healthy meals with seasonal ingredients at home, gave cooking classes and catered events in my spare time. I envisioned ultimately helping people live healthy, balanced lives as my full-time mission. I took some classes at a holistic health school, but decided that I needed to know more about the science of nutrition and wellness, so I earned a MS in Nutritional Sciences at night, a major achievement for a former English major to not only pass, but enjoy, biochemistry. When my kids grew up and left the nest, I decided it was time to branch out from my law career into health and wellness. My first adventure was making organic extra virgin olive oil in Santa Ynez, California. For a year I tended a 1,300-acre, 3,000 olive tree orchard with five varietals. I learned to trim trees and fix irrigation lines and tend my sheep and chickens. When it was harvest

time, the olives were hand harvested and milled on-site. My olive oil exceeded both COOC and USDA standards for extra virgin olive oil. That entire year was magical as I observed the seasons, growth and harvest.

In 2018, I lived in a community in Uganda as a volunteer to work with single mothers and orphans, an experience that transformed me. I expected poor health and hygiene, but the people were loving, generous and healthy. Thanks to a plant-based diet with meat once a week, no sugar, junk food, dairy or alcohol, I found diabetes, heart disease, cancer, obesity and other chronic illnesses that plague Western civilization were almost nonexistent. With no refrigeration, food was bought fresh daily at the local market and slow-cooked over a charcoal stove. After Africa, I visited Florida thinking it was temporary. Discovering St. Pete Beach, I felt right at home with a weekly farmers’ market and growing holistic community where I could write, cook and enjoy the beach. Soon, I started cooking for neighbors on Sunday with my farmers market haul. They clamored to learn my healthy recipes, so I wrote a cookbook to teach people how to use fresh food for easy-to-prepare healthy dishes.

My core philosophy is keep things simple. That applies to not only food, but life. Balance is also a critical theme for me. We can get out of balance physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Our society is one of constant stimulation or entertainment. We are disconnected from ourselves and our personal needs. In my book, A Gardener for Humanity, I talk about how people, like plants, have some essential needs that must be met in order to grow and thrive. People, like plants, can suffer damage at different stages of growth. Our words and deeds impact others; they should encourage and support others, not harm them. People underestimate the power of a smile or a kind word. A Gardener for Humanity explores how we all, at times, need to be tended, and how we can help tend ourselves and others, BUT we must always start by tending ourselves. I would gently encourage you to begin today.

LIVE PAIN FREE “She saved my life,” says Jean P., a Tampa Bay area resident suffering from the painful side effects of peripheral neuropathy. “My feet and legs were extremely painful, and my doctor told me there was nothing they could do and that I would have to take gabapentin for the rest of my life.” Then she met St. Petersburg’s Dr. Rebecca Gibbons, AP, D.O.M., RN who offers non-drug, non-surgical options for those who have chronic pain and complex chronic conditions. As an RN for over 15 years, Dr. Gibbons integrates her Western medicine training with effective Eastern medicine strategies to help people suffering from chronic pain, especially those who have been diagnosed as “hopeless” or “untreatable.”

Peripheral neuropathy is the pain, discomfort and numbness caused by nerve damage of the peripheral nervous system. Jean explained that daily tasks like opening doors and using the bathroom were overwhelmingly painful. “How can you live for the next 30 years when you don’t even want to get out of bed to do simple things?” She was experiencing the burning, numbness, tingling and sharp pains that those suffering with neuropathy often describe. “The way that I would describe it, is that it’s equivalent to walking on glass.” Jean hadn’t worn socks in five years and was wearing shoes two sizes too big so that nothing would “touch her feet.” Unfortunately, Jean’s story is familiar to more than 3 million Americans suffering from peripheral neuropathy. Are you experiencing the same disheartening prognosis, and don’t know where to turn for treatment and relief?

• Lack of sleep at night because of the burning in your feet? • Difficulty walking, shopping, or doing any activity for more than 30 minutes because of the pain? • Struggling with balance and living in fear that you might fall? • Has your doctor told you to “just live with the pain” and you’re taking medications that aren’t working or have uncomfortable side effects? Founder of Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine in St. Petersburg, Dr. Gibbons uses the science of acupuncture and other integrative techniques to assist in increasing blood flow, expediting recovery and healing to treat this debilitating nerve pain. “Now when I go to bed at night I don’t have those shooting pains. I don’t have that burning sensation. I don’t have pain coming up my legs,” says Jean enthusiastically, describing life after receiving Dr. Gibbons treatments. ‘“can wear socks and shoes!” Jean and her sister now operate a successful dog walking business, sometimes covering up to 5 miles a day. “It’s life altering. As far as I am concerned, Dr. Gibbons saved my life!” There is so much to enjoy in St. Pete and Tampa Bay. Make a good day a great day by taking the first step to recovery. If you’ve missed too many tee times because of pain or missed walking the beach because you’re afraid of falling, it’s time to call Dr. Gibbons and the staff at...

