Livestock NEWS Erysipelas PRODUCT FOCUS Bimectin Pour On for Cattle (Ivermectin) For the treatment of gastro-intestinal worms, Lungworms, Warbles, Mange Mites, Sucking and biting lice. Dose - 1ml per 10kg (300kg - 30ml = ÂŁ0.33) Pack sizes 2.5 & 5 litre Cattle Meat Withdrawal 31 days

Erysipelas is a common bacterium that can affect pigs and lambs. It can be soil borne and occurs more frequently in muddy conditions. In pigs it can cause sudden deaths but is more likely to cause a high fever, depression and often results in raised diamond shaped patches on the skin. Animals that are chronically affected may have heart lesions and/or arthritis leading to ill thrift. Treatment is relatively straightforward with penicillin generally being effective but prevention is better and there is a licensed vaccine that can be given to piglets from 6 weeks old. Although it is not available in individual doses it is relatively inexpensive and most people find it economic to use for small number of pigs compared with the weight loss that can result from infection.

This occurs particularly when dip with no preservative becomes heavily contaminated and lambs are then exposed to adverse weather conditions. Occasionally it may occur after castration or docking if cleanliness is not maintained. Severe lameness occurs some days after infection and the lambs often loose hair over the affected legs. Recovery can occur but residual lameness will reduce weight gain and marketability, as animals may not be fit to go through a market.

Sheep can also be affected and they normally get the infection through wounds and abrasions, commonly at

Again penicillins are the drugs of choice for treatment but, unlike pigs, there is currently no licensed vaccine in the UK.

the time of dipping (it is known as post-dipping lameness).

LIVESTOCK NEWS

PRODUCT FOCUS

Locatim Locatim is a concentrated dose of immunoglobulins that can be given alongside the calf's first feed of colostrum. It contains antibodies to E.coli K99 and comes from cows vaccinated for rotavirus and coronavirus. The donor cows are also screened free from diseases such as Johnes, TB, Brucella, EBL and IBR. It comes in 60ml bottles and is particularly useful to give if colostrum quality is an issue.

Are you choosing the right flukicide? Not all treatments are effective against the same range of life cycle stages!

For further information please discuss this product with any of the farm animal vets.

Unless acute disease is suspected or diagnosed in cattle, a flukicde that acts against late immature and adult fluke stages should be selected, such as Clorsulon, Nitroxynil or Closantel. If possible there maybe a benefit in delaying the housing treatment until 5-8 weeks after housing to ensure all larval stages of fluke have matured to adulthood then repeat treatment at least 7 weeks after first treatment.

Triclabendazole is particularly useful for treating the early immature and immature stages of liver fluke but there have been increasing levels of suspected resistance to triclabendazole in some areas of the country particularly in sheep. Because it is the same fluke that can infect cattle and sheep, it is possible that if cattle and sheep are grazing the same pastures cattle can become infected with resisitant fluke from the pasture.

For example - why not try it for your replacement heifer calves to give extra peace of mind that they have received maximum antibody transfer? Other instances include - weak calves after a caesarian or bad calving or calves born from heifers, which generally have poorer colostrum quality.
