Editor’s Welcome
Welcome to Byron Bay, great place to fall in love with and the hardest place to leave with so many action-packed activities and discoveries to make!
“Kavanbah” is the Bundjalung traditional name for Byron Bay meaning ‘meeting place’!
Byron Shire, which includes many smaller townships is the jewel in the crown of the Northern Rivers region, and is the economic driver of the Byron Visitor Economy. Our many Villages have their own special qualities to offer visitors.
Byron’s economic landscape is changing with the arrival of new entrepreneurs that are lifting the quality of our tourism businesses with new food and wine bars, nightclubs, and restaurants. Many fashion designers offering very high-quality local brand names are now available in our retail shops! Many new business opportunities exist in Byron Bay.
Byron Bay is bouncing back economically in 2024, with many retailers having had the best retail sales for many years especially over the 2023 Xmas holidays, reports of visitor numbers close to pre-covid days with most accommodation properties booked out. With the expectations of having a wonderful Byron holiday, to be able to enjoy, “just being on the beach” the visuals are spectacular, our beaches are the envy of the rest of the world, clean, beautiful soft sand, that screeches under foot, when laying on your towel you softly nestle into your own body impression, one can only relax!
The surf has been spectacular with many days of over a metre high surfing wave, consistently rolling on shore, some days two metres, or even greater. With crystal-clear surf, our Byron beaches offer some of the best surf breaks in Australia. Byron offers many beaches to choose from and quiet calmer waters can usually be found when desired.
When surfing, be courteous to other surfers and obey surf etiquette! You never know who is in the water, surfing next to you, it could be a top Corporate Executive, a politician, a mega super star, or the girl next door. Black Dog Surfing will teach you to surf, if you need help getting started.
Discover Byron’s hidden gems with many walking tracks to explore our
diverse eco landscape. See the walking tracks on the Byron Bay map page 64. I recommend an early morning beach walk, then tackle the steps up to the Pass Lookout to check out the surfers, see some local dolphins or spot the whales.
Before dawn, set out to experience the sunrise at the famous Cape Byron Lighthouse lookout. The first sun that hits the Australian Mainland every morning is right here in Byron! You may sight the magnificent whales as they pass by so very close to this most eastern spot of Australia between April to October.
A walk along any Byron beach is so relaxing, especially late afternoon as the sun goes down, to clear your thoughts, rejuvenate, unwind, or set new goals – it is so invigorating to listen as the waves roll in and break on the shore! Take some ME time!
Our Byron day time activities include, scuba diving or snorkeling out at Julian Rocks with abundant marine life to check out. Cape Byron Marine Park has many protected fish to see! Enjoy a fun day with Cape Byron Kayaks, floating out over the Marine Park reefs, you are sure to see our local resident pod of dolphins having fun. Have you tried skydiving? Take the exhilarating experience of an early morning balloon ride and when you come down, share a glass of champagne over breakfast. Have some time on the beach to deepen that golden bronze tan, however when in the sun wear a hat and sunscreen! Cool down with a huge selection of Ice Cream treats, and natural fruit juices available close to the beach, or lunch at the iconic Beach Hotel. Go shopping and pick up a memento of your wonderful stay in Byron. For evening activities Byron CBD is easily accessed on foot. With just a short stroll to your first port of call - a cold beer, martini, or a glass of your favorite wine, then dinner at one of Byron’s many famous Restaurants with multi award winning Chefs, offering fine dining and great customer service. There is a huge variety to choose from. Byron also features many food delights from different countries and cultures from around the world. See the Restaurant Guide on page 34. Byron has many late-night venues to dance the night away, including the Beach Hotel which has great music, good vibes, a new inspirational meal menu and a large covered outdoor area.

Ride the Byron Solar Train
It has been over 7 years since the Byron Solar Train launched, winning international acclaim and with a cabinet full of awards. And still, the charming 1969 era two carriage train remains the only full sized fully solar powered train, in the world! A remarkable achievement for Byron Bay. Only a quarter of the energy created by the solar panels on the train and train shed is used to operate it, with the remainder fed into the grid.