CBD Might Help You Sleep! A good night’s sleep is essential to your overall health and wellbeing. A good night’s rest also contributes to memory formation, helps grow and repair muscle and tissue, and prevents sickness. Seventy percent of Americans report not sleeping enough. That is one of the top reasons people come to a CBD store. Experiencing insomnia is way more than frustrating. Close your eyes and imagine you are waking up refreshed from a full, restful night of sleep. Relief! Imagine if you or someone you know who struggles with sleep finds a solution that solves the struggle. For me, the solution has been CBD and the cannabis plant. After trying sleep studies, doctors appointments, pharmaceuticals, nothing was helping me sleep. Finally, MDs and cannabis specialists at the world-renowned AIMS Institute in Seattle prescribed the cannabis plant formula that worked for me. I was finally able to get relief! If you’re confused about cannabis, don’t worry. I hope I can bring some clarity to you about hemp (CBD) (cannabis). I’m passionate about educating our community on this plant. I’ll continue in this column to explore the ways cannabis is helping me heal, literally! A recent Gallup poll found an estimated 42% of cannabidiol users take CBD to address mental health conditions, including insomnia. The beauty of CBD is limited downsides, not dealing with unwanted side effects or dependency. For decades, the U.S. government classified hemp (CBD) as a Schedule 1 narcotic until the Farm Bill was passed in 2018, opening up funding for credible research to begin. Therefore, currently CBD relies mostly on anecdotal evidence as it awaits double-blind and placebo-controlled studies. Physicians report anecdotally seeing a lot of results in their patients. Many people who use CBD for sleep report life changing results. It seems to be beneficial in helping to normalize sleep patterns. I certainly can attest to that for me! There are various forms of CBD available-tincture, capsules, edibles, vape, etcetera. The Goods carries organic, high-quality, lab-tested products. It is our passion to help others as we have been helped so much by the cannabis plant. Check out our website at www.thegoodsfl.com. Stop by The Goods, 2939 Central Ave., St. Petersburg and meet me, Margo, and Oliver, my shop dog! Happy to help you navigate the cannabis world. Call me at the store 727-289-6020. ‘Live Love St. Pete’ provides OVER $10K in supplies to Underserved Children St. Petersburg resident Melody Proud, who has a passion to help underserved school children in the area, has come up with a novel way to get the whole community involved. It started in 2021 with a unique series of “Live Love St. Pete” t-shirts featuring an artistic view of the St. Pete skyline that she sold, donating 100% of the proceeds to provide resources for underserved area school kids. The project has grown from there. During the first year of the non-profit, Live Love St. Pete donated over $10,000 worth of supplies to kids at four area schools, and supported The Kind Mouse, a St. Pete food bank that feeds local children with food insecurities. They provided children with school uniforms, underwear, school supplies, incentives for testing, special t-shirts to reward top scholars, several Christmas gifts and gift cards for children and families in need, special PDQ lunches, and breakfast food.

Because of the overwhelming success of the Live Love St. Pete brand, they have continued to add merchandise like hats, cozies, coffee mugs, tumblers, reusable shopping bags, ornaments, and bumper stickers. 100% of net proceeds from the sales of all Live Love St. Pete merchandise goes directly toward providing resources to underserved school-age children in our community. Proud started the program after working with her church to provide Thanksgiving meals to homeless families of a South St. Petersburg elementary school. “I learned that outside of academics there are so many things these children look to their school to provide as their school is also their community. Things like supplemental food, hygiene items, uniforms, underwear, and shoes. Often school staff use their own money to help the children. My husband and I began providing some of these materials, as well as Christmas gifts and goal incentives, for a single school a few years ago, but there is so much need, we wanted to do more,” said Melody Proud, founder of Live Love St. Pete.

Brick Street Farms partnered with @byosolar to take their new urban hub model to a whole new level of sustainable farming! They worked closely on a solar design that will not only provide enough energy to power our container farms, but through the design and placement of the panels, rainwater will be collected, filtered, and used to water the plants inside. The unique design allows their grow hubs to function as sustainable, renewable farm plots. Charlie Crist reported that Eckerd College will supplement its ongoing work to reduce ocean pollution resulting from single-use plastics. Awarded as part of the EPA’s Gulf of Mexico Program, a $500,000 grant will provide funding for Eckerd to create a mobile application that will help Pinellas County residents digitally track their single-use plastic consumption with the goal of keeping waste out of the Gulf of Mexico. As a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, Crist was able to secure $20 million for the Gulf of Mexico Geographic Program in Fiscal Year 2021. TampaBayWatch.org

PAGWC Holds Centennial

Garden Tour by Karalee German The year 2022 is bringing many things – a fresh start, hope for better times – but in Pass-A-Grille, it is also bringing a celebration and commemoration that the Pass-a-Grille Woman’s Club has been around for 100 years. In October of 1922 a few women gathered for a “Pound Party,” bringing gifts of necessity for a neighbor who had lost everything in a fire. The good time that day transformed into a club of 20 or so charter members who took as their object “to provide social and cultural interest for members, to promote civic betterment and to foster community welfare.” One hundred years later that is still the operational and inspirational goal of the PAGWC. Over the decades the kinds of cultural events for members and the community groups that have received donations from the PAGWC have been as varied as the backgrounds and interests of the members who chaired the various projects.

