Ride the Byron Solar Train

It’s been over three years since the Byron Solar Train launched, winning international acclaim and a cabinet full of awards. And still, the charming 1969 era two carriage train remains the only full sized fully solar powered train in the world. A remarkable achievement for Byron Bay. Only a quarter of the energy created by the solar panels on the train and train shed is used to operate it, with the remainder fed into the grid. The Byron Solar Train operates a ten-minute one way or twenty-five minute return service between North Beach Station (toward the end of Bayshore Drive between North Byron Hotel and Elements of Byron) and Byron Beach Station in town, where Shirley Street meets Lawson Street. The coastal track traverses littoral rainforest, endangered coastal wetlands and the breathtaking Belongil Creek, part of Cape Byron Marine Park. There are ten return services daily between 10:30am and 6:00pm. Adults ride for $5.00 one way with children 6 – 13 years $3.00 and children under six years free. Or go all the way with the $30 Ride in Style offer which includes a return adult train journey, lunch at North Byron Hotel and a schooner of Stone & Wood or glass of wine. www.byronsolartrain.com.au

“The Byron Solar Train looks like yesteryear and rides like the future” says Nick Lake, the Solar Engineer behind the train from local firm Nickel Energy. “Being net carbon positive it is proof that we can achieve sutainable, emission free transport. The excess energy generated by the solar system is sent into the grid and powers the local community. It is a beautiful example of how we can power our lives with sunshine and not fossil fuels”.
