Introduction The 1st Traditional Boat Show is organized by the Hellenic Professional Yacht Owners Association, the Traditional Boat Association of Greece, the Mayor of Troizinia and the Port Authorities of Troizinia. It is under the aegis of the Greek National Tourism Organization. Almost all of the vessels in this boat show are built in Greek shipyards. There are few exceptions which are included because of their special quality and history.

from THE MAYOR OF TROIZINIA - METHANA

I

t is with pleasure and pride that we host the 1st Greek Traditional Boat Show and we welcome you to the city of Methana.

It is our firm belief that Methana “The City of Health with its unique climate, vibrant lifestyle and positive energy will create the suitable environment for establishing long lasting relationships. The response has been astounding. The citizens of Methana have welcomed the event and are looking forward to the challenge with eagerness and enthusiasm.

Furthermore, the event has aroused the interest of many visitors from the capital, the Argosaronikos islands and the Peloponnese alike. It is a great opportunity for entertainment, relaxation, alternative activities as well as collaboration of any kind. We will make sure that all visitors have the chance to visit the archaeological sites, the volcano, the thermal spas and the beauties of the area, as it is an interesting place of particular natural beauty and of great variations in nature. Our only concern is that we all enjoy ourselves so that this event is established for the future. We are looking forward to welcoming you.

With best regards The Mayor of Troizinia - Methana Ioannis Sampanis

from THE PRESIDENT OF THE GREEK NATIONAL TOURISM ORGANISATION

H

onorable Presidents and Members of the Boards of the Hellenic Professional Yacht Owners Association and Hellenic Association of Traditional Boats,

Distinguished participants, It is with great pleasure that I greet the proceedings of the 1st Traditional Greek Boat Show on behalf of the Greek National Tourism Organisation. This show aims at giving prominence to the high level of Greek shipbuilding craftsmanship, as it has evolved through the ages and as it still stands nowadays. Greek shipbuilding has always been both a form of art, as well as a tradition deeply rooted in our way of life, our civilisation, our nature as nautical people and the historical continuity of our globally recognised seamanship. What makes our traditional boats so special is that they incorporate our passion for sea, travelling, creativity and unrestricted freedom. And any single creation presented in this show is truly unique as each of them is a labour of love of its builder and they all express an individual skill and inspiration; a getaway spirit through creativity. Furthermore, the show is an excellent opportunity for all the participants to visit the ancient and picturesque spa-town of Methana, lying on the beautiful shores of the Saronic Gulf. Methana, a place of an undiscovered from mass tourism natural beauty, have also their own shipbuilding tradition and is indeed a unique setting for exploring the wonderful art of traditional Greek boat-building. I am confident that the Methana Traditional Boat Show will be established as one of the most prestigious relevant events in the Mediterranean Sea and it will pave the way for further promoting this heritage. In conclusion of this short greeting address, I take the opportunity to thank the Hellenic Professional Yacht Owners Association and Traditional Boat Association of Greece, for their brave initiative to organise this important event for the first time. I hope you all have a good time in beautiful Methana and I wish you all a fruitful experience with regard to our common aspiration towards the progress of boat-building craft. Thank you for your participation. Dr. C. Pallis President of the Greek National Tourism Organization

from THE PRESIDENT OF THE HELLENIC PROFESSIONAL YACHT OWNERS ASSOCIATION

I

t is with great joy that I announce the first Traditional boat show to take place in Methana on May 24-26. Greece with more than 3000 islands and 18000 kilometers of coastline has the oldest maritime tradition and shipbuilding history worldwide. Greek boatbuilding includes different types of vessels based on the study of the special local weather and sea conditions. Selection of such boats which are part of the Greek maritime culture and which are still being built in the traditional way will be shown in Methana . There you will be able to enjoy them and celebrate with us this inaugural event. I look forward to welcoming you in Methana, home of King Theseus, whose father gave his name to the Aegean Sea.

With best regards The President of Hellenic Professional Yacht Owners Association Antonis Stelliatos

from THE PRESIDENT OF Traditional Boat Association of Greece

D

ear Friends of tradition and of the sea, As president of the Traditional Boat association of Greece and on behalf of all its members I salute the First Traditional Boat Show in Methana.

After fourteen years of struggle to make traditional boats known to the wider public, a fine selection of them will be finally exhibited to delight both the eye and the heart of the visitors to this boat show. This event will bring back to life the boat builders of the past, the history of the “wooden walls” of Greece, the boatyards, and the love for the preservation and maintenance of these unique vessels none of which is like the other. For the first time a boat show will be honored by the presence of wooden traditional fishing boats. These beauties, if they could be saved from the subsidized destruction, they could be ambassadors of the Greek flag throughout the Greek Archipelago. We ask the full support of the visitors to the First Traditional Boat Show so that this criminal destruction of our marine national treasures stops. 10,000 victims so far is a giant figure! In contrast to other European countries which subsidize the preservation and continuation of their maritime tradition, Greece subsidizes the annihilation of this tradition. All the ministers of culture for the last fourteen years did nothing to stop this. They absolutely cared neither for history, nor for tradition. Their crocodile tears for the destruction of so many boats will not move anyone. I hope that the First Traditional Boat Show will be established as an annual event in the town of Methana so that the forthcoming generation will get to know and admire the traditional wooden hulls like the Trehandiri, the Karavoskaro, the Perama, the Liberty… and their rigs like the sakoleva, the gaff rig etc. My warmest congratulations to the Hellenic Professional Yacht Owners Association, the prefecture of Troizinia and the ministry of Tourism for making this very old and dear dream of ours come true With best regards Rear Admiral The President of Traditional Boat Association of Greece Nikolaos Emmanouil Kavallieros