After 18 years of successful home tours, which had stopped during re-construction of Pass-A-Grille Way, the first centennial event open to the public is a cultural happening new to this club– “Gardens by the Sea” dock and garden tour on the island of Vina del Mar. Scheduled for Sunday, April 3, 1-5pm rain or shine, the tour will have on view 11 gardens graciously offered at the homes of Anita Adams and Greg Archambault, Stephen Best, Valerie and Vincent Catalano, Wayne Dewey, Eileen Edwards, Gregory Greene, Larry and Alieda Maron, Jim and Barbara Ottinger, Carmen Reller, Dan and Deb Rothenberger, and Chris Stewart. During the garden tour, a party in Vina Del Mar Park will feature pork slider and salad plates for $10, and there will be presentations by the Pinellas Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society, the Garden Club of St Petersburg, Inc., the Florida West Coast Orchid Society, the UofF Master Gardener Volunteer Program, and April Brader, Doctor of Oriental Medicine. Tickets for this event, $15 in advance, are available at www.eventbrite.com/e/269860308447 or at Patchington on the Bayway. Day of the event tickets may be purchased for $20 at the park on Vina Del Mar, across from 291 S Isle Dr., St. Pete Beach.

Membership went from the initial 20 to as high as 303 at the club’s 35th anniversary. In the 1940s one member was PAG resident Elizabeth Watson, wife of Alexander Graham Bell’s assistant ParadiseNewsFL.com | MARCH 2022

St. Pete Beach Station 23 Firefighter Paramedics Provide Lifesaving Assistance to Resident On February 16th the C-shift at Station 23 in St. Pete Beach provided life-saving assistance to a resident who had the wherewithal to seek help at the station. On the drive home after an afternoon of playing pickleball, a St. Pete Beach resident requested a friend turn into the St. Pete Beach Fire Rescue Fire Station 23. This resident was not feeling well and wanted the firefighters to examine vitals. The Rescue 23 crew of Firefighter Paramedic Sam Bathon and his partner, the department’s newest hire, Firefighter Paramedic Anthony Laws ushered the resident into the apparatus bay for evaluation. The resident answered the rapid assessment questions and agreed to an EKG. During electrode placement, the patient became unresponsive and went into cardiac arrest. The EKG showed ventricular fibrillation, a lethal unorganized electrical activity of the heart. Bathon and Laws performed CPR and applied a cardiac defibrillator to shock the heart and reset the electrical activity. With help from Firefighter EMT Patrick Strong, they continued CPR and applied a second defibrillation. The patient then began breathing and opened his eyes. The EKG revealed an inferior infarct (heart attack) and the patient was transported to the Palms of Pasadena Hospital for further treatment.

He is also a Paramedic Preceptor for the Pinellas County Medical Director’s office and recently organized the department’s new paramedic training to assist other mentors. Sam organized and conducted preparatory training for the SPBFR’s Advanced Cardiac Life Support recertification. Anthony Laws is a newly hired Firefighter Paramedic who has been working in Pinellas County for over two years. Patrick Strong is a seasoned Firefighter EMT who has been working for St. Pete Beach Fire Rescue for over 9 years. Patrick is known as a calm and confident professional who enhances the crew with his skills, experience, and equipment knowledge. District Chief Mike Elder stated, “The quick response of Bathon, Laws, and Strong saved one of our residents yesterday. I am proud to have these professionals working for our organization. The SPBFR team assists our community in many ways and this lifesaving outcome is yet another example of how the team’s quick decisions, skills, and training help provide a better quality of life for our residents.”

When you gotta go you gotta go Archaeologists have often found ancient Roman earthenware containers on their digs, but never knew for sure what they were for. Now, thanks to microscopic analysis of a fifth-century ceramic pot discovered in Sicily, we know that the Romans used terracotta vessels as toilets, confirming a long-held theory. Examining a mineral deposit inside the pot, the team spotted the eggs of an intestinal parasite found only in humans, thus proving the pot had once contained human feces and would have served as a chamber pot.

