Born in 1978 in Sri Lanka, Pramith Geekiyanage completed his university degree at the University of Visual and Performing Arts in 2008 and has participated in numerous group shows in Sri Lanka. In his early work he focused entirely on figurative drawings on canvas of the male torso. The muscular lines of the naked back often in brown and grey hues became the artist’s signature for a couple of years until he completely abolished his figurative work and began painting abstract linear works on canvas.
Similarly to the inkblots used in the Rorschach psychological tests these paintings invoke emotional responses. Inkblots have been used as tests of both creativity and emotion by researchers since the 19th century. The use of these abstract designs goes back to the time of Leonardo Da Vinci in the process of defining character and personality. Coincidentally Geekiyanage relates his work strongly to the role it has played in transforming his own surroundings and the world in which he lives. He relates his artistic practice to his search for inner peace; his abstract works are therefore without meaning and put forward to the viewer as an ambiguous statement.
