REDEFINING PLAY PROJECT:
Thesis(On going)
LOCATION: Nehru Nagar,Vile Parle TYPE:
Mixed-use Architecture
MENTOR:
Mr. Jagdish Jani
01
WHAT IS PLAY? Work consist of whatever a body is obliged to do.... and play consist of whatever a body is not obliged to do. -Mark Twain 1. Play is a voluntary activity. 2. Fundamental motive of play is to experince its affords rather than fulfill a particular task. 3. Play is free. 4. Play is contextual. 5. Play is creative and personal. PLAY FOR ALL AGE GROUPS! PLAYSCAPE= OBJECT + SUBJECT + ENVIRONMENT
Theory Of Affordances An affordance is what an environment offers, what it provides or furnishes for the people or animals who live there. Affordances are therefore subjective and objective at the same time. Eg- A tread of a step can be used by a child to sit on but the same tread will be used by and adult to climb.

MASS HOUSING PROJECT:
Cluster housing
LOCATION: BKC,Bandra TYPE:
Mixed-use Architecture
MENTOR:
Mrs. Dipal Chaya
02 BRIEF: The aim is to design housing for people residing in BKC,Bandra. The idea was to develop a hybrid situation of housing and transport. Since BKC is a commercial area, the type of people that reside there are mainly entrepreneurs and working class people. Hence the unit sizes have been kept minimal with multi functional uses. The site is surrounded by commercial buildings on the front and mangroves,Mithi river on the back. Bleeding the mangrove greens into the site along with the upcoming metro, the programmes proposed are a bus depot with a mix use building that compliments the commercial nature of the site. The design involves a cluster of G+10 buildings descending in height as one moves towards the mangroves. The greens penetrate through the structures giving the variation in the form of the cluster.

TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT PROJECT:
TOD
LOCATION: Bandra Station TYPE:
Mixed-use Architecture
MENTOR:
Mr. Alan Abrahim
03 BRIEF: Transit-oriented development (TOD) is a type of urban development that maximizes the amount of residential, business and leisure space within walking distance of public transport. It promotes a symbiotic relationship between dense, compact urban form and public transport use In doing so, TOD aims to increase public transport ridership by reducing the use of private cars and by promoting sustainable urban growth. The aim is to create spaces that increase the use of public transport and at the same time have their own individualistic identity. The site is opposite Bandra station. It is surrounded by autos, buses, trains, taxi stands and also an upcoming metro station which make it the most ideal site for TOD. The design contains these different connections that act like public spaces for different activities to take place. The structures designed are of mixed use nature that compliment people of all types.

CONCEPT
SITE ANALYSIS
Movement in public spaces Transit Oriented Development is a neighbourhood which is compact, walkable, pedestrian-oriented and where mixed use communities are centered around a public tansport. This is fused with the addition of public spaces which alter the movement of the people in terms of rhythm and pace. The site is next to Bandra Station where the vehicular and pedestrian movement densify the area. The lack of public spaces creates a choatic movement around the site which also is one of the reasons for people not entering into the site. The transient public prefers another route rather than entering into our site because of the congestion, compaction and lack of basic civic amenities on the streets in relation to the footfall of the people. The main aim is to divide the vehicular traffic and the pedestrian traffic between the two major hubs i.e. Bandra Station and upcoming Metro Station. I want to crerate a pedestrian friendly route which also acts as a social gathering space that opens upto various mixed use programs. The hierarchy of street and the network to be proposed will be influeneced by the context of the site.

AYURVEDIC CENTER AND SPA PROJECT:
Wellness center
LOCATION: Lunuganga,Sri lanka TYPE:
Healthcare Architecture
MENTOR:
Mrs. Ajana Chhaya
04 BRIEF: Lunuganga Estate was the country home of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. The Italian inspired garden with spectacular views over lakes and tropical jungle together with a simply designed plantation house. A garden is not a static object, it is a moving spectacle, a series of scenographic images that change with the season, the point of view, the time of day, the mood. So Lunuganga has been conceived as a series of separate contained spaces, to be moved through at leisure or to be occupied at certain times of the day. This is not a garden of colorful flowers, neat borders and gurgling fountains: it is a civilized wilderness, an assemblage of tropical plants of different scale and texture, a composition of green on green, an ever changing play of light and shade, a succession of hidden surprises and sudden vistas, a landscape of memories and ideas. Getting inspired from Bawa and his idea of breaking the barriers between inside and outside we decided to design an ayurvedic center and spa that would compliment the site. TEAM MEMBER: Vanshika Pacheriwala.

Q.What is tropical modernism? A design movement in which sensitivity for local context combines with the form-making principles of modernism. Bawa’s architecture led to the formation of a new architectural identity and aesthetic for many tropical environments.

BRIEF:The street vendors and hawkers are a primary and integral part of the city which have been overlooked in the past and present. There is a strong need to dignify this sector of the people who contribute significantly to the economy and city’s culture and identity. E-commerce has heavily impacted the way people shop and the whole aspect of physical markets and their interface with digital media. At the same time, the informal markets is one such domain which continues to exist and adapt to changes. It behaves like an organism which constantly adapts to survive. The aim is to design a market which adapts to the future digital media and moulds itself around it rather than it being a separate medium of commerce. The relationship of a digital market with the people is a key factor to be considered while designing. TEAM MEMBERS: Shruti Patel, Juhi Mody, Kirat Kohli, Aditya Samant.

COMPETITION THE MASTER STUDIO 2020 -BY ARCHMELLO
08 BRIEF: The aim is to design a facility wherein architecture students and professionals can work and learn along each other. The challeneg is to design a co-working commercial space for freelancing Architects, studios for established firms and Learning center for architecture students. Due to the lack of knowledge in academics, the students are not aware of the actual design problems and situations in the real world. Keeping this in mind, we have designed a multipurpose, co-working space where students and professionals work and learn through each others experiences. For us, learning is not only subjected to formal education but also takes place in informal spaces. These informal spaces are our everyday spaces where all the wisdom and knowledge is shared. The idea was to design a shared space where this exchange could take place. We began with studying the site context and formed a zoning plan based on the the sun orientation and the functions. Since our concept was based on informal spaces, we first started defining these informal spaces like corridors, vertical links, terraces, workshops etc. and used them as links to connect different functions in our structure. Based on the brief, we planned a G+6 structure and designed more than half the site as open public space. The groundfloor is extremely public with all the informal and pop up activities. It starts getting private as we go further up with the links being the informal source of learning. The faรงade is a tessellated skin that comprises of sustainable features like green plants and terraces and solar panels. TEAM MEMBERS: Kirat Kohli Shruti Patel.

MENTOR:
Mr. Atrey Chhaya, Ms. Disha Saighal, Mr. Mahek Lalan.
09
BRIEF: Biomimicry is the imitation of the models, systems, and elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex human problems; biomimicry in architecture and manufacturing is the practice of designing buildings and products that simulate or co-opt processes that occur in nature. This installation is inspired by the symbiotic exchange between the Hawaiian bobtail squid and the Vibrio Fischeri bacteria. The squid attracts the bacteria to its light organ located at the bottom of its 3cm body. Appendages around the organ catch the bacteria and transport them into the pores of the organ with the cilia present on it. These are hair-like motile cells that move simultaneously, creating a wave movement which transports the bacteria forward. The installation is a segment of this organ lined with cilia. TEAM MEMBERS: Dhun Mehta, Urmi Nandu, Shiva Paliwal, Jeeya Savani.