Come up and see Maxime Lalanne’s etchings The Museum of Fine Arts in St. Pete presents . . . Defining Lines: the Prints and Drawings of Maxime Lalanne through July 17. Lalanne’s (18271886) highly refined etchings, with

By Caron Schwartz their subtle use of line and delicate sense of shading, exemplify the scope and depth of a medium that underwent a significant revival in the mid-19th century. Inspired by the highly detailed prints of earlier practitioners such as Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669), artists like Lalanne sought to reassert the medium’s dominance as a fine art over its more mundane uses as a method for reproduction.

“I’ve never had a St. Patrick’s Day off in the last 40 years,” says the Irish-born singer-songwriter. Nolan left Dublin and landed in Montreal in 1979. “I was just young and wanted to get away,” he says. “Regular work wasn’t exactly suited to me.” He started playing music and, although he hadn’t intended to leave his homeland permanently, that changed when he met his wife, Maureen. She was a teacher, so during spring breaks the two often traveled to St. Pete Beach where he performed at the late, lamented Harp & Thistle Pub. In 1993 they decided to make SPB their forever home. Although a prolific performer with eight CDs under his belt, Nolan hasn’t made a recording in several years. “It’s just difficult to sell CDs,” he admits. But he sure is busy, performing at pubs including Molly Malone’s in Tampa, Mary Margaret’s in St. Petersburg, and Flanagan’s in Dunedin. Sadly, he hasn’t had a SPB gig since the Harp & Thistle poured its last pint in 2005. He’s also resuming his “Musical & Historical” tours of Ireland, where most of his family lives. This year’s October tour is already sold out. “I’ll finally get to see my family again after this Covid break,” Nolan is happy to report. So, while you’re quaffing green beer and carrying on, Brendan Nolan will be providing the entertainment, probably at Molly Malone’s. “I’ll be starting around lunchtime and going ‘till I drop.” ParadiseNewsFL.com | MARCH 2022

Meet Jan of Sun Lyon Studios! She is a very talented silversmith who brings her own brand of sunshine to the market! Jan’s inspiration came from her years in St. Croix. As a PADI scuba Instructor she owned a snorkel tour business and collected piles of “sea glass” that she yearned to do something with. A jeweler friend taught her how to melt the glass and work with precious metals that encased her sea glass treasures! Jan returned to the mainland after Katrina struck Louisiana in August 2005 to be part of the rebuilding process in any which way she could. Her life partner Tom built a studio in their home and continued creating. Touring the country doing art shows eventually brought Jan & Tom to Gulfport. They found it to be a community that supported the arts and they just felt at home there. Jan’s grandmother was one of the first female publishers, her parents were writers, teaching her the power of words! Jan wanted her pieces to have inspiration not just through art but through words. So began her new direction! “As life experiences both challenge and inspire my spirit, I continue to focus my designs on life’s ever changing tides. I have melted precious metals with emotions (sometimes, adding a bit of whimsy) to create my line of jewelry. I personally design my pieces beginning with a simple message or image that I want to share. I fabricate my jewelry starting with raw materials, mixed media, gold accents & whatever else seems to make the piece “happen”. Me, myself & I, hammer, saw, file, solder, stamp, bless and polish my own pieces. I love to use rivets or what we call ‘cold connections’ to allow my pieces to have moving parts. I have also invented a few of my designs by carving wax and using the process of lost wax casting.” In 2018 Jan joined the Dunedin Downtown Market, which is also operated by Tampa Markets and decided to give the Sunday Market on Corey Ave a try. It was a perfect fit. She has been with us ever since, bringing her pieces which are “designed and created to be worn as a token of personal energies, inspirations and experiences which have shaped our lives.” Find Sun Lyon Studios across from Swigwam Beach Bar/Twisted Tiki at the market every Sunday! 10am-2pm through May. (June through September 9am-1pm) ParadiseNewsFL.com | MARCH 2022

Clean Up The Ocean

Story by STEVE TRAIMAN Photos from Byrne Ocean Conservation The Byrne Ocean Conservation/Water Warrior Alliance evolved out of a communal desire to improve the dire state of the ocean. It is a collective of several nonprofit groups around the Tampa Bay area that hold marine debris removal and STEAM education a primary focus. Paradise NEWS got this information from Jenna Byrne, director and a founder of Byrne Ocean Conservation. Jenna earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sustainability Management from St. Petersburg College in 2017 and founded Byrne Ocean Conservation in St. Petersburg at the age of 28. Then she formed the Water Warrior’s Alliance, a local, grassroots, donor and volunteer-fueled nonprofit organization.

Some Paradise NEWS readers may recognize Jenna from prior roles managing Rumfish Grill or in sales at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. The Water Warrior Alliance acts as a hub to the partners and provides ways to share with the community the impact all the organizations are making in our fight to save the oceans.

The group’s goal is to make the community aware of the growing marine crisis and ways they, individually, can make a difference and impact.

They work at removing marine debris, hosting an annual St. Pete ocean sweep trash collection tournament with over $10k in prizes, which is the fundraiser for Camp Coral. Camp Coral is a two-week overnight PADI open water scuba camp that assists Mote Marine with the Coral Restoration Project in the Florida Keys. The Water Warrior Alliance empowers our community to advocate for the local environment to ensure a healthy way of life for future generations.