The Byron Solar Train operates a ten-minute one way or twenty-five-minute return service between North Beach Station (toward the end of Bayshore Drive between North Byron Hotel and Elements of Byron Resort) and Byron Beach Station in town, where Shirley Street meets Lawson Street. The coastal track travers’s littoral rainforest, endangered coastal wetlands and the breathtaking Belongil Creek, part of Cape Byron Marine Park. There are ten return services daily between 10:30am and 6:00pm. Adults ride for $5.00 one way with children 6 – 13 years $3.00 and children under six years free. Or go all the way with the $30 Ride in Style offer which includes a return adult train journey, lunch at North Byron Hotel and a schooner of Stone & Wood or glass of wine, included in this package. www.byronsolartrain.com.au
“The Byron Solar Train looks like yesteryear and rides like the future” says Nick Lake, the Solar Engineer behind the train from local firm Nickel Energy.
“Being net carbon positive it is proof that we can achieve sutainable, emission free transport. The excess energy generated by the solar system is sent into the grid and powers the local community. It is a beautiful example of how we can power our lives with sunshine and not fossil fuels”. The

The local Bundjalung Aboriginal people’s name for the area is Cavanbah, meaning ‘meeting place’. Captain James Cook named Cape Byron after his Royal Navy officer John Byron, circumnavigator of the world and grandfather of the poet Lord Byron, many Streets in Byron are named after famous poets.
According to the 2019 census of Population, there were 10,246 people living in Byron Bay.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people made up 1.6% of the population. 64.0% of people were born in Australia. The next most common countries of birth were England 4.9% and New Zealand 2.5%. 76.3% of people spoke only English at home.
Longboard surfers arrived in the 1960s and discovered natural breaks at The Pass, Wategos, and Cosy Corner. This was the beginning of Byron Bay as a travellers’ destination, and by 1973, when the Aquarius Festival was held in the nearby town of Nimbin, its reputation as a hippy, happy, alternative town was established, although tourism facilities remained minimal. From the 1980s, tourism began to develop in earnest, with the cash-poor surfers and hippies supplemented, and to a degree supplanted, by cashed-up conspicuous consumers. This in turn stimulated the development of retail precincts and accommodation, whilst
many still enjoyed a surfer’s layback lifestyle with all yearround outstanding surfing conditions.
Today, Byron Bay is one of the most high valued residential areas on the Australian East coast with the growth in multimillion-dollar mansions now pushing the median value of house sales up beyond AU$2.0 M in 2023, over a 100% increase since 2013, based on 2023 data from realestate. com.au and more recently since Covid 19 lockdowns, many people can work from home and live where they like, increasing values even more with 30% growth in property values in just 3 months in 2020, and now the land values have literally exploded in 2024.
As at 2019, the town is cited as having around 10,122 permanent residents, while being visited by over 2.5 M visitors each year spending almost $800 M in Byron Shire.
At the same time, the town has not lost its attraction to a diverse range of visitors including surfers, backpackers and visitors interested in the natural eco attractions of the area. It also supports a healthy cross section of creative artists, craftspeople and musicians, while its more recent hippy/new age past is reflected to a degree in a prevalence of alternative “new-age” shops, “spiritual” services such as meditation and yoga classes, and holistic healing/’wellness’ retreats.

BEACHES
01 Belongil to The Wreck
This iconic beach starts at the western side of the Main Beach car park and heads west away from the Lighthouse. Another great wave was formed when ‘The Wollongbar’ was washed from the old Byron Bay jetty during the 1920s, building up the sandbank. ‘The Wollongbar’ was back then used as the major transport for all the tourists coming from Sydney to visit Byron Bay. You can still see the ‘rudder’ and ‘the boilers’ sticking out of the sand. Here both Left and Right break on sandbanks that are always there because of The Wreck.
From here, all the way along Belongil Beach gets its good share of waves. It is great for both the experienced surfer and the beginner. The waves vary from fast hollow dumping waves, to soft spilling waves, dependent on what the swell and sandbanks are doing. It will pick up most swells from the north to the south and likes a west to south west wind but also a south east is surfable. The sweep is here if the swell is here.
