Overview: This Studio will focus on the implications of urbanization on design. We will study issues pertaining to ‘hyper-density’ and the conditions it creates in our cities and our built environment. This semester we will look at ‘cross-programming’ as one such condition of our crowded Indian cities. Through an informed understanding of the t heory of ‘cross-programming’, the students will apply this knowledge to their design process. To experiment with this theory, we will investigate notions of Play and Work. We will explore, through analysis and design interventions, the spatial and programmatic possibilities where the realms of Play and Work intersect, interface and overlay.
7
Learning Outcome: 1. Identify and list projects/situations in order to describe the problem/issue 2. Make diagrams in order to express spatial relationships 3. Extract information from the diagrams to translate that into spatial planning 4. Create surreal collages to evaluate the idea/ position/design strategy 5. Draw constructed representations to express the final design
8
What are the implications of urbanization on interior design? In this studio we addressed an aspect of this question related to ‘hyper-intensity’ of activity in Indian Cities. Premabhai Hall, a Brutalist architectural masterpiece designed by BV Doshi in the 1960’s, is currently an abandoned urban void at the heart of the Walled City, an area famous for the ‘hyper intense’ activity of markets, commerce, homes, celebration, traffic and the press of people in the small densely built streets. How would the city of Ahmedabad inhabit this forgotten cultural treasure, in order to resurrect it from the dead? Could this building be reanimated and re-inhabited for the people of Ahmedabad by ‘cross-programming’ activities of play and work?
The Studio explored new creative design possibilities arising from the intermixing of play and work. These included visual, spatial and ergonomic innovations, new types of functional adjacencies, and the surprise of unexpected junctions, disjunctions, overlaps and functional superimpositions. These possibilities were researched through a series of rigorous, time-limited, problem solving exercises and through debate, drawing, modeling and making.
The 20th century polymath Albert Einstein is quoted as saying “Play is the highest form of research.” Students of the Play Work Studio discovered how the serious work of creative design was stimulated by active playfulness.

... Bhadra is a large plaza and Sangath has a series of platforms, open spaces and walls. CEPT has thick exposed brick walls and thin concrete fins with north light. I feel they are conveying something very important – connection with the ground. Most of my projects relate to natural forces and community, creating dialogues. Bhadra is pedestrianized and generates an urban dialogue. Sangath, with the steps, creates a dialogue with the garden. Each is a dialogue between nature, community and building. The buildings are rooted. Even though Premabhai Hall is like an animal, it stands powerfully. There are large public spaces, smaller spaces, family spaces and community spaces. “The question was can we really build something new alongside these monuments, and if so, what should be the nature of our design ..? - Doshi, 1979.

Vishalla is designed to potray a typical Indian village. It was initially designed in the out-skirts of Ahmedabad, where people can relax and escape from the hustle-bustle of the city life. The natural connect with th eplants and the muddy lanes itself delivers the mind from all day to day concerns. It is infused with the spirit of a typical Indian village with mud houses, thached roof, open alleys and other prevailing village elements. The pronounced village- like environment is experienced in every nook and corner of vishalla. en Vishalla is designed in a manner in which two nodal points are connected through a a pathway. All the spaces designed are semienclosed and unfold themselves gradually as diner walks further. The axis of pathway keeps changing and so does the orientation of diner.

MUKTI DHAM CREMATORIUM Case study - Work
Antim dham near PVR acropolis mall is a crematory in which dead bodies are burnt. Through the shaft the ue gases are vented to the atmosphere. It was made by architect gurdeep singh. Everyday around 6-7 bodies come there for cremation. Major functions of the crematorium include prayer area and crematory where the bodies are burnt.

Conclusion Since the building is highly symmetrical it has staircase on either side of hall which are connected by a passage on the upper hall and are also connected by the foyer space and hence creating a circulation loop .Each level of auditorium has door on either sides leading to this circulation loop.

33
CIRCULATION-
Observation: Three types of circulations are there in the building. The circulation happens in a loop. Analysis: The different types of circulation help in Anal circulation of different people one acts like a fire exit the other for office people and the third one which is the main entrance is for auditorium users. It helps in free movement of the people inside the building.
LIGHTINGS

N
Observation: The northern façade receives ample of natural light. Analysis: The foyer area is an integral part of the hall which receives plenty of natural light because of the shutters, and the openings in the roof. It is the most important area for circulation of people. Observation: The eastern and western facades have punctures. Anal Analysis: The punctures allow sunlight to enter in while also avoiding harsh sunlight to enter in. Observation: The auditorium has no natural lighting. Analysis: Because the lighting inside is to be artificially controlled there is not opening in the hall.

Observation: There are small openings in the western and eastern façade. Analysis: They avoid direct sunlight and they provide in giving cross ventilation. Observation: There are HVAC systems in the auditorium and no openings. Analysis: To control the light and air inside the auditorium there are no Anal openings. The auditorium needs to be artiďŹ cially ventilated with the help of air conditioners.
FURNITURE OBJECTS-
Rexine Analysis: As a material rexine is easy to clean and hence is also easy to maintain for a long time.
Wood: Wood is a very durable materials hence is used in doors and windows.