The following are a few of the groups that make up the Water Warrior Alliance and have pledged to participate in the group’s educational and community outreach programs. Each of these esteemed and very active and conscientious groups adds their flavor and expertise to the planned projects, within the Water Warrior Alliance umbrella. Their participation impacts the overall growth of the alliance.

Included are Tampa Bay Estuary Program, LETTS DIVE!!, Sweetwater Kayaks, Freedom Boat Club, Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center, Mote Marine Sarasota, Stream2Sea, Florida Sea Grant, Gator Jims, Gulfport Dive Center, FWC, Save the Manatees, Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council, Keep Pinellas Beautiful, Sans Market, Mermaid Florida, Mad Beach Dive Shop, SCUBI JEWS, Don Cesar, Sea Shepherd, PADI, Mother Kombucha, Project Aware, 4RWorld, Auburn Supply, Ecojoia, City of St. Pete and The Chattaway. The Alliance meets monthly to discuss new and existing projects, centered around the growing issue of plastic filling up the ocean. They target the issue through cleanup methods and events, education and the promotion of plastic alternatives. These groups have created a network on which we can all learn and grow together.

partnership programs offered by organizations from The Water Warrior Alliance.

Improving the state of the ocean through STEAM education is at the core of the alliance’s mission. The group focuses much of their resources on a science-based educational component. The Water Warrior Alliance provides outreach which includes experiments such as: boaccumulation, degradation of plastic over time, microplastic collection via water and sediment, and microplastic analysis as well as Water quality

The group’s goal is to make the community aware of the growing marine crisis and ways they, individually, can make a difference and impact.

As the group grows, more experiments are planned. They center on the dire issues facing Tampa Bay and the West coast of Florida, like the debilitating red tides and how we can counter them. On the invasive plastic front, the alliance is planning on researching micro-plastic combatants and organisms that consume plastic. Their data is shared with the Ocean Conservancy and the EPA. Part of their vision centers around educating the community and future generations. They have crafted several educational opportunities to further that goal. Some examples include: marine science marine debris removal and STEAM-based educational activities and analysis including Camp Coral Scuba Camp, Camp Coral Mini Camps, monthly seminars and local expert presentations, annual St. Pete Ocean Sweep educational presentations, scuba diving to examine the biodiversity of the bay, dip netting, water quality analysis, microplastic sampling and analysis, microplastic degradation, trash art plastic, environmental stewardship workshops, natural tie-dye, beeswax food wraps and other 52

GOALS, TRAINING & EXPANSION

A vital component to the education of the community is training. They offer scuba training provided by community experts during the Camp Coral programs. Through scuba, they expose youth to the local environment, while providing hands-on activities taught by local experts. This program is geared toward the manifestation of dreams, to inspire environmental stewardship and thus motivate individuals to take action and focus on coastal resilience. The Alliance is currently vying for a permanent space at the soon to be renovated St. Pete Science Center. They plan to move their vital monthly meetings to the space, as well as provide multiple educational opportunities. With a space in the Science Center, the Alliance plans to provide more STEAM education opportunities, designed to train and educate our community for jobs in critical environmental areas surrounding climate change, rising ocean temperatures, bioaccumulation, biodiversity, and erosion. The group’s wide and varied community of experts within the marine conservation world are all excited to share their knowledge and skills with generations of future scientists and conservationists.

Jenna Byrne, director and a founder of the Byrne Ocean Conservation

The community has missed the center and all the science-based educational opportunities it offered to youths since it closed, in 2014. Its return could help the Alliance steer this and future generations toward careers in environmental science, mathematics, engineering as well as many other science-based fields of work. Educating the community through marine debris removal is one of the core focuses of the Alliance. Through organized clean-ups, they inspire the growing ranks of volunteers to look for plastic alternatives and share their information with their circles. The following list highlights some of the group’s organized marine debris removal operations: Watergoat cleanups, Beachside cleanups, Vessel Tampa Bay cleanups, PADI Project Aware Dive Against Debris cleanups- SCUBA, Stormwater Scavenger Hunts, and the St. Pete Ocean Sweep- World Ocean Day Celebration. They showcase plastic-free alternatives, from local organizations and businesses, in Pinellas County. Improving the environment and local economy by highlighting products, programs, and services offered by conscientious businesses and organizations. In an attempt to repurpose the marine debris, the Alliance shares it with local artists, who then incorporate it into elements of their artwork. Examples include trash sculptures to disrupt the perception of the critical nature of our marine environment and educate youth and the greater community on ways they can help. As fast as the ocean crisis is changing, the alliance intends for such displays and material to evolve and reflect the current marine state.