02
BEACHES
02 Main Beach to Clarkes
The main beach runs from the end of The Pass back down to the carpark at the Byron Bay Surf Life Saving Club. This is Byron Bay’s main patrolled beach by Surf lifesavers. The waves here are often fast and hollow, but can often get small spilling waves, depending on how big the swell is. There are both Left and Rights here, as long as the sandbanks are in good shape. There are often rocks along here that come and go with the sand flow. It likes the wind to be from the south east to south west, and will pick up most swells. The sweep often comes with the swell, so you have to look for an exit point before you get to the rocky car park, otherwise you will get back to the beach in front of The Wreck, past the rocks.
03 The Pass
The most famous wave in the Bay, where you have all extremes in one wave, from the point, which is hollow and fast breaking all the way past the rocks, and you must be experienced. Once past the rocks, it will break towards Clarks Beach, where the waves are more spilling and more suited for beginners, great viewing from the Pass lookout.
04 Watego’s Beach
Wategos Beach is the most easterly beach in the Bay. It is very popular with long boarders and is a great family beach. The waves are mostly spilling and will break all the way to The Pass. All swells will get there, except a strong south swell. There is often a sweep (side-shore current) along this beach that will carry you towards the rocks and ‘The Pass’. You must always watch for an exit point to avoid being carried past the end of the sand, otherwise you must keep surfing to ‘The Pass’.
05 Tallow Beach
Tallow Beach is the long open beach on the southern side of the Byron lighthouse. It is an open beach that will pick up all swells. It should only be surfed by experienced surfers, unless it is very, very small. The waves are fast and hollow, but can sometimes be spilling waves. It likes all winds from the North East, North West to the South West.
The waves will break, no matter how small the surf is … Left and Rights. The south swell should be avoided, as this will push you onto and around the rocks. There are always rips and currents along this beach.
LEARN TO SURF
Having a go at surfing is at the top of the must do list when visiting Byron Bay.
Do not just jump onto any surf school bus for your lessons, make sure your bus stops in town for surfing at the famous Clarkes beach or Belongil beach that have made Byron Bay “the place” for the best lessons. CAPE BYRON
LIGHTHOUSE
Meander through rainforest, world class beaches to the lighthouse.
Peter WottonMeander through rainforest and world class beaches to the lighthouse.
The light that shines by night over Cape Byron Marine Park emanates from a tower as famous as the town of Byron Bay itself. Built at the turn of the 19th century to protect ships passing along the coast, Cape Byron Lighthouse stands resolute on the most easterly point of the Australian mainland. Operated by resident keepers until 1989, it is now automated light is clearly visible from ships as far away as 10 km and the Byron Bay Township.
Take a guided tour of the lighthouse, learn more about this iconic white tower and find out about shipwrecks and stories from the sea in the Maritime Museum which is below the lighthouse and the artwork inside is ‘a must see’. You will enjoy some of the best views of the ocean and hinterland including regular sightings of turtles, dolphins, and whales. It is the most easterly point of Australia, and one of the best places to see humpback whales as they pass on their annual migration North between May and November.
Please note:
• Remember to take your binoculars if you want to whale watch
• It can be a busy place on the weekend, so parking might be limited
• Parking fees apply
WALKING TRACK
Enjoy spectacular coastal views along the Cape Byron walking track that takes you on a hike through rainforest, clifftop viewing of secluded beaches, grasslands to the lighthouse.
STATE CONSERVATION AREA
• It is a good idea to put sunscreen on before you set out with a hat, and plenty of drinking water. Keep on track, keep away from cliff edges.
• Take your swimwear as there is some good places to have a swim, on the way up to the lighthouse.
You’ll need a good two hours to properly experience the walking track – but it’s so rich in delights, don’t be surprised if you reach the end and feel like doing it again. Unwind and enjoy the view as you walk. The 3.7km loop leads you on a hike through rainforest and across clifftops with stunning views of the ocean and hinterland. En route you’ll wander through the shade of Bangalow palms and ancient burrawangs, across kangaroo grasslands, along picturesque beaches and up to Cape Byron Lighthouse.