WATER WARRIOR ALLIANCE Jenna Byrne invites all to join Byrne Ocean Conservation and the Water Warrior Alliance today, noting that “together we can make a change!” She seeks that challenge on several fronts.“We are focused on environment: impacting more than 600 marine species, 8-million metric tons of plastic are dumped into the oceans each year. Pollution in the world’s oceans is one of the biggest environmental issues of our time; economy: poor water quality stalls economic progress, hinders human potential and reduces food production; and health; pollution doesn’t just impact marine life, it impacts our lives. Help us reduce the toxic pollutants entering our food chain. “Our mission is to improve aquatic wildlife sustainability, while reducing eco-toxicity, rebuilding the benthic layer through ongoing research, and active community conservation and awareness programs.“ Byrne Ocean Conservation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and all gifts made to this cause may be tax deductible to the extent of the law. 82-4736893, in St. Petersburg, Florida. SPIRITED ADVENTURES

By Caron Schwartz

Goddess Ishtar on an Akkadian Empire seal, 2350–2150 BC

Their answer: the gods. Among the immortals, fertility goddess Ishtar was believed to have the ability to coax the earth to provide the sustenance human beings require. Ishtar was also associated with the planet Venus, which represents physical love, making Ishtar the protectress of prostitutes and the patroness of the alehouse. Giving us an excuse to drink, carouse, and maybe get lucky. Activities that occur on all three of these holidays.

No doubt you’ve already made St. Patrick’s Day plans. There are plenty to choose from, ranging from a street party at Caddy’s in Gulfport to dancing at a silent disco at 3 Daughters Brewing in St. Pete. Here’s my take.

These holidays take place in March, during spring when the earth is awakening from its cold winter slumber. People have always marveled at nature’s return to warmth and the miracle of food simply growing out of the ground.

Have you ever considered what Mardi Gras, Purim, and St. Patrick’s Day have in common? All involve revelry, drinking and debauchery, sometimes costumes and pretending you’re someone you’re not.

Why are we so lucky to have food at our feet? We need to know why, and how, and who, something the ancients could not understand.

This year you may have gotten your Mardi Gras beads on March 1, but on the 17th you can drink green beer for St. Patrick’s Day and, as the rabbis recommended for Purim, drink so much you can’t tell the difference between bad-guy Haman and hero Mordechai. As long we’re tying this up in a bow, the woman at the center of the Purim story is Esther, whose name is mighty similar to Ishtar. Even more of a coincidence is the basketball fever that occurs concurrently – March Madness. So go, have fun, and as Jimmy Buffet opines, there might be a woman to blame.

There have been a number of huge improvements in residential air conditioning technology in the last few years. If you, like us, got the most efficient heating and cooling system available, yours is likely a 13 SEER split system, with the compressor outside and the air handler in the attic or a closet. As a replacement, you can get one like that, or, you can consider a ductless minisplit which allows you to control the cooling room by room. If you have a pool pump, you remember how your power bill fell when you switched to a variable speed motor. Makes for big A/C savings too.

LC# CAC1821129

Vinnie Cabano, with three decades of HVAC experience, recently launched www.HappyAirFL.com LLC #CAC1821129 in mid-Pinellas county, where he and Joy Nakanishi recently moved to be with their family.

Their website www.HappyAirFL.com is young, but it is very informative. Vinnie says “If your compressor is leaking freon, you should consider replacing the system. “Costs for tanks of replacement freon have skyrocketed with global shortages on parts too, so if yours is 10 years old, and out of warranty, it is wise to be proactive.” Vinnie apprenticed as a teenager in Dallas. In Las Vegas for the past 25 years, he was working for independent companies and commercial unions. He has extensive experience from residential wine coolers to 125-ton chillers. Caesars Corporation and the Bellagio had him troubleshooting difficult construction issues.

Vinnie will find a solution to your AC/heating needs from a large corporation to a tiny condo. Happy Air has just started in business, but Vinnie is already scoring some fine reviews. “They gave me a really good deal. The quality of work is Amazing! Highly Recommend Happy Air!!!” – David, Clearwater “Wow!! Happy Air was the best experience we had. Rapid response and actually showed up!” – Tim, Palm Harbor “Great customer service. They gave us a quote same day! Vinnie was such a delight. He really knows A/C.” – Brian & Tonya, Clearwater As an independent repair and installation company, Vinnie can sell you Trane, Carrier or Ruud equipment. These days he says, Ruud seems to always have what is needed for installation and repair, so he prefers to recommend them. Call 727-758-3888 or email Joy@HappyAirFL.com.

HANGING AROUND

By Caron Schwartz

me packing. But ever since I learned that fermented foods were good for you, I’ve been holding my nose and adding them to my diet.

Gotcha Kombucha? No doubt coffee is my first love. But lately I’ve been cheating on my darling Joe. A funny thing happened on the way to a Schwartz girls’ weekend at Marco Island. As we approached Fort Myers my sisters declared they were starving, so they launched Google and hit upon a place that looked better than average. We pulled off I-75 and waltzed into Artisan Eatery where we had an amazing lunch. The other two washed it down with the family favorite, coffee of course, but a can of Flying Eagle Kombucha in the cooler caught my eye. I’ll be honest. Whenever a vendor was offering a sample of kombucha in a natural foods store, one sniff was enough to send

Flying Eagle Kombucha: love at first sip. Dry, fizzy, and delightfully tart. A few weeks later Boyfriend and I spent an afternoon in Fort Myers where we indulged in a kombucha flight at the Flying Eagle brewery. And I discovered Flying Eagle available at The Blend (Old Northeast) Coffee & Wine. That’s when I decided to branch out on my own. Without going into details, I will say my homemade pomegranate “booch” exceeded expectations. The second batch, flavored with blackberries, isn’t quite as effervescent but yummy nonetheless. The third has weeks to go before bottling. I’ve also discovered new favorites closer to home. Beech Kombucha not only has a stand at many local outdoor markets and festivals, it has a brewery and tasting room in the Warehouse District. Another local, St. Pete’s Mother Kombucha, doesn’t have a tasting room, but bottles of this liquid gold are available just about everywhere. And at Localtopia last month, I enjoyed CBDB’s CBD-infused libation. Talk about mixing trendy treats that are good for you. Yum!

SAFER PEST CONTROL

By Peter Roos supplement, that prevents or eliminates worms. It is a drying agent, which, at a microscopic level, has sharp edges. The dryness and edges prove deadly to creatures like ants and fleas, and as such makes a safe, inexpensive form of pest control and prevention. You can get what is likely a year’s supply including an applicator delivered to your door for less than $20 from Amazon and others. It is available from Home Depot and Lowes as well and other websites including one that specializes in a myriad of products based around DE.

If you are being bugged by ants or fleas, and who in Florida isn’t, there are a number of safer, poison-free alternatives. Have you ever heard, for example, of Diatomaceous Earth (DE)? It’s a long name for a finely ground powder, much of which is mined so pure that it is considered food grade, safe for people and animals to eat. It is an ingredient in a myriad of products that we use daily. The powder is made of the naturally occurring fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of algae that forms in freshwater. These remains are ground up into a soft, fine white

powder that carry many different uses. It’s chemical free and completely safe to use around children and pets. It is even fed to livestock, and in zoos, and animal rescues, as a beneficial food

We always keep some around the house. Once or twice a year we dust the outline of our home with a light coating about six inches wide. If fleas are detected, we dust the pets’ sleeping areas with some more. If I have gotten you curious by now, Google it and let us know how you like this suggestion.

PET HEALTH

Why does my veterinarian constantly ask me to bring Fido’s poop sample in? What makes it so important? We veterinarians place importance in fecal samples both for the health of your pet and your and your family’s health. We aren’t just talking about looking for worms here either. Intestinal parasites range from worm-like creatures to single celled organisms called protozoa. Roundworms and hookworms are the most common worms that we will find in a sample and are more prevalent in puppies and adult pets that are not on preventions, these parasites are zoonotic (able to spread from animal to humans) and can cause significant diseases.

Roundworms can cause visceral larval migrans in people where the larval stage of the parasite can migrate through and cause damage to organs such as the liver and the eyes. Hookworms can cause cutaneous larval migrans in people where the larva migrate under the skin. Our pets can harbor these parasites without showing any symptoms but they can also cause vomiting, diarrhea and possibly even anemias. Other worm-like parasites that can be detected in a fecal sample are lungworms (yes, they do cause issues with the lungs) and flukes. Protozoa are microscopic parasites that may also be zoonotic to people. These usually will cause diarrhea and possibly vomiting in your pets. They will encyst and cause irritation to the intestinal tract and can cause chronic infection. Giardia and coccidia are two of the most common protozoal parasites that we see. This only scratches the surface of parasites that can infect your pet and what a fecal exam can detect. “But I don’t see worms in Fido’s poop so we shouldn’t have to check a fecal sample.” This is a common misconception. Most of the time the adult worms are not shed in the stool but the eggs. The eggs are microscopic, as are protozoa and

By Dr. Johnathan Pierce even some adult worms cannot be seen with the naked eye. Veterinarians and veterinary technicians don’t like playing with poop but it is key to maintaining your and your pets safety. It is important to have your pet’s fecal sample checked at least once a year whether you own a cat or a dog and also whether it lives indoors only or in and out. Wildlife and other pets can spread parasites in the outdoor environment which is why it is important to pick up after your pet. Some of these parasites can survive in the environment for months to years. We can bring parasites into our houses on ourselves or even when we bring potted plants and other things inside. Most heartworm preventions will have intestinal parasite prevention for some of the more common parasites, however they do not cover all the parasites. It may be a stinky subject, but is very important. Keep your pets up to date on their preventions and get their poop checked. Give your veterinarian some crap today! “Get Sirius About Your Future”