ACCOMMODATION
The four Clarke’s Beach Cottages have direct access to Byron Bay’s main beach and are surrounded by National Park. Staying here is just magnificent, you can wake to ocean views and the sound of crashing surf. Alternatively, the two lighthouse cottages where the former keepers used to live have been fully refurbished, heritage listed cottages (circa 1901) makes this a truly unique holiday experience. Be the first to see the sunrise on Australia’s mainland and enjoy watching dolphins, turtles and whales. To enquire about NPWS holiday accommodation in the lighthouse keeper’s cottages or the beach cottages go to: www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/ bookings.
WATCH THE WHALES
As Byron Bay is the most easterly point of Australia, it is here that whales pass by extremely close to the mainland on their journey to the warm, shallow waters of Queensland to give birth to their young and some species are accompanied by the males to mate. Humpback whales are the stars of the annual whale migration and are one of the most common whales you will see. The male humpback whale is famous for its extraordinarily long and complex songs which can travel a very long way throughout the oceans.
Get up close to some of the most awe-inspiring marine life on earth and go kayaking with dolphins and turtles on a guided sea kayak tour. Prepare to be amazed, as the whales may pass gracefully nearby.
It is important to stay 100 meters from the side of their path and 300 meters if a calf is present. However, it is amazing how curious they are and like to come closer to investigate. What an amazing feeling it is to make eye contact with such a wonderful creature.
Best spots for viewing: Byron Lighthouse / Ballina Lighthouse Hill, Angels Beach, Flat Rock, Skennars Head / Lennox: Rocky Point, Pat Morton Lookout. From March till October.
Keith Christie PhotographyCAPE BYRON MARINE PARK

Mullumbimby is an Australian town in Byron Shire in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. It promotes itself as “The Biggest Little Town in Australia”. The town lies at the foot of Mount Chincogan in the Brunswick Valley about 9 kilometres (5.5 miles) by road from the coast. At the 2023 census, Mullumbimby and the surrounding area had a population of 9,483 people. Locals refer to the town as “Mullum”.
The name “Mullumbimby”, meaning “small round hill”, was given to the district by Aboriginal people. The name is derived from the Bundjalung-Yugambeh dialect mulubinba (possibly also pertaining to a native fern which grew in the vicinity).

BALLINA
Ballina is located about a 30-minute drive south of Byron Bay. The Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is located here and regular jet services are provided to Sydney and Melbourne. The Ballina area was first home to the wider Bundjalung Nation and was a meeting place for the Bundjalung people. The Bundjalung people in the area were treated to a smorgasbord of seafood and bush tucker. The remnants of elaborate fish traps still exist on North Creek. These traps consisted of rock walls surrounding small pools, fish would become trapped as the tide began to ebb. The beaches of Ballina are magnificent surfing beaches. Lighthouse Beach and Shelley Beach are easily accessed. Entry to South Ballina beach is accessed via the car ferry and offers outstanding surfing and beach fishing. Ballina’s etymology is not entirely certain. One view holds that it is a corruption of a clan name for the Bullina band of the Arakwal. It has been argued that in this tribe’s Bundjalung language, bullinah meant “place of many oysters”. This theory argues that the Aboriginal name reminded the predominantly Irish settlers of “Ballina”, so the name’s origin could be an accident.

BALLINA’S BIG PRAWN
Ballina is home to the world’s largest prawn (made of concrete and fibreglass). On 24 September 2009, Ballina Shire Council voted to allow the demolition of the Big Prawn, but this permission was never acted upon. Bunnings Warehouse purchased the site and refurbished the Prawn as part of the redevelopment. The Prawn now sits on a stand next to the entrance of the Bunnings warehouse car park. Ballina’s Big Prawn is another of Australia’s iconic big things. Built in 1989, the Big Prawn has undergone a makeover and was reopened in July 2013. It now has a tail!