MARCH ASTROLOGY On March 2nd the New Moon begins the lunar cycle in introspective, intuitive Pisces. With aspects to several planets this new energy is urging us to look within for direction on goals and plans. We have the opportunities to move forward this month and accomplish much. Venus (values) and Mars (action) are traveling together and will cross over Pluto (beginnings and endings) on the 3rd. We will have several days of intense developments as old energy is released that has been stagnant for several months so new cycles can begin. Both Venus and Mars visit progressive, inventive Aquarius on the 6th. Mercury and Saturn are in Aquarius as well, so ideas and directions planned now have discipline and structure while also being unique. We are well past Mercury’s shadow phase with clear sailing for a couple of months in decision making and communications. On the 9th Mercury moves on to Pisces; its energy becomes intuitive, reflective, and romantic. Watch out for idealism and impracticality. The shadow phase of Venus has also ended so the clarity with relationships, finances, and values is enjoyed again and celebrated going forward. The Full Crow Moon in Virgo on the 18th is the last winter lunation and brings an end to the season. Aspects reveal areas that need practical attention and application with an influence for easy transformation. Changes in health, habits, and work or duties are likely. Spring begins on the Vernal Equinox as the Sun enters dynamic Aries on the 20th. The energy is high when seasons begin and this is a time of high self-confidence, enthusiasm, and independence. Just one week later on the 60

ENCOURAGING WORDS

By Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones

The Mirror That Never Lies Sometimes our best teachers are not the ones we feel like bringing apples to . . . Sometimes I amaze myself with how much more I have to learn about practicing what I have been “teaching and preaching” for more than thirty-seven years. Occasionally I come across an individual with whom I have an instantaneous negative reaction– something arises within me that wants to get away from that person’s energy immediately. This happened at a restaurant recently when I was seated at a table directly next to a person who was talking incessantly in an exceedingly loud, invasive, grating, penetrating voice that dominated the entire room. I am aware that this disturbed me because my soul is on a perpetual quest for peace and stillness, even when I am dining out. Now here’s the sticky part for me: according to “spirit-mind-body” authorities such as Deepak Chopra, the people in my life are serving as a mirrors that never lie, including that person in the restaurant. Really? What part of me could possibly be that way?

OMG! After some serious self-inquiry, it became clear that at times, the exceedingly loud, grating, penetrating voice that incessantly dominates the conversation while never taking a breath is the internal voice in my head, especially when I am trying to feed myself spiritually by meditating or reading a complex passage in a book. The takeaway for me is to pay more attention to that voice and learn better how to make peace with it rather than react to it with irritation, unsuccessfully trying to push it away or avoid what it is saying. When I do listen and gently acknowledge it, it quiets down all on its own. Go figure – what you resist, persists. Have you noticed that when you look in the mirror and your hair is messed up you don’t try to brush the mirror; wisdom guides you to brush your own hair? The moral of the story is, when I am willing to catch myself red-handed in the judgment of others, realizing that ultimately the person who I am really judging is myself, the awareness I need most comes flooding in. The lesson is, the more a person offends

me, the deeper the trigger point lies within myself. If it were not so, that person’s presence would have no effect upon me whatsoever. What a great opportunity every person offers me – to heal some aspect of my own being when I am open, aware, and teachable. Well, now that I have told on myself, how about you; who do you project your less than desirable traits on? As an example, maybe your teacher is the person standing on the corner with a sign asking for money, which offers you an opportunity to get in touch with how you feel about sharing your good with others, or a perhaps a fear about lack in your own life you don’t want to face. The lessons will vary because our teachers are legion; every human being is our potential teacher if we are willing to receive the lesson they bring to us. If we are open and paying attention, the right teacher always seems to appear at the right moment. In those moments of ego projection, if we are willing to take a deep breath and peek into our mind we may be stunned by the findings. Remaining open to being taught by someone who by our judgment is offensive or somehow not behaving in a manner we think he should is not always easy, but it is possible. When we have the courage to stay the course of conscious self-inquiry with a willingness to learn the lesson at hand, the barriers usually melt away, our judgment dissolves, and we receive that understanding about ourselves which our teacher offers. Give thanks for your master teachers each day. You will discover any projection usually centers on a need to love yourself and others more and judge yourself and others less. As a mindfulness practice today, become the observer of your thoughts and judgments about others. Don’t allow any thought, positive or negative, about another to slip by unnoticed. When that person offers you a rare glimpse into yourself, smile and silently say, “Thank you.” Take the lesson and see how it applies in your life. Remember, you are also a reflection in their eyes. May they realize that the gentle and loving Spirit they see in you is but a reflection of their own divine nature. The mirror never lies.
